Hi there folks.
This is Luke, your manager, speaking.
Just a reminder that today is our last day,
so unfortunately, we can't accept refills on large popcorns.
But, you can head over to concessions now,
and get your medium and large bags for fifty-percent off.
Thank you for choosing the Royal Alamo,
the best place to watch a movie.
This summer I went swimming
This summer I might have drowned
But I held my breath and I kicked my feet
And I moved my arms around
I moved my arms around
This summer I swam in the ocean
And I swam in a swimming pool
Salt my wounds, chlorine my eyes. I'm a self-destructive fool
I'm self-destructive fool
Yo, Hunter.
Last day man, you feeling it?
This summer I did the backstroke
And you know that that's not all
I did the breaststroke and the butterfly
and the old Australian crawl
Hey, Hunter!
Last day man... this really going to be the last night at the Alamo?
‘Fraid so.
Last call for “Taft the Musical.”
There is no late admission.
If you arrive late you will not be seated.
You're late.
Lorenzo in yet?
Yep.
Luke fix the popper?
Nope.
Hey, welcome to the Alamo.
How are you? Thanks for coming.
Vin! Oh, it's good to see you. Thank you for coming.
Is Carol joining us? No... okay.
Hey kids! There we go.
I’m currently standing outside
the famed Royal Alamo Cinema, a local staple.
On it’s last day.
Yes, you heard me right, folks.
The Royal Alamo is closing.
I'm joined now by longtime manager Luke Plimpton.
How are you feeling today, Luke?
Um, I uh. I feel sad, you know,
I mean, it's a tragedy, really.
My father, Hank Plimpton, he built this theater in 1973, and,
you know, anyone living in this town or who loves movies
probably had a life changing experience here, thanks to my dad.
So it's, you know,
but, y’know, with streaming services and all of that.
It’s just... the competition’s outcompeted us basically.
Tragic.
And what do you have to say to those
who will miss watching movies on the big screen here at the Royal Alamo
and the thousands of other theaters
that are closing around the nation?
I’m happy that at least a generation
Got to share and experience memories here.
But movies and cinema...
they’re an important part of our um, culture Linda.
And I would hope...
It seems now that a young man has
taken to dancing outside the closing theater.
Bystanders have gathered for what seems to be
some kind of performance art piece.
I'm Linda Chung
and you're watching News10 ABC,
throwing it back to you, Jan.
This is it.
This is the epitome of humanity, Lorenzo.
Human beings in their prime state,
living like primitive animals.
Where were we?
George Lucas’ black wife.
Exactly!
The man's into the exotic.
Shit's fetishistic.
He'll fuck 'em, but he won't film 'em.
Bullshit, there's tons of positive black characters in the Star Wars universe.
Mace Windu, Finn, Lando Calrissian.
I'm not talking about the black characters.
Then who else?
The fucking Jews.
There's no Jews in Star Wars.
Let's talk about the prequels, Lorenzo.
I haven't seen such blatant racism in a movie since Birth of a-fuckin'-Nation,
and at least that movie had some innovative editing.
Come to think of it.
You know, the last time a studio really took
risks in a franchise, like, I mean, really took an artistic risk?
“Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Yeah, that's right, nobody says it.
But those three Pirates movies were bold and inventive,
gorgeous cinematography, captivating mythology,
and a bangin’ score courtesy of Hans Zimmer himself.
Dude, part of the ship, part of the crew!
Okay, enough.
Can I get you anything else?
Uh...
Nah, nah, I’m good.
Enjoy your movie.
Well, thank you man, you too. I-I mean, uh...
Happens all the time.
Welcome to the Royal Alamo.
What can I get you?
Nothing at all.
You don't want anything?
The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want...
Alright, alright.
I see what's going on here.
If you're not going to order anything, please step out of the line, sir.
There are are other customers.
Jesus fucking Christ.
Yo! Free Bible?
I'll take one.
Dope man, I heard there’s some raw shit in here.
I’ll impart unto you those words that Matthew said unto...
That's alright.
We are always here, ready to embrace you.
We can help you find the good Lord.
I'm not looking for him.
No faith?
You'll perish.
Well... shit.
Hey, how's it going?
And, we're back at the Royal Alamo!
I'm here now with Albany, father of two,
Paul Dhakshinamoorthy.
Paul, what does it mean to you to be here on the theater’s last day?
Oh, you know, it's a shame Linda.
a lot of great memories.
I remember rushing over here to watch Star Wars Episode Seven
while my wife was in labor.
And, as soon as the babies came out, I got in the car,
went to the 8pm showing, and um...
To be here now
on the last day with them?
With my girls?
It’s just I don’t know I just get that I thought that I
Beautiful! Just beautiful!
We're going to take a break from our live coverage.
When we come back? A new story out of Cohoes.
A dying World War II vet who says he knows the truth
about the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart.
Airplane malfunction or bad pilot?
Stick around for the scoop, throwing it back to you, Jan.
Way down in the state of Georgia
Through the swamps and everglades
There's a hole in Tiger Mountain
God help the man who gets lost in Miller's Cave
I had a girl in Waycross, Georgia
But she had unfaithful ways
You know, she made me feel unwanted
Like the bats and the bears in Miller’s Cave
You know, she made me feel unwanted
But I showed her I was great
Most wanted man in the state of Georgia
They’ll never find me cause I’m lost in Miller’s Cave
Which way to Bad Bloke?
It’s just... that way.
Thanks.
Yo.
Oh, hey.
What's that?
I’m taking pictures of everything that happens to me in a day.
Alright, Diane Arbus, who says I happened to you?
What's up, smart ass?
So uh, how you feeling about all this?
‘Bout all what?
You know.
Oh, yeah.
Well...
you know, I'm gonna miss this place,
but honestly,
I'm excited to leave this town and never look back.
Good fucking riddance.
When you off to the city?
Monday.
Packed your bags?
Last week.
How about you, huh?
How ‘bout me what?
Oh, come on, Mr. “Tampa Tight End”
Don't think I haven't heard.
Yeah, yeah, about that...
You got the letter on you?
Distinguished ability and enormous potential.
We talking about the same person?
Give me that back.
Seriously though, Lorenzo,
it's incredible.
I'm. I'm proud of you.
