In Hollywood, a family rides a double-decker, open-top tour bus.

Groundbreaking commenced on February 8, 1960, and today, nearly 3,000 stars

grace the Walk of Fame, from Tallulah Bankhead to Dr.

Phil. How far is the ocean?

I don't know. According to the map, it's 16 miles from our hotel.

Hey, that's not too bad.

With the current traffic condition, the drive should be 78 minutes.

That can't be right. We must have gotten the addresses mixed up or something.

Dad, I know how to use the app.

Huh, it's updating.

Travel time is 84 minutes. The boy looks disappointed.

never gonna see the ocean in a car i actually grew up on an island manhattan

sturdy pair of boots you can walk from one end to the other before sunset here

you can't get a carton of milk or a loaf of bread without four wheels the driving

instructor looks nervous so please use your turn signal it's not just for

making turns it's also for changing lanes don't like the name for you in a

driverless car don't crash on me

No, no, no, not you, sir, no. My laptop's just a little slow to respond

to commands, but ETA is 30 minutes or less.

No, sir, you don't get a pizza if I'm late.

Unless you want a pizza? I'll tell you what I want.

I want men like you to pay for your crimes.

In another car, a blonde woman reads lines from a script. Against women who

just want to love you.

Notifications for food delivery orders appear on her phone.

Next stop, downtown Los Angeles.

And though it's less than six square miles, downtown actually contains more

than 15 different neighborhoods.

And it's home to amazing sights. On the bus, the dad looks at his phone.

Oh, it says here in L.A. there are 25 Michelin star restaurants.

What list are you reading from?

His wife takes it.

Ten reasons to move to Los Angeles.

in the student driver car i never planned on relocating not at my age and

certainly not to the other side of the country but my daughter needed me she's

in the middle of a divorce and she's got her own kid now i want to see pictures

guys on the road morty please you want to move here why my brother offered me a

job since when do you want to work for your brother it's a good opportunity not

just for me for all of us what about school all my friends my boyfriend you

can go long distance with jeremy until college you know jeremy can't get into

college i will not be shamed for my choices you are no longer in control of

me the blonde gets more food delivery orders no i do not want to export to a

gif i hate technology turn left on grass avenue she nearly hits a car then

catches a drink before it falls

Morty sprays the washer fluid. The blonde spills the drink on her lap.

The blonde reaches for her phone, then swerves away from an oncoming car and

veers toward the tour bus.

She slams on the brakes. The bus turns toward the student driver car.

Morty stomps on his brakes.

He lightly bumps into the side of the bus and the family looks down from the

second level.

Cars surround the bus.

The street splits apart beneath the vehicles. A

massive sinkhole opens up and the vehicles fall inside.

The businessman stares wide-eyed as his driverless car stops at the edge of the

sinkhole.

Rerouting.

The car backs up.

Rerouting, rerouting. Oh, I love technology.

The aerial view shows the sinkhole getting larger. A title, 911.

The 118 arrives at the scene in the fire truck. They move people away from the

sinkhole.

Eddie and the others look down into the hole at the people and vehicles.

11 Thursday.

How does that even happen?

Sinkhole. Soil underground shifts. Road on top fails.

Looks like a pie crust with no filling.

Cracks form.

I'm getting bigger. Everybody move back!

The street collapses under chimney.

Another car falls into the hole.

As chimney hangs from the edge, Robbie helps him up.

Chimney looks down at the piles of debris.

Water pours from broken pipes.

Thanks.

All right, let's move all the rigs back.

I don't want anything within 20 feet of this edge.

Harness is on. Anybody goes down to the hole is on the line.

Wearing harnesses, the team rappels down into the deep sinkhole.

Looking good. Nice and easy, guys. That's it.

People wave for help.

Buck and the others reach the bottom. The mother from the tour bus holds her

son as water falls over them.

Get you and your son to safety, okay? We'll bring them back to you.

All right.

Follow me, buddy.

Help! Wait!

Where?

Where? Show me!

Harry, come on!

I'm ready to get him out of the car, but every time he starts to move, I... His

name's Morty.

Morty? Hi, I'm Hen.

