(Episode 8)

We are cultivators who hunt demons.

May I know if this is Xu Ying's house?

My name is Sun Ya.

My husband, Xu Ying, and I

were childhood sweethearts,

and we have been married for more than 10 years.

He had always had a fondness for wine. I could never make him stop.

He didn't return that night.

I assumed he had simply drunk himself unconscious somewhere.

But unexpectedly, someone found his corpse outside the city at dawn.

Could it be Hong Lian?

Where did he usually go to drink?

Lanyue Pavilion.

Is that a tavern?

Lanyue Pavilion is the largest brothel in Songhe County.

Since you're demon-hunting cultivators,

please catch the demon that tore out my husband's heart and avenge him.

Miss Sun, our condolences.

If there is truly a demon harming people, we will surely eliminate it.

Honey, did you hear that? Honey?

- Come here. - Sir.

Your dishes are ready.

Have a drink with me.

- Don't go. - Stop it!

- Don't hide from me. - That hurts.

Stay with me.

Didn't they say there's a demon?

Why is the street so deserted in broad daylight,

but so crowded at night in Lanyue Pavilion?

Because something here draws people in,

so much that they'd throw caution to the wind just to come.

Nice!

Do you think Xu Ying was killed by Hong Lian?

Why would she rip out his heart?

Do you know about Hong Lian's background?

No.

She's a lotus growing by Naihe Bridge.

She had absorbed the resentment of countless wandering souls.

When she took form, she was steeped in evil energy.

Every full moon, that evil energy surges through her,

bringing excruciating pain.

Only by consuming human hearts can she suppress it.

Is there no way to remove the evil energy?

There is, but there isn't.

What do you mean?

Nice!

Is it her?

What are we waiting for?

That's only a puppet, a clone. Capturing it won't help.

Sit down.

A clone? Then where is her true body?

She's been suppressed for centuries.

When she broke free, she was gravely wounded.

If she's controlling this puppet, she must be somewhere nearby.

You can't track her real body?

She has lived for nearly 1,000 years.

Of course she has ways to conceal herself.

So Grandmaster isn't as impressive as I thought.

Marvelous!

- It's so beautiful. - What a dance.

Miss Lian, this white nephrite jade is an heirloom.

See if it pleases you.

Miss Lian, I spent a fortune on this luminous pearl.

This is agarwood. It's worth 1,000 gold.

I don't want your jewels.

What I want is your love.

I've never been here before.

Is she really that enchanting?

I really like you, Miss Lian.

Hong Lian is a master of seduction and enchantment.

Grandmaster, did you ever fall prey to her charms?

Miss Lian...

Don't listen to their nonsense.

Don't believe him.

They are just a bunch of lecherous fools.

Miss Lian.

Look at mine.

Look at mine, take a look.

Look at me, Miss Lian.

Get lost!

You think I don't know who you are?

What are you even offering? How can it compare to mine?

Gentlemen, you two look unfamiliar.

We've long heard of your charms and came just to see for ourselves.

Such a handsome

young man.

Out of all the faces here tonight...

Miss Lian.

Yours is the only one I find pleasing.

Would you be willing

to come upstairs and share a drink with me?

What about the gift I prepared?

I know, right?

I shall accept your kind invitation.

Wait for me here.

- No. - You're leaving, Miss Lian?

Miss Lian.

Miss Lian, take a look at us.

- Miss Lian. - Miss Lian.

Miss Lian, you're clearly adored by all.

Even the furnishings in this room are worth a fortune.

Things like these can't be taken with you when you die.

They have no value compared to true affection.

Come, have a drink.

Miss Lian, it seems you're rather curious about the human heart.

Not fond of it.

But true affection is so rare in this world,

it becomes all the more precious.

Miss Lian, are you here to find true affection?

I'm waiting for someone.

Who?

Someone who doesn't love me.

If you meet him,

could you ask him to come see me?

What did she tell you?

She said she's waiting for someone.

Grandmaster, do you know who she's waiting for?

I know.

Then let's bring him here.

Maybe he can help us catch Hong Lian.

He doesn't want to meet her. How can we force him against his will?

Then what should we do?

Just wait around for Hong Lian to strike first?

What if she slips away?

I've already cast a barrier around all of Songhe County.

She can't escape.

What do we do next?

Wait.

Wait?

She won't show herself, and we can't find her true form.

Let's see who gets restless first.

But then again, I'm very curious.

What exactly did Hong Lian do to get sealed away in the Prison Burial?

Hong Lian, you spread a plague and killed countless lives.

Surrender yourself.

Tell him to come see me.

Still so defiant.

More of your memories again?

You still haven't told me.

Who is the man Hong Lian keeps speaking of?

Li Mo.

One of the Three Kings under your command?

Good memory.

If so, since this began with him, it should end with him too.

(Silly girl, he doesn't love you.)

