And then he said, well, how do you know it's not appendicitis?
You didn't even do any tests.
And I said, because your appendix is on the other side.
[Aunt Amy laughs]
James, here, grab these.
James! Biscuits.
Right.
[Aunt Amy] Are you okay?
Yeah. I'm fine. Yeah.
Okay.
You sure? You seem a little preoccupied.
This wouldn't have anything to do with
a certain crop duster, would it?
Cody? No, no, of course it really has been,
it's been wonderful connecting with him.
It's okay to have mixed feelings, James.
Mixed feelings about what?
About the power of a flyboy to turn a girl's head.
Very funny.
Hey, anyone else getting their ear bent
about Dad's latest theory?
Oh, yeah.
The one where he strongly believes the Newmans are
responsible for the delay in the US Postal Service.
That's the one.
I heard he went down to the post office, talked to Gary.
The postmaster! Oh my goodness.
He said nothing's changed on our route.
Oh...
But maybe Gary's a double agent for the Newmans.
I say we question the mailman.
Or maybe we do a good old fashioned stakeout
at the end of the lane.
Okay. Come on.
In all fairness to your father, he's just...
He's just working through some frustrations
about not being able to utilize the new water source,
since he worked so hard to secure it.
Of course, it is frustrating to have to wait.
So I talked to some ranchers at the last association meeting,
and some of them have used an agistment.
A what now?
An agistment is when you rent the land
on another ranch's pasture.
How would that help?
Well, first of all, it's a legal way around all this red tape.
But we would get Tucker in the next county over to graze
our new cattle since they've got room left on their quota.
And then once our paperwork arrives,
we can mooove our cattle back over here.
I don't know, it feels a little risky to me.
Well, people do it all the time.
And honestly, I don't think I can keep your father away from
another cattle auction, so I think it's worth the risk.
Well, without risk, there's no reward.
Remember who said that?
Your mother.
[James] Yes she did.
Her birthday's coming up.
Yeah, I know.
Hey, I was thinking I'd love for us to find a way to honor her
in the cowboy church.
That would be wonderful.
I think I may have an idea.
Pastor.
Yes.
Mind if I join you?
Of course. Please.
Thanks.
My apologies for disturbing you, I just...
I was wondering if you had a moment to chat.
Not to worry.
What can I do for you?
Well, um, I used to serve in the Air Force.
Two tours.
Thank you for your service.
It was the honor of my life.
Then I came home, and, I don't know, I just...
I can imagine it's been a bit disorienting.
Yeah.
And it feels like I can't seem to find my coordinates.
I'm just lost and alone.
I see. What's your name?
Jared.
Jared. Well, can I let you in on a little secret?
You're not alone.
And I've actually spoken to a few people
who are going through some similar things.
Really?
Yeah.
What'd you tell them?
Well, I begin by reminding them that with faith and community,
they always have a home.
So why don't you tell me a little bit about yourself?
[Eric] Wow, I did not see that one coming.
His wife said no allergies to medication.
And it wasn't on his chart.
But it was in the computer system in the secondary.
I'm just glad we caught that before it became critical.
You and me both. I knew I should have triple checked.
No, that was not your fault, Eric.
You follow protocol.
I know, but sometimes you need to follow your instincts
instead of the rules.
It's hard to know when to toe the line and
when to think outside the box.
Mm mm.
Well, not for you, I mean.
It feels like the Alltime Health Net mandates
come second nature to you.
No, no.
Lately, I've been second guessing myself a lot,
trying to figure out which lines are necessary and
which ones are meant to be crossed.
Yeah, I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone.
You know, I've been overthinking like crazy.
Well, you shouldn't put that all in yourself.
It's important to talk about what's going on
and how you're feeling.
Yeah, yeah, maybe I, uh, maybe I just need to be more direct.
Hey, direct is good.
You might get a warmer response than you think.
[Maggie] Okay.
And did we remember to put in all the soup cans?
Check.
Great.
This is impressive.
We've almost got this food pantry up and running.
Yeah.
