Marriage was definitely not what I thought it would be.

The victim's body was found here.

She actually looked a lot like Bonnie.

I was afraid of leaving the house

and I really shouldn't been afraid of being home.

It's a midshipman's knot and of course

Marc Evonitz's Navy.

A lot of these things are lining up for me.

He said a young girl like you shouldn't be

taking rides with strangers.

I thought I'm in trouble.

25-year-old Alicia Reynolds has been missing for over a week.

Over 20 women have been approached by a man along

Route 29 in recent months.

Investigators believe Alicia's disappearance may be connected.

Alicia, we love you. We hope you're not suffering.

We want you back.

This is a picture of Alicia and I, and it's just a picture

I've always loved.

It's just me sitting beside her with my arm around her.

Alicia was my twin sister,

but she never let me forget that she was born first

and I was born second.

We shared a car, we shared friends,

we shared classes, we competed with each

other academically.

The other picture is one of Alicia and I with our sister,

younger sister Barbara, during one of our family trips

to Williamsburg, Virginia.

Barbara was five years younger than we were.

The sister that was kind of annoying.

Who knows why I have that smirk on my face?

I would love to know.

This picture is in my brother's house in Nashville,

when he was in medical school.

Alicia wanted to introduce us to her new boyfriend.

He was super nervous to meet his girlfriend's twin brother.

And he was very, very anxious.

They got married on New Year's Eve, 1994.

And that was a highlight for our family.

But, um, yeah.

I think, you know, like--

You always imagined... God, um--

what life was going to be

growing up. Of course, it never happened.

The body of a young woman has been found.

Virginia State Police have confirmed that the body found

in Culpeper County is that of Alicia Reynolds.

The alleged Route 29 stalker has become the Route 29 killer.

As long as you both shall live.

On March 2nd of 1996, it's a Saturday, Alicia is

driving from where she lived in Baltimore

down US-29 into Charlottesville.

What we think happened

is that at some point she was stopped by a guy who probably

convinced her that something was wrong with her car.

And at some point she got in his truck.

And that's the last anyone saw her alive.

The body of a young woman has been found near Culpeper.

The body has been identified

as 25-year-old Alicia Showalter Reynolds,

who disappeared near Route 29.

My mom and dad had lost their daughter.

I lost my sister.

It was hard.

Investigators have been flooded with tips and calls

from the public since Alicia was found.

Hopefully we'll make an arrest soon.

There were still lots of questions.

Who did it? Why did they do it?

You know, after 30 years...

I, uh...

It'd be nice to have some resolution.

I just want people to know that this is a solvable crime.

Someone out there knows something.

They may not realize that they know it,

but they know something.

Patrick and Barbara hope that by sharing their story

and their memories of Alicia, that there will be a renewed

interest and possibly some more information that could help

them to have some answers as to what happened to their sister.

Currently, we're at the exact location

where Alicia's car was found.

And a few things were found here

after Alicia went missing.

One of those things was a pair of black gloves.

And we also know that there were cigarette butts.

They were similar to these.

This is actually a photo taken from Marc's apartment.

And we know that a similar style cigarette butt was

found here.

Going over all of the details

of where Alicia's car was found,

that gave me a little more motivation and drive to look

a little bit deeper and say,

"Could Marc be involved in this?"

I think he could.

It's only in hindsight, looking at cases and having

conversations with you, we might unlock a memory that

could be very critical to

us trying to put together these pieces.

And so in regards to Alicia Showalter Reynolds,

we know that on the day Alicia was last seen,

it's a Saturday morning, Marc's timesheet

said he worked. What do you think about that?

To my knowledge and my recollections,

he did not work on Saturdays.

One of the other things that potentially ties him to Alicia

was a black glove.

So I have one of your photos here.

Yeah, I came across this picture.

And this was taken probably in 1995.

But the interesting thing is these were the gloves he was

wearing that he lost.

You remember the timeframe?

I remember in April of 1996, there was just like a freak

snowstorm, and he had to go and buy a new pair of gloves

because he couldn't find his gloves.

- These gloves? - These gloves.

Date-wise, I think that that's significant.

This pair of black gloves that Marc lost around the time of

Alicia's death is just another

coincidence that I can't ignore.

I have the opportunity to talk with Adrienne Isom Malin,

one of the most incisive criminal profilers

in the country.