Yeah, yeah.
And, I've been thinking. And uh...
Have you ever done something your whole life
and never ask yourself if you even wanted to do it?
Parker!
Nice job whippin’ Niskayuna’s ass!
Hell of a homecoming game, son.
Jesus Christ, you gave them boys some sweeeeeet hell.
Thanks, Mr. Miller. Yeah.
Yeah, hey, how’s your daddy doing?
Doing good.
Yeah, yeah? Well, listen up.
You show those guava assholes
some hometown pride down in Tampa, you hear?!
Huh?! Huh?!
Alright, Lorenzo, you make us proud.
- Jackpot! - I will try.
Make us proud, Lorenzo.
Do you want anything from the stand?
Soda, popcorn?
I can get the hot stuff?
It's your future.
I see...
popcorn and a hot dog and...
and they're all delivered here before my four o'clock break.
So let it be written, so let it be done.
And mustard!
Howdy.
Hi, welcome to the Royal Alamo. How can I help you?
Can I have one ticket for “The Bad Bloke on Bedford Avenue”...
uh, the four o’clock show please.
Yeah, that’s gonna be ten dollars.
Yeah.
What happens if I'm in the picture?
Huh?
What if I'm in the movie?
Are you?
I’m a stunt double.
You do stunts?
Honest injun.
Right...
What's your name?
Do you know the name of any stunt doubles?
No. Do you have any proof?
Proof that I'm a stunt double,
or proof that I'm in the movie?
Both, but the first part first.
Here you go.
- Rex Fuel? - That’s me.
That's your name?
Christian name? No, ma’am.
Rex Fuel packs a better punch than “Wesley Fredericks”.
- Is that? - That's Kevin Bacon. Yep.
Is this... is this Footloose?
Yeah!
You remember that scene where he's in the uh... the warehouse
and he's, he's dancing, and, uh...
flipping back and forth and all that?
That was you?
Yeah!
That was me! Yeah.
I worked as a professional stunt man for four decades, okay?
Starting out in the early 70s,
and I was the Baconator’s, uh, personal stunt double.
The what?
Oh, yeah, that was our nickname for him.
Personal friends only.
The Baconator?
Mhm, you know, Kevin and I were mighty chummy.
Kind of like two peas in a pod. Until, uh
“Mystic River,” that is.
Clint Eastwood, didn't take a liking to me and uh...
that was the end of that. Never worked together again.
And you did stunts on this movie?
I was the stunt double for Dingo Dan, the, uh, Aussie detective...
from Brisbane, sent to Brooklyn
to infiltrate the heroin dealers in Chinatown.
To win back the honor of his woman's name.
Only problem was the director...
was a piece of shit!
So, you’re kind of famous then?
No honey, I’m just an old chunk of coal.
But I’m gonna be a diamond some day.
Okay, whatever, man, you can... go ahead.
Thanks, toots.
Doobi-doobi-scoopi-scoopi-doobi
What's good?
Yo, did I show you our new album?
Oh, shit!
Congrats, man.
“Withdrawing in Disgust is Not the Same Thing as Apathy”
“Solipsism or Syphilis”
“Let's Fuck in Plato's Cave”
Hunter!
Hunter, what the hell are you doing, huh!?
I give you a ten minute break, twenty minutes ago.
What’s that, your third cigarette, huh?
Get back inside! Lorenzo can't handle the stand by himself.
I just got here, man.
You’re skating on thin ice, Hunter.
You know, just because we're closing doesn't mean that I can't withhold
that severance check you've been so jumpy about.
Really? It's our last day, man. Give me a fucking break.
You are in need of a serious attitude adjustment, okay?
A new sense of direction.
I mean, you want to spend your life,
hanging out with these dope peddling dirt merchants?
Hey man, we're artists.
Dylan... was an artist!
And stop smoking all this pot out here.
You’re driving all my customers away.
What customers? We’re closing man.
Yeah man,
we're just, like, having a conversation.
Sharing a dialogue, experiencing life.
Don't put a damper on us living our lives to the fullest, just because,
you're not secure with your station in life.
You need to seize your moment.
Listen...
chief.
I'm secure.
I have a job.
So do we.
Being in a band is not a job, any more than making
shitty songs in your parent’s basement is a living.
Man, fuck the kind of work you got to do to make a living.
Fuck money, fuck material possessions.
Once I make enough off these CDs, I'm moving to the astral plane.
Wanting is for the material drones
who fall slave to the pitfalls of capitalism.
Woah, Hailey!
That is a beautiful and astute analysis.
I say we boycott this ugly moshpit of consumerism.
Yeah, that's right, we're boycotting the Alamo.
Flaming Hot Cheetos popcorn.
The total is $6.94.
Would you like to round that up to seven
and donate to St. Jude's Children's Hospital?
What?! No!
Fuckin’ chump.
See that tubby piece of shit
with the Cheetos popcorn?
Yeah.
Not only
- did he order Cheetos popcorn... - Despicable.
but he wouldn't even round up six cents for charity.
Damn!
That's cold blooded.
I mean look at this kid?
Look at him, he's dying and all that blubbery motherfucker
can think about is Cheetos popcorn?
Man, fuck Cheetos popcorn!
Damn right!
Kid’s probably dead, though.
What the fuck, man? Have some faith.
The picture's dated August 10th, 2007.
That's more than a decade old!
I mean, what are the odds of this kid surviving cancer?
Not. Fucking. Likely.
Okay, everybody, if you have tickets,
you can line up inside.
If you don't have tickets, you can purchase them at the box office.
Just please refrain from crowding around the front doors,
people need to get in.
Linda Chung, News10 ABC here
at the closing Royal Alamo Cinema.
I'm talking now with box office attendant Deana Richardson.
Deana, you’re a longtime employee of this beloved theater.
How would you describe your job for the folks at home?
I, I give people tickets.
Some would say you're the eyes and ears of the Alamo,
the first friendly face that everyone sees
when they open these historic doors.
How important is that to you?
It's cool.
As a local of this town,
what's it meant having such an institution for a theater?
Do you have memories of watching movies here as a kid with mom and dad?
I'm more of a TV person, I think.
We work in a wretched hive
of scum and villainy.
And, if you ask me? This is karma.
