[intermittent rattling gunfire]

[train klaxon blares]

[rattle of train on tracks]

[inhales and exhales]

[people chattering in background]

[announcer] The train approaching platform three is

the 20:55 service to London Euston.

[David] Cover yourself up, Ella. We’re not there yet. Good girl.

Shh! Shh! Shh! Not our stop yet. Back to sleep.

[indistinct chattering]

[exhales]

[man] This train is about to depart.

[indistinct chattering]

[whistle blows]

[man] Stand clear of the doors!

Stand clear of the doors!

Excuse me.

Is everything all right in there?

Sorry, madam, you wouldn't mind looking after my kids for a minute, would you?

I’ll be right back.

-Yeah. No problem. -Thank you very much. I’ll be right back.

...suspicious in toilet C-D.

Sergeant David Budd, Metropolitan Police. What’s going on?

You’ve got an intelligence report for an Asian male in his 20s?

How do you know about that?

I saw you checking out a guy. He’s fine. I saw someone suspicious at Marston.

I don't know if he boarded the train. He could be in the toilet.

Look, I’m an operational firearms commander with Specialist Protection.

What’s the plan?

British Transport Police have put out an alert on a possible suicide bomber

attempting to board a London-bound service.

We've been ordered to stop the train at Barnet Shed. It's a derelict depot.

-SO 19-- -SCO19.

-They’re going to board the train. -How long till we're there?

[sighs] Seven minutes.

He’ll detonate in the carriage for maximum casualties.

Right, stick with me. What’s your name?

-Uh, Sandra. -Give me your number.

Uh, 07700-900-876.

-I need to call this in. -Do it.

[approaching sirens]

This way, Sarge. We’ll take you down to trackside.

[chattering over police radios]

-[woman shushes] -[baby gurgles]

[David exhales]

I need a few more minutes. Is that all right?

-Yeah. No problem. -Thank you.

[muffled rummaging]

-[phone rings] -Hello?

I can’t let him out. There’s dozens of passengers, my kids included.

-What-- -Can you unlock the exit doors...

[bleeping]

-Hello? -[rumble of train in tunnel]

Shit.

Shit.

[breathes heavily]

[grunts softly]

Oh.

[breathes heavily] Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on...

[rumble of train leaving tunnel]

[mutters softly]

[ringing tone]

-What I said is-- -The stop’s just a few minutes away.

If the train brakes, he’ll know it’s an unscheduled stop.

He’ll detonate the device in the carriage. Can you unlock the doors as we're moving?

[stutters] Yes.

When I say so, do it. Let me take care of the rest.

-The rest of what? -To throw him off the train.

Stand by.

[breathes heavily]

Do it now.

Subject does not appear to be carrying a device. He's an Asian male, late 20s,

wearing a black baseball cap, gray T-shirt,

carrying a green coat. Advise SCO19 he’s heading towards

the front of the train and does not appear to be a threat. Repeat, not a threat.

I’m going to examine the toilet for signs of a device.

-[over radio] Trojan, Control, message. -[woman] Trojan receiving.

[Control] Subject is at front of train, no visible device,

to be detained for questioning. Proceed as planned.

Copy.

Train ETA’s three minutes. Three minutes!

[gasps and pants]

As-salaam ‘alaykum.

[pants and whimpers softly]

I just want to talk.

[she breathes heavily]

That’s all.

[breathes heavily]

I can see you’re as scared as I am.

Miss, I just want to help you.

You don’t have to do this.

-You can change your mind. -[pants]

Don’t do that. Please don’t do that. Don't move. Stay still.

Please, just stay still. Please!

Just stay still. Don’t move. Please. Please.

[starting to sob]

[breathes heavily]

[sobs]

You don’t want to do this.

[breathes heavily]

You don’t look like you do.

Listen, the counter-terrorism unit know about a potential incident on this train.

What I’d like to do is just tell them...

[woman breathes heavily]

...that you’re willing to talk.

Does that sound okay to you?

Just talk... is that a start?

There’s a second bomber, but we’re talking.

Now, write this down.

Young Asian female, equipped with an explosives vest.

Advise SCO19 she’s willing to talk.

Request armed officers hold back from boarding the train...

and that Bomb Disposal and negotiators are deployed as operational priority.

But firstly, right now, evacuate the adjacent carriages.

Yeah, okay.

This is your guard speaking.

Would all passengers in carriage D please make your way

at once into Carriages E and F?

And would all passengers in Carriage C...

Come on. Wake up. We’ve got to move. Come on. Wake up.

-...into carriages D... -Where’s Daddy?

-Wake up. -...and A.

I’ll just have a look and make sure that everyone’s getting out, okay?

All right, I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying here.

It’s okay.

It’s okay.

My name’s David... David Budd.

What’s yours?

[breathes heavily and sniffles]

[whimpers softly] Nadia.

The man that was in here before, is that your husband?

Yeah?

Your husband wants you to die?

You don’t have to be a martyr, Nadia. We can deactivate this device.

We can protect you. You don’t have to see him again if you don't want to.

Hey, Nadia.

Nadia, look at me.

I’m just as scared as you are. I promise.

I’m just bringing my kids back from visiting my mum.

You have children?

Yes. I do, two.

That’s Ella. She’s ten. Charlie, he’s eight.

I just want to take them home to their mum.

[chattering on police radio]

[Control] Trojan, we’ve got a sit rep from the train guard.

There’s an off-duty specialist protection officer on board, PS David Budd.

Received.

Stand by!

-It’s all right. -[pants and whimpers softly]

Everything’s going to be all right.

[siren]

[breathes heavily and grunts]

Stop! Please! Stop! Listen to me. Listen to me.

Why would someone you love want you to kill yourself? You’ve been brainwashed.

He has. You have. And I’d know.

I was in Afghanistan. I saw mates get killed. Nearly got killed myself.

For what? Nothing.

Politicians... cowards and liars. Ours and theirs.

People full of talk but will never spill a drop of their own blood, but you and I,

we’re just collateral damage.

Don’t let them win, Nadia.

-Don’t let them win. -[sobs softly]

[David] Police officer! Don't shoot!

[man] Go.

All right, stay right here.

I’m not going anywhere.

-[distant yelling] -You hear that?

That’s them evacuating everyone from the train.

So, it’s just you and I. It’s just us here. Okay?

[policeman] Armed Police! Armed Police! Get down on the ground!

Put your hands on your head and get down! Get down!

Don't move.

Stay exactly where you are, Nadia. Don’t move, okay? All right.

[Tanner] Armed Police!

PS David Budd! Specialist Protection! Don’t shoot!

We know who you are. Stand clear.

It’s all right. I’m not going anywhere. Just stay very still now, Nadia. Okay?

David, work with me, yeah? You’ve done a great job,

but you’re not OFC here. I am.

I need you to stand down, nice and easy.

[David whispers] I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying with you.

It’s all right. Nothing’s changed. It’s just us talking here.

-Just stay really, really still. Okay? -Move away from the subject.

In position.

[David whispers] It’s okay, Nadia.

[Control] TFC reports sniper in position. Critical shot authorized.

-Received. -[David] Nadia, I need you to trust me.

-[she breathes heavily] -I’m going to speak to this officer.

She’s cooperating. She intends to surrender.

She does not intend to activate the device. Get Expo here.

They’re here. Now, move away.

It’s all right. It’s okay. I’m not going anywhere.

-David, stand clear. -I’m not.

Nadia, you need to show them you’re not going to detonate the device.

When I ask you, I want you to raise your arms to either side.

-Can you do that? -This is your final warning. Stand clear.

[David] Nadia’s going to spread her arms and we’re going to stay put

-and wait for Expo. Do that now. -[Tanner] Trojan OFC to TFC.

PS Budd was given repeated warnings to stand down, but failed to cooperate.

We have no clear shot of the subject.

That's it. Nice and slow. Stay close to me. Come in.

Come in close to me. That’s it. All right, doing really well.

Doing really well, Nadia.

That gun, that’s an MCX carbine. A bullet from that would go through the both of us.

I’m trusting they're not going to shoot one of their own. All right?

You trust me too?

Okay.

Shit. Shit. Oh, come on.

[Control] Sniper one, do you have a clean shot?

Negative.

Stay in there. Don’t go out.

Stay here. Stay here with me.

-You don't have to go anywhere. -Subject required out of toilet for shot.

-Received. -Get Expo here now!

David, I need the subject to step out of the toilet.

[David] She’s going to stay and wait for Expo.

-[Tanner] Come out of the toilet. -Don't move.

-Come out of the toilet. -Stay still for me.

That’s it. You’re doing really good.

Get Expo here!

-Stand aside. -Don’t fire! Do not do this!

You need to come out of the toilet.

-Nadia, don't move. Please don’t move. -Step out of the toilet!

-Don’t do this. Please don’t do this! -David, stand down! Out! Out!

-Stay there. That's it. -Get out of the fucking toilet!

-No! -[Nadia sobs]

[sniper] Come on.

No shot.

All right, don’t shoot. Don’t shoot.

All right, Nadia. Hold tight.

That’s it. Just keep moving. Hold tight.

Okay.

All right.

[Control] Control to Sniper one. Can you execute critical shot?

Negative.

That’s it, Nadia.

Keep moving. Just...

[Control] No clean shot available, repeat no clean shot available.

-[David] That’s it. -Expo.

[Control] Control. Sending Expo in now.

-Expo is coming. -Thank you.

All right, Nadia. I've got you.

[chattering on police radio]

[Karen] Explosives Officer.

[David] Stay calm.

Stay calm.

[Karen] Miss. My name’s Karen. Now, I need you to put your arms down.

Good. Now, turn your palms towards me.

And do not move.

Nadia, I’m going to step to the side. I’ll be right here.

[Karen] I’m moving towards you now.

Nadia... now, I need to ask you...

this object in your hand is the initiation device?

Yes.

Does anyone else have control of this device?

No.

Straighten your arm, please.

Arms up, please.

All the way up.

Good.

Turn around for me, please.

I’m going to remove the belt.

-I need everyone out now. -Open the door.

I’m going to step off the train, then ask you to follow me, all right?

[siren]

Okay, nice and slowly.

Keep your hands where we can see them.

-Stay calm. -[man] Stay still! We'll lift you down!

-Stay still! -[husband] Nadia!

[officer] Don't look over there. Look down at the ground.

-Stop resisting! Go! Go! Let's go. -[siren wails]

It’s over. You’re safe now.

He can’t hurt you. No one’s going to hurt you.

[exhales]

[exhales deeply]

[David] Come on, out you get.

-Thanks, mate. -Oh, God!

-Mummy! -Thank God! Come here.

-Mummy! -Oh! [sobs in relief]

Aw, sweetheart.

Sorry. By the time I’d given a statement I’d...

-[sobs in relief] -[David] Love, it’s all right.

-Thank you. -I’m fine. We’re all fine.

It’s all right.

-Night-night, sweetheart. I love you. -Night-night, Charlie bear. Good night.

[Vicky chuckles] Night-night, sweetheart.

Night, big man.

Night.

-I love you. -I love you, too.

[Vicky giggles]

-[sighs] -They’ll be all right, love.

-I should be heading off. -You don’t have to.

You sure?

You feeling okay?

[sighs] Come on. Let’s talk downstairs.

Oh, for Christ sake, Dave.

Sorry.

Fuck.

I’m sorry.

I’m a fucking idiot. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

[sighs]

[news report #1] Terrorists armed with a suicide vest

boarded the London-bound train just before...

[#2] ...the Prime Minister called a meeting of COBRA...

[#3] No one was injured in the attack on a packed train en route...

[#4] We urge members of the public to remain vigilant.

[#5] ...Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre will assess the threat level...

[Prime Minister] ...resolute in our determination to root out terrorism...

[#6] ...has the raised the threat level to substantial.

[#7] What I’m being told is most worrying

about yesterday’s incident is the exceptionally high level

of sophistication of the explosive vest employed by the would-be attackers.

It would appear most likely that this is the work of a terror cell

and there may be accomplices still at large.

[man] Frank Gardner, our security correspondent.

-[guard] Morning, Sarge. -Cheers, Ken.

...the 1st of October device and the real concern that it represents

a new and devastating threat to national security

has led the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre

to raise the UK’s terror threat level to substantial.

We’re joined now by the Home Secretary, the Right Honorable Julia Montague MP.

[Julia] Before we begin, Nick,

I’d like to pay tribute to the courage

of all members of the police and security service

whose selfless actions prevented an appalling act of terrorism.

[sighs]

-[woman] Bit of a day yesterday. -Mm.

If you need some time off or for me to refer you to counseling--

-I’m fine, thanks, ma’am. -It’s a miracle you’re in one piece.

We’re very lucky the bomber changed her mind.

Hm. Not that she’s saying much, and the husband’s saying nothing.

It seems like when the time came, she froze, and the husband panicked.

Yup.

Great job, David, a credit to the Branch.

Thank you, ma’am.

So far you’ve acted as PPO to visiting foreign dignitaries?

-That's right, ma’am. -The Commissioner’s ordered me to review

specialist protection on senior politicians.

I’m assigning you to a cabinet minister, the Home Secretary.

Very good, ma’am.

It’s a move up.

Yes. Thank you, ma’am.

Good man.

Ma’am.

[chattering in background]

[tap of keyboard]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

My Glock and two magazines, please.

That’s the principal now, Skipper, in the first car. The backup’s behind.

Her driver’s Terry and the PPO’s PC Tom Fenton.

-Ma’am. -Kim.

Ma’am, this is PS Budd, the new PPO.

Pleasure to meet you, ma’am. I was wondering if we could discuss you using

-the underground entrance from now on. -I’m late for a meeting.

Julia likes to be seen.

What’s happening with Andrew Marr?

-I’ll chase them today. -I thought it was all confirmed.

There’s a possibility that Number Ten want the slot.

And when were you planning to tell me?

-I was waiting for the right moment. -You didn’t find it.

[Control] Sierra Zulu Seven-Two from Control.

[Seven-Two] Go ahead, Control, Seven-Two, over.

[Control] Seven-Two, do you have an ETA for Tulip to arrive at Melbourne?

[Seven-Two] Control, traffic is heavy. ETA 12 minutes. Seven-Two, over.

[Control] Seven-Two, call up when one minute away. Control out.

[Rob] Rob Macdonald, special advisor to the Home Secretary. Leave a message.

Hi, it’s me. Um, we need to catch up.

Come to the flat. I'm not sure what time I’ll be home. Depends on the traffic.

Cross the river and take the South Circ.

Terry’s been driving me for three years. I think he can be trusted

to determine the fastest route.

I’ve made a dynamic risk assessment.

Given the current threat level, I’m recommending a diversion.

And how much longer will that take?

Can’t say for certain, ma’am.

In that case, we’ll just take the usual route, please, Terry.

The South Circ, if you don't mind. My job’s to keep you safe, ma’am.

I won’t tell you how to do yours.

No, but you’re happy to make it harder.

[officer] 47-79, we’ll park up across the road and wait.

[Julia breathes heavily and sighs]

If you wouldn’t mind holding here a moment, ma’am.

[inhales and sighs]

[phone rings]

[man] Hi.

I've got nothing in. Are you all right to pick up a takeaway?

-Not a problem. Usual? -[sighs] Sure.

[sighs] May I ask what you’re doing?

-What’s behind this door? -My study.

Seriously, I’m expecting a colleague. I need you to fuck off. No offense.

-[Julia sighs] -None taken.

That's us plotting to build the Death Star. How long is this gonna take?

Can’t say for certain ma’am.

Just get on with it.

[she sighs]

PC Knowles said your name’s Budd.

Yes, ma’am.

The officer who prevented the 1st of October rail attack, that was you?

Yes, ma’am.

[sighs] It’s been a long and trying day. I’m sorry we got off on the wrong foot.

Thank you, ma’am.

All is forgiven?

As you wish, ma’am.

No, really, I’ve been a total cow.

All is forgiven.

[sighs] Thank you.

-[officer] Skip. -[Rob] Evening.

Mr. Macdonald visiting the principal.

[doorbell rings]

[Julia] I can get it.

Oh. Hello.

Evening, sir.

-Rob Macdonald. -Perfect timing. I'm starving.

Come through. Sergeant Budd won’t be long.

Actually, I’m all done, ma’am.

Thank you, Sergeant.

Couple of prawn crackers going if you want some?

No, thank you, sir.

-Have a good evening, ma’am. -[Julia] You, too.

I, uh... uh, got this for later.

Oh, right.

[Rob] It's one of my favorites.

-[David] Evening, lads. -[officer] Skip.

[David] Control, Sierra Zulu Seven-Nine, we’re State 11 handing off to DPG.

[ringing tone]

-[Vicky] Hello. -Hiya, love.

-You okay? -Yeah. I’m just calling for a chat.

[sighs] About what?

-Just calling for a chat, Vic. -What do you want?

What do I want? I was just calling to say hello. Just missed you, that’s all.

[sighs] Don’t start.

Why can’t we just have a chat like two normal adults, Vicky?

This is not normal.

Vicky, I’ve put a lid on it. I’m handling things.

I know what happens when you call late with a few drinks inside you.

-I’ve not even had a few drinks. -[Vicky sighs]

Vicky! Vicky, let’s just have a chat.

Let’s just have a chat.

-Not now. -Vic!

No. Not like this.

Vicky.

[phone bleeps]

Shit!

[news report #1] There is a heightened police presence at airports, railway...

[#2] ...rail attack has triggered a hunt for accomplices.

Counter terrorism officers believe the cell...

[#3] ...debate on national security has the potential to split the government.

The Prime Minister, considered a moderate...

[#4] The Home Secretary’s efforts to enhance surveillance through

a new Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill,

the so-called, RIPA-18...

Home Secretary, two minutes till I take you through to the studio.

Thank you.

I bet the PM pulled out because he knew you’d do a much better job.

Sounds like a reason not to pull out.

-Your decaf. -[squeals]

-Oh, my God! Oh, I’m so sorry -Christ!

Shit.

-[giggles] -Shut up.

-I’m sorry. -Give her your blouse.

-It’ll never fit. -[Rob] Oh, for God’s sake!

[Chanel] Give her yours, then.

I don’t wear blouses, do I? Can we dry it out?

[Julia] Don’t be ridiculous! There’s no time! [sighs]

-Fresh on this morning, ma’am. -[Rob] You’ve got to be kidding me!

My shirts are altered to fit over my ballistic vest.

The chest-to-waist ratio should be compatible.

Well, don’t all stand around gawping.

And, you, fuck off and organize Sergeant Budd a new shirt.

[Julia sighs]

You have to tuck it under your jacket, ma’am.

Thank you.

[grunts]

Some privacy?

Yeah, of course.

Home Secretary, just how anxious should we be about this terrorist threat?

-Is there another one around the corner? -We are a target.

We can’t be complacent.

Now, I am committed to supporting our security services

by giving them greater powers to confront greater threats.

The government is intent on forcing through

a beefed-up Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act this year,

RIPA-18, as it’s being dubbed,

spearheaded by you, but critics are calling it a Snoopers’ Charter,

to monitor phone calls, emails and social media without judicial review.

Andrew, only those intent on acts of violence have anything to fear.

The Prime Minister was quoted as saying:

"Lessons need to be learned from our military interventions

in the Middle East." So, what might those lessons be?

I can’t see any justification for believing

the Taliban would govern Afghanistan in peace and harmony,

or Iraqi insurgents would ever have formed a stable democracy,

or ISIS would ever form a state with which the world could have diplomatic relations.

And, Andrew, I certainly do not miss the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.

So, what are the lessons to be learned?

The Prime Minister has been very clear on how we deal with the present

and build a more secure future.

That doesn’t require apologizing for the past.

I can’t see any justification for believing

the Taliban would govern Afghanistan in peace and harmony,

or Iraqi insurgents would ever have formed a stable democracy or...

[voice scrubs]

...and build a more secure future.

That doesn’t require apologizing for the past.

[voice scrubs]

...doesn’t require apologizing for the past.

[voice scrubs]

That doesn’t require apologizing for the past.

[voice scrubs]

...doesn’t require apologizing for the past.

[voice scrubs]

...apologizing for the past. ...apologizing for the past.

...apologizing for the past. ...apologizing for the past.

...apologizing for the past. ...apologizing for... [echoing to silence]

[background chattering]

[woman] Hello, reception. Where?

Yes, here he is! Security, they need you upstairs! Quick!

Clear back!

[short, sharp breaths]

[Chanel] How can you treat me like that? You had it in for me from day one!

-Oh, stand there like a smug prat! -Sergeant Budd, thank you.

Sergeant Budd, would you mind escorting Ms. Dyson from the building?

...interview your little girl for a job that you don’t even know what I do

on a daily basis! Have you taken the time? No! Because you are that arrogant!

-Get back in your office, narcissist! -A cab's coming for her.

Oh, a cab! Keep your cab!

-You narcissistic, smug prick. -Sorry about this.

Good luck with your interview, darling! I wouldn’t work here if I’m fucking paid!

-Miss, will you come with me, please? -No.

[Chanel sighs]

Come on. Let’s talk about it downstairs, all right?

[exhales] Fuck.

[exhales deeply]

[exhales deeply] Can you not stand so close to me, please?

[sighs]

Yeah, I’m just coming out on to the street now.

Thanks.

Bit calmer? If you don’t want to deal with them,

I can sort out sending on your personal belongings.

Thank you.

What happened?

Uh, they’ve started interviewing candidates for my job.

Didn’t even tell me they were giving me the push. So...

They didn’t say why?

There’s no "they." It’s just her. Sociopath.

God help anyone who sees through her.

-I thought they were sending you a cab. -Yeah, I don’t need their shitty cab.

-Sierra Zulu Seven-Nine, Lavender inbound. -A breakdown of the additional powers--

Mind if I steal your boss for a minute, Rob?

Uh, sure. See you inside.

Interesting TV interview. You must be very proud.

[Julia] I’d really like to get into the Chamber, Roger.

Planning on hijacking the counter terror debate for shameless self-promotion?

-Is there a point to this conversation? -You're not returning my calls.

Pardon me, ma’am, I’d prefer if you moved indoors.