Oh. Have you seen the sign we made for the window yet?
-No. -Oh, great.
I will text Cody to bring it in from the back pantry.
Oh, I didn't realize Cody was here.
Yeah, he's building some shelving
just to help keep everything organized.
Had to have some place to keep all these boxes.
Well that's great. I love that everybody's pitching it.
It's nice, when you do things for the community,
you end up making a community.
And thank you again for your help
in putting together all the boxes.
Yeah, of course we're a team.
Hey, how about after this,
why don't we go grab some ice cream?
Kind of feels like a double scoop kind of day.
Well, you know, I'm always in the mood for some ice cream,
but, um, Cody already asked me to go with him.
Um, maybe we can all go together?
[footsteps approaching]
James. Good to see you, man.
Hey, Cody.
You wanted the sign?
Oh, yeah, to show James. We went with the cowboy theme.
Yeah, it was Maggie's idea,
but I added the "no one rides alone".
Me and the team used to see it in the service, so.
Well it's great. I absolutely love it.
Yeah. Thanks.
Well, if you got a minute, you want to grab that ice cream?
Yeah. Do you mind if James tags along?
Oh, no no no, no, you guys go.
Oh. Are you sure?
Yeah, yeah. Go have fun.
Okay. See you later.
Okay. I'll see you.
All right.
Oh, you look so good.
[Charlene] Nice.
[Charlene laughs]
I couldn't even tell you've never ridden Western before.
You're like a natural.
[Alexis] It still doesn't feel natural.
But, you know, I've only had one lesson with Daniel,
so I guess he was right.
It's not that different once you wrap your head around it.
[Charlene chuckles]
[Charlene] Hey, beauty.
This place is something else.
Yeah it is.
No, I mean, like, there's no big box stores,
no multiplexes, spotty wifi.
I just, I don't know what I'm supposed to do with all my time.
Well, I think getting back to riding horses is a good start.
Yeah, I know, I just, I really miss my friends.
Remind me again what you like to do with your friends
back in Houston.
Oh, you know, like, ride Lucky and go to Bible study
and get our toes done.
I know life's just so different here.
I'm not sure I fit in.
Oh, honey, I know how you feel.
When I went to college out of state, I didn't know a soul.
I felt so left out.
Really?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I stayed in my dorm. No one talked to me.
And then one night,
this girl named Annabelle knocked on my door and was like,
oh, a bunch of us are going to the Burger Fry.
You want to come with us?
I did not feel like a burger,
but I grabbed my jacket so fast.
It's just going to take some time, babe.
Yeah, I guess.
Hard to meet people, though.
You've been spending some time at the Feed and Seed.
Yeah. Yeah. Janie is so nice.
I just, you know, I wish I had something to do.
Like, all my friends that I met at school back in Houston,
they're all working at the barn this summer.
Well, you're definitely overqualified, but I did see
a posting for some part time help at the Feed and Seed.
I mean, if you're interested.
Are you kidding?
I'm definitely going to go see Janie.
You're going to go see Janie for what?
A job at the Feed and Seed.
-Really? -Yeah.
Okay, nothing is settled yet.
She hasn't even applied for the job.
Well, Janie's a pretty good judge of character,
so you might have a chance.
Yeah, I can put in a recommendation, if you like.
-You would? -Yeah.
Daniel, thank you so much.
Well, you got to earn it first, okay.
You got to help me clean the stalls.
And by help me, it means I'm going to show you,
and then you're going to do it.
Hahaha!
You're up.
[Daniel and Charlene laugh]
Great.
[Alexis] I knew that one was coming.
How you doing? Can I get you anything else?
Uh, no, no.
If I have another coffee, I won't sleep tonight, thanks.
Do you mind if I sit?
The lunch rush is over and my feet are really feeling it.
Oh, yeah. Please, please.
So, how are you settling into our lovely little town?
Uh, well, my daughter just applied for a job
at the Feed and Seed.
Ah.
I just, I guess I didn't understand the full extent
of what this visit was going to mean.
Everyone seems to be putting down stakes
deeper than I thought.
