Previously on Heartland. I do believe you and Mason have a future. I can see
it. Ash, I am all in on you. I just wanted us to have a fresh start. Must
have pissed you off. Ryan and I got back together, huh? I shouldn't have assumed
that he was after your money.
Maxie! I feel like I haven't seen you in forever.
Jack's been keeping me pretty busy at the ranch.
I've been thinking we should set some ground rules.
If either of us needs help, we ask for it.
And don't make promises you can't keep.
Wheels turn on a gravel road. A person sits on a cart and is pulled by a brown
horse. Two reins steer.
There you go!
Yes!
The horse continues.
Let's push.
Come on, bud.
The horse is in the distance.
Horse is looking good.
So is your new boyfriend, sister.
Okay, don't jinx them.
Keep it going, Helix.
Keep it going, buddy.
This is the part of the track where it keeps falling apart.
That's it, boy.
Let's go!
Let's go!
Hey! No!
No! Helix, no!
Come on!
Come on, Helix! Now! Get up! Straighten up now!
Come on!
I don't get it. Helix comes from championship bloodlines.
Okay, I paid a hefty price for that.
Well, maybe it's the track that makes him nervous.
Well, can you fix whatever's going on before the race here on the weekend?
This is a really cool spot, and I see why you want to kick the season off
here. Yeah, plus I took out a huge loan, and we really need the prize money.
Amy nods. Okay, I will see what I can do. Thank you.
While Amy gets to the bottom of this, you and I are going to catch up.
Yes, and you can get to know Kiefer.
Kiefer motions irritably at Helix.
Okay, now drop your rein.
Dex holds up his hand.
Good!
Good. Get him into a trot now.
That's it.
That's it.
Yup. Yup.
That a boy.
Good for you.
You're starting to get it.
Great. Too bad I can't ride a tame horse out to shoot at the rodeo. This keeps
you centered using your legs, hips, and core.
It'll give you a fighting chance once you're sitting on 2,000 pounds of bull.
When will I finally get to do that?
Well, I don't want to jump the gun, but you might be ready for the next step.
About time. Yeah.
How is it?
It's good. It's fine.
Oh, babe, spicy.
What's in this?
A little wasabi horseradish, some pepper flakes, and the base is this. Too much
heat. You're going to melt people's faces off. Okay.
I'm going to hit the reset on this barbecue sauce.
Sure. I'll go clean the barbecue.
Peter steps out. Amy tries the sauce.
It's not that hot.
When you're feeding a group as big as we are, you err on the side of too mild
rather than too spicy.
Is everything okay with you guys?
Yeah, why?
Well, you've just been a little testy since he's been back.
I don't know. We're fine, but I'm late.
For what?
Like, late.
Late, like really late. Like you think you're... Don't say it. I haven't even
told Peter yet.
Why not?
Because I don't want to freak him out too. I mean, this would be a serious
curveball for us.
Have you taken a test?
Not yet.
I mean, I just... Can you imagine if I'm actually... I can't even wrap my head
around it.
I have to go, but I don't think this conversation is over.
Right.
Amy grabs her jacket and white cowboy hat and leaves.
Lou takes another try of the sauce.
Later, Amy rides up to the dude ranch.
Caleb?
Amy? Hey!
Hi!
Welcome back.
Yeah, sorry about the short notice.
That's okay.
I'm glad that Lou just had an extra cabin for you. Yeah.
So, you doing like a supply run to Hudson?
Personal business, actually. I've been paying to keep my trailer at a buddy's
lot for years now.
I'm gonna gut it, clear it out, and send it to the junkyard. Aw, that's kind of
sad. Yeah, but it's time.
Yeah, well, we planned a big barbecue for tonight.
Aw, you shouldn't have.
It's not for you. It's for Lisa's sister, who's actually your cabin
neighbor right there.
I'm a welcome addition, though, right? Of course you are.
We all miss you.
Yeah, I miss you guys, too. A lot.
Caleb leans on the fence.
So I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit concerned when I heard that Nathan
had pushed on from Hudson.
How's that going?
Oh, no, it's going really, really good.
Yeah, he's even, he's coming here next weekend for a few days in between his
competitions. Good.
Long distance, it can be tricky.
Ash and I, we've been doing it for over a year now, though. So round two's going
well? A few bumps in the road, but that's normal.
