Like every country has its own history
Every village has its own history and tradition
Even the village of Mahishapuram we are going to see now has a similar story
Once upon a time for group of shepards..
they came across an idol of Goddess Mareamma
and considered as boon and pure form of deity
and worshipped her as the Goddess of the village, After a 10 years..
Due to severe flooding and relentless rainfall..
many homes and lands were destroyed..
while the bodies of both people and animals lay scattered across
With no idea how to stop the disaster..
the villagers began offering..
hens and other sacrifices to the Goddess in name of Bonalu
Yet the floods continued without mercy!
Sutthari Ellayya, an ancient sage..
arrived with his buffalo and made an offering to the Goddess.
To everyone’s astonishment, the rains ceased and the floodwaters began to recede
The villagers, overwhelmed with devotion, started praying to Goddess!
Witnessing this miracle, Ontikannu Swami..
established a tradition..
that every 10 years, a fair should be held
in the village in honour of Goddess Maremma!
By writing this tradition on a stone which was agreed by whole village
Aligned to it, and conduct Goddess Mareamma festival
As per the festival, and tradition, Ellayya is going to offer buffalo
[bellows]
[bellows]
Everything that happened during this fair was good..
except for the idols of the Goddess breaking apart.
Hmm.
It would be better to ask that Ontikannu Swami about this situation.
Alright then, come on, let’s go.
Sir.
Despite a few small mishaps, the day has been auspicious
The goddess remained calm..
and a favourable time has begun.
Starting from day, before the 3rd Full moon..
A male buffalo gonna take birth!
And we must offer that buffalo to the goddess.
Alright, sir.
Hmm.
ON 3RD FULL-MOON DAY
There is only one day left until the full moon..
yet the calf has still not been born
Ellipsis coming down
we have only recently conducted the festival.
Please have mercy upon us.
MAHISHAPURAM
Hey, A buffalo was born to Narsayya's cattle, come on!
Boiled rice isn’t there…
No one comes even to look
We don’t have the fortune to offer you the fair, O Mother Māremma
The lamp refuses to stay lit… -Goddess Mareamma
Life itself won’t hold on
We don’t know where the fault lies, But the curse keeps punishing us, O Māremma
The shade is collapsing, The body is withering away
Misery has wrapped around us, Give us a supporting hand, O Māremma
Even you got a female buffalo, forget about village's growth!
Boiled rice isn’t there…
no one comes even to look
We don’t have the fortune to offer you the fair, O Mother Māremma
Brother, heard you got a calf, right?
Is he a male? -Female one! Come on!
What a shame for our village.
Bloody hell
What mistake have we committed? Why are all the buffaloes dying?
What has happened here? Look at this. The buffalo's dead
What happened?
What, have you been drinking again? What is wrong with you?
Come on, get up. Let’s go home.
We somehow managed to get a calf, but it died again.
All the calves are dying in the womb itself. This will lead to devastation.
The stream is overflowing
Who is it that’s breaking apart?
This struggle is only to survive..
Before courage rises in Maisapur,
Fear surrounds and traps us.! To break these chains..
We don’t have enough strength! Swearing upon the breath still left in us..
We promise to repay the debt For the horrors that have happened
For the wrongs committed unknowingly, Mother, don’t hold it against us!
Boiled rice isn’t there…
no one comes even to look
'And so, this is being announced to all the villagers..'
'It's been chaos all over village, all the buffaloes are dying'
'Tomorrow, we must conduct the fair and festival for the goddess.'
Give us horns sharp enough to strike back
Against the cruel ones who crush everything down
Give us a roar that can shake the oppressors
Even if we are pushed into the mud and tied down
Give us hooves that will help us stand again!
MAREMMA!
We finally got a male calf, but it is on the verge of dying.
Nothing will happen.
Goddess Mareamma..
We must feed the calf nutritious food..
as it will help it grow stronger.
Yes -You truly have great faith, man.
You only touched the buffalo, and now it looks perfectly healthy
There is something blessed in your hands, Karni!
Anyways..
Yellayya is going to take care of this calf, isn’t he?
Once the milk has been boiled, give it only to Yellayya!
Okay, brother.
Come, son.
AFTER 3 MONTHS
Maari..
Maari..
Maari..
Yellayya -Sir..
There is nothing more to say about the way you care for calves and buffaloes.
You can even sense the rhythm of their breathing.
It is meant for the goddess, isn’t it?
Take proper care of it. -Okay, sir
Here. Take this.
What?
What? Did he give you the same amount again?
What is the harm in asking for more money?
You do not understand anything.
You only accept whatever he offers.
If I say anything more, you scold me back -But why?
Do you have plans of making your son as Collector?
For shepherds like us, this is more than enough.
Eat and head to sleep
We need to conduct prayers for buffalo tomorrow
Be careful, Karni
Maari..
Hey, Mari!
You’re kinder than all those people, Maari
We have our own path..
our own hills and corners! This land is our inheritance!
The fields are ours..
The lakes are ours..
With the sky above us as a blanket, And the doorstep as our bed..
You are like my little brother, aren’t you?
Come, Maari, Maari come!
Before the school bell hit..
wake me up with your neck bell
I'll be the teacher, I'll teach you many!
Even if your are mute, you're my friend, I'll teach you many lessons
With the sky above us as a blanket, And the doorstep as our bed
You are like my little brother, aren’t you?
Come, Maari, Maari come, You’re kinder than all those fake friends, Maari
These hills and valleys are our inheritance!
'We warmly welcome all the elders who have came here to grace this Kabaddi tournament'
'organised by the Warangal Kabaddi Committee at our Mahishapuram!'
'We also extend a hearty welcome to all the spectators present here today!'
'Our neighbouring village, Ramapuram, is competing against us in this Kabaddi match'
It seems the youngsters from our village are playing exceptionally well.
Hey old man, have any calves been born in your village lately?
No, nothing of the sort.
When a Kabaddi match is going on, do we really need to discuss this now?
He became annoyed just because I asked him.
What has happened to Karni? Why is he playing like that?
The entire ground is roaring with his name.
Bloody hell, he is charging into the boundary like a wild bull!
and we are getting out like helpless children.
Are you here to play the game or simply praise him?
Hey Uttam!
Listen, be thankful we did not end up facing Karni and his team.
If we had, we would have been completely humiliated.
We must play according to the rules.
Even if we have to bend the rules
we must win at any cost. Come on.
What do you mean by bending the rules?
If Karni enters even once, he will wipe everyone out.
How are we supposed to stop him?
Move aside.
Look there.
Even the Mahishapuram team has arrived now.
The game is about to become intense.
Look, that is my brother-in-law.
Good heavens, what a magnificent buffalo that is.
If I breed that buffalo with four female buffaloes
I will make a fortune. I will become rich.
Look at you.
Look how you're blushing just by seeing your brother-in-law
Heads or tails?
Heads.
'The match has begun.'
'Karna is entering the boundary.'
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
'That's how the game has to be!'