And normally I have my friends at church to talk to
when I'm feeling out of sorts, and I am...
I'm so sorry. I'm just rambling on.
No, ramble all you want.
I'm happy to be somebody you can talk to,
but there are also local churches to explore.
Yeah, yeah I know.
Daniel drives up to Cedar Rock
and Pastor Price is lovely, but
honestly, it's a bit of a jaunt.
I agree.
Look, I know the Newmans and the Hamiltons have their issues,
but when it comes to worship, James doesn't set boundaries.
I'm sorry. What are you saying?
James Hamilton runs a cowboy church out of the Red Oak Ranch.
And you would, of course, be welcome there anytime.
Daniel doesn't attend, but Jed does,
as do some of the other ranch hands.
You don't say?
Really? North Dakota in February?
Yeah. Minot base.
That must have been cold.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I got a story for you.
So, my buddy Bo from Georgia, him and I,
we were manning hangar 12, which is notorious for having
a faulty heating system.
So, sure enough, midnight comes around and the heat fails.
-Ah. -Yeah.
Well, we were stuck there for eight hours and below 12, trying
to make sure that the plane engines weren't freezing over.
Wow, that's the kind of mission that you don't
hear about in the news.
Yeah. Yeah, we talked about everything that night
to keep ourselves occupied.
Are you able to have anything like that out here?
Not really, I mean, keeping my faith helps, church community.
Sometimes I just feel like I can't relate to people.
I can imagine. Do you have any friends here?
Yeah, there's Nathan, we meet up some times.
And Scotty down at the mechanic's, you know Scotty.
Oh, yeah. Of course, of course.
I just didn't realize he was in the service.
No, he wasn't actually.
Honestly, I get it. It's not for everyone.
I understand. It takes a special kind of someone.
Yeah. I guess.
Daniel.
Jackson.
What are you up to?
Ordering supplies.
Oh, yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah, no. See?
No no no, no, I'm glad I caught you.
Look, we don't want to be placing a big order like this.
Okay, what are you talking about, exactly?
I'm talking about capital expenditures.
We can find a better price than this.
Look, just put a freeze on it.
I've been examining the books, I need to weigh in on all this.
Okay, well, all this is what keeps the ranch running, right?
So if I don't put an order for feed today,
well, next week we got a crisis on our hands.
With all due respect, Jackson, just leave me at it.
Yeah, I understand that you need to spend money to make money,
but the number one rule in business is that
you need to spend money wisely.
You also said to trust family so just trust what I'm doing.
Look, the point is that you needed to give me a minute
to get things straight around here so that we can
run this place as a team.
Okay, supply management is just part of
keeping the ranch alive, right?
This isn't personal, all right, it's business.
It's not like I'm throwing wads of money at new equipment
that isn't necessary.
something about a no till seeder.
That's a pretty penny.
Yeah, that machine also paid itself off the second
our yield stabilized.
Look, our soil value is increasing.
Soil values?
Okay, I did not come up here to listen to you wax poetic
about piles of dirt.
I need this land to make a profit.
Yeah, and I agree with that.
But if we keep squeezing this land,
it's not going to have anything to give back to us.
See, I'm thinking long term, and you're thinking...
No, no. Don't even pretend to know what I'm thinking.
You do not want to go in that direction.
Order your cattle feed, and anything else,
you have to run by me.
Great, I got a list. You want to go through it?
I can't right now.
I'm surprising Charlene with dinner
at the Copper Cactus Canteen.
Poor thing is missing her Tex-Mex.
Have a great dinner.
I've never seen so much tomato sauce in one place before.
Well, Andy said, you don't start a pantry with shelves,
you start it by listening.
So I've been doing a lot of listening.
A lot of spaghetti lovers, huh?
Yeah.
We got pasta, soups, canned chicken and tuna.
Just lots of ingredients for people to be able to
turn into hearty meals easily.
Oh, and shelf stable milk. That's a big one
Folks say they get a lot of cereal,
but nothing to pour over it.
Yeah, that makes sense.