Amy nods.
Okay, so the reason I'm back here dealing with the trailer right now, Ash,
this whole engagement ring is in there.
No. You're not. Yes, I am. I'm proposing.
Again. I'm so excited for you.
They hug.
Amy has an uncertain smile.
Opening credits.
A CBC original.
A bright orange sun rises over the horizon.
Amber Marshall.
Someone rubs a horse's back.
Michelle Morgan.
Horses run in a pack.
Amy saddles a horse.
Low fog covers the land. And Sean Johnston is Jack.
A Herd of Horses Runs Up a Hill, produced by Jess Muldainer. Amy stands
beside her horse.
Co-executive producer, Dean Bennett.
Executive producer, Mark Haroon.
Lou smiles.
Amy holds Lindy.
Executive producer, Jordy Randall. Executive producer, Tom Cox.
Two horses nuzzle each other.
Executive producer, Michael Weinberg.
Heartland.
Jack said I'm ready for the next step in my training.
Oh yeah? And what's that?
He'll find out tomorrow.
What are you training for?
Bulls. Whoa.
Thought I made my living in the hot seat.
So you're Tammy's new driver.
Slash boyfriend.
Which came first?
Well, she gave me the job and then stole my heart. Aw.
Well, he's more than just a pretty face. Thank you. He was the one who found
Helix and convinced me to buy him. Big swing for us, huh?
We'll get him there, babe. Aw.
So you got any plans for Nathan's homecoming? I just want to spend some
time with him in person.
I miss having him next door.
Yeah, and like the new homeowner win, the cowgirl influencer.
Who? Yeah, no, don't go there.
So I couldn't help but notice a new deck of the dude ranch you guys renovating?
Yeah, we're putting in a sauna, a couple cold plunge tubs.
Full Nordic spa for you. It's nice to have a new challenge.
I'm sure it'll go better than your stab at horse breeding, Lou.
What's that?
Turns out it wasn't for me.
Well, you gave it a good shot.
Facilitating the breeding process is not for everyone. Well, it's too bad the
safety equipment didn't come with a blindfold.
You don't need to go into detail. All right. Thank you, Jack. Can we eat?
Yes, we can.
The sun shines over the valleys of trees.
The mountains sit in the distance.
Meanwhile, Amy works with Helix and a pen. Jack arrives.
Well, how's it going?
Good. He's got a nice even gait, no heat in his legs.
Nothing physical, that's good.
Yeah, I want to try him with the hopples, see how he does with those.
All right, next step.
I'm ready, Jack.
Okay.
Jack opens a trailer door. A steer trots out.
Get out of there.
A steer?
Bucking steer.
I bought him from a stock contractor Tim knows.
And unlike the real deal, it comes with a guarantee not to kill you.
All right, let's do this.
Okay, well, I gotta get a coffee if I'm gonna match that energy.
Set those panels up and I'll be back.
Yes, sir.
Dex grins excitedly. Meanwhile, Amy continues with Helix.
Come on.
Come on.
Tammy and Kiefer arrive.
Hey, come on.
Not looking too good, huh?
I don't think he likes the hobbles. He lunged fine without them.
Well, that's like saying a barrel racer is having trouble with the barrels.
Well... I don't know. Maybe it's the material he doesn't like or the length.
I was going to try adjusting them. Okay. And then we'll try them again back on
the track.
Amy's just getting started.
Yeah, well, we're only a couple days from running Heaven's Half Mile.
Yeah, I know. I'm the one getting the loan payment alerts.
But the only way he'll race is if we give her a chance to do her thing. Thank
you.
Fine.
You can show me around Hudson.
I would love to.
I'm just going to check and look at you as a person. No, no, no. Come on. Let's
just go. We can see her when we get back. Okay, okay. I guess.
Thank you.
Oh, hey, you.
I thought you were my sister.
Why don't she be flattered to hear that?
She's coming in to have morning tea with me.
Well, you're gonna have to wait a while. She just went into town with Kiefer.
She did?
What?
All right, well, pour me a cup of coffee, then.
Boy, she's smitten.
Say, what's your take on that guy?
I just met him.
Nice enough.
Somewhat charming, I guess.
Do I detect a butt?
Well, you know, age gap.
Yeah, well, you and I have that, too.