We don't deserve to be open.
Why are you so stubborn?
You're like a man with a fork in a world of soup.
Come tomorrow, this place will be gone,
just a distant fucking memory,
and you're already over here pissing on its ashes.
This place closing is exactly what I need to get my life on track.
Can we get a nacho and a small popcorn?
I'm sorry,
so being jobless in this fucking market
is your idea of getting your life on track?
I mean, I'm just trying to figure out why
the fuck you worked here so long if you hated it.
You’re like a priest working at an abortion clinic.
This place is obsolete.
Why pay nine dollars for a bag of popcorn
that will clog your arteries and shrink your life expectancy
when you could spend that very same nine dollars on an
HBO subscription where, get this,
you’ll have ten times the content?
Oh, fuck that! First off, it's called “Max”, now.
Second, you're comparing oil paints to Crayons, man.
Don't you get it?
It's about the experience, the sound, the screen,
the communal feeling of it all.
Spare me the nostalgic bullshit Ann Landers.
You're over here wistfully reminiscing over every fucking popcorn kernel.
Theaters are dead.
Deader than fucking disco.
Yeah, yeah, whatever.
Just don't try and blame the Alamo for your
stunning lack of conviction, man.
You call it a lack of conviction,
I call it an abundance of clarity.
I'm one step ahead, man.
I reject conviction, and I reject the rat race before it can reject me.
The world doesn't care about people like me.
The world's not patient enough to wait for people like me.
So rather than play the rules of the world and kill myself
trying to fit into some hierarchal standard, setting myself up
for certain failure, I choose to be responsible for myself
and only myself, instead of wasting time in a realm of activity
that has nothing to do with me or with what I want.
But, you see?
that's your problem, you don’t want anything.
What?
Attention Royal Alamo customers.
“Schindler's List: Refueled”
is sold out.
Repeat, “Schindler's List: Refueled”
sold out.
You disappointed in me?
Hunter?
Carson?
Hey, man.
What's up?
Nothing much.
It's crazy to see you still working here.
It's like you're back in high school or something, right?
If it ain't broke.
Hunter, this is my life partner, Valeria.
Valeria, Hunter.
We met in High School.
Um, so, what are you doing here?
Oh, yeah! Well, Valeria and I were in the city last night,
we were at a fundraising gala for wounded veterans and their families.
Let me tell you, it is so important to give back.
A lot of these families have kids in the hospital, you know, cancer,
and whatnot, and they're just drowning in debt.
I mean, it's just awful.
Right...
I mean... look. The military is a complicated institution,
no two ways about it. But these are our troops,
and we got to do something, right?
You gonna order anything or...?
Oh, yeah... yeah.
Can we get a small popcorn, unsalted...
and a box of Snow Caps.
Uh, you guys got Lacroix?
Uh, no.
Oh... no hassle in the castle.
Anything with stevia, then.
We have water.
That's perfect, light ice.
Okay, that'll be $13.95.
Would you like to round up to fourteen
and donate to St. Jude's Children's Hospital?
No. Not today.
Ummmmm...
I’m sorry, where do I tap?
Cash only.
Okay, um.
Can you break a hundred?
So, how you like working here?
It's been, what, seven, eight years now?
Yeah, man.
I'm actually thinking about quitting.
Probably going to quit... today.
Well, it's... it's closing today, right?
Yeah. Yeah. We're closing. Yeah.
Well uh, the trailers are about to end, so we're gonna head on in there.
Anyways, great catching up with you, man. Seriously.
Let's do swordfish tonight.
Yeah.
Hi, this is, Luke again.
Just a reminder that the 9 p.m.
showing of “Taft The Musical” will be the final showing.
To repeat,
“Taft the Musical” tickets are now available for our last showing.
And, while you’re at it, get some “Taft” sized
buckets of popcorn and refreshments at the concessions stand.
Thank you for coming to the Royal Alamo Cinema.
The best place to watch a movie.
Ron, buddy.
Ron!
If you can hear me, can you please go sweep the auditorium?
Man, don't you just hate movies?
Yeah, I know what you're thinking...
he just watched a movie. What's he going on about?
Sure, I get it.
But, I’m a firm believer that life is about
subjecting yourself to pain and misery.
Movies are just a constant reminder
of how drab and ordinary the real world is.
They offer a fleeting escape, a dream in the darkness.
It's a cruel trick.
Two hours of adventure and then “pft” it ends.
Back to the real world.
Movies are so fake and bullshit.
Pardon my French,
I'm feeling a bit glum at the moment, and the movies just...
just piss me off.
They just make me feel so insecure about my own feelings,
both as a human being and more specifically as a man.
I don't know, it just bugs me, man.
You know, I'd love to see a real and raw relationship
portrayed on the screen.
Something that's truthful to the experiences I would want.
Now, you might ask me, what's a real and raw relationship?
It's taken me a lot to find the answer, but I... I think the key is talking.
Trading books, trading music, making her a playlist of your favorite songs,
or songs that remind you of her.
That's when you know it's a reality.
That's when it becomes serious.
Then you drink cheap wine and cheap whiskey and smoke bad weed
and engage in lots and lots of unremarkable but
somehow... special sex.
That's never portrayed in movies.
Anyways, you're probably asking, what's this cat going on about?
Well you see,
something happened today that made me think twice about all this.
I was watching the movie right before you came in.
The new Howard Taft musical? Quite good, actually.
Russell Crowe's... unrecognizable.
There's this one musical number, about an hour and twenty in
along the side of the Panama Canal and Taft,
or rather Russell Crowe,
he's just belting out this long note in this sweeping wide shot,
and I'm swept up too, you know, in the moment.
So anyways, I was really digging this one scene. I was in it.
My heart was beating, man,
in that very moment,
for some reason, like just because I felt the urge to... I turned to my left.
I see this gorgeous girl, this woman.
She had a great head of hair, honey blonde with a hint of strawberry red,
and these big green eyes. Nice rack, too.
And we locked eyes.
We fell in love.
Or so I thought, she left after the screening and we didn’t talk...
but I'll be damned, my friend. That was love.
I'm sure of it.
So now I'm thinking I've got this theory, dig this.
What if movies aren't bullshit?
What if they're not fake at all?