'Ramapuram team witnessed the stars in the daylight!'
'We sincerely welcome our village head, Mr Dharma..'
'to this function, and we request everyone to greet him with a round of applause!'
'Now the Ramapuram team captain, Uttam, is entering the boundary'
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
'At last, Uttam proved himself worthy as captain!'
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
Hey, get in there.
'Raju, another player from Mahishapuram, is stepping into the section now'
'He is always chanting over-toots all time!'
'Let us see what he does now.'
[Kabbaddi, reciting]
'Oh my God, he has scored a point. He is a talented player indeed'
[Kabbaddi, recites]
Court change.
Half the match has now been completed
and the teams are switching sides.
At present, Mahishapuram is leading comfortably on points.
Hey you! Move away! Stop it!
[Kabbaddi, recites]
[Kabbaddi, recites]
[Kabbaddi, recites]
[Kabbaddi, recites]
-[overlaps] A fight has broken out..
and the referee has stepped in to calm everyone down.
-Everyone, hold hands tightly.
The moment he comes in, we will all jump on him together.
[Kabbaddi, recites]
[Kabbaddi, recites]
Now Uttam is entering the boundary.
Did he touch them? Did he score a point?
I touched you. [overlaps]
[overlaps] I touched you.
[overlaps]This is wrong.
This is cheating. This is not fair. This is an unfair game.
It's an out!
Maari, gave him a blow, man!
Hey, move away!
What?
Nothing, brother-in-law
What is it, Karni?
Were you able to win the cup this time?
Yes, the cup is going to be ours.
What about your results?
They will be announced in three days.
I am waiting for them.
Drat!
I feel more humiliated..
by what that buffalo did than by losing the match itself.
I want to see the end of that buffalo. I must bring it down.
I feel like going and killing it right now.
Hey, he remained calm only because of the rules.
Otherwise, just imagine what would have happened to you.
And as for the buffalo..
it does not understand any rules. -Uncle..
I feel utterly humiliated in your village. What is the point of me even staying here?
Hold on.
To truly win against something, you are not supposed to merely beat it
you must defeat it completely.
I have noticed the way you keep staring at that girl.
Those are the sensitive points you must strike.
And regarding the buffalo..
if anything happens to it, the entire village will kill you on the spot!
Someone tried it before.
Besides, that buffalo is soon to be offered to the goddess.
No one would dare to go near it!
because she is our goddess.
And he is trying to gain leadership in the village through that Goddess
Even I'm furious, yet I'm patiently waiting for the right time to bring him down!
You wait and watch as well.
Our time will come
and when it does, we will bring every one of them down.
Greetings, brother.
Mahendra brother, Purushottam is here.
Namaste, Purushotham.
Namaste, Mahendra brother.
How are you? -Yes, all is well.
You're making this celebration grand since you're finally becoming a grandfather?
Yes, after seven years, I am finally going to have a grandson.
And what about the elections?
That is exactly what I wanted to discuss.
If all of you support me..
this time as well, the district council seat will remain ours.
Come on, Mahendra brother. It is not for us to decide whom to vote for.
We will simply follow your word. We are all with you.
Where is your son, Jalandhar?
Look, he is about to offer the goat.
[bellows]
Good heavens, Jalandhar.
That strike was massive.
I felt my heart stop for a moment.
Forget about me offering the goat.
That one..
I want to land a deadly blow on that buffalo raised by the Mahishapuram villagers
I want its carcass to be fed to birds and snakes.
That village must be disgraced. Only then will I find peace.
Jalandhar..
It is considered the embodiment of Goddess Maramma.
They believe she..
satisfies hunger
and destroys enemies.
Why are you so obsessed with it? Let it go.
If you had been humiliated in that village
you would understand this pain.
I am prepared to kill anyone if that is what it takes!
I will achieve my aim.
I simply have not found the right moment yet.
So, are you planning to destroy all of us just for your personal revenge?
It seems the very cat we raised has turned against us.
This is not about who dies.
The only thing that matters is whether I kill that buffalo or not.
That is all that matters. Period.
His arrogance has not faded, even after spending years in prison.
Instead of speaking to me directly, you are behaving like a coward!
Hey Purushottam, wait. -Why he's leaving?
Let's leave from here -Purushottam
Tell me. Come on, let us talk. Why are you leaving like this?
You are not going to win even a single vote. I will see how you manage to win
Hey, Purushottam! What are you doing here?
Brother!
If you are willing to hear me out, I have something important to say.
So, you also started lectures now?
I wanted to discuss something regarding the buffalo.
There's a small place nearby forest
There is a woman named Bholachamma..
If we approach her, we can get the buffalo killed.
Do we need to eat this daily?
Can you not prepare something different for once?
Mother, sister can't able to eat this
Eat for today, dear.
I will go to work tomorrow, won’t I?
If I manage to find something there, I will cook something better tomorrow.
Okay. Eat.
Mom! Huh?
Huh?
Oh God!
Look at him, he has become so weak.
And look at my husband, he does not work at all.
He starts drinking alcohol from the morning itself.
There is not even food to eat at home,
yet this fool somehow always finds money for alcohol.
Whatever little money I manage to save, he steals and wastes on drink.
Hey Maari!
Want some alcohol? Come!
Come on then.
Huh? Huh?
What a strike that was, Maari!
Oh God! Oh no! She has ruined everything after getting drunk.
What is this, son? Bloody hell! Ouch!
Oh God!
Look, Dharma brother, what Maari has done.
She has destroyed my shop.
After all these years..
someone has finally done it.
Shut down this alcohol shop of yours, man
Otherwise many more families will be destroyed.
Can you not live without alcohol?
If the goddess becomes angry, you will end up on the streets
and this entire village will turn into a graveyard. Do you understand?
You drunken fool, come on, get up!
You practically live and die in this liquor shop. Move along now.
Not only humans, even the buffalo has started teaching lessons now.
It is destroying all my hard work.
Sir..
Give me a good quote
I do not want any mistakes in the vein.
What?
Goddess, at last you have come into our home after so many years. Please, come in!
Maari, Maari!
Hey, do not stop it.
The goddess has entered this buffalo, that is why it is behaving like this.
Maari..
Maari!
Brother, you may leave now.
We are not going to sell any of it at any cost.
All the grains touched by Maari, we will eat these for the whole year
You can leave now!
You are supposed to go, aren’t you? Why are you still with buffalo having books?
What is so strange about that?
We would not survive without these buffaloes.
And without this life, I would never have had the chance to study either.
You always speak so seriously and heavily, Manju.
Keep studying well and become a fine teacher.
The children of the future will benefit from it. What is it, Maari?
That is exactly why I am studying now.
Maari, it seems you destroyed that liquor shop, didn’t you?
Yes. I do not know what is going to happen now.
Nothing will happen.
No man dared to do such a thing, yet this buffalo managed it.
Maari, not just shops, just hit everyone who drinks as well
What? Are you calling me an alcoholic now?