Right. But he just seems to have a lot of influence over her.
Like buying that horse.
Yes, an expensive one.
A horse of that caliber certainly could help a driver shine.
Yeah.
Yeah. I just hope he's not taking advantage of her.
And I was wrong all those years ago about Ryan. But this is the first guy
that she's dated since Ryan passed, and I want to be supportive.
But I'm also looking out for my little sister, right?
Lisa nods to herself.
Lou struggles with a sauna.
Easy. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Just... You can't jam it in like that. You got to... Well... No, you're going
to ruin the cedar. I know, but they don't fit, so maybe we need to re-sand
it. They do fit. They're just notched out. You just got to use a little more
finesse, see?
Thanks for the mansplanation.
Sorry,
am I doing something wrong here? No.
It's just this is a little more involved than I thought it would be.
Part of the challenge, right?
Huh? You think we can handle this?
I think you and I.
I can handle anything.
All right. All right? I use a little more finesse.
Okay, good.
He takes a deep breath as Peter walks away.
Elsewhere, Dex is saddled on the steer. He tightens his gloved hand.
He wears a black hockey helmet with a cage. He places his hand on the gate.
Sit deep. Your hip's underneath you.
Okay. Don't be gazing around. Tuck your chin.
Right. Your free hand is your balance.
Dex smiles with his black mouth guard showing.
Jack's face is serious.
Dex nods to Jack, who nods back and throws the gate open.
Jack pulls the gate with force. The steer comes out, gently trotting along.
Dex has one hand up.
Uh, Jack?
Jack watches the steer trot along.
He isn't barking.
Give him a nudge.
I am!
Dex looks down at the steer with disbelief. The steer ends up completely
still, only his ear twitching. Dex brings his balancing hand to his side.
Dex shrugs.
It appears we've been fleeced.
Dex drops his shoulders.
It just felt like I lost touch with Montana in the middle of the fence work
and then it all unraveled from there.
You guys were so in sync though. Did something change in your routine?
Well, the travel schedule is pretty intense.
The horse trots. I spent more time on the road than in training.
Well, that'll do it.
Yeah. Nathan hesitates.
I, uh... I hate to spring this on you, but I think I have to go straight to the
next stop in Wyoming.
Wait, so... Wait, you're not coming home?
I'm sorry.
I just, I think that Montana and I could use the practice.
And I can get him... Yeah.
Yeah, no, that makes sense.
He leans on the fence.
I miss you, too.
Of course.
Drive safe.
Love you.
Love you, too.
Nathan hangs up his phone. Amy does the same on the other end.
Wow.
Sorry. Glad you could make it for morning tea.
Hope there's something stronger than Earl Grey in those mugs. Oh, I know you
love a hot toddy nightcap.
I'm so sorry.
I'm really sorry. The day just got away from me. Oh, young.
I really wanted to take Kiefer shopping to get his mind off Helix, so I upgraded
all of his driving gear from boots to goggles.
You're a very generous girlfriend.
Yeah, I am. But he buys me stuff all the time, too.
That's nice.
You bought him a horse.
No, no. Helix is our horse.
Okay, but you borrowed the money to buy it at his suggestion, right?
Yeah. What are you suggesting, though, Lisa? Nothing.
I'm looking out for you. You haven't known each other that long.
How well do you know the guy?
Well enough to know that he's not using me.
That he's actually in love with me? Is that so hard to believe?
That's not what I meant.
You know what, Lisa?
Subtlety has never been your strong suit. Okay, Tammy, I'm just... After all
the trouble you caused, I cannot believe you're doubting another man in my life.
Oh, why can't you just be happy for me for once?
Tammy stands, much to Lisa's disbelief.
She places her tea down and walks off the porch.
Lisa puts her tea down and stays seated, taking it in.
Later, Amy and Lou are in the kitchen.
Yes, I'm still late. No, I don't want to talk about it. Well, you can't just bury
your face in a muffin.
Watch me.
Good morning.
Hi. How's everything?
I'm just getting badgered by my sister. Okay, that's not true.
Funny. That's what Tammy accused me of last night, and she was right.
I was sticking my nose where it didn't belong, and I'm going to fix it right
now.
Good luck.
Thank you. Jamie, I need you.
Hi. Hi, honey.
Come on in.