I have this, uh this, like conspiracy theory.
Well, no, that makes it sound nuts. It's more like a...
a well researched hypothesis.
The government created the illusion of movie making and cameras
and all that stuff to hide the fact that...
that movies are, in fact, real.
Stick with me for a sec, I see the look on your face.
You're like, this guy is the Mayor of Crazy Town.
Okay, so you ever watch a movie and just think...
I've seen that before?
Like, it's almost exactly what you remember
from a dream, or a previous experience,
or just a thought in the back of your mind?
It's like perpetual deja vu.
That's because I think movies are dreams we’ve had,
experiences we've lived, realities we haven't delved into yet.
So maybe in three years I'll be watching some movie
and I'll see that girl, the blonde one from earlier,
and it won't be my mind
playing games. It won't be just some lookalike actress,
like, you know how Ashley Judd looks like Charlize Theron?
It won't be that. It'll be her.
The girl from the movie, not Charlize Theron,
because subconsciously,
without my knowledge,
that movie will exist within a parallel reality,
one that could have existed or does exist in a separate universe.
Where I’m with this girl
and we have kids and a life.
We've grown old together.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is...
is maybe movies aren't bullshit, maybe they're great.
Maybe movies reflect the... the past, the present, and what could be.
Isn't that something special?
The silver screen is just a portal to another dimension.
A reality of movies.
See, I think the projector up there holds the power to everything.
That's why the room is so secretive.
My theory or...
or rather... well researched hypothesis?
because the projector is the key to that portal.
When the film goes through the projector,
it opens up that parallel universe.
Just imagine,
entering that universe...
living in the dream.
In a world of screen legends,
where every moment is a scene, and...
and every second has a score to it.
Life would be grander.
Wouldn't every problem be solved?
See, I think all of you guys are in on it.
I think it's an open secret amongst all you employees.
But a secret nonetheless.
How much they pay ya to keep that secret?
I'm just kidding.
I know you wouldn't tell me.
You can't smoke in here.
Hey, all you smokers out there!
Feel free to purchase your cigarettes at the vending machine in the lobby.
Scuse me?
Pretty good movie, huh?
I'm in it.
Rex Fuel,
stunt double.
I'm trying to watch the movie.
George Lucas?
I'll tell you what that fucker supports...
racism.
Hunter, listen to yourself.
It's Star Wars, pure escapism. Fantasy.
Institutional racism is still deep rooted
in a galaxy far, far away Lorenzo.
Bullshit! George Lucas’ wife is black.
If the man was such a racist would he have married a black woman?
I've been looking for you for
14 months just waiting to put a bullet in your head.
Where’s Carletta?
You ain't ever gonna find her.
It's time you say “hasta la vista” to your brains Dingo Dan,
cause I’m the motherfucker
you never should have fucked with.
Take your shot, Mortimer.
Ooh!
You got ice cold water running through your veins, boy.
Mighty hot today Dan, I'm so parched I think I might just want a sip.
Wait, Ringo!
What do you wanna hear, mate?
That I have the cash?!
That I have the six million in drug money El Jeffe owes you?
Bingo...
Dingo Dan.
As a person of exceptional
athletic skill and strong personal character. Man!
Man, that's great, Lorenzo.
Woah, woah. Hey!
Whoa, whoa.
Hey, where do you think you're going?
- Inside. - Inside?
The film's already started, no late admission.
- We couldn't find parking! - Woah woah woah.
Hey, are those Goobers? Huh?
We don't sell Goobers!
No outside snacks!
- Are you being fucking wise with me? - What?
This is my theater, my rules.
No late admissions. 4 o’ clock is 4 o’ clock.
Now scram.
Scram! My theater!
What’s playing at Regal?
Dingo Dan, you son of a bitch!
You Australian son of a bitch!
Crikey! Git! Motherfuckas!
Die!
Hey!
What?!
My card.
If you ever need any stunt work or... anything else?
Let me know.
Where's Carletta?
Where is she?!
Franks’s got her...
on Bedford Avenue.
I swear to god, that’s all I know! Just...
listen man, don’t-don’t... kill me.
I swear to God, I don't know anything else!
So he was recording on a phone?
No, with a camera.
Like an actual camera, maybe a Canon.
It was dark, but it wasn't a phone.
Mm.
Alright, I'll get Randy on this.
Who?!
Randy, you don't know Randy?
They don't know Randy.
That big, beefy, baldheaded asshole.
Motherfucker’s the devil incarnate.
Motherfucker’s like one of those pig guards in Jabba's palace.
Motherfucker’s the worst.
Little known fact? Asshole took his son to see “American Sniper”
three fucking times on his 10th birthday... in IMAX!
Man, that's fucked if you ask me.
That's fucking Randy.
That's Randy.
You can torture me all you want, but I will kill you!
Look...
What's this all about?
You can't just drag me in here, I’m a paying customer!
I paid for a ticket!
Alright fine, no talking? I want a refund.
Russell
Wilkie.
So what were you doing in there, Russell?
I was watching the movie that I paid for.
That's before, uh, Mr. Clean over here kicked me out!
Well Mr. Clean over here says you were illegally recording a movie.
Ah! Oh, yeah? Yeah? Says who?!
I just said he did.
Well, that's fucking bullshit.
What's this?
No, no, no. Hey, hey! Dude, come on.
You are not allowed to go through there! That’s...
That’s illegal?!
Mm? Yeah.
Come on, last chance. Admit it. We let you go.
There's nothing to admit, man.
Look-eeee here.
Caught red handed.
Okay dude, just... just give me back the camera and I'll go. Okay?
I will leave. I just, I will. just... okay?
Oh yeah, piggy...
Alright man, turn it off dude!
Just... listen man, just turn it off dude. I will leave!
I will fucking go! Just turn it off. Please dude.
Turn it off! I mean it, man!
Turn it off!
So, porky. Just how I like it.
Oh, give me an oink!
Hunter,
you’re doing way too much thinking man.
Fuck that motherfucker, he ain’t worth a moment of your time.
It's not just him.
It's the constant lecturing from Luke... I mean he’s holding
that check over my head like it's the Sword of Damocles.
And fucking Lorenzo, man...
I can't go back to the stand without Johnnie Cochran interrogating me
about every decision I made in the last nine years.
