We should be going, sweetheart.

You almost ready?

You tell me.

Oh, woman.

If we didn't have an agenda this morning, uh...

We'd pick up where we left off last night?

-Mm... -[chuckles]

Ooh, Tia Allen is going to pinch herself

-when she sees you. -So is Dani.

[chuckles] I can't wait to see Dani's face

when she realizes we're all doing the interview with her.

Our baby girl has crawled her way back to life

and deserves to know how proud we are of her.

Mm. Ah, don't go getting all sappy now.

-Save it for the cameras. -[laughs softly]

[indistinct chatter]

[gasps]

-Oh. This? -And here I thought

my dear Dani was the model.

Strike a pose for me.

-DANI: Ah, there it is. -PAMELA: Oh!

One day, I will convince Andre to sign with our agency.

My baby is too beautiful to stay behind that camera.

Dani, I agree to one publicity shoot,

-and your gears start turning. -[laughs]

Now, Pamela, Tia Allen's people do know

that Andre won't be part of the interview, right?

-Photos only? -They are well aware.

-Good. -ANDRE: Good.

So, when is the camera crew gonna get here?

Oh. Actually, there's been a change of plans.

Pamela said they moved to the club.

Uh, yes. They are shooting B-roll now,

which means they'll need us soon.

Shall we go?

-DANI: Let's do it. Okay! -Let's do it.

Risky strategy, but it worked.

[chuckles] Yeah.

Well, good cop versus very bad cop

tends to give me what I want in these scenarios.

Not my usual move, but hey,

we got Walter Vaughan to drop the eviction proceedings,

-so I am not complaining. -Yeah.

Listen, I am very glad that June's friend

gets to stay in her rent-stabilized apartment,

but your old man can't keep taking on

these pro bono cases, baby.

People will think I've gone soft.

Oh, no. Wouldn't want to tarnish your legacy with all this good.

[laughs] I knew you'd understand.

Oh, wow.

Mom said you've been working out now.

Are you feeling like your normal self again?

Yeah. Yeah, I'm getting there.

And if you're worried that I let anything slip

to your mother, don't be.

She has no idea what Tia and Pamela have cooked up.

Right, but why are you involved?

-Well, Pam... -Knock, knock.

Ready to go, Naomi?

-Everyone's en route. -Yes.

Okay, I'll drive. Let's go.

Oh, Dad, we're surprising Mom.

She doesn't know that the whole family

is doing the interview with her.

Yeah, that includes me.

I'm part of the surprise.

Why?

That is an awful idea.

♪ ♪

-Tia. -Hello.

It's so lovely to see you again.

You, too.

-Of course, you know Pamela. -Yes.

And this is my husband Andre.

Oh, Andre Richardson, renowned photographer,

former globe-trotter.

I have seen your photos.

Hope they've gotten your stamp of approval.

Oh, fabulous work.

You and Dani are a match made in heaven.

Tia, should I check with the staff

and make sure we're all set up?

Oh, no need. I've reserved an event room.

We can head over and talk schedule.

-Okay. Yeah? -Cool. Uh, go, go.

I'm gonna grab some coffee.

DANI: Okay, see you soon.

Mwah.

[clears throat]

Does my sister know what's waiting for her?

Not a clue.

[both laugh]

Girls, Pamela invited me to be a part of the program.

Why would she do that?

Isn't this entire interview supposed to shine

a positive light on Mom and her career?

No offense, Dad, but this has nothing to do with you.

I'm just trying to be supportive, okay?

After the mess I've made, don't you think that's overdue?

Well, that mess is the point.

What if it comes up during the interview?

Mom will be humiliated.

Chelsea, let me remind you both, I would never do anything

that would further hurt your mother, okay?

I would never ruin this for her.

Well, from what I've seen of Tia's work,

dragging her guests through the mud isn't really her style.

She does thoughtful, respectful interviews, so...

maybe it'll be okay.

I have a weird feeling about this, but whatever.

We need to go before we're late.

TIA: I love these buttons.

DANI: Oh, I'm so glad you like it.

