- Wow.

We're not in Kansas anymore, Taz?

- (Taz) I know, it's beautiful.

Oh.

- Taz, can you get my bags? - Yeah.

You get the camera then?

- Okay. Cheers.

Wow. - (Taz) I'm nervous actually.

- You nervous, really? - A little bit.

- (Carl) Well Taz don't forget, they know, they've met us on the film.

- You never know what to expect

with these things.

- (Carl) I know.

(doorbell rings)

(Carl) Hello! - Hi.

- Hi. - Come in. Hi.

- Carl. - Yes.

- Nice to meet you in person. - Oh, nice to meet you.

- Daniel, I'm Daniel. - You're Daniel

and you're Arthur. - That's right.

- (Carl) Obviously, I didn't know who was who.

- How was your flight?

- (Carl) Oh, I've got a little bit of a stomach bug.

The flight was lovely.

The staff were amazing,

but the stomach is playing out.

- Hi, nice to meet you. - Hi, Daniel.

Nice to meet you, too.

Wow. I'm in awe.

I saw "Paranormal Farm," one, two and three,

and I can't believe you guys are here, you know?

This is so cool. - Yeah.

- You know, I've been trying to convince Art

that there's something, you know, sinister in this house

and I just want some help with it.

- I'm still to be convinced.

- (Carl) Right.

I guess seeing is believing.

That's why we're here to get some evidence.

- Yeah, well, speaking of seeing,

do you have a professional camera you're gonna use or...

- (Carl) Well, actually we have, and this is it.

It's a smartphone.

So right now, everyone's shooting in 4K on the smartphones.

- Oh. - And I think

for the purpose of what we're here for,

to capture some evidence, I think this will suffice.

- Okay.

- (Carl) So you're gonna get the best quality

on this smartphone.

They don't call it smartphone for nothing.

- Phones are amazing now days. (people chattering)

- Well, welcome. Come on in.

- Oh, thanks. - Thank you.

- This is Art's room. - Oh, wow.

- You can go here. - We have a patio.

- Beautiful. - We have separate rooms,

but this is his room, the master suite.

- (Carl) Nice.

I love the view of your lake.

- (Daniel) Yeah, that's Hollywood Lake.

A lot of history there.

- (Taz) And that's the Hollywood sign. Wow.

- And that's the 101 freeway.

- (Carl) I have a feeling with the lake

there's some stories here.

There's something connecting this house to the water.

- Mm-hmm.

- (Carl) So you live in the basement?

- Pretty much.

So this room is the dark room

where one of you could sleep.

- Oh, wow. - Yeah.

I felt- - Oh, wow.

- Stuff here and others have told me

they felt stuff down here, so, but.

- Yeah, there is definitely an energy here as well.

Yeah, definitely there's,

yeah, there's some stories to be towed here.

- (Arthur) A lot of action has taken in this room.

- Next to this wall is our,

not basement, but a crawl space.

- Okay. - It goes under the house

and it's all filled with dirt and debris

but you're able to go in there.

You go in through here

and it takes you underneath the house.

You feel the draught? The wind?

- Well, yes. - You feel it?

- Should I take the camera?

(air whirring)

Wow.

And again, I'm getting a strong energy here.

Is this the only way in and out?

- This is the way in and out.

We would need a ladder to get up there.

You know, there was one night

where I was asleep in bed

and I couldn't move for like a few minutes.

And I remember I was just so scared and frightened

and I was going through a lot

of different emotions in my mind, you know?

I was also mad

and I just didn't know what to do

and it was really, really scary for me.

And, you know, sometimes I feel like there's someone

or something here with me and I just don't know what it is

or where it's coming from

and I just, that's why I reached out to you.

- It's a very common phenomena called sleep paralysis.

Have you read up on sleep paralysis?

- I've heard of it, yes. Yeah.

- Okay. Well, just so you know, you're not alone.

I also suffer from sleep paralysis

and I know it's terrifying.

And what you described is a cluster of emotions

that people often fear and feel in that fearful state.

- Yeah. - And why would you call me

when there's paranormal investigators here in LA?

- Well, you know,

after watching your three documentaries of Paranormal Farm,

you know, I felt that I could relate with you

because, you know, I'm openly gay, you're openly gay

and you know, my whole life I've always felt judged

and I feel that you wouldn't judge me

and judge me and Art, our relationship,

and it just feels that, it just felt natural to call you.

- Used to dealing with all sorts of characters.

You've seen Darren and Lucy on the farm

and we can solve their case.

I'm sure we can crack your case.

Give me a hug.

I think you've been going through it, haven't you?

You'll be okay.

- You know, the lake is beautiful,

but it could also be eerie, you know?

I don't know what it is

or I feel like there's something coming from the lake

to the house because like I said,

I've seen watery footprints on the floor.

The pipes, the water pipes creaking,

the shower faucets going on by themselves, water dripping,

and I just don't know what's doing it

or where it's coming from.

- Well, I had a real strong sense

about the energy in the lake

and I feel as if the lake and house are connected,

like two sides of the coin.

They're both one. - Hmm.

- Is there any way we can get closer to the lake

so we can get closer to the truth?

- Yeah, there's a trail that leads up to this hill

and we could see the lake much closer from there.

- I feel sadness.

Pain.

I feel misery.

Daniel, you're right.

Something has definitely gone on with this lake

and it's affecting you and the house.

- Never felt such power coming from waters like electricity.

A few years ago they put up a fence and it blocks our path so

this is the closest we can get without trespassing.