Listen, I'm gonna lift your shirt here a little, figure out if I...

icd hen looks at morty's feet submerged in water seat warmer electronics it's

submerged it created a circuit with his icd he can't stop defibrillating hen

tries to turn off the seat warmer morty jolts again that's not working each

shock is 800 volts the battery could explode if we don't shut it off it

sounds like you're gonna stop the torque not for long on the tour bus the teen

daughter kneels by her father buck approaches them

fine they're on their way out so let's worry about you for now okay okay

chimney spots a utility pole tipping over buck looks up as it falls toward

the bus the pole lands atop the vehicle

sparks fly from the power lines pinned under debris the father grabs buck

first get my daughter out of here

The daughter shields her dad with a jacket as Robbie uses the saw.

Penn and Harry tend to Morty.

Chimney pulls a rescue worker back as more of the edge collapses.

Penn and Harry look up with grave expressions.

Chimney turns to the team members near him.

Buck works to free the father.

Dad, it's going to be okay.

Okay, that's enough.

Let's get his legs stabilized before we try and move him.

You should have gone with Billy and your mom.

You'd already be safe.

Stop, I wasn't leaving you.

I thought you couldn't wait to get away from me.

i lost my job six months ago so you agreed to work for uncle pat

nobody else wanted me the basket stretcher

lowers down from the crane all right here it comes hen and harry guide it

down next to morty they gently lift him onto the stretcher and his body jolts

again hen holds up a round magnet

Morty grimaces as he jolts again.

Hen sets the magnet over his ICD and tapes it down.

Looking up at her, Morty jolts from another shock.

He slowly lies back on the stretcher and closes his eyes.

Eddie helps the driving instructor.

Harry ascends with the basket.

The crane stops working.

Harry uses the radio.

Harry

looks

up at the cable leading to the crane arm.

He disconnects his harness from the cable.

he falls back into the sinkhole harry lands in

water and sinks out of view the hoist winch motor starts working and the crane

lifts morty on the basket stretcher nice and easy

eddie and others grab the basket hen searches underwater for harry there we

go eddie removes the magnet and performs chest compressions on morty

underwater harry finds the blonde woman trapped in her car she surfaces to

breathe from a small pocket of air morty opens his eyes

there we go there we go there we

go all right let's go let's get him out of here now harry surfaces what the hell

happened to you tell him there's a lady down there she's stuck in the car yeah

we've got a woman trapped underwater

Ravi leads the father and daughter out of the sinkhole Eddie joins Harry

Trapped

in her car the unconscious blonde woman drifts underwater Eddie swims down and

looks at her through the window Using a small hammer he breaks the glass and

knocks it away Eddie leans into the vehicle

Grabbing the woman, he pulls her out.

Hen and Harry watch as he returns to the surface.

They hoist the woman out of the water and lay her on her back.

Eddie rubs his fist against her chest.

Dad! Can you hear me?

Come on.

Come on.

Coughing up water, she sits up.

Yeah, that's everyone, Cap.

All right, then get her up here.

As he gets loaded into an ambulance, the father watches his family embrace.

There you go. Oh, my God.

Are you okay?

I was so worried.

The father remains on the gurney as his wife and son climb inside to hug him.

i don't like california the daughter looks in well you better get over it

because i think dad's right we shouldn't move to california why she joins her

family inside it's so boring back home we've been here less than a day and

we've already had an adventure she and her dad share a smile the teenager hugs

her mom then her dad chimney approaches his team

everyone and start moving everyone back and off the street the ground shakes

while there's still a street left an overhead view shows vehicles and debris

lying in the sinkhole frothy bubbles appear in the murky brown water a party

balloon rises to the surface it reads happy 10 years

At City Hall, officials gather in the conference room.

Maddie enters and Chief Simpson spots her.

Maddie, good to see you. Chief Simpson, hi.

I didn't know this would be so formal.

First post-mortem, huh?

Don't worry, he usually goes easy on dispatch.

Okay, let's get this started. Everybody take your seats, please.

As the officials take their seats, Maddie stands off to the side with

others.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Ty Worrell, Office of Emergency

Management. This is Melinda Wright, my deputy.

Please check these data sheets.

They reflect what each of your agencies sent to OEM.

Second Street, St. Cole.

We lost about half a block of critical infrastructure.

A water main that serves 2,000 households.

Not to mention the impact on Metro and the grid.