Yo Hunter,
I've gone down this path before.
It only leads to a world of hurt, my friend.
Ain't nothing in that check gonna make you whole.
What you need is some love in your life.
You need a lady.
Pussy ain’t gonna solve any of my problems, Sergio.
A momentary distraction, sure, but no. I’m not like you, man.
I can’t just go from girl to girl.
Au Contraire, mon ami. I’m cuffed.
Seriously?
Yeah, man, this Canadian girl.
We’ve done everything.
Pussy, ass, mouth, even feet shit. You name it.
She's kinky as fuck.
Tells me to put it in her ear and shit.
She's harsh too, like...
I never felt comfortable around dominant women, you know?
Probably because of the fucked up standards ingrained in me about
societal norms and masculinity and whatnot?
But she's an experimental girl, Hunter.
She’s like the Jacques Cousteau of coitus, loves to explore.
Oh, she does tattoos too.
Oh shit, that's dope man.
Thanks, Hunter.
Yeah, we're getting matching ones,
so, I'm going to get, like, another lightning bolt
right next to this lightning bolt.
So it's going to be like two lightning bolts.
A permanent symbol of our everlasting love and affection or,
I don't know, she said some shit like that, man.
Wait, wait a minute.
- Two lightning bolts? - Yeah, man.
Like one right next to the other?
- Yup. - Like one parallel to the other.
Fuck yeah.
So...
the SS logo?
Huh?
You know, the Gestapo, the Third Reich?
Sergio, that's the Nazi logo.
I don't know about that, man.
Anyways, I'd love to meet her.
Oh, she's right here.
Hailey, meet Hunter.
I'm not saying that I love you
I'm not saying that I care... if you love me
I'm not saying that I care
I'm not saying I'll be there when you want me
I can't give my heart to you
Or tell you that I'd sing your name... up to the sky
I can't lay the promise down
That I'll always be around when you need me
I’m the bad bloke motherfucka!
Oh my god!
I may not be alone each time you see me
Along the street or in a small café
But still I won't deny you or mistreat you
Baby, if you let me have my way
I'm not saying I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say... that make you cry
I can't say I'll always do, the things you want me to
I'm not saying I'd be true but I'll try
I'm not saying I'd be true but I'll try
Deana, for the last time,
Stop smoking that insufferable vape in front of the customers.
Yo... verdict?
Not gonna lie,
that was a very bad hot dog.
What can I say?
They call me the Bobby Flay of the Royal Alamo.
You heard about that guy Luke caught recording the movie?
No, what guy? I've been in here all day.
I don't know, just some guy.
Luke and Randy have him in the security room.
Apparently, the cops will be here later to pick him up.
Damn.
Who's at the stand right now? Hunter?
I don't know, probably.
Is that a hint of contempt I detect, Mr. Parker?
- No, I love Hunter, but... - But...?
But, he's just in a funk right now.
How so?
I don't know.
Come on Lorenzo, if you're going to climb the tower, ring the bell.
I feel him screaming out.
I see him banging at the wall, and I don't know how to help.
You think, you should just talk to him?
Talk?
Trust me, Deana, we do nothing but talk.
Things are just kind of tense right now.
And... besides, it always ends in an argument
and... I don't want that.
I guess I just have a predilection for pacifism.
Sounds to me like you got a predilection for being a pussy.
I don't know, being around all that negativity 24/7,
you start to think.
Start to think what?
Does he have a point?
About what? Shit was he trying to tell you
Forrest Gump’s a racist?
- Motherfucker’s been pulling that shit - No no, not about that.
- since day one. - No no, not about that.
I'm talking about this place, about the Alamo.
I mean, was our time working here just the same as anything else?
You know?
Was it all for nothing?
I don't know, man.
As long as you liked it.
As long as it meant something to you... s’all that matters.
Don't put a hat on a hat. It’s not that complicated.
We were here one day. The next day we weren’t.
You should be excited.
You're about to go off to a brand new place.
You're about to meet a ton of new and interesting people.
Everyone keeps saying that, but I don't know if it's true.
Lorenzo,
I know it's a weird fucking time.
We’re out of here in a week.
It's wild, it's crazy, it's amazing.
And, yeah, it's fucking sad.
I get it.
But, this is a good thing that you've got going here.
Don't fuck it up because of a lump in your throat.
Yeah.
You’re probably right.
Just, don't be a stranger when you're living it up in Tampa, okay?
God, I hate when people say that.
The fuck does that even mean, “don’t be a stranger”?
All I'm saying is,
this was one chapter, and now it's time to turn the page
and find out what's next.
Or, you know...
fuck it, right?
No piece of paper’s gotta tell you where to go.
What’s that?
It’s just an Italian muscle relaxant.
It just helps with the stress.
Horse tranquilizer?
Hm?
Okay...
Can you state your name?
Sergio. S-E-R-G-I-O
Sergio from the Saratoga County Dragon Cocks.
You can find our music on iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify, TikTok and...
oh, yeah, by our CD.
Are you in line for the movie?
A movie? Here? Hells no. We’re boycotting this place.
Breaking news!
You heard it here first, folks.
A boycott has now started at the closing Royal Alamo Cinema.
This day keeps getting more and more interesting.
If you want the insider scoop, make sure to stick around
with News10 ABC.
Hey, asshole!
I told you and your friends to leave!
Suck my cock, Plimpton!
You cunt!
To the owner of the
red pickup truck in the parking lot, please report to the box office
immediately or your vehicle will be towed.
Excuse me.
Just a pack of “Sour Patch Kids”, please.
Uh, you're a little short.
Four bucks.
Four bucks? For candy?! That’s highway robbery, man.
No, we don’t have a
senior discount past 1:30.
Hey!
Thanks!
Hey. What's your name?
Uh...
Lorenzo Parker.
Nice to meet ya. I’m Ava. You work here?
What's it look like?
Oh, yeah. That was stupid.
So, what are you watching?
I don't know yet. What’s playing?
Well...
Do you want to see an epic musical
about the life of President William Howard Taft?
Are you craving an ultra-violent
crime movie about an Australian cop in Brooklyn?
Or... are you ready to experience
the long awaited “Schindler's List” sequel starring Vin Diesel?