I only drink occasionally when I meet my friends.
You're drinking too much these days, better reduce it!
Fine then. We have reached the edge of the village now. You may leave.
Why can’t you come to college with me? We can walk and talk together.
Why? What will you give me if I come?
Look at you. Enough of this teasing.
Cross the Boundary
I will give whatever you ask
Did you hear that, Maari?
As we cant cross the village border, right
Anyways, we don't want it
Mom asked me to stay calm till the fair complete, you go now
Sister, I cannot find my buffalo. Please help me look for it.
I'm not doing those activities
Go
Sister.
How many times must I tell you?
No, please listen to me, sister.
Come on
When are those people going to arrive?
Maari have done something.
I wonder what they are doing now.
Raju, my legs are aching. Look there, they have arrived.
That is exactly why we came here.
If you drink this, all your leg pain, arm pain, and every other ache will disappear
Do you know what Maari did today?
She caused panic throughout the entire village.
Give it to me.' -No, I do not want it.
Why is he refusing now?
-Maari, the entire liquor shop was destroyed.
From tomorrow onwards, the alcohol prices will rise even more. -Hey, stop it, man.
What do you mean stop it?
Our pockets and savings will be gone from tomorrow
Can you not understand that? -I do not care about any of that.
This morning, when Anji sister and Janki sister were speaking about it
I felt Maari actually did the right thing.
Drinking occasionally is alright,
but once it becomes an addiction..
what do you gain from it?
Even my father was the same.
He ruined our entire lives because of alcohol.
Get up, Dad. Please get up. Dad!
-[coughing]
Dad...
[weeping]
Everyone hold him.
Hold him.
They're my taking my husband away
[Stageplay, playing]
In the village of Mahishapuram, Yellayya had passed away..
and his wife was called for the performance.
Burdened with unbearable sorrow and pain, she cried that her child was still so young
yet her husband had left him behind.
Her tears flowed endlessly
like the rivers Krishna and Godavari as she mourned the death of her husband.
[Stageplay, playing]
[Stageplay, playing]
[Stageplay, playing]
We earn respect because of Maari.
Whatever happens, I will protect Maari no matter what.
What is wrong with drinking alcohol now? Come on, have some.
Even after hearing everything said about alcohol, you are still drinking shamelessly?
Alright, let him leave. We will drink after he goes.
Then why did you ask us to bring it here in the first place?
I thought we would drink quietly and remain calm.
I never imagined he would change like this.
Come on, let us leave from here.
Keep moving. -Okay, keep moving
Mother-in-law, how does the kolam look? -It looks lovely.
Once I marry your son, I’ll make our doorstep beautiful with kolam too!
Yes, yes, you certainly will.
[bellows]
Here, brother
take this money. If you happen to go that side, please hand it over to Jyoti.
Okay then! -And also ask them to make a nice pair of earrings.
Fine, I will get it done.
Why are the two of you staring at each other like that?
Take it, brother.
Nothing much, Kittaiah.
He's our clan head
and this is his son, Uttam
They are from Ramapuram.
He secured a government job through the sports quota.
The matter is..
that he saw your daughter quite some time ago..
and has become very fond of her.
That's it!
He has been saying that he will marry no one else but her.
When my brother told me this..
I asked them to visit on an auspicious day
so that we could speak with you properly. That is why we are here now.
What is the matter, Kittaiah?
Why do you seem so worried?
I also heard that your daughter scored excellent marks in her B.Ed examinations
Even he noticed it in today’s newspaper. Here..
Auntie, have a look
It would be beneficial for both our families if kids hold government jobs, right?
Why are you sitting so silently, Kittaiah?
I am thinking about the same thing, brother-in-law.
We have only just heard about this proposal, after all. Let us take some time and see.
Someone came offering gold..
and yet you are saying “perhaps later.”
Do you think you will find a better match than this?
They travelled all this way simply because he likes your daughter.
Alright then, brother-in-law.
Since you insist, let us fix a good day and move things forward.
Very well then.
Inform us once you find an auspicious date.
We shall leave now. -Yes, yes, take care on your way.
How many times must I tell you not to take Maari into this street?
Why are you always wandering around this lane?
Can you not find any other road to walk on?
Brother-in-law! Brother-in-law! Take the sweets.
Brother-in-law!
You are giving me sweets, but first tell me why I should take them?
Take one first, then I will tell you.
Is it because you found a good marriage match?
Marriage? No, not that, brother-in-law.
Oh, stop it. Do not act clever as though I have not noticed anything
I saw everything.
Just listen to me once. -What is it that you want to say?
Someone arrived at your house in a car, didn’t they? Go and marry him.
Marry him, live in fancy buildings, and sleep beside him.
Have you lost your mind?
Please listen to me first.
I do not even know who they are.
Raghavendra uncle simply brought them home.
They said the groom has a government job and that he liked me.
They all spoke among themselves, that is all.
And what does any of that have to do with me?
So what if he has a job or property? Who cares?
Why would I marry him, brother-in-law?
Whether it is heaven or hell, I only want to be with you.
Do not speak nonsense like that.
I brought sweets because I passed my B.Ed examination, and look at you!
Is that true?
You came here to tell me about your exam results?
Did you really pass the exam?
Please do not misunderstand me.
I will not speak like this again
I promise. Trust me.
I said I would not repeat it, didn’t I?
Bloody hell, do you truly love me that much?
Your father is searching for a groom with a government job
while I am only a shepherd.
How do you think this could ever work?
Do you think you are going to remain like this forever?
And do you think I would let that happen?
Once I get a proper job, we can live happily together.
Hearing you speak like this fills me with courage
but at the same time, I fail to understand you.
There is nothing to worry about, brother-in-law.
I will give you sweeter than this!
Which sweet?
What is it then? Tell me, how should someone say when they topped the exams?
We should say “congrats"
Congrats
Thanks, brother-in-law.
Congrats.
You already said that once, didn’t you?
Well, I was hoping for something more in return.
Shall I tie myself to your proud moustache?
Shall I stay bound to you for all of time?
Shall I place my very life in your hands?
Shall I circle around you and offer you all my five life-breaths?
Your sharp glances attack me without even asking
That burning warmth touches my nerves and sets them aflame
Shall I melt like sweet milk for your affection?
Shall I surrender all my beauty to you completely?
When I keep calling you “Bava, Bava,” It feels so beautiful to be with you
Shall I become your shadow and follow you always?
What would become of me if you were not there?
When I keep calling you “Bava, Bava,” It feels so beautiful to be with you
Shall I become your shadow and follow you always?
What would become of me if you were not there?
Shall I tie myself to your proud moustache?
Shall I stay bound to you for all of time?
Shall I show you the image of you That I’ve hidden deep inside my two eyes?
Shall I tell you how fully I have filled my heart with only you?
Shall I reveal the playful shyness Resting upon my delicate cheeks?
Until the day our desires unite, Shall I carefully hide them within me?
Like souls born to never part..