And nobody in this room...

Saw it coming.

I'm going to start with USGS. Dan, there were no seismic precursors?

Yes, sir.

Only background levels on our network. Only background levels. So Dan doesn't

really know, does Dan?

Melinda, what did we get from street services?

For second in Maple, they said zero service calls in the past year.

Nary a pothole.

Metro, your crews in the tunnels didn't notice anything?

No, sir. That's what my guys are telling me.

That's what your guys are telling you?

Well, I'm telling you, I've been in civil service for 30 years, and I've

never been caught with my pants down in so public a forum.

A lot went wrong here, but I think it's worth mentioning what went right.

LAFD pulled 36 people out of that sinkhole with no loss of life.

That's something to be proud of. That's also 36 lawsuits coming my way.

Now, come on, people. There were zero warning signs.

Zero. And there was one warning.

Ty turns to Maddie and reads her name card.

Maddie Buckley-Hahn, 911 dispatch.

Oh, you're the new Sue Blevins.

She's still recovering, so I'm here and new.

Not to dispatch to management.

Okay. Well, we're all getting older, waiting for the end of that story.

Right.

In the two days leading up to the sinkhole, there was a 20% uptick in

calls from that area.

What kind of calls?

That I don't know.

Do you think you could find out for me?

Maybe you could run a full audit of all the 911 calls within a two-mile radius

of the sinkhole. Go back six, eight weeks, listen to all the calls, mark

them down, let me know what you find.

That's hundreds of calls.

Get it to me by Monday.

At the hospital, Eddie hurries into the ER.

He finds Theo sitting behind a nurse's station.

Theo, hey, you okay, buddy?

Yeah. Good. Hey, where's Buck?

Buck gets his nose examined.

Oh, my.

What are you doing here?

I called your phone. Theo answered. Said you guys were at the hospital.

Right. I let him play with my phone while we waited for the doctor to look

at my nose.

Which is definitely broken, but I'm not seeing any signs of a concussion.

You need me to prescribe anything for the pain?

No, I'm good.

The doctor goes to a computer.

Okay, now your turn.

What the hell?

I tripped.

I fell headfirst into a door jam, no big deal.

You trip a lot?

According to your records, you've had four non-work-related ER visits in the

past three months.

Uh, yeah, I'm pretty clumsy.

Huh.

Nurse will be in shortly with your discharge paperwork.

The doctor eyes Eddie as she walks away.

So you can actually tell me what happened?

Let him watch Nacho Libre.

He was inspired, his aim less so.

He hit you in the face?

He didn't mean it.

He was laughing and flailing his foot just... What about those?

More wrestling?

Oh, no, those are old. Theo holds a dinosaur toy.

Buck.

He can't just keep... Look what I got!

What? Oh, that is so cool.

Hey, check it out, Eddie.

Okay,

buddy. You ready to go home?

could we get ice cream on the way as if i'm ever gonna say no to ice cream come

on let's get out of here eddie shakes his head yeah and that's the problem

athena walks with may yeah so they have me doing that and then the nurse just

goes stick him like an actual human being two mils of penicillin right in

the hip they really believe in sink or swim around here well what about you

what do they have you running a murder heist a serial killer kidnapping yeah i

took a lead on it ran a full canvas multiple witnesses got that victim home

in less than 24 hours mom that's amazing i must have missed that on the news what

was the victim's name pickles may eyes her mom the suit turns out he had gotten

into the shed next door had the whole neighborhood up in arms Okay, that

doesn't sound like a case. That sounds like a sad next-door post.

Well, you're a student. You know how these things go.

I mean, they never give the new kid the big case on day one.

Mom, I'm the new kid, and they shoved a syringe in my hand on week six.

You've been a cop for 30 years, and they put you on PAW Patrol?

Okay, look, no one has put me on anything.

You put yourself on it, and I just don't understand why.

Well, you said so yourself.

You've been in uniform 30 years, and...

Now I'm a rookie again.

They promoted you for a reason, Mom.

Yeah, I got shot in the chest.

You think that's why they made you a detective?

Like some sort of consolation prize?

Well, I think that I can never know for sure.

But it makes me wonder if maybe the reason I never got out of the old car

was because it was all I could handle.

No, I don't believe that.