What would you choose?
I don't go to the movies.
You work at a movie theater and you don't watch movies?
No, I work at a movie theater.
I watch movies, just not here.
That doesn't make any sense.
Well,
when I used to go to the movies here with my dad,
he'd do this thing where we'd arrive at the theater
and check out the matinee posters before buying tickets, and uh,
and he'd let me decide what we saw.
He'd say...
listen, what we watch all depends on how you're feeling.
The question you have to ask yourself is, who are you today
and where do you want to go?
On that day, I was curious.
I wanted to explore.
We watched
a 35mm print of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
It's this old movie about aliens and UFOs.
Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut.
The line went out the lobby doors and down the block.
I had never ran into more people I knew from around the neighborhood
at one show.
It was the place to be that night.
Seeing those faces tall as three story buildings...
on that day,
I was happy.
So, who are you today?
And where do you want to go?
Well, I like musicals.
Taft it is.
Does it have a happy ending?
I hope so.
One day... I will find you, Carletta.
One day... I will hold you in my arms.
One day... we will be together again.
Carletta!
Hey. You're Rex Fuel, right?
Yeah.
Oh, man, I, I fuckin’ knew it!
I... I'm such a huge fan, man.
Shit. “Risky Rex”, the stunt man.
Uh... can I, can I take a picture?
Sure. Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
You know, Bacon used to talk you up all the time on Letterman.
Okay, you gotta tell me about “Flatliners.”
Is it true you actually asked Schumacher to stop your heart?
No, that was Kiefer Sutherland.
Yeah, and you know, he never recovered.
Alright, that's gonna be five bucks.
Blasphemy!
This is a Satanist establishment!
Do not go further for the silver screen will unleash
the infallible fury of God!
That guy looks like Kevin Bacon.
Yo, Hunter.
How art thou?
I don't know if you heard, but we decided to end our
boycott the Alamo campaign.
We chose love, not hate.
Yeah well, the Alamo didn't need
a boycott to ensure it's death.
True that.
Streaming, unfortunately, has served as an impromptu catalyst of sorts
to perhaps the inescapable demise of theatrical exhibition.
A tool for the capitalist overlords,
formerly known as Motion Picture Studios,
to breed brand loyal customers from cradle to grave
like pigs in a farmhouse stable.
Um...
yeah, man.
It's a damn shame if you ask me.
I was going to take Hailey to go see the new Tilda Swinton movie.
Tilda Swinton?
Hell yeah. man. I'm a huge admirer.
Right on, she was fire in those Narnia movies.
Narnia was tight bro,
but I'm talking about “Orlando,” man.
I'm talking about Sally fucking Potter.
“Orlando” has wonderful
mise-en-scène.
We're big Sally Potter fans.
Shit, Sergio, you're like a cinephile or something.
Yes, sir. Cinema is king.
Yeah, man.
I just don't know how to feel about everything.
I mean,
I should be sad, right?
I don't know, Hunter.
That's an interesting take.
You see, Orlando's not really a sad movie.
It's more about the imperceptibility of time and age.
No man, about the Alamo.
Oh, yeah. Right on.
I worked here for so long...
practically grew up here.
I think you should become a Quaker.
You know those guys from “Moby Dick”?
Pilgrims, Plymouth Rock, all that shit?
You see, Quakerism’s this beautiful branch of commune loving people.
I really dig that.
They look at nature and contemplation as a means of,
accepting your place in this world.
As a means of accepting your limitations.
Great.
I’m talking to myself here.
No, I'm listening.
You're feeling guilty because you don't know
whether you feel sad about the Alamo closing or not.
And I think that guilt is some type of, manifestation
of a subconscious desire to break free from your current state of malaise and
open yourself up to your true feelings about the Alamo.
I don’t think you're all sad and fucked up about your life Hunter.
I think you’re all sad and fucked up because you love this place,
and you're never going to see it again.
Everything's so small from here.
Yo, how many people you think are eating ass right now?
Like at least ten, right?
Probably twenty?
What do you think?
Yo, Hunter!
The future starts today, man.
The future starts today.
You betrayed me, Dan.
You left me with a bullet in my gut
and a ruthless gang of chinamen who tortured me for three winters!
You call that honor and decency?!
Don't give me that look.
What look?
The silently judging
from a pedestal asshole type look.
I know it because you always do it.
This is a good thing, man.
Why can't you be happy for me?
Because I know you, man.
Three years ago, you were saying the same thing.
You're spitting in the wind working here
so you’re... gonna quit your job and go back to school, right?
That was it.
You get all fired up about your aimless life, and then you pin it on the Alamo.
We got a word for that, Hunter.
A fucking scapegoat.
Fuck you, man.
Yeah, fuck me. Whatever.
But just give this some thought.
Maybe, just maybe, if you weren't so caught up in all this
“woe is me” horseshit, you'd open up your eyes
and see, just for a moment, that you weren't wasting time here.
I mean, you should be grateful
you got to work at a place that makes a real difference.
Who else gets to say that?
I don't know, doctors, teachers?
Not a bunch of fucking movie theater employees.
We serve people food and sweep up their trash when they're gone.
Ain’t no difference between us and the fucking McDonald's down the street.
Hunter, have you ever hear the phrase:
“Gratitude is riches, complaint is poverty?”
Enough of the whole “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” routine.
- Have you?! - Yes, Lorenzo. Gratitude is riches.
Complaint is poverty.
I heard it from my mom when she spoon fed me carrots at the age of six.
I heard it from Doris fucking Day.
And now, for some inexplicable reason, I'm hearing it from you.
You're getting real prosecutorial, man, and you're crossing some lines.
Last I checked, you're wearing a button up polo, not judge’s robes.
Forget it boss, he ain’t coming.
You fucked with the wrong Aussie.
Look, I'm sorry.
Truth be told, I'm really going to miss you, man.
I know today hasn't been the easiest day, but...
I'm here for you.
What happened with your friend earlier, I know that shit was tough.
It probably wasn't what you needed right now.
You done?
No, as a matter of fact, I'm not. What the fuck is your problem?
What happened today?
That was torture.
Every word of encouragement I'd given myself, every justification
for my lack of achievement was thrown away,
flushed down the fucking drain.
