Original subtitles

Nobunaga distributed a decree within Azuchi.

This decree reflects Nobunaga's thoughts on political policies.

He exempted taxes on sales in markets.

Merchants must travel through the town and not the highway...

and spend the night at an inn.

Labor service was waived.

New and old residents were treated alike.

Arguments and dishonest trade were prohibited.

Even if Nobunaga's other domains had other laws,

they did not apply in the town of Azuchi.

Nobunaga assured residents of freedom and safety,

and promoted the deveolpment of commerce.

Nobunaga wanted Azuchi to become the largest city.

The little markets were not his invention,

nor were battles with muskets, or class distinctions.

However, it was Nobunaga who used them efficiently for his own purposes.

Except for the Mori to the west,

Nobunaga demolished all those who sided with Ishiyama Hongwanji.

Now Ishiyama Hongwanji was isolated.

1580

Nobunaga disliked battles...

and sent an Imperial envoy to Ishiyama Hongwanji to urge them to reconcile.

He didn't see any value in further fighting.

Things will finally settle down with Hongwanji.

At first Hongwanji Kennyo wanted to reconcile as is,

but since Your Majesty demanded that he leave the premises,

he agreed and promised to offer hostages.

People who escaped from Hongwanji say no food is available within,

and because they will not be getting help,

the men have lost all will to fight.

This suggestion for reconciliation is indeed foresight on Your Majesty's part.

Leaders must avoid futile battles.

Men worship me now.

I need to set an example.

They need to respect me.

You are right.

Rather than killing the priests,

it is better to display their pitiful guises.

Then people will see they are worthless.

Now the shogun needs support from the Mori.

Nobody will stand behind Kennyo.

Poor souls.

It is as you say.

With Hongwanji gone, no one dares to challenge you.

Our army exceeds 150,000 men.

That's right, isn't it?

By the way, Your Majesty...

About Sir Hayashi being removed as retainer...

He was removed by me.

Has he done something wrong?

Exactly. Something grave.

Hongwanji should be guarded carefully now.

Until Kennyo leaves Hongwanji, don't take your eyes off him.

Also Sakuma, you said our army exceeds 150,000.

But it's not yours. It's Oda Nobunaga's.

Don't forget that!

Father. We can't reconcile with Nobunaga!

It's in name only. Aren't we actually giving in?

I've given this deep thought.

Don't you care if the Ikko Sect perishes?!

That's not it!

You must have seen the disciples' sufferings.

They have lost all will to fight.

But, Father...

If we continue, they will die uselessly.

They are starving and can't even chant.

How can they pick up arms and fight?

Without true faith in our beliefs,

how can they go to heaven?

We can only pursue a nation of the Ikko Sect if we remain alive.

Our religion is not only about dying.

Even if you leave Father, I will remain.

After his father Kennyo left the temple in Hongwanji,

his son remained for several more months...

and attempted to fight without men to support him.

But, eventually he also left the temple.

That night a fire started and the Hongwanji temple burned...

until the next morning, leaving nothing behind.

Nobunaga's long-time enemy, Ishiyama Hongwanji, now disappeared.

Your Majesty, heartiest congratulations on your accomplishments.

We suffered many years because of the Ikko Sect,

but Your Majesty's army destroyed them...

and the Hongwanji temple was burned to the ground.

Congratulations.

To celebrate this occasion, I Sakuma Nobumori,

would like you to see an unusual item.

Someone... Call Tori and Pedro.

They are both here.

The two of you, come closer.

Your Majesty, this man comes from an island further west from Europe...

and his name is Pedro.

He is now staying at the Christian church.

This woman is Tori, the best flute player.

The unusual item is this flute.

This flute is from Pedro's country and is held vertically.

I have learned a tune to please Your Majesty.

Then, I will play this along with the Japanese flute.

Are you ready?

Yes.

Then...

I'm expelling Sakuma.

He was learning to play the flute when he should have been fighting.

Sakuma was Chief Commander of the battle with Hongwanji.

During the five years, he stayed at the fort at Tennoji...

and never aggressively attacked the temple.

What has he done these past five years?

He hasn't done anything!

Or, is learning to play the flute commendable?

Look at Akechi. He stabilized Tango and Tanba.

Look at Hideyoshi. He stabilized Harima.

Echizen is being watched over closely by Shibata.

Sakuma caused many deaths at the Battle of Mikata-ga-hara...

and he alone escaped.

He will be expelled together with Hayashi...

and thrown into Mt. Koya!

Nobutada.

