What?
What have I become?
I do not feel the pain I once did.
I cannot
I cannot swear the Lord's name.
And this hunger
this unspeakable hunger
I cannot resist it.
To tear
>>
>> flesh.
>>
>> What kind of monster
am I now?
Two days.
Two days in this village
and sleep feels like a gift.
A gift denied to me.
There is something here I do not yet
understand.
I came to serve these people
to tend to their sickness, to ease their
suffering.
But all I can say
is that I feel the suffering
in myself.
Now.
They feed me.
They keep me sheltered.
And still I lie awake
listening to a silence that feels wholly
unnatural.
These people are not living.
They are surviving.
Surviving beneath a fear I cannot yet
comprehend.
Not one soul here will meet my eye.
And I cannot help but wonder
what it is they are so afraid I might
see.
I've seen farmers cross themselves at a
black cat.
I have never seen a whole village hold
its breath.
Not like this.
Not for the turning of the light.
They shut even the doors of their own
church after daylight.
Against the faithful.
You show me great kindness, madam.
And yet
no one will say why your doors close
before the sun has set.
>> Kindness, doctor,
is not the same as welcome.
And some doors
are better left closed.
>>
>> I noticed the villagers no longer
flinched at the bell.
They simply obeyed it.
The way old men obey pain.
Without surprise.
Without question.
This morning the innkeeper came to me
with word of a woman
dead in the night.
Taken, she said, by some sickness.
I knew only that if I was to be of any
earthly use in this village
I must see the body myself.
Can be.
I have set the bones of men mauled by
wolves.
I have dressed the sores of plague.
But never
not once
a body so empty.
As if something had poured her out
like water
from a cup.
>> Tell me plainly.
What manner of thing did this to her?
>> Elias.
>> Say it again. What name did you give it?
>> N- No. N- No say two time.
He he come you say two time.
>> I was wrong.
This was no sickness.
Her murderer walks among us
in the shape of a man
or something that only wears the shape
of one.
I have seen nothing in medicine to
explain this.
There is no science
that will justify what I have seen.
>>
>> The sign.
>> Who is there?
>>
>> Reveal yourself
at once.
>> No sane man leaves his house at this
hour.
And yet,
that voice,
I must know its matter.
I am a man of science. I will
not let fear nest in my heart.
A castle
in the heart of this village.
Days pass here,
and still this place finds new ways to
unsettle me.
Something in that castle is calling me.
I want to leave.
And yet,
my body is not obeying my mind.
I was awaiting you, Doctor.
Sit.
You must be hungry.
I did not come here to dine, sir.
I came because
I could not stop my own feet.
Tell me why.
Sit,
and I will give you the answer.
Please
start with your dinner.
>> God in heaven, what is this?
WHAT MANNER OF DEVIL SET SUCH A TABLE?
>> Only a host, doctor.
Offering what I myself find
nourishing.
>> Why does my body no longer answer to me?
>>
>> Tell me.
>> Because there are things older than your
medicine.
Older even than your God.
Your science has no word for what walked
you here tonight.
And it will have no word
for what comes next.
>>
>> No.
Please.
No.