And you shouldn't believe that either. You're Athena Grant.

Show them what she can do.

When the opportunity presents itself.

When have you ever waited for permission to act?

You make your own opportunity, Mom.

Okay?

Because the perfect case isn't just gonna fall into your lap.

A man gets thrown out of a van outside the hospital.

Hey! Wait! Hey!

May runs to the badly burned man.

Grant.

Detective Newell.

What are we looking at?

John Doe.

Badly burned.

Second and third degrees. Over 80% of his body.

Still waiting on the full report.

His hands are too barbecued to pull a clean print.

Any other ID?

Just this.

She shows a ring.

Wow. Diamond.

I mean, not a big one.

But not cheap either.

John Doe's got income.

Well, this man is. He loves someone.

Athena turns to Newell.

Look, you owe it to both of them to put that ring on her finger.

I can sense the ask a mile away. I want this case, Newell.

No leads, no ID.

I don't want you to strike out your first time up to bat. Which is exactly

why I won't.

Laura, detective, the dance floor is yours.

Newell hands the engagement ring box to Athena.

At an aquarium, a nurse finds an old man looking at fish.

Mr. Frankel!

Mr. Frankel!

What did we say about wandering off?

We don't want to miss the show.

Welcome, Golden Palm Senior Center.

I'm Aqua Arnie, and this is my favorite tank, the Tropical Tank, home to many

different species, including scuba stew.

Welcome to 300,000 gallons of South Pacific right here in Los Angeles.

Around me is 49 different species, with the biggest being coral, followed by

groupers and the sharks.

Did he just say sharks?

he sure did we've got zebra sharks and gray reef sharks oh and that fella is

our queensland grouper the scuba diver stew reaches for his mask just

like the human body stew rubs his wetsuit every

life form on earth began in the ocean dead fish float around him

we all started in the same water wonderland uh arnie

yeah the nurse points to stew who struggles in the tank dead fish rise in

the water a call transcript appears

911 what's your emergency there's something in the water has maps in

route martinez run a one inch decot line buck give me access to this tank copy

you uh is he no you see the bubbles from his regulator Yeah, he's still

breathing. Okay. All right, holler if that changes.

Copy that.

Hey, guys, I got access. Let's go. All right, coming to you.

Toby, hang back.

Gotcha. Holler if the bubbles stop.

Above the tank, Buck looks at a meter.

We got sulfur fumes.

And another problem.

I tried to pull it up, but his tether just fell apart.

Can Eddie get in there? Yeah, I can.

You see your hands? Eddie examines Arnie's red hands.

Looks like chemical burns.

Hey.

the normal pH of this tank is? We keep it at 8.1, same as the ocean.

I've got 0.6 and dropping fast.

Something is turning this thing into acid.

Find the filter pump and shut it off.

Ravi, run the siphon ejector off the engine. We can't go in after him, but

with enough time, maybe we can suction all this out.

Harry watches Stu as bubbles stop rising from his mask.

Hey, Cap, he stopped breathing. Okay, we've got 60 seconds.

Buck sticks a long pipe pole deep into the tank.

The pole lowers towards Stu.

The hook at the end of the pole snags onto Stu's tether.

Slowly,

Buck lifts the pole out of the water, dragging Stu along with it.

Come on.

Grab him, grab him, grab him.

One, two, three.

They pull Stu out of the water.

Watch it.

We got you, buddy.

Pull the suit off.

Suit's burned through to his skin.

Careful. Here we go. They cut the wetsuit off, revealing his burned skin.

Starting a line?

Let's get his heart rate.

Eddie tries to attach the lead.

Cat, the leads won't attach. His skin's melting off.

Try bagging him. You got it.

They put a bag valve mask onto Stu's face and pump air.

Come on, come on, come on. Three more pumps.

No chest rise, bag's not working. Airway's too damaged. We need a cry kit.

Got the scalpel.

Hen grabs a scalpel, then feels Stu's neck.

Push your socks and rock.

Jim, I can't feel the cartilage. If I got the wrong spot, I slid in his

jugular. You kind of have to.

Got it.

Watch the karate. Easy.

I'm easy.

Using the scalpel, Hen makes a small incision in the front of Stu's neck.

I'm through the cartilage. Here comes the endo tube. He's adding. 61, 60.