Shall I accept you without hesitation?
Shall I declare that every corner of my heart belongs only to you?
No matter what rules or boundaries exist, Shall I place only your words above all else?
When I keep calling you “Bava, Bava,” It feels so beautiful to be with you
Shall I become your shadow and follow you always?
What would become of me if you were not there?
When I keep calling you “Bava, Bava,” It feels so beautiful to be with you
Shall I become your shadow and follow you always?
What would become of me if you were not there?
I have been struggling with this for so long now.
Whatever happens, I must sort her out today.
Hey, Anjannaa
While returning, get me some alcohol -Okay, sure
It seems I gonna deal with late at night.
Good heavens, you seem full of energy today
Get to work first.
Why are you getting involved in such nonsense?
-Shut up, you do yours!
Damn!
I could not even find a single buffalo today.
I have to catch hold of someone somehow.
Grandpa, you came to sell your buffalo, did you?
Fine then, let me see if I can find a deal for you.
Tell me,
how much do you want for this old buffalo?
Old? Do you think it is that old?
If you want it, pay me ₹3,000.
I will not sell it for even a rupee less than that.
This buffalo looks ancient to me, like a worn-out old beast.
I will give you ₹1,000. Take it or leave it.
₹1,000? Are you mad?
And why do you care hether it has given birth to five or six calves?
It is the buffalo that suffers through all that pain, not you. Just get lost
I'm not gonna sell it, if you are paying even less 1 rupee
Buy it if you want, otherwise leave.
Fine then, you do not sell, and I will not buy. Off you go.
You do not even have basic money with you,
and still nobody listens to me.
What sort of market is this? -Ah, there is someone.
Hey brother Mallanna
why do you look so worked up?
It has been two years since I bought this buffalo.
It neither mates nor gives birth.
It only eats and sleeps all day.
Seeing her we can say, whether it can make the deed or not
Do you think simply staring at it will solve the problem? Action does!
I will tell you a proper solution.
Look at this old hag! -Bloody!
Bloody fool, puffing smoke in rings!
Hey, Poshalu..
it seems Malli’s daughter-in-law has run away, hasn’t she?
Oh leave it, man.
You always need gossip for our daily gatherings. Get lost.
Did I tell her to run away or something?
I only said she has left. That is all.
Tell me then, is she coming back or not? -No, she is not.
Good heavens, you really are innocent.
In our younger days, we at least had one affair. These days they have four.
That is the only difference.
Where he is? He still has not arrived.
Where did he disappear to?
Look, Walk quietly.
I hope nobody sees me.
At last, he has arrived. Look there.
That buffalo looks strong. I suppose it will mate very powerfully as well.
No one is there. Open it, open the door
Come, come.
Come, come, come. Oh God!
Oh God!
Sniff this!
Why is it behaving like this? Is this buffalo actually good for mating or not?
What now? Are they expecting someone to teach it as well? Move aside.
Hey, be gentle. It hurts. -Hey, who is that?
Raju! Raju, where are you going?
Nobody is around, right? What is wrong with you?
Why are you behaving odd like this? Despite at this hour!
Come inside.
Raju! -There is a thief! A thief!
Damn it, some fool has woken up.
A thief?
Come on, hurry up, run! Hey, who is that?
Catch him! Stop there!
Who are you? -What happened, auntie? Who was it?
A thief came here.
What happened? Hey, who is that there?
Idiots, where have you disappeared to? Where did they even come from?
Hey, stop it now. Go back.
Bloody hell.
Thank God. You there, come on, let us go home.
Hey, come here.
What were you doing at that girl’s house?
Nothing, man, I forgot something, I want to take it back
Move
What is wrong with you?
You took us for sake of this?
Look at this place..
just a miserable hut and poverty sitation, come on
Hey, enough now. -To hell with this
Just look at her face, dull like a lifeless doll.
If we believe her, we will surely end on roads, just like her
[squeaking]
Hey, Biksham..
[squeaking]
Sister, this is revenge for seven years.
Hey, get down.
No, listen to me.
Maari!
[overlaps of voices]
Maari?
Wastrel..
How dare you hit my Maari?
[overlaps]
How dare you do this?
[overlaps]
If anything happens to Maari, it will bring destruction and a curse upon our village
First, apologise to all the villagers for your mistake.
Sir, please leave my son. I beg you.
Jalandhar, tell them we are sorry.
They will not fear your looks. This is not our village.
Say sorry.
I beg you, man.
Speak up.
It was a mistake.
If I ever see you in our village again, I will beat you badly.
Get lost.
What those villagers did to me that day...
I cannot sleep at night.
I cannot think straight.
I feel I'm just alive but dead inside, sister
I have to kill Maari anyhow. Help me on this!
Hold him, hold him. Hey, catch him.
What happened? He is dead.
What you are expecting will never happen. Leave now.
Sister.
Please do not say that. I came all this way trusting you.
You must help me somehow. Just do it, please
Not just me..
no one can make it happen.
Goddess Maramma is protecting that village.
If you go against her, you will suffer greatly.
It is already a miracle..
that you are still alive.
Please do not say that, sister.
Tell me what you want.
Money? Gold?
Land? Maybe a land?
I will give you anything
but do not reject my wish.
I will beg you.
What will you do with money after death?
Money can do anything, sister.
Tell me what cannot be done with money.
Look, I will give you two acres of land in your village.
-It will not work. Leave.
Then four acres -No, it still will not work.
I will give you five acres.
I will even educate your children.
I beg you, please don't say that!
Fine then!
We must perform a ritual at your house immediately.
Make all the arrangements.
Mahendra brother, why have you brought her here?
Hey, what is happening?
Who is she?
Stay quiet and sit there..
otherwise I will make you sit inside that ritual kolam itself.
As long as you keep this with you..
no power can harm you. -Okay, sister
Tie this at the doors
and make sure this thread is tied around the buffalo’s neck.
After that, I will tell you what must be done next.
Serve them water -Greetings, sir.
Greetings. Please, take your seat.
What is happening?
Sir, we must be more careful this time compared to the previous festival
Alright.
Approach our Ontikannu Swami..
We should meet him and find the auspicious time for the next festival. -Okay, sir
Karni? -Yes, brother, tell me.
How is Maari doing? -Maari is fine, brother.
We must stay very careful for the next four days
since the festival is near.
Also, some idols in our goddess temple are broken, aren’t they?
We need to rebuild them.
O' Mother Nagamma.. The one who born in anthill
With a red-eyed balls, and throat with black, Nagamma
O' Goddess Nagamma..
Please look after us, with your mercy, Goddess Nagamma
Come down, come down, O Nagamma, O divine and beautiful Nagamma!
Remove all our sorrows, O Nagamma, Please descend, O mother Nagamma.
Come down, come down, O Nagamma, O divine and beautiful Nagamma
Remove all our sorrows, O Nagamma, Please descend, O mother Nagamma
Brother..
As idols got prayed, any evil might eye us!