You work for us, Plod, so wind your neck in.

I’m the fucking Chief Whip. When I call, you answer.

We claim the center ground, but you’re heading off-piste.

The PM can count on my full support.

Bullshit. He’s weakened. You’re making a move for the leadership.

Sir, ma’am, I do need you both to move inside.

Can’t you call your monkey off? Throw him some nuts.

I’m mixed-race.

[ringing tone]

-[John] Hi. -John. Roger Penhaligon.

-You okay? -No. Not great.

I need to record my side of a conversation with one of the PPOs.

Are you... bi-racial?

No, ma’am.

Right, where were we?

[Rob] Right, great.

This is a summary of the limitations in existing legislation.

-All clear, ma’am. -Oh.

Sergeant Budd.

Your shirt.

Thank you, ma’am.

I’m sorry about Chanel. She took her dismissal badly

and my staff thought you’d be the best person to deal with it.

If you can talk someone out of blowing up a train...

-Want one? -On duty, ma’am.

Soft drinks in the fridge.

No. Thank you, ma’am.

Do you prefer David or Dave?

I answer to both, ma’am.

You won’t have heard yet,

but we are going to charge the male 1st-of-October attacker.

He appears to have plausible links to Islamist terrorists,

though I’m not at liberty to say more.

That's good news, thanks, ma’am.

And thanks to you, his wife’s alive to assist with our inquiries.

It seems I’m constantly finding reasons to compliment you.

Not quite constantly.

Is there a Mrs. Budd?

Yes, ma’am. Vicky.

-We have two children. -Oh, what are their names?

-Ella and Charlie. -Oh.

Your shifts... must make home life difficult.

-I'm sorry. That was private. I... -No, it’s...

You’d know, ma’am, all these hours you work.

[chuckles] Goes with the territory.

Did you always want to be a politician? I hope you don’t mind me asking that.

No...

I was a criminal barrister.

I witnessed at first-hand how the causes of crime often have as much to do

with a person’s upbringing and social circumstances.

I sought a role in which I could make a real difference.

I’m keeping you.

May I ask, ma’am...

that interview you did on TV, did you mean what you said?

I’m sorry?

About the Middle East.

See, I don’t only say what the people want to hear.

I’m about doing the right thing and making the hard choices.

The thing is, David/Dave, I don’t need you to vote for me...

only to protect me.

Rest assured, ma’am. I’ll do what’s required.

Ma’am.

[door closes]

[officer] Skipper.

[sighs]

Sorry, I was just getting ready for work.

I just wanted to apologize for the other night.

Okay.

I was just having a round of toast, but I can make you some?

-You’re all right, love. I’m fine. -[chattering on TV]

Are the kids not up yet?

-They’re all right, aren’t they? -Sleepover.

Uh, both of them?

RIPA-18 will give them that support.

-[MPs shout out on TV] -Vic?

Look. Don’t take this the wrong way. I know you’re disappointed to miss the kids,

but maybe that’s why it's best that you call ahead if you come around.

I was hoping we could talk.

Why?

-I’ve said I’m sorry. -Yeah, you always are.

You need help, Dave.

I need a job that pays the bills, Vic.

Yes, and I keep covering for you, so that you can keep it,

but I’ve stopped being able to stand back and watch.

-You are getting worse, Dave. -Love, I’m sorry,

but we can work through this.

I’ve met someone.

He was here...

overnight?

Yes.

-Still here? -No.

Look, I... I was gonna tell you.

You farm our kids out so you can have your night together?

They’re with their school friends. They’ve had a lovely time.

-Do they know? -They think that he’s a friend.

[Dave groans loudly]

Dave?

Dave?

Let’s not get divorced yet.

Oh, God, no, we’re not that serious, or anything. It’s early days.

In case anything happens to me at work...

you’ll still get the pension... if we’re legally married.

...that the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 simply does not go far enough.

-Hi, Chanel. -Yeah, sorry.

-I hope here’s okay. -Oh, fine.

Can I get you anything?

-No, please, let me-- -Uh, maybe later.

Look, I know,

but you just always seemed open to the wider possibilities of a story.

-Not one to regurgitate the press release. -Thanks very much.

And for getting in touch.

Julia Montague’s the woman of the hour, so my editor didn’t take much persuading.

"Woman of the hour?" Talk about an understatement.

You weren't able to give me much detail over the phone.

Yeah, that's right. Well, I just want to stop everyone getting

carried away with this idea that she’s such a brilliant politician.

-How would you describe her? -A sociopath.

The most dangerous person in the country.

More dangerous than the people she keeps calling "enemies of freedom."

-How’s she dangerous? -She’s got an agenda.

To heighten fear, to destroy debate... and to seize power.

What evidence do you have to substantiate these claims?

I’ve worked for two years in the Home Office,

most of that time in daily contact with Julia Montague.

You were fired, Chanel.

Yeah.

In Whitehall, this isn’t a story.

"Aide gets fired. Aide badmouths minister."

I’m trying to explain how Julia’s different.

You're not explaining how you’re different from other disgruntled former employees.

You’ve got my number and email if you find something concrete.

I hope things work out for you.

[mutters] Fuck off.

Are you getting in? Do you want me to call someone?

-It's the last thing I want you to do. -Open invitation.

[indistinct chattering]

[Andy] ...opened my eyes...

For decades, the West has been inflicting suffering on the poor and powerless.

The war in the desert, in the oil fields...

we’ve brought it back to the streets of Britain.

There’s kids growing up over here,

all they hear is what’s been done to families and friends over there.

Who can blame them... if they want to push back?

[murmurs of agreement]

And when they push back, our politicians act like it’s come from nowhere...

so they can pass laws restricting our freedoms

and order new attacks against the so-called terrorists.

And guess what, the cycle of violence goes on.

Always wondered if you’d turn up some time.

Soapbox is not really my thing, mate.

That’s not how you were in Helmand.

That was a crazy time out there.

Trying to put that behind me. I’m making a go of Civvy Street.

Put PTSD on your job application, who’s going to hire you?

Right?

Just because it’s not visible...

Mate, you can’t beat it on your own.

The counseling sessions... they’re really helpful.

-There’s a bunch of us now, good-- -I’m good. Thanks.

[clears throat] So, what are you doing now?

Police.

Doing what?

-Specialist protection. -Government ministers.

[sighs] Are you fucking kidding me? You’re protecting those wankers?

You turn up after all this time and tell me this shit. What’s that about?

You've got a fucking nerve, mate.

I knew you’d understand.

Understand... what?

You said it out in Helmand.

You say a lot of stuff when you’ve seen your best mates blown to pieces.

If you ever found yourself right beside one of those bastards that sent us there,

you’d just close your eyes and pull the trigger?

You’d still have a face.

I’d still have a family.

Doors and seatbelts.

Little bird told me you were Johnny on the spot at the 1st of October?

Yes, sir.

Looks like the Home Secretary couldn’t be in safer hands.

Lavender outbound.

Sergeant David Budd, Metropolitan Police.

British Transport Police have put out an alert on a suicide bomber

attempting to board a London-bound service.

[breathes heavily]

Don't do that! Please, don't do that! Just stay still.

[yelling]

[policeman] Get down on the ground! Put your hands on your head! Get down!

Nadia, stay right there. Don't move. Don't move.

-Step out of the toilet! -No!

-[Nadia whimpers] [David] Okay.

Great job. Credit to the Branch. I'm assigning you to a cabinet minister.

Very good, ma'am.

Home Secretary, just how anxious should we be about this terrorist threat?

Only those intent on acts of violence have anything to fear.

The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 simply does not go far enough.

You're making a move for the leadership.

That interview you did on telly, did you mean what you said?

The thing is, David/Dave, I don't need you to vote for me,

only to protect me.

[Julia] I can't see any justification for believing the Taliban

would govern Afghanistan in peace and harmony,

or Isis would ever form a state with which the world could have diplomatic relations.

That doesn't require apologizing for the past.

[voice scrubs]

...doesn't require apologizing for the past.

-[Vicky] You need help, Dave. -I'm sorry, but we can work through this.

I've met someone.

Shit!

Put PTSD on your job application, who's going to hire you?

You said it out in Helmand. If you found yourself beside one of those bastards

that sent us out there, you'd just close your eyes and pull the trigger.

Like a prince and a princess getting a lift in, eh?

Everyone else is already in, so in you go quickly, all right?

Come on, now, Charlie, we had that messing about at home.

Let's not make it worse, please.

[Ella] He says they call him names. He hates it.

What have I told you about crying? Never show weakness.

They only hurt you more. Right, big man, in you go.

Charlie, in we go, please.

-[sniffles] -[David] Good boy.

[children playing in distance]

[sighs]

[phone buzzes]

Sorry, ma'am.

[phone buzzes]

Sorry, ma'am, I need to keep it on for work.

[phone buzzes]

I think you'd better answer that before it drives us all up the wall.

Apologies, ma'am.

-Hi, Look-- -[Vicky] What were you thinking?

I just got called in by his teacher! He's really upset!

-I'm at work. I'll call you back. -Please don't hang up on me! Please!

I can't talk right now.

The special school, they haven't got a place for Charlie.

-He's got to stay at Heath Bank. -Shit. Look, I'm working.

But we'll find the person to talk to and we'll find the right school.

-They said it'll be at least a year. -I'm really sorry, love.

Apologies again, ma'am.

Seven-Nine Lavender entering the building.

[Kim] Received.

[indistinct chattering]

Morning, Sergeant.

Morning, sir.

Right, someone screwed up the time? I thought this conference was at ten.

No, it's still on. Some kind of private meeting.

Oh.

We've intelligence on a possible terrorist attack on a London school.

Oh, my God.

The cell's comms are encrypted but metadata suggests a pattern

of reconnoitering schools.

Feed these through to the police when they arrive.

Ordinarily I would,

but one of the schools threw up a link to a serving police officer.

His kids attend.

David Budd.

-It may be a coincidence. -Yes, it may.

Or a terrorist cell's obtained confidential information

on the officer who foiled the 1st of October attack

and this is their plan for revenge.

In my experience, information leakage occurs for one of two reasons.

Either police officers fail to communicate securely...

or an officer susceptible to bribery or blackmail

is responsible for the disclosure.

If there's a police leak, we should keep this to ourselves.

Thank you.

And taking specific steps to protect the school in question

may redirect the terrorists towards a different course of action,

action we're unprepared for.

We'll tighten security around the schools and hold back the reason why.

-[Sampson] Mike. -Anne.

Tahir, how are you settling in?

Great. Thanks again for bringing me into the team.

The press have been editorializing on RIPA-18.

Maybe Tahir could set up an interview defending the policy.

Couldn't you argue that defending would validate the criticism?

I agree. Since when did we start doing the opposition's job for them?

-We'd be an improvement. -[chuckles] Right.

We all know everyone.

Mike Travis, Minister of State for Counter-Terrorism.

Stephen Hunter-Dunn, Director General of the Security Service.

And Anne Sampson, Commander of NPS, Counter-Terrorism Branch.

So, perhaps we could start with an update on 1/10.

The bomber herself claims to have been coerced by the husband,

and she remains too intimidated to reveal much.

And who are their accomplices? Where'd they get the bomb?

-What are their targets? -Inquiries are ongoing.

Clock's ticking.

Maybe my officers would have more success.

Come off it, Stephen.

We're happy to receive intelligence but it's our investigation.

Look, I think we might need to take a step back, mm?

Police jurisdiction's clear.

Mike's right. Let's move on.

[sighs]

[ringing tone]

-[Vicky] Hi. -Hey. Sorry about earlier.

-Just calling to catch the kids. -Right. Nothing about school, okay?

-Try not to upset Charlie. -Sure, sure.

Ella, Charlie, Daddy's on the phone.

Quick one, mind, it's well late.

Yeah, sorry, that's my fault.

Come on, you two. Say quick night-night to daddy.

-[Ella] Night-night. -Night, sweetheart, love you.

-[Vicky] Come on, Charlie. -[Charlie] Night, Daddy.

Night, big man, love you.

[Vicky] All right, you two, off to bed now, okay?

I'm sorry, I want to get them both down for the night.

I could come over tomorrow. We could go and see the head.

[sighs] What's the point, Dave? We've tried that.

Unless you've got a magic wand.

-I'm sorry. -[Vicky sighs]

-Night-night. -[phone bleeps]

[distant sirens wail]

[news report #1] The Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command, SO15,

have been pursuing links to the 1st of October attackers.

[news report #2] The Metropolitan Police have expressed fears other devices...

[news report #3] The UK threat level, set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre,

stands at substantial...

[news report #4] Accomplices to the 1st of October bombers may still be at large.

[tires squeal]

Ma'am.

-This way, ma'am. -Thanks.

-Ma'am, thanks for coming down. -What's going on?

Multiple subject activity on WhatsApp. Metadata fits a cell on our watch list.

-Everything else is encrypted. -Location?

South London. We've got lumps on their cars.

We'll share it with the Security Service. Maybe worth getting their take on it.

No. Not just yet. We've got MASTS in situ?

Yes, they're reporting to the TFC. Subject's on the move. One team visual.

Right.

They're taking no chances... driving like my gran.

Alpha Two-Three, Brixton Road. Northbound, speed two-five.

Continuing north.

En route to high-value targets in the Lambeth-Waterloo areas.

Okay, let's mobilize SCO19 to holding locations...

for Waterloo Station/Southbank targets.

-Copy that. -[Officer] Sir.

Order from SFC. Trojan to SE1, hold locations.

Stewart's Road, northbound.

West on Ascalon Street.

Back up.

That's good.

[bleeping]

Received. MASTS unit stationary,

standing by for further activity from subject vehicle inside an industrial unit.

What are you doing?

It's them! Shit. Go! Stand by.

Subjects are now driving a white LGV.

Repeat, subjects are now driving a white LGV.

Subjects are now en route in an LGV.

DAF seven-and-a-half tonner,

Foxtrot Echo Zero Eight Uniform Yankee Oscar.

Now they're in an untracked vehicle, possible VBIED.

We can't lose them! Alert all ARVs in the area to assist.

If MASTS can't achieve a natural stop, I'm authorizing enforced stop.

Order from SFC, all ARVs in vicinity of Alpha Two-Three, north of Brixton...

[officer] Hold back. Hold back.

-Subject vehicle diverted to Camberwell. -Camberwell? Shit!

Nearest ARVs are en route, ma'am, but the MASTS vehicle's still closest.

TFC's re-spinning the wheel.

[tires squeal]

[officer] Christ. They're onto us. Carlisle Street. Speed three-five.

[tires squeal]

Authorize MASTS and ARVs to carry out enforced stop

with critical shot authorized, if required.

[Control] MASTS and ARVs authorized for enforced stop and critical shot.

Received.

-[siren blares] -Go, go, go!

[engine revs]

Go, go, go, go, go!

[siren wails]

[tires squeal]

[car alarms whoop]

[children chattering and shouting happily]

[approaching siren and car alarms wail]

-[excited chattering] -Move it, move it! Move it!

-[children screaming] -Let's go! Keep moving! Move quickly!

[screaming]

[engine revs, siren wails]

You go in!

-[engine revs] -[tires squeal and siren wails]

-Now! Now! Quick as you can. -[screaming]

[siren wails]

-[gunshots] -Hurry up!

-[gunshots] -[children screaming]

[car alarms and dog barking]

-[children yell] -Shh! It's all right. It's all right.

Uniform Oscar Zero-Six,

shots fired, shots fired. Subject vehicle stopped. Vehicle stopped!

OFC confirms from MASTS and ARV, subject vehicle under control.

Shots fired.

[exhales deeply]

Armed police! Everyone okay?

We're okay! We're okay!

[car alarms and police sirens]

I don't see an IED trigger! Anyone see an IED trigger?

Stay there!

[screaming]

[Mike] Two subjects and three officers dead at the scene,

five officers injured, two severely.

-That's right, isn't, Amit? -Yes.

-My God. -The full facts are still emerging.

No organization's claimed responsibility.

-[Kim] Seven-Nine, go back to back on two. -Seven-Nine on two.

Skipper, it's just come up on the box.

An IED took out a MASTS Team and an ARV in Camberwell.

Jesus.

Three officers down, more in intensive care.

No idea of the target yet?

No, the incident occurred near a school in South London.

Uh, Heath Bank Primary School.

Shit.

-You know the school? -No.

Fortunately, no casualties amongst the pupils or staff.

I need to get moving. The PM's chairing COBRA in half an hour.

And J-TAC have moved the threat level to severe.

I'll pull everything together from the Security Services

and SO15 as it comes in.

-Seven-Nine, Lavender on the move. -[Kim] Received, Seven-Nine.

-Have you heard yet? -Over the radio, ma'am.

Deepest sympathies to those officers' families.

Strictest confidence, but you've got a right to know.

-It happened near your children's school. -What?

None of the pupils were hurt, but you should call your wife and kids.

-Thank you very much, ma'am. -[lift bell bleeps]

David, till we know more, we've moved your family to a safe house.

I'm afraid the budget doesn't stretch to two.

Thank you, ma'am. I'm glad we're all under one roof.

I've already spoke to them. Everyone's fine.

Good. But you understand the question it raises.

I don't get how they could know which officer was responsible

for the 1st of October, unless there's been some kind of leak.

We don't know. We're investigating.

Meanwhile, we have to take the view, if there's any risk, any risk at all,

of you being a target,

it puts not only you and your family in jeopardy, but also your colleagues,

maybe even the principal and her staff.

I'm sorry, David, but you're restricted to desk duty, pending reassignment.

Oh, come on. I'm not the one who's fucked up. The leak, they should get punished.

This isn't a punishment, David.

Ma'am.

[knocks]

No worries. In you come, Sarge.

Thanks for coming over.

-I'm just glad you're all right. -The whole thing's terrifying.

[sighs]

-Kids, your dad's here. -[both] Daddy!

Hey, you two. Hey. [grunts softly]

-[chuckles] -You all right?

-[both] Yeah. -[Ella] There was a big bang.

-Yeah. -[Charlie] My ears hurt.

-Are you all right now? -Mm-hm.

Mum and Dad are just gonna have a chat next door, okay?

Okay.

They've evacuated the school. Everyone is terrified.

Uh... one of the coppers said it could be that this is all about the train attack.

Problem is there's too many out there with a big mouth.

You've lost some colleagues today. I get that.

-Dave, it could've been your own children. -I know.

If you're going to be like this, you should go.

-Not if the three of you are in danger. -You think they'll try again?

I don't know, do I?

[door opens and closes]

[clock ticks]

[clock ticking becomes distorted gunfire]

[sighs]

[indistinct chattering and phones ring in background]

-How's it going, Skipper? -Aye, brilliant.

-It's great fun organizing duty rotas. -Maybe I could make you a cuppa.

Kim, shake a leg.

Oh, sorry, skip. I'll catch you later.

Sorry, Sarge.

-[Andy] Do you know any of 'em? -[David] Not really.

[Andy] Poor bastards.

[newscaster] The home secretary, Julia Montague...

Had enough of them over the years, too many.

[Julia] The government will do all in our power to bring the perpetrator...

Sanctimonious bitch.

And I call upon my parliamentary colleagues

to pass my strengthened Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill.

She's doing what they all do, exploit the situation to get more power.

She said shit like that during the war. Just a sniveling little MP back then,

trying to join in the big boys' game.

Sign a piece of paper, 100 blokes get killed.

But who suffers? Her kind couldn't give a shit.

I can't believe you protect them.

Did.

What's that, mate?

I'm a security risk.

They've put Vic and the kids in a safe house.

Shit.

I can live with being in the line of fire, made a career out of it, but my family?

They were always...

home safe.

That's the way it works.

Even in Civvy Street, it's the same thing. They're in it for themselves.

They couldn't give a shit about a bloke like you taking the risks.

You're the mug that suffers the consequences.

How do you reckon she'd feel... if she got a taste?

Taste of what?

Suffering the consequences.

We were able to recover remnants of the device.

It was operated by a timer,

which we assume the bombers activated

when they made their final charge towards the school.

The explosive employed was triacetone triperoxide,

the composition of which proved a match to the one employed on the 1st of October.

Both devices were extremely powerful, with sophisticated mechanisms.

The reason for targeting the school, has that become any clearer yet?

It's possible someone who witnessed the 1st of October rail attack,

a civilian member of staff maybe, a member of the public,

we don't know... has links to the terrorists.

Right.

Much more likely, the leak was internal.

There's no evidence for that.

[Julia] Either you've got a security breach in your own ranks,

or your officers failed to detect another accomplice involved in 1/10.

Added to which, your surveillance operation failed

to detect the subjects had hired a light goods vehicle.

-If there are any learnings-- -Please don't say "learnings."

Since you haven't announced any new leads, I'm assuming you haven't got any.

We're still putting together a picture of events surrounding the attack.

And if you succeed, will you share that information?

-Yes, of course, Home-- -When it became clear the subjects were

gathering to carry out an operation, did the police share that information?

-With respect, I don't see how that-- -I'm starting to lose confidence

in the police's ability to make progress, so, I'd like to take up Stephen's proposal

for the Security Service to assume a role in interviewing the 1/10 bombers.

-What? -Thank you.

Home Secretary, you are setting a dangerous precedent.

We agreed, I think... This can only be a police matter.

Uh, we all welcome intelligence guidance from the Security Service.

[Sampson] Exactly. Thank you. My officers and I are determined to--

The one officer who actually successfully averted a threat,

he's the one you people want to remove from my protection team!

Sends completely the wrong message.

Um, that isn't my department.

No, your department is Counter-Terrorism,

the most expensive area of policing, and it's failing.

-Home Secretary, I don't understand why-- -I think we're done here.

Fuck you, Stephen.

It's all right.

[knocking]

That all got a bit heated in there.

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, Julia.

The security guidance regarding PS Budd's removal is completely justified.

I'm a target regardless.

Anne Sampson's right. I hope you're not serious about giving more responsibility

to the Security Service. They're less transparent, less accountable.

It sets a dangerous precedent.

The real danger's to our national security.