What's what's this over here?
Oh, I thought it'd be a good idea to take some spices and
portion them out so people could enjoy.
So you're going to spice up everyone's life?
I hope so.
You know, I have a friend who's really looking forward
to the pantry opening.
His wife is working, but he's in between jobs right now,
so it's really hard to fill the food gap.
You know, what you're doing is really important, Maggie.
It's helping a lot of real people.
Thank you for saying that. It feels important.
I also don't hate that it's been
bringing James around a bit more.
I feel like things have gotten a little awkward between us.
Oh, really? How so?
Well, I have an old friend, Cody, who's been around lately.
But he's just a friend, that's all.
I'm just starting to wonder if James sees it that way though.
I thought maybe James and I were getting closer.
But lately I'm not really sure where I stand with him.
And what do you want?
I feel like James cares about you very much.
I thought so, too, but, I wish it wasn't so hard to tell.
Sometimes people need time to understand what they're feeling.
Well, if it makes you feel any better,
Lewis and I have had our fair share of weird tension.
You two? Really?
But you've always been two peas in a pod.
Well three now.
I mean, we are, but things ebb and flow.
You know how it is.
But faith keeps us on the right path.
Just like a North Star guiding us,
you know, lead with love and kindness.
Hmm.
I guess I just don't want to have to worry.
I wish things could be easy.
Oh, you don't need to worry.
I've seen the way James looks at you.
Talk to him, see where he stands.
Thanks.
So let us hold on to the hope that we profess.
For he, who promised, is faithful.
You know, I was speaking with one of our men in uniform
the other day, and he reminded me that sharing your burdens
isn't a luxury, it's a necessity.
You know, leaning on each other, it doesn't make us weak.
In fact, it does the opposite.
It shows that we're strong enough to be able to
support each other.
Camaraderie. Loyalty. Bravery.
These are all character traits that we admire in
our military and service members, isn't it?
But you don't have to wear a uniform to be an everyday hero.
So I invite everyone today, and for the rest of the week,
I invite you to incorporate these values into your life
and just see what happens may surprise you.
Which brings me to the food pantry.
Maggie, please.
We just wanted to thank everyone who has already donated
to the Round Up Food Pantry.
We're building up quite a supply.
So we would just like to encourage everyone to
please keep giving if you can.
We'll be making an announcement about opening day,
But in the meantime, if anyone has any questions or concerns,
just feel free to reach out.
Thank you.
All right, that wraps up today. Thank you everyone.
Please enjoy your Sunday and the rest of the week.
And God bless you.
Hi. I just wanted to thank you for a lovely sermon.
This is our first time here.
I'm really happy both of you are able to make it.
Thank you for coming.
It's always good to see people from the
other side of the fence.
You make it sound like we're in a superhero movie.
They came from the other side of the fence.
Uh, well, I didn't mean it like that.
I just mean it warms my heart when the teachings of the Lord
can break down the barriers between us.
Amen.
I hope to see you next week.
[Charlene] Yes, we'll be here.
Hey, Cody. Come here.
I want to introduce you to somebody.
Jared, this is Cody, two fellow airmen.
Great to meet you.
Yeah, likewise.
I'm going to let you guys get acquainted.
Not many fliers in Crossroad Springs?
Yeah, well, I spent most of my time
in the service space, but...
Hey, you were important to keeping things flying.
Yeah. You know, we took our job seriously.
I appreciate you.
You know, I was talking to James about getting some of the
veterans together at the church for some social time.
You want to come along?
Yeah?
There's quite a few of us in town.
You'd be surprised.
Maybe the VA will find a few more for us.
Yeah, I'd loved that. Yeah.
Great.
[Aunt Amy] Janet, can you come help me get Sunday roast ready!
Ooh, something smells good. Is that a roast?
It sure is.
And I made some of those little potatoes that you love.
Oh, bless you.
I've been so busy at the clinic,
I haven't had time to cook myself a decent meal.
Well, I'm sure after long hours of taking care of others,
it's hard to find the energy to take care of yourself.