If you have something to say, say it.

No... Well...

Fool! How can you have nothing to say?!

You are the head of the Oda clan.

If I should die today, what will you do?

Having a good nature will not keep you alive!

Yah, I don't understand it.

But, there must be some reason for Sir Hayashi's demotion.

I heard Hayashi voiced his opinion about Sokenji.

Hayashi has done that before, but was never reprimanded.

While we were invading Hongwanji, perhaps His Majesty has changed.

He would never have suggested praying to him before.

Why does he do this?

Men always strive higher.

I recommend that you keep that to yourself.

You're right. I'm already on His Majesty's blacklist.

I didn't mean that.

I can tell by the way he speaks to me.

He may have changed.

The only ones who haven't are them.

Akechi Mitsuhide...

Get angry. You're holding back.

You joined the Oda army mid-way and feel inferior.

Get angry at my rudeness!

You're not being rude.

I am honored to drink alongside with you.

That's just what I mean.

Without getting angry or getting drunk,

how can we really open up to one another?

Forgive me. Have a drink.

Or, are you taking me lightly?

No.

I heard you are connected to the shogun...

and are close to the nobility and write poems with them.

Just a little.

So you can't get along with a country bumpkin?

No, that's not true.

Let's fight on record alone.

The one who dies first loses.

Then I'll win.

Even if you are more successful, I will never die.

I was born persistent.

Hideyoshi...

Loud laughs call the Death God.

What have you been discussing with His Majesty?

Sit here and have a drink.

Sir Sakuma, His Majesty wishes to see you.

Is that so? Is he reprimanding me again?

Sir Niwa... Is it time to invade the Mori?

I will be glad to take that on.

Don't be absurd!

What do you mean by that?!

You bastard!

How dare you! Get outside!

Hideyoshi, behave. Ikeda, sit down.

This is no time to be fighting.

I will make an announcement.

Sir Hayashi and Sir Sakuma, the two of them,

will be expelled from the Oda.

What wrong have they committed?

It's for not understanding His Majesty.

Everyone must be on guard.

Yesterday and today are two different days.

His Majesty is now the deity of Sokenji.

He is the guardian god of the Oda army.

Be sure not to insult him.

Hideyoshi...

Be on your best behavior.

I beg you.

We ask you to please come down. Please.

We beg you.

What is it?

His Majesty will soon return from Kyoto.

So please, come down.

It's okay.

Ranmaru... Bomaru...

You have nice faces. Very adorable.

Now go.

You cannot come to this floor without His Majesty's approval.

Who knows what punishment you will be given?

Please... Please, please, come down.

We beg of you!

Then tell His Majesty of my behavior.

We would never do that.

If you lie, then we will all be beheaded.

Don't worry. Just say you didn't see me.

This view is beautiful.

Oichi...

Mother. The water is a different hue today.

Take a look.

Go down and wait downstairs.

Now, go down.

I'll remain here.

Nobunaga will be upset. Now go down.

That's why I'm up here. Its fun, isn't it?

Your willfulness will cost them their lives.

Nobunaga will behead them for allowing you up here.

Mother, you are afraid of my brother.

Just go down. Nobunaga will be back soon.

I want to greet him from here.

You can't.

Because you fear Brother's retaliation?

Why would I fear my own son?

Then, burn down that Sokenji Temple.

How could he proclaim himself God...

and issue a decree for people to worship him?

His Majesty is like God himself.

What about him is like God?

He fights cruel battles, burns down Mt. Hiei,

and chases out the shogun.

It's for the cause of justice.

Our nation is peaceful today,

and this beautiful castle stands all on His Majesty's account.

Justice prevailed.

Who else should we worship?

His Majesty is worthy to be God.

What about Brother is like God?

Brother was known as a fool as a child.

You must have caught that from him.

I forbid you to speak ill of His Majesty!

Stop, both of you!

Nobunaga is neither a fool nor God!

Welcome back.

Why are you sitting here?

Today, please, I have something to say.

Later.

Yes.

Lady Rui...

Oh, Lady Rui...

Why are you here?

Yes.

We already greeted His Majesty.

Yes, I know that.

He can't return to his room. Take him back.

No, don't worry, Lady Rui.

I can go alone.

When you get old, be more accepting.

I can do it alone!

Help him.

Even men of God age.

Please forgive me for my pitiful appearance.

You were injured. It can't be helped.

Now what is it you wanted to say?

I am a bit hesitant dressed like this...

but, it's about Sokenji.

I expelled Hayashi and Sakuma because of it.