[indistinct chatter on police radio]

Yes, Mum. Yes, I know, but they're fine, I promise you. Hang on.

Give me two seconds. Kids, I'm not going to ask you again!

-Breakfast's ready! Come down! -[knocking]

Mum, I'm going to give you a call back, all right? Okay.

Post from your home address. Don't worry. It all gets X-rayed.

Oh, thanks.

[kids chatter in background]

-[Charlie] Mum! -[Ella] Keep quiet.

Dave! Dave!

-[Dave] Yup! -Look!

Charlie, come downstairs! Look at this. Charlie, it's good news!

Come down! They said he can start after half-term. Isn't that brilliant?

-Someone's pulled strings. -How would they know about Charlie?

-I'm not sure. -It doesn't matter. It's brilliant.

Charlie, you know that nice school that's going to help you with your reading?

-They've said you can go there. -[Charlie] Really?

Isn't that great? Yeah? Aw!

Come on. Shall we tell your sister, yeah?

-[Charlie] Ella! -[chuckles]

[door]

David.

Your line manager doesn't appreciate your attitude to administrative duties.

They are not my strong suit.

Just as well you're being restored to active duty at the Home Office, then.

-Thank you, ma'am. -Not me.

Seems like you've made friends in high places.

That's it. Piss off.

Ma'am.

Ah. Here you are.

[indistinct chattering]

Hi. Look, Julia's expecting you. I'll take you right through.

Cheers, Mike.

Uh, simpler if it's just Stephen and I. You don't mind, do you, Mike?

Uh, no, okay. Carry on.

Home Secretary, how are you today?

Better than the bastards trying to blow us to kingdom come.

I've got a first-rate team on the 1/10 bombers.

We're confident we'll identify--

[Julia] Take a seat, Stephen. I knew I could count on you.

Just holding up my end of the bargain.

There isn't a listening device in this office, is there?

You tell me.

Given the sensitivity of the material...

we've got to be meticulous in our corroboration of the facts.

It's good to have you back, PS Budd.

Thank you, ma'am.

-Cheers, Kim. -See you over there, skip.

Sierra Zulu, Seven-Nine, Lavender on the move.

[background chattering]

[Rob] I hope this is okay.

Oh, good choice. Haven't been here in ages.

You've just been under so much stress lately.

Don't worry. We'll order some wine as soon as Indira and Sanjeev arrive.

Not like them to be late. Text them. Make sure they haven't gone to the wrong place.

I was, uh... worried you'd cancel.

They're not coming?

Sorry.

It's okay.

-Would you care to see the menu? -No, thank you.

[Rob inhales]

Um...

Eh, probably best if we all reschedule.

I'm sorry, I should have told you, but let's have some nice food,

a couple of drinks on me.

This feels weird.

[Kim] Change of plan. Lavender on the move.

-Have you home in no time, ma'am. -Great.

[sighs] I've got nothing in. Do you mind if we stop on the way home, David?

Certainly.

This is very generous of you, ma'am.

I'm just pleased you didn't veto the idea for security reasons.

You're pleased my night out was an unmitigated disaster?

No.

It's just there's risk with being seen out in public.

Easy to say when you're a smug married.

-Sorry, have I put my foot in it? -I'm separated.

Mm.

I hope I didn't cause offense.

-I must have misunderstood. -The phone call with my wife?

Mm.

I've made the mistake of judging by my own standards.

By the end of my marriage,

we were incapable of speaking to each other with anything other than contempt.

Don't worry, we have our moments.

-I just try to put the kids first. -Mm. And how are they faring?

We had good news about my son's schooling.

Mm. I'm glad.

If you were involved, ma'am, my family's grateful.

I went into politics to help people.

[Julia inhales deeply]

Well, you don't want to keep the backup vehicle waiting

-and I've got work to do. -Yes, of course, I'll just clean this up.

Unless you fancy a cuppa.

I should make it.

Kettles, they can be quite the danger in untrained hands.

-[breathes heavily] -[kettle boils]

[journalists shout]

[man #1] Planning to move in, Home Secretary?

Lavender and Indigo inbound.

[man #2] Are we facing a state of emergency, Home Secretary?

[man #1] Is this your new address, Home Secretary?

[clamor]

-Want a heads-up? -Nope.

PM's pissed off. Thinks you're hogging the limelight.

Naturally, I disabused him of the idea that you'd attempt a leadership challenge.

-Everyone's ready, Prime Minister. -Thanks, Roger.

-Morning, everyone. -[all] Morning.

[man] Anyone see the Arsenal game?

I hope the family's coping with the move. It must be very disruptive.

They're all a bit anxious. I can't deny it, ma'am.

Sorry to hear that.

-I hope you don't mind me asking, ma'am. -Yes?

How do you know the name of my kids' school?

It must have appeared in the immediate incident report.

Sorry, ma'am, I don't mean to argue. The attack occurred a few minutes before.

It seems a bit early for the connection to be made.

It must have been in relation to your son..

from asking a colleague to organize his transfer to a specialist school.

-David, let's-- -[gunshots]

-[she screams] -Down, down! Go, go!

[she screams]

[engine revs and tires squeal]

[tires screech and horn blares]

[bullets hit car]

[breathes heavily]

-[Julia screams] -[gunshot]

Ma'am, stay down! The bullets can pierce the windows but not the armored metal.

[whimpers]

Control. Sierra Zulu Seven-Nine, status zero, Thornton Circus.

Control, Sierra Zulu Seven-Nine, status zero, Thornton Circus.

Lavender is TA. Repeat Lavender is TA.

[Control] Seven-Nine, Control, received.

All call signs proceed to Thornton Circus urgently.

[breathes heavily]

Four-Seven. Seven-Nine, back to back on two.

-[over radio] Received, Seven-Nine. -We've lost Terry. We'll wait for backup.

-Suggest you do the same. -Wilco.

[groans]

-[gunshot, bullet ricochets] -[squeals]

It's okay, ma'am! The bullets can't get through the armor plating!

-It's okay. It's okay. -[panicked breathing]

-Control, Seven-Nine Sierra Zulu. -[Control] Go ahead, Seven-Nine.

We need armed support and air ops to the scene as operational priority.

TFCs deploying to the scene. Area being cordoned off and unarmed held back.

-ARVs en route. ETA two minutes. -Control, Seven-Nine, received.

Two minutes, ma'am. Sit tight. You're going to be fine.

You're doing really well, ma'am. You're doing great.

-[gunfire] -[screams]

It's okay. It's okay, ma'am. It's okay. It's okay.

-[gasps and whimper] -[gunshot]

It's okay. It's okay. It's all right. It's okay.

[whimpers]

-Stay right down, ma'am. -[squeals]

-[gunshot] -[breathes heavily]

-Control, sit rep, Sierra Zulu Seven-Nine. -Go ahead.

Shooter's located on roof of Pascoe House,

1-0-0-0 feet south of Thornton Circus. Single shooter only.

-Received, Seven-Nine. -Where are those ARVs?

Area lockdown ongoing. ETA two minutes.

You already said two minutes!

[squeals]

Ma'am, I need to get you to safety. Ma'am, this is what I do. Trust me.

[pants and whimpers]

[grunts]

-Four-Seven, back to back on two. -[Four-Seven] Go ahead, Seven-Nine.

We're sitting ducks here. Lavender on the move.

-Shit, what? -Follow, close formation.

-Here we go, ma'am. -[engine revs]

-[whimpers] -Stay right down, ma'am.

-[groans] -The roof armor will protect us, ma'am.

[gunshot]

You're doing great, ma'am. Soon he won't have a line of sight.

[horn blares]

-We're safe now, ma'am. Hold tight. -[tires screech]

Don't move, ma'am.

You'll be fine.

[whimpers and squeals] No, No. No, no!

-Take care of the P. -Sarge!

Armed police! Get down! Stay down! Remain calm!

I need access to the roof.

Stay down! Remain calm! Officers will be arriving!

This way.

I need the roof.

Through there and up.

[breathes heavily]

Armed police!

[exhales]

It's over, mate.

[sighs]

It's over.

[breathes heavily]

For me.

Not for you.

You've got to finish the job.

I'm fucked.

Don't.

[breathes heavily]

-Someone's got to stop her. Get it done. -Don't!

[no sound]

[no sound]

[Kim] Area confirmed secure. Lavender safe to travel.

Escorting her out the building now.

I'm very sorry about Terry, ma'am.

[sirens]

[news report #1] The attack on the Home Secretary began with shots

fired from Pascoe House, an office building undergoing...

[news report #2] ...Secretary's vehicle, claiming the life of her driver,

who's been named as Terence Foyer.

[news report #3] ...Montague was unhurt in the attack and is in a secure location...

[news report #4] ...the assassination attempt on Home Secretary Julia Montague,

the UK threat level is being raised to critical.

[news report #5] ...Police Commissioner says recent terror events pose

an unprecedented threat to national security.

[phone buzzes]

PS Budd.

Service entrance just round to the right, Sarge.

[chattering on police radio]

No complaints about the surroundings, but...

it's unsettling not to be allowed back into your own home.

Following an attempt on your life, ma'am, protection measures have been ramped up.

And do you think I'm still in danger?

It'll turn out to be a nut-job acting alone.

SO15 don't know anything about the gunman?

I can't imagine they're telling me more than you, ma'am.

I've got a meeting in the morning with Stephen Hunter-Dunn.

So... maybe the Security Service can shed more light.

Why were the police held back from entering the square?

It wasn't safe for unarmed officers to go in.

No, I don't mean them. The ARVs.

We were under attack, you, me, members of the public. Terry was blown apart.

-Ma'am, are you all right? -Who would give that order?

To hold resources back and leave us in the line of fire?

-I can't imagine that's what went on. -Just answer the question, please, David.

That would be an executive officer at SO15.

Anne Sampson.

I can't imagine the ARVs were being held back without good reason.

-First priority's preservation of life. -I was being shot at!

[inhales] Yes, that would suit her, me being smashed to pieces.

Ma'am, why don't you sit down and let me take care of this?

[glass clatters, she gasps]

[she sighs]

[sighs]

I'm not the Queen.

You're allowed to touch me.

[sighs softly]

[breathes heavily]

[door opens and footsteps]

[door closes]

[woman #1] Home Secretary, is there a concern you're still a target?

For security reasons, I'm afraid I can't disclose any specifics.

[woman #2] Any comment on the assassination attempt?

Only that I'm extremely grateful

for the swift and courageous actions of the security services.

And I'm deeply thankful there weren't more casualties.

[woman #3] How are you feeling, Home Secretary?

I'm feeling ready to return to my mission of fighting the enemies of democracy...

and I'm undaunted in my determination

to pass the RIPA-18 legislation needed to get that job done.

Not stage-managed at all. [soft chuckle]

Who's she trying to kid?

Oh, yeah. No. 10.

[sighs]

Yeah, uh, Mike Travis. Um... could you put me through

to Anne Sampson's office at New Scotland Yard?

Thanks.

David, come in.

Sorry to keep you waiting.

As you can imagine, it's pretty hectic around here.

Any progress, ma'am?

Not yet. [sighs]

The shooter signed into Pascoe House as a tradesman using a false name.

He was carrying no ID or devices.

Fingerprints haven't thrown up a database match either.

We'll find out, and his accomplices, if there are any.

I'm not here. Eyes front.

You've distinguished yourself again, David.

I intend to put you forward for a commendation.

There's even talk of a medal.

Thank you very much, ma'am.

Obviously, Thornton Circus will have to be looked into by the IOPC,

as the gunman died at the scene,

but all witnesses say you acted with complete professionalism.

Uh, there's 101 places I need to be.

Sorry, ma'am.

Stephen Hunter-Dunn, the Director- General of the Security Service...

The Home Secretary's met with him how many times in recent weeks?

I've not been counting, ma'am.

They're having almost daily conferences and keeping me out of the loop? Why?

-No idea, ma'am. -She's overruled our security advice.

She's taken the 1st of October attack off us.

Unjustified, unprecedented.

This is a very, very dangerous politician.

Someone who must be stopped.

But a politician who happens to regard you as her blue-eyed boy.

[Craddock] There's an upside to the Home Secretary having you reinstated.

You know everyone she meets, when, where, how long.

We've arranged to keep her at The Blackwood, with an adjoining room.

My surveillance team will issue you with the necessary equipment

to monitor her meetings.

Is that lawful, ma'am?

I've got my duties as a PPO. I'd rather stick to those, ma'am.

[inhales] She's got you wrapped round her finger.

[Craddock] I see this all the time, David.

The minister ingratiates himself with the PPO, a favor here, pulling strings there.

You think it's out of the goodness of their heart?

It's so you'll keep their secrets, no matter what.

Our investigation is well under way into the bombing that took place

right next to your kids' school.

We heard the Security Service had advance knowledge schools were targets.

And who do they run to with their intelligence?

One of her team told me, in strictest confidence,

as soon as the school was mentioned, she recognized the name straight away.

There's only one plausible explanation.

She'd been given prior intelligence it was a target.

All your precious Home Secretary had to do was say the word

and your kids would have been out of harm's way,

but she sat back and let it happen.

Ma'am.

Ma'am.

I'll be in the adjoining room. Have a good evening, ma'am.

Yeah.

You, too.

Sarge.

[door beeps]

[sighs]

[inhales deeply]

[sighs]

[gasps]

My job... your job, it just complicates everything.

[moaning]

Nothing complicates my job.

It's to protect you.

We have intelligence on a possible terrorist attack on a London school.

One of the schools threw up a link to a serving police officer.

His kids attend. David Budd.

[siren wails]

[Sampson] Authorize MASTS and ARVs to carry out

enforced stop, with critical shot authorized, if required.

Strictest confidence, but you've got a right to know.

-It happened near your children's school. -What?

[screaming]

[David] How do you know my kids' school?

It must've appeared in the immediate incident report.

The attack occurred a few minutes before, a bit early for the connection to be made.

[Andy] How do you reckon she'd feel if she got a taste?

-Taste of what? -Suffering the consequences.

-[gunshot] -Down! Down! Go!

[engine revs and tires screech]

-[gunshot] -[Julia squeals]

It's okay, ma'am! The bullets can't get through the armor plating!

Shooter's located on roof of Pascoe House 1-0-0-0 feet south of Thornton Circus.

Armed police!

I'm starting to lose confidence in the police's ability

to make rapid enough progress, so I'd like to take up Stephen's proposal

for the Security Service to assume a role in interviewing the 1/10 bombers.

-What? -Thank you.

Home Secretary, you are setting a dangerous precedent.

We've agreed, I think... This can only be a police matter.

[Roger] PM's pissed off. Thinks you're hogging the limelight.

Naturally, I disabused him of the idea you'd attempt a leadership challenge.

We were under attack, you, me, members of the public. Terry was blown apart.

-Are you all right? -Who would give that order?

To hold resources back and leave us in the line of fire.

That would be an executive officer at SO15.

Anne Sampson.

[Sampson] My surveillance team will issue you with the necessary equipment

-to monitor her meetings. -Is that lawful, ma'am?

They're having almost daily conferences and keeping me out of the loop. Why?

No idea, ma'am.

[Craddock] I see this all the time, David. The minister ingratiates himself

with the PPO. You think it's out of goodness of their heart?

It's so you'll keep their secrets, no matter what.

We had good news about my son's schooling.

I'm glad.

She'd been given prior intelligence it was a target, but she sat back

and let it happen. She's got you wrapped round her finger.

You've got to finish the job.

-[gunshot] -[exhales]

-Nothing complicates my job. -[groans]

It's to protect you.

-[Julia] How long were you in the army? -[David] Ten years.

Is that what you always wanted to do?

You'll probably laugh, but... when I was in school, I wanted to be a doctor.

I'm not laughing.

What happened?

[sighs]

To get into medical school, you need work experience.

How do you get that? By knowing a doctor who can get you in.

I had no idea where to start so...

never applied.

-[Julia] They don't hurt? -Not now.

I'm one of the lucky ones.

Because you survived?

Aye, that too.

Even if it could cost me my job.

Mm.

Sex with the Home Secretary...

it's a heinous crime.

[both chuckle]

[muffled voices]

-[Julia] Please, come in. -[Hunter-Dunn] Thank you.

[muffled chattering]

[muffled chattering continues]

[Hunter-Dunn] The Thornton Circus attack, terrifying for you...

[muffled conversation]

[Hunter-Dunn] We don't know if there's a connection or he was acting alone.

It's RIPA-18, isn't it? It's made me a target.

One possible reason.

What do you mean?

The only plausible conclusion is your itinerary was leaked.

By the police?

-They set me up... and it's obvious why. -Home Secretary?

Our arrangement...

No one knows. I can assure you of that.

In regard to which, we need to establish the most secure means

of getting the material to you.

Well, not via the office.

Leave it with me.

Have a good day, Home Secretary.

[footsteps and door closes]

The Thornton Circus attack on Home Secretary Julia Montague

was carried out by a sniper

firing from the roof of a nearby office building, Pascoe House.

The gunman appears to have gained access to the roof by posing as a tradesman

but took his own life before he could be questioned.

[ringing tone]

Hi, this is Vicky's phone. Leave me a message.

Hiya, love... Vic, hi. It's me. Uh, you're probably on the school run or something.

Uh, I was just calling to check you're all all right and uh...

and yeah, just, uh, if you need anything, I'm here, all right?

Bye.

[exhales]

-Morning, ma'am. -Morning, Sergeant Budd.

Sleep well?

Yes, ma'am. You?

Yes. Thank you.

Lavender coming out.

Uh, sorry, one moment. I just need to use the loo.

Sorry, Skipper, we don't have any female officers in here.

This way, ma'am.

Sorry, do you mind?

Police officer. I need to ask if anyone's in here!

Just a second, ma'am.

All clear, ma'am.

I know you'll never let anything bad happen to me.

David, thanks for coming in.

-You're welcome, ma'am. -Have a seat.

I thought this would be the most secure way to hear your report.

My report, ma'am?

On the Home Secretary's contact with the Security Service.

Nothing significant as yet, ma'am.

No?

The Director-General entered her hotel at 07:49 and left at 08:22.

I was taking a shower and missed that. Very sorry, ma'am.

-We've put you in that room for a reason. -Ma'am?

How's the family, David?

-Is there intel they're still in danger? -No, but there was.

I'll be completing a review of the threat-to-life assessment.

Extending their stay at the safe house

will be weighed against the operational priorities in our budget.

I'll be sure to record the Home Secretary's next meeting.

Good man.

Oh, and one more thing. Sorry to cut into your time off,

but SO15 want to interview you about Thornton Circus.

I gave them a full statement at the time.

Still, the IOPC's involved, so they want to dot the Is.

Ma'am.

[man] PS Budd, sorry to keep you. DCI Sharma.

-Sir. -This is DS Rayburn.

-Nice to meet you. -Hi.

Are you okay to talk to us? You want Legal or your Fed rep?

-Happy to help. -Great stuff.

[sighs] SO15, recorded witness interview with PS Budd.

-DS Rayburn. -DCI Sharma.

PS Budd.

Okay, we're grateful for your written statement,

but we'd like you to take us through, just in as much detail as possible,

the events on the roof of Pascoe House.

It's all as per my statement.

Uh, the shooter was exactly where I'd seen him, the roof of Pascoe House.

He was dressed as a workman and equipped with a PSL.

When the ARVs arrived, he decided there was no way out.

-How come he didn't see you? -I was observing from a covered position.

Why did he turn the pistol on himself?

As you know from my statement, I attempted to arrest him.

I called "armed police" and ordered him to surrender his firearm.

He chose not to comply.

Well...

So, he didn't say anything that might reveal a motive?

In firing on the Home Secretary's vehicle, I mean.

I'm afraid not, sir.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to ID the gunman or trace the firearm either.

It takes some doing, getting a weapon like that and leaving no trace.

Look, if there's anything you can tell us about him, it would be a big help.

Sorry.

We've got these... images from the CCTV cameras on the roof.

[Sharma] They show a significant verbal exchange between you and the gunman.

But unfortunately, your mouths aren't visible for lip-reading.

Yeah, he'd repeated a number of times he had no intention to surrender.

One thing that occurs to me, David... It's okay if I call you David?

The shooter had a firearm that could blow half your body away.

Why didn't he use it on you and make a getaway?

As per my statement, that firearm was packed away and the ARVs arrived.

If he'd got past me, he'd have nowhere to run to.

See, David, this is the thing, this guy, he's a complete stranger, yeah?

Yet somehow you know for certain

when he sees the ARVs, he decided to throw in the towel?

You're quite right, sir. I couldn't know that.

I... made a.... uh, an assumption

um, which was reinforced by the shooter's final comments to me.

But I am happy to amend my statement, if that would assist your inquiry.

-Okay, uh, thank you very much, David. -Sorry I couldn't be more help.

[Sharma] It's okay.

-[Rayburn] Interview terminated at 14:48. -We'll send someone in to show you out.

[door closes]

One moment, please.

All clear, ma'am.

-Is anything the matter? -No.

The family's still not back at home?

The safe house has been extended. There's no other option,

with everyone in the dark about whether they're still a target.

You can always come to me.

That'd be asking you to circumvent security protocol.

[sighs] Protocol...

It's your family.

None of the code words retrospectively associated with your family

have been detected in communications with other cells on the watch list.

That's good to know. Thank you.

Is there something more?

No.

You're sure?

You wouldn't personally deal with my son's change of school. Not worth the risk.

Are you sure that's how you knew the name?

I'm tired. I've got a shitload of work to do.

[she sighs]

Thank you, Sergeant.

Have a good evening.

Ma'am.

We will leave no stone unturned

in our efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

[woman] The Commissioner released an e-fit image of the assassin.

[commissioner] I would urge any members of the public who recognize this man,

or who have any information that may help us, to please come forward.

[breathes heavily]

[distant door slams and footsteps]

[Julia] How much have you got?

[Longcross] Decryption instructions for viewing the material.

We've taken the liberty of providing you with a tablet,

so the material can't be traced to your own devices.

We'll take the tablet back when you're finished.

It contains a read-only file you'll be able to view for a limited-time period

before being locked out and requiring new decryption.

If that happens, you should get in touch.

