-Speak English -A little

A little.I like to send a telegram

Thanks,thanks

Perhaps there is something here

It's such a mess,the New Year's Eve

Here it is.Mrs Karin Manelli

You were lucky

Please sign here

-Please -Thanks

I hope you have a Happy New Year

That's right. Happy New Year

Thanks,same for you

At least you are here now, where have you been such a long time?

The shops are so crowded today, Mr Kruger, and I had to wait everywhere

Oh,New Years Eve and I'm already late

Moment,I would like to ask you one thing

Where are my smoking shoes I've looked for them everywhere

They should be in the wardrobe

I couldn't find them,have a look yourself

No,no now

All right,I'll go and have a look

The shoes are really in the wardrobe,Mr Kruger

Really? And I didn't see them,thanks

A telegram,John Milton is coming today

His train arrives at seven o'clock

Please,what time is it?

Four o'clock

What has she written to let him drop everything and come?

Why don't you ask Karin herself?

She can tell you if she wants

Yes,why not,really,why not

I'll go and ask her now

Claude you shouldn't upset yourself, you have a concert this evening

Perhaps I should never have given you the telegram

On the contrary,I'm very grateful for it

Mrs Fraser

Please, tell me,is this not the time for the post for my wife?

-There is nothing -Thanks

Is the book thrilling?

-Yes -More than usual?

Do you know how you look like?

Like somebody waiting for a delayed train, grabbing a book

Nothing good comes from that, as one has no patience to read

One is just waiting

Are you waiting,Karin?

What should I wait for?

Perhaps for an answer

The answer to a letter you have sent

What have you written to John Milton?

Why don't you say something. Invent something

Can't be that difficult for a woman to lie?

Stop!Let me live,I can't stand it any longer

Karin

Why don't you trust me?

Why don't you have the courage to tell me your thoughts?

Claude, stop the theatre,I'm not taking part in that

How can you think of leaving me?

Don't you know how much I need you?

That's too simple,Claude,I can't any more

Karin, there is not even for a moment of my life, a possibility to be without you

Whatever I've said and done, don't go away,Karin

Stay with me

I'll promise you to stop my suspicious behaviour and all the spying

Let us trust each other as we did before

Look

This has arrived for you, which you have been waiting for

Look,I have no fear of showing it to you

Thanks

I don't want to know what you have written him

and I don't want to know what you have planned

I just want to know one thing,Karin, that you'll stay with me,my dear

-Can you promise me that? -Yes,Claude

-You will not see him? -No

You swear!!

Yes

Excuse me,Claude, they have already phoned twice, you have to leave now

I'll come at once, please have the car ready

I'll come back to the house asap after the concert

and the we will celebrate New Year's Eve together

-Yes -Praise God

Well, everything in order? I was afraid of a scene

She'll stay

Perhaps we should careful during the next days

I don't want to make Karin distrustful, let her redeem herself

-And Milton? -She will not see him any more

I must say,Claude,congratulations

What a fool,what an idiot

Ferdl

Ferdl

Hi,Ferdl, wake up,Toni is here and you must take over the taxi

Do you really want to enter,Toni?

-Hello,Marie -Hello

Then you'll need a key

How can you be here already? What's happened with the car?

Guess three time

-Are you exhausted - I just got over with it

Hi,Ferdl

Come on,wake up,you must take over the taxi

Don't try too hard,Toni,look,three bottles

No water will help,I'll make a coffee

And I say again, what has happened?

Nothing special

Apart from having decided to live on my interests from now on

-Really? -Yes I'll withdraw to my private life

Toni,seriously,what has happened?

Because a drunken idiot almost smashed into my car

My God,did the police see it?