You know, I told Tatum that the only way

that this dress would work is if...

Darling, we wanted to make today extra special for you.

-I don't... -TIA: We are gonna

tell your story with a little help

from your family and friends.

Dani Dupree,

-welcome to your life. -[laughter]

-[laughs]: Oh... -Surprise.

Dani, I'd love to just jump right in,

-if you don't mind. -That's why I'm here.

Now, you grew up with some pretty well-known parents.

Civil rights activist/senator for a father

and a superstar mother.

I mean, Anita is an EGOT, yes?

Yes. We all aspire to be like Mother and Daddy.

Does that sort of upbringing come with pressure?

Did you ever feel like, because of who they were,

you and your sister had to achieve

a certain level of success?

You would assume that it would,

but they were just so normal at home,

especially when Nicole and I were kids.

You never felt the celebrity of it all?

The only time I knew they were famous

was from other people's reactions.

At home, they were present, they were hands-on,

-they made sure we behaved. -[laughs]

But they also let us be kids and learn from our mistakes.

I'm sure they had a lot of wisdom to impart.

We definitely knew the importance

of making an impact in the world,

but they also encouraged Nicole and I to find our own callings.

And for you, that was modeling.

My happy place as a kid was in my mother's closet.

-Ooh. -The gowns, the shoes.

I can imagine, when your mother is Anita Williams Dupree,

playing dress-up had to be exciting.

You know it.

Oh, and then when I found out that there's a job

where you can wear clothes and have your photo taken,

Tia, I was hooked.

Now, you started modeling at a young age.

Tell me about that.

NICOLE: Girls, meet Tatum Stewart.

CHELSEA: Like we wouldn't recognize the woman responsible

-for Mom's comeback. -[soft laughter]

Dani has done just as much for me, if not more.

It's nice to officially meet you both.

And, Chelsea, I'm a ChelseaKat fan.

-Oh. -The fandom's mutual.

[laughter]

You know, it's amazing when you think

of how far Mom has come, considering how tough it was

-when she started. -And how young she was.

NAOMI: Mm-hmm.

I wasn't as young as some.

Naomi Campbell was scouted at 15.

I was already 17.

Now, how did you get your parents

to let you chase that dream?

I mean, you weren't even legally an adult yet.

It wasn't easy, but they came around.

I'd love to know what that turning point was.

How about we hear directly from the sources?

Vernon, Anita?

-Stop it. You two! -[laughter]

[gasps] What are you doing?

-You are sneaky. -[laughter]

-Aw. -Mwah.

-Hello, dear. -So nice to see you.

You, as well.

DANI: Oh, my goodness.

What an honor to meet you both.

Anita, how are you?

Doing well.

I finished my cancer treatment,

and I'm feeling more like myself.

And looking beautiful while doing it.

I agree.

Now, Dani and I were just talking about

when she left home to model.

What made you two come around to the idea?

Well, the first thing was accepting

that this one had made up her mind.

Yeah, they had a vision

-of college and then career. -Mm-hmm.

We appreciated that she had found her purpose,

but we... we also wanted her to be safe,

-where we could see her. -ANITA: Unfortunately,

I knew all too well how cruel

powerful people can be to impressionable young girls.

I had seen a piece on 60 Minutesa long time ago

about modeling agents exploiting their girls.

Uh, the one featuring Jean-Luc Brunel.

I-I'm familiar.

I was worried out of my mind

that something like that would happen to our baby,

so I put my foot down.

Mm. And how'd that go over, Dani?

Daddy's word was law, but I just knew

I had to make him and my mother see it from my perspective.

ANITA: Which she did.

-Loudly. -[laughs]

-At every turn. -[laughter]

And, of course, she threw in my face the-- my own history,

that I was just as... as determined and passionate

as she was at that age.

Difference is, Anita had her group mates with her.

But after a lot of tears and some shouting...

They let me fly.

They said if they were gonna see me go forward,

they wanted me to do it on their terms and their prayers.

Which proved fruitful.

Dani walked shows all across Europe,

and she was the first Black woman

to grace the cover of Eye on Fashion.

