[Frizzle] Whoo-hoo!

Phew!

Thank goodness! I was afraid of what I might find.

Something could've changed over the summer.

Nope, nothing different, except Jyoti, of course.

Arnold's not big on change.

Everything's exactly like it was when we left last year.

Welcome to your first day. I'll show you around.

Exciting.

But from what you guys said,

I thought everything would be more magical.

Oh, don't worry. It will be. First, the normal stuff.

Like how everybody sits in the same place every class.

And how we all have jobs. It's a delicate balance.

Wanda and DA handle the brain builders, and Ralphie annoys the skeleton.

[rattling]

Yeah, but he never gets rattled.

[chuckles]

I handle the worrying for all of us.

Cool! It's like you have your own balanced ecosystem.

According to my research, you're right. An ecosystem is--

A community of plants and animals with roles to play.

-How'd you know that? -An old pizza box I left under my bed.

My mom called it the world's smelliest biome.

-Ugh. -[giggling]

Where do I fit in?

I bet we'll find out before the day's over.

You can have Phoebe's seat. She went back to her old school.

[bus honking]

-There she is. -Get ready, everybody.

That's awesome.

that plant does not belong in the special spot.

Where are we anyway?

[device beeping]

According to my research, we're in the Galapagos Islands.

Fi-o-na! How you doin', gal?

[laughs] Galapagos Gil! What's up, bear-man?

-[both laugh] -They know each other?

the only place you find Galapagos Gil is the Galapagos Islands.

I'm rarer than a screen door on a submarine.

Look at this way healthy, way special ecosystem.

You know, Ms. Frizzle, whenever we used to go on a trip,

Professor Frizzle used to, how do I put this, enhance the experience.

-Ah, with sandwiches? -With magic!

You know, as my great-aunt Clair Voyant used to say,

"I knew you were going to say that."

She smelled like onions in the worst possible way.

[beeps]

-Uh... whoa! -Whoa!

The kid in me says, "Eww." The finch in me says, "Nom-nom-nom!"

[laughing]

Unexpected. Everything here is interconnected.

Ding-ding-ding! Nailed it, new kid.

[both] When!

-Aw. -[Frizzle] Let's go!

Galapagos Gil, with everything in unison,

don't you worry about something throwing that off?

You bet your giant tortoise we do. That's why we inspect everything.

You mean like luggage, coats, hats? Everything?

[Gil] Everything. So no new plants or animals get here.

-Accidents happen, you know. -Accidents?

So you have to look at everything really close up?

-[gasps] Tim, what a great idea! -Oh, no!

[beeps]

Ooh! I love getting microscopic.

Magical! Majorly, majorly magical.

Sure, till we get eaten or baked into a pie.

Let's explore, class.

-Whoa! -Cool.

[laughing]

Wow!

Hey, guys. How about we suit up to boot up?

[beeps]

Yeah, that's good.

[grunts]

I'm rock climbing on a boot.

Okay, look closely, everyone.

Anything could be an invasive species

that throws off the island's delicate balance.

An invasive species is a plant or animal the island's not ready for?

Yes to the guess from DA.

If things that already live here have no defense,

the new species can take over and change everything.

"And change everything..."

-Wow! This is absolutely-- -The reason they invented sneaker spray.

Ugh! This guy's a walking cautionary tale.

He's been hiking in the woods back in his home country.

Let's hope there were no invasive hitchhikers.

[thuds, screams]

We have insects.

[screams]

Those look like insect eggs.

By Jyoti, you're right.

These eggs could mean the unwelcome arrival

of a whole family of gypsy moths.

You don't want that. Here's what they can do.

Here's before.

And here's after!

That poor ecosystem.

It was totally defenseless against the invasive species.

All that could happen because he didn't clean his--

Wow! Have you seen a dirtier boot? It's a banner ad for yuck!

[groans]

[chuckling]

Sorry.

What else is in those boots, sir?

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I think so, but who would invest in a rocket-powered tortoise?