For once not,we were lucky both the idiot and myself

Thank God

Perhaps it doesn't matter, but the last time they threatened to

take away the license if they found anybody

without proper documentation driving the car

But I wouldn't worry now, if they once again took you in

I'll tell you I don't care, I'm not afraid of jail

On the contrary there are some advantages being shut in

A wonderful view and quietness

Sleep like a baby,here I can't even sleep properly

Because the springs in the sofa are damaged

During the war I slept on the floor

It didn't bother me

Because it was something different

It was a dream,a nightmare, and every night the same

I stand in front of a desk and behind is a Uniform, enormous big

The whole chest full with decorations

Do you know when you've seen the faces of all the presidents, generals, policemen

which you can see in every newsreel, would be transformed in your head

Into only one face

What's your name? He asks,I say Toni Sponer, with your permission

He says, aha, and points with his pen at me

Give me all the papers, all the papers you have

He starts to pull himself together

My heart beats faster, and then hell breaks lose

Like a madman

Hell lose

Toni,don't take it so badly

You can be glad that Heindl hired you for his taxi

you have to eat, what else can you do

I've got a splendid idea

How much money do you have, roughly?

Roughly,I don't know,but exactly, 82 schilling and 40 grosschen

Very good,we are rich together, I have 69 schilling

Do you know?

Let's go out and celebrate New Years Eve together, will you?

Aha? And what do we do tomorrow?

My program for tomorrow is already fixed and ready

Early tomorrow morning I'll take my toothbrush

and go to the nearest police station

Happy New Year,Gentlemen, Toni Sponer is my name

40year old 78 kilos weight characteristics none, passport none, identity card none

no work permit,no residence permit, nothing, absolutely nothing

I live without a permit, I breathe without a permit

I'm only here by pure chance in this world

my excuses

I've told the superiors, march me off to prison

And now I must wake up my noble benefactor

so we can celebrate New Year's Eve together

Hi,Ferdl

-Morning -Good Morning

You just had Christmas now it's New Year's Eve,you must wake up

-Why? -Why

Because I'd made a promise

not to be a taxi driver anymore, it's below my social position

Because we need you,the whole Vienna is waiting for you,Ferdl

Who needs me?

Everybody,Mr Schubert, Mr Strauss

in the Prater,in the heuriger, the tourists with and without uniforms

Everybody is waiting for your taxi, you can't leave them in the lurch

Toni, this drunken lunatic will crash into every lamppost

-Come here -I have to go

Sit down

I'll make you a strong coffee

-I don't want any coffee, just beer -Definitely not

We have been allocated station duty,we have to be there

otherwise we'll end up having troubles

You have to switch duties

For you it's just a few more hours

During the mean time,he will sober up and when you return

we'll have time enough to celebrate New Year's Eve

Please Toni ,take my drive

-I feel so bad -Me too

But mischief, we had enough of that

We can then leave from here

Please,here is your journal

Thank you

It's cold here.Perhaps you'd like a cup of tea?

No thanks,don't bother about that

I'll make one anyway,it will soon be ready

Yes,yes,as you like it

He is working, you can leave now

-How are you? -I've fear

You'll be safe in America in 24 hours, what else can happen

I know but I'm frightened

Claude expects me to be his belonging

He thinks I am his belonging and then he'd find out that you helped me

Nothing to worry about,I can't stand seeing you being punished

Come on

Good Bye Frau Anna, hope to see you soon

Have a Good Journey,My Child

And for you an even more rewarding New Year

Thanks, terribly hot here, one should open the window

- I'll try,Miss,Good Night -Good Night

Sir,Goldene Loven is a very cosy hotel

It's a pity that it is so small

If you were in a need of a Taxi to the Airport

If you wouldn't mind

Hello,Sir,what's the matter with you?

What are you trying to prove?

Go on,carry on

Really not that easy

The work is always getting more difficult

I must have it in fifteen minutes

That is out of the question

where are the dollars?

Great, then ready in a quarter of an hour, just leave me with my work

During the mean time you could see something which would interest you

That's how America look like

The new citizen

It was not so easy to sober up Heintl

I have to go up and check him so he doesn't start with the booze again

I'm staying here

Marie,I have to go away this night, out of Vienna

Mrs Manelli call the Air line

and ask about the flight tickets, the gentleman in room 14 is waiting for them

Mr Milton, the gentleman who has just arrived,John Milton

What are you looking for? They are already celebrating New Year at the Airline Office

The guess is that it will be a draw 2-2, I think

Who is there?