Sleep here whole night and you can go home on morning!
Spreading your majestic hood, O Nagamma, You dance upon the clouds above
O serpent mother who protects every home, O our sacred mother Nagamma
Spreading your majestic hood, O Nagamma, You dance upon the clouds above
Come down, come down, O Nagamma, O divine and beautiful Nagamma.
Anjamma, why did you left Pasangi at home?
I let him sleep as why to carry all this way!
We bring you bowls of milk, O Nagamma, We offer streams of fresh milk to you
We bring silver vessels for you, O Nagamma, We offer sweet sacred nectar to you
Bowls of milk for you, Pure flowing milk for you
Silver vessels for you, Sweet offerings for you
Come down, come down, O Nagamma, O divine and beautiful Nagamma
Please descend, O mother Nagamma, Remove all our worries and suffering
Maari?
Maari?
At the thresholds of our homes, O Nagamma, We decorate with beautiful floral designs
With garlands of jasmine flowers for you, Come forward before us, O mother Nagamma
Rangoli at our doorsteps, Flower decorations for you,
Jasmine garlands for your worship, Please come before us, O mother.
Mother…! Come down, come down, O Nagamma,
Please descend, O mother Nagamma, Remove all our sorrows.
Come down, come down, O Nagamma…
Come down, come down, O Nagamma…
Why this is happening now?
[music playing]
Come down, come down, O Nagamma…
I wonder where that boy has gone.
Karni? -Yes, sister.
Have you seen Pasangi? -No, sister.
Where could he have gone?
I do not know.
Even Maari is nowhere to be seen.
Hey, Pasangi fell down into well
Oh God...
[sobbing]
[overlaps] [sobbing]
[sobbing] [overlaps
[sobbing] [overlaps
I never expected Pasangi would end up like this.
I cannot understand what happened.
Why have you been drinking since morning?
Poor Pasangi..
how could he die so suddenly?
I still do not understand what really happened.
Yes, brother. It feels strange.
Considering all the situations, did Maari pushed Pasangi into well?
He has been behaving very strangely these days.
What are you saying?
Maari is not only dear to me..
he was also Pasangi’s friend.
Why would he ever do something like that?
Maari is my closest friend.
Because of Maari, I have respect in this village.
Without Maari, I am nothing.
What is it, sister? Why did you ask me to come home immediately?
The day your wish comes true has finally arrived.
The talisman you tied to him stick has started working.
Be careful.
Alright, sister.
Hey!
Yes. brother -Come on
You are like my own brother.
I will always look after you like family.
Tell me something.
Every time you drink, you cry about this, don’t you?
In four more days..
You are supposed to sacrifice Maari as an offering to the goddess.
Do you remember that?
You keep saying Maari is your life..
What did you just say?
Are you mad or what?
Why are you picking a fight with him? He did not say anything wrong.
You are the one who is supposed to surrender Maari and offer to Goddess!
Did you forget that?
Oh yes…
I have to give offering to Goddess, right
I will not do it.
Either I will die or run from here
Why would I kill him? I will save somehow.
Whomever try to stop me, I'll take care of it
What are you talking?
Have you gone mad?
If you let him escape, the villagers will never spare you.
They will kill us too for standing beside you.
Stop acting crazy and stay quiet.
If Maari leaves this village, the whole place will turn into a graveyard.
He grew up with me since childhood.
He played with me,
stood beside me whenever anyone threatened me,
followed me even when I stayed silent,
and stayed with me through every fight.
And to someone like him..
Me..
Whatever happens, I will take him away from this village tonight.
At least she can live peacefully in the forest.
What is wrong with him today?
He drank too much. His mind is not working properly.
I will protect him like my own eyes.
He is my brother. -Yes, yes, we know that.
I will not let him die.
I will save him.
Forget about saving him. Just drink and go to sleep.
Hey, he fell down somewhere.
No, he did not fall. He collapsed because he was drunk.
Go to sleep now
I will save my Maari, man!
Darn it!
I will make him cross the village border.
Okay, fine! Everyone cries for one thing, and he cries for another.
Whatever happens
I will take him beyond the boundary.
Karni brother..
Brother, wake up!
What is wrong with you? Why are you creating scene early in the morning?
Get up first.
Everyone has gathered at the temple. They are calling you there.
Raju, Yadu, wake up. They are calling you to temple
Bhaskar brother, get up quickly.
Come fast.
Where did Maari go? -Oh, it is already morning.
Where did Maari go?
Did she go to the house or what?
Fine, let us go.
Sir, the festival is only four days away.
From today onwards, the rituals and jewellery offering to Goddess will start
Every day has its own ritual.
Karni, take Maremma with you and prepare properly.
Alright, sir.
Let us begin the rituals.
Darn it
He is my brother.
I will look after him.
Mother, where is Maari?
I do not know where he went.
You go and search for him too.
Ramswamy, is Maari here?
Why would Maari come to me? He has to be with you
I have not seen him since morning.
What is this?
We took him out for one day
and did not even tie the sacred ring yet.
Your family has done this work for generations, hasn’t it?
How can a shepherd forget his own cattle?
This is a bad omen.
This is a bad omen.
Maari is only a mute animal. he may have lost his way.
Then what are the people who can speak doing?
Where is your elder?
Karni? -Yes, brother.
Did you find Maari? -No, brother.
I could not find him anywhere.
Oh no.
He must be somewhere nearby. Go and search for him
Hey.
Everyone, spread out and look for Maari.
Go and get him
Maari..
Maari..
Brother Ram, look at grassfields
Maari..
Maari, where have you gone?
Maari..
Goddess Maariamma
please save us.
Maari..
Hey, Maari.
Did you find him? -No, brother.
Where is Karni? -I do not know.
Swami..
our Maariamma is missing.
Maari..
What happened?
What do you mean missing? Where did Maari go?
He must be somewhere here. -Everyone is searching for him
Say it out
The priest said Maari has gone out of the village.
Maari..
Karni, what have you done?
Did you not listen to us even after we warned you? -What happened?
Brother, last night he kept saying..
he would do something with Maari.
Why would I kill Maari? I wanted to save him.
Whatever happened,
I was ready to face it.
Stop. Hey.
Maari was meant to be offered to the goddess.
No one would dare send him out of the village.
Tell us the truth, or I will kill you right now.
Brother Dharma, I swear I am telling the truth.
I swear upon Maari
I did nothing.
He sends Maari away from the village and still swears on his name.
What is this, Karni?
We trusted you and raised you, but never expected this from you.
You should be ashamed of yourself. This village’s curse will haunt you forever.
What?
Come on, move. Slowly come over
[overlaps]
Come slowly.
[overlaps]
Come fast.
[overlaps]
Come fast.
[overlaps]
Hey! What happened?
Sit...sit...sit... Maari!
Hey!
Hey, Maari!
What a crazy-woman she is!
She did what exactly told!
Hey!
Hey, unload it -Okay, brother
Hey, drag down the engine and bring Boolachamma here!