And all that is wonderful, but that is not

what we prayed for when Dani left for New York.

We prayed

that she would always remember who she was

and value her worth.

And never lose that brilliant...

...that brilliant self-confidence of hers.

And that's the prayer that was answered.

That's beautiful.

I'm getting nervous.

Mom's usually good with surprises,

but during a TV interview? I don't know.

We will find out soon enough.

Mother and Daddy are with her now.

And the other surprise guest?

In the bridal suite, getting ready right this moment.

Huh. It's a little early.

Don't tell me you're getting nervous about being on camera.

I've done plenty of press conferences.

Yeah, but this is you talking about your personal life now,

not some court case.

Are you trying to convince me not to do this interview, Andre?

Of course not.

But this is a very important day to my wife,

and I don't need you embarrassing her, Bill.

So, if you're not feeling up for it...

I have no plans on ruining Dani's day, okay?

Good, good.

You know, I think you'd be more than gracious

after she saved your life.

Right.

Yeah. So, we have an understanding?

[scoffs]

TIA: Now, after Dani made her way to New York,

at what point did she connect with you, Pamela?

About six months after Dani hit the town,

I saw her backstage at a Julien Charpentier show.

One look and I knew she had that it factor.

Pamela walked up to me and said,

"Make me your agent and I'll make you a star."

Ooh. Bold.

Now, what made you take that approach?

Well, I've always been a straight shooter,

but I knew I had to make an impression quickly.

Dani had charisma for days,

but she was still spinning her wheels.

Really? It seems to me that your success was overnight.

Yes and no.

It was harder to break in than I expected.

You know, casting directors and designers

would say, "We already have a Black girl,"

as if there was only room for one.

So, you needed representation.

I needed the right representation.

Someone who had connections and believed in me.

Enter Pamela.

Well, my strategy was simple.

I mean, Dani is so much more than just a pretty face,

with her intelligence, her playful personality

and her fierceness.

I mean, Dani was born to inspire, not just pose.

So, I repackaged her with all of her strengths,

and the designers loved it.

Not everyone accepted me, though.

Well, no, but so many people fought for you.

That Eye on Fashioncover?

Dani was the first Black model to do it,

but it still wasn't enough.

It was the Rue du Chiccover that truly validated her status.

The courageous Jean Paul Bellivier.

The luxury goods CEO?

PAMELA: Mm-hmm. The very one.

Jean Paul threatened to pull his ads

if they didn't give Dani the credit she deserved.

Suddenly, all of the doors

that had slammed in my face were wide open.

How did it feel when you realized

that you were living your dreams?

Overwhelming, in the best possible way.

You were so young when all of this was unfolding.

Was there ever a time where you wish

you had stayed closer to the safety of home?

I missed my family, for sure, but I wasn't giving up,

and Pamela had my back from the moment I signed with her.

She was so much more than just an agent.

She was a confidant and a protector, too.

Well, I just insisted Dani be treated with respect.

I heard every excuse as to why she shouldn't

be paid more than her counterparts.

-I wouldn't budge. -Hmm.

You think I'm fierce?

Well, the second you allow anyone to treat you

as second-rate, you'll start to believe it, too.

Now, eventually, you walked away altogether,

even though you were still in high demand.

I did.

How about we meet the reasons why?

Your daughters Naomi and Chelsea.

-[laughter] -[Dani squeals]

Hi.

So, how did it go?

Wonderfully.

This is just what Dani needed.

Ah... Um, OJ, please.

I forgot these didn't automatically come

paired with bubbly.

-Hey, no judgment here. -[both chuckle]

-Hi, I'm, um... -Andre Richardson.

I'm familiar with your work.

Kalista Kilroy.

Nice to meet you, Kalista.

Oh, so, I know you, but you don't know me.

That's it?

Should I?

Don't worry. You will soon.

NICOLE: I'm sure this Welcome to Your Lifefeature

will be great publicity for your brand as well, Tatum.

Working with Dani is a dream.

She is so intuitive about how the women will respond

-to the collections. -Hmm.

Nicole, what's this I hear about Bill participating, too?