I went through every storage bin, scoured every corner of the trailer. I
can't find the ring. I'm sorry.
I feel like I'm losing my mind, and I know it's there somewhere, and I could
really use your help.
Caleb, I can't. I have to work with Tammy's horse.
Please. I really need the second set of eyes.
Okay, but we need to be quick.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Amy smiles at Caleb.
Later, Lisa pulls up in front of the cabin where Tammy sits alone on the
front porch. She seems down as Lisa gets out.
Don't worry, we're leaving this afternoon. I've already booked a motel
room.
Don't be ridiculous, Tammy.
Lisa walks closer.
Tammy's arms are folded.
I'm here to apologize.
Oh, excuse me while I pick up my jaw.
I was wrong.
I don't know Kiefer, and I should not have jumped to conclusions.
Yeah, more like a massive leap.
I'm apologizing.
I'm happy that you're happy. I am.
And nobody believes in second chances at love more than me.
Lisa looks at Tammy.
So please don't go anywhere.
Tammy takes a breath.
Oh, come on, Tammy. I'm sorry.
Oh, just let me bask in that for a moment.
What about me? Do I get an apology?
For what?
I have hardly seen you.
Oh, okay.
Tammy shrugs a bit uncomfortably.
How about a sister's lunch?
Okay. Now you're talking.
And since you're so concerned about my finances, you're buying.
I'm happy to.
Let's go.
Tammy smiles, shakes her head.
Alright, let's go.
Hey, mine in the middle.
Alright?
Keep your toes out.
Relax.
Remember, lock the door.
Hey, Chet.
I brought back that dud steer you sold me.
Exactly what you asked for. Beginner speed.
Beginner speed. He stays in park.
Chet slaps the man beside him in the chest and points.
Is this the aspiring rider you're talking about?
Chet smiles.
Kind of old to start riding.
His age isn't your concern.
I want a steer that actually bucks.
Well, he's too big for a steer.
He's a practice bull.
All right, well, I'm happy to do an exchange, but I don't want to disappoint
you again. You up for a test drive, kid?
Let's do it.
All right, load him up. Okay, Junior.
That one, third pen.
It's just up here. Caleb.
Come on, hurry.
Yes.
Oh, wow.
It's like seeing an old friend.
Yes, it is.
I have to say, I'm being hit by a flood of memories.
Yeah, it was the same thing for me.
Well, it's just Ty and I had so many good moments here.
Us too, and more than a few dust-ups. This place was quite the rollercoaster.
Yeah, and here you are getting on for another ride, huh?
Caleb puts his hat on while Amy pulls out a box.
I must be crazy. Yeah, you are, but that's not what I meant.
You know what? You and Ashley are different people now.
Yeah, I just...
Can't help but wonder if Caleb 2.0 still isn't going to be good enough. Why would
you say that?
Ash would like it if I got a real job.
Caleb, you're a pilot.
No, I mean, she says I could make a lot more money flying commercial.
Oh. Well, I can't really picture you wearing one of those, like, polyester
uniforms.
Me neither.
Plus, um, I'd have to be based in Vancouver, where Ashley and her kids
live. But not Carson.
Exactly. he's been really struggling in school lately he needs me around yeah
that sounds complicated it is but it's all good we're gonna figure it out now
let's find that ring okay i don't know where to start meanwhile peter
finishes the sauna so why is the latch on the outside there's a string that
goes in so you can open and close it from the inside and it's the best way to
keep the heat in well is this thing actually working
Only one way to find out.
He gestures in.
Peter follows Lou into the sauna. The door closes behind them.
They sit inside.
All right.
See, a little bit of hard work and perseverance wins the day.
You get that from one of your motivational podcasts?
Would you just relax and be in the moment? Okay, let's be in the moment
outside. It is really hot in here.
All right.
The string breaks.
What? Oh, wait, what? What?
Oh, that's weird.
Let me see.
The door is latched.
Maybe the humidity snapped it? Are we stuck in here?
Just let me think about it.
I'm already sweating.
What if I stuck a credit card through the door?
Can you just hurry?
Just hold on. Just let me... Oh, I know. Maybe...
I'm overheating. This can't be safe.
Lou, you're fine. People stay in these things for like an hour. Not if you're
pregnant.
Peter turns to Lou, confused.
Pregnant?