(wind blowing)

(grunts)

- You know what?

I have a friend who has a drone.

And he can show as close to the lake as you guys want.

- Can he come this afternoon?

- Yeah, I'll call him once we get in the house.

- I just feel I need to do some more exploring

around the lake, more investigating.

Dan? - Yeah.

- Why do you call it the dark room?

- Well, you know, I've experienced

a lot of dark energy in that room

and it's also very cold in that area.

(eerie music)

- Yeah, I feel it.

I feel the darkness

and I feel the cold. (eerie music)

- (sighs) It's connected to the stairs.

- The stairs?

- It's all connect-

Oh, sorry.

Do you mind if I just have a moment?

(footsteps pattering)

(no audio)

We'll get to the bottom of this so don't worry.

(Carl speaks over Danny) Particularly around this chair and around here.

I'm starting to feel something.

- Oh. - So yeah, I can see why you called me.

- (Daniel) Well, this is our library room.

- Oh, fantastic.

- Some of these books are very old,

belong to Art and his former lover, Joe.

And then this is John F. Kennedy

when Art worked at the White House.

Explain it, Art, when you worked at the White House.

- I didn't work at the White House.

- Oh. - I was signed there by ABC

to do special projects and things like that.

- Yeah. - So that was back in 1961.

- Right.

You're the only person that I know

that I can say I've met that's worked at the White House.

- Art was getting dinner preparing.

- (Carl) Oh, lovely.

- This was once the maid room.

It used to have a wall right here and a door,

but we knocked it out

and there's a bathroom right here with a shower.

Yeah, there's quite a powerful energy here.

And in the kitchen,

but particularly here in the maid's room.

- Hmm.

- Is this Chichen Itza in Mexico?

- (Daniel) Yeah, that was one of our vacations

we took a few years back.

- It's really spiritual there, isn't it?

- Oh, it is.

I felt a lot of energy there.

- Did you go to Tulum, as well?

- Yeah, I did. It was beautiful.

- Yeah.

That's not an Oscar.

Wow.

Let's have a look.

Is it real?

Is it a real Oscar?

- This is an Oscar from Sony. - Really?

(pool balls clacking)

- Oh, this is my son, Edward.

- Yes. - Hi.

- Nice to meet you.

Well, that was a award we received

in '93 for one of the three collaborations we did with Sony.

And they were "Shawshank Redemption,"

"Sleepless in Seattle"

and one of my favourite films, "Groundhog Day."

So that's specifically for the area of special effects.

- Wow. - We're very proud of that.

- Yeah.

- So you guys went all out on the cameras, huh?

- It's for the investigation, not a film.

- Yeah. - Well, perhaps

if you guys got some real cameras

and we're telling a truthful story,

that perhaps you guys will do something meaningful, as well.

- Well, it is meaningful, Ed.

I've been feeling a lot of bad energy in this house.

They came all the way from England

and, you know, they're here to do something

that I'm feeling in this house.

- It is meaningful. - Yeah.

- I'd like to think we're doing something meaningful.

- Yeah, it is very meaningful.

- Good luck to you. - Yeah.

- Good luck with your billiards.

- Thank you. Pool. - Pool.

- American pool. - Ah, nice.

Well, this is our attic.

You know, sometimes we've heard things up here, you know,

sometimes maybe mice or rats.

(laughs)

- But this is our little attic we have, so.

- Oh wow.

(footsteps pattering)

- Yeah, definitely some energy going on up here.

Maybe come and explore this later.

Yeah, I think Taz will come back here later.

I think there's something

that I can tune into here, but-

- (Taz) Maybe, we'll come in alone.

Here's something you might find interesting.

In 1991, Prince Charles was here.

My son, we were invited to have lunch with him.

- (Carl) Oh, wow. And that's here?

- (Daniel) No, that's Prince Charles,

but this was in, where was this, Art?

- (Carl) It was nice to see you-

- Here in LA. - In LA, but not at the house.

- No, in a restaurant.

- So you've worked at the White House,

you hang out with Prince Charles.

- And then look, he has an autographed picture

with Debbie Reynolds. - Oh, wow.

- Yeah.

Right, I definitely wanna unpack your brain later, Arthur,

about all your Hollywood connections.

- Well, you know, actually the original owner passed away

in this bathroom many years ago.

- I feel that.

I feel that shift.

So was that who you bought the property from, Arthur?

- No, we bought it from Sheila

because she gave us a very good price so we took it.

- Our computer room, our office,

whatever you want to call it.

- Oh, nice.

So Taz will be doing some editing.

I know you requested seeing some daily rushes.

- Mm-hmm.

- So could Taz set up in here to do some of the-

- Yeah, of course.

- Use it as a post-production space?

- Yeah, and you can see the Hollywood sign up there,

out the window.

- And this is my plant where we did

"Terminator 2" and "Independence Day," those movies.

- (Carl) Oh, wow so that was your office that you-

- Yeah. - And so what did you do

with "Terminator 2?" - Special effects.

- Did you do all the metal-

- We did most of it, but not all of it.

- Right. Fantastic.

- And it was called Varitel Video,

various things in television.

- There's my son in the centre

and to the left is my boyfriend

of 25 years who died of AIDS in 1991.

- Oh, here's a picture with Sharon Osborne.

Betsy Palmer, Robert England. - Oh my God.

- "Friday the 13th." - Yeah.

- "Freddy Krueger." - "Freddy Krueger."