Uh, Chelsea and Naomi said that Pamela

invited him personally.

Well, that's surprising. Pamela doesn't even like Bill.

Okay. Okay. It was me.

The footage of Dani brandishing a gun

at his wedding got millions of views.

I was thinking, if they could present

a united front and show that it's all in the past,

people will finally let it go.

You want to reclaim the narrative

and put my sister and your company in a positive light.

That still doesn't explain why Bill

was willing to get involved.

That man is a walking regret.

Probably looking for ways to make amends.

Yeah, well, he can try all he wants.

Nothing is gonna erase all the hurt he caused Dani

during their marriage.

He's gonna have to ease his conscience some other way.

Well, if it isn't Bill Hamilton.

It's been a while.

What the hell are you doing here, Kalista?

Same as you, silly.

Did Pamela invite you?

Like I would even take the call. From that scrub?

[laughs] No.

Tia Allen reached out.

And I'm assuming Dani doesn't know.

No, but I'm looking forward to catching up with my girl.

Seeing you has been a surprise.

Any plans after?

Bill, you're up. You can follow...

-Kalista. -Hmm.

Charmed to see me, I'm sure.

Ah.

Bill, they're almost ready for you.

Perfect timing.

Well, I'll come with.

I'm sure I have to go up soon, too.

Actually, you-you don't.

And unfortunately, it's a small space,

so why don't you get a drink at the bar?

I've had two, on your tab.

Have another.

[laughs softly]

-Pamela? -Oh.

Hey. Um...

[stammers] Actually, I think

I want to see some of this interview.

-Is-is that okay? -Of course.

-Come with us. -Yeah.

Now, I understand that you took after your father, Naomi.

You're an attorney.

I am, but my dad and I are drawn

to very different sectors of the law,

and that's mainly due to my mom's influence.

How do you mean?

Well, Mom was very active when we were kids.

She somehow made it to every game and recital

while working at the family foundation.

She wanted Chelsea and me to know the importance

of helping people who need it.

So, I try to model my firm after those teachings.

Mm. High praise, Dani.

Bill and I have always said that our girls

are the best parts of both of us.

And you, Chelsea of ChelseaKat,

followed in your mom's footsteps,

walking runways all over the globe.

It was a blast while it lasted,

and I was fortunate to have a momager by my side

who knew how to avoid all the obstacles.

Now, unlike Dani, you didn't have to, like,

fight your way into modeling.

But when you wanted to quit and start your own company...

-Different story. -[laughter]

DANI: I had trouble coming to terms

with the fact that Chelsea wanted out.

You know, I loved every minute of us working together.

The clothes, the shoots,

the late nights perfecting her walk,

and I thought we had many, many more years left.

I had a different calling,

and now Mom understands that and supports me 100%.

And she's not just saying that.

I really... I could not be more proud

of Chelsea and her cousin Kat

and everything that they've accomplished

with their business in such a short time.

And Naomi, too.

The work that she does,

it gives us all hope for the future.

Well, that's all credit to you, Mom.

Knowing you have our backs no matter what

helps us push through anything that could come our way.

You're obviously very close to your family,

and I'm sure they were by your side a few years ago

when things weren't so bright.

What was going through your mind

when you opened fire at your ex-husband's wedding?

Wow.

Diving right in, huh?

Wouldn't be a true feature if we didn't explore everything.

I was in a very dark place,

and I did some things that I'm not proud of.

It was a painful time for all of us.

But Mom showed resilience.

And she inspired our entire family.

-I know she's inspired me. -Thanks, Chelsea Bear.

And today, Mom and Dad have a much healthier relationship.

Believe it or not, they've become friends.

We have, but, um, before you ask any more questions, Tia,

I-I don't want to go into any more detail

out of respect for my ex-husband's privacy.

Well, how about we bring him in on the conversation, then?

Uh, I'm sorry?

Uh, Bill Hamilton, come on out.

Who's up after Bill?

That would be a surprise.

Uh-oh. A surprise for us or for Dani?

-Both. -NICOLE: Mother?

of your relationship.

