Previously on Babylon Berlin:

An attack on the Reich Chancellor? But you can't kill a politician!

We can.

This is murder.

-Charlotte. -Don't you dare!

Farewell.

If you use it indoors, you only need a constant draft.

For Göring's operation, we'd need large amounts of this... tincture.

As you can see, we've made provisions.

So when does the show start?

We need to go in.

Set on fire from the inside.

This is the guy I told you about.

Has poor eyesight, speaks German poorly.

Well, then, come with me.

-Tonight. -Where?

The Nyssen family estate.

The leading figures from the business world and high finance,

the highest-ranking Nazis, and the Reich Chancellor are meeting there tonight.

You are our outpost.

According to the plan, Hitler will arrive last.

His seat in the hall

is directly across from the host, Alfred Nyssen.

Between them is a recess in the parquet floor.

That's where we'll place the bomb.

One last little thing just occurred to me.

We'll change the seating plan.

Him...

we'll put here.

On your seat, Mother.

What do we do now?

Hey there!

Where to?

In.

Come here!

S.A., I see.

-What do you want here? -Deliver something.

Not today. Everything's closed. It's after hours.

We need to go over there.

Attach it here.

Mr. Jacoby! Good evening.

Mr. Nyssen, we can begin.

Yes, of course, but let's let our guest of honor have just one more sip.

But he doesn't drink alcohol.

Exactly.

He has to turn someone down every three minutes.

Alfred, please.

-That show-off... -No, thank you.

My lady, your drink has stopped bubbling. Let me get you a fresh glass.

Please restrain yourself.

Trust me.

Long live our new Reich Chancellor, Adolf Hitler.

Three cheers for him!

Cheers!

Cheers!

Charlotte!

There!

Guard!

CID. Someone just climbed in there.

-Where? -Up there!

Oh, God.

Call the fire brigade, the Unter den Linden station. Quick!

Come on!

That's why we are here...

Ten more minutes.

Beloved Helga, distinguished guests,

and last but not least, dear Mr. Hitler.

It was almost a month ago

that we elected you as chairman of the German Reich AG.

Please let me introduce, from left to right:

Günther Quandt, Friedrich Flick, Carl Bosch,

Alfred Krupp, Ferdinand Porsche, Karl Merck,

Wilhelm von Opel, Hermann von Siemens,

Franz von Papen and Alfred Hugenberg.

Yes. I know all of you, gentlemen.

I also thought I didn't need

to introduce the board of directors of this company to you, but...

does the dog remember the hand that feeds him?

What did you say, Nyssen?

Well, what did I say?

I'm talking about my ten-point plan,

which I had sent to you to help with your election campaign.

Point one: Economic policy.

It should be, and will be, guided by the state.

The state determines what the nation needs, and the economy,

all of us here will deliver.

You'll see that it's not entirely wrong when placing your orders...

Helga?

Come, let me take you outside.

Helga?

I'm sure she'll feel better in a minute.

Where was I? Right.

Economic policy.

It should be national, but...

Wegener, what are you doing?

Excuse me, my lady, we need to go this way.

-Here. Quickly. -Come on.

Where are you taking her?

It's not entirely wrong...

What's the matter? What are you waiting for?

The connection must be broken.

What?

Damn!

The time fuse?

Go on.

What happened?

Gereon?

-We need to go back in. -What?

-Yes. -Gereon, what are you doing here?

What are you planning?

-My lady... -Let go of me!

-My lady, please, you need to... -No!

-Mrs. Nyssen! -No! No, Gereon! No!

-Mrs. Nyssen... -Alfred!

-That's enough! -No! Alfred!

-Please come with me. -No! Alfred! Alfred!

-You, your jacket. Quickly. -Gentlemen, the white wine.

Point six, one of the most important ones.

And if I may add,

one of the issues that is personally most important to me

is self-sufficiency.

One moment, please. I'm not done yet.

We believe it is necessary that the food supply for our people

be secured within our own borders.

Well, it's actually a good moment now, isn't it?

Now let's move on to what you're probably all most interested in:

arms.

-Be careful! -Begging your pardon.

Oops.

As you know, my engineers have been developing

various types of rockets for a while now.

Especially when it comes to the topic of colonization,

we should use this technology.

Keep in mind that from space,

we can reach any point on earth in a matter of seconds.

Any point, any country, and any continent.

The combination of military weapons and technological progress

will lead Germany in a very short time to the top of the world.

Nyssen AG stands ready,

ready at any time and anywhere to unleash the forces of nature

to subdue the enemy and gravity.

Bravo!

Let's get out of here, quickly!

Stop! You can't go any further. There's a fire!

We need to go through.

Not now.

This can go off any moment.

Who are they?

What's in the canisters?