Try the bag again. They connect the bag to the tube.

Here we go. Come on.

They pump air into Stu's lungs.

All right, O2 sets at 70.

Stu opens his eyes.

They're rising. 75.

Nice work, Hen.

Hen looks relieved.

Later, an old woman watches Stu get wheeled away on a gurney.

I think we should go to the flea market next week.

I think that's a good idea.

Listen, Hen checked your filtration system. Couldn't find anything wrong

with it, so DWP is en route.

Where's your main water supply?

Underground. We're LEED certified, so we draw it from an aquifer. But our

salinity has been iffy since we automated.

It must be a random glitch.

Hell of a glitch.

Chimney and the team walk by another tank with dead jellyfish in it.

Traffic cams caught the van a block west of the hospital. Then lost it. Stripped

the plates.

Nothing left for the system to follow.

At a construction site. System got an upgrade six months back.

We used the new software on patrol.

It can track objects inside the car.

It's like a key fob.

Well, that's a handy upgrade.

Slightly Orwellian.

Can I help you, too?

Yeah, Detective Grant Newell, LAPD.

We're wondering if you can identify this van.

She shows an image.

Looks like one of mine.

I did a head count early this morning. All of them are here on site.

Is there any way to tell who might have been behind the wheel?

Drivers come and go.

It's musical chairs with the keys.

Anybody in particular you're looking for?

This guy.

He shows the burn victim.

Damn. I think that might be Corbett.

One of my day guys.

The detectives share a look.

Is he... Alive?

For the moment.

What can you tell us about him?

Not much, really.

Plumbing, cement, any tool in the toolbox.

Guy knew his stuff.

Got any family?

Next of kin?

We found this in his pocket. He shows the ring.

No, never talked about a girlfriend.

But he was quiet type. Kept to himself, did the job.

Can we see his paperwork?

Logistics have never really been my thing, but I can liaise with human

resources when they get back from, you know, not existing.

Excuse me, sir?

Sir, can I have a word with you?

A worker with a bandaged tan runs away.

Hey!

Hey!

Sir! Chasing him, Athena bumps into a tall worker.

Newell blocks the fleeing man.

Think we can have that word now?

Athena notices a burn on the tall man's neck.

Maybe more than one.

She grabs his arm and leads him away.

At home, Christopher looks at the screen time data on his phone.

Five hours and 17 minutes a day? I mean, that's not bad.

Still not great.

Theo runs around playing.

Okay, what's yours?

One hour and 33 minutes. I know how to exercise restraint.

Buck scowls at Eddie.

Anyway, what about you?

uh 11 hours and 54 minutes at least half of that screen time is theo's theo dumps

a bowl of fruit onto the floor uh hey so dinner was uh was great why don't i help

you clear it theo wears

the bowl as a helmet maybe we'll make a pit stop on the way home i

have a toy race car in my room i'll go get it for theo Oh, hey, Chris, that's

so nice.

I'm sure Theo is going to love it. Thank you. Theo kicks a ball, knocking

Christopher down.

Chris! Chris!

Hey, are you okay?

You okay?

Yeah,

I'm okay.

You sure?

Yeah, really, it's no big deal.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it.

I know.

Let's get you up.

Hey, maybe we should just go.

Yeah. Maybe you should.

Detective Grant, everybody!

First case down! First case down! Mikey, ring the damn bell!

Athena, say something. No, no, not for me. No, no, no, it's cider.

How'd you crack it, Grant?

Just a lucky break.

There was action, there was suspense, there was a chase right out of Casino

Royale. It was a brief foot chase.

Let me paint the picture.

So Grant clocks this guy's burns from a mile out. Then she gets his foreman to

fold like a lawn chair. The guy confesses to the whole thing.

Construction accident.

Couple of six-packs, asphalt melter, John Doe takes a tumble, his buddies get

spooked, they drop the body. Cheers, Grant!

Cheers to Grant.

Athena steps away as she answers her phone.

Yes,

Detective Grant.

She looks concerned as she listens.

Well, thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, bye.

Newell approaches as she hangs up.

Corbett didn't make it. That was the hospital. He died 20 minutes ago.

But not before you got him justice.

Doesn't feel that open shot.

I mean, the man confessed in five minutes.