I'm authorized to make suitable arrangements.

Let's see how I go. Is that the lot?

[Longcross] For the time being. I'll leave it with you.

[footsteps and door opens]

Sir. Police Officer.

I need to ask you to identify yourself.

You first.

PS David Budd, the Home Secretary's PPO.

The very man.

I'm here by invitation with all the necessary clearances.

I don't doubt it, but what was the name?

Longcross. Richard Longcross.

[sighs]

The shooter signed in to Pascoe House as Adrian Smith, but that's a false name.

We're pursuing the theory he might be ex-Forces,

so we've been circulating the e-fit via the MoD.

Sir, the CCTV trawl's pulled up something promising.

-Received it yet? -Sarge.

Great.

Play.

He's doing his best to avoid the cameras but this one's grabbed him.

This is the night before the shooting.

And that appears to be the same gun bag.

He's got into position under cover of darkness, waiting for the Home Secretary.

If this is him, he knew her movements in advance.

Christ! We need a list of everyone who knew

the Home Secretary's itinerary that day and how long in advance it was set.

-In on your day off, Skipper? -Admin piles up.

Never-ending keeping you lot in line.

It appears the two bombs were made by the same person or persons,

proving there's a wider conspiracy.

We still don't know if the gunman was part of it, too.

If the gunman did have...

[meeting not audible]

There's also a high probability the police are leaking sensitive information.

Sorry, do you have any evidence of that as yet?

A terrorist cell obtained information regarding

the family of the Home Secretary's Principal Protection Officer.

A sniper was aware of the Home Secretary's itinerary.

-I'd call that compelling evidence. -[Mike] Circumstantial evidence.

You're right, Mike. No one wants to jump to any conclusions,

especially when the deadliest threat comes from the possibility of another bombing.

My officers are doing their best to glean as much information as possible

from the 1st of October bombers.

-[Julia] Any progress? -Unfortunately not.

Right. Well, thank you, Stephen.

Before I go, Home Secretary, perhaps I could have a word in private?

Have you had an opportunity to view the material?

Thank you.

I feel it's my duty, as a public servant, to take action.

There's advantage in moving quickly.

I'm in a position to notify you of the most apposite timing.

Thank you, Stephen.

[elevator] Going down.

Long day, sorry.

You do all the work. I just watch.

I'm sorry about last night. I was snowed under.

I've got work to do, and then I'll give you a knock.

Like I'm room service.

[opens bottle, drops bottle-opener]

[knocking]

[door opens]

I think you know I didn't mean it like that.

Please don't turn out to be another bloke who can't accept a woman having power.

We're not handling this very well, are we?

No.

It's me. It's my fault. I...

-I never expected... -Well, neither did I.

This your way of kidding me I'm more in control?

You see right through me.

[David] Lavender received a package from an individual

identifying himself as Richard Longcross.

I already took the liberty, ma'am. Drew a blank on the PNC.

So, who is he?

If he's been given access via all the necessary clearances,

then he's got to be Security Service.

They're feeding her intelligence they're keeping from us.

[Craddock] What was in the package?

Unfortunately I wasn't able to determine, ma'am.

The principal kept the item on her person the whole time.

-I'm afraid access hasn't been possible. -What is she up to?

You need to find out.

Ma'am.

[news report #1] With a Commons vote on RIPA-18 just around the corner,

whose ideology will really win out, the Prime Minister or the Home Secretary?

[report #2] ...attacked as a Snoopers' Charter, it would give agencies like MI5

and GCHQ wider powers of surveillance over...

Did you get those figures for the online searches for Jihadist propaganda?

Yes. I've got them here.

-I've got them. -Oh. Thanks, Rob.

Thank you, Sergeant. No idea how long this is gonna take.

Ma'am.

-I had the info. -What's your problem?

-No problem. -What the hell am I doing here

if you won't let me do my job?

Your job is to be visible beside the Home Secretary.

The demographic most vulnerable to our counter-terrorism policy is...

-Boys! -Doesn't take a genius to join the dots.

[MPs jeer]

The private affairs of millions of law-abiding citizens will be available

to various elements of the security and intelligence apparatus.

I urge this House to vote against this bill.

[MPs] Hear, hear!

Invasion of privacy implies unwarranted and/or disproportionate activity.

-It is neither. -[MPs call out]

The Security Services need to examine a thousand accounts

in order to find the one posing a threat.

What would have been the cost to those innocent commuters

-at the 1st of October rail attack? -[MPs call out]

And what will be the cost of failing to prevent the next attack?

I'm beginning to suspect...

Julia may be doing some business...

off-book... for the Security Service.

[Tahir] You've won the House.

Whether you've won the country's a different question.

Ask voters whether they back your position re terrorism, you poll highly.

Ask them whether they're happy with GCHQ knowing their online activity,

the numbers plummet.

But like I said, looks like you've got the House convinced.

I want the country.

In PR terms, I'm struggling to cut through the noise.

Then there's your lack of public appearances.

If you fulfill your engagement at St. Matthew's,

you'd get the exposure you need.

-The police would take a different view. -That's security, not politics.

[elevator] Going up.

I picked up you didn't oppose my engagement at St. Matthew's.

The final decision comes from well above my pay grade.

I think you've got an ulterior motive.

You think?

You don't want people suspecting you've become more protective.

Emotionally distracted.

Busted.

[ringing tone]

-[Vicky] Hi? -Hey. Did you get my message?

-How you doing? The kids all right? -Uh... yeah. Sorry. I did, yeah.

Where are you?

Listen, it's late. I'll catch up with you tomorrow, yeah?

Someone else there with you?

Vic?

Dave, it's late. Let's not do this.

[phone bleeps]

Good news, Skip. They've got a lead on the Thornton Circus shooter.

[helicopter whirs]

[Rayburn] Yeah, yeah. So, what’s the ETA on the lorry? We need the car moving now.

Well, I’ve been here half an hour.

-DCI Sharma. -[officer] Sir.

[Sharma] Cheers.

Hey, boss. The vehicle was reported as suspicious,

illegally parked for days, unfamiliar to residents.

It’s a rental.

-Customer named Adrian Smith. -Same false name he used at Pascoe House.

Yeah. Unfortunately there’s no CCTV on any of these streets and no ANPR triggered.

-[sighs] -Talk to the rental company.

-We're going to find who this bastard was. -Sir.

[siren wails]

All right?

-PS Budd. -[Julia] It’s me.

-I need to go out of town tonight. -Uh, where to?

Get everything organized and I’ll give you the information before we set off.

Sure.

You’ll drive. No police escort. No support vehicle.

I don’t want anyone to know.

Julia, I can’t authorize that. You’re a target.

I’m a target because of leaks. I’ll take responsibility.

Please, David. You’re the only one I trust.

-Evening, officer. -Ma’am, stand by.

Sir? Thank you.

Front gate. Got a visitor not on my sheet.

It’s Lavender.

Continue through the gates. An officer will direct you to park up.

[Julia] Thank you.

Don’t mention this to anyone. This never happened.

And if I don’t come back, go to the Death Star.

[door]

-Julia? -Prime Minister.

This is unexpected.

Julia Montague has gone to Chequers.

Tonight?

Tried to keep it under the radar.

Who the hell does she think she is?

Do you want a plan put in place?

[crowd chant] RIPA-18, no police state!

RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

RIPA-18, no police state!

RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

[man on the radio] ...to the right. 313. The nos to the left...

[crowd chant]

[news report] ...18 has passed its third reading in the Commons

and now goes to the Lords.

[crowd noise]

[reporter] A safer country or a snoopers’ charter, Minister?

[crowd] RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

[Julia] The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill will be retrospective.

-[MPs call out] -Information... Information obtained

before it becomes law will be admissible in court,

and tonight our citizens are a step closer to sleeping more safely!

[MPs] Hear, hear!

[MP] Mr. Speaker, we are not sleeping more safely!

Rather we are sleepwalking...

[Roger] PM just called.

She ambushed him at Chequers. He won’t reveal a word of what they discussed.

But?

There’s going to be a reshuffle... a big one.

Julia’s snatching the key to Number Ten.

We need to do something... fast.

[moaning]

[moaning]

[she sighs]

David?

Are you asleep?

[he gasps, Julia cries out]

[she yells] David!

[yells] David!

[gasps and coughs]

[she whimpers]

[whimpers and gasps]

[David] Julia?

Sorry doesn’t even...

Are you all right? Do I need to call a doctor?

I’m all right. [exhales deeply]

I am so sorry...

[gasps] What...

Whatever your training has made you, it’s out of control.

Do you want me replaced?

[sighs]

Honestly, I don’t know. [sighs]

But you need to get help.

David?

David, I know you didn’t mean to hurt me.

[news report] Confirmation from the Home Office

that Home Secretary Julia Montague

will go ahead with her speech at St. Matthew’s...

[news report #2] ...liberties groups plan a protest outside St. Matthew’s College...

[news report #3] ...target of a recent assassination attempt

and she’ll use today’s platform

to address the challenges in the fight against terrorism.

Seven-Nine, Lavender clear to travel.

I know it’s rotten timing, but some stuff came out of the select committee

that maybe I should crack on with.

-Really? -Yes, I know, sorry, but don’t worry.

The last bit of fact-checking for your speech, still work in progress.

I'll have Tahir have it in front of you well beforehand.

-Thank you. -I'll have the car brought round.

-Thanks. See you later. -See you.

Lavender on the move.

-Shit, did I miss her? -Just a second. This is important.

I can’t make the speech. You’re handling it.

-What? -Not up to it?

-Fuck you, Rob. -Here’s all the background material.

-Anything I need to flag up before? -No. It all checked out. She's good to go.

Traffic's snarled up this side of the river so we'll go via the bridges.

Your call.

[distant siren]

[siren becomes clearer]

[crowd chant] RIPA-18, no police state!

-[chanting] -Shit.

RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

-Into the venue, Tom. -[crowd chants]

RIPA-18, no police state! RIPA-18, no police state!

Sit rep?

The shouting’s no problem. It's the eggs that are getting on my tits.

[crowd boos]

[eggshell smashes]

You’re fine, ma’am, into the venue.

[chanting fades]

-Welcome, Home Secretary. -Thank you.

-Julia Montague, how do you do? -Very well.

-Thank you for welcoming me here today. -[distant sirens]

-Julia Montague, how do you do? -Best move through, ma’am.

-Julia Montague. -Pleasure.

This way, Home Secretary.

Uh, I just need a moment with my aide.

-Yes, of course. -Thank you.

-Have you been through the fact checks? -I thought it had all been--

You have no idea how important today is.

I need the final fact checks in front of me before I go on.

I don’t want to find out I’ve made a tit of myself

only after the evening news rips my speech to pieces.

-Rob said it all checked out. -That’s not what he said to me.

See to it, Tahir.

-We’ve set up a green room. -Thank you. That's very kind.

[phone buzzes]

What do you want?

Final security sweep’s been done. Audience taking their seats, Skipper.

-Lavender good to go? -Deploy to the auditorium.

-See you in there. -Skip.

-Ready when you are, ma’am. -Wait.

[sighs]

I knew the name of your kids’ school

because it was on a list of possible targets.

I didn’t forewarn you, or anyone else for that matter...

due to the fact the threat was non-specific.

We’re still not clear as to why Heath Bank was singled out.

I ordered ARVs to deploy near all schools identified as being at risk...

and, thanks to that measure, no school children came to any harm.

You being my PPO makes this difficult anyway.

It’s for the best that changes.

-I... -[grabs hand]

I want you right beside me...

not because it’s your job...

but because it’s our choice.

[indistinct chatter]

[applause]

[Julia] Thank you. It’s a great pleasure to be here with you all this morning.

We live in extraordinary times.

It’s no exaggeration to say

terrorism poses the greatest threat to our national security since the Cold War.

We must do all in our power to protect our way of life.

[protestors] RIPA-18 makes a police state!

RIPA-18 makes a police state! RIPA-18...

Seven-Nine. Protesters in the auditorium, being removed.

[shouting]

[man] Shame on you, Julia. Shame on you!

[indistinct yelling]

Coming to you now. Obtain details from them, polite as you can.

The principal won’t thank us for being heavy-handed.

Let’s not deny them their right to express a view.

They say in times of national emergency, the first casualty is free speech.

[laughter]

I don’t care what you all do when you switch your internet browser to private.

We’re not after you if you type into your search engine "B-O-O-B-S."

[light laughter]

But we ought to know if you type in "B-O-M-B."

Now, let’s return to the subject of how we prevent attacks.

Many who would carry them out are born here.

They're educated here, employed here.

They weren’t born wanting to attack us.

Something happened along the way, a sense of alienation,

a sense of exclusion from the best opportunities

this country has to offer.

Law, medicine...

journalism, politics...

More appears to be happening to close off these careers than to open them up.

Unpaid work experience. Unpaid internships.

Though they’re open to everyone, of course,

provided you’ve inherited enough money to feed, clothe and house yourself.

I see how an impressionable young person might form the view

that elite society is intent on keeping them out.

Possibly, they begin to feel a desire to do harm

to those they think have it all on a plate.

In government, we are committed...

-You see anyone out there? -No.

-Stay put. -[Julia] But I am just as determined...

What the fuck?

Uh, there’s been a massive fuck-up with the speech.

-Rob just called me. I need to warn Julia. -What’s in the briefcase?

Research files, the fact-checking she needs.

Show me.

Uh, come on, mate, please.

Show me.

[distant chanting]

Okay.

Frankly, we’ve got to do a better job of stopping a 15-year-old

thinking that growing up in Bradford, or Birmingham is grimmer than jihad.

And we can only change their minds with the right leadership.

[murmuring]

We’ve not been getting...

-Everything okay, Skipper? -False alarm.

-Deploy to door two. -Skip.

[Julia] Now, that comes from a fair society that provides equal opportunity.

Security isn’t just about guarding our citizens from security threats.

Security comes from economic prosperity.

From good education, good jobs.

Together, we can...

[siren wails]

[reporter] The explosion ripped through the auditorium of St. Matthew’s College

as the Home Secretary delivered her speech on security.

First on the scene were police officers outside the venue

who were to marshal the crowd of civil-liberties protesters.

They reported a scene of utter carnage with smoke, ash and fires

still burning from the explosion.

There are reports of a number of deaths,

but no confirmed figures yet from the emergency services.

Casualties, many of them in a critical condition,

have been transferred to two of London’s four Major Trauma Centers.

[news report] Just to be clear, we still have no official confirmation

from Downing Street or the Home Office that the Home Secretary, Julia Montague,

was among those injured in the blast at St. Matthew’s College.

She was, of course, recently the target...

Hi, Rob Macdonald, special advisor to the Home Secretary.

Tony Steel, Chief Executive.

-And you are? -Jane Flannery, Media Liaison.

Okay, great. No statements

-re the Home Secretary’s condition... -[phone buzzes]

Hiya, Vic.

No, I’m all right. I’m all right. A few scratches, nothing serious.

[distant siren as TV blares in background]

Yeah.

[Rob] Mike, this is Tony Steel, Chief Exec of the hospital.

-Jane Flannery, media management. -How do you do? How do you do?

What the hell happened? For fuck's sake, answer me.

I heard there were security breaches from the word go.

Lawful protests by civil-liberties activists.

You know what I mean.

A search team under POLSA direction swept the auditorium twice.

Everything was clear.

-Well, it wasn’t, was it? -David.

Sergeant.

[Rob] If anyone’s got any doubts. Please run them by Number Ten.

Thank you for all that you’re doing.

Division in government, splitting them from top to bottom.

But it’s also the case that sometimes Julia Montague was accused

of exploiting the terror threat fear at home

to try to further her own ambition...

Critical incident declared, ma’am. JESIP’s fully active around the College.

Last of the casualties have been transited out.

Expo are searching for further devices, none detected so far.

Thanks, Deepak.

Prints taken from the rental car we found match the shooter’s at postmortem.

We’ve got a screengrab of the CCTV from the rental company.

He used the name Adrian Smith, same alias he used at Pascoe house as a tradesman.

He completed the application online.

The IP address leads to an internet café in South London.

Chances are he’s London-based.

After today’s incident targeting the Home Secretary again,

we can’t rule out a connection.

[inhales] Suggesting Adrian Smith had at least one accomplice.

[news report] Among the injured was the Home Secretary herself.

There’s still no official statement from Downing Street,

or the Home Office, on her condition

but it is believed that her injuries are severe.

Let’s return now live to...

Sergeant David Budd, Metropolitan Police.

British Transport Police have put out an alert on a possible suicide bomber

attempting to board a London-bound service.

[breathes heavily]

Don't do that! Please don't do that! Just stay still.

The man that was in here before, is that your husband? And he wants you to die?

[Julia] I can't see any justification for believing the Taliban

would govern Afghanistan in peace and harmony,

or Iraqi insurgents would ever have formed a stable democracy.

That doesn't require apologizing for the past.

[scrubs voice]

That doesn't require apologizing for the past.

I know you'll never let anything bad happen to me.

You said it, out in Helmand.

If you ever found yourself beside one of those bastards

that sent us out there, you'd close your eyes and pull the trigger.

Armed police!

You've got to finish the job.

[groans and squeals]

[Julia] Whatever your training has made you, it's out of control.

No. I'm fine, Julia.

No. You are far from fine.

[Longcross] We're providing you with a tablet.

So the material can't be traced to your own devices.

-I need to ask you to identify yourself. -Richard Longcross.

They're feeding her intelligence they're keeping from us! What is she up to?

You need to find out.

-Julia... this is unexpected. -Prime Minister.

Julia's snatching the key to Number Ten.

We need to do something... fast.

-Who the hell does she think she is? -Do you want a plan put in place?

I want you right beside me, not because it's your job...

but because it's our choice.

If you fulfill your engagement at St. Matthew's,

you'd get the exposure you need.

I'm sure the police take a different view.

This is a very, very dangerous politician...

someone who must be stopped.

What do you want?

-[David] You see anyone out there? -No.

Stay put.

-What's in the briefcase? -[Tahir] Research files.

Show me.

-Everything okay? -False alarm.

[Julia] ...a 15-year-old thinking that...

The Home Secretary, Julia Montague, was among those injured

in the blast at St. Matthew's College.

[Roger] I heard there were security breaches from the word go. What happened?

A search team swept the auditorium twice.

-Everything was clear. -Well, it wasn't, was it?

After today's incident, we can't rule out a connection.

[Sampson] Suggesting the gunman had at least one accomplice.

[sirens wail and helicopter buzzes]

[indistinct chattering]

[reporter] All enquiries are being referred to Downing Street,

but so far, Number Ten have made no official statement...

[sirens wail]

[chatter]

[reporter] We're being advised by hospital officials

that Ms. Montague is currently undergoing major surgery.

DCI Sharma.

[reporter] The Metropolitan Police is on high alert across London

with off-duty officers being called in from home to help in the urgent quest

to identify and round up any accomplices.

[woman] Trauma call, ETA 15 minutes. Trauma call, ETA 15 minutes.

PC Tom Fenton?

-DCI Deepak Sharma, SO15. -Sir.

Sorry, this is crap timing, but I'm trying to form a picture

of the events surrounding the explosion.

Witnesses have already told us one of your principal's aides, Tahir Mahmood,

appeared at the side of the stage, and that he was carrying a briefcase?

I didn't have eyes on that myself, sir.

What about afterwards, anything from Mahmood?

No, sir. He died instantly.

What do you recall about the final moments before the explosion?

Kim...

PC Knowles, she approached the stage.

That's when the device went off.

I was looking towards PS Budd to get a steer on what was going on.

What about Budd?

I'm a bit in the dark on that. He left the auditorium and...

when he came back in, that's when Mahmood appeared on the stage.

-What was Budd doing outside? -I don't know, sir.

That's unusual, though, isn't it, more than a coincidence?

[sighs] I'm so sorry, sir.

Before you go off duty, I need you to write up a first account,

everything you can remember, everything.

Okay, sir.

Thanks.

Amid the profound sense of shock here tonight,

two big, straightforward questions are being asked.

First, was Julia Montague the intended target of this attack?

And second, was she just moments away from launching a bid to take over Number Ten?

On that first question, the answer is we simply do not know.

On the second, well, for many months, there have been deepening divisions

between her and the Prime Minister, the two at odds

over their approach to security. With the Home Secretary pushing

-a more hard line stance... -[officer] Sarge.

-...with the controversial bill RIPA-18. -[Rayburn] Boss, over here.

All the TV cameras were trained on the Home Secretary.

We have this wider view from a CCTV camera.

[soft gasping]

Show us frame by frame on the explosion.

From this angle, it's unclear if the explosion originated from the briefcase.

-You shared this with Fort Halstead? -Yeah.

One for them to figure out. Ta.

You got a location on Budd?

On it, sir. We'll get him straight in for a statement.

Not just yet.

[distant sirens wail]

[phone buzzes]

[indistinct chattering]

-In the concealed files. -Sarge!

David.

-What's going on? -We're tracking communications involving

the Home Secretary's inner circle, in case they were compromised.

Okay.

We're looking for anything that might help us.

Are you okay to consent to us taking all of your phones, computers

and any other relevant devices you've been using for work?

-Uh... -And it would be a big help

if we could also search your address, please.

It's not a POLSA search or anything that detailed.

Sure, anything to help.

[indistinct chattering on police radio]

Cheers.

And the phone.

Ta. Right, let's get on with it.

Bag up that computer and any other devices he has laying around.

[officer] Sarge!

Open it up.

[Sharma] Mind if we crack on while everything's fresh?

-Sir. -One of your CPOs, Tom Fenton,

provided us with a first account.

Fenton was on duty with you and PC Knowles during the Home Secretary's speech.

-That's correct. -Fenton recalled you and PC Knowles left

the auditorium a short time before the explosion.

-Yes. -[Sharma] Why?

I, uh, saw someone outside the auditorium. I went to investigate.

-Someone acting suspiciously? -That's what I went to investigate.

Who was this person?

What does Kim say?

What?

I'm... sorry, David.

Um...

Kimberly appears to have been very close by the stage when the device went off.

She died of her injuries.