How she can die now?
I thought she'll stand for us, but dumped like anything!
Hey, he's just normal buffalo
But once the crack of dawn comes, it'll be my Yama.
We have to kill it by morning, go and tie it!
Bring up the weapons -Okay, brother
It fell in the trap
Hey!
Tie him up. -He's going, man
Hold him
Hold him -Keep running
Hey
Brother, we searched everywhere, we didn't find a clue
Guess it entered into forest!
Hey.. -Brother?
I'm holding that verge of fear from the moment I crossed it the boundary
It has to be died for my existence
Where did it gone? Tell me, man!
What's this, Karni?
We caressed till date and didn't expected this in return from you
He sends Maari away from the village and still swears on her name.
Go to hell, man
Go and bring, Maari
If not, I will kill you.
Dharma brother, that's my life!
I'll bring Maari back in 3 days
Maari..
Brother?
Yes.
Did you see Maari this side? -Maari..
Our village's buffalo -No, brother!
Tie it tightly.
Brother. Yes.
There are 5 check posts in the forest.
Every cop there will milk the bribe till our pocket get empty.
I already settled those!
They wont' halt you
Okay, brother. Hey., keep it fast
Brother? -Make it out
Did you saw any buffalo in this way?
-Buffalo? No, I don't see
Where are you from?
Maheshapuram, brother
It's embodiment of Goddess Mareamma, brother!
Wonder where it gone, can't able to find!
What?
The Embodiment of Maremma, is missing?
I've to whack that Maheshapuram's buffalo in one whack!
Yes.
Finally, he did the deed!
What brother? Who is?
That fellow, that Jalandar!
Don't know why but, he wants avenge his revenge for Maari
He must have done something wrong.
Brother, if you beat the trash out of him, we can crack this out
Bloody hell, I'll take care of it
Jalandar, come out
Come out.
Hey, who are you? -Where is Maari?
Maari?
Hey, stop that.
Who's that Maari. to whom, it' Maari?
I'll whack your hands like hell
[overlaps]
Stop it, Karni.
We ain't looking for any chaos or settlements
We want Mareamma
Hey...
Where are you hiding him?
What's this ruckus about Mareamma, man?
What's this context about?
Dharma brother, he's not respecting you
We need to remind them who controls this place
Mareamma, is embodiment of our village Goddess!
Where did you hide him?
[burst of amused laughter]
Hey! -A buffalo?
What the heck I can do with a buffalo, man?
We don't even have cattle!
Hey, don't talk nonsense.
The moment when we humiliated you among our village..
since then, you got revenge on our Maari, and we knew!
Speak out, or else, we will dig you underground
Look around you.
If you find it, then question me!
If not, bugger off!
But, don't come here with suspicious crap!
Maybe you're free to wander around village like vagabonds!
I have work to do.
Dharma brother..
He is saying that he doesn't know.
The fair is about to happen
Go and find for it, right
Why do you have to suspect unnecessarily?
If necessary, I will send my people too.
Hey! Go looking around.
Hey Mahendra! I will tell you one thing.
I'm leaving as of now, if he involved in this..
we will see his end!
Be careful.
Hey!
Maremma, is our everything!
I will see you. Go away.
Hey! Go away.
Dad.. Take the girl inside.
Yes.
We have to bring him here, even by killing that Karni
Then that Dharma will give us respect
Yes.
Not like past times!
Let's make it a real Jathara.
Keep moving! Okay, brother
Go
Karni..
The whole village is going crazy.
Do whatever and bring Maari back home!
Jathara is also coming.
Brother-in-law!
Be careful. Okay.
Come on, lets leave
Brother! Brother!
Why there are many people here, what happened?
Our Maari is missing
Hey!
How you can let that buffalo go away?
I never saw a buffalo like that
And to where you gonna go and find for?
I have to get into forest and find it
Brother, I will make a big deal out of it.
What a buffalo eat and where it sleeps
How the foot prints look alike, and where it will stay
I can recognize that
Brother, I will follow you
And I recognize
If we able to find it out, just give me my cut!
If you find it, our village will give you a feast.
Come. Then let's go.
Madam, you are pregnant, please get inside
Brother...
Knives, sticks, bulls, diesel tans, make everything ready, man
Okay, brother -Come on
Bro, they ruined everything in the name of suspicion!
Imagine what they gonna do, if they sense, if we're behind this!
Whatever they do, it's only till that buffalo alive
All of them will die, once the buffalo die!
It's like, one rock for two birds!
If we kill him, we get rid of it, and my revenge will be sorted
Take off your vehicle.
Hey, take it off.
He is not to be sacrificed for Mareamma
He should be sacrificed for this Jalandra.
Hey, come on. Get lost.
If you find it, just whack it down
Hop in
Keep moving
Karni, don't get bothered!
I know every inch in this forest, I know where every animal will reside
I'll go in and get your buffalo back
Do you think, I'm saying some joke? Come, with me
Brother, shall we go?
Before they got Maari, I've to hunt it, and whack it into pieces
Have to serve those pieces to fauna
Those villagers has to go bonkers to find Maari
He's making us bonkers for Maari who's gonna die in 2 days
Importantly..
that douche, Karni, man! -Yes, brother
Come on, guys
Mother-in-law..
Sit down.
Brother-in-law, used to stay in village as Maari isn't supposed to go out anywhere!
He has left this village.
Brother-in-law has also left this village and went to the forest.
What is brother-in-law's fault? -What should I do?
I don't know how that Maramma's mother thinks.
He has left my son in the forest.
She is torturing people in the village.
I don't know what will happen.
I don't know. Did you eat your food?
I am not hungry even if my brother-in-law is like this.
I will also sleep here, mother-in-law
You are all alone here
Nothing will happen.
Do I have any fear? I will sleep.
But the times in the village are not good.
It's better to stay back in same place
You go home and eat your food.
It's all blessings of Goddess Mareamma
Okay, mother-in-law
Manju.
Where are you coming from?
Not for roaming, dad
I went to Aunt's place as she's all alone
Ah, what else you can expect from Karni?
Dear, don't go to that home again
Manju..
What brings you here, brother-in-law? -Shall we play with Maari?
Hey Manju.
Where are you going? Playing with brother-in-law. Are you nuts?
Go and study. Come.
The ache in my heart..
let it remain for now
Gentle breeze, carry a message to my brother-in-law
He alone can ease my sorrow
Maari, please come across my brother-in-law here
My thoughts are in turmoil without him
Could you at least come with me as far as the college?
We can walk by talking all way!
I've always thinking of you
Always concerned about you
The games we used to play keep replaying in my mind..
and tears begin to fall at once
Just as that parrot once said, we are like Ram and Sita
When will your time of separation come to an end?
My heart aches in your absence
Gentle breeze, carry a message to my brother-in-law
He alone can ease my sorrow!
Sir, if we do not conduct the ritual immediately..
not a single person in the village will survive.