Get lost!

That was no fire brigade.

Let's split up. You go upstairs, I'll take this floor. Okay?

Yes.

Will the Germany that we have reimagined in this circle actually become a reality?

Alfred Krupp will become Minister of Economic Affairs.

That said, the Ministry of Defense is probably best off in my hands,

as I have already explained in point six.

Well, this brings me right to... to point nine.

I sincerely apologize,

but we are currently facing an extraordinary situation here.

The Reich Chancellor and the President of the Reichstag

are urgently needed in the city.

Perhaps we should continue our consultation at another time.

Out!

Everybody get out!

Get out!

Outrageous!

What a pathetic little worm.

The stronger your will to greatness,

the more obvious your destiny of utter insignificance.

You're nothing,

a childish wannabe,

-a pathetic nobody. -Quiet, Mother.

I won't let you tell me to be quiet.

What are you doing?

Do you hear this?

Something's ticking.

Nonsense. You're off.

Off your rocker.

There is something.

It's a bomb!

An explosive charge, no doubt about it!

You have to... defuse it, son!

It'll explode in less than a minute.

We need to get out of here. Let's go!

Come with me now!

-No. -You'll do as I say!

No!

You go.

Come with me.

-What? -Come with me.

I beg you.

You beg me?

Yes, earnestly.

Leave this room.

You just want to keep me in this world as long as you can.

So you won't have to run into me in the afterlife.

I implore you.

My dear boy, my dear...

My dear, dear boy, I...

I love you so much.

Please.

It's okay, Mother.

We'll go together.

The two of us.

Mr. Jacoby?

Did you forget something?

What are you doing? Open the door!

Hands up!

Freeze!

There will be consequences. You're aware of that, yes?

-Mr. Jacoby. -Przybylski!

Przybylski, please open the door!

-Why are you still here? -Przybylski!

Open the door!

Do you trust me?

Yes.

What's your plan?

Citizens of the German Reich.

In a few days, you will elect a new parliament.

Who you vote for...

that's your decision.

The people are the sovereign of a country and no one else.

Any political force

that opposes this principle must be stopped.

Today we have stood up

against the misguided path of the "Führer principle."

Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler is dead.

He and his followers have forced us into this act of violence.

For the alliance of fascism and capital has only one goal.

War.

In war, people lose their souls,

their compassion.

The love of nature and the world.

What remains is a ghost,

broken in body and spirit.

We...

we ourselves are these ghosts.

We...

the former comrades, the ghosts of war.

Today, we killed one of our own.

It was our last service for this country.

Even 100 years from now, people will be amazed

at what we have accomplished in these few years after the war.

The achievements of science and medicine, of psychology and pharmacology,

of film and literature, women's rights,

the freedom of the arts and the press, free speech and constructive debate,

and, last but not least, the unwavering stance against war.

Hate,

envy,

violence,

all of this arises solely from the oppressive nature

of authoritarianism.

Our action will prevent the German people

from degenerating into human machines,

devoid of feeling, forgiveness, and love.

BROADCASTING HOUSE

We are not machines.

We are just the broken robots of the last war.

And now we step back into the darkness.

Open up!

Unlock the door!

What is going on?

But by doing this, we have made room

for what is new and free in Germany,

for what is open and vast in the world.

It is now up to you

to lead the German people forward on their path.

Choose it...

in the name of humanity.

Potocnik, do something.

In the name of dignity

and in the name of freedom.

Get out!

I'm ending this!

Police, drop it immediately!

Douse it, damn it!

Everybody out, right now!

You too, snip!

Charlotte!

-Come on, out. -Let's go.

-Gereon, don't do it! -Let me go!

Out!

Anno, come on! He's alive.

Hitler! He survived!

We need to go!

Anno!

There! Over there! Come!

Gereon?

Gereon.

Gereon!

Breathe calmly.

In...

and out.

Let your thoughts go.

And breathe deeply.

In...

and out.

I will guide you.

Step by step.

Step...

by step.

Until...

the end.

Gereon!

Ladies and gentlemen,

we apologize for the false report that was published recently.

Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler is safe and sound.

However, we have received word that the Reichstag is on fire.

Communist agitators have started a fire,

thereby making their contempt for the German people unmistakably clear.

-Arrest them! -Our Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler

calls on the German people to achieve the greatest possible unity.

Don't let any of these arsonists

or the communists behind them get away.

They want to destroy our state

and subjugate our country to the Soviets.

Let us hunt them to the very last corner, to the end of the earth.

Don't let any of them get away.

Tonight they showed us their true colors.

Hans Litten,

arrested the very night of the Reichstag fire.

As a staunch opponent of Hitler,

Hans Litten was tortured in various concentration camps

until he took his own life on February 5, 1938, at the Dachau concentration camp

to avoid further interrogation.