You are madly in love,

you decide to get married, and then you ask Dani

to give up her flourishing career?

Well, it, um...

It was a mutual decision.

By that time, my perspective had shifted,

and it felt like the right time.

Yeah, well, Dani may have given up modeling,

but she was still working.

You know, all of her energy and passion

went into help build my practice

and later raising our girls.

Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't be here without her sacrifices.

Now, as an attorney,

did you ever consider being Dani's agent?

No. No, no, I...

You know, I wouldn't have felt comfortable with people

thinking that I was taking advantage of her success, so no.

So, just give it up altogether?

Well, we wanted a more traditional home life,

like her parents gave her.

I don't regret my decisions for a moment,

because it meant that I could be more present with them

and put my energy into things like the foundation

and helping to establish Bill's firm.

How did you repay that favor?

I let my family down, Tia.

That's how.

I can admit that.

I became more protective of my ego than my marriage,

and I didn't appreciate and respect Dani

the way she deserved.

It's my biggest regret.

I, uh...

I had to learn a lot of really hard lessons along the way.

But, man, you know, how lucky am I

that Dani was eager to get back out there

but she was also a little bit cautious.

I didn't want to run the risk of her,

you know, backing out of the opportunity

because she thought it was a favor.

I wanted her to connect with Tatum on her own

and shine like I knew she would

without me being involved.

Baby, that's really considerate.

Yeah.

Sounds like your husband is also

your number one fan.

And I'm his.

Aw.

[chuckles]

CHELSEA: Kat is going to die when she sees this.

I wish that Jackie could've stayed longer.

Honey, when Vegas calls an Anita Williams impersonator,

you pick up the phone.

-[chuckling] -Right.

How's everyone feeling?

Great. How's Mom?

Oh, she's fantastic. This day is going exactly as planned.

ANITA: Good.

Pamela, Nicole mentioned Kalista Kilroy was here.

It finally came back to me.

She was Dani's first agent, wasn't she?

Yes, unfortunately,

Tia's people tracked her down.

And by the time they looped me in, it was too late.

What's the big deal?

Yeah. Do they not get along?

Kalista was a terrible agent.

She never answered Dani's calls.

I mean, she hardly ever booked her any work.

It was easy to poach her.

Is she still claiming

-to have "discovered" Danielle? -PAMELA: Mm.

-And launched her career. -ANITA: Mm.

But everybody knows that was you.

Oh, it doesn't matter. It's her one claim to fame.

You know, we'll let her have it,

and then hopefully she will disappear.

[chuckling]

Now, I know we have hit you with a lot today,

but are you ready for your next surprise?

-Everyone has been so good. -[chuckles]

I can't wait to see who it is this time.

Well, I think this will be a nice blast from the past.

Someone who was there at the onset of your career.

-Oh. -Well...

Kalista... [giggles] Kilroy.

-Hello. [chuckles] -Mwah.

-KALISTA: Hello. -TIA: Have a seat.

-Hi. -Hi.

[sighs]

All right.

Now, Kalista, you were Dani's first agent.

How does it feel seeing her now?

Mm. It lets me know that my instincts were correct.

I took a green 17-year-old girl

and made her iconic.

I did that.

What did you see in Dani all those years ago

that made you want to invest in her?

I've always had an eye for sussing out talent.

-Mm. -And...

obviously, Dani is gorgeous, of course.

But let me tell you--

this one is a piece of work.

I had to teach her everything.

TIA: Well, Dani, how does it feel

to reunite with the first person who poured into your dreams?

It's good to see you, Kalista.

It's been a long time.

It didn't have to be.

If she hadn't, uh, dumped me for the other side.

You know.

I still had a few things that I could've taught her.

Like what?

Like how to hold on to your man, for one.

DANI: Excuse me?

TIA: Uh, Kalista, perhaps,

-um... -[Kalista chuckles]

You know what?

You made the right decision by getting rid of Bill's ass.

Because he's a very bad man.

Good at being bad. [inhales sharply]

Ooh, I still get the shivers

when I think about us.

Ooh, child.

-But he's an awful husband. -BILL: Okay, cut.