Lou nods.
Peter bursts through the door.
Great. Now we have to fix the door.
The door?
Who cares about the door? Lou, you're pregnant?
Maybe.
All right, Dex. You know what to do. Ready?
Dex falls off the bull. Those watching laugh.
Jack nods.
Hey, that's more like it.
I'm happy to make the trade, but it looks like too much bull for your rider.
He's just learning.
Got a ton of potential, though. He's a natural athlete.
Yeah, well, it doesn't always translate.
Especially when you grow up doing this.
Okay. Again, I don't need your opinion. I need an animal that bucks. This one
will do.
Dex rubs his hair. Meanwhile, Amy trains Helix.
Come on.
Good boy.
That's it.
Kiefer approaches.
Settle down. It's okay.
Hey, hey, settle.
Please. You're okay.
You're okay.
Hey,
hey, settle down.
Settle down.
Kiefer hops in.
What's going on?
I don't know.
Oh, he could have gone down.
I just, no matter how I adjust the hopples, he has issues.
Well, he needs them to race.
Not if he races free-legged.
Come on, now.
He had great balance and coordination when I lunged him without them. Oh, no.
These horses need hopples to control the gait.
It's standard bred 101.
I would never drive a horse that way.
Hey, how's our boy doing?
Oh, he's being a brat.
And this one wants to let him get away with it.
He just doesn't like the hopples.
And now she wants to throw a Hail Mary and have him run free-legged. It's not a
Hail Mary just because you haven't done it. I do think it's a viable option.
Yeah, and I don't see the harm in trying.
Oh, come on, Tammy. You know better than that.
You can't trust a standard bread of speed without hopples.
It'll break form and get lost in the traffic, especially on a smaller track
like Heaven's Half Mile.
But, hey, what do I know, though, right? I'm just a driver. Hey, dial it down,
babe. Come on.
I actually drove a free-legged horse for years. Yeah, that was a long time ago.
Wasn't that the horse you were driving when you won Driver of the Year? Yeah.
You won the O'Brien Award? She did.
Back when she was about your age.
Listen, we brought him here for Amy's expertise. I say we give it a shot.
Amy pats Helix.
Later, Helix trots along the track.
Amy is suited up in the car behind him. She adjusts her goggles.
They trot along.
All right, Helix.
Let's do this.
I still don't like this.
I think it's a big gamble.
No, when it comes to horses, Amy doesn't gamble, and her gut is usually right.
Well, it better be, because we can't make any money off of Helix if she can't
get him to the races.
Good boy, Helix.
Good boy.
Oh, I think he's actually pacing himself.
He doesn't look forced or rushed. No, and he's controlling his speed
perfectly. I have to admit, there's no hesitation so far.
Good boy.
There you go.
See how they do on the home stretch.
He's not pulling back. He's going for it. Looks like a different horse.
Look at that three-legged beauty!
Oh, we are going to be in the money soon, babe.
Yes, we are.
Peter fixes the latch of the sauna.
Lou eyes him as she approaches. She puts down some tools.
I knew I shouldn't have told you. I can see your wheels spinning.
Lou sits.
Yeah, well.
Peter shrugs.
It's kind of a big deal. I know. That's why I didn't see the point in both of us
obsessing. Just when I thought we were moving on to the next chapter of
parenting, we could be right back to diapers.
Deething, sleepless nights.
Oh, I remember all of it.
Not to mention another round of post-secondary costs when most people
have retired.
You really haven't taken a test yet?
I know it sounds irrational, but somehow having a definitive answer is...
Scary.
How would this even work, Peter?
We don't even live in the same place.
He looks around.
He looks at Lou.
Later, Amy brushes Helix.
Well, looks like she was right, boy.
Mea culpa.
No, it's not necessary. Nah, nah, nah, nah. Listen, I'm big enough to admit
when I was wrong.
Sorry I got so fired up about it.
Truth.
Uh, truth.
I guess I may have got a little bit fired up, too.
Yeah, yeah, you did.
Got a little heated there for me.
So this is, uh, how you spend your evenings?
Rushing horses?
Think you need a boyfriend?
I have a boyfriend.
Oh.
Where's he at?
He's on the working cow horse circuit.
So, he left you to go on the road?
That's just short-term.
Still.
Doesn't seem fair.