- Oh, wow, of England. - Sharon Osborne.

- (Carl) How do you know all these people?

- (Daniel) We met her at the GLAD Awards

and these were at a horror convention, back east,

in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

So what I'm looking for

is a real kind of exploration of the lake.

So if you can get as close to the lake as you possibly can.

If anything looks odd down there,

just zoom in and shoot it.

- Odd, what do mean by odd?

- Just anything that doesn't look...

Oh, I don't know if Danny's told you why we're here.

Do you know the purpose of our visit?

- No. No.

I just got hired to film. - Okay.

- Whatever you guys need.

- I'm a paranormal investigator.

I'm not going to say we're going to see ghosts or anything,

but there may just be something out of place.

But just circulate the lake and come back

and that's what we need.

Have you done many jobs for many celebrities?

- Whoever calls. - Really?

- I did Diddy parties. - Oh, wow.

- And Paris Hilton.

(drone whirring)

- Wow.

Oh.

(drone whirring)

(birds chirping) (wind blowing)

- All right. - Wow. There she flies.

That's amazing. (curious music)

- If we can get down a little bit down around the edges,

I just wanna see if there's anything down there.

(gentle music)

It all looks quite calm.

Lots of spaces where things could hide.

(gentle music)

This gives me the perspective I need.

I'm turning into stuff Taz already.

- (Taz) Brilliant.

(gentle music)

- You wanna swing back. - Yeah.

- (Contractor) Do you want any of that far bank?

- No, I think that's all right.

I think we just can bring it back to the house.

(drone whirring) - Wow.

- Okay, I'm gonna walk around

and see if I can tune into any energy

and I'm gonna do a 360 right around the building.

- These are my 10 books,

Some are horror, some drama, thrillers,

- (Carl) Which is the most recent one?

- Well, "The Vendetta House" is a second edition.

This is my most recent published book that I...

It's a second edition of "The Vendetta House."

- So Daniel, you must be really proud

of "The Vendetta House."

I mean, to get a book published, it's pretty amazing.

- Yeah, I am.

That was one of my dreams as a teenager.

I started writing when I was 16.

- And how many books have you had published?

- I have 10 self-published books.

- 10? - Yeah, 10.

- Wow, and what are some of the others?

- Well, I have a list of genres, horror, dramas, suspense,

thrillers, and nonfiction.

These are my non-fiction chronicles.

- Oh, okay. - "The Dark Chronicles,"

The third one was the part

where I met Art while I was on the streets

of Hollywood and- - Right.

You know, I was just hustling on the streets for a while.

- And it sounds like Art seems to take people in,

care for 'em like he adopted Ed

and I mean, it sounds like he's a really good person.

- Yeah. Yeah.

He's helped a lot of people, including me

and his son and our ex roommate, Pedro,

and just many others.

He's just, he has a good heart.

- Yeah, you can see that. - For the most part.

(both laughing)

Well, you know, we all have sides to us,

but for the most part, he's a great man.

- (Carl) Yeah and how was your time

like in Santa Monica on the street?

I mean, that must have been tough.

- You know, it's a dark chapter of my life,

but, you know, I'm open about me having mental problems

and that's why it started

because I have paranoia, schizophrenia.

- (Carl) Right.

- And that's what led me to the streets

but then a good thing came out of it because I met Art

and I'm living here in the Hollywood Hills

all these years later. - Yeah.

- Married, I have a job, I have good health,

well physical health and, you know,

my 10 books published and I live here.

- Well, good things happen to good people.

And it says on the back, "He arrived alone,

desperate and scared by a past that haunted him

with a future of unknown risk.

He turned to the streets for survival."

I mean, would you say, was it really,

did it feel like survival?

- Oh yeah. Yeah.

Because there were times where I had nothing.

I had no money.

I had no...

I was hungry. I was lonely.

You know, even though I had family further

about an hour away from here, but when I came out here,

I was like almost homeless.

I didn't have a place to stay

and I had to depend on selling myself to make money

and because of my mental problems and-

- Yeah. - That's basically

how it was for me, yeah.

- (Carl) And how is your mental health now and wellbeing?

- Well, I'm on medication now so it's very,

very much better now

and it's kind of like a volume, you know?

Like before it was a 10.

With medication, it tones it down to about a one or two,

you know, it's still kind of there.

- Yeah. - But the volume

is way lower than I could live

and function like a normal, healthy person.

- And without your meds, could it-

- Oh. - Yeah. How would that?

- Yeah, without the meds when I'm off them,

it's very, very bad for me

and especially in the first few days or weeks

because that's when it's coming back hard for me.

- Yeah.

Have you ever sort of maybe labelled

some of the hauntings, the paranormal activity,

does it coincide or coexist with your schizophrenia?

- You know, it kinda does

because in the beginning I did not just see

but felt presence or if you wanna call them a presence

or a spirit or energy, a dark energy, whatever it was,

but I did feel those things

and I didn't exactly hear voices,

but I did think a lot of things in my mind

that most likely weren't true.

- And that takes courage.

You must be really, really proud of yourself.

- Look where I ended up.

I'm not dead, not in prison,

- Yeah, this is the first one, "Dark Stages,"

from before The Dark really happened

and then the second one, "Dark Stranger,"

where this is where it all started for me

and then the third one is at the aftermath of these.

And yeah, I'm gonna have a book party

with some of my friends and acquaintances

and we're gonna have the second edition launch.

- Chapter 11 looks good, "Exploring and wandering.