I'm lucky if I have the energy to heat up soup.
Eric and I were talking about it today.
Power bar for breakfast
doesn't quite cut it for a whole shift, you know.
Well, maybe you two can start to cook for each other.
No, we're just friends. The clinic has a rule.
Ah huh.
It's fine. We're actually having a lot of fun together.
We never got the chance to be just friends.
Right, right. It's fine.
You know, in my experience,
rules don't make feelings disappear, Janet.
[Eric] Hello?
In here.
Is that Eric?
I invited him for dinner. I hope that's okay.
Oh, yeah. I would love to feed your friend.
Oh, I almost forgot what real food smells like.
Hi. Nice to see you.
Good to see you.
Can I get you some sweet tea?
Oh, I'd love it.
and to miss the service, but just...
But, you made it in time for a home cooked meal.
Oh, well, I was praying I would.
-Here you go. -Thank you.
[clink glasses]
Okay, oh, uh... Well, I am going to go get some
fresh herbs for the salad.
You know what? Let me give you a hand with that.
No, no, no, that's, that's very sweet of you.
I've got it.
You two just stay here and make yourselves comfortable.
[Jed] Amy! Hey!
Hold up.
Hey.
Hi.
Well, I don't know what you do, but you must have
one happy garden, by the looks of those beautiful greens.
Well, it's just finding its way.
You should wait until harvest time.
Then it really shows off.
Yeah I bet.
Where are you coming from?
Oh, I was just helping James clean up the cowboy church
after service.
Had a nice chat with him.
I really like his way with words.
You're lucky to have him in the family.
Yeah, he's a treasure.
Yeah.
Um, wondered if maybe you'd like to go for a stroll later,
you know, after you finished dinner?
Um...
Jed, you know, I appreciate our friendship very much.
So do I.
I just don't want to give you the wrong impression.
With everything that's going on between our two ranches,
I, I just don't see a way that we could be more than friends.
I see.
Can't trust the neighbors. Don't trust the staff, huh?
No, that's not it. That's not what I mean.
I know you're trustworthy.
It's just the family that you work for.
Look, I know I don't understand everything about this rivalry,
but if you could just really see Daniel, he's a good man.
Maybe so.
But he's not the only one running the business now.
Right.
I guess I just thought,
in the spirit of the pastor's words today,
that maybe you and I can be a bridge between the two ranches.
I'd like to think that's possible,
but I think that's a bridge too far.
It's always nice to see you, Jed.
Yeah, you too.
Oh, come on, I got it, I got it.
[James] No no no no no. You're our guests.
Do not get up. I'm getting the coffee.
Thank you, thank you.
Oh, your Aunt Amy's cooking reminds me of everything
that's good in the world.
Yeah a good meal will do that.
Hey, Janet told me about the food pantry you're starting up.
I'm sorry, but I just,
I haven't had time to buy anything to donate.
Well, no need to apologize.
You know, there are other ways to donate.
Every little bit helps.
Oh, you won't judge me if I opt for that?
Judgment is not exactly in my job description.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, I was actually hoping to talk to you about something.
Not as my pastor, but as someone who knows Janet well.
That I do. I'm all ears.
Yeah, yeah, it's just, it's the whole work situation.
You know, I feel like things have been getting,
I don't know, a bit complicated.
This wouldn't happen to be about
the new policies at work, would it?
Yeah. Yeah, you're right. It's, it's interesting.
You know, we're trying to make this whole
friendship thing work, and it is working.
But if I'm being honest with you, I mean,
it's not easy just being friends.
Well, Eric, if it's any consolation,
and I don't feel like this is oversharing,
it's not easy for her either.
[Daniel on phone] No, literally, I know Elsa.
No, he won't engage. He won't listen.
Okay, I will try again. Thanks.
[Alexis] Who won't listen?
Hey, Alexis. Hey.
Oh right. New job. That's right.
Yep.
[Daniel laughs]
Just this.
Is everything okay, Daniel?
Yeah. Yeah, I'm doing all right.