Must get lonely.
What are you doing?
Oh, oh, hey.
How much have you had to drink?
Look, I don't know what you think just happened here, okay, but the idea of
the... coming on to you because our hands brushed across each other. I mean,
that's just, it just sounds crazy.
Amy avoids eye contact.
Kiefer looks around and nods. I'd keep it to yourself.
Yeah. He nods slightly and eyes Amy before looking around and walking away.
He takes another sip of beer.
Amy stands uneasily. She glances at Helix. The sun sets over the ranch.
The next day the sun shines brightly over the green valleys.
A family of geese floats along.
Amy walks the driveway by herself.
Amy smiles as a truck approaches.
The truck does a quick stop.
Caleb hangs out the driver's side window with a gleeful look on his face.
I remember where it is.
Bolted awake and it came to me. I taped a ring to the inside of the electrical
panel. Oh, that's actually a pretty good hiding place.
Thank you.
Just wish I'd remembered that before I took the trailer to the junkyard.
Thanks for coming with me. Yeah, my pleasure.
Actually, I really needed the distraction.
Tammy's boyfriend, he tried to pull a move on me last night.
Seriously? He shakes his head.
What a dirtbag.
Do you need me to set him straight?
No, I'm okay.
Just... I need to tell her, and I'm kind of dreading it.
I was up half the night talking to Nathan on the phone about it.
You told Nathan?
Why wouldn't I?
Well, it's just, it's a million miles away and there's nothing he can do about
it. That would drive me crazy.
Yeah, no, I did think about that too, but not telling him would be so much
worse. We agreed to be 100% honest with each other.
That's great, in theory, but... No, no buts.
He was really supportive and he gave me some really great advice.
Caleb considers this as he glances at Amy. He nods and looks back at the road,
contemplating. You ready?
Dex nods. Jack releases the gate.
Dex lands hard. The bull goes at him.
You have to react faster if you're gonna stay with him.
When you're leaning too far back again, concentrate on staying centered.
Jack opens the gate while watching the bull. He raises his arm.
The bull trots in.
Get out of here.
I think that's it for me today, Jack.
What, are you hurt?
No, I'm sore. I've been thrown in the dirt like ten times.
It's not like you to end a session early.
It's about yesterday.
Those rodeo kids hurt your feelings.
Oh, boo-hoo, you'll show them. Will I?
Or is Chet right? I was on skates by the time I could walk. When did you start
riding, Bronx?
Doesn't matter.
It's about getting the bad rides out of your system.
I used to ride this old bronc my dad had until the sun went down.
I opened the gate myself day in and day out. I won't fill you full of BS.
You have some catching up to do. So I just keep getting tossed?
Yeah. And you keep getting right back on him again. That's the important thing.
Jack gives Dex a serious look. Dex turns and tosses his helmet into the dirt with
frustration. Meanwhile, Amy and Caleb are at the junkyard.
You okay?
Yeah.
It's just the way you were talking about being so honest with Nathan kind of got
me wondering if I'm being as honest as I should be.
With Ashley?
Yeah. And myself.
It's true. We're not the people we used to be, but now we have a whole new set
of issues.
Plus, we both have young kids that need us.
Yeah. That's tough to balance.
Especially living in two different places.
Well, Lou and Peter do it.
Ash and I are not really Peter.
Maybe this whole grand gesture thing is just my way of not seeing the writing on
the wall.
Like doubling down on forcing it to work?
How?
What I really need is a definitive sign so I know what to do.
Wait,
isn't that... Whoa, whoa, hey, please stop!
The trailer gets crushed further.
Yes, that's my sign.
Amy watches disappointedly as the trailer continues to be crushed.
Caleb nods to himself.
He takes off his hat. Amy puts her arm around him.
It's okay.
I think you two have a real good shot of placing in the money tonight.
Placing?
I'm driving a win.
That's the spirit, babe.
I believe in both of you.
Tammy turns to Lisa.
Oh, hey, do you have any peppermints?
Yeah, in the barn, I think. Awesome. I have this tradition of giving him a
little treat before every race.
Maybe see if you can grab one for the horse, too.
Uh-huh.
Tammy runs off.
Lisa taps the fence.
Hey. Hey, bud.
Tammy runs into the barn.
Amy follows.
Hey, Tammy.
