H Ah. Ah. Another one missed today.
That’s three this week. Notify the
king. Tell him we have something.
Excuse me. Excuse me. Halt.
Why have you come? I need to speak with
the king and his people. My king, there
is something you need to see yourself.
Oh. I’m glad you’ve arrived, my
king. They told me no illness can
explain your condition.
It is not an illness. It comes when
night falls.
What have you seen?
I cannot always see it. I only feel its
presence. It approaches while I sleep.
It takes my hand and bites me here.
Each night I wake up weaker. I feel
something inside me disappearing.
Do you know its name?
I heard it only once. Ornias. He will
return.
He returns every night.
Then tonight, I will wait for him as
well. God of my fathers, You gave me
wisdom to rule, but this exceeds any
man. My lord, where are you going? And
without an escort. I’ll be back soon,
my lord. Ah. Silence. Help. Where are
you?
Who has done this to you? There is
something hidden in the shadows of this
forest. My God. There it is. I can also
enter your house, son of David. Iron
can wound men, but not me. You cannot
protect the boy, nor your kingdom. I do
not come in my own name. The God of
Israel is my refuge. It is you. You are
the protector.
Who are you? Wisdom was granted to you,
but you believed wisdom was enough.
Solomon, I want to give you something.
It will serve the work of the Most High
. This ring. In that moment, Michael
handed me the ring. What must I do?
You will use it for the construction of
the temple. You will know how to do it.
Do not forget from whom that authority
comes.
I will do so. I will not fail the Most
High.
As soon as I held it, I felt my hand
grow heavy, as if a powerful force
emanated from within it. However, as I
closed my fingers around it, the fear
that gripped me disappeared. My body
felt lighter and a new confidence
coursed through my entire being.
Michael added that I should not rely on
my own strength nor on that of the ring
, but always remember to whom the power
granted to me belonged. I thought I
understood his words. Man often
believes he can carry any gift while he
is still unaware of its weight. I
arrived as the sun was descending
behind the walls. The workers were
leaving the temple site and the first
lamps were beginning to be lit.
Everything seemed to go on like any
other evening, though I knew that at
nightfall a creature would return to
the room of a defenseless boy. His
mother greeted me, exhausted from
weeping. The boy was still in the same
bed, but his condition had worsened.
His skin had an ashen tone and he could
barely keep his eyes open. I showed him
the ring and explained that Ornias
would return that night. Wait for him
to get close and throw the ring against
his chest.
I saw fear in his gaze, but also hope.
And he will be enraged.
He will obey. Tell him to appear before
me tomorrow. The boy held the seal with
trembling hands. I did not want to
promise him that nothing bad would
happen because even I did not know what
Ornias was capable of. After giving him
the instructions, I left the house and
returned to the palace. The boy would
have to face the creature alone, as the
seal would only show its power if he
gathered the courage necessary to use
it. While I remained in the palace
waiting for some sign, the young man
was left alone in his room, accompanied
only by the flame of a lamp. For a long
time nothing happened, except for the
occasional creaking of the wood. Then,
the flame of the only lamp began to
tilt. The air turned cold and a shadow
appeared on the wall. Ornias approached
the bed. Give me your hand. It was at
that moment that the boy gathered the
little courage he had left. In the name
of the God of Israel, tomorrow appear
before Solomon. The next morning I
ordered that the doors of the throne
room be closed and that no one enter
until I allowed it.
I want you to close everything and let
no one pass. Yes, my lord.
If the boy had followed my instructions
, the creature would have to appear
before me. I remained seated on the
throne for a long time. Then, the
torches began to dim. The air in the
room grew cold and a darkness appeared
before me. From it emerged a tall being
covered by a black tunic. Son of David.
Ornias.
His skin was pale and his face showed
contained rage. Give me the ring. I
understood that the boy had obeyed.
When I put it back on my finger, he
fell to his knees. Why were you
tormenting the boy? Who do you think
you are?
At first he refused to answer, but when
I raised my hand marked with the seal,
his resistance began to break.
In the name of the Most High, answer me
.