Who is it?

(You know very well that he doesn't love you.)

It's not like we've never met.

Why do you look so surprised?

Don't bother looking around.

This is an illusion I created.

Without my permission, no one gets in, and no one gets out.

Why did you bring me here?

Why don't you guess?

You want to force Li Mo to come out.

You're so smart.

Have a seat.

I heard Li Mo has been avoiding you for centuries.

Are you sure he'll come?

It depends on how important you are to Bai Jiu Si.

Will he be willing to catch his disciple just to see me because of you?

And if he's not, well then,

I'd be helping you see him for who he really is.

He will come.

You still don't understand men, do you?

He may say he loves you,

but it doesn't always mean he does.

I've lived for 1,000 years.

I've seen enough of the world's hypocrisy and cold hearts.

Not all men are like that.

Do you know what this is?

Evil energy.

It seems that Bai Jiu Si told you about this.

It's because of this evil energy.

They torment me every full moon, making me feel worse than death.

Old Lady Meng on Naihe Bridge told me that

only the blood the heart of someone who truly loves me

can cleanse the evil energy.

Unfortunately, I've been waiting for 1,000 years,

and this evil energy still clings to me.

Guess why?

Maybe if I let you see it with your own eyes,

you'll understand.

We grew up together, and now we're of age to marry.

I've already spoken to my parents.

If you don't mind, tomorrow...

I'll come to your house tomorrow to formally propose.

Okay.

Lian, does this mean you've agreed?

Wonderful!

Lian is going to marry me!

Lian is going to marry me!

This is wonderful!

What are you trying to show me?

What is this now?

(Of course it's more of my past.)

Who is knocking on the door?

Wake up.

Miss Hong Lian, thank you for saving my life.

Once I pass the imperial exam, I'll come back to marry you.

I'll wait for you.

Lian.

Lian, I've come to marry you.

Enough!

Have you seen it clearly?

Whether it was childhood sweethearts, a life-saving debt,

facing life and death together, or some soulmate connection,

they were all lies.

They claimed to love me deeply,

yet in the end, not a single one of them could rid me of this evil energy.

Isn't it ridiculous?

You killed them.

I didn't kill them.

I just took blood from their hearts.

If you believe all men are fickle, why are you so fixated on finding Li Mo?

He's different.

What makes him different?

He doesn't love me.

He's the only one who doesn't love me.

Why are you so determined to find him?

I love him, but can't have him.

I at least deserve an explanation, don't I?

All right, someone is here for me.

I won't play with you anymore.

Let me test Bai Jiu Si's true feelings for you. What do you think?

What are you going to do? Let me out!

Don't leave! Come back!

Let me out!

This is just a puppet. You can't hurt me.

If you want to kill me, go ahead.

Where is she?

You can trade Li Mo for her.

If you want to see him, you'll have to come in person.

Do you take me for a fool?

If I were facing you with my real body,

what leverage would I have to bargain with you?

How about this?

I heard disciples of Canglei Hall are bound by a blood curse.

Issue a decree to Li Mo,

and I'll tell you where Li Qing Yue is.

How about it?

Her location.

Li Qing Yue is in there.

But a word of advice, it's easy to enter, not so easy to get out.

Yes, I laid the trap.

Do you still dare to enter?

This is getting more and more interesting.

Grandmaster!

Grandmaster, I'm real!

- Grandmaster! - Grandmaster!

(Only one of them is real.)

(Bai Jiu Si, you have only one chance.)

They're all fakes.

(If you choose the wrong one, this girl will be sealed in the ice forever.)

(Not even Xuan Heaven Envoys will be able to save her.)

Grandmaster!

Grandmaster, I'm the real one.

I'm the real one, don't listen to their nonsense.

- I'm the real one. - Grandmaster.

I am Qing Yue, Grandmaster.

Grandmaster, I'm the real one.

- Grandmaster! - Grandmaster!

They're all fakes!

Grandmaster, I am the real one!

Grandmaster, I am the real one!

- Grandmaster! - Grandmaster, look at me!

- Grandmaster! - Grandmaster!

(Bai Jiu Si, are you sure you don't want to take another look?)

Grandmaster, how did you know it was me?

I

would never mistake

my wife.

Grandmaster, I know you're the best.

(It's really touching and affectionate.)

(In that case, I won't disturb you two lovebirds any longer.)

You can't leave! You have to let us out!

(Once I've seen Li Mo, I'll let you go.)

What if he never shows up? Are you going to keep us here forever?

Say something!

Grandmaster, do you have a way out of here?

No.

What should we do?

Wait.

Grandmaster, have I become a burden to you again?

It's alright.

Light one's life. Burn.

Light one's life. Burn.

Thank you, Grandmaster.

How do you know that melody?

You're a disciple of Jingyun Sect.

How is Chu?

I mean no harm.