We all begin to walk up the wooden stairs,

our hands gliding along the old wooden handrails,

which turned the opposite way on the bottom half,

making a U-shaped turn.

Looking down we saw many dead leaves

scattered all across the steps.

Some of them were crumbled into pieces

while others were still intact."

That sounds like the wooden stairs and the leaves outside.

You must have been inspired by this house, surely.

- Yeah, it does. It does sound like that.

But honestly, I got the inspiration

from a lot of the horror movies I grew up watching,

like "Friday the 13th," and "Halloween"

and, you know, a lot of the locations are out here,

were filmed out here

how different it is now

and you do charity work now for HIV.

- Yeah, I'm a HIV counsellor and tester

and I do HIV testing at the bathhouses

and sex clubs here in LA.

HIV has gone down, but other STIs and STDs have gone up.

- Since Joe died of AIDS,

I got very much involved in raising money.

- Yeah. - You know, for AIDS

and people like Elizabeth Taylor,

Debbie Reynolds and others, you know,

were on the forefront of that.

- Yeah. - And so we held

many, many fundraisers.

- (Carl) How long was Joe your partner for?

- 25 years. - Wow.

- I met him on October 14th

and he died on October 14th, exactly 25 years.

- Oh, yes. - Well, his boyfriend

before me, the guy who played in-

- "Psycho." - "Psycho,"

Anthony Perkins was his boyfriend.

- Oh, really? - Yeah.

- (Carl) So I guess he wasn't out at the time, was he?

- Well, eventually Tony got married

and had two boys, I know,

by the time he died of AIDS in 1992.

- Did you meet him? - Oh yes, many times.

He was a really, you wouldn't think of a person

who's a movie star, you know,

but very quiet, you know insecure.

- (Carl) Right.

There's energy around here.

So the taps just turned on.

So that validates what Danny said earlier.

And yeah, the lights are here.

There's an energy and the door's just closed behind me.

So there's something quite strong happening here now, Taz.

- You know what?

Yeah, I've not liked this room since the last hour.

I feel like I'm being watched by everyone

and I'm gonna edit downstairs, I think.

- (Carl) Well, just for tonight

we can come back in the daytime,

but it's a good sign.

(lights flicker) Look.

- Get me out of here.

I'm gonna go down in my room

and just edit down there for the night.

Is that all right?

- (Carl) Yeah, I'm gonna hang out here

'cause it's a strong frequency.

- Yeah. - And.

- Oh my God. - Right.

- You started already.

- Can you just film me channel?

Is there someone in the room that wants to connect?

The energy is getting stronger.

- (Taz) Carl, I'm gonna go downstairs now.

Don't leave me doing it by myself.

I'll just go and see the edit.

Hopefully, Taz has calmed down a little bit more now.

- Yeah, yeah. - Hi, Taz.

How's the edit coming along?

- Hey, Carl. Yeah, good, thanks.

Actually, I'm not editing really.

I'm just putting the clips together still

and just doing the fronts and ends.

- (Carl) Well, show us.

(Daniel) Now my dreams as a teenager,

I started writing when I was 16, so, you know,

it's a dream come true to have my books published.

- Yeah, they're so sweet, these guys.

They're very easy to work with, aren't they?

- He's brilliant, Danny.

Do you know what?

He's been so open and vulnerable, isn't he?

- Yeah, it's not easy to talk about deep subjects like that.

- No, it's not.

I think he's really courageous.

(ominous music) - Oh my God.

- What? - That chair just moved.

Did you see it? - Taz, it's not moved.

- It's happening again. We've done it.

Did you not see it just move then?

- (Carl) Taz, replay it. It's just-

- It definitely moved.

We've called something. - Well, Taz,

I didn't see it move.

(door slams) Taz!

(suspenseful music)

Taz?

(Taz speaking indistinctly)

- (Carl) I'm trying to get it open.

- I pushed out. (suspenseful music)

- (Taz) You saw that right? That's much closer.

- (Carl) Well, yeah.

It's obviously moved now.

- (Taz) Do you see it move though, rocking?

- (Carl) Well, no, I was trying to open the door.

You locked me out.

- God, it's here.

Sent shivers down my spine.

- (Carl) Which goes to prove

it wasn't a waste of a plane journey.

And you know where we're going to start?

Where I felt the energy earlier.

- (Taz) Really?

- (Carl) Can you open it for me?

(door squeaks)

I told you I felt a really weird energy in here earlier.

- (Taz) Oh God. I feel really a cold breeze.

(light bulb fizzes)

- (Carl) This crawl space goes on and on.

- What is it, Carl? - Oh, I don't like it.

- (Taz) Oh.

Can you see? - There's a mouse trap.

They must have had mice or something.

- (Taz) Really?

(object clattering)

- (Carl) What's that?

Oh, I can see a mouse. - Oh, really?

- It's dead. - Oh.

- (Carl) Look.

(eerie music)

I felt that.

Close it.

(door squeaks)

- What's in there?

Ah! There was definitely someone there.

(Twilight meow)

- (Carl) Yeah, and they left the lantern there

and Twilight senses it. - Oh, gosh.

- (Carl) What is the lantern doing there?

- (Taz) Oh, hold that. Let's have a look.

(suspenseful music)

(air whirring)

(suspenseful music continues)

(suspenseful music continues)

(suspenseful music continues)

(suspenseful music)

(suspenseful music continues)

- So there's no one here.

- (Taz) There was definitely something, Carl.

(suspenseful music continues)

(suspenseful music continues)

- Can you just tell me what you thought you saw?