Marinus van der Lubbe.

In December 1933,

on the basis of a law enacted retroactively,

he was sentenced to death.

For high treason in connection with arson.

On January 10, 1934, he was executed by the guillotine.

Even under the Nazis, Ernst Gennat remained head of the homicide department

and was promoted in 1935 to the rank of Government and Criminal Affairs Councilor.

He died in August 1939 in Berlin.

Rosa Helfers.

In 1933, she was dismissed from all her positions.

Starting in 1935, she was under surveillance by the Gestapo.

In 1944, she was arrested

and interned at the Buchholz Labor Education Camp,

where her health was permanently damaged.

Starting in 1945, she played a crucial role in rebuilding the SPD.

Ernst Thälmann, leader of the Communist Party of Germany,

was arrested on March 3, 1933.

In August 1944, after more than 11 years in solitary confinement,

he was shot, presumably on the direct orders of Adolf Hitler.

Otto Wels, party leader of the SPD.

Under his leadership,

the Social Democrats were the only party to vote unanimously on March 23, 1933,

against Hitler's Enabling Act,

upon which the National Socialist dictatorship was based.

Otto Wels died in exile in Paris, two weeks after Hitler's invasion of Poland.

Immediately after the Reichstag fire,

all fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution were suspended.

Newspapers that did not conform to the NS line

were systematically banned, and journalists were persecuted.

One of the most high-profile victims was Karl von Ossietzky.

The future Nobel Peace Prize laureate died after five years in prison

as a result of abuse.

In the no longer free elections on March 5,

the NSDAP did make gains,

but did not secure the absolute majority it had hoped for.

It was the last election held in Germany until 1948.

In early July 1934,

Hitler had numerous opponents within the party murdered

in the wake of the so-called Röhm Putsch.

These events, which propaganda also referred to

as the Night of the Long Knives,

also claimed as victims the former Reich Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher

and his wife Elisabeth.

Rudolf Diels, founder of the Gestapo,

handed his post to Heinrich Himmler in 1934

and subsequently became district president in Cologne.

In 1957 he died in a hunting accident.

We'll wait outside.

Dr. Edmund Forster returned to Germany after his trip to Paris.

On August 31, 1933,

he was suspended from duty

for alleged remarks against National Socialism.

He committed suicide a few days later.

Ernst Weiss based his last novel, The Eyewitness,

on his notes and conversations with Dr. Forster.

After German troops entered the city,

he slit his wrists at his hotel in Paris in 1940.

For the German economic elite,

their support for the National Socialists had fully paid off.

Not least through the massive use of forced laborers,

they were able to increase their personal fortunes

and prove themselves to be compliant enforcers for the terrorist state.

Hardly any of them were held accountable for this after the war.

GERMAN-SWISS BORDER MARCH 1933

Charlotte.

It's bad enough when the air over the country becomes toxic and smoky.

But to a certain extent, you can keep that air out.

You can close your windows tightly

and retreat within the four walls of a secluded private life.

You can shut yourself off,

put flowers in your room,

and cover your ears and nose when you're out on the street.

It's very tempting to do that, even for me.

My brother said that in 100 years,

people will look back on us and our time and marvel at just how far we had come.

That we had tried so many new and good things.

And how much we had failed.

Maybe.

But what people everywhere now call the Thousand-Year Reich

will make all of that a thing of the past.

Until we, too, forget what we had once been.

But there is one thing I know...

that I will never forget what you meant to me.

That's how I think of you today and tomorrow.

And I already miss you more than anything else in my life.

Your smile,

your eyes,

your radiance.

Even the city has turned gray for me without you.

The city of Berlin

that you showed me.

Where we were happy for a while.

The city that doesn't exist anymore.

Our Berlin.

To ashes, to dust

Stolen from the light

But not quite yet

Miracles wait until the end

Ocean of time

Eternal law

To ashes, to dust

To ashes

But not quite yet

To ashes, to dust

Stolen from the light

But not quite yet

Miracles wait until the end

THE END

It's just a dream after all

Just chasing the wind

Who knows for sure?

The clock on your wall

It is filled with sand

Put your hand in mine

And let's be eternal

You make your choice now

You throw us In between happiness and agony

But I can forgive you

You're so close to death

But your gaze is clear

Recognize me, I'm ready

And I'm searching for immortality with you

It's just a dream after all

Just chasing the wind

Who knows for sure?

The clock on your wall

It is filled with sand

Put your hand in mine

And let's be eternal

You make your choice now

You throw us In between happiness and agony

But I can forgive you

You're so close to death

But your gaze is clear

Recognize me, I'm ready

And I'm searching for immortality with you