No! I mean, that the new Ms. Frizzle keeps talking about invasive species

because she is one.

Relax. She's got a sense of humor. I can work with that.

Don't you get it? It's part of her plot.

Our classroom is a perfectly balanced ecosystem like these islands.

We need to protect it.

What are you doing?

Oh, just protecting our ecosystem from an invasive teacher, that's all.

Starting with her plant.

Hey! Actually, looks good on you. Sets off your shell.

All aboard, class.

-Bus, undo your stuff. -[beeps]

[kids laughing]

Ms. Friz, I mean, Professor Frizzle?

Hi, Arnold. Meet my new research assistant, Goldie.

What is it?

Looks like a golden tamarin monkey. [chuckles]

[chuckles]

-I mean, what else is it? -I'm not sure how to say this, but...

You need to come back!

What's the problem?

Your sister is nice and everything, but she's new.

Yes?

And new things are always trouble.

It's like on the Galapagos.

Something new could totally upset their whole ecosystem.

True. Sometimes a new species can be a problem, but not always.

-[bee buzzing] -Honeybees were new to North America.

But they became part of a new balance. No disasters at all, just yummy honey.

So ecosystems always create a new balance over time,

but it's not always bad.

Sometimes it works out wonderfully, like with the honeybee.

But with invasive species, it's not so good.

I wish I knew how it will work out for our class.

Maybe a little magic will help you figure that out.

-Magic? -Runs in our family, you know.

Thanks, Ms. Frizzle. I mean, Professor Frizzle.

Hey, Arnold, one of my students hasn't adapted to the new teacher.

I'm supposed to ask about magic.

But I don't see how that will help me see how things will work out.

Let's go see.

Are you saying we should go ahead in time?

Like my time-traveling auntie Meridiem will say one day,

"No better time to visit the future than the present!"

To the bus!

Wow!

Cool. Salivating.

-Just look at all that yummy tech. -[beeping]

I wanna go to this school 30 years in the future.

If I don't bring my grades up,

I will be at this school 30 years in the future.

Look! It's Arnold Jr., Wanda Jr., Ralphie Jr., everybody junior.

See, Arnold? The class's ecosystem has survived.

Nothing to worry about.

You're right. What a relief! I guess I was totally overreacting.

Guys, wanna see my project on the huge Galapagos crisis?

Crisis in the Galapagos? What's she talking about?

Maybe we'd better find out.

[dings]

[dings]

-No, no, this can't be happening. -Arnold, are you okay?

That plant is growing everywhere.

[groans] I can barely see where we're going.

[bus honks]

These poor islands.

-At least it couldn't get any worse. -Oh, no, it is worse.

[Arnold screaming] No!

This is not good.

Bunnies. Adorable! Best thing ever.

-This is a "hare-raising" situation. -[chuckles]

Galapagos Gil? Is that really you?

The second. You must be the Frizzle class.

My dad told me you might show up

And indeed we did.

So, what precipitated the profusion of this particularly perfidious plant?

No one knows, but somehow it wound up on the islands

and threw off our ecosystem.

What's with all the bunnies?

Well, once the plant started taking over, they wanted to control the plants.

So they brought in bunnies to eat them.

But there was nothing to control the bunnies.

Exactly! So now we have two invasive species instead of one.

That plant is obviously a non-native invasive species, but what is it?

[gasps] I know exactly what it is.

That's the magical, crazy-growing, must-stay-in-a-pot-at-all-times

Crescit Leiunium Frizzlaeia vine!

Like the one on your desk 30 years ago?

Exactly! Only how did it get here?

Did I accidentally cause this?

That would have been a terrible thing to do.

-Um, I'm sure it's not that bad. -But it is, Arnold.

This is a really big mistake. I'm supposed to lead by example.

[sobbing] And if it was my fault, I don't know what I'll do.

Um, it is an example. Of plants, growing like crazy.

And taking over the islands.

Well, maybe I am an invasive species.