- (Taz) There was definitely a person or some...

I don't know what it was, a figure,

just looking in like a silhouette.

- What are you guys doing?

- Taz thought he saw somebody outside.

- (Taz) I just, there was definitely a figure

standing outside the window just now.

- You weren't outside, were you?

- No.

(coyotes howling) - What's that?

- You hear the coyotes? - Is that a coyote?

- Those are coyotes. - What?

- Wait. Shh. (coyotes howling)

- That's a lot of coyotes?

- Those are coyotes. - Let's have a look.

That's what you saw.

- (Taz) I didn't see a coyote, Carl.

- (Carl) I can hear them.

(coyotes cackling)

- Listen. - You're kidding me?

(people chattering) (coyotes continue cackling)

(dramatic music)

- Did you just take a shower? - No.

- The shower's still running. - No.

- Did you leave it on, guys? - No.

- You know, every now and then from time to time,

the shower's on and we don't know why, you know.

- Yeah, I've told you that happens before.

- Yeah. That happens.

- Okay, I guess that just happens from time to time.

So how's the investigation going?

- Well, funny you should say that,

I have felt today there's something

really connecting this house to the lake.

So you talked about the water.

Danny's also talked about water

and about the taps and about wet footprints.

There's a really strong energy connecting to the water.

So the shower coming on could be

somebody from the other side,

them letting you know that they're here.

And we have already sensed earlier tonight

that down in the dark room

we saw the rocking chair just rock on its own,

which really scared Taz, didn't it?

- Yeah, it did. - Yeah, that's kind of scary.

- Oh, and the tap came on

and the light started flickering in the office.

We heard coyotes and they were

really making quite a ravenous sound

like they were fighting.

What was that sound?

- Yeah, that's a sound they make when they find prey

and they're fighting over their prey

and trying to eat it and-

- Oh. - Fight over it.

- (Carl) I've never heard anything like it.

- Never. Yeah.

- And are they dangerous, the coyotes

Can they sort of bite you?

- They fight among themselves

but they don't seem to be bothered by our dogs.

They get along.

- (gasps) Even the cat's going crazy.

She bit me. - Oh my God.

- He bit me. - I'm sorry.

- Oh my God. - Twilight, you're a bad boy.

- I feel depleted.

First, coyotes are like, you know, eating each other

and now the bloody cat's chewing me.

- It's like some weird sign or something.

- Well, it's getting stronger Taz, isn't it,

when you think about it. - It sure is.

- Like first the chair, then the dead mouse,

then the coyotes and now the cat.

The energy is getting through to the animals.

- Danny? - Yeah.

- Do you have a bandaid?

- Yeah, we have one,

but I'm actually working on tomorrow's event for the party.

So why don't you go ask Art, he's back in the kitchen area.

- Okay. - Oh, guys, by the way,

do you know there's a blue moon tomorrow night?

- Oh no. - At the book lunch?

- Yeah. That's amazing, right?

- That means good luck. - I hope so.

I'm gonna need it. (people laughing)

(footsteps pounding)

- Arthur, do you have a bandaid?

Arthur?

Do you have a bandaid for my finger?

(eerie music)

Are you okay? (Arthur murmurs)

- Arthur?

(eerie music)

(shower trickling)

The shower's on.

Taz, I'm not being funny,

but this is what Arthur said.

The showers just. Where's he gone?

He's acting really strange.

- (Taz) Freaky.

- There's been a real shift of energy and you felt it?

- (Taz) Yeah, I have.

- This has to do with blue moon tomorrow night.

It's really changing. - Where's he gone?

- He can't move that quick.

Danny? - Yeah?

- Don't mean to unsettle you or anything,

but I just went out and spoke to Arthur

and he's acting really strange.

He just sort of looked out the window in the open maids room

and didn't respond to me.

- Yeah, he's done things like that before.

- It's a bit unsettling,

and he just looked at me, scared me a little bit.

And then he looked into the bathroom

and the water from the shower just started pouring out

and turned itself on. - Yeah.

(pen thuds) (suspenseful music)

- Taz, did you see where that came from?

- (Taz) Hell no. - Oh.

- Yeah, sometimes those things happen here.

I don't know.

- Wow. I'm getting weird energy.

(suspenseful music)

This is for you.

Write, trust me on this.

Tonight, on the eve of the blue moon,

you need a blank sheet of paper and just scribble.

Put every bit of emotion,

pour your heart and soul into that scribble.

It's presented itself to you.

- Do you think this is a good sign or a bad sign?

- Let's wait and see.

(suspenseful music)

(suspenseful music continues)

So Arthur was drawn to this window.

What was it that drew Arthur

to the window in the old maid's room

looking over the freeway?

Now the shower came on.

We went to the shower.

What relates to showers, water to Arthur?

Arthur's ex partner

dated Anthony Perkins who played Psycho.

We know Psycho killed somebody in the shower

with lots of water.

So something or someone is manifesting

through horror legends and legacies and stories.

(dramatic music)

Wow. It's absolutely stunning.

Danny, what are all those seats?

- Oh, that's an iconic Hollywood Bowl.

They have a lot of famous shows and artists

and bands perform there

for over 100 years now, I've been there.

- Fantastic. - Yeah.

With Hollywood, it's like city of dreams.

- Yeah, there's a lot of history here

and, you know, I'm fortunate that I ended up here

living in the Hollywood Hills with Art

all these years later, you know?

