Original subtitles

If you're reading this,

then we're gone.

>>

>> All of us.

Take this as your warning. Whatever you

find below deck, do not bring it up.

Burn it where it lies.

Burn the whole damn ship to ash.

And whatever happens,

do not let this ship reach shore.

October 10th, 1786.

All seems in order.

Fine weather for our voyage to

Constantinople.

>> Watching the tide, Tam?

Or avoiding work?

>> At my age, lad,

there's little difference.

>> Looks a fair day for sailing.

>> Aye.

And that's when the sea's most

deceitful.

>> Lashed the dark crate twice.

She weighs more than the paper says.

>> Reyes had sailed beside me 9 years.

He trusted numbers, weather,

and very little else.

>> Remember Hatteras?

>> I try not to.

>> You said that storm would kill us.

>> I was wrong.

>> Once.

>> The manifest lied in two places.

I noticed only one.

One crate is colder than the rest.

We cleared the harbor before sundown and

set our course for open sea.

The wind held steady.

The water was calm.

An ordinary beginning to what should

have been an ordinary voyage.

Ezra?

What are you doing here?

>> I

I think I heard something back here.

>> Wood settles. Rope speaks.

That's all, boy.

Back on deck now.

They'll be needing you.

>> Yes, sir.

>> Less flour.

Less salt.

And still they expect a proper supper.

One more short measure and they can boil

the bloody ropes for broth.

>> Six bowls again, Willem.

>> Unless one of you plans on starving.

Never whistle after sundown.

>> Why?

>> Wind hears you calling.

>>

>> He's having you on.

Last man I knew who whistled after dark

got married.

See?

Worse than drowning.

>>

>> Hold her east by south.

Wake me if the wind changes.

>> Aye, Captain.

>> Raya said Ezra heard something in the

hold.

He took it for the ship settling.

And so did I.

The boy is young yet.

The sea has much to teach him.

>> Tam?

>> Mr. Reyes!

On deck.

>> Quickly.

>> He never reported off watch, Captain.

>> Then we find him.

Search every corner of this ship.

Tam failed to answer the morning muster.

In 30 years at sea, I had never known

the man to abandon his watch.

We searched every berth,

every hold,

every length of rigging.

His coat remained.

>> Ferris is the one.

>> His pipe remained.

The sea gave us nothing.

>> Captain,

here.

Look at this.

These lines are scraped raw,

as though something heavy climbed them.

>> These lines were made to take a man's

weight.

No sailor did this.

>> Then what climbed them?

>> Captain,

the crate.

The one below.

I heard something there yesterday.

>> We're looking for Tam, boy.

>> I know, sir. That's why I'm telling you.

>> Nothing stays sealed.

Not after this.

Re-inventory every damn thing aboard.

>> This was the one.

>> Open it.

Who's this for?

>> Elias Varo.

Constantinople.

Manifest said antiquarian stonework.

>> I swear I heard something.

>> Enough.

Close it.

Our search for Tam brought us no closer

than before.

The cargo yielded no answer.

Only a stone of uncertain age,

bound for a man none of us knew.

>>

>> He's gone.

First Tam, now William.

Something's taking us.

>> No man alone from this moment on.

Not on deck, not below.

We move in pairs. We keep watching

shifts.

And we stay vigilant.

>> HOLD FAST TO EAST. ANOTHER TIDE COMING

IN.

>> Behind us, SOMETHING IS CLIMBING.

>> Merciful God.

What is that?

>> BRACE YOURSELVES, FIGHT IT!

>> BY DAWN,

THE storm had spent itself.

The sea had gone quiet.

Reyes

never would.

There was little left to say.

Fear had given way to something simpler,

preparation.

Ferris fashioned us a weapon.

I prepared what traps I could.

The boy helped without being asked.

We thought only of surviving the next

hour,

then the hour after that,

until that morning.

We still believed there was only one

thing beneath us.

We were wrong.