His suffering feeds me. Ornias
confessed that he fed on the strength
of men. He did not need to kill them
immediately, as he found greater
pleasure in weakening them little by
little. During the night, I would hold
their hands and bite into their flesh
to extract a part of that which
sustained their life. And there are
others like you, son of David, you know
nothing of the invisible world. Ornias
smiled and explained to me that the
invisible world was inhabited by
countless creatures. Some approached
the sick, others sowed discord among
families, awakened violent desires, or
led rulers toward useless wars. There
were spirits on the roads, in the deep
waters, and in regions of the air.
Until that moment, I had thought I was
facing a single creature. Now answer me
, what is your weak point?
Each one is different.
Finish.
Each fallen one is watched by an angel.
You do not know who you are dealing
with, son of David.
Who are you referring to?
Beelzebub, the prince of the demons.
I then placed the seal in his hand.
Give this to your king, let him appear
before me. You will pay for this.
Ornias disappeared, taking the ring of
the Most High with him. Days passed,
and while the construction of the
temple continued, I headed back toward
the forest. As I galloped, I understood
that I had sent an order to the very
heart of hell. A few hours after
entering the forest, a cold began to
run through my body. The place grew
colder and a fog began to appear.
Insignificant human. Show yourself.
The cold took hold of the surroundings
and I saw a creature materialize before
me. I understood that I was before
Beelzebub. He stood before me with the
pride of one accustomed to being obeyed
.
So you are the son of David. And you
are Beelzebub. I expected more from a
king.
You have something that belongs to me.
I ordered him to give me the ring. For
an instant, I thought he would refuse.
When I placed it back on my hand,
Beelzebub bowed his head. He did not do
it out of respect for me, but because
the authority of the Most High broke
his will.
Cursed human, that power does not
belong here. Answer me. You will not
give me orders.
In the name of the Most High, answer me
.
I began to interrogate him as I had
done with Ornias. I asked him what his
function was and how he exercised
dominion over the spirits. He replied
that not all demons were the same, nor
did they possess the same strength.
Some served others of higher rank. Some
acted upon bodies, others upon the mind
. I had supposed that demons moved like
beasts without governance. I discovered
, instead, that they also obeyed orders
and that each one occupied a place
within their kingdom. I then ordered
him to make other spirits appear,
bring me your servants.
The first took on the appearance of a
woman of great beauty.
What is your function?
She said her name was Onoskelis,
to awaken carnal desire. in humans
and confessed that she approached men
during the night awakening desires that
ended up leading them away from their
families and oaths and thus drained
their vital energy. Then Asmodeus
presented himself.
Who are you? I am Asmodeus. My function
is to sow chaos and evil. A violent
spirit whose eyes seemed to contain
embers. He claimed he sowed chaos and
destruction among men and that he found
pleasure in destroying that which had
been joined. He did not need to raise a
sword; it was enough for him to plant a
suspicion and wait for men to finish
his work. Others arrived later. Some
confessed that they weakened the sick,
others that they tormented travelers,
and a few claimed they could hide
behind religious words to lead men
toward pride. As I listened to them, I
understood that suffering did not
always stem from a single source. There
were evils caused by our own decisions,
but also forces that took advantage of
every fear. You and your servants will
work for me. The temple continued to
rise, and many tasks required a
strength that no man could sustain for
long.
You will build the temple of the Most
High.
Beware of the ring, Solomon. I ordered
the spirits to be taken to the
construction site. I returned to the
castle believing I had even conquered
death. Having faced a demon made me
feel superior to any man. I did not
understand then that this newly
discovered strength would also be the
source of my ruin. Is someone there?
Hello, where am I? Who are you? Your
time is running out, son of David.
During the following days, I saw the
construction advance with a speed that
no architect would have believed
possible. I told my workers to go home
earlier than usual. That way, I could
summon the demons without causing a
stir.
You may leave early today.
No one knew the true cause. I had begun
by fearing the invisible world. Now I
saw it subjected before me. Every demon
revealed its secrets and every order
was obeyed without delay. I did not
notice the change that began to take
place within me. I stopped looking at
the ring as a burden and started seeing
it as an extension of my own authority.
Michael had warned me that power
belonged solely to God. But with every
spirit that bowed before my throne,
those words seemed to drift further
away. The order has been carried out.