Look, mate. You know how important this might be.

Who was it?

Tahir Mahmood.

In what way was he behaving suspiciously?

He wasn't, or I'd have detained him.

So, what was he up to?

He needed to get information to the Home Secretary.

-He was looking for backstage access. -That's unusual, isn't it?

-I wouldn't know. -A big speech?

Some flunky arsing about on stage kinda ruins the image.

It's like I said. It's not my area.

Witnesses report Tahir Mahmood was carrying a briefcase.

Yes. He showed me the contents.

Home Office documents.

How thoroughly did you examine the briefcase?

-I inspected the contents. -Inspected?

I looked inside.

Documents.

Nothing else.

Did you search Mahmood?

If I saw grounds under stop and search, I'd have searched him.

He was a vetted government aide going about official business.

So you didn't search him?

No.

Some of the witnesses are informing us that the explosion

originated from the briefcase.

[Rayburn] We've got these video captures of CCTV in the seconds before the attack.

As you can see, Knowles approached the stage.

Yes.

[Sharma] Looks alarmed that Mahmood was up there.

-That's possible. -And here's you.

Not so quick on the uptake.

Like I said, I didn't think he posed a threat.

Why did you say, "What did Kim say?"

You were the officer in command.

You could've ordered him to be removed.

This is the second attempt on the Home Secretary's life.

Following the Thornton Circus sniper attack...

Both times you were the PPO...

the officer in charge of the Home Secretary's protection.

Yes, sir.

Either you've got rotten luck, mate, or it's a coincidence.

-Yes, sir. -I don't believe in coincidences.

I can't help you there, sir.

Maybe you can help me with something else. Why the Home Secretary?

-Sir? -Not the Prime Minister?

Or a softer target? You join her protection team

and we've got Thornton Circus, St. Matthew's College. What's going on?

The Home Secretary has been the Government's most...

visible spokesperson for national security since well before I was her PPO.

Louise.

Thank you for providing access to your devices.

We've only had time for an initial examination.

Now, there appears to be occasions when you turned off your mobile phone.

Why is that, David?

Cannot be disturbed.

Save battery.

You're aware the effect is to deactivate the GPS. Your movements can't be tracked.

That's not the reason.

You also carried out a search on the Home Secretary's parliamentary voting record.

Why was that, David?

Curiosity.

Your duty's to protect a politician, regardless of their policies.

What were you curious about?

Nothing in particular.

[distant siren wails]

David...

tell me something.

-Why did you abscond from the hospital? -Abscond?

No, sir.

I was with the Home Secretary.

Government officials arrived.

I was ordered to give them privacy.

You just walked out?

Didn't report back to your unit, didn't provide a statement.

-Louise had to track you down. -Not hard, sir, was it? I went home.

Why weren't you assisting the inquiry?

I just wanted to be alone.

An inquiry into an act of terror

perpetrated by someone you were the last police officer to be in contact with?

David... [sighs] Is there something you're not revealing to us

regarding the state of your mind before, during or after the attack?

No.

Right. Well, they're searching your flat.

You got anywhere to stay? Anyone you can call?

Yeah. Yeah.

-[woman] It's the husband. -Sorry.

All secure here.

After you hung up on me, I kept trying to call you back.

They took my phone as part of the investigation.

Why couldn't you just let me know you were okay?

'Cause I'm not.

They've said... one of the police officers was killed.

Is it someone you knew well?

We worked together.

Your new bloke...

he gonna make a good dad?

[sighs]

You're their dad, Dave. You'll always be their dad.

-David-- -It's my job to protect the principal.

Now she's in an operating theater fighting for her life.

Look, the sofa's made up for you. I need to go up.

We'll talk in the morning, yeah?

[whispers] Yeah.

[door]

...after the emergency services were alerted at around 5:00 yesterday.

There's now speculation that their initial findings suggest

the incident bears similarities to recent acts of terror

involving explosive devices, such as the failed 1st of October rail attack.

I'm the Home Secretary's Principal Protection Officer.

-Is there any news? -I'll take care of this.

She's still in the operating theater.

I can take your number and call if there's an update.

Thanks. I'll, uh...

I'll wait.

[news report] The police's fear has always been that these devices represent the work

of a single bomb-maker or a bomb-making terror cell.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Counter-Terrorism Branch, SO15,

have been working round the clock to identify suspects.

But apart from the man and woman detained for their part

in the 1st of October attack, there have been no further arrests.

The Met's head of counter-terrorism, Commander Anne Sampson,

has come under increasing pressure.

However, sources close to Commander Sampson

have told BBC News that the Met are facing an extraordinary threat.

Commander Anne Sampson.

Well, thank you all for coming in.

Um, the PM's asked me to step up to Acting Home Secretary.

Now, it goes without saying, I'd never wish in a million years

to assume this role under these circumstances

and I hope it's not long before Julia's able to retake the reins. Uh...

In the meantime, my duty's very clear,

to identify those responsible and neutralize any threats still at large.

I know you'll all help me to do that.

The Security Service is working round the clock.

We'll continue to serve faithfully.

I understand I.S. have put out a tweet.

"We salute our brothers who have stuck a knife in the heart of the British state."

They're not actually claiming responsibility,

plus the tweet's light on detail, with no specific mention of the bomber.

We're conducting a meticulous forensic examination of the crime scene,

and we've begun inspecting CCTV of the venue.

So far, only one suspicious individual has been detected,

a presumptive suicide bomber killed instantly by the blast.

Tahir Mahmood.

My God, someone from our own department! Aren't we meant to vet these people?

The evidence incriminating Mahmood is still only circumstantial.

He was vetted thoroughly.

He had no terrorist associations whatsoever. How could he?

He was cleared to work in the heart of government.

We've only just begun examining Mahmood's communication history.

Counter-terrorism officers have been carrying out raids throughout the night.

We've taken a number of Mahmood's family members into custody.

It's too early to exclude anyone or anything. Far too early.

The more pertinent question is how and why did the police officers responsible

for the Home Secretary's safety fail to detect the bomb in the first place?

You're not listening, Stephen.

The device wasn't planted beforehand. It was smuggled in by Mahmood.

You don't have proof yet. All I'm hearing, Anne, is you trying to point the finger

-at the Security Service. -For God's sake, stop this!

The country's relying on us to work together.

Thank you.

Now, I know this is difficult for everyone to contemplate, but my officers

need access to all staff associated with Mahmood.

Uh, naturally, we will cooperate fully, but this must be in strictest confidence.

-Absolutely. -This cannot get out. Cannot.

No leaks.

The more we delve into this inquiry, the more likely it seems

all recent terror events could be connected.

In our view, the probability is extremely high of a single bomb-maker.

All these incidents could be connected under a single conspiracy.

Accomplices to that conspiracy could still be at large,

-including the mastermind behind it all. -Yes.

I don't, in the circumstances, mean to sound unsympathetic,

but it would help to know if the Home Secretary's wishes still apply,

regarding the Security Service taking the lead in these investigations.

It's a police matter.

Thank you very much.

Thanks.

[Sampson] New broom, Stephen.

Seems the Acting Home Secretary's not as susceptible to bullshit.

-[Mike] You field any requests from them. -Yes, boss.

[distant shouts of children playing]

David?

This way.

What the hell are you still doing here? You had your job and you failed.

I'm sorry.

-Roger Penhaligon. -Hello.

[surgeon] We did everything we could. I am sorry.

It is with the deepest regret that I can confirm

that despite the heroic efforts of our emergency services...

the Home Secretary, Julia Montague, succumbed to her injuries

and was pronounced dead a short while ago.

I wish to express my government's gratitude

to those members of the emergency services

who rendered assistance and extend our deepest sympathies

to every victim of yesterday's attack...

which also claimed the life of our esteemed colleague, Julia Montague.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family

at this tragic time.

Yesterday's assault on our democratic process...

was a cowardly act, perpetrated by individuals with no regard

for our values of tolerance, respect and the rule of law.

My government and I will continue to be vigilant against these conspiracies...

which betray the unity of our nation.

These plots do not always arise from outside our number...

outside our community.

Some fester within.

[breathes heavily]

[sobs]

[groans]

[sobs]

Fuck!

[exhales]

[gunshot]

[dog barks in distance]

Boss, we've got CCTV on Mahmood.

-Great. -Play again.

-Is that the briefcase? -Yes, sir. Just watch what happens next.

Shit.

Play on.

We're going through the Palace of Westminster Security to ID him.

Thanks, Louise.

[knocking and door opens]

[officer] Ma'am. DCI Sharma.

Ma'am.

Rob Macdonald. He's worked at the Home Office for three years,

the last two as special advisor to Julia Montague.

Why is he of interest?

A couple of hours before the bombing.

We understand he's at the Home Office now. Rayburn's on standby to bring him in.

Ma'am?

I've only just got the Home Office back on side.

Leave this with me, if that's okay, Deepak.

[door]

[bleeps and ringing tone]

[officer] Yes, ma'am.

Put me through to Mike Travis at the Home Office.

[officer] Ma'am.

[doorbell rings]

Dave, it's me!

[knocking]

[sighs]

-[loud knocking] -David!

David, I know you took my keys.

[sighs]

David, I've been phoning you all morning. I'm worried about you!

Open the door, or I will call the police!

[indistinct thud]

Dave, is that you?

[sighs]

Look, open the door or, I mean it, I will call the police!

Dave!

What is this stuff?

Brass fragments.

Fragments of what?

From the case.

What case?

The bullet case.

[drops tweezers]

Oh, my God.

Dave, what the fuck?

I mean... [sighs]

What about...?

-What about Ella and Charlie? -[he grunts]

I...

I'm taking you straight to the hospital.

No. No one can know about this.

There is a burn and a bruise, and it looks like you've ruptured your eardrum.

-They'll heal, won't they? -Yes, Dave, in time, but...

Jesus Christ, you cannot keep pretending that you're okay.

Dave, you shot yourself.

Not quite.

It was a blank round.

Well, why did you use a blank?

I didn't know it was.

[he sighs] I don't know how that could've happened.

Look, Vic. You better go. The kids, eh?

[clears throat] There's no way I am leaving you here like this.

[news report #1] ...Station closed while bomb-disposal officers were called...

[#2] The alert proved to be a false alarm and services resumed this evening.

There will be delays due to...

[news report #3] ...cell still at large. The palpable fear on the streets of London

is that the bomb-maker will construct more...

[#4] ...Vauxhall Bridge was another false alarm,

yet all police leave remains canceled until further notice.

Look. I'm really sorry. I can't tonight. A friend's come over.

She's having a bit of a crisis.

Why are you wearing that?

It keeps my head warm.

-You don't normally wear a hat indoors. -You said it's silly.

Then I'm being silly.

The pizza good?

It's nice.

It's okay.

[sobs softly]

Dad, what's wrong?

Nothing. I just need a hug.

[David sobs]

Dad, are you all right?

[David] I just did something silly today.

Wearing the hat?

That, too. [sobs]

I love you both very much.

Right. Come on, pizza.

[news report] In her political career, Julia Montague was a divisive figure.

In the weeks before her assassination, she was best known for spearheading

the controversial RIPA-18 bill through the House of Commons.

Her stance on national security issues

made her a target of protests by civil-liberties groups.

Ms. Montague was the target of an earlier assassination attempt

by a gunman who fired shots at her ministerial car.

Uh, shut the door, Rob.

I've had a call from Anne Sampson, SO15 Commander.

They want to go over some things with you.

Uh, just me or...?

-Oh, Christ, Mike, Jesus Christ-- -Look, mate.

Sampson was at pains to point out she won't jeopardize our working relationship.

Guarantees complete discretion.

-This is a voluntary interview-- -It wasn't even my idea!

A voluntary interview and consent to forensic searches.

Searches for what?

Well, they need to examine your home and vehicle for traces of explosives.

-What? Mike, seriously? -No one needs to know anything about it.

-We'll get you the best solicitor. -For God sake! Why is this all on me?

-Are they going to interview you? -I said, enough!

[chuckles] They won't find anything.

There's a simple, plausible story for you to stick to,

and you will stick to it.

[chattering over police radio]

On my way.

I'll be back in a sec.

-You've barely eaten. -I need to get back to work.

You're not well enough.

Something's going on, something I can't figure out.

What makes you say that?

Someone tampered with my gun.

It was behind a skirting board, then I shifted it.

Someone had to access my flat, carried out a thorough search.

Oh, well, the police searched your flat.

If they found an illegal firearm, they'd seize it.

They wouldn't change the bullets for blanks.

No, this was someone else, someone with expertise, someone...

with an agenda.

Well... Who would that be?

[Sharma] For the DIR, Mr. Macdonald is being interviewed on a voluntary basis

and has chosen to be accompanied by a solicitor.

Thank you for assisting our inquiry.

Anything to help, anything at all.

Let's start with the attack on St. Matthew's College.

-[inhales deeply] -What were your movements that day, sir?

Uh, Commons that morning, then back to the Home Office.

You didn't travel with the Home Secretary and her team?

Unfortunately, I couldn't.

There's too much to deal with following the vote on the RIPA-18 bill.

-More like fortunately. -[Sharma] You normally skip big speeches?

I was frustrated not to be there, but I was needed in the office.

For the DIR, I'm showing Mr. Macdonald video-capture images

from the Palace of Westminster.

Who are seen in these images?

I am, and Tahir Mahmood.

And how would you describe your relationship with Tahir Mahmood?

-Good. -Why are you lying to us?

My client is telling the truth.

Provide some basis for that question or kindly withdraw it.

A forensic lip-reader has examined the CCTV and, according to her transcript,

the conversation between you appears acrimonious.

Uh... politics is a high-stress business.

There are words and then it's all forgotten over a few beers.

Therefore, it is truthful to say you had a good relationship with Mahmood.

Mm.

But I didn't know him well.

[stammers] We weren't close.

Obviously, we're all extremely shocked to think he might be involved.

So, what's going on here, then, Mr. Macdonald?

I was, um...

I'm... providing Tahir with documents relating to the Home Secretary's speech.

Where did you obtain the briefcase?

Uh...

-Um, it... It was Tahir's. -You took a long time to answer.

Sorry, it's been a very difficult time, and I couldn't immediately recall.

It was Tahir's. He left it with me and I was returning it to him.

Was there anything suspicious about the briefcase?

Not that I can think of.

If you were just giving him documents, why the need for the briefcase?

It seemed easier that way and we were returning his briefcase.

We?

I.

We've managed to get Mahmood's communication history.

A call was received to his phone before the bombing.

Now, according to his contacts, it's listed as your number.

What was the purpose of this call, Mr. Macdonald?

Probably I just called to make sure everything was okay.

It's an important speech, and I was frustrated not to be there in support.

-Everything wasn't okay, though, was it? -I'm sorry?

Mahmood attempted to interrupt the Home Secretary's speech.

Not on my account.

Odd, though, isn't it? A couple of minutes before Mahmood rushes backstage,

he receives a call from you.

You sure he didn't tell you he needed to do that?

-Certain. -Didn't seek your advice about it?

No. Whatever Tahir was doing, I'm completely in the dark about it.

These are all of Mahmood's movements, with the Home Secretary.

Receiving a call off Rob Macdonald.

Being stopped by David Budd.

[click]

[Sharma] Why didn't he spot the bomb?

[indistinct chattering in background]

-Hello. -Sir.

Police Sergeant Budd. I'd like to speak to your security manager.

He'll remember me. We had a few briefings when I stayed here.

Certainly, sir. Security.

This is the time I'm interested in: the Home Secretary received a visitor.

Okay.

Ten o'clock.

-What happened there? -Sorry, Dave, it shouldn't do that.

Shit. Uh, let's look at the lobby, or the lifts.

-See if we can nab him that way. -Okay.

[David] Stair access?

[inhales deeply]

-I don't know what to say, mate. -Chris, no bullshit, now.

Who's had access to these hard drives?

I checked the logs already. No one's been at it. No one.

Do you have any leads yet on Mahmood

having any accomplices or association with terrorist groups?

No, ma'am. All the searches so far relating to Rob Macdonald

have failed to detect any traces of explosives.

It's still unclear the device was in the briefcase all along

or if Mahmood made the pickup within the venue.

Plus, there's still no CCTV of any of his backstage activity.

All right.

What's the latest re David Budd?

So far, the CCTV does appear to support Budd's version of events.

He's still a person of interest, ma'am.

We've retaken responsibility for interviewing Nadia Ali.

She's our best lead to the bomb-maker. She's terrified, though.

Still in thrall to her husband.

However, speaking of PS Budd, I believe there's a shortcut

into convincing her she can trust us.

[news report #1] ...concerns the blasts are the work of a single bomb-maker.

[policeman] We have a prime suspect in the attack on St. Matthew's College

that killed the former Home Secretary, Julia Montague.

[Mike] ...to withhold the name

of the suicide bomber responsible for the attack.

It is not yet known if he was acting alone...

nor is it yet confirmed whether he was a member

of a recognized terrorist organization.

What's with the new look?

[news report #2] ...Commons earlier today. And what now for RIPA-18?

Having lost its...

The hat?

It keeps my head warm.

Do me a favor, mate, and remove the headgear.

You'll have to at some point.

You didn't get that in the explosion. What happened?

A gas ring was playing up. I had my head right over the hob.

Didn't... realize the gas was open on one of the other rings,

when I hit the spark...

[sighs]

[Rayburn] Nadia, thank you very much for speaking to us.

If anything's unclear, please feel free to consult with your solicitor

or your appropriate adult.

If at any time you need to stop, please just say so.

Do you understand?

Yes.

I'm now going to hand you over to Police Sergeant Budd.

-As-salaam ‘alaykum. -Wa-alaikum-assalaam.

For the DIR, I said: "Peace be upon you,"

and the interviewee replied: "And also upon you."

So, Nadia, how are you doing?

This is all very intimidating.

[inhales deeply] That's why the officers here thought it would be a good idea...

for me to talk with you.

That was scary...

on the train, when we met.

I'm really glad that no one got hurt that day.

I am, too.

Thank you for helping me.

Nadia, what I'd like to do is ask you some questions...

about the bomb you intended to use on the train. That be all right?

Mm.

Sorry, Nadia, is it okay if you could speak up, for the recording?

Sorry, yeah, um... Yes.

How did you obtain the bomb?

I know you're frightened, but we can protect you.

You believe me, don't you?

Sorry, Nadia...

Oh, sorry. Um, yes.

[David] Where did the bomb come from?

My husband.

At this point, I should note for the tape that I've briefed my client

regarding the legal compellability of a spouse,

and Nadia's appropriate adult...

is satisfied that she's cooperating of her own free will.

Thank you.

Your husband gave you the bomb to wear?

Yes.

I know this is very upsetting, but you're doing really well.

Really well.

Did your husband build the bomb himself?

Take your time answering.

Did he build it?

-No. -He got it from someone else?

[breathes heavily]

Nadia, we're desperate to find the person creating these devices.

He's killed and wounded dozens of people, and he'll kill more if we don't catch him.

He said it was a gift.

A gift... who from?

He wouldn't tell me.

Okay.

You're doing great. This is really helpful.

Perhaps he had meetings with someone.

I was never allowed.

You weren't allowed to know who he was meeting?

Sometimes he would lock me in the house when he went out.

That must have been very frightening... and upsetting.

[distant siren blares]

-[sobs] -Were there any names he mentioned?

Or people he was close to that you were suspicious of?

-There was only one time. -What happened?

He locked me in the house,

but I was crying so loud, he thought the neighbors might hear.

What did he do?

He forced me into his car. He made me go with him.

Where?

I don't know. A car park.

In London?

[Nadia] I don't know. I think so.

Was it a long drive or short? How many minutes?

20, no more.

That's great. That's great.

What happened in this car park?

He met with a man.

The man gave him something.

That's very important information.

Well done, Nadia. What did this man give your husband?

I can't remember.

Could it have been a piece of luggage or a case of--

David.

You don't remember what the item was?

The interviewee is shaking her head.

Can you describe this man?

No one can hurt you, Nadia. You're safe now.

Was he an Asian man?

The interviewee is nodding. Good, thank you, Nadia.

Have you ever seen any of these men before?

Just take your time.

Um...

I don't know. Maybe. [sighs]

I think we should take a break now, Nadia.

I'm going to ask my colleagues to get together some maps and satellite photos

and we're going to see if you can help us locate this car park.

DS Rayburn pausing interview at 15:50.

Cheers.

Well done in there.

Feels like we're finally getting somewhere at last.

If we locate where her husband met the bomb supplier,

maybe Nadia can pick him out from CCTV.

Yeah. We'll see.

Louise.

Stuff's... happening... behind the scenes.

Someone acquired access to my flat without my knowledge.

Well, we carried out a search. There was no sign of forced entry.

There's more to this, Louise. Take Tahir Mahmood's position at the Home Office.

If he's really the bomber, he wasn't vetted properly.

Who's in charge of vetting?

The bosses are in a slanging match with the Security Service,

way above my pay grade.

Tahir couldn't have been acting alone.

He wasn't carrying the bomb when I searched that briefcase.

Someone else we don't know about either gave it to him or...

planted it for him to pick up, someone with access.

Well, who?

[men chattering]

After the Home Secretary moved to the Blackwood Hotel,

someone acquired clearance to make a secret visit to her suite.

He had an insight into her movements, was able to bypass our security.

He gave the name "Richard Longcross."

I viewed CCTV from the hotel.

It's been tampered with, so there's no evidence of his visit.

Security Service, I'm sure of it.

I'm not investigating the Security Service.

I'm investigating Tahir Mahmood.

-I'm sorry, David. End of-- -The principal was killed on my watch.

I want to be part of finding the bastards that did it.

Maybe that's a reason for you not to be.

This is grade-A bullshit, Sampson involving him in the inquiry

while he's still a person of interest.

Two attacks on the Home Secretary, Budd, PPO for both.

Mahmood's briefcase... I don't trust him.

He's hiding something.

-[Rayburn] Anything? -No. Nothing yet.

I want you right beside me, not because it’s your job...

but because it’s our choice.

This is a very, very dangerous politician, someone who must be stopped.