But at the same time, you know,

I'm still trying to figure out if it's my mental condition

or if it's something real

that's what the darkness is going on.

I don't know.

- Well, I think with the mental condition,

the schizophrenia and the haunting,

I mean, they can all be real.

It can all be true at the same time.

- Yeah.

- They don't have to be connected.

- Shit, there's someone in the window.

Down here, Carl, in the edit, look.

- Can't see anything. - Can you see that?

- That's just me with a lamp. - No, up here.

Can you not see that?

Let me zoom in.

It's a figure. - Make it a bit bigger.

- (Taz) Look.

I told you I saw someone watching us from the outside.

- (Carl) Well, that's on the inside.

- We were obviously being watched from everywhere,

inside and outside, Carl.

(suspenseful music)

- Hey, why are you filming the house with the cars there?

- Ed, I didn't know you were there.

No, I'm just filming the house

trying to get a nice shot for the documentary.

- Oh, okay.

How's it coming along?

How's your film masterpiece coming along?

- (Carl) Yeah, I think it's doing all right, actually.

I think, yeah, I think-

- Are you kind of fooling them,

pulling the wool over their eyes

that you're like into this stuff?

- (Carl) Do you know what?

I am actually into this stuff.

I know you keep joking about it, but-

- I'm sorry. (laughing)

- It's sounds like you're- - I just call it as it is.

- (Carl) Well, you, I mean, you know Danny more than I do,

so you must know some of the stuff he's going through.

- I guess, yeah, you know,

he feels there's a presence or something around here.

- (Carl) Yeah, well, you believe him, don't you?

- Of course not. - What do you mean?

- It's horse shit!

- (Carl) I had a little interview with Danny yesterday

and I was talking to him about the entities

and the visitors that he has,

but what's your take on it?

What do you think is going on with him?

- He came here 24 years ago

and we began to live together

and then I began to notice these kinds of things, you know?

And we had a friend who helped us get him into see a doctor

and then it manifested itself

and determined that he had, you know,

a level of schizophrenia.

He would be thinking things that just weren't normal,

like, you know, somebody's trying to get into our cabin

or we have to watch our money that, you know,

people are after us.

- Oh, I'm actually editing the fourth chapter

of my life called "A Light in the Dark,"

and it's my life basically with Art

and after, "Dark Path," chapter three,

because my other three have been published

and this one hasn't because I'm still living it, but yeah.

(Twilight meows) - Twilight.

He likes to come in the film, doesn't he?

- Yeah.

- (Carl) I love your tattoos, by the way.

- Oh, thank you. Yeah.

- (Carl) So what's the meaning behind this?

- Well, this is an archangel.

You know, I've had a lot of darkness in my life

and I got an archangel to protect me

and just help me, guide me.

And then I have these, you know, it has all my book titles,

my 10 books and, yeah.

- It's really nice. - Yeah.

- (Carl) How lovely.

- I got my own company

where we did special effects for movies.

We did "Terminator 2," "Independence Day,"

but we made our money doing restorations of movies.

Eventually got Roy Disney to let us do,

you know, a minute or so of "Fantasia"

and at that point when we showed it, you know,

side by side, he was overwhelmed.

He said, "We have to show this to Michael Eisner

who ran the studio."

And so we showed it to Michael Eisner

and Eisner said, "You have to do the whole movie that way."

- Wow.

So when you did like "Fantasia,"

so you're working for Disney,

did you do many of their other titles?

- We did 37 movies

that they had made primarily late 30s and the 1940s.

They were unusable to be even on video at that time

because the emotions and they had gotten scratches on them

and things of that nature.

- And how much did they pay you per movie to digitize?

- That one, the first one was like two and a half million,

but remember it was seven days a week, 24 hours a day,

but the picture went out

and made over $260 million in video.

When we first came to Los Angeles,

it was very, very hard

to get the major movie studios to work with us

since they had already established relationship.

I don't know, just to get away from everyone is really nice.

I just don't know what to make of last night,

but being submerged in the water,

finding my calm,

because everything has been connected to the water.

I find just being around this like...

(Carl groaning) (dramatic music)

(water sloshing) (suspenseful music)

(Carl gasping)

(water sloshing) (suspenseful music, camera crackling)

(Carl gasping)

The danger, the fear.

I'm feeling the fear, the submersion.

(Camera buzzing)

I'm starting to understand the feeling of submersion.

It's happened not just once but twice.

(dog barking) (suspenseful music)

I don't know what's making the dogs crazy, Taz.

(suspenseful music continues)

What do you think they're looking at?

- (Taz) What are they looking at?

- Wait.

There's someone down there.

(suspenseful music continues)

There.

(dog growls)

(dog barking)

(zipper reverberates)

- (Taz) Do you think this is a good time to do this, Carl?

- Oh, we've got to do it sometime.

- True. - Let's get to work.

- I'm scared already. - Oh, yeah.

What did they say? - They had fun.

(people chattering)

- Looks like fun and games out here, boys?

- Yeah. - Yeah!

- So, Danny?

- Yeah?

- Have you ever dabbled with one of these?

- Yeah, I have a long time ago,

but it's something I'm not really fond of.

- (Carl) I know, it's-

- After what happened last night,

I don't think it's a good idea, honestly.

- (Carl) I think it's because of last night,

it's absolutely the best idea.

- What happened last night?

- I'd rather not talk about it right now.

It's just, I don't think it's a good idea.

It might stir up something.

There's weird things going on in this house.