This is the general area where Alicia was found.

Not a lot of details have been released to the public.

The little bit of information that we do have is that she was

found in more or less a shallow depression, covered with

leaves, twigs, and the cause of death was most

likely asphyxiation.

What strikes me about this location is the remote

nature of it. - Right.

To be out this far,

you would really need to know this existed.

And so the person who put Alicia here is

familiar with this area.

It does bring us to Marc Evonitz.

Yeah.

And we have up here on Route 29 where Alicia disappeared.

And then you have right here where she was found.

This is only about a 10-minute drive.

Yeah, right.

And then you have over here Marc and Bonnie's house.

And something that we know from conversations with Bonnie is

that she and Marc would drive around these back roads.

We've actually seen notes.

This one specifically puts Marc in the Culpeper area.

All of these notes just tell me he's hunting.

And where Alicia's car was found,

there was a black glove and there were cigarette butts.

OK.

Marc had a pair of black gloves that he lost around

that time.

And similar type cigarette butts were found

in his apartment. - In terms of

MO, it really does fit with what we've seen in

the other cases.

The trolling for victims and hunting.

The familiarity with this area.

This disposal location.

Those things can't be ignored.

And hopefully, speaking out about this, a tip will come in.

The family will eventually get closure because we all want

justice for Alicia and her family.

It always felt kind of creepy here to me.

There was so much going on.

Girls disappearing and being murdered.

We were all watching the news, taking precautions as we were

out and about and keeping our eyes open.

The more conversations I have

with people in this area who had

experiences with who they believe was Marc,

it makes me think that there was definitely some

unaccounted-for criminal behavior.

Yeah, I mean, it makes me think of...

when I was working as a hairstylist here,

at one point I had a framed photo of him on my station.

And I remember on more than one occasion,

clients saying, "Why does he look so familiar?

I swear I've seen him at the soccer games."

It really does make me wonder if he was like sitting at kids'

soccer games, you know, stalking.

Everything stands out in hindsight.

Yeah.

You have any leads or any cases that you think I specifically

should be looking at or looking for during that time,

please, please, please reach out to me.

OK, I have just gotten some emails and some messages that

could possibly blow this case wide open.

So, tell me a little bit about what you experienced.

- How old were you? - I was 15.

Wow.

That day, I got off the bus.

I saw this car approaching slowly.

And my house was in five acres in the woods off the road,

so it's nobody around.

He keeps on creeping and creeping.

And I was like, "This is weird."

Rolls down his window and has a big, huge, like fold-out map.

And he points to it and it's like, "Hey, can you help me?

I'm lost."

My immediate reaction was,

"if you have a map, you're not lost, buddy."

Run.

And I ran as fast as I could.

Is this the person that was behind the car?

Yeah, that's definitely the person.

Could you share what happened in September of 1996 to you?

Absolutely.

So I left to work probably a few minutes before nine.

A car pulled up and he said,

"Hey, you have a flat tire.

Go into the gas station and I'll help you change it."

I stared at him for a while, got a really good look,

and then all of a sudden, I just had this thought in my

head saying he's being too nice, something's not right.

And I just felt overcome with dread.

I thought to myself, you have seconds to decide what

to do, and I kept driving.

And I took a quick right, and then he was behind me.

When I slowed down, he slowed down.

If I sped up, he sped up.

At that point, I hit a stoplight and he was beside

me and I could kind of see him staring at me.

I just thought, "Don't look at him."

I looked to the right and there's a police car

sitting right there and there's a female officer in there.

He started to back up and he turned around and I started

screaming at her and I was like, "He's getting away,

he's going to hurt somebody. I know he is."

I actually have photos if you'd like to take a look,

see if that's the person that you remember.

Yeah, that's him.

- No doubt? - No doubt.

It almost makes him look human,

but he's a monster.

And this was September 7th, 1996, right?

Yes, that Saturday.

Two days later, Sofia Silva goes missing.

Investigators and the local community have been searching

for 16-year-old Sofia Silva,

who disappeared from her home on Monday.

So far, the search teams have failed to turn up any clues.

For everyone involved, fear and anxiety is growing.

How can a girl be taken off her front porch and nobody

see anything?

It's scary.

On September 9th, 1996, Sofia Silva went outside to

work on her homework.

That was the last time anyone saw Sofia alive.