Hey.
Hi, uh, Amy, thank you so much. I... You're the reason why Helix even gets to
race tonight. Oh, yeah, no, of course. It's my pleasure. He's a really great
horse. Yeah, I know.
Um, I just... There's something that I need to talk to you about.
Oh, okay.
Amy looks at Tammy seriously.
You're unbelievable.
Kiefer turns.
Amy told me what you did.
It was a misunderstanding.
You know, it sounded pretty clear to me.
And you believe her over me?
Yeah, I do.
What reason would she have to lie?
Then just let me explain.
Save it, Kiefer.
Okay, we're done.
Just like that?
Just like that.
He looks away.
Okay, so what about the race?
What about our horse?
He's fired.
And that is my horse!
No,
look, you said that we would take this... It doesn't matter what she said.
It matters what the paperwork says. The owner is the person who bought the
horse, pays for the boarding, the farrier, the vets.
Lisa's eyes narrow.
Do I need to go on?
Kiefer looks up at Tammy with annoyance. As he walks past her, she doesn't look
at him. She tears up.
What happened, honey?
Honey, what happened?
Come here.
Dex struggles down the stairs from the loft.
Hey.
How's it going with that bull?
Great.
He's got me on a strict diet of dirt and humiliation.
Rough start, huh?
Oh, yeah.
Well, I'm sure it'll go better today.
Nah.
I'm taking a day off.
Well, but this is all you've talked about for months.
Actually riding the bull.
I just feel like it's too late in the game for me.
I catch up to some of these other riders.
I get how that feels.
I felt so out of my element when I first joined the flag team.
Seemed impossible I'd ever fit in.
But now River's my best friend, and I feel like I'm getting better and better
with every performance.
I know what it's like to feel like you have something to prove.
But the only person you have to prove anything to is yourself.
Okay,
Grandpa Jack.
Yes, please.
I... I... You were right.
He was just using me for Helix.
He tried to warn me.
They sit.
Well, this is not an I-told-you-so moment.
Like such an idiot.
Lisa rubs her hair. Now I don't have a driver, and I'm gonna be late for
another loan payment.
Another? Yeah.
And no one else can sub in tonight?
It's close to the race.
Well, maybe you don't have to look that far.
Would you drive him, Amy?
No, I was thinking of someone with a whole lot more experience.
Like you.
No.
No, I haven't driven in years. Not in an actual race.
Well, has been.
That is not true.
Not as a driver or in any other way, Tam.
You're the most spirited person I've ever known.
Really? Without question.
And you know what? It's time for you to get back in the driver's seat.
Tammy considers.
Meanwhile, Peter and Lou set up the sauna and cold plunge deck. She puts
down a stool.
All right.
Peter puts a lid on a plunge tank.
Bowl, spa, kit, and caboodle. Done.
I have to admit, it looks exactly like I dreamed it would.
Right?
We're a good team when we put our minds together, right?
Yeah.
They look at one another.
Listen, if this is happening, there's no way I'm going to put it all on you.
Right? We'll make some changes.
Really? Yeah.
We're in this together.
Well, it would be nice to spend more time together, be together more.
Maybe there's a silver lining to this after all.
I mean, neither of us are as youthful or full of energy as we once were, but...
Speak for yourself.
But think of the life experience we have, right?
Yeah. Parenting experience.
Time in the trenches, Lou. Are you comparing parenting to war now?
There is some emotional shrapnel involved, not gonna lie.
Can't argue with that.
Lou sits on Peter.
Even though it is a little scary, it is kind of exciting too, though, right?
Yeah. Lou turns to look into Peter's eyes. They kiss.
I'll take the test.
Okay, thank you.
Tammy is suited up.
Hey, how's he doing? He's good. Okay, you ready, boy?
Kiefer approaches.
What are you doing here?
I'm subbing for Stapleton.
Are you really going to go? What does it look like?
Come on, Tammy. This is crazy.
You're going to hurt yourself on the horse. Why don't you worry about your
own race, Kiefer, and how your ex is about to hand it to you?
Kiefer shrugs Tammy off smugly and walks away, shaking his head.
Tammy holds a firm gaze.
Later, another horse and driver ride along the track, spectators watching
from the sidelines in chairs and on benches.
The announcer holds his microphone.