Not yet. I came to think that as long
as the seal remained in my hand, no
creature of the visible or invisible
world could resist Solomon, king of
Israel. During the months that followed
, the construction of the temple
progressed in a way that no man in
Jerusalem could have explained. The
heaviest stones were moved during the
night, and work that would have taken
weeks was finished in a few days. The
workers attributed that speed to the
blessing of the Most High, though they
were unaware of the instruments I had
placed in service of the work. The
demons continued to work under the
authority of the seal. Ornias cut
stones and transported them from places
where no man could reach. Other spirits
raised columns or carried timbers too
heavy for oxen. My lord, the plans are
ready.
Beelzebub remained among them, humbled
by the task, but his gaze was never
defeated. He obeyed while observing my
decisions with a disturbing patience.
At first, I watched their labors with
caution. I would pronounce the name of
the Most High before raising the ring
and remembered the words of Michael
each time those beings bowed before me.
Son of David, the ring consumes you.
Silence.
You have no voice here.
As the days passed, I stopped being
surprised to see them obey and began to
consider that authority as something
that belonged to me.
My king, my king, they want to see you.
I am busy. I will go later. It is a
lady from the East, she wants to see
you.
It was then that I began to believe I
had subdued the kingdom of darkness. I
did not say it before the priests, but
within myself, I considered myself
different from all previous kings. My
father had defeated armies and giants.
I had forced invisible beings to build
the house of God. No enemy seemed able
to reach me, for I knew the names of
the spirits and the angels before whom
they trembled. Each new demon increased
that security; I would interrogate them
, listen to their secrets, and then
assign them a task. I had come to know
their hierarchy just as I knew the
organization of my own kingdom.
Beelzebub ruled over many, but he too
was subject to limits he could not
break. The temple of the Most High is
ready.
Our mission is fulfilled. Release us.
No, I will not do it. Cursed human, you
will pay for this. Stop. You have
learned quickly, son of David. It is
not a ring for men. Give it to me.
It was given to me by grace. I am King
Solomon, bearer of the sacred ring.
This power is mine. Ah. Ah. It is over,
son of David. His obedience seemed to
me sufficient proof that his words held
no value. Today I understand that he
was not trying to challenge me, but to
feed that which had already begun to
grow within me. Temptation rarely
presents itself as a threat. It often
arrives wrapped in admiration or the
promise of something we believe we
deserve. Shortly after, emissaries from
a foreign land arrived in Jerusalem.
They brought precious metals and
perfumes, but among them came a young
woman of noble lineage. She did not
show the fear of other visitors. She
observed the hall and finally fixed her
gaze on the ring I wore on my hand. To
what do I owe this pleasure? King
Solomon.
Her name was Naamah. She had heard
stories about my wisdom and the speed
with which the temple was being built.
While others spoke of treaties and
tributes, she asked me if it was true.
There are many rumors out there.
Which ones?
I hope they are good ones.
Most of them are.
I did not reveal the secret of the seal
, but my answer was born not of
prudence, but of the desire to impress
her. Is everything they say about you
controlling spirits true?
Yes, it is true. I have the power to do
so.
And by what authority do you do it?
By the authority of the Most High, the
God of Israel. Naamah belonged to a
people who worshipped foreign gods. I
knew it from the first moment and I
also knew that I should keep my
distance. It was a pleasure speaking
with you.
The pleasure is all mine.
However, I convinced myself that my
faith was too firm to be altered by the
presence of a woman. I thought I could
listen to her words without giving them
value and approach her heart without
risking my own. That was another lie I
accepted because it seemed reasonable.
During the following days, I looked for
reasons to prolong the envoys 'stay. I
spoke with Naamah about her land and
her beliefs. I intended to instruct her
in the truth, but each conversation
awakened in me a curiosity no longer
fitting for a teacher. I believed I had
defeated the kingdom of darkness
without understanding that its prince
no longer needed to resist the ring. It
was enough for him to wait for my own
pride to do for him what no force had
achieved.
What I seek is to unify my people, to
understand them. That is a noble
thought.
Thank you. It is what I think.
However, deep in my heart, something
was about to change, as my wisdom
warned me, but my heart would not
listen.