- You've called me here to find out

what's going on in the house so we need to stir things up.

- I mean, does he really need to do that?

- Yeah. - Yeah?

- Well, if you think it's gonna work or help, I guess.

- Well, it's better than playing billiards.

We're gonna get some answers.

- (Taz) We've only got a few days left as well

before our flight, so we should just go for it, really.

- Anyway, let's do it now.

No time like the present.

- Yeah, we can stop in the middle if we don't like it.

- Yeah, yeah.

Let's get Arthur.

Arthur? - Yeah?

- Can you join us in the library?

- Sure.

- So is everyone comfortable

with moving forward with this process?

- I guess so. Why not? - Yeah.

Danny?

- Yeah.

- So place two fingers on the vessel.

Slow down your breathing.

(everyone breathing slowly)

(suspenseful music)

Does any spirit reside inside this house?

(suspenseful music)

(suspenseful music continues)

What is your name?

(suspenseful music continues)

(suspenseful music continues)

(electricity fizzing)

(table thudding) - Oh, no.

No, this is getting too crazy.

I'm sorry. I can't.

- Danny, it's not crazy.

It's just, this is the process.

- I don't...

I just don't feel right doing this.

- I feel your anxiety.

Look, there's another way.

This has just opened the door,

but I have the ability to put some of the pieces together.

Okay.

It's telling me to acknowledge

that the table had moved,

acknowledge the table had moved,

acknowledge the table had moved.

It's telling me to read the room

when I'm in a bloody library.

Let's read the room.

This. It's drawn to this area.

(hand tapping) History,

Hollywood history, of Hollywood, history

of Hollywood.

We're under the Hollywood sign.

There's a history under the Hollywood sign,

history under the Hollywood sign. (murmurs)

(suspenseful music continues)

J, J, J, J, J (murmuring).

Every book tells a story.

Every book has many chapters.

This house has many stories.

(suspenseful music continues)

Every wall, every panel,

every piece of wood holds memory, as the books.

(suspenseful music continues)

Few chapters, different stories, different memories.

The books, the books, the book launch.

Daniel, it's about your book!

It's always been about your book.

That's why you've done a second edition.

You talk about the watcher, the eyes are there,

the blue moon,

the house, the lake, the vendetta.

There's a vendetta, a vendetta, a vendetta.

Who's vendetta?

It's not your vendetta. (eerie music)

You wrote the book, but you didn't write the book.

You didn't write the book.

We talked about your ability.

The pen presented itself to you

and you wrote on a scribble.

You're starting to develop a craft.

You're starting to get the awareness of the craft,

but you've always had the gift.

The gift of writing.

Maybe you didn't write the book alone.

The clues are in the book, the clues are in the book.

Acknowledge the table, acknowledge the table,

acknowledge this table, table of contents.

The family and the house, chapter one.

Who was the previous occupants of the house?

- Well, there was the old man that died in the house,

in the bathroom, the back bathroom.

I don't know his name.

- She, she, she, she, she, she.

It's not about the man.

- Oh, I know who it was.

It was Sheila.

That's who we bought the house from.

- She, Sheila. - It didn't finish.

You stopped it, you broke it.

It wasn't done writing.

- I have confirmation, it's Sheila.

Sheila, we're dealing with a situation around Sheila.

And there was a quick sell by Sheila.

There's more clues, there's more clues.

There's a story behind the vendetta.

I need to understand what is the story.

We lived at the house.

It's chapter three.

Time for vendetta.

The house watcher.

You keep talking about the watcher.

Last night, you were being watched

at the book launch through the glass.

You said it was a homeless lady.

I saw it more as a spirit.

We read it different, but it was a watcher.

There was a watcher down there today.

The dogs went crazy.

There's the watcher, the watcher.

You've talked time and time again

about feeling watched like you've been

watched through the water, through the glass.

The watcher when you're having the midnight terror,

last night you had a night terror.

You were being watched.

There's two sides of the coin.

Two sides of a coin.

There's the house, the lake, the house,

there's male, female, male, female, male, female.

Fun and games.

You were just having fun and games.

New strangers at the house, chapter nine.

Taz and myself are the new strangers at the house.

There's an unknown killer.

Who was killed?

Was Sheila killed?

Is that why you're trying to get through to Sheila?

Were you killed?

Sheila wasn't killed.

This isn't about Sheila being killed.

Blood on blood.

Blood on blood.

Does Sheila have a family?

Can you look online to see

and find out something about Sheila and this house?

There must be some information.

Just look.

- Type in the...

- (Carl) Just put in this house.

- This house. - And it was 40 years ago?

- Yes. - So 40 years ago, this house.

- What is this?

North Hollywood wanted police

for help finding missing husband.

- (Carl) Is that your house at the bottom?

- It is.

Sheila Sanders is offering a $10,000 reward

for information leading

to the whereabouts of her missing husband.

Justin Sanders, 32. - Let me have a look.

(curious music)

- The body of a local man

found in the Hollywood Hills Lake,

Justin Sanders 32, recovered after eight days.

He was down there for eight days.

Did you know Justin was retrieved from the lake?

- I did, but I didn't tell Danny.

- Why? - Why?

- (coughing) I was afraid he wouldn't move in.

- So you knew, (Arthur coughing)

there is another death here near this house

and you knew about it? - Yes.

- Well, what other secrets are you keeping from me?

- It's not a time for a fortnight.

It's a time we come together and connect the dots.

Last night when you did your scribble, what did it say?

- It spelled out attic.