Maybe I shouldn't be here. Should I ask my sister to come back?

[stammers] I mean, you shouldn't take it so hard.

But still getting old Friz back? That would be amazing, huh?

[kids] Arnold, no!

No!

That settles it. I'm calling Valerie right now.

[phone dialing]

[line ringing]

[Professor] Wahoo!

-Val, did I catch you at a bad time? -No. What's up?

Listen, I've really messed up. You see, what happened was--

Wait!

Um, can I talk to the professor, privately?

You got it!

[screaming]

Hi, Arnold, what's on your mind?

[screams]

Ah, right.

That plant? It was my fault. I did it. I left it on the island.

Goodness. Why in the sky would you do that?

With that plant in place of your mug, it was too much.

[sighs] I know I'm the guy who hates change,

but I caused the biggest change ever.

In the form of plants and bunnies. Can you help us fix this?

Well, remember I said a little magic will help?

[gasp] Yes! That's it! Magic bunny-disappearing spray!

Uh, no.

Wait. The best way to stop an invasive species

is not let it invade in the first place.

Exactly! Good thinking, Arnold. Ooh, maybe you'd better get back now.

[screaming]

Whoa! [groans]

Arnold. Hey!

Ms. Frizzle, you didn't leave the plant here. I did.

-[kids] What? -But I know how to fix it.

If we take it away before it causes trouble.

-To the bus, Arnold? -To the bus!

[panting]

I left it right over here.

Tortoise, wait up!

Uh-oh!

No!

[grunting]

-Hang on, Arnold! -[Carlos] We're coming to help you.

[grunting]

[Ralphie] Hang on, Arnold!

[grunts]

[Jyoti] It's okay, Arnold, we're coming!

[Ralphie] Whoa!

[Carlos and Tim] Whoa!

Oh, now that was a mistake.

-[thuds] -[grunts]

-[yelps] -[kids] Gotcha!

Plant going crazy!

[humming]

Best class ever.

-Thanks, Ms. Frizzle. -Thank you, Arnold.

Because of you, the carefully balanced ecosystem here will stay balanced.

You know what, Mr. Perlstein? You're all right.

-You know what, Ms. Frizzle? So are you. -[chuckling]

[sighs] Good ol' familiar desk.

Good ol' familiar pencil case. Good ol' familiar orthopedic cushion.

And a new teacher. That is good new, like a honeybee.

Hmm. Now what should go where?

There you go. The place of honor.

[gasps] Perfect! Thank you, Arnold. And what's this?

Something I made. It's a pot with a motion sensor perimeter.

That way, if this little guy gets roamy again, we'll know.

The new kid just found her spot in the class ecosystem.

[engine revving]

I like it. New year, new teacher, new balance.

You're going to have great new adventures, class.

I have one thing left to say to you.

-What could that be? -Wahoo!

Whoo-hoo!

[kids giggle]

Well, Goldie, our adventure begins.

Although I'm going to miss those kids, including--

-[phone ringing] -Arnold?

Hi, Professor Frizzle. Before you go, I had another question.

I know, "Why didn't you just stay home from school today?"

Besides that.

Nature doesn't have fences to keep animals in their own ecosystems.

So, what's stopping one from invading all on its own?

Wild animals do roam free inside boundaries

like oceans and mountains. But they like to stay

in places that have what they need to survive.

Could be a small range, like one tiny island.

Or might be all the oceans in the world.

Okay, so invasive species make a mess.

How do you fix it after the fact?

It's hard to undo damage done.

What we can do is stop invasive species in the first place.

Never set pets free in the wild.

And when you travel, be careful not to bring stowaways.

[Keesha] Arnold! Time for your audition.

Right! Just let me practice my line.

[clears throat]

-Oink, oink. -Audition? Oink?

What are you up to now?

Just a little surprise for next time. Where will you be, Professor Frizzle?

Wherever the wind takes me, Arnold.

Wherever the wind takes me!