Excuse me,may I speak with you for a moment,please

Please,what do you want?

-Can I just come in for a moment? -Please

I am Mrs Manelli

Are you aware that you are in room 14 whom do you want to talk to?

Perhaps I am wrong

Are you not Mr Williams from New York?

I knew that you had made a mistake,my Lady

My name is Milton,John Milton, I have just arrived today

I know no one here

John Milton

-Excuse me -Of course,by all means

Why are you pretending to be another man?

Why are you lying?

John was a good friend of mine

You are a brilliant detective,My Lady

Really, and you would think I would fall into this trap like an idiot

-Are you acquainted with John? -Yes

Me too

The story is really simple

John had to suddenly stay in Paris

to do some business and had reserved the room

Stay? He had just telegraphed me today from Salzburg

It is possible that I might be wrong, perhaps I didn't understand

Moment please

What is it

I have called about the tickets, Mr Milton, they are on the way

Thank you very much

And the I must ask you if you have any luggage

-Luggage? -For the lady flying with you Mrs Manelli

-No,I don't have any luggage -Thanks

Who are you?

-I have already told you -I was John's friend..

He had come to Vienna on my behalf, has he not told you that?

Has he allowed you to use his room

with the name, also on the luggage

or does your name also have the same initials?

And his watch and that and that, have you stolen everything?

Where is John,speak out?

If you calm down,I can explain everything,I have not stolen

I want to know where he is, what has happened to him

I know he was sent here with a car

Please just a moment

Hello,quick give me my passport

I've forgot to fill the hotel registration form, just a moment please

-Must it be done -Will be done in a moment

-Number 40 02 -Thank you

Were is the number?

Here around the corner

There he is

Please enter the coach

I can't understand why this person is pretending to be another

How can he be connected with this, he must be a criminal,I know

Try to calm down.My Lady

If something has happened to your friend, would be the first to know

Please, would you excuse me for a moment

Please

-Your name is John Milton isn't it? -Yes

-You have arrived in Vienna this evening? -Yes

You are American how can you explain your good knowledge of German?

My parents were German,we all spoke German at home

Have you any identity cards or preferably a passport?

-Or don't you have it with you? -Of course

Please

Born the 2nd April I can't read

Spokane,Washington

Quiet right, there is a state Washington

but also the Washington were they print the real dollars

Very confusing for us Europeans

-No -I have spoken with you

It is against the regulations, and not usual, give me,my things to do

Please follow me

-May I smoke? -Please

Good Evening Superintendent, Good Evening My Lady

a great pleasure to see you so soon

Herr Manelli will be at your disposal very soon

Please

-Soon finished -Ah,the end of the third movement

Wonderful,it's a pity that we didn't come earlier

I am so glad that you are here

Your manager has also been delighted

Can you wait with the man in the cloakroom

I have lots of things to discuss with you

I can't tell you how grateful I am,Superintendent

I will never forget it

You are welcome Mr Manelli

I had of course immediately phoned you when your wife came to us

Well,enough,they are calling for you

Excuse me

What does all this means? Why have I been brought here?

May I

When Mr Kruger reported the lady had disappeared

I ordered that I should be immediately informed if she was found

Yes,but the the issue with American is not a nice thing

I hope he will not cause problems

I understand, please, let the gentleman come in

It's probably best if I speak with him myself

I hope I can clear up things

-Mr Milton -Yes

My name is Manelli,I'm glad to see you

My wife has put you into serious troubles,I am very sorry about that

- This is not her fault,it's my fault - I cant really follow you

I am much more responsible for my wife's actions

than any other married man

I am really her guardian

You

My wife is ill,she is suffering from obsessions

She invents accusations which sometimes can sound very trustworthy

So trustworthy

and often innocent people are dragged into it,like you today,Mr Milton

I have been often advised to send her to..