We have different beliefs. Could it
affect us?
No, I do not seek to change your ideals
, I only seek peace. I am glad to hear
that.
She never asked me to deny the Most
High. Instead, she spoke of respect,
alliances, and small gestures capable
of uniting two peoples. The only thing
I want from you is your love.
She assured me that it was not
necessary to believe in her gods to
honor the traditions of her fathers.
Those words seemed reasonable and for
that reason, they found a place within
me. Meanwhile, the demons continued
working on the temple. The columns
occupied their places, and the
sanctuary began to show the greatness I
had imagined. Each day confirmed that
the seal still obeyed me. I came to
think that this proved God approved of
all my decisions. I did not understand
that a gift can remain in a man's hands
even after his heart has begun to stray
. Benaiah remained silent. He no longer
tried to defy me. Sometimes I caught
him watching me from the construction
site with an expression I then
interpreted as resentment. Naamah
finally asked me to accompany her to a
place outside the city where the men of
her people offered incense.
They will be happy to see you.
It is an honor.
We will go to the temple.
She assured me that my presence would
be a sign of peace. I should have
refused. I knew the law and remembered
my father’s words. Even so, I
accepted, convinced that my faith was
too firm to be affected by a ceremonial
gesture. The altar was small and
surrounded by torches. There was only
Naamah, a few emissaries, and a metal
image upon the stone. Solomon, I do not
ask you to renounce the God of your
fathers. When they handed me a simple
offering, I felt the weight of the ring
on my hand.
Just allow this incense to be given to
Milcom.
I remembered the forest, the voice of
Michael, and his warning.
He hears us. I could have left, but I
did not.
It is very important to me. I will
never forget this, Solomon.
I placed the offering on the altar and
allowed the fire to consume it. It was
a brief gesture, almost insignificant
in the eyes of those who accompanied me
. But something inside me broke. There
were no thunders or voices from heaven.
The world continued as before, and that
absence of signs made me believe that
nothing had happened. Then the ring
turned cold. I returned to Jerusalem
before dawn and went with Naamah to my
chambers, since she wanted to celebrate
and spend time with me. The wisest king
that exists and ever will exist. My
mind was warning me, but my heart and
my flesh would not let me listen.
Thank you.
Let us toast to our future.
To King Solomon. I feel that with you,
I can be myself.
I feel the same for you, my king.
Every step I took, I did for her, for
love, but I was setting aside something
very important. Will you marry me? Yes,
yes I will. What became of my faith and
my conviction? Time passed. She moved
with me to my kingdom and my plans
changed from one moment to the next.
Now I only wanted to please her,
regardless of anything else. We were
married. It was the most beautiful
wedding the kingdom had ever seen. And
from that moment on, many things
changed in my mind. Day-to-day life
became a routine, a routine in which my
mind was trapped. Merchants visited the
kingdom, brought jewels from afar, and
important people visited me. I began to
see luxury, the good life, as something
I needed. Together with Naamah, we
traveled, visited new places, new
cities. I had it all, but something I
was forgetting. Something was fading
away inside of me. The presence of Him
who had given me everything, the God of
my fathers, the God of David, the God
of Israel, the Most High.
Ornias. Oh, God, what have I done? I
told you, son of David. Your time is up
.
No, it is not up.
The ring is the same, but the hand that
wears it is no longer. Grace has
abandoned you, son of David. Are you
okay, honey?
Yes, yes, it was just a nightmare.
It is time to go.
Yes, let's go. More and more I noticed
I was having the same nightmare. Again
and again, night after night.
Honey, the merchants have arrived. And
our visitors have already left.
Ah, yes, yes, honey, thank you.
You seem strange. Are you sure you are
okay?
Yes. I did not understand what it was
or why I was dreaming that. I only knew
it was tormenting me all day long. I
only thought about that. Ornias, I want
you to build the north wall starting
today.
We will do it. Despite the constant
nightmares, I felt good. I had
everything, a beautiful woman, a
kingdom. Each time I felt more powerful
. I could control the spirits. They
worked for me. I had power, but little
by little I forgot whose that power was
, but I did not think the day would
arrive so fast, the day when everything
began to crumble. Yes.