- I don't need your life advice. - Well, then stop complaining.
I'm sick of it. I always hear the same thing from you.
It's no, no, no, all the time.
Everything's gotta be a fucking challenge for you.
Eventually, you got to look at what's being presented to you,
bite the bullet and say “yes.”
Alright, you've got it all figured out, right?
What's next?
What are the answers, Lorenzo? Tell me, because I'm waiting
- with bated fuckin’ breath, man. - I’m not doing this.
Dan!
Do you remember,
when we was running from those Chinamen
and we thought we wouldn’t make it til morning?
If we make it out of this alive
sweet Carletta, I promise the killing’s gonna stop.
Listen to yourself.
Here you are, packing your bags,
waving goodbye, leaving everything behind,
leaving me behind. All because what?
Oh, I might as well go play D2 and dedicate the next
four years of my life to tackling beefy, brainless ogres on a football field.
I'm doing it because that's what's expected of me.
And you don't even want it, man.
You could care less about Tampa.
You could care less about football.
Somebody told you, Lorenzo, we plotted out your life for you.
And you need to take this map from point A to point B,
and instead of making your own mind and your own path,
you took to it like a duck to fucking water.
It's so easy to talk about my life,
isn’t it Hunter?
You know what?
I am disappointed in you.
I looked up to you, man.
You spent the last couple of years doing backstrokes
in a giant pool of pity and just because you're starting
to drown a little, doesn't mean I have to jump in and haul your ass out.
Learn to fucking swim.
Fuck you, Lorenzo.
You spent this entire day trying to milk some sort of regret out of me.
You're trying to sway my mind with your move on
find a direction bullshit like you're the Maharishi fucking Yogi.
I love you, Dingo Dan.
You’re a fine sheila, Carletta.
But I'm not made for love.
You deserve a better man, a decent man.
I’m... just a cold hearted killer.
You're leaving, man.
As soon as you're gone, I'll have nothing and nobody.
Your parting words are really going to be “Fuck you, Hunter. Get a life”?
That is so unfair, man.
Fuck you. That is so unfair.
You're going to spend four years in that shit school then come back
a little jaded with a bit of sand in your eye and a chip on your shoulder.
Then when you're stuck in that hole, you're going to realize, oh!
“Maybe I shouldn't have been such a judgmental prick.”
Hey, what the fuck?
- Where’s my movie? - What’s going on here?
- I paid for a movie! - C’mon man!
What the fuck did I eat?
Concessions
Coming to an end tonight
Concessions
Let’s make our last concession tonight
Are you the manager
of this establishment?
Uh, yeah but what's going on Officer?
We're responding to a call about a murder in the restroom.
Murder?!
Oh, my God, is that guy dead?
Holy fuckin’ shit!
Mr. Plimpton! Mr. Plimpton!
A word about the murder at the Royal Alamo!
I gotta go, I gotta go. There's a murder.
Alright, Mr. Lodowski,
tell me what you remember.
I cleaned the restroom...
he was groaning from one of the stalls.
Next thing I know, he's dead.
And what time did this happen?
‘Bout an hour ago?
Can I take my break boss?
Yeah, Ron, of course.
Just make sure you clean the bathroom... after.
Thanks.
Woah, woah, no, no, that’s that’s not appropriate.
Please.
- Where's the coroner? - He’s dead, at the morgue.
Oh...
So, he wasn't, um...?
Murdered?! No.
Torn rectum, he died almost instantly.
Did anyone know the deceased?
He... came to the stand earlier.
Anything you remember? Anything strange or unusual?
He didn't donate six cents to charity.
The cancer jar?
Take him away, Patty. Thank you.
Pandemonium at the movies.
I'm here with Ronald Lodowski, a Vietnam veteran
and long time usher at the Royal Alamo Cinema.
Ron?
How's it feel to be a hero again?
It's just another Saturday night at the movies, miss.
Hi folks.
We sincerely apologize for the projection malfunction
that occurred tonight in
the last act of “The Bad Bloke on Bedford Avenue.”
Unfortunately this evening's showing of “Schindler's List: Refueled”
has been cancelled while we fix our projector.
What we witnessed today
is the last breath of an Albany staple.
Undoubtedly, the good people of this town will be in mourning
for the great loss of community,
for the great loss of a timeless landmark.
Please make you get your tickets
for “Taft the Musical” at 9 p.m.
For News10 ABC
I'm Linda Chung signing off from Albany.
The summer leaves are turning brown
They're hanging loose on every limb
And pretty soon they'll flutter down
The summer sun is growing dim
And now you know the thoughts I own
They're all that keep me feeling fine
But every longing's for my home
And it's my home that's on my mind
See you later, I'm gone
The time has come and I must be leaving
See you later... see you later
See you later, I'm gone
Hello again.
Valued customers of the Royal Alamo.
As all of you know by now.
This is the end.
I can't express, though,
how much it’s meant to me, seeing you all at our theater every day.
It's something I will miss dearly.
And I know it would have meant the world to my dad.
Thank you.
From the bottom of my heart and from the entire staff
of the Royal Alamo Cinema for choosing our theater.
The best place to watch a movie.
What would you have me do, Sherman?
This can be a day Americans all
around the country will remember.
All you need to do is make the right decision.
This can be a day of victory.
The situation at the border... is grave and growing.
But if you sign this bill, sir, you can save the American people.
But only you, that power rests in your hands.
You can do it, sir.
I weep for this nation,
Vice President Sherman, I do,
but how can such a burden be placed on a man like me?
Look at you.
You wanted the pomp and the circumstance. You wanted the applause.
Come on Mr. President! You are sitting in the chair.
They're out there, waiting for a decision.
Make the damn call, sir!
I cannot see the future.
My mind is restless.
Turmoil is in my bones.
In 1,000 years when the history books are written,
what will they say about William Howard Taft?
They will say he was an honest man,
a decent man, a good man.
Please... don't do it, Mr. President.
Silence help!
You dare interrupt the private communication
between two elected officials?!
Murders, rapes on the rise...
congested tenement buildings resided by, in the majority,
Mexican immigrants prone to violence!
You!
What is your name servant?
Pedro, sir.
What does it matter what his name is?
I have my wife and children still stuck in Mexico.