We’re providing you with a tablet, so the material can’t be traced

to your own devices.

[David] Someone acquired clearance for a secret visit to her suite.

I need to ask you to identify yourself.

He gave the name "Richard Longcross." Security Service. I’m sure of it.

That was us, plotting to build the Death Star.

Julia’s snatching the key to Number Ten.

We need to do something... fast.

This never happened. And if I don’t come back, go to the Death Star.

-I thought they were sending you a cab. -I don’t need their shitty cab.

[Rob] Let’s have some nice food, a couple of drinks.

This feels weird.

-What about Budd? -He left the auditorium.

When he came back in, that’s when Mahmood appeared on the stage.

-Rob just called me. I need to warn Julia. -What’s in the briefcase?

From this angle, it’s unclear if the explosion was from the briefcase.

What’s going on here, then, Mr. Macdonald?

Whatever Tahir was doing, I’m completely in the dark about it.

There’s a simple, plausible story for you to stick to,

and you will stick to it.

[Prime Minister] Despite the heroic efforts of our emergency services,

the Home Secretary, Julia Montague...

succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Dave, you shot yourself.

It was a blank round.

[Rayburn] Is there something you’re not revealing regarding the state

of your mind, before, during or after the attack?

Nadia, we're desperate to find the person who's been creating these devices.

[Sharma] Two attacks on the Home Secretary. Budd, PPO for both.

Mahmood’s briefcase. I don’t trust him. He’s hiding something.

-Sir, we heard back from Fort Halstead. -Thank you.

Shit.

The device wasn’t in the briefcase.

From the pattern of damage and the expansion of the blast wave,

it appears the bomb was planted under the stage.

-Planted? It couldn’t have been, surely. -We don’t know how they got access.

We’re checking security cameras and interviewing staff.

-The sniffer dogs-- -Materials that survived the explosion

suggest the device was housed in an airtight container.

When the detonator was triggered, it could have opened a valve to allow in oxygen

to support combustion of the TATP explosive.

Was it triggered by a timer?

Remnants of circuitry were detected at the scene.

Fort Halstead believe it could've been a pressure sensor

designed to trigger when weight was applied to the stage.

That’s why Mahmood needed to get backstage.

The Home Secretary had avoided activating the sensor.

Mahmood needed to get up and set it off.

Although that would create the risk of the device being triggered at the wrong time

by a person venturing onto the stage before the Home Secretary’s speech.

Hence we're investigating whether the pressure sensor or the device

were controlled by a timer, or if they were activated remotely.

By another person, not Tahir?

We’re looking, ma’am.

I’ve got my suspicions.

[indistinct chattering and phones ring in background]

You all right, Skipper?

I need updates from the Home Secretary’s PPOs and CPOs, anything suspicious,

anything out of the ordinary.

Something the matter, Tom?

We lost Kim!

Nobody’s heard a word off you about it.

I’m sorry, mate. You’re right.

I’ve been in my own head.

Let’s talk about this over a pint, eh?

[sighs] All right.

[phone buzzes]

David Budd.

David...

it’s Louise Rayburn.

Look, I’m not permitted to reveal details of the wider inquiry.

This didn’t come from me, okay?

The bomb wasn’t in the briefcase.

It wasn’t your fault.

David?

Thank you.

-Sorry to keep you waiting. -Let’s head round to the Red Lion.

-My shout. -Sounds good.

[both chatter indistinctly]

[background chattering]

Sarge, I thought you’d better see this.

Go back.

There’s an hour of footage missing.

-What? Is this on all of them? -Yes.

Right, save this all to a drive. Get it up to the boss.

Okay.

Your story about this guy, Longcross, and the missing CCTV...

-Yeah. -I believe you.

The hair was blond, pushed back off the forehead.

-[technician] Bit more like that? -Yeah.

-[David] The eyes were darker. Yeah. -Like that?

Yeah, that’s perfect.

-What about the nose? -The nose was wider at the tip.

-What about his jaw? -His jaw was a bit squarer.

-Hair? -Hair was shorter.

-Yeah. Eyes were maybe a little narrower. -Age okay?

Um, he's bit older-looking than this.

-Slightly narrower. -How’s that looking?

That’s starting to look like him.

-Sarge? -What you got?

Brilliant.

Cheers, mate.

Finally, we’ve got your shooter.

Sergeant Andrew Apsted, served in Helmand Province, two tours.

And get this, he was EOD.

[breathes heavily]

This could be the original bomb-maker, or an accomplice of Longcross.

Sorry.

Brings it all back?

It’s... it's brilliant.

Listen, David...

With everything that’s going on, maybe we’ve not paid enough attention

to the fact the shooter blew his brains out right in front of you.

You lost your principal and one of your team.

I think it’d be a good idea if you stepped away from the inquiry

and we get you some time with a counselor, yeah?

No. No way. Figuring out who killed Julia, that’s all that matters.

-Only that will make me feel okay again. -I think it runs deeper than that.

You just called her Julia.

[woman] Sorry, Nadia. I don't know what's keeping her.

We’re good to go.

[chattering over monitor]

We’ve got some plausible locations of the car park you described.

I'm afraid we weren’t able to see your husband’s car or any type of meeting

in any of the CCTV cameras relating to the car parks themselves.

We’ve looked at adjacent locations

and produced some images of persons of interest.

Just take your time with these, Nadia.

Do you recognize this man?

The interviewee is shaking her head.

What about him?

The interviewee is shaking her head.

The interviewee is shaking her head.

The interviewee is shaking her head.

Do you... recognize this man at all?

Take your time.

Sorry.

[Rayburn] It’s okay, Nadia.

Thank you.

-[sighs] -Well done, Nadia. That was great.

What about this man?

-You can’t do that. -I am doing.

-This wasn’t included in disclosure. -Nadia, please look at the e-fit.

Nadia, please, lives depend on this. Do you know this man?

Is this the man your husband met?

Nadia has already described the man as being IC4/6.

Were you too afraid to tell the truth? Was the man actually white?

Is this the man your husband met?

Is this the man your husband met?

Nadia has already described the man as being IC4/6.

Were you too afraid to tell the truth? Was the man actually white?

Is this the man your husband met?

It’s not evidential. You know the process for photo ID.

An e-fit's never gonna give a true likeness. Every chance she's mistaken.

-Right now that’s not really the point. -As your DCI, Louise, I’d say it is.

Just sitting on your hands?

-Leave this to us. -No one was following up on Longcross.

We have to consider all possibilities.

The Security Service were involved in the assassination of a Cabinet minister?

-We don’t know that. -We need to find out! Longcross is a lead.

From now on, every step is by the book.

What’s next, then, going by the book?

That’s for me and Commander Sampson to decide.

He’s only trying to help, boss.

David!

Look, Sharma’s under a lot of pressure. He values your contribution. We all do.

Sure.

David.

[sighs]

David, wait.

I really want to talk to you about your head wound.

I told you, I got it off a gas cooker.

-It's best if you're examined by a doctor. -Get off my back, Louise.

What am I supposed to do? Let you run around like everything’s rosy?

Do you not get it?

To discredit the inquiry, they make me out to be a basket case.

No one in this building would use that kind of language.

You’ve got an illness, David.

-You’re traumatized. -That sounds any better?

Why are you making this about me when Longcross supplied the bomb?

The Security Service.

Finding out why, that's the answer to all of this.

-You need help-- -I need to find who killed Julia.

[news report] Julia Montague’s funeral took place earlier today.

It was a private ceremony for close family only.

In the House of Commons, there was a succession...

[Prime Minister] An esteemed colleague who is a great loss to her party, her country

and this house.

[Mike] Those of us who knew Julia, who worked with her,

are still measuring the scale of our loss.

[Roger] Julia and I grew up together in this house.

In the end, the pressures of work made our marriage unsustainable.

To this day, I still look back

and remember our time together as the happiest days of...

[thud]

-[Longcross] Thank you, Home Secretary. -[door closes and footsteps]

-[Julia] How much have you got? -Enough.

Decryption instructions for viewing the material.

We’ll provide you with a tablet,

so the material can’t be traced to your own devices.

We’ll take the tablet back when you’re finished.

It contains a read-only file you’ll be able to view for a limited time period

before being locked out and requiring new decryption.

If that happens, you should get in touch. I’m authorized to make arrangements.

[Julia] See how I go. Is that the lot?

[Longcross] For the time being. I’ll leave it with you.

[Julia] Thank you.

[sighs]

[exhales deeply]

...departments, that would be great.

Anyway, cheers. We'll catch up on this again later.

-Thanks. -Okay, sure.

Commander Sampson's office, please.

Chief Superintendent Craddock.

David Budd's just come into the office.

Okay.

[woman] You have reached National Vehicle Services.

Please state your inquiry leaving your full name and a contact telephone number.

-David. -Ma'am.

No, no. It's okay.

I received a call from SO15. Apparently, you're being a pain in the arse.

-I've reason to believe-- -Listen.

We lost the Home Secretary. Let's go after the bastards who did it.

Thank you very much, ma'am.

-You okay to head across town? -Sure.

I'll have a car sent to the D Block door. See you down there.

Ma'am.

Tom.

-[knocking] -Come in.

-Lorraine. David. -[both] Ma'am.

My team have briefed me on this non-evidential photo ID

made by Nadia Ali.

This individual, Richard Longcross, you're convinced he works for the--

-The Security Service. Yes, ma'am. -There's no evidence of that.

There wasn't.

Last night, I saw him at an internet café...

using a vehicle whose registration data is withheld from the PNC.

Just a bullshit phone number to sucker you into setting off an electronic trip wire.

As you've disclosed it, we can smooth that over.

The only way Longcross could've gone there is if they're tracking keywords online.

What keywords?

Relating to kompromat the Security Service supplied to the Home Secretary.

What are you talking about?

In her hotel, a few days before she was killed,

the Home Secretary received a visit from Longcross.

He supplied her with an encrypted file of kompromat

she shared with the Prime Minister.

And you kept this to yourself?

David's on to something, ma'am. It wouldn't hurt to focus on that.

Did you manage to get copies of the kompromat?

That wasn't possible. I attempted to photograph the material using my phone,

but the device was equipped with an infrared sensor

that shut it down in proximity to digital devices.

Have you got any details on the scandal?

A series of scandals, all covered up,

a sexual assault, drug addiction, financial impropriety.

Last night, I learned they relate to the Prime Minister.

That's only what I was able to deduce. There may be more kompromat.

Now the Home Secretary's dead,

the Security Service must be terrified of their role coming out.

That's why Longcross is tracking keywords

relating to the kompromat, to intercept anyone who's on to them.

So, where's the kompromat now, David?

The Home Secretary had it with her. I assume it was destroyed in the explosion.

And you suspect the Security Service planted the bomb?

It makes no sense the Security Service murdered Julia Montague.

They were in partnership.

She offered them greater powers for the compromising material.

Maybe the relationship went sour, or she became a liability, I don't know.

Cui bono? Who benefits?

Clearly the Prime Minister, for one.

And his supporters, Roger Penhaligon, Mike Travis.

Mike Travis?

He was jealous of the Home Secretary's private meetings with the Security Service

and he's all about party unity and completely loyal

-to the Prime Minister and Penhaligon. -That's interesting.

We know Tahir Mahmood wasn't carrying the bomb in the briefcase,

but he did set off the device via a pressure sensor.

And Rob Macdonald probably induced him to go on the stage.

And who's Rob's new boss at the Home Office?

-Mike Travis. -Yeah.

Thank you, David.

-What's going to happen now, ma'am? -We'll see to it.

People keep saying that, meanwhile the killers are no nearer being caught.

[door slams]

Sorry to keep you. How can I be of assistance?

Just a quiet word.

The night the Home Secretary was in surgery, she had three official visitors,

Roger Penhaligon, Mike Travis and Rob Macdonald.

-That's correct. -What were their movements that night?

They were briefed in a management suite.

Mr. Penhaligon spent the night waiting news on his wife.

Ex-wife. So, he was alone?

Did he have any visitors?

What about... this man?

Or him?

Sorry.

Did Mr. Penhaligon hinder the medical staff in any way?

No, he was very concerned about his wife's welfare.

Ex-wife. Was there anything unusual he was concerned about?

He seemed very concerned about the Home Secretary's personal items,

-but I suppose that's not unusual-- -What items?

Her ministerial folder, her briefcase, her handbag.

-He took these? -No, they were never found.

Which is why Mr. Penhaligon got very anxious.

That's because they're of sentimental value.

Thank you.

[indistinct chattering and baby cries]

David Budd.

-What can we do for you? -A few minutes with your P.

Do you mind skipping me to the front of this queue?

This way.

Sorry. Mr. Penhaligon won't be a minute. Official business.

You're interrupting my service to my constituents and I want you to leave.

Don't make a scene in front of all these people.

Be all over social media before the hour's up.

I'd like to put to you new information regarding the murder of your ex-wife.

What new information?

I'm interested in an item that was in her possession before she died.

What item?

I was informed you were anxious to locate her belongings on the night of the attack.

She was in possession of material that affected national security.

I've been at the hospital.

They told me you were interested in items of sentimental value.

Her life is hanging by a thread and the Chief Whip's tracking down a handbag?

You're being offensive, Sergeant.

I suggest you stop this line of questioning now

and I'll take up my complaint with your senior officer.

The item you were looking for, you knew it wouldn't be in her official materials.

What was it you wanted to get your hands on?

I've nothing further to add without my solicitor present.

If you had a hand in her death, you'll have me to answer to.

If you'd, um, just give me a minute.

[grunts softly]

You're up to speed with the briefing we've received from Commander Sampson?

I am.

I want to raise a specific point of extreme sensitivity.

Okay.

Amit. Thanks.

Uh, this individual,

who gave his name as Richard Longcross,

was seen at the Blackwood Hotel by Julia's PPO,

yet surveillance footage was removed.

An allegation's been made he's one of your officers.

Is he?

No.

I can see only one acceptable way to prove he isn't.

And that would be?

Open yourself up to the police investigation. Give SO15 access.

As you are aware, we're conducting dozens of highly sensitive operations...

all of which could be jeopardized if sensitive information is disclosed.

Hundreds of operatives in the field, all of whom would be imperiled.

You're not above the law.

The matter isn't of law, but of national security.

The Thornton Circus gunman could only have known your predecessor's itinerary

via a police leak.

A police leak could only have been behind the Heath Bank attack

on the children of your predecessor's PPO.

No way I'm giving the Metropolitan Police access to my organization--

-It's not your decision. You answer to me. -We all answer to someone.

-Stay down here, Grace. Grab a coffee. -Sir.

[knocking]

Thank you.

Uh... drink?

David Budd ambushed me at my constituency surgery.

David Budd?

I'm convinced he's aware of the kompromat.

-How? -How the hell should I know?

All we've got is what the PM told us, not the whole story, knowing how he rolls.

-[sighs] -Julia blackmailed him over its content.

Possibly she took Budd into her confidence, or he joined the dots.

[sighs]

[door opens]

Mr. Macdonald.

PS Budd. Hi.

Sorry, I've...

-I've got to get to work. -There's people that start the war

and the poor bastards that end up in the line of fire.

-I'm sure you realize the net's closing. -Look, I haven't a clue...

Really, I've got to get to work.

I've looked into the eyes of a suicide bomber.

Tahir Mahmood, he was just some flunky terrified of fucking up his boss's speech,

but you... you made a point of not being there that day and you called Tahir

and made him go up on stage.

That all seems like a calculated sequence of events to me.

Did you come up with it on your own?

Look, I've... I've been through everything with SO15.

No, you lied about everything to SO15. It's time to start telling the truth.

Are you threatening me?

[groans]

Julia was murdered in cold blood and I know you were part of it.

-I had nothing to do-- -Tell SO15 what you know.

-SO15, do it. -[groans]

Be redundant for me to say I know where you live.

Boss, you'll never guess who just waltzed in to make a voluntary statement.

I need to provide some background.

Uh, till recently...

I, Mike Travis, senior civil servants...

Julia Montague involved us all in Home Office business. Standard practice.

Then there began to be these frequent unofficial meetings

with the Director-General of the Security Service

and, to an increasing degree, we were all shut out.

It's still unclear to me the nature of their meetings.

[Sharma] Okay.

Then we came to suspect that Julia was preparing a leadership bid.

Who's we?

Um, Mike Travis, uh, Roger Penhaligon.

Mike... Mike Travis,

formerly Minister of State for Counter- Terrorism, now Acting Home Secretary.

-Roger Penhaligon, Government Chief Whip. -Thank you.

When Julia decided to go ahead with her speech at St. Matthew's College,

despite security advice, we realized we had to act fast.

[Sharma] Act? In what way?

To prevent her from starting a potentially damaging leadership contest.

[stammers] I was told we needed to embarrass Julia politically.

-Told by who? -That came from Roger Penhaligon.

I'm telling the whole truth when I say that my... my only intention

was to embarrass Julia.

No way would I want to see her harmed in any way.

[Sharma] So, what did you do?

I inserted inaccurate material in her speech...

the idea being that she'd immediately become embroiled

in a humiliating climb-down.

[inhales] And to make sure the plot couldn't be retraced to me,

and hence to Mike and Roger, I made an excuse not to attend the speech

and advised Julia that, uh, all the fact-checking

would be handled by Tahir Mahmood.

We had this idea to use Tahir to create, uh, an embarrassing moment on camera...

something that would go viral and derail her campaign before it even got started.

This was the phone call to Mahmood suggesting he go on stage and interrupt

-the Home Secretary's speech? -Yes.

But it has been established that Tahir Mahmood venturing onto the stage

could have triggered the device.

Yes, but none of us... none of us knew anything about the bomb.

[stammers] I certainly didn't. It was all about the politics.

[Sharma] So, why make a point of giving Mahmood the briefcase?

I didn't want him examining the documents till it was too late, so...

so I handed him a closed briefcase at the very last minute,

reassuring him that the contents didn't need to be reviewed.

Firstly, the briefcase has been shown not to contain an improvised explosive device.

Secondly, all your forensic investigations

have found no explosive residue on my client, at his home, or place of work.

[Sharma] Let's be clear, Mr. Macdonald. Was everyone involved in this plot

to embarrass the Home Secretary unaware Tahir Mahmood might set off a bomb?

Of course. We're politicians. We're not murderers.

You worked closely with Julia Montague, didn't you?

Yes.

Yet you were prepared to stab her in the back?

No, it wasn't like that.

It was... It was all for the sake of party unity.

He didn't give us anything on the kompromat.

Doubt he was ever in the loop.

Roger and Mike played the party-unity card, Rob rolled over.

-Didn't seem like he believed it himself. -He didn't.

-He had his own reason. -What?

I witnessed the Home Secretary reject Rob's advances a couple of times.

Humiliated him. He wanted to do the same to her.

I think he's telling the truth.

[indistinct chattering]

Budd's wife's been at work all day. She's just returning now.

Unfortunately, RPOs guard the safe house round the clock.

Then we're forced to be bold.

[phone rings]

Ops.

Boss is back.

He's on his way.

How'd it go at the Home Office?

Fortunately, while the kompromat's out there, there isn't a politician

not shitting himself he's implicated. Makes it easier to push back.

Good.

Only problem is they know about you... Longcross.

That will be David Budd.

He's the only one who challenged me,

-the only one I gave that name to. -Some fucking bullet-stopper.

How could you let him get one over on you?

No.

It's the other way round.

-David. -Ma'am.

Come in. Thanks for coming in at short notice. Have a seat.

Unfortunately, this was something that couldn't wait.

Um, I've received an extremely serious allegation

regarding unprofessional intimacy between you and the late Home Secretary.

-Who's making this allegation? -I'm not at liberty to say.

They allege something went on in private? I can't see how there's any evidence.

-In which case, you can't give credence-- -There's a recording.

This is coming from the Security Service?

Longcross must've bugged her room.

-Is this recording even legal? -David, is it true?

Ma'am, you know you have to caution me if my answer might incriminate me.

-I'm entitled to a consultation with my-- -Don’t quote the regs at me.

You weren’t fucking the Home Secretary. You’re fucking our whole reputation.

They’re to discredit me, ma’am!

I’m onto them, the Security Service, Longcross, all of them!

All of who?

There’s been leaks right through this investigation.

The Home Secretary’s itinerary, my kids’ school, the bomb at St Matthew’s,

the Security Service could have done it all.

David, you’ve been through a lot.

Take time off. Stop ruffling feathers.

Then maybe, just maybe, I can make this go away.

They want me to go away.

[sighs]

-Dave. -Sorry, Vic.

I... wanted to talk away from the kids.

-What’s up? -There's something going on at work.

I don't know if it's going to come out, but you’ve got a right to know as my wife.

Okay.

Julia and I... we were having an affair.

What do you want me to say?

I don’t want you to say anything.

[clears throat] Look, I’ve got to get to hand-over, so...

By the way, you’re a day late.

Come again?

Yesterday, a security officer came up to the ward.

He said that you and the Home Secretary were very close.

What security officer?

Said he was looking into the circumstances surrounding her death.

What the hell's a security officer? Was this bloke police, or what?

I’m not sure.

Was he plain-clothes? A detective? Did he give a name?

-Um, not that I remember. -For God's sake!

What were you thinking, not getting a name?

-I couldn’t help him and then he left. -All right, he’ll be on CCTV.

Um, ward D-20, 2:00, 2:30.

And what did he say exactly?

Stuff about when you were coming home after your shifts...

If... you’d ever brought anything back to put somewhere safe.

If you’d ever brought anything back belonging to the Home Secretary.

He even asked if the Home Secretary had ever visited.

That him?

[Vicky] Yeah.

Look, Vicky, thanks. I need to get on with things, before it’s too late.

Well, who is he? What is this all about?

-The less you know, the better. -Are we in any danger?

You’re in a safe house with protection. You'll be fine.

Then why did you say “before it’s too late”?

No reason.

[Rayburn] The device planted at St. Matthew’s College,

we’ve got gaps in the CCTV from the night before.

How that happened and how the offenders by-passed security, we still don’t know.

Same goes for how the bomb wasn’t detected,

despite searches of the venue right up to a few minutes before the attack.