We know that on September 7th,

Bonnie goes on a trip to San Diego.

She's gone for a week.

Marc utilizes this as an opportunity to take Sofia.

We know that Marc was the person that was responsible

for the homicide of Sofia Silva.

But leading up to the disappearance of Sofia,

we're coming off of the Route 29 stalkings

and the homicide of Alicia.

Tell me about what it was like to live and to work in

this area?

The feeling, especially being an investigator,

and during that time, it knocks the wind out of you.

Because we didn't have any answers.

- We didn't have a clue. - Yeah.

Just broad daylight, she's gone.

- It's terrifying. - It is terrifying.

- It's a nightmare. - It is.

During the course of the investigation,

investigators were very specifically

looking for a red car.

Witnesses stated there was a red car with a rounded roof

that was seen around the time that she went missing.

At the time, Marc and Bonnie actually owned

a red Volkswagen Bug.

- My name is Keith Raba. - My name is Monica Raba.

Marc and Bonnie were our first neighbors.

He was very talkative.

Unassuming, friendly.

He did fit in.

Nothing stood out that he had any secrets.

But there was the day that he sped into his garage.

Marc comes speeding down the street, music playing

really loud. There were kids playing.

And when he came down,

he pulled into his garage and shut the door.

Marc never parked his car in his garage.

It was always trash bags and stuff in the garage.

So I went over to the house, and I knocked on the door.

He opens up the door, and he's standing right here.

And he goes, "I'm sorry, Keith, I can't talk to

you right now." And he slammed the door on me.

I took that as, "OK, we'll talk later."

I never thought anything more of it at that time.

I know it's cliché, hindsight being 20/20,

but we assume that he may have had the Silva girl

right next door. We had no clue.

Just a week after Sofia was kidnapped,

on September 17th of 1996,

we know that Marc abruptly decides he wants to

trade in the VW Bug.

With hindsight, it's clear that Marc's

movements line up perfectly with the crime.

I came home from my trip to San Diego.

He was late picking me up, and he was really

agitated and irritable.

The offender's behavior will have changed.

These behavioral changes will have been noticed by people

close to him during these times.

He just looked kind of banged up, and he said he had been

working out in the yard and, you know, just didn't have

time to clean up beforehand.

The offender has a secure place to bring his victims.

The shower curtain was gone, and I think even the rug.

And he said that he had fallen and pulled the shower

curtain down.

Looking back, I realized that he had lied to me and that

he had abducted Sofia Silva.

He must have had her here and

had a struggle with her.

I hate thinking about all of the things that happened

here in this house.

The search for Sofia Silva came to a tragic end today as

a body was found in a nearby creek.

The authorities believe the body had been there for

some time.

Silva's death has been ruled a homicide.

The FBI will join county police in the hunt for the killer.

Sofia's found October 14th.

She was identified by her dental records and her

purple fingernail polish.

That Halloween, so we're talking a couple weeks after

he has murdered Sofia, Marc's Halloween costume is

the Grim Reaper.

To me, that demonstrates his narcissistic tendency to

say, "Look at me, I'm so smart that I could dress up as

"the Grim Reaper and no one will

have any idea that I could be involved."

By November, everything started to unravel.

It was the day before Thanksgiving,

and...

we were sitting here in the living room.

There was something that I said that triggered him,

and he, like, jumps up,

and he had his keys in his hand for whatever reason,

and he just threw the keys.

And that busted the vase.

He asked me if I still love him and I said,

"Yeah, I still, I still love you."

And he said, "But you're not in love with me."

And I couldn't honestly say

yes, and so I didn't say anything.

He was just very kind of catatonic.

And as I walked by him, he opened his eyes and

he's like, "I hate you."

It was shocking, but I just kept

walking and like I walked up the stairs

to go to my bedroom,

get my bag and get out of here.

I came in the bedroom,

and he came to the bottom of the stairs, and he's yelling at

me, "If you leave, I'm going to take the gun, and I'm going to

blow my head off, and it's all going to be your fault."

I heard a voice in my head that said, "Get the gun."

And I got into the side table, took the gun,

and I stuck it in my bag.

And so then I started down the stairs

and he started up the stairs.

As I get to the bottom, I hear the drawer open and slam shut.

And so he knew that I had the gun.

I could hear him coming down the stairs.