I came in secret only because I need your help.

Chu said you'd understand after reading this letter.

You want to go to the Nine Heavens?

Yes.

Come with me.

Yinlian Mountain is sacred ground to my sect.

It's said to have existed since the beginning of chaos,

connected to both Heaven and the Underworld.

Our founding sect master achieved enlightenment here

and ascended to the Nine Heavens.

This is the relic of Yinlian Sect, Heaven-reaching Staircase.

Regardless of one's talent or cultivation level,

as long as one climbs the Heaven-reaching Staircase,

they can bypass the painful process of forming a core

and ascend straight to the Nine Heavens.

What's the price?

If something this powerful had no cost,

the Nine Heavens would've been overcrowded long ago.

As expected of the Jingyun Sect's brightest talent. You're sharp.

This Heaven-reaching Staircase is a treasure that defies the natural order.

It draws from the energy of the heavens, the waters of the earth,

and connects realms beyond the six paths of reincarnation.

You're from the celestial tribe

while this Heaven-reaching Staircase is a relic of my sect.

If you seek what others cannot attain,

you must endure the pain others cannot bear.

You're to be tempered by gales, scorched by flames,

your bones shattered and tendons torn.

Can you withstand it?

The destruction of the soul and the breaking of the heart.

It's a torment worse than death.

Are you scared?

You've got some guts.

But why should I just let you go so easily?

What do you want?

I want you to rescue Chu.

You know him best.

If he wanted to leave, he would've done so by now.

All of you from the Jingyun Sect are so rigid and inflexible.

I'll help you today,

but you have to deliver my letters to Chu in the future.

So long as the Jingyun Sect isn't harmed, I'll agree.

That's for sure. After all, it is Chu's sect.

Okay, I agree.

This is the Heart-Devouring Pill.

Take it, and I'll trust you.

From now on, you'll need the antidote from me every month.

Otherwise, the poison will rot your organs from within.

Will you step aside now?

I'm curious.

Who is this person that you're willing to go through all this for?

Grandmaster, did you bring food?

What do you think?

I really should start cultivating fasting techniques soon.

If we keep waiting like this, I'm afraid I'll die of hunger first.

Grandmaster, talk to me to take my mind off the hunger.

What do you want to talk about?

What really happened between Immortal Li Mo and Hong Lian?

What made her obsessed with him for centuries?

I don't know.

Are you Immortal Li Mo's master?

How could you not know?

Li Mo only became my disciple after I sealed Hong Lian away.

He never brought it up, and I never asked.

I thought we might find a clue from their past that could help us escape.

Grandmaster, look.

Before you came, Hong Lian showed me several visions of her past.

She did it by crushing this.

Do you think these are all her memories?

Hong Lian's obsession is Immortal Li Mo.

If we find out what happened to them in the past,

can we then find a way out of here?

It's worth a try.

Wait.

What's this?

Binding Charm.

No matter where you go next, I'll be able to sense your presence.

Alright, I'm starting.

Liar.

You are all liars.

Stop.

Were you behind the recent string of violent attacks?

So what if I was?

You're a demon.

Since you've taken human form, you should devote yourself to cultivating.

Why resort to forbidden dark arts and harm others?

What business is it of yours?

I'm just offering advice.

What you're doing goes against the natural order.

It will only bring about retribution.

Have you ever felt the torment of evil energy from vengeful spirits

wreaking havoc in your body?

Have you experienced your flesh and every nerve beneath your skin

being torn apart and healed over and over again?

What do you mean?

When I transformed, I was already cursed with evil energy.

Tell me.

When has the natural order

ever been fair to me?

Hong Lian does sound a little pitiful.

All I ever wanted was someone to love me,

to protect me.

But in the end,

it was all a lie.

If that's the case, let me help you.

These are indeed Hong Lian's memories.

Grandmaster, shall we continue?

Continue.

These are all traps set by mortals.

There are so many injured animals.

Can you save them all?

I'll save as many as I can.

It's really hard getting used to how day and night change here.

Grandmaster, don't you feel dizzy?

You came at just the right time.

I just roasted this rabbit.

Smells great. Do you want some?

Grandmaster, I want...

It's all an illusion.

None of this is real.

What's wrong?

Are you upset?

There's a strong flow of spiritual energy here.

Cultivating in this place has weakened the evil energy in you.

This will help suppress your evil energy.

Take it.

I've drunk over 100 bowls of medicine from you these past few days,

and nothing's worked.

Can you actually cure me or not?

The evil energy in you has been festering too long.

You can't rush it. It has to be treated slowly.

Actually,

I know a faster way to cure it.

How about

you fall in love with me?

I can use the blood of your heart

to break the curse.

Sorry.

I cultivate to save lives, not for love or romance.

Grandmaster, do you think Immortal Li Mo will never fall in love?

Do you always talk this much?