Andrew Apsted, we need more on him,

who he grew up with, who he joined the army with, who he served with.

And where did he get that rifle?

-Guys, okay if we pick this up later? -No worries, Sarge.

He wasn’t just at the internet café. He visited my wife’s ward.

My God.

Cheers. We’ll... We'll look into it.

Look. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any CCTV at the internet café,

but I’m guessing that’s why you went there in the first place.

We’re still checking all the cameras in the vicinity.

Overheard you talking about Thornton Circus.

We’ve learned Apsted formed a pressure group called Veterans’ Peace Group.

-So he was on a watch list? -No.

The group was marginal, never threatened any action, but you’re right.

It’s weird he wasn’t... which brings us back to your Security Service theory.

Maybe they didn't put him on a watch list to keep him under the radar.

He was recruited by them?

Disaffected loner with explosives experience?

Talk about a perfect candidate.

I know how stretched you are here. Let me look into this.

We’ve already had a conversation about how fit you are to work.

The moment this case is over, I’ll see the counselor.

I’ll see the doc, whatever. I just need time.

Please, I’m asking you as a colleague, copper to copper.

Thanks, Louise.

-Blast from the past. -Took a few calls to get your new number.

I’m here.

So, what have you got?

A Makarov. Nice bit of kit.

I can get you six more.

-How much? -Not how much, what.

A PSL, with no history, traceable back to me.

-Fine. I’ll take my business elsewhere. -Maybe I can make a couple of calls.

[distant rumble of thunder]

But this... this is going to take work.

-I’m not making no promises. -I get that back when we do the trade.

Or I come looking.

Not answering your phone?

Sorry, I must’ve...

-Battery’s dead. -You want to get a refund

-the amount of time it's switched off. -There something can I help you with?

CCTV from your wife’s ward was deleted. Same as The Blackwood and St. Matthew’s.

None of the cameras near the internet café picked up anything.

They know how to avoid 'em.

I do have something, though.

Security camera at your wife’s safe house.

They identified themselves as SO15 officers.

By the time the RPO alerted anyone of her suspicions, they’d carried out a search.

-Security Service. -Obviously. This means the safe house

has been compromised, but there is nothing to suggest your family are in danger.

Remember when I told you someone broke into my flat. Do you believe me now?

Yeah.

They’re convinced the kompromat wasn’t with the Home Secretary

at the time of the explosion. It’s still out there.

They seem sure if anyone knows where it's hidden, you do. Why’s that, David?

I don’t know.

Julia Montague’s home was thoroughly searched, all her devices seized.

-There’s no tablet found. -I'm sorry I can’t help you.

I don’t know what happened to it.

The Security Service believe you know where it is, so do I.

I’ll see you at Julia Montague’s flat, 08:00 tomorrow.

Cheers.

Apart from the seized devices, the search team left everything.

You know the layout better than anyone.

Maybe you’ll spot something that stands out.

If you really think this will help.

She had a computer in here.

We’ve gone through the hard drive with a fine-tooth comb.

[sighs]

[sighs]

Tom, you’re driving me up the wall. Shit or get off the pot, mate.

Oh, sorry, ma’am.

Come in.

Now, what’s up?

[sighs]

I’m the last person to dob in a skipper, ma’am.

But...

David Budd... he’s got this head wound,

and everyone’s letting him walk around like nothing happened.

Sit down.

[woman] Cappuccino for Anna!

David?

Chanel.

Hey.

Hi.

Something wrong?

Oh, my God! Of course there is.

I was never Julia’s biggest fan, but I was genuinely so sorry to hear what happened.

God, you must still be in shock.

Uh, I’m all right.

-Maybe I shouldn’t have come over. -No, I’m sorry. Uh...

Is this a regular haunt of yours?

Oh! [laughs] Always the policeman.

Never off-duty. Yes, I’ve been here before.

-No, I’m not stalking you. -Sorry.

[Chanel laughs]

-How are you doing? -Yeah. All right. Moved on.

I’m still looking for the right opportunity, but, um, yeah.

It’s a tricky time, so...

Actually, I wanted to say I'm really sorry for causing such a scene when I was fired.

[both laugh]

That was the last thing you needed but thank you for being such a sweetheart.

You’re very welcome.

I wanted to thank you properly, but your phone was out of service.

I had to get a new one.

Just 'cause I was going to suggest a drink if...

My treat.

Sure.

-Yeah? -Yes.

-[both laugh] -Okay.

-Um... 0-7-7-0-0... -Mm.

-Yep. -...9-0-0-4-3-1.

-[phone dings] -And that’s mine.

-[woman] Chai tea latte for Sam. -Oh, that’s me.

Sam?

Saves the palaver of them trying to spell my name. [laughs]

-Great to see you, David. -You too, Chanel.

-There. -Thank you so much.

[tense sigh]

Chanel Dyson was the late Home Secretary’s PR, until she was fired.

I witnessed her being picked up outside the Home Office in this same Range Rover.

I ran the registration at the time.

Found out it's owned by a company based in the Cayman Islands.

-Rich girl gets top job. Shocker. -That’s what I thought at the time.

I’ve been thinking over everyone who had the inside track

on the Home Secretary, who could have compromised her security.

To kill a Cabinet minister? Think of the people that would have had

to turn a blind eye, to not do their jobs properly.

Some may have been zealots, but plenty others would just have taken a pay-off

or asked no questions, and that takes money, or intimidation, lots.

Maybe it wasn’t all down to the Security Service after all.

The male subject has been identified as Luke Aikens.

Aikens is believed to be a senior figure in organized criminal enterprises.

Everyone focused on the counter-terrorism aspect of RIPA-18.

But enhanced surveillance on phone and email activity

would be just as big a threat to organized crime.

[sighs]

No such thing as coincidences.

Why is Chanel and, by extension, Luke Aikens, making contact with you?

Don’t know, Louise.

-Sorry, is this a bad time? -No worse than any other.

-Mm. They said it was all right. -[David] What’s up, mate?

-Craddock’s trying to get hold of you. -Okay.

I’ll drive you.

Your repeated refusal to accept counseling has raised concerns

regarding your fitness for duty.

And now I’ve received an extremely disturbing report

regarding the possibility you’ve attempted self-injury with a firearm.

What report? Who from?

David, I recognize an officer in denial when I see one.

This is for your own good. You’re to go on indefinite leave as of now--

Ma’am, no--

I would strongly urge you to accept treatment from Occupational Health.

Ma’am, I can’t be removed from duty till I’ve found who killed Julia Montague.

I’m also removing your firearms ticket, for obvious reasons.

I’m very sorry, David.

This is for your own good.

Neil.

Need your blue card, mate.

Signature, please.

We’re looking for a link with Luke Aikens,

-or any of his associates. -[phone rings]

I’m sorry.

Give me a minute, guys.

You fucked me over.

-What are you talking about? -Don’t play dumb.

-I trusted you! -I don’t know what...

[phone bleeps]

Sergeant David Budd, Metropolitan Police.

British Transport Police have put out an alert on a possible suicide bomber.

[breathes heavily]

Don't do that, please! Just stay still. Stay still.

-[Nadia] You have children? -Yes, I do. Two.

That's Ella. She's ten. Charlie, he's eight.

[Andrew Marr] The government is intent on forcing through a beefed-up

Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, RIPA-18,

as it's been dubbed, spearheaded by you.

Only those intent on acts of violence have anything to fear.

I want you right beside me,

not because it's your job... but because it's our choice.

This is a very, very dangerous politician, someone who must be stopped.

Despite the heroic efforts of our emergency services...

the Home Secretary, Julia Montague, succumbed to her injuries

and was pronounced dead a short while ago.

[gunshot]

Someone tampered with my gun.

-The police searched your flat. -If they found an illegal firearm,

they'd seize it. They wouldn't change the bullets for blanks.

The PM's asked me to step up to Acting Home Secretary.

Now, it goes without saying, I'd never wish in a million years

to assume this role under these circumstances.

There's a simple, plausible story for you to stick to,

and you will stick to it.

Finally, we've got your shooter, Sergeant Andrew Apsted.

Served in Helmand Province, two tours. This could be the original bomb-maker.

The war in the desert, we've brought it back to the streets of Britain.

Andrew Apsted, we need more on him,

who he joined the Army with, who he served with.

And where did he get that rifle?

A PSL with no history traceable back to me.

Maybe I can make a couple of calls.

-I thought they were sending you a cab -Yeah, I don't need their shitty cab.

Chanel Dyson was the late Home Secretary's PR, until she was fired.

Thank you for being a sweetheart that day.

-You're very welcome. -'Cause I was going to suggest a drink.

The male subject has been identified as Luke Aikens.

Aikens is believed to be a senior figure in organized criminal enterprises.

Nadia, we're desperate to find the person who's been creating these devices.

Is this the man your husband met?

-Only problem is they know about you. -That'll be David Budd.

He's the one who challenged me.

A few days before she was killed, the Home Secretary received a visit from Longcross.

He supplied her with a file of kompromat

she shared with the Prime Minister.

She offered them greater powers in return for the compromising material.

A series of scandals, all covered up,

a sexual assault, drug addiction,

financial impropriety.

Last night, I learned they relate to the Prime Minister.

The kompromat wasn't with the Home Secretary at the time of the explosion.

It's still out there.

They seem pretty sure if anyone knows where it's hidden, you do.

Julia Montague's home was thoroughly searched, all of her devices seized.

There was no tablet found.

[news report #1] Six long weeks have passed since the incident

that triggered the current terror alert.

[news report #2] The Metropolitan Police remain on the highest level of vigilance,

responding to terror alerts on a daily basis, most of them false alarms.

[news report #3] Police and Security Service MI5 stand

at an almost unprecedented level of alertness to a home-grown terror threat.

Yet still, there have been no further arrests, no breakthrough,

and the assassination of Home Secretary Julia Montague...

[turns radio off]

[phone bleeps]

[Chanel] Hey, David, it's Chanel. Um, it was really lovely to run into you.

I meant it about that drink. Maybe...

[ringing tone]

[Chanel] David. I was getting worried you were never going to call me back.

Anything to play hard to get.

[Chanel laughs] Uh, well, let's meet up. I know just the place.

[drill whirs]

Ma'am.

As you were.

-Ma'am. -Deepak.

-Sorry, nobody told me-- -I wanted an update.

Yes, ma'am. We've now interviewed all the security staff on duty

the night before the bombing at St. Matthew's College.

They all claim not to have witnessed any kind of break-in or intruder.

-Claim? -The bomb didn't plant itself, ma'am.

Maybe we're looking at bribery and/or intimidation.

They also needed access to CCTV to delete part of the recording.

-This sounds like a new line of inquiry. -Yes, ma'am.

Luke Aikens. We're exploring whether he played a role

in the assassination of the Home Secretary.

Possible motivation: to prevent increased scrutiny into criminal communications.

-RIPA-18? -Yes, ma'am.

Aikens is a significant player in organized crime.

As you know, ma'am, he's always successfully avoided criminal charges.

As I know?

Uh, yes. I saw in the file. You led the Organized Crime Unit.

Across the investigations into Aikens' activities.

That was some time ago. Why wasn't I informed about this new line of inquiry?

-I'm sorry, ma'am-- -Who initiated it?

I'm acting on information from David Budd.

Every step forward, we take one back.

Something happen, boss?

There's always been whispers Luke Aikens had senior officers in his pocket...

officers prepared to sabotage investigations into his criminal empire.

Our officers?

There's so much of the Home Secretary's assassination we can't put together.

A lot of it can be explained if, all along, there's been an inside man...

or woman.

[dance music]

You made it.

Never one to turn down a free drink.

We have a table downstairs, if that's okay.

-It's your manor, your rules. -What would you like to drink?

-Uh, a beer's fine, please. -Oh.

Cheap date. The same again, please, but we'll have them downstairs.

[barmaid] Sure, Chanel.

-Welcome to my manor. -Actually, it was good running into you.

Because here we are.

That, too.

Uh, when you finished at the Home Office, I heard a few things.

-About me? -Yeah, about you.

They were always beefing me. What was it this time?

Your money comes from companies registered offshore.

So?

I think there was a concern these companies weren't fully legit.

Listen, David, you're not a business person, and I'm certainly not.

I have clever people to do all that for me,

so we could sit here and talk about corporate law all night

-and neither of us would be any the wiser. -Fair point.

[both giggle]

Paid for with Nazi gold.

[he chuckles]

Thank you.

-Cheers. -Cheers.

-What? -Just trying to figure you out.

Well, depending on who you talk to, I'm either deceptively deep...

or deceptively shallow.

Either way, you're deceptive.

What's wrong?

I'm sorry.

Well?

Uh, belt on the right-hand side.

[Luke] We don't normally allow coppers.

We definitely don't allow them.

Makarov, is that right?

Looks like someone's been talking.

You go around asking for a PSL, it's going to come to my attention.

You supply Andy Apsted?

Tell me one thing.

He come to you, or did you go to him?

Well, here's a question for you.

Is that thing loaded?

What do you think?

It's what it's loaded with that matters.

You swapped in the blanks?

[David grunts]

[grunts]

Apologies, everyone. The lad's just had too much to drink.

Try not to let it spoil your evening.

Sarge, you're gonna want to log in to Thornton Circus.

-We've got something on Andrew Apsted. -Yeah?

[sighs, strikes desk]

Boss. We've completed cross-checks

on everyone Andrew Apsted served alongside with in the army.

Apsted was posted to Helmand Province with 16 Engineer Regiment in 2009.

Now, there were a number of operations carried out

alongside the Royal Albion Regiment.

And serving in the Royal Albion at that time was, um...

[sighs]

...was David Budd.

-Shit. -[slaps papers on desk]

Yeah. Yeah, it gets worse.

Budd went back to Julia Montague's house and broke in via the back entrance.

That's unguarded. I mean, he appears to have keys.

He must've got them cut when he was her PPO, which is suspicious enough in itself.

He was on the premises for minutes, which means he knew exactly what he was after.

Yeah. The kompromat.

You were right, boss.

There's been an inside man all along.

-The fucker has played me since day one. -He's played us all!

We're going to be the ones to bring him in.

Let's find the bastard.

[Control] Observations for a male wanted in connection with the murder

of Julia Montague.

Police Sergeant David Budd, IC1 male, early 30s, dark hair.

Subject may be armed and is extremely dangerous.

Repeat, David Budd is to be treated as extremely dangerous.

[breathes heavily]

[gasps]

[gasps]

[nearby siren wails]

[pants softly]

[grunts softly]

[pants softly]

-[pants softly] -[door bangs]

Mrs. Budd, do you know the name, Andrew Apsted?

No.

Apsted and David served in Afghanistan together.

Apsted had a history of post-traumatic stress and took his own life.

One of our current lines of inquiry is Apsted and your husband were accomplices

in the Thornton Circus attempt on the Home Secretary's life.

-No... No. Dave would never-- -David has lied.

And lied to all of us... you included.

And our priority now is to bring him safely into custody.

Has he said anything to you that might shed some light on his plans?

Um... Well, he did say one thing the last time I saw him,

which really worried me.

He said, um, he needed to act now before it was too late.

I... Is he in danger?

I believe what David meant by "before it's too late" is before his link

to Andrew Apsted was detected.

Hence all the lies and the betrayals.

Now, I'd like you to accompany me to Walworth Police Station

to help with our inquiries, okay?

Vicky, Ella and Charlie are safe and well, no sightings of David.

We've dispatched an officer to the school for safeguarding purposes.

No. Dave would never hurt the kids. Never.

Who would he hurt?

Madam, don't be alarmed. Please, can I use your telephone?

Please, I just need some help, ma'am, please.

Madam, stop, police officer.

I understand the state I look. My name's Police Sergeant David Budd.

-Do you have a mobile telephone, please? -Uh...

All I need you to do is call 999 and hold the phone on speaker,

so I can contact the police operator. The call's free of charge.

Madam, it's an emergency. Please.

Thank you.

[ringing tone]

[operator] Emergency, which service do you require?

-Police. -Putting you through now.

[woman] Police. What is your emergency?

PS David Budd, using a member of the public's phone.

I am status zero on... Saltmarsh Street.

-Can you confirm your name, please? -Police Sergeant David Budd.

Units are on their way, PS Budd.

Please return the phone to the member of the public.

What's going on?

Shit.

[woman] Obs on David Budd. Saltmarsh Street.

Received. Saltmarsh Street, blue-light it.

[siren wails]

[tires squeal]

-What's going on? -I need your full cooperation, Vicky.

This could turn into a negotiation situation.

[siren wails]

[sirens wail]

Control, Trojan, stand by for sit rep.

Did you see where he went?

-[sirens wail] -Extend the search outwards.

Come with me. Trojan, sit rep.

-[police radio] -Unarmed. Clear to enter.

[sirens wail]

-Sarge. -PS Mason, ma'am.

Lorraine Craddock, Budd's boss. I hope I can talk him into cooperating.

-Ma'am. -[approaching siren]

Ma'am, DS Rayburn, SO15. I've got Budd's wife with me.

[gasps]

I'm cooperating. Don't shoot!

Armed police! Hands in the air!

-Don't shoot! -Hands in the air!

-I can't. -[Craddock] David, please do as we say!

-No one needs to get hurt! -I need to explain.

-[officer] Raise your hands! -[Craddock] David, please raise your hand!

[officer] Final warning!

Raise... your... hands...

-Shit! -Pull back!

Clear the area!

David, don't move!

-Stay perfectly still! -It's a dead man's switch.

Anything happens to me, it'll go off.

-[Trojan] Control, active message. -Go ahead, Trojan.

I didn't do this! You need to believe me!

Subject armed with PBIED. Require safe route.

-We need Expo here and a negotiator. -Ma'am.

Charlie Yankee Five Seven, request Expo and Negotiator to Saltmarsh Street.

I didn't do this. I was put in this vest!

-Get him away from all these buildings. -Agreed.

[sirens wail]

We need to move you to a less built-up area!

-It's a DMS. Don't shoot! -You need you to comply.

I am complying! Do not shoot!

Turn around slowly with your hands in the air.

[Control] Trojan, route via Saltmarsh Mews.

-[officer] Wait! -[breathes heavily]

Taking the street to your right, walk there slowly now.

[breathes heavily]

Control from Trojan, active message. Request directions to safe area.

-Just keep moving. No sudden moves. -[Control] Destination is Pope Square.

Approximately 500 meters southwest--

Armed Police, get back!

[Control] Left turn into Pope Lane.

Followed by right turn into Pope Square. Traffic control and air ops

covering the route.

[officer] Received. Keep walking.

Sir, we're just tapping into the CCTV camera now.

-[sirens wail] -Get out of the park!

Keep it moving!

[officer] Keep moving, as far away from the buildings as possible.

[sirens wail]

[officer] Keep moving! Clear the area.

Keep moving! Everyone keep moving.

Control, Trojan, subject now confined to Pope Square.

Require critical-shot authorization.

[control] Received, stand by.

He says it's trigger-activated. Are we safe to get a radio to him?

-Ma'am? -If we're going to get him to surrender,

we'll need to be able to talk.

David, I'm going to lay the radio down for you, okay?

Do not move yet!

Okay!

[sirens and helicopter]

Bring the wife, just in case, okay?

Got the radio? Cheers.

Stay still until I tell you!

Okay.

Pick up the radio!

Back to back on two.

David, please listen to me very carefully.

I really hope this can be resolved with no one getting hurt.

For your own sake, for your family and colleagues,

please give yourself up.

Ma'am, I've tried to remove the vest. It's booby-trapped with coax connectors

across the clasps. They're wired to the control unit.

I give you my solemn promise...

Your previous good service and the effect of your recent traumatic experiences

will be taken into account.

Ma'am, you're not listening to me. I was knocked unconscious.

When I came round, I was in this vest with my thumb taped to the DMS.

David, you've got to be straight with us. You hid your relationship with Apsted.

You hid your involvement in Julia Montague's assassination.

I had nothing to do with Julia's assassination! Nothing!

I tried to save her!

David, you've betrayed everyone's trust.

We won't be fooled again.

I'm telling the truth!

I'm sorry, David. I did my best for you.

What? Your best? What are you doing?

-This is an SO15 operation. -Ma'am, what are you doing?

[Rayburn] David, let's try and stay calm.

-[breathes heavily] -David, are you receiving me?

Vic, get away from here!

-Dave, they want me here. -Get away!

Just get Expo here, Louise. Please, get me out of this thing.

Stay still and keep your hands where we can see them.

My hand is on the DMS. What's the matter with you? Are you blind?

No, David.

I'm being set up! The people that did this to me, they're the ones who killed Julia!

Okay, David.

Louise, I know I betrayed your trust. I lied about Andy Apsted.

If I'd come clean, I'd have been the fall guy.

The people that really killed Julia would've gotten away with it.

I didn't want to lie. I had to!

-David, please just do what they say! -She's fine.

David, you need help, please!

Vic, I'm telling the truth!

-[Control] Trojan, Control. -Go ahead, Control.

Message from SFC. Critical shot authorized.

Received.

Line of fire, behind me.

I know I lied, I hid things, but you have to understand,

I had nothing to do with Andy trying to kill Julia.

Nothing to do with the bomb that killed her. I wanted to know who did it.

I don't know who did it. It was Security Service,

organized crime, terrorism, that's what I was trying to find out.

-[radio chatter] -[officer] Pictures up.

[Control] Also an SO15 DS awaiting Silver to be, status six.

[Sharma] Control, Silver seconds away.

-[Hunter-Dunn] Get me live with the field. -Sir.

-[David] I know you think I'm lying. -Any RT revealing what he's told them?

-No, sir. -Get this blown up.

-Sir. -[David] ...the conspiracy to kill Julia.

[David, distantly] There were security pictures of St. Matthew's College.

They knew about the Home Secretary's itinerary.

-[officer] By me, sir. -Silver, status six.

Control, received.

-Boss. -Any idea what explosive's in the device?

Not yet, no, boss. I wouldn't hold much store in Budd's answers either.

It's been a stream of bullshit since day one!

All right, Louise, I hear you, but let's lower the temperature.