Please don't proclaim yourself God.

It seems like you have aged, too.

You would have changed your form to attack me.

The thought is the same.

Then, see through my heart.

I bet you can't.

I can.

You have the country in your palms and have defeated all existing foes.

There is nothing more to fear.

The only thing may be your death.

Your smallness...

We all die, even if we are leaders, or have stabilized the whole nation.

As if yesterday was all a lie, we die one day.

Even you cannot avoid that day.

So you proclaimed yourself to be God for eternal life.

You also seek to gain the people's respect.

You burned Mt. Hiei, killed the Buddhist monks,

and ended the reign of the shogun.

Somewhere deep down in your heart, you feel guilty.

The people have not forgotten that either.

As the sovereign leader,

you want to erase that to gain the respect of the people.

That is what Your Majesty still lacks today.

I never once wanted the people's respect.

I don't need that.

I spoke knowing this might make you angry.

Please behead me.

Then, I will do as you wish.

Thank you for keeping me at your side for many years.

Dying by your sword is my greatest happiness.

How I longed for this day to come.

Zuiten...

Hurry! Please slay me!

I have only you.

You have stood beside me since my youth.

You manipulated, intimidated, lied, and betrayed me.

My late father said I should trust only you.

I don't trust you now, but you are close to me.

There is no one closer to me than you.

How strange it is.

Forgive me.

Rest assured. The truth is I never wanted to be God.

I don't trust you, but let me explain.

I don't have anyone else to tell.

If I tell Nobutada, he will grow soft.

Mother is out of the question.

I learned something from the Ikko battles.

It was that they did not fear death.

And, their numbers were enormous.

It wasn't only the Ikko Sect, but the Hokke Sects, too.

They gather at the foot of the Buddha.

Take a look at Sakai.

The bustle of that town is something else.

They come to make a profit.

Christians are also the same.

Bateren says that in Europe there are 1 million of them.

Men want to be saved and want to make money.

I want Azuchi to be a bigger town than Sakai,

the biggest town in the country.

It will be new and big, the opposite of the old Kyoto.

Someday, there will be no battles in Japan.

Because I will see to that.

And, someday I will depart from this world.

My goal is to assure the Oda future.

What is the basis of creating a town?

People...

Without people, the town won't prosper.

I brought merchants in with incentives.

I built roads and bridges.

To gather more people, I built Sokenji Temple.

As its deity, I will attract crowds.

Every year on May 12,

all my domains must pay tribute to me and come to Azuchi.

I can force people to come here now.

At first I will force them,

but have them experience the beauty and abundance of Azuchi.

People will gather here on their own later.

Becoming a God is all for the nation.

With my power, I will build a new city.

Christians will be provided some land,

so they can build their own church.

This new city needs a new look.

After ten years, it will be a city you've never seen before.

Perhaps it will be the new capital.

I am humbled.

This is just between us.

Yes.

In the spring of 1581, I took Inspector Priest Valegnani to Kyoto...

and met again with Nobunaga.

It's been awhile, hasn't it?

Yes, it has been awhile. Thank you for seeing us today.

It makes me happy to see you.

Feel at home.

This man came from Europe to see Japan's Christians.

He is Father Alexander Valegnani.

You have come a long way.

He says he is honored to be in your presence.

He wishes to thank you for your many years of kindness.

By the way, who is that dark fellow there?

Pardon me, his name is Sotello.

He comes from south of Europe.

Is his skin color his?

Yes, he said he was born this way.

Oh, there are other skin shades, too.

This is my first encounter.

Yes.

I've seen this before. What is it for?

This is the shape of the world.

That's right, I've heard this before.

But, that statement seems strange.

In Japan we believe the world is flat...

and the sea stretches far into every direction.

What evidence do you use to say its round?

A European sailed west by ship, crossed the sea,

and came back to where he started.

Went all around?

Yes.

Is that true?

Yes, it's true.

I see...

If the world is round, that would be possible.

Yes.

How odd...

Where is Japan?

It is here.

Then, it we sailed west from Japan, past Europe,

will we return to Japan again?

Yes, after a trip around the world you would return to Japan.

It's hard to believe.

Then where is heaven and earth?

That's right. We believe Buddha land is in the West.

If we go eastward by ship, we see Europe, Asia, India,

and then back to Japan?

Yes, that is right.

There is no east or west in this world.

This world is round...

We were not officially informed that the world was round.

We only knew much later that the Copernican Theory had already been announced.

So everybody, until next time...

To be continued.

To be continued.