- Taz, we went to the attic.

- Hmm. - And

I wasn't gonna share this with everyone,

but now's the time.

I've got to reveal what we found.

I might have some more information on.

- (Arthur) Oh God.

- This is why- - I'm sorry I didn't tell you.

- We'll talk about it later.

- (Arthur) Hmm.

- What is that?

- It was in your attic.

You wrote on the paper in your script with a pen.

And this was in your attic.

(curious music)

Do you know anything about this?

- No. You, Art? - No. Nm-hmm.

(Carl exhales)

(curious music)

- The energy, the joy, the warmth, the feeling,

the serenity I get when I wear this.

I feel like me.

I feel calm. I feel at one.

I feel authentic.

I feel joy.

I feel true.

I feel myself.

(curious music)

It's a feeling of identity, misrepresentation,

shame, fear, judgement .

(curious music continues)

Justin needs to transition.

I'm just connecting to the

duality of the situation.

Both sides of the coin,

the house, the lake,

the male, the female,

the husband, the wife.

Being pulled under your pool,

not just once but twice, fully submerged in panic.

Justin's not alone in the lake.

Sheila's down there with him.

The guilt she felt,

the quick sell of the house.

She couldn't cope.

It was an accident.

She's not to blame.

Just a harmless fight on top of the stairs.

A simple push.

He cracked his neck on the bottom step.

She didn't know what to do.

She put him in the lake

and she knew she was gonna join him.

They're down there together.

And again, the Ouija board spelling, "She."

It's not just short for Sheila.

It's how Justin wanted to identify as Justine.

Oh, I feel such injustice.

Sheila came home early one day

and saw Justin as Justine.

(reflective music)

Time was not kind to you.

Time.

Chapter 17, the past and present.

- I understand how it was for Justine.

Back then, things were very, very different.

It was mandatory in those days

you stay in the closet, you know?

Remember in those days,

I had a White House pass.

If the FBI or Secret Service

had any inkling that I was gay,

you would definitely be fired.

They were always afraid

that the Russians would compromise people like me.

So it took years and years,

you know, for all that repression to go away

'cause even if you went to a bar

and you picked up somebody,

it could be a cop and then you'd be arrested

and your name would be in the paper the next day.

(gentle tense music)

- But you're together now.

You have one another.

You're a unit.

Take strength from that.

- Times have changed a lot in the last 40 years.

You know, in the gay community

and the trans world,

there's a lot of role models now,

people who are activists,

people living their lives freely.

So many of us are thriving in society nowadays

and in the entertainment world

and sports and healthcare and education.

We don't have to be hiding in the closet anymore, you know?

We could go to the clubs.

We, the gay community, the lesbians, everyone, trans,

we could all get married like me and you got married, Art.

And HIV,

so many people are,

they have it, are undetectable

and they're on the right meds.

It's not a death sentence anymore.

And Justine,

she would be living her life.

She would be accepted in today's time,

like we are.

- Speaking through you,

your vessel, your channelling,

your mediumship, your craft,

you need to develop this.

You are gifted not only as a writer, but as a medium.

You need to tell stories of those

that aren't able to tell their own stories.

I think we need to set Justine free to the next plane.

This needs to go in the lake

and let Justin transition as Justine.

We need to set the spirits free.

Two fingers on the vessel, everyone.

(gentle tense music)

Are you ready to leave this plane?

(gentle tense music)

And now we close down the session.

Goodbye.

(board whirring)

(dramatic music)

(gentle tense music)

(footsteps tapping)

(crickets chirping)

- Looks beautiful. - It does, doesn't it?

- How are you feeling?

- I'm feeling great. A lot better.

I feel at peace now

and I think that Justine is at peace, too, now.

- Yeah. It feels lighter and freer.

And you look different.

You look carefree.

- I'm happy.

I feel like

I just feel like a big weight

has been lifted off my shoulders now.

- Yeah. - And you

not only made me see a gift that I have,

but the gift you have

setting this dark energy out of here.

- It's very rewarding, isn't it?

- It is. - And satisfying.

The darkness you felt?

Well, that was Justine's oppression.

And through your writing,

you have created light in the dark.

She only ever wanted visibility

and now you have given her a voice

to tell her truth,

to make her story matter.

- Yeah. Thank you, Carl.

(door creaks)

- Twilight, say goodbye.

Keep protecting the house, Twilight.

Goodbye.

(birds chirping)

- You know, I must admit you guys

did a nice job on this film.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any dumber,

you guys completely went ahead and redeemed yourself.

- Oh, so have I earned myself a handshake, then?

- Yeah, absolutely, brother.

I'm really impressed. - You're very welcome.

- Really proud you guys. Great job.

- Let me get a hug in

and get my second (indistinct) as well.

- Great job. - Thank you so much.

- Cheers. - Good job.

- Well, this is goodbye.

- I hate goodbye's.

- Well, thanks, Carl.

- You're gonna be good now.

You're gonna be good.

- Have a safe trip back.

- Thank you.

- Carl, I have a gift for you.

- "The Vendetta House."

(birds chirping)

Oh, wow.

"Thanks, Carl, for the help. Danny."

Well, that means a lot, Danny.

- Thank you.

Thanks for everything.

- I just realised

we never got to the epilogue.

A new beginning.

Justine's got her new beginning,

but now it's time for you.

(reflective music) (birds chirping)

(air whirring)

(birds chirping) (gentle music)

(gentle music continues) (birds continues chirping)

(Relaxing electric guitar music)