-Yeah? -Yeah. [laughs]
Hey, could you throw that on my tab, please?
Sure. No, you just, seem a little upset.
Oh, you know, that's just business sometimes.
So, how's the new job going?
Yeah, I like it. Yeah, Janie's the best.
She's been letting me do cash
and showing me how inventory works, so it's been great.
Okay, so you're enjoying the money part of it?
Oh, yeah. I cannot wait for my first paycheck.
I know, that's understandable. It's a good feeling.
Okay, well, you're already starting to think like a Newman.
[Daniel] I can see that.
You know my grandfather, he used to say to me all the time
he'd lean in and he'd go,
Son, if can make the money work,
you can make everything work.
He was not wrong. [laughs]
I'll keep that in mind.
Yeah. [laughs]
So, um, who were you talking about anyway?
I'm just kidding.
Uh, yes it was.
Look, I don't mean any disrespect or anything,
it's just, it's a little bit of an unusual situation.
You mean a whole side of your family just descending
on the ranch without any warning?
[Daniel laughs]
I'm glad you could see that.
No, it's been great meeting you guys,
okay but, you know, your dad left when I was little
and my dad never really talked about him, so.
Truth be told, I just don't know.
So he never came back even for, like, holidays and stuff?
No. Not ever.
All right.
Is Janie here? I'm picking up a package.
For Janet.
A plaque? Did you win something?
No. It's a dedication to my mom.
We're going to put it up in the prayer barn to honor her.
Got it all wrapped up for you.
Thanks.
That's really thoughtful.
All right. I'll see you at home.
Janet, good to see you.
Yeah, see you at home.
Home?
Oh, yeah, I'm Daniel's cousin.
Oh, well, that makes us neighbors, then.
I'm Janet Hamilton.
Hamilton, yes.
I'm Alexis. Nice to meet you.
It's so nice to meet you.
Yeah, I'll just, I'll get this rung up then.
Thanks.
[breathes heavily]
You okay?
Oh Eric.
Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.
No. It's okay. I'm just, uh...
I'm trying to wrap my head around this new charting system
Alltime Health sent over.
I was supposed to give my opinion on it, um,
three days ago.
Mhm.
Last rounds?
I just finished.
Thinking of heading home, but if you need me to stay.
No, no no no. Go home.
You sure?
Yeah. I need well-rested professionals around here, so.
I will try that for a change.
Um, there's just one other thing.
What's that?
So I've been thinking about the whole no dating policy.
Yeah, me too.
So I combed through the guidelines again,
and the ultimate discretion is left up to
the individual administration of each center.
Really?
Yeah.
Okay.
Uh, well, in that case, you let me know what you decide.
Will, do.
Good night.
Don't work too hard.
Night, Eric.
[James] There.
[Janet] It's perfect.
[Willis] Well, now she's here with us.
I can feel her.
Well, to me, she was beauty personified.
So, I was thinking about starting a photo wall in here.
What do you think?
Can I see that?
Wow.
So carefree.
Well, that was her spirit, all right.
I wish we had more time with her.
I remember standing beside your mother
at your crib one day, James.
And we were looking down at your little face
and she turns to me and she said,
now I understand how love works.
She loved you both so much.
Dad, that's so lovely.
Remember that riddle she used to tell us?
What's the only thing
that doesn't get smaller when you share it?
Love.
Would you mind if I said a little prayer for her?
I think we'd all love that.
Lord,
thank You for the seeds that Marianne planted
in our hearts long ago.
May You continue to keep her close to James and Janet,
who love her and miss her dearly.
And to my brother Willis, the love of her life.
For all of those who have loved her,
please let us feel her continued presence.
Help us to share, as she did with grace and abundance,
and give us a well of love that never dries up,
no matter how much we drink from it.
Lord, let this plaque be a reminder of her love
and how truly special this woman was.
Amen.
Amen.
[Janet] Happy birthday, Mom.
[James] Happy birthday, Mom.
Happy birthday, my love.
[James] Hey, Daniel.
Pastor, how can I help you today?
It was great to see Charlene at service last Sunday.