So at this point, I was really hurrying to get out the door.

He followed me outside and he was yelling at me, "Just give me

the gun, come back home, don't leave like this."

I got away, and then the next thing I know

he's coming after me.

So, I'm running down the street and I'm going into people's

driveways and kind of ducking behind cars.

And that moment, I knew I was done.

I packed up

everything that would fit in my car,

and I went to California to be with my family.

Tonight, a frantic search is underway for two missing

Spotsylvania sisters.

12-year-old Kati and 15-year-old Kristin Lisk

were last seen returning from school.

We're just worried to death and right on the heels of this

awful Sofia Silva tragedy.

Sofia goes missing, fall of 96, spring of 97, two more

girls go missing from their front yard.

How quickly

does law enforcement say, "Oh, wow,

we might have something more serious on our hands?"

Very quickly.

The horrible thought of there possibly being a serial killer

in Spotsylvania, it rocked the whole community.

It was-- it was devastating.

The bodies of two girls have been found.

They have been tentatively identified as missing sisters

Kati and Kristin Lisk.

The bodies were both found

beneath an overpass in the South Anna River.

The day that the girls were discovered, yeah, it was...

It was tough.

And those emotions, I can't say, really go away.

I felt guilt.

It's like, what did we miss?

What did we miss

that we didn't catch this guy?

You sit and you second-guess.

Did we cover every basis? This guy was living right here.

I know we did everything in my heart.

- I know we did everything. - Yeah.

But still, you know, it's like,

now you've had to go through this.

Where does it end? Where does it stop?

I just wanted to let Kara know that basically I was sorry.

At the end of the day, he was the person that could

have changed something.

And there's nothing else you can do.

Yeah.

A case like this will stay engraved in your mind.

I know, I still see things that I wish I could unsee.

FBI analysis confirmed

that the same person is responsible

for the murders of Sofia Silva, Kristin and Kati Lisk.

Spotsylvania was innocent.

Marc Evonitz took away a lot of that innocence.

On the anniversary of Sofia Silva's death,

the police still have no suspects in the case.

They investigate

thousands of leads.

The investigation into the murders of three Virginia

girls is larger than ever.

Authorities continue to hunt for answers in the case.

They never stop investigating, pulling in leads, but they have

no idea what happened until 2002,

when I escaped from him.

And investigators connect Marc to the deaths here in Virginia.

So, this is Marc and Bonnie's house.

Yep.

This is the place where a lot of things happened and a lot of

evidence ties all of the homicides together.

Oh, wow.

So heading upstairs,

this room looks like it would have been the master.

Wow.

Knowing what I know about Marc and what happened to me,

this is most probably where the girls were

quite a bit. - Yeah.

This room is where we had fibers from all three

of the girls.

And actually, one of the pieces of evidence tied all three of

the Virginia homicides to me.

The furry handcuffs

that we know were used on all three of the girls.

And then this would have been master bathroom.

And we know

some of the victims had fresh water in their lungs.

So I think that it's very likely

that these walls and these two rooms

saw the vast majority

of the crime that was committed here.

When I view this space,

I see myself

and the girls, and I wonder,

were they trying to find ways to escape?

Were they trying to see if there was anyone out

these windows?

Knowing the families and having some idea of what

all of the girls were like,

I imagine a lot of their thoughts were on

mom and dad.

Yeah.

For me, that was certainly a big part of my

thought process.

I wanted my parents to not worry.

I wanted to go home.

- Hmm. - You good?

- Yeah. - Yeah?

- Yeah-- I am. - Are you?

Yeah. I'm OK.

- OK. - It's just...

- It's a lot. - It is.

To have seen photos from the crime scene and then to be

in those locations,

I don't even have words for what I'm feeling.

Makes me wonder, would this have been my fate?

Would I've been in one of those rivers?

I didn't know if you'd want to talk to me.

I just felt the need to say to you that

I was so glad that you took him down.

But you played a big part in that.

Don't undercut your part in that.

I want to hear from you about

when you found out what Marc had done.

My sister had called me to tell me that he had

kidnapped you.

You had gotten away and now he's on the run.

And I thought, "No way, I'm going to call him."

So I called him and he answered.

I said, "They said that you did this, did you do this?"

- And he said... - Yes.

Just yes.

I could not even fathom the word yes.

That he said, "Yes."