..an institution but I can't do that

We were so happy before she became ill

You would understand me,if you yourself have loved someone so dearly,as I have

Please excuse me

Yes,naturally,I didn't know

I hope you don't think,that I am holding you,Mr Milton

Speaking candidly I should never have brought you here

But I am an old admirer of Mr Manelli

And I wanted to help him to avoid a scandal

Of course, everything is cleared up,of course

Karin

We were locked in have you opened again?

Her Ladyship knocked and naturally...

-Has she left? -Just a minute ago

Thanks

Don't worry we will soon find her

Please,no, she will return to our house,Kruger

Can I leave now?

I would rather like you to invite you to be my guest after the concert

After the intermission I am playing Chopin

If you want to hear it

Many thanks I am leaving in a few hours

Then allow me to thank you once more for your understanding

-Farewell,Mr Milton -Good Night

-Have a good journey -Thanks,my passport?

-You have forgotten to give you my passport -Passport?You are right,of course

That would be a delicate matter

Don't lose it,you have heard it is not easy to get a new one

-God Bless,Good Night -Good Night

May I wish you a very happy New Year

Please,my key

Yes,you have earlier forgotten

to close your door and that was not prudent

I am sorry, have my flight tickets arrived?

Yes,they came just as you left

Didn't you see the lady?

What lady?

The lady who were with you,Mrs Manelli

She has given you the tickets?

Yes,one of them were in your name, was I supposed not do that?

-Where is the lady now? -She has just left

Mr Milton?

The lady told me where she left to

I had suggested the address as you can be undisturbed there

-I also go there with my girlfriends -Excellent

Many thanks

-Good Evening -Good Evening

-One schilling 50 -OK

Please

She will come soon

Good Evening,Sir

Give me your hand and follow me

We have a very nice program tonight

On the shores of Ganges

Here,Sir

A beautiful program

-Have a good time -Many thanks

I want to be sure that you are not leaving me at lurch at the airport

You have to leave in a such a hurry

Please give me the tickets

I will not do it immediately, first I want to ask you a few questions

OK,what do you want to know

My husband has tried to persuade you that I am mad

Yes,he spoke of obsessions

And were you convinced?

No

He has spoken with you as you were the real John Milton

why do you think he did that?

Why couldn't he do that?

Because he knows Milton as well as I do

John is dead,isn't he?

Yes,but I have nothing to do with that

You must believe me

He was shot in my car,I am a taxi driver

He entered my cab at The West Bahn Hof

Many say that we have the most beautiful pictures

-We are just closing -Yes, many thanks

What I can't understand why you are helping the murderer?

I don't want to help anybody but myself

You are pretending to be another person

My husband knows that and plays along, why is he doing that?

You know that as well as I do

John Milton arrived this evening in Vienna

When I leave early tomorrow morning as John Milton, then nobody is missing

Nobody is dead and no crime has been committed

Exactly that is what your husband wants, as he is the murderer

Elven O'clock,Ladies and Gentlemen,we are closing

Happy New Year, from tomorrow A boat ride in Immts

a very fascinating program, is this your first time here?

-Yes -I hope you will return

Most people want to come back, every person love exotic countries

and thinks he will go there some day Happy New Year

But of course many are coming because it is dark here

Yes,Good Night and Happy New Year

Hi,Miss you want to enter?

Come along

Completely ruined had it on for the first time in the taxi

It is not even fully paid yet

These stains what are they really,it's blood!

What are you talking about? Blood?

Do you think someone has marked that, looks like red wine stains to me

Looks really like blood

How do you explain that,Heindl?

I know nothing

Could also be lipstick

How long did work this evening?

That was my first drive

It's really time now to clear this up

Who else is driving that car?

Who else is going with your car?

It was something about a man without papers

Without papers?