It's nice that we can all be neighborly
in the house of the Lord.
Yeah, she's great. I'm glad she could make it.
It was a shame we didn't see Jackson there.
What are you implying?
Nothing.
I just want to check in on you, see how you're doing.
You looked a little blindsided when they arrived.
Well, Newmans have always run this ranch together, united.
You know, maybe you should just stick to what's happening
on Hamilton property.
Like your crops. How are they doing?
The crops are doing just fine, thanks.
That's good. Yeah, Cody came by, sprayed ours.
Haven't seen any larvae since.
You know, he also mentioned he took Maggie up for a plane ride.
That must have been cool.
It was good to see you, Pastor.
[James] Right this way.
Go ahead grab a seat.
All right. It looks like we're all here.
So first off, thank you for joining us.
It really is an honor to meet some of the service members
in our community.
Some familiar faces and some new faces.
Now, this all started out of a few conversations
that I had with Cody and Jared.
So thank you guys for making this possible.
We were talking about what it's like to come home after serving
and that it's not always easy.
And we couldn't help but wonder if maybe there were other
members in the community that might be feeling the same way.
So we decided to put together a little something,
hopefully the first of many.
Pancake lunch!
Thank you Amy.
You're welcome and thank you all for your service.
This looks delicious.
I hope so. Enjoy.
Please don't be shy. Dive in.
Hey, there you are.
Hey, kid, Daniel.
Mind if I join you?
No, no. Suit yourself.
Look, I've been thinking...
Uh oh. Yeah, that always gets me in trouble.
Look, maybe I've been too focused on my own opinion.
There's a chance I maybe overreacted a little.
Huh. I like where this is headed.
Look, if you put yourself in my shoes, okay,
I built my life around this place ever since
my dad passed away.
So you can see how I would have this
sense of ownership or autonomy.
And when I put myself in your shoes,
well, I realize that we do have some common ground.
You're family.
The only family I have left.
So I'm going to hit the reset button,
and I'm going to take a step back.
And...
I'm just going to do my best to ask for your opinion
from time to time.
Hmm.
Well, this is an interesting turn.
And I'm happy to hear that you've come to your senses.
I am your family, and I should be treated with some respect.
Here's the thing, though.
You're definitely your daddy's son, but I'm his brother.
And that puts me higher on the family food chain.
You told me in my office that we could be a team, so.
Now what I see is a man trying to butter me up
to see things his way.
But that's not what's going to happen.
I've got my way forward and it's the better way.
It's the best way, period.
As soon as my plan is finalized,
you'll be the third to know.
Third to know, huh?
Yeah. Behind Charlene and Alexis.
So nothing I've said makes any difference to you?
What? Stepping into my shoes stuff?
Please.
You could never fill my snakeskin boots.
Snake, all right.
Maggie.
Excited for you to try this.
It's a new recipe I've been playing with.
It's got mint in it.
Oh, how lovely.
You deserve a break.
You do too.
Oh. How did the veterans lunch go?
Great.
It was really, really fun. We had a lot of laughs.
They shared some great stories. Really connected.
Wow.
I actually think we're all good for right now.
Maybe we could just sit for a bit.
Uh, yeah. Sure. Yeah.
So how do you like it?
Oh, it's perfect.
Um, I was thinking maybe we could go check out
that new restaurant in Cedar Rock this weekend.
-[phone buzzes] -Sorry, hang on.
[James] Um...
Yeah, ah...
Yeah, you know what? That sounds great.
How about in a couple of weeks?
Um...
Look, I know we spent a lot of time together
between the pantry and church, but...
James, I'm asking if you want to go to dinner with me,
away from all that.
Not in a couple weeks.
Um...
I'm sorry. I'm just getting my bearings.
I guess I just thought we were headed towards something
more serious.
Uh...
So did I. But I'm not in the place I need to be.
You mean a lot to me, Maggie.
I just...
It's okay.
Um, I should, I should get back.
Wait. Maggie. Maggie, please.
Hang on, Maggie.
[Maggie sobs]