There is something I want to do, dear.
Yes, tell me.
I want an altar for Milcom.
Yes, we will do it,
since it has given us so much.
Honey, are you okay? Yes, everything is
in order.
Despite everything, the wisdom the Most
High had given me still screamed at me,
but I decided to ignore it. I began to
plan the altar to Milcom. I looked for
material, hired blacksmiths, hired
carpenters, hired stonemasons. I wanted
to create a facade so the plan to build
the altar with the ring's help would
not be seen. The people began to murmur
. They began to wonder whose altar it
was and for what purpose; since I had
previously built an altar to the God of
Israel, I decided to explain nothing
and simply turn a deaf ear until the
temple was finished. I heard rumors of
some who were starting to doubt my
beliefs, but I chose to ignore them. At
first, I thought I could please Naamah
without turning away from the Most High
. She did not ask me to abandon my
faith or to publicly deny the God of my
fathers. Her request seemed much
smaller. She desired a secluded place
where she could honor the god of her
people. In the same way that she had
done before arriving in Jerusalem. She
spoke to me of her customs, of the land
she had left behind, and the emptiness
she felt living among people who did
not understand her beliefs. I listened
to her words, and because I wished to
please her, I began to seek reasons to
justify that which I knew deep down I
should not allow. I convinced myself
that building a foreign sanctuary did
not mean accepting the god that would
be worshipped within it. I thought I
could raise its walls as a gesture of
love toward my wife while keeping my
fidelity to the Most High intact. That
was the first lie I spoke without words
, for I did not need to say it before
anyone to begin believing it. I did not
want the people to know my intentions.
I feared the reaction of the priests
and those who still clearly remembered
the law given to our fathers. That is
why I chose to do it at night. During
the day, I continued to present myself
before the people. I listened to their
disputes and spoke about the
construction of the temple. But my
thoughts remained fixed on that other
work. Which no one knew about. When the
night covered the city and the palace
gates were closed, I would leave the
kingdom in secret. I took the ring with
me and summoned the spirits to
transport the stones and raise the
walls of the pagan sanctuary. They
obeyed as they had always done,
although I could perceive a different
satisfaction on their faces. When they
worked on the temple of the Most High,
every order seemed to humiliate them.
Instead, while building that place,
they did it without protest, as if they
understood the meaning of my decisions
better than I did. Bbu never tried to
stop me. Some nights he remained apart,
watching as the columns rose under the
moonlight. I interpreted his silence as
obedience, without understanding that
he did not need to oppose me. It was
enough for him to see me use an
authority received from God to raise an
altar dedicated to a foreign deity.
Little by little, I began to distance
myself from my people as well. The
audiences seemed long to me. The needs
of men interrupted my thoughts. And the
responsibilities I once considered
sacred became a burden. I waited
impatiently for the night to fall,
because only then could I leave the
palace, meet with Nama, and watch the
progress of the work I had promised her
. Each stone placed in that sanctuary
drew me a little further from what I
had sworn to defend. However, my fall
was so slow that I failed to recognize
it. I still prayed, I still spoke the
name of the Most High, and I still
carried the seal in my hand. That is
why I believed my faith remained intact
. I did not understand that a man can
keep the words of his belief long after
he has turned his heart away from it.
When the foreign temple was nearly
finished, Nama asked me to enter with
her and offer a small tribute. She
assured me it would not be an act of
worship, but the final gesture needed
to show her that her people and her
gods had a place within my kingdom. By
then, I had already given in so many
times that this request did not seem
greater than the others. That night I
walked toward the altar, convinced that
I could still turn back whenever I
wanted. I did not understand that I had
been drifting away for a long time, and
that every step taken to please the
flesh had led me to a place where the
ring's power could no longer save me
from myself. Oh. Where are you? Where
are you?
What happened? What are you looking for
? Ornias. Oh God, what have you done?
God, forgive me. I was not seeing, I
was not listening.
And it was in that moment that the
scales fell from my eyes. I was not
seeing with my eyes, for I had a
spiritual blindfold. I understood then
that I had never mastered the demons
through my wisdom or my lineage. They
obeyed because I remained under a
greater authority. By turning away from
it, I had been reduced to what I always
was. A man holding a piece of metal.