Every living creature will turn against humans.
Danger is approaching.
We must complete the ritual arrangements quickly.
Giving leniance to bug, ends up ruining our entire hair
It's like that.
Forget Karni and forget this ritual too. Neither of them matters now.
That is why I sent my men out.
Once they find Maari, I will personally conduct the real ritual myself.
Maari.. Maari..
What happened now? -What happened, man?
We ran out of diesel.
Idiot, are we going to marriage? Did you not check it beforehand?
Brother, get down and check it.
Damn it. Give me the diesel can.
Hey, give me. Hey, diesel,
diesel, diesel. Come this side. Here.
Darn it, there's the buffalo!
Matchsticks!
[burst of evil laughter]
Hey, give me the gun.
Give it brother.
Hey, come on.
Hey, it is Karni. What are you doing here?
Is Maari here?
No.
Jalandar is still trying to kill Maari. -Why would he do that?
He death was written in our hands
so he has gone mad. -Once we find Maari..
his head has to roll over when we whack him!
Hey, don't know where he is!
You search the nearby villages
We will search in the forest -Okay
Razak, let's go.
Be careful.
I don't understand anything, Karni.
We're roaming like hell, but still no luck
We've to find Maari, no matter what!
Karni! -Sister?
What brings you here? -Sister..
Maari crossed the village boundary, and now I cannot find her anywhere.
They are saying Jalandra kidnapped Maari..
but he escaped from him and ran away somewhere.
We are searching the entire forest
yet we still could not find him. -Do not worry, brother.
He cannot have gone too far. he must be somewhere nearby.
With Goddess Maremma’s blessings, we will surely find him
I wonder when you last ate. Sit down
and eat something first.
Eat.
Uncle, what happened?
Why are you running? -Some buffalo is creating havoc among the cattle over there.
Useless hell
Even my buffalo is tied there.
I do not know if it is safe or not.
I am going there now.
Oh God! Sister, it might be our buffalo.
I am going there too. Hey, you come with me.
Goddess Maremma..
please help us find our Maari.
We must begin the rituals immediately without delay.
Parvathamma.
You there, go and collect paddy grains
from every house in the village.
Alright.
Go now.
Go.
Devamma, bring the grains for the ritual.
Anjamma. Yes.
Mother, I am hungry.
What happened? -I'm hungry
[sobbing]
What happened, dear? Why are you crying?
Goddess Maramma..
I lost my son before your festival is here
There is not even a grain left in my house.
I do not know what you are planning for us, Mother.
Everything rests in your hands now.
What terrible suffering has fallen upon you, dear?
What is this?
The festival is near, yet we do not even have grains at home, and now we have lost Maari too.
There is no sacred rice left…
No one comes forward to look after us.
We do not even have the fortune To prepare an offering for you, O Maariamma
Goddess Mareamma..
Save us from this!
The stream is overflowing in rage,
Who is it that has turned against us?
Just to stay alive..
The people of Maisapuram are fighting endlessly
Before courage can rise within us, Fear lays siege upon us.
To resist and stop this misery, We no longer have the strength
Swearing upon the very breath left in us, We promise to repay this debt
For the terrible tragedy that has happened
For the mistake that was committed, O Mother, do not abandon us
Goddess Maramma..
we made this mistake unknowingly.
Please forgive your children and show us mercy.
Do not unleash your anger upon this village.
Save us from your wrath.
Janaki, come and take these.
Dear, bring some more rice. -Yes, I am bringing it.
Yadamma, you come. Yes, sister.
Offer the grains in her name.
The festival must happen properly.
Manjula... Yes, sister. Take it.
Goddess Maremma, this is why you stopped us
from selling these
grains to the merchant earlier?
Wherever you are, Maari, come back to our village.
We must conduct the festival peacefully.
There's the Maari
It is so dark here, and he blends into the darkness.
Where did he go?
Saritha, why are you so tensed?
Instead of thinking clearly,
he keeps taking his anger out on everyone.
Now he is even messing with the Goddess Maremma
He will ruin all our lives.
He makes sure every vehicle gets a full tank.
It would be good if he paid for our vehicle too, wouldn’t it?
If he hears you talking like that, he will smash your head open, zip it
Hey, pull over!
Why did he stop here? Did he spot the buffalo or what?
Get down. Hey, get down.
Why is he laughing?
I wonder what is going on in his mind now. -Hey, shut up.
Hey, Biccham!
As they say, heart stays with the lover while the body stays with the husband.
You're searching for the booze, right?
You madman.
Okay. Get down and drink.
How much will you drink?
At least you understand our pain, brother.
You truly have love in your heart.
Go on, drink it.
Hey, you have to talk even if you are drunk. Drink it.
Oh God!
Madam, please serve three meals.
What is this madness?
We have been roaming around endlessly for one buffalo.
I cannot take this anymore. My legs are aching.
I am leaving.
If you want to go, then leave.
After coming all this way, if we return empty-handed
the whole village will spit on us
We can eat something available on roads
Come on, lets search for Mari
What if we fail to catch Maari?
At least let us eat something for now.
Let's search for it
Brother.
Brother.
Why are you sitting quietly after drinking so much?
You are drunk, aren't you?
Dig a ten-foot pit here.
A teen-foot pit? But why?
Are you planning to bury everyone from village in this hole?
Why should we bury people?
If we bury that buffalo here, half the villagers will die automatically.
My foot!
Hey, get up. Bring those rods here
Get up.
Get up. Dig it!
Get up.
Hey, get up.
Karni, be careful.
What happened, Karni? Why is the ground slippery here?
I can see a bear over there. -A bear?
Move aside.
It is not bear, it is a buffalo trail. I knew it.
I think Mari came this way.
He cannot have gone too far from here.
He must be somewhere nearby.
We can keep searching for him. But, Karni..
please do not leave me alone here.
Wild animals will roam here
If any thing sees me, they will hold my neck and I'll die immediately
I beg you.
We are digging this pit without even knowing why we are doing it.
Hey..
This is the crossing point of four routes.
No matter where Maari goes..
He has to pass through here, and will fall straight into this pit.
Then?
Move aside.
Hey, move aside.
Move aside.
He is drunk out of his senses and mumbling nonsense.
Drat!
You lot are sleeping like fools. Wake up.
Mari didn't came here
Bloody hell.
Manjula..
we are happier with people who love us than..
with those we love ourselves.
I liked you from the very first moment I saw you
and that is why I decided to marry you.
Marry me, Manjula,
and I will show you what heaven feels like.
Do you not think it is selfish to leave the person
we truly love just because someone else loves us?
You may have liked me from the moment you saw me
but ever since I was born, I have loved my brother-in-law.
And as for heaven,
I believe sharing a simple meal with the people we love is heaven itself.
Please do not come here again and humiliate yourself.
What did you say to him? Why did he walk away angrily?
I spoke about brother-in-law.
Don’t you already know about our love, Dad?
Manju, have you lost your mind?
You studied well
and you will soon get a proper job.