They are not violent thugs.
They can read... and write!
They want to come to this country and be
decent and hardworking citizens.
Please, sir! Veto the bill!
Sign the bill, Taft.
I'm afraid Pedro is right.
You're a blubbering fool, Taft.
Your legacy will be one of excess and stupidity.
- He must sign! - Now gentlemen,
I know you’re scared, I’ve left you feeling unprepared
The presidency is not the joke you have made it William!
But this is something I must do...
- lest our nation be impaired? - He must step down at once!
I’ve seen the way our country falls apart at the seams.
- It's been a hundred years since - It’s not what it seems!
- Washington and where are we? - It’s not what it seems!
Lost, in this fog of indecision.
And I'm tired of being kicked around!
I believe in Taft.
What?
Yo creo en Taft!
I believe, I believe! You can do it!
I can sing!
I am the president of these United States.
A buster of trusts.
But sadly, my heart has been busted.
And the men all around me not trusted.
Oh, now shall I serve the men who scorn me?
Do I dare ask how?
No!
I am president now.
He is president now!
I was born in Cincinnati.
- Became a Supreme Court Justice. - Let’s not forget the facts,
Taft created income tax!
I’m a man of the law,
but a broken man inside
who am I?!
I believe in Taft, he’s a strong man.
He's a good man.
He will dream like no one ever dared.
Who are we, if we don’t fight for all, big or small?
Now gentlemen,
no reason to be scared.
To the liars, and the naysayers,
to the ones who bend their brow.
To the ones who judge the field when they have never held the plow!
- I will not bow! - He will not bow!
He can do it, I believe in our president!
I... am president!
My name is William Howard Taft.
I weigh 354 pounds,
and I will veto this bill.
- Now! - He’s our president, now!
William Howard Taft!
And now, folks, it’s time to
say goodnight.
We sincerely appreciate your patronage and hope
we've succeeded in bringing you an enjoyable evening of entertainment.
Please drive home carefully and come back again soon.
Goodnight!
Night, Ron.
Goodnight.
So that's that, huh?
I guess so.
And what's next for “the distinguished Lorenzo Parker”?
Who knows, but, uh... “fuck it” right?
You know, I've um...
I've been thinking...
about what you were talking about earlier.
- About it all being for nothing. - Dee, I...
And...
And I...
I think you're right.
You know who's ever gonna know we were here?
You know who's even going to remember this place?
In a year's time from now,
we're going to come back here, and the walls will be painted over gray,
and... the sign’ll be torn down,
and there'll be a strip mall or an indoor trampoline park,
or something but...
when we step back inside, we’ll always know.
We'll never forget that
for a moment in time...
we were here.
Yeah.
We were.
Don't be a stranger.
Thanks, babe.
Alright, alright, boss,
we're packing up.
No need for any harsh sentiments.
Yo, what's with you, man?
I already told you, we're not homeless.
I wanna buy a CD.
- You... You wanna... - I want to buy a CD.
Dragon cocks.
Good name.
Hey.
Sorry about that.
What?
You remember that time Ron found all that cum in Aisle G?
Yeah...
yeah, we had to scoop it up with popcorn bags.
It was like the aftermath of Pompeii.
- Except, you know... - Cum, not lava.
Right, yeah.
You know,
when I first got here,
this was everything I ever wanted.
Working at a movie theater. Shit.
Sign me up.
I was like a kid in a candy store.
Like um... that movie
with Johnny Depp where he plays the creepy pedophile...
what’s that one?
Willy Wonka.
Yeah, Willy Wonka.
This place was everything to me, man.
It was magical.
Took pride in it.
And I knew what I was doing.
But uh,
I have this small thought just...
gnawing at the back of my mind.
Maybe I'm meant for something better.
But nothing ever happens.
But, um...
just now...
as I was sitting in this theater alone, I...
I realized something.
Yesterday’s gone.
There's no going back.
And tomorrow is yet to come.
So... what happens next?
We've come a long way since we last shook hands
Still got a long way to go
We couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
Couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow
What did you do with your burden and your cross
Did you carry it yourself or did you crack?
You and I know that a burden and a cross can only be carried on
one man's back
All my life I wanted to roam
To go to the ends of the Earth
But the earth really ends where you started to roam
You and I know what a circle is worth
Let’s drink a cup to what went down
There's not much left to reveal
I think I changed my mind after what when down
As to who in the end got the better deal
Give me your hand for the parting touch
Fare thee well and thanks a lot
I know that we promised we would keep in touch
But you and I know that we both forgot
We've come a long way since we last shook hands
Still got a long way to go
We couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
Couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow
We've come a long way since we last shook hands
Sill got a long way to go
Couldn't see the flowers when we last shook hands
Couldn't see the flowers on account of the snow
You're a blubbering fool, Taft.
Your legacy will be one of excess and stupidity.
- He must sign! - Now gentlemen,
I know you’re scared, I’ve left you feeling unprepared
The presidency is not the joke you have made it William!
But this is something I must do...
- lest our nation be impaired? - He must step down at once!
I’ve seen the way our country falls apart at the seams.
- It's been a hundred years since - It’s not what it seems!
- Washington and where are we? - It’s not what it seems!
TAFT Lost, in this fog of indecision.
And I'm tired of being kicked around!
SERVANT I believe in Taft.
What?
PEDRO Yo creo en Taft!
SERVANTS I believe, I believe! You can do it!
TAFT I can sing!
I am the president of these United States.
SERVANT A buster of trusts.
TAFT But sadly, my heart has been busted.
And the men all around me not trusted.
Oh, now shall I serve the men who scorn me?
Do I dare ask how?
SERVANTS No!
TAFT I am president now.
SERVANTS He is president now!
TAFT I was born in Cincinnati.
- Became a Supreme Court Justice. - Let’s not forget the facts,
SERVANT Taft created income tax!
TAFT I’m a man of the law,
but a broken man inside
who am I?!
SERVANTS I believe in Taft, he’s a strong man.
He's a good man.
He will dream like no one ever dared.
Who are we, if we don’t fight for all, big or small?
TAFT Now gentlemen,
no reason to be scared.
SERVANTS William Howard Taft!
I’m just a cold hearted killer.
Not to me.