The spirits disappeared before the sun
rose. No one could explain why the work
stopped that day. I did not tell the
truth either. For years, I tried to
justify myself. I told myself I had
acted out of love, for diplomacy, or
for the well-being of the kingdom. In
time, I understood that all those
reasons hid a simpler truth. I had
preferred to satisfy my desire rather
than obey. Michael had warned me that
the power did not belong to me.
Beelzebub had shown me that a gift
could turn into pride. Ornias had
taught me that some spirits destroy men
little by little. However, none of them
was responsible for my fall. The door
was opened by my own hand. I write
these words so that no one confuses my
story with the victory of a king over
demons. I saw the invisible world and
forced ancient creatures to bow, but
all of that did not make me invincible.
The ring could subdue spirits, but it
could not govern my heart. That was the
enemy I never managed to chain. I did
not abandon the Most High in an instant
. First, I stopped placing His will
above my own. Then, I began to
interpret His commandments according to
what I found convenient. Finally, I
came to believe I could keep His favor
while using His gifts to satisfy
desires contrary to the purpose for
which they were given. The power I
received had a purpose. It had not been
placed in my hands to magnify my name.
To satisfy my desires, nor to prove I
was superior to other kings. It was
granted to me to build a house
dedicated to the living God and to
fulfill a work that belonged to Him. As
long as I remembered that purpose, the
gift was a tool of obedience. When I
separated it from its origin, I tried
to turn it into a personal possession.
That was where my true loss began. I
did not lose the gift because the Most
High was fickle, nor because the seal
had ceased to hold meaning. I lost it
because I wanted to keep the authority
without remaining subject to the One
who had granted it to me. I wished to
continue using God's power while my
heart learned to live far from Him. But
no gift replaces obedience. A crown
cannot do it. Neither can wisdom. Not
even the ability to subdue invisible
beings could protect me from the
consequences of my own decisions. The
greater the authority I had received,
the greater my responsibility became.
That which had been a sign of divine
favor ended up revealing the gravity of
my disobedience. I also understood that
idols do not need to have life to
dominate men. An image of metal does
not listen, does not speak, and does
not answer. Yet, it can occupy the
place that belonged to God when a man
places his desires, his affection, and
his obedience in it. The true power of
an idol is not found in the stone or
gold with which it was formed, but in
what the heart is willing to sacrifice
to serve it. I was not defeated by the
strength of a foreign god. I was
defeated by my desire to please myself.
The flesh promised me that I could
obtain what I desired without losing
what I had already received. It made me
believe I could live between two
loyalties, keep the appearance of
faithfulness, and at the same time feed
what took me away from it. That promise
is always false. A divided heart ends
up leaning toward what it feeds the
most. When I was finally able to see it
, I understood that my greatest enemy
had never been in front of my throne.
Demons could be interrogated, named,
and subdued. My own desire, however,
hid behind arguments that seemed wise.
It spoke with my voice, used my
thoughts, and turned my knowledge into
a defense of my disobedience. That is
why it was more dangerous than all of
them. My story shows that a man can
overcome great forces and still remain
a slave to himself. He can raise
temples, govern nations, and be admired
for his wisdom. While inwardly turning
away from the purpose that gave meaning
to everything he received. The Most
High gave me a gift so His name would
be honored, but I let that same gift
feed my own greatness. He gave me
wisdom to lead His people, but I used
it to justify my desires. He showed me
the fragility of idols, yet I ended up
bowing my will to that which had no
life. The blindfold fell from my eyes
when I could no longer mistake God's
favor for my own ability. Then I
understood that the purpose had never
been to show how much power my hand
could hold, but how long my heart could
remain in obedience. That is the truth
that remained after everything. A man
does not lose his way only when he
stops believing in God. He can also
lose it when he continues to speak His
name, but no longer lets His will
govern his decisions. I had sinned by
swearing loyalty to foreign gods. I
fell into the desire of the flesh and
pushed God from my heart, and despite
my failings and all my sins, He did not
stop loving me. He received me with
mercy and granted me His forgiveness.