You gotta stop doubting yourself. And I still haven't found his next of kin.

Who that ring belongs to? Partner, that is a tomorrow problem.

Don't let it overshadow today's success.

Great job.

As he returns to the bullpen, Athena wears a tense expression.

A call transcript appears.

At home, Maddie listens to numerous calls and separates them into different

categories. She puts pins into a map with the sinkhole location circled.

Hey.

Chimney startles her.

God, you're like a cat.

Yeah, a lonely cat. Why don't you come to bed?

Hey, can I show you something?

These are all the calls from downtown Wednesday morning.

Look at how many.

Yeah, that's a busy part of town. No, this is only 8 to 10 a.m. And a lot of

the calls were just weird, like this first caller, convinced that her

building is haunted, heavy sense of dread, shadowy figures in the corners of

her eyes. Carbon monoxide, next.

Wrong. The air tested clean, but in this same six-block radius, we had insomnia,

headaches, mass anxiety, and then this guy, he goes to a dog park and finds out

that all the foliage is dead, black, wilted, overnight.

A gardener with a grudge? But how does that explain the rest of downtown L.A.?

Maybe it was something in the water.

Wait, what?

Okay, wait. Yesterday we did have a call at the aquarium.

Water in one of the tanks, it was acidic.

They said there was some kind of glitch in the purification system.

Wait, the aquarium on 8th? Why don't I have this?

Because it happened yesterday.

After the sinkhole?

Chimney nods, and Maddie wears a concerned expression.

In bed, Ty sleeps with a CPAP mask.

he wakes up to a call from an unknown number what hi

um director world this is maddie we met at the ugly hunt do you know what time

it is what if i told you that i found evidence that maybe something bigger is

gonna happen bigger like what that i don't know but i've been auditing these

calls and there's something unusual well what like a pattern no pattern which in

a way could be a pattern right

Are you drunk?

With strange smells, unexplained noises, outages, 5150s, runaway dogs, 11, which

is off the charts. Listen to me.

Put down the bottle and go to bed.

Ty ends the call.

Maddie's map shows pins all over downtown L.A. around the sinkhole

location.

At the station, Athena works in the dark bullpen alone.

She goes through traffic camera footage on her laptop.

It shows a view of a large intersection.

She watches the footage in fast motion.

A white utility van pulls up to the curb and construction workers get out.

In the morning, Athena continues to work.

Newell arrives with coffee.

Figured it was my turn for the coffee run.

When did you get in?

Never left. I've been going through the evidence all night. Evidence of the case

we just cleared?

There was just something about the victim's burns that never sat right.

So I talked to the coroner. Those blisters, the peeling, that's what you

call a hydrothermal burn.

Caused by what? Steam, most likely, but not direct heat exposure. I mean, it's

just not consistent with an asphalt melter. And here, I start wondering...

There was a van before the hospital, so I ran back at the clock and then I

tagged it here at this corner doing five-hour shifts eight days last month.

For what? Who knows, Grant.

Let it go. Take the W.

Newell taps his fist on the table, then leaves.

Looking thoughtful, Athena returns her focus to the traffic cam footage.

She zooms in on a jewelry store across the street.

She looks at the engagement ring.

Then back at the store.

At the call center, Maddie stares at her mug as she pulls a teabag out of the

water.

Josh approaches.

Late night?

I think I'm letting this audit drive me crazy.

Anything I can help with?

She gets a call from Ty.

You want to talk to the Office of Emergency Management for me?

Ty Warrell?

Why is he calling?

Hi, I am really sorry about last night. Tell me everything that you know.

About the audit?

Back up these barricades. Back them up.

If something bad is happening downtown, I need to know what you know.

Okay, after we talked, I checked 411, and their calls were up 90%. It's

affecting infrastructure, data, plumbing.

Has it buried fiber optics? I mean, how big of a nightmare is this? I mean,

there were callers from the 110 all the way to the L.A. River.

City Hall would be impacted.

Hang on a second. Park, listen to me.

I need you to walk the tunnels. You want me to do a tunnel survey now?

You want me to quote the handbook to you? Metro shall inspect the tracks to

assess any structural damage.

Sir, that's the policy after earthquakes.

Well, what's the policy when it's screaming?