There is nothing like that, you must mistake me for someone else,Superintendent

Look,Heindl, you have often had proper dealings with us

Since I was born,Superintendent

Today you shall remember

and dare you if you don't tell us the name of the man

I know nothing

We will soon have him

Please let me have a look at your passport,Toni

Because of me John came to Vienna

Because of me Claude has killed him

What shall I do?

You shouldn't stay here

When you are away, you will see things more clearly

Toni do you really believe you can get through with this?

So far it has worked excellent

and when you are really there

a big country where no one know each other

And don't forget I was brought up there

I would also take that risk

Do you notice how satisfied he is?

That he will leave

The only prospect

My father was a Professor or something similar

We had our own house

from every window you could see the garden or the park

And that

Every time one sees it,you think of

how to get into another situation

I understand Marie

I think of decent curtains on the windows

New springs in the sofa

and to sit beside a real man

That would be the right prospect

Please give me the flight tickets,Marie is right

We must leave

-We? -Yes,us together

Thanks, our plane leaves at two o'clock

Your husband can not imagine that you would leave with me

He will search you everywhere not just the airport

When is the bus leaving for the airport?

In about an hour

The new year starts in five minutes

I was afraid that I would be drinking all alone

Have a good journey

I wish you the best for your goals

Marie

Happy New Year

My God

They are looking for you

Let's flee over the roof

Come along,Karin,quick

-Marie! -Go,go

To the top

We are looking for a man called Sponer,Toni Sponer

Yes,he lives here,has he committed a crime?

Do you know where he is?

No,I have no idea

We were to celebrate New Years Eve together but he has jilted me

I must drink all alone

Happy New Year Gentlemen

Come along

Look there they are

Come along

He sees us

Maybe we can reach a free space again through this cellar

And suddenly everything is so still

The bells have silenced

We have in between the New Year run through two years

Oh God

I can

-I must stop for a while -Of course

We have time before the bus takes us to the airport

One moment

We have enough time

There is a place to sit on,come, I'm sorry not too comfortable

Karin,your name is Karin,isn't it?

We don't need to be worried any more

We will make it

That what I always imagined,no more fear

But not for Claude

Yes,he is a strange person

All what he says seems so genuine and persuasive

I know

He can be both kind and loveable and tender

But

But no

What is it?

What is it?

It was a stone

-Here! -Yes

There is something chucked in there

How long have you been married?

Almost five years

I got to know him on a concert tour in Grandsen Schneerig

Then we had our first rage of fire

After a week we were married

I was happy during the honeymoon

Was it after his first wife had died?

I don't know

Perhaps one could die by just leaving him just as I am doing now

Then you can't believe that fear, possessiveness and unfairness can be deadly

I took part in everything

Do you know that a year ago he put me in a sanatorium

He had tenderly taken me there to be cured on behalf of us both

I have proof of that

even Claude had his love

And now he is a murderer

Come along,nobody is here

No,Hans, I want to go home

Let us pull this off,Lotte

No,I should already be at home

What's the matter it's New Year's Eve

No,I promised Mum to be back at home at 12 30

I've already spoken to her

Blame yourself

She was a nice lass, wasn't she?

-It is better now, isn't it? -Yes

Fine

-Do you want a cigarette? -Thanks

Who was John Milton?

A real friend

We grow up together

The last time I saw him was at my wedding,he was a witness

I knew that he would not abandon me

You are not smoking?

Yes,it's the last one we must both use it

Thanks

When we come to the end then there is no more to go

Not copied it,are you sure?

Perhaps with her name

The lady is slender, long, blonde and have a brown coat with fur attached

Correct

Thanks

Nothing?

What should we do,she must be somewhere

We have already called dozens of hotels, and there are hundreds in Vienna

It would be such a small chance

We have no time

Hotel Savoy, has a Mrs Manelli been registered, yes,Manelli like the pianist

No thank you

Look

This guy has said that he will fly tonight

What?

Why would Karin travel with a man she surely must think is a criminal?

We must know when he leaves

But how? Train,Bus,Airplane

He would have a big choice

Please call the superintendent

Superintendent?