And so then I started crying and I said,

"Have you done this before?"

- And he said, "Yes." - Wow.

I was just bombarding him with questions.

- And he said, - "I will answer all

"your questions. I'm going to be in Florida.

I need you to meet me at this IHOP."

My mind was a frenzy of emotions.

"What do I do? What do I do?"

I went into a police station and told them what Marc said

he had done and where he was going to be.

The officer said, "Just go home."

And then late that night, I got a knock on the door.

"He's dead."

I can't even begin to comprehend what you were

feeling in that moment. It's still your brother.

So it's complex.

And that's one of the reasons it's interesting to talk to

you, someone who grew up in the same home as him,

and see how that could have shaped him.

Yes.

Was there an incident that

flipped that switch?

We grew up in violence from the beginning.

Our father was abusive with Marc as a child.

Marc told me that when he was four years old, my father tried

to drown him in the bathtub.

That was a terrifying experience for him.

Something that shaped him at a very vulnerable age.

Right.

But obviously, no matter what our father did,

Marc chose to do those terrible things.

Yeah.

I think we can't ignore this big traumatic event

that Marc went through.

We know that he goes into the Navy,

a water-oriented field.

And at least two of his victims were killed in water and then

disposed of in water.

So there is this central theme of water throughout his life.

It's these stories that when we look back, it lays a trail

for who he later becomes.

I can't imagine what you must be feeling,

actually, uncovering the crimes that he's committed,

trying to piece that together.

I can't imagine what that feels like, being in your shoes.

This process impacted me in a way that I didn't expect.

One of the things that I've learned is

it doesn't seem like he ever was put into CODIS.

I just assumed it was done all these years.

CODIS, which is the Combined DNA Indexing System,

is the national database where known offenders

are loaded into so that there can be potential DNA matches.

This is a large way that crimes are solved in our country.

The police did say that they felt like he was

responsible for more, and if they could put his DNA

into the national database, that it would light up like

a Christmas tree. - Wow.

They told me that the reason that they didn't do it was

because at the time of his death, he was not

a convicted felon. - Mm-hmm.

And so there's like that loophole that protects him.

Because Marc was not convicted,

he did not meet the basis of entry into this database.

So his DNA was never entered in there.

This idea that there's not an exception to that rule

is infuriating.

I want to get his DNA in there because

I believe that there will be matches.

I'm working with some of my friends in law enforcement

trying to see if we can

get through legislation and get to the right people

and power, politicians.

Getting him put in the CODIS could be a major step in

aligning him with some of these other crimes

that I think he's responsible for.

This investigation is something that I will be doing

until the end of my life. I'll never stop

searching for answers, and connections, and ties to

what else Marc may have done.

I do want to show you some evidence that was

taken from Marc's trunk.

So I'll let you open that up.

OK, this is a picture of me on my 21st birthday.

It's wild that he still had this.

Flip it over for me and open up the back.

Wow.

This is a picture of me when I was about 11 years old.

My mother had this.

I think he stole the picture.

And then put it in a frame behind another photo of you.

Creepy.

Carried it around with him for years.

- It's insane. - It's crazy, yeah.

It seems to me that

you not only

were a victim of Marc's grooming, but I think it's very

safe to say that you were, for all intents and purposes,

his first victim.

That's mind-blowing.

It's a lot to process.

I mean, it's very disturbing.

I don't think you really can fully process that.

Really, I didn't know what was going on from the very

beginning, but from looking at this picture,

the whole time I knew him,

he was that person.

So, I wrote this poem

about how I was feeling.

It's called "The Secrets I Carry."

"The secrets I carry, they started off light.

"Once young and naive, my vision was bright.

"An innocent child who trusts what she's told,

"never quite knowing how things might unfold.

"The secrets I carry first started off light,

"over the years weighing more than they might.

"The secrets I carry, the story untold,

"had not the love of the story that sold.

"These secrets I carry make more sense with time.

The truth behind the man of the crime."

At the end of the day, we went through difficult

things at the hands of the same man.

But we both have beautiful lives.

And now do activism and education around what it

means to be a survivor.

I'm spending a little bit of time out in the garden today.

Come over here, say hello.

We both have beautiful families.

I've got my babies

and I just got married.

The bad things that happen to you can shape you,

but they don't have to define you.

He didn't break us.