Here they come around the band not a lot separating these four teams just yet But
Poindexter is holding strong in the lead, followed by Timber. Steam Whistle
and Helix fighting hard to stay in the race.
Their speed looks good.
So does Helix's gait. Good start.
This is where Kiefer claimed it would fall apart for a free-legged horse.
Quite a battle going on between Steam Whistle and Helix from the back. Look
out for a push from these new drivers as they jockey from position.
And there goes Steam Whistle overtaking Timber. It doesn't look like Helix wants
to be left out of the action either. He's the one running free-legged out
there and making a push.
No, he's not breaking stride at all. And here comes Helix and Tammy Stillman
pulling out wide to get into third place position.
Look at this.
Helix is now closing in on Team Whistle for second place.
Oh, my gosh. Go, Tammy. Go, go, go.
Tammy Stillman is making the move with Helix. Right pass, keeper, Lahey, and
Team Whistle into second place.
Yeah.
Here they come down the back stretch. This one's going to be closed right to
the finish.
Come on, Tammy. Let's go, Helix.
Let's go, Helix! Come on! Poindexter looking strong in the lead, but Helix is
closing back.
What a race we have!
And here they come to the taste with your winner, Poindexter! She moves!
She moves!
Yes! You did that!
Good girl!
Oh, hey.
Turns out Helix just had to lose his hopples and his driver.
Keeper shakes the reins to leave.
Tammy waves.
Peter looks out the window.
Lou comes out of the washroom.
It takes a minute.
Okay. She puts down the test.
Wow, I can't believe how nervous I am right now. I know, me too.
Two very different realities for us.
But you were right.
Whatever happens, we're in this together.
Right? Yeah, of course.
Yeah.
They release hands.
Lou sits down, hand to her head. Okay.
Moment of truth.
You ready?
Yeah. They lean in to look at the test more closely.
Is that okay?
Yeah. Does that mean what I think it means?
Yeah. One line means not pregnant.
You sure?
Mm-hmm. Yeah, see?
Okay.
What a relief.
He hugs Lou.
Wow.
As they hug, Lou's eyes flutter for a moment. Meanwhile, Jack pours champagne.
Oh, my gosh.
Hi, Jack.
Hi. Hello.
Oh, honey, you should have seen them. They were so amazing together.
Can't believe we almost won.
More importantly, she beat Kiefer.
Yes.
And I can make my loan payment. Well, congratulations, Tammy. It sounds like a
real special day.
Thank you, honey. I've got a couple things I need to finish up, so I'm just
going to let you two girls celebrate. Thanks, Jack.
Thank you.
Wow. I have to admit, it felt pretty darn good to be out there again, and
almost as good as having my sister cheering me on, reminding me of what I'm
still capable of.
Proud of you.
They sip their champagne.
You ready?
Jack watches Katie open the gate for Dex.
He falls.
You crunched it!
Oh, that was awesome!
Dex walks over to Katie.
Not bad.
Let's go again.
Bring him back.
Jack smiles to himself as Dex runs to get the bowl. They haven't noticed Jack
watching. He opens another gate and walks through.
At the dude ranch, Amy walks up behind Caleb, who's standing on the dock,
gazing out at the water. He turns when he hears her approach.
Hey.
You on?
Headed to Vancouver.
Amy nods. I get the sense that it's not to propose.
No, it's not.
He turns to Amy.
Sorry, Caleb.
No, it's good.
You inspired me to have a very honest conversation.
and just put everything out on the table.
Good luck.
Thanks.
I'll let you get that.
Bye, Amy. Drive safe.
Hey,
cowboy. Hey, cowgirl. How was your day?
I was, um, it was crazy.
Um, how did you go first?
Well, the training session was better.
Oh? Are you back at the motel?
No, coffee shop next town over. Better reception.
I'd have to settle for an old school phone call back there.
So you drove a town over instead?
Hey, what's a couple hours to see your face?
And if this is the only way I get to see a sunset with you, then I'll take it.
Okay, so, what happened with Tammy?
Oh, yeah, okay.
So I told her, and then she dumped him and then took him down on the track.
What? Like driving?
Yeah, they were neck and neck right until the end. Did she whack him with
her riding crop?
No. Jamming in his spokes then?
No, you're terrible.
Nathan sips his coffee. Amy sits on the dock.