Don't involve the police,it's too much

I don't care

Look, Claude, Karin doesn't love you any more, all is gone, let her go

I can't

Not any more

Perhaps yesterday but now it is too late

-We must go to the airport -Please,enter

Excuse me ,please show me your flight tickets

Many thanks

Have you booked a passenger called John Milton?

Yes

Has he cancelled the flight?

Not yet

Perhaps you have a notice for him?

No,no

Mr Neumann

Please queue up

Mr Gantner

-Please Mr Milton -Many thanks

Mr Milton

I am from Löwen

-Yes -From Goldene Lowen

The hotel?

Perhaps you have forgotten something?

Not what I am aware of.Perhaps my luggage?

Yes,it is there,Sir,a moment please

A little formality,the bill 65 Schilling

At once

Not a very pleasurable experience

to go around with your luggage in the middle of New Year's Night

At home the family all alone

I understand, here you have five dollars, everything is cleared up

Five? That is too much, many many thanks

Happy New Year and a lovely...

perhaps I can offer you Austrian cigarettes?

Thank you

Now just the bag

I wish you the best and a good journey

-The same for you -All the same

-Happy New Year -Thanks

You have never been to the US,my dear Lady?

I'm sorry I must need to have a vaccination certificate,just a formality

-At our health office -Please,where is it?

Over there

Moment

You entered with 500 US $,Mr Milton, how many have you still left?

Almost all of them

That's a pity,we would much more like you to spend it here

Next time you will stay longer and spend more

Good Bye,Good Night,Have a Good Journey

Everything is settled

Nobody is here

Hello

Good Evening or should I say Good Morning

You can pick and chose whatever you like

Gentlemen, you have really mixed up things, how is this going to end?

You shouldn't mix up with things which doesn't concern you

You don't need a vaccination certificate, Karin, you are not going away

You are not healthy enough for a trip

But to live together with a murderer

Is that healthy?

I think that in your situation I would be very careful with my words

Who would believe this absurdity?

The Police,Herr Manelli

Police? Then we both have the same view

Kruger, could you please tell the police superintendent to come?

You have two choices

Either you fly away

or you would be prosecuted and sentenced for murder

-You have to decide -Go away

I plead with you

Nobody would believe me and nobody would believe you

Oh,Mr Milton I didn't realize that I should see you so soon again

Plane Number 72 Frankfurt New York Passengers embarque

Is that not your plane,Mr Milton?

Plane Number 72 Frankfurt New York Passengers embarque

Yes,that's my plane

Plane Number 72 Frankfurt New York Passengers embarque

-Mr Milton,isn't it? -Yes

Please embarque

I am not flying with you

Plane Number 72 Frankfurt New York Departure

Mr Milton you are going to miss your plane!

Have you forgotten something?

Superintendent

-Please arrest me -Arrest?

Yes,why?

I am not Milton my name is Toni Sponer

The passport you have seen I have stolen from a dead man who was murdered

What are you talking about?

Yes,about murder

I speak about John Milton

and this man has killed him in my taxi yesterday evening

Mr Manelli should have killed someone, do you understand all this?

It is most likely an obsession,or imagination of my wife

And if he really is not John Milton

he is most likely guilty of crime he himself has committed

Stop with your fairy tales

You have never thought that I really was John Milton

Why not?

Because you already knew John Milton, very well

John Milton was your wedding witness the best friend of your wife

Who came from America to help your wife

This man is mad

Superintendent,in this trunk which belonged to the deceased

there is a photo of John Milton

together with Mr Manelli and his wife at the wedding

That's a lie

Show me the picture?

Please

Yes

The chase is over for you and me

What is to become of you?

Nothing special, everything would be the same, running around without any papers

Besides having a blazing happiness

We have had a tremendous luck

Naturally I agree.Everything is at stake

This is comic, this morning I wanted to go to jail

And now when it is very likely, I don't feel so happy about it

Where would you be when I come out?

Here,Toni