If you marry someone educated and settled like him, your life will be meaningful.
Why are you roaming around with a shepherd?
I know parents want their daughters to marry well-settled men
But whenever I am with brother-in-law,
I feel as safe and loved as I do with you, Dad.
Tell me, what more could a girl ask for?
And if I marry him
I can stay close to you forever as well.
Why are you worrying so much?
Karni, take this!
Have it
Karni, this forest may not have done anything for us directly..
but it provided all!
Yet we ignore it and search for happiness elsewhere.
You are right.
A man who turns away from the forest is only walking towards his own death.
How's it?
Hunger does not care about taste, and sleep does not care about comfort.
You may never have stepped outside your village, right?
but you still speak wisely.
No matter which village it is, people everywhere play the same roles in life.
It's true, brother. We all learn different skills just to survive our hunger
Look at that bird, even it died for survival.
That is nature’s law. For one creature to live,
another must die.
None of us can change that law
Yes.
We can't change it because of the natural law.
Be it you, not me, and not even our Maari.
In four days..
you yourself are supposed to cut Maari’s head and carry her around the village
Hey, Yadagiri.
Everyone, come here quickly. Our Maari is dead.
Huh?
Our Maari has died.
What? Do you think this is really our buffalo?
Brother, what happened?
Go away, brother. Brother, what happened?
Maari is dead.
Go and inform the villagers. I will go and tell Karni.
Karni! Karni!
Maari is dead! Maari is dead!
Maari had been missing for so long, and now this has happened.
What are we supposed to do?
Brother Dharma, Maari was dead
What? Maari is dead?
Maari…
Maari…
We came here thinking about what will happen cattle, as you are in deep pain
After seeing him, it was gone
Though he's hungry to core
Yet he didn't bother about it
But he heard the pain of those animals
We need to bow him down Look, Karni..
whether you feed those buffaloes
or run your household
you must take responsibility for them. Do not cry.
Here, take this money for the month.
Take care of yourself.
[panting] [sobbing]
This is our Maari
Our Maari
Karni, look
Our Maari.. See
[sobbing]
My dear..
Hey, stop it.
Who said this is our Maari?
This is not our Maari. What?
He does not have the earring we tied to his ear.
Yes, you are right. Maari always had an earring.
Karni, there are only two days left for the festival.
Goddess Maremma is furious
and the entire village is in chaos.
We must find Maari and bring him back.
Go. Go.
Hey, you also go.
Okay, brother. -Start searching everywhere
Razak, you are still here?
Your wife is worrying about your child health, as it's not good
Really? I will leave right away.
Karni, my kid isn't doing well, it seems!
I will go home.
Karni, you rushed here the moment you heard Maari had died.
How are you ever going to sacrifice her to the goddess?
Brother-in-law. Clothes.
Come, little parrot… come here.
Pick a good person’s photo
Will you bring Yekanna Swamy?
Or will you bring Komuravelli Mallanna?
Go on, little parrot.
This boy’s horoscope belongs to Lord Rama
and this girl’s horoscope is a sitamma
When they grow upthe two of them will become husband and wife
Maari!
Hey, Bali Anna!
Go this way, OK Anna
Hey! Come on, walk this way!
Hey! walk this way!
Sir, Maari has still not returned
and the men sent to search for him are also missing.
Without the offering, it will be impossible to calm Goddess Maramma.
How are we supposed to conduct the festival?
All of this happened because of Karni.
The whole village supported him every month,
yet he failed to protect the buffalo. He drank like a fool and let him escape.
If he does not bring him back
we will burn down his house ourselves.
Hey, stop it. Stop it.
Priest. Sir.
Let us begin the festival as we do every year.
If Maari doesn't turn up, we will leave it to Goddess
You have to say these verses to maids
But not after doing the deed! I'll talk once my boys get it back!
Your end! -Get lost
Go on!
Leave it near the temple and come back.
Take it carefully.
Oh, Narsanna!
Yes… near the temple?
Yes, yes.
I’m coming, brother. I’m coming.
I’m bringing it carefully.
Grandmother
Oh, my dear little one!
Mother, look at her.
Mother, look at her.
Haa Chinnamma,
we must offer the Bonam properly to Mother Maremma.
Pray that we receive plenty of rain.
Hold it carefully and take it with devotion.
Come on
Get lost from here!
Go away. Go away from here.
We aren't gonna let you visit our temple!
Go away. -Hey! -Go away.
Why are you shouting?
Hey, you don't have access to visit here, why are you here?
Sir!
My son did a great sin.
I pray to Goddess that, don't let that sin passed onto his wife
and my grandson and leave
If you do anything bad to us...
...you will be cursed by your mother.
That is your fate.
Get lost, scram
Brother asked to look after the buffalo foot prints, keep moving
Brother?
Brother, and Buffalo, are nothing but same!
I'll break your skull, if you mock about brother, ay!
Keep walking -You walk properly
Hey, this way!
Maari..
Bali, give me the bullets.
Maari!
Hey, you wastrel..
Karni..
This is revenge for my seven years of suffering. I will not let it go.
Hey, Jalandar, wastrel
If yours is seven years of revenge, mine is ten years of love.
How do you expect me to let it go?
I will offer you to this forest! Come on, wastrel!
[bellows]
[panting]
Karna, is here!
Perform the sacred ritual, adorn your foreheads with holy marks
The time has come to satisfy the Mother's hunger
Leave your homes and come to your Mother
Fulfill the vow that has remained unpaid for many years.
Decorate the sacred earth with colorful offerings
Pray to the Mother to grant the boons you seek
This is the moment when all sorrows are left behind
This festival is the very breath of the village
Let the drums resound with thunderous beats
Let us dance to the swaying rhythm of the Mother.
Let everyone lose themselves in devotion and dance for the Mother
Perform the sacred ritual, adorn your foreheads with holy marks
The time has come to satisfy the Mother's hunger
The love you nurtured, the bond you cherished You must now learn to let it go
If those who raised and cared for you Have asked this of you
You must accept it with bowed head
If one life is lost, an entire village survives
This is not destruction, It is food for the Mother
This is the custom of this land; Sacrifice is the tradition of your lineage
If you choose to see it that way, You will not notice the ties of attachment
The wound in your heart Becomes a worthy offering for the village
What flows is not merely blood It is a sacred anointing for the Mother
Let the drums resound with thunderous beats Let us dance to the swaying rhythm of the Mother
Let everyone lose themselves in devotion and dance for the Mother
Let the drums resound with thunderous beats Let us dance to the swaying rhythm of the Mother
Let everyone lose themselves in devotion and dance for the Mother

You have killed my Maari with my own hands.
It's like dying all alone
I won't do these things again
Karni, this isn't a sin
It's like celebration done for Goddess
Our devotions and cultures are more important than our relations
Leaving our love to save those cultures..
it'll be consider as sacrifice but not a mistake
Goddess is at peace for your act now!
The whole village will be calm now.