Cut. Cut. Stop recording.

Why-- Turn-turn it off. Stop!

-TIA: Wh-What is happening? -[sighs]

Hey, Dani, listen to me, please.

-No. -[stammers] Hey.

Dani.

Why the hell would you do that?

Karma never forgets.

[exhales]

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey, hey, what-what's wrong?

-We need to leave. Now. -Why?

-Dani, wait. -No.

The interview is over.

Can someone tell me what the hell is going on?

That son of a bitch.

-Who? -DANI and NICOLE: Bill.

I was with Pamela and Tatum. I heard.

That woman Kalista was bragging on camera

about sleeping with Bill.

Wait, what? [stammers]

I just met her earlier. Who even is she?

She was my first agent.

I fired her for Pamela.

We don't even know if what she said was true.

You didn't see Bill's face.

It was true. [shudders]

Andre, can we please just leave?

Baby, hey, l-listen to me.

After all the good you did today, you're gonna let Bill

-ruin your interview? -It's already ruined.

I was humiliated out there.

Hey, hey, hey.

Tia is deleting all that footage.

None of it will be in the interview.

So Bill the fixer strikes again.

If only he could fix himself to keep it in his pants.

Dani, can we talk alone, please?

-Hell nah, you can't. -Look,

what happened with Kalista, that was years ago.

It didn't mean anything. She came by the house saying

she wanted to make things right with you and--

There is not a single person here

who wants to hear any of your excuses.

You, you're gonna go in the restroom,

you're going to freshen yourself up, take a deep breath,

I'm gonna tell Tia we need a ten,

and then we're gonna go back in there

-and we're gonna finish this. -Yeah.

She's right, babe.

Babe, look at me.

You have earned today, okay?

And no one is gonna take that away from you.

Come on.

[groans]

Dani, I apologize.

I had no idea that you and Kalista were not,

you know, in a good relationship.

That's okay. Let's just finish on a high note.

-[chuckles] -Okay.

So, Nicole, all day we have been talking about Dani the star.

Who is she to you?

Dani likes to joke about being a fashion model over a role model,

but I think she has a blind spot.

-Mm. How so? -DANI: Don't listen to her.

She's gonna think you're serious.

-I am! -[laughs]

I am the eldest.

But I think we should all be following her lead.

And you are the eldest and the more reserved, right?

I am serious.

She is the silly.

-Not in this moment. -[laughing]

It will come back.

That is the thing about my sister, Tia--

her joy, her light, it is irrepressible.

I remember back in elementary school,

my friends who didn't have siblings, they were so happy

that they didn't have to share or they got more.

I never believed in that,

because I had a built-in best friend

who made me laugh every single day.

Last year, we were really worried about her.

I was completely lost.

But you held on to hope and you found your way back.

And in doing so, you taught us all to do the same.

Me, the kids, our parents.

[shuddering]

You are a gift, Dani,

and so much more than any one feature

-could capture. -[chuckles]

We love you dearly.

-And I love you. -Mm!

[laughter]

-[sighs] -[sniffles]

But you could stand to be a little lighter.

[laughing]

Look, I swear,

I had no idea she'd be here.

Eh, we're not blaming you, Bill.

Not exactly.

I'm just glad Dani continued with the interview.

I can only imagine how upset she was.

ANDRE: You know, Kalista is gone.

Hopefully for good this time.

Why aren't you?

I'm waiting for Dani to finish so I can apologize.

You already tried that, remember?

Dad, maybe just let Mom cool off.

Today's been taxing.

Yeah. If she's still upset, she probably won't be able

to hear what you have to say anyway.

Okay. I guess you got a point.

I'll... I'll let her cool off.

You can do whatever you want to do, man.

Just not here with my wife.

-DANI: We did it. -Ah.

[laughter]

ANDRE: Hey, I'm so proud of you!

-We did it! -You did it! [laughing]

-And you! -[laughter]

And you! And you!

-Good job, Mom. -You were on camera!

[laughter]

-You all got me so good. -NAOMI: We sure did.

-We sure did. -[laughter]