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Sparks, let's go. Come on, we're going in. Yes, sir.

Sparks grabs a hard hat.

I'm sorry. What is that screaming?

The sinkhole.

Ty looks down into the sinkhole.

Wincing, Maddie moves the phone from her ear and looks at Josh.

Athena waits outside the closed jewelry store.

A man in a fedora arrives.

Detective Athena Grant, LAPD.

Are you the owner of this store?

Yeah, and I'm supposed to be on vacation.

Sorry to interrupt.

Me too.

He lifts the metal security shutter, then leads her inside.

So you want to tell me why you called me down here during my vacation?

I think you might have had a break-in.

We keep everything in the vault.

Industry standard.

You should check the vault.

I have an alarm system.

Yes, sir.

If somebody broke in, I would know. You would know. The entire neighborhood

would know. Just because the place looks empty doesn't mean anything's missing.

Not even this?

She hands him the engagement ring.

Where'd you get this?

Evidence and a crime.

Can you tell me who you sold it to?

I didn't. I put it in the vault.

He opens the vault, then covers his mouth in shock.

Athena looks in.

Yep.

Definitely been hit.

A ladder sticks up through a hole in the floor of the empty vault.

Athena moves closer and looks down the hole.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. This seems unwise.

Juries love evidence.

If I'm not back in ten minutes, call this number.

She writes it on a card.

Detective Jace Newell?

Tell him I couldn't take the W.

Athena climbs down the ladder into the hole.

Okay, this is our sinkhole.

This was the circumference on Thursday.

This was an hour ago, and this is our circumference now.

It's also admitting a mystery sound at about 1,500 hertz. We are going to need

a mandatory evacuation, 10 block perimeter from Second and Maple. That is

4,000 people.

Let's find a shelter that can hold more. We're also going to have to send out an

emergency alert to every cell phone in the downtown area.

Copy, but what does it say?

That is the question, isn't it? Near the sinkhole, the 118 arrives with the fire

truck.

What is that?

Sounds like a tea kettle. Sounds like the end of the world.

Hi, Robbie.

Check the street for ruptured gas lines. Everyone else, you're on evacuations.

Stair chairs for the non-ambulatory. Stern warnings for the unwilling.

Yeah, yeah, copy that.

Hey, Proby, you see all these people?

Panic is our enemy. Avoid panic.

Chimney approaches Ty and Dan.

Do you check the San Andreas?

Of course I check the San Andreas. You think I'm an idiot?

I'm not going to answer that question right now. So that's not an earthquake?

It's harmonic tremor. But I can't tell you what's causing it until I can get

down there and place seismometers. We can get you down there.

Captain Han, 118.

Good. Dan here doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground, which normally

would be fine. But the hole's not our issue.

Then what is?

We think it's something deep in a small tunnel.

Anybody down here?

LAPD?

Hmm.

Don't worry, sir. I've done this a thousand times.

Panty car.

How we looking?

Cap, there's no methane leaks, but you can have trace levels of sulfur dioxide.

Check out the flare.

Why is it getting hotter?

Eddie and Buck put a harness on Dan.

You good?

I'm usually more of a desk guy.

We're gonna lower you down nice and easy. Just lean back into it. Brace your

legs against the side.

Do you need any help?

Key is on this radio.

Hey!

We got you. Says the guy with two black eyes.

The ground shakes.

Ty steadies himself on a barricade.

In the tunnel, Athena stumbles against the wall.

She makes her way back toward the smaller tunnel.

Part of the ceiling collapses, and she falls to the floor.

The shop owner looks down into the hole.

A blast of steam shoots upward, knocking him down.

Get down!

Careful!

Buck, Eddie, and the others look around as the shaking stops.

He stopped.

That's good, right?

Honestly, I don't know. Is everybody okay?

Yeah, yeah, we're good.

All right!

Somebody get the mayor on the phone.

Everyone looks around.

The ground shakes and a massive cloud erupts from the sinkhole.

A chimney and the others stare in shock.

It's not a sinkhole.

It's a volcano.

Everybody take cover!

118 under the rig!

The team hurries under the fire truck.

Ty stares at the massive volcanic eruption, then trips over a case of

water and falls.

Lava spews up from the sinkhole.

A molten rock plummets directly at time.

Cut to black.