-What channel? -Two.

David, Deepak Sharma, receiving?

Receiving.

What can you tell us about the PBIED?

It resembles the device worn by Nadia Ali during the 1st of October attack.

How can you be so sure?

I saw hers up close before it was con-exed.

The HE, the detonators, the control unit.

Mine appear exactly the same.

You understand our doubts here, mate?

Our inquiries led us to the probability of an inside man in the force,

who conspired in the security breaches to assassinate the Home Secretary.

I'm not the inside man!

But here you are, wearing the exact same PBIED employed by an active terror cell.

This is how it happened, sir. I was contacted by Chanel Dyson.

She set a trap. I was ambushed by Luke Aikens and put into this vest,

to frame me, to point the finger away from organized crime.

You keep asking us to believe you

and now you tell us you're arranging a secret meeting with one of the suspects.

I was trying to trace Andy Apsted's PSL rifle! It was supplied by Luke Aikens.

-It was his men that broke into my flat. -Why do you think that, David?

I used a pistol I brought back from Afghanistan as bait.

Luke knew all about it. Knew it'd been tampered with.

Look. Ask Vic! She knows.

She knows. She'll prove I'm telling the truth.

Vicky, will you tell them?

[sighs] He's telling the truth.

The pistol, someone tampered with the bullets, replaced them with blanks.

How do you know?

[sighs] After the Home Secretary died, David tried to shoot himself.

Why would Dave try and shoot himself with a blank, unless he didn't realize

-the gun had been tampered? -[siren blares]

Thank you.

Clearly we need to look into this, but we're being told

you're suicidal and now here you are in a suicide vest.

No, no, no! That's not it. That's not the point here!

Where's this pistol now, mate? You got it with you?

No. Luke's men seized it before they fitted the vest. Forget the pistol.

The blank rounds are proof. They are hidden in my flat.

Maybe you can pull DNA, prints from them to link it back to Luke's men.

All this evidence you've kept hidden.

We know you broke into Julia Montague's flat.

-Led me up the garden path on that, too. -I am sorry about that, Louise.

I had to. I couldn't risk what I found being common knowledge.

Why, David? Why couldn't you trust your colleagues?

Because of the conspiracy! Because of the Security Service!

I found where Julia hid the kompromat.

-Phone. -[David] The tablet.

[Sharma] Where is it, David?

My flat, downstairs, in the bathroom above a spotlight.

Budd's flat. Downstairs bathroom. Above a spotlight.

Seconds away.

Budd's flat. Turn right.

[horn blasts]

Do you give consent to search?

Yes, sir.

[Sharma] I need a search team to David Budd's address immediately.

[David] Look at me.

[mouths]

They're changing radio channels!

Security Service may be monitoring this. Do not share via regular channels.

Advise search team not to tamper with the spotlight. Hold back from entering.

[shot, clattering]

-[Sharma] Received. -What's the message? What's Budd say?

Sorry, sir, they're too quick for us.

[screams and groans]

[siren blares]

[gasps and groans]

[groaning]

[policeman] Armed police! Get down on the ground!

-Hands where I can see them. -On the ground!

-Search him! -Don't move!

[shrieking]

One in custody.

-Matching e-fit of Richard Longcross. -Oh...

[sighs]

Fuck.

Hold Expo!

They need to get this thing off me!

I would if I could, mate, but you know the drill.

There's a risk you'll trigger the device and take us with you.

I don't want anyone here getting hurt!

My hand's aching on this DMS!

I want to talk to my wife.

It might be the last chance I get. Please.

Go set-to-set on three.

Press here when you want to talk.

I've let you down, Vic, I know that, but on our children's lives,

I'm not a traitor, I had nothing to do with Julia's murder.

I'm sorry for what I've put you through.

I'm sorry I've stopped being the man you married.

I've tried to explain,

but... part of me never wants to explain what the war did to me.

Look, I never wanted it to touch you, or us... but it has.

I tried to stop it, but I couldn't.

[sobs softly]

I've failed as a husband, and as a father, and that's the worst thing.

I'm sorry. [he sobs softly]

[sighs in exasperation]

Help him! Why won't you help him?

[buzz of helicopter]

Please!

Let me examine the device, sir.

-Okay. -Thank you, thank you!

Ballistic shields.

[exhales]

[helicopter buzzes and sirens wail]

[officer] With me.

Any sudden moves, any shout from me...

take him out.

Hold.

My name's Daniel Chung.

I'm going to begin by examining this device.

Thank you.

I'm David.

David, remain perfectly still with your hands facing me.

Apart from the dead man's switch, are there any other initiation devices?

To the best of my knowledge, no. [breathes heavily]

David, keep pressure on the DMS.

I need you to turn very slowly, through 360 degrees,

so I can inspect the whole device.

[anxious breathing]

Thank you.

I don't see any hidden initiation devices.

Now I'm gonna carry out a closer examination.

[David sniffles]

Please remain completely still maintaining pressure on the DMS.

I will.

[Daniel] The coax wires across the clasps are wired into the control unit.

I'm going to examine the control unit now.

Please remain perfectly still for me, David, maintaining pressure on the DMS.

[anxious breathing]

David, I've completed my examination. Now I need to confer with my colleagues.

Stay here, remaining perfectly still and keep maintaining pressure on the DMS.

No. Come back.

Come back.

[siren wails]

[both] Ma'am.

Great work on getting Longcross into custody. Well done.

Budd's device appears to be the work of the original bomb-maker.

[sobs]

It's impossible to tell if he put it on himself or someone did it to him.

I read the report on the 1/10 device. This is equally sophisticated.

Can it be defused?

I can try, but there's an extremely high risk of detonation.

What's happening?

[sighs] This is Anne Sampson, David. Tell us, are there other bombers at large?

Not that I know of.

Are further attacks planned?

I don't know.

-Who built the device you're wearing? -Ma'am, this wasn't my doing.

I don't know who built it.

We've got no idea of the power of the device or how long he can hold the DMS.

Added to which, Budd's got a history of deception

and is highly likely to be the inside man who's enabled this conspiracy.

[anxious breathing]

Get everyone to pull back outside the cordons and we'll re-spin the wheel.

-Deepak. -Ma'am.

Everyone, pull back!

Pull back.

David.

Please!

Mrs. Budd.

I'm innocent! Please!

You're killing me!

Pull back to a safe distance, please.

[softly] I love you.

See what she's up to? All the easier to pin everything on David when he's dead.

She's the one with links to Luke Aikens.

Quick as you can.

[frustrated sob]

If I stay put, she'll order the shot. If I run, the same.

-[pants] -No! Stop!

-Stop her! -[grunts]

Vicky, No!

-Hold fire! -It's too dangerous.

-It's Charlie and Ella losing both of us. -I believe you, that you're innocent.

This gives you a chance to prove it.

Trojan to TFC, subject's wife now in close proximity to device.

[TFC] Trojan, TFC, SFC rescinds critical shot.

Off aim!

[sighs]

Budd to Sampson.

Sampson.

I'll lead you to the evidence that proves I'm telling the truth.

Stay where you are.

What now?

Stay close.

[sirens wail]

We walk.

[Sampson] David!

David!

David!

Mobile containment.

-A hundred meters rolling cordon. -Red team with me.

Get traffic control in place to create a safety corridor.

Ma'am.

Help us out here, mate. Where you going?

My flat. Long walk ahead.

[news report] The incident began earlier this morning, with reports of a man

wearing a suicide vest causing a disturbance in Saltmarsh Street.

Specialist firearms officers of the Metropolitan Police's

counter-terrorism unit, SCO19, attended the incident within a few minutes

and the area was closed to the public. The incident...

You had the whole situation locked down.

We've got an innocent civilian in harm's way

and Budd claims to be leading us to crucial evidence.

He's making for his home address.

Armed units are in situ and residents are being evacuated.

Air Ops are also conducting neighborhood surveillance for possible associates.

-So far, none detected. -Then who's he working with?

We've established a link to Andrew Apsted,

-the Thornton Circus sniper. -I see.

...cross live to our security correspondent...

Ah!

[news report #2] The pictures you're watching here are being...

You never said you were including the Security Service.

Anne, Anne, we're all in this together.

[TV report continues in background]

Stephen...

You may be interested to hear my officers have taken into custody

a male suspect matching the e-fit of Richard Longcross.

We're currently exploring a number of lines of inquiry

in association with the suspect.

Such as places of work and seizure of communications devices.

I can neither confirm nor deny the suspect's identity...

but what I can confirm is that the requisite authorities apply,

which render his actions lawful. He should be released immediately.

There are certain actions for which there are no lawful authorities,

one being the assassination of a democratically elected secretary of state.

Anne, please!

Cool heads and cooperation.

This cooperation...

is it due to Budd's compromising material giving you both so much to lose

that you never want its existence revealed?

Because it would show the hand of the Security Service in a failed coup?

And despite your convincing assurances that the Home Office's role

in Julia Montague's death was purely accidental,

I wonder if the public will be equally convinced.

Anne, I think it's best if Stephen and I continue without you.

A woman was murdered.

A crime was committed.

My officers will investigate.

Thanks.

I've sought a court order for my officer's release.

Good.

Budd claims to hold crucial evidence.

He was working with the Thornton Circus sniper.

Andrew Apsted was a disturbed, embittered war veteran.

Not only does Budd fit the same profile,

he possessed all the inside know-how to overcome Julia's security.

No wider conspiracy involved.

[TV report continues in background]

Look no further for Julia's assassin.

[reporter] ...and an evacuation is taking place.

[siren blares]

[siren blares]

How are you doing?

My hand's in spasm.

You need to go inside. It's okay. It's completely safe.

Cupboard in the kitchen, there's some rope.

Rope? What for?

And a spade.

[sighs]

[sirens blare]

[pants]

Uh... there's something down here, like a black plastic bag.

That's it, Vic.

This is the evidence.

The original tablet containing the kompromat.

It'll prove the Security Service were involved.

The blank rounds smuggled into my pistol, they'll prove organized crime were, too.

[Sharma] Send Vicky to us with the evidence.

If I go, they can shoot you.

I don't know how much longer I can hold the DMS. This vest is crucial evidence.

The others got blown up. If forensics got a chance to examine this...

it might lead us back to the bomb maker.

-Prevent further attacks. -He's bargaining, boss. He's playing you.

Or he's giving us the chance to crack this case.

-I'll send Vicky to you with the evidence. -No, Dave, don't fall for it.

If you give me a chance to defuse this.

How do you know I'll keep my side?

I've been a soldier. I've been a copper.

You get to spot a bloke whose word's his bond.

You happy to let him try?

I wouldn't say happy. [sighs]

Robot.

Vicky.

How are things with your boyfriend?

Uh...

All right.

You deserve to be happy.

[anxious breathing]

I've laid out what you'll need.

The robot's coming up to you, so I can talk you through it.

Thank you.

Go.

[tearful breathing]

Question for DCI Sharma.

[Sharma] Go ahead.

Is Longcross talking yet?

I don't know.

It'd help, sir, if I knew this hadn't all been in vain.

-We'll get back to you on that. -To me, Vicky. Thanks.

I'll get an update on Longcross.

[whimpers softly]

[Daniel] We've got picture.

-Can you hear me? -Receiving.

Get Vicky away.

She shouldn't have to watch.

[Sharma] Mrs. Budd.

I'm not going to manage with one hand.

[Daniel] We'll start by freeing your left hand. You'll see a set of scissors.

Divide the tape over your thumb, creating two loose ends.

[anxious breathing]

Next, you'll see a non-ferrous spacer.

It looks like one of the piece in a game of draughts.

Slip the spacer under your thumb, being sure to maintain pressure on the trigger.

Being sure to maintain pressure, roll your thumb through 90 degrees.

So you can fold one of the free ends of tape down onto the spacer.

[anxious breathing]

The next stage is to roll your thumb

in the opposite direction over the piece of tape you've just secured...

maintaining pressure.

[frustrated grunt]

So that you can fold the other free end of tape to the spacer.

[pants]

If you're sure the tape is secure... you'll be able to remove your thumb.

[exhales]

[groans in relief]

Well done, David.

I'd suggest applying another couple of loops of tape to get the spacer

100% secure.

David, normally the best approach is to neutralize the power source.

But remember, with the 1/10 device, Fort Halstead found it was rigged

with multiple booby traps.

When the power was cut, the control unit triggered the detonators.

I'm convinced this is the same kind of device.

[both exhale]

Then you're going to have to neutralize the control unit itself.

I've already removed the cover successfully...

but there may be hidden trip wires.

Thanks, mate. That's given us a good view.

Now what do you suggest?

I doubt a device like this will be neutralized by cutting a wire.

A shunt might work.

Hence the croc clips and cable?

Yeah.

I can see a pair of relay blocks, serving the detonators.

I'm going to shunt between the two.

[sighs heavily]

[anxious breathing]

Right. I'm going to disconnect the power supply.

I'm cutting the first wire.

[breathes heavily]

[David breathes heavily over coms]

[pants]

[anxious groan]

[long sigh]

Put some tape over the ends.

-Question for DCI Sharma. -[Sharma] Go ahead.

Any news on Longcross?

Sir?

[Sharma] I'm very sorry, David. He had to be released.

Is that it? They just get away with it scot-free?

I'm going to cut the second wire. Everyone should get as far back as possible.

Everyone back! Take cover!

Fall back!

Get everyone right back!

[officer] Move back!

-Get right back! -[officer] Back! All of you move!

Okay.

[breathes heavily]

[frightened breathing]

[breathing echoes]

After him! Go! Go! Go!

[Sharma] No obs on Budd in the graveyard.

-[phone rings] -Widen the search. Lock off all--

[woman] Negative, no obs.

[man] Negative. We lost him.

-Minister. -Where's Budd?

I'm afraid I don't have that information at this time.

What's he up to?

In all probability, he's fleeing from justice.

And what if he's not?

[woman] David Budd could be armed and dangerous...

-That'll kill you. -Oh, my God!

So would a suicide vest.

Oh, my God! You're okay.

Like you give a shit.

I don't even know what to say to you. I'm so sorry.

Cooperate. You'll get immunity, witness protection. You'll be out.

I can't do that.

You're going to phone Luke, tell him the inside man's going to talk.

He's gonna want to silence him, he's gonna lead me straight to him.

Isn't Luke going to find that a bit suspicious?

It's what you did to me.

It's the only way to prove I'm innocent.

I'll drive.

Stay put.

[door slams]

Are you off somewhere?

None of your business. Talking of which--

I pay for results.

Budd is still out there. It's a basic rule, Lorraine.

If you're going to frame someone, you make it a dead bloke.

-It's hardly my fault. -No. But it's made you nervous.

[indistinct chattering]

[grunts]

On your knees! Hands on your head!

Are you fucking joking?

[gunshot]

[dog barks]

-Stand down, Sarge, that's an order! -I know about you two!

[dog barks]

On your knees!

Hands.

Hands.

[window opens]

[breathes heavily]

Did you kill her?

Did you kill Julia?

David, don't do this.

Tell me.

It was business.

David, don't.

Why? [pants]

Just good for business. It's nothing personal.

Nothing personal...?

David, don't!

[grunts angrily]

[grunt turns into yell]

[gunshot]

Don't look at me!

[Luke whimpers]

[grunts]

Call this in before I change my mind.

[breathes heavily]

It's over.

Chief Superintendent Craddock.

I need a firearms unit to my home address right away, please.

We've got prints back on your blank rounds.

They match known associates of Luke Aikens.

Why didn't they just steal your gun?

Straightaway, I'd have known they'd been in my flat.

They were trying to frame me.

Suppose they couldn't take the chance of leaving me with live rounds.

[police radio]

Cheers.

Great work, mate.

[Sharma] SO15 recorded interview with Chief Superintendent Lorraine Craddock

by DCI Sharma.

Describe the nature of your relationship with Luke Aikens.

[clears throat]

For some years, I've...

disclosed sensitive information on...

on police operations that might threaten his criminal activities.

[Sharma] What information did you disclose regarding the Home Secretary?

Her itinerary the day of the Thornton Circus attempt on her life.

[Sharma] Which Aikens passed to Andrew Apsted?

Luke recruited Apsted.

He armed him and...

used one of his captive businesses to, um...

enable Apsted to access Pascoe House as a tradesman.

[Sharma] And the St. Matthew's attack that resulted in the Home Secretary's death?

Um... [sobs]

Her itinerary.

Her security plans and procedures.

Luke was able to, um...

plan steps to overcome all of them.

What motivated Aikens to induce you to disclose this information?

[sighs]

Um...

[inhales deeply]

Luke found out Julia Montague was planning

to transfer powers to the Security Service, which would give them...

an upper hand, more of an upper hand against organized crime.

They're harder to contact, more shadowy. Therefore...

harder to bribe and blackmail.

Unlike corrupt officers such as yourself.

Aikens needed policing to stay with an organization he could manipulate.

[Sharma] Is there any connection with you

appointing David Budd as the Home Secretary's PPO?

Yes.

So he'd make the perfect fall guy.

[Sharma] And the Heath Bank attack?

Did you provide the confidential information on PS Budd's family?

No, never. I...

I'd never do anything like that to one of my team.

If she didn't do it, who did?

Lorraine Craddock, I will now be seeking the authority of the Crown Prosecutor...

There's one other person in this whole conspiracy that knew about my kids.

[Sharma] ...public office... conspiracy to murder.

Interview terminated.

[sobs]

[news report #1] Ten days since the assassination of Julia Montague...

[news report #2] The Metropolitan Police Counter-Terrorism Branch SO15 made

a number of arrests.

[news report #3] Arrests include a man in his 30s known to police...

[news report #2] Downing Street and the Home Office have welcomed

the police breakthrough in investigating the Home Secretary's assassination.

A Home Office spokesman said it was too early to make any comment.

David.

Good to go.

[Rayburn] The DIR is recording.

Nadia.

I'd like to start by asking you about David Budd.

Did you have any information regarding his children?

No.

Why are you asking me this?

Nadia, we've had significant breakthroughs in our inquiry.

There's only one piece of the puzzle left... and that's you.

Maybe you're just an innocent victim in all of this...

the pawn controlled by the real masterminds.

You can say no comment.

Is that true?

Are you just a victim?

David Budd made the same mistake.

He thought so little of me, he showed me pictures.

What do you mean, thought so little of you?

To him, I was a weak woman.

I remembered everything he told me about his children.

Their names... their ages.

From prison, I was able to inform my organization.

So they could launch an attack on his children's school?

Yes.

There's another finding I'd like to put to you.

We've able to examine the person-borne improvised explosive device

David Budd was forced to wear.

Forensic examination of the control unit's circuitry detected deposits

of your DNA and your fingerprints.

Why would that be?

Because I built the device.

I built all the bombs.

You all saw me as a poor, oppressed Muslim woman.

I am an engineer.

I am a jihadi.

[Rayburn] Which bombs?

The one used to kill the Home Secretary.

The one used to kill police officers at Heath Bank School.

The one I wore on the 1st of October.

So, you're telling us, this man didn't supply the bomb to your husband?

I invented that story because Police Sergeant Budd was so eager to believe it.

And so stupidly eager to believe me.

You made that up to mislead our inquiry?

How easy that was.

You are all so easy...

It wasn't just you, mate. We all fell for it.

Who planted the device at St. Matthew's College...

the one that killed the Home Secretary?

Non-believers.

Criminals.

[Rayburn] Luke Aikens?

Yes.

[Rayburn] Why did you conspire with non-believers?

For money.

Money to build more bombs

and buy more guns and spread the truth

to our brothers and sisters throughout the world...

so that the world would be convinced that we put a sword

through the heart of the British government.

You failed to detonate your own PBIED on the 1st of October rail attack.

You couldn't go through with it.

But look how I have atoned.

I have helped the cause a thousand times more.

[presenter] We're being told a statement by the Prime Minister is imminent.

Meanwhile, all day, ministers have been giving their reaction

to this morning's news

that the Prime Minister canceled today's engagements.

[man] Home Secretary, any reaction on the breaking news?

Really, please, we should avoid speculation until the Prime Minister's had

the opportunity to address the allegations himself.

-[knocking] -Yeah. Come in.

[presenter] Today's event follow unconfirmed reports

of a leak of compromising material relating to the Prime Minister's past.

[woman] Is the Prime Minister going to resign?

I'm just getting on with the job of protecting our country.

Thank you.

-[journalists shout out] -Home Secretary!

It's also being reported the leak implicates

the Director-General of the Security Service, Stephen Hunter-Dunn. The--

The Prime Minister will resign before the day is out.

Hunter-Dunn, the same.

Mike Travis, he stays on to make sure RIPA-18 gets kicked into the long grass.

Leaking the kompromat... whose decision was that?

I couldn't possibly say.

Thanks to you, David, the CPS have charged Nadia Ali, Luke Aikens

and Lorraine Craddock in the conspiracy to murder Julia Montague.

Some say you should get a medal.

Others reckon you should be kicked off the force.

We'll see.

There'll need to be a thorough investigation into your conduct.

But first, David, there's something you need more than all of that.

[woman] Come in.

-[David] Hello. -Hello.

I'm David.

And I, uh...

I need some help.

[sighs]

[knocking]

Hi.

Hey.

Uh, come in.

-How are you doing? -I'm good.

How are you?

[sighs]

I'm getting there.

Well, you've... taken the first step.

I'm really proud of you.

The kids are looking forward to sleeping in their own beds again.

-I bet. -[chuckles]

I was thinking...

it's actually my turn for them again but only if it's okay with you.

Yeah, um...

Kids, your dad's here!

[Ella] Dad!

-No train journeys this time. -Mm.

-Dad. -Hello, princess.

Ah!

Ah! There's a monster on my back! Get him off! Get him off!

[Vicky] Okay, you behave. You have fun.

Do you, uh...

What?

Nothing.

'Cause, um...

there's room for one more.

Yeah?

Yeah.

Okay.

I'll get my bag.

[chuckles]

-Mummy's going to come too. -[kids] Yeah!

[door closes]

[giggles] Oh! He's off!

Okay.

[happy chatter]

[David] Let's go.
