Fifteen Years of Waiting for Migratory Birds

Episode 8

2004 College Entrance Exam Scores

Our Xuanxuan was wrongly accused. Look.

His College Entrance Exam scores are high enough to enter an undergraduate college.

Auntie, when is he able to come out?

The lawyer said his crime isn't that heavy.

If the opposing party were able to accept the compromise,

he'll be declared guilty without being sued.

Perhaps, Xuanxuan would be let out earlier that way.

Auntie, can you help me pass on a message to him?

Oh right, you have a classmate called Li Li who wanted me to tell you something.

She said, "Don't forget to see the migratory birds together next year".

Can you help me tell her

to forget about that?

And can you tell my parents

to stop worrying about me and stop visiting me?

Lawyer Wang, did you tell him? What did he say?

He's locked himself up. He's not interested in anything.

He even said for his parents to stop visiting him.

I thought he was in a very bad mood, so I didn't ask any further.

Based on my experience, you should just give him some space.

♫ You don’t need to explain yourself. I understand it all. ♫

♫ It must have been hard for you to make this decision, too. ♫

♫ What do I need to say? ♫

Don't they come every year? Let's come back next year when they come back.

♫ Pretend to be strong, you understand me. ♫

Next year?

We don't even know where we'll end up next year.

It doesn't matter where we'll end up. As long as we make a promise, we'll definitely come back.

I'm sorry, Li Li.

It seems like I won't be able to keep our promise next year.

Even though migratory birds are incredible,

there is still a human being called Pei Shangxuan

among animals that can keep their promises.

May human Li Li remember her promise with human Pei Shangxuan.

It doesn't matter whether it's 40,000 miles or 100,000 miles,

we can still come back. With the migratory birds as our witnesses, we'll never break our promise.

♫ If I don’t think about the hurt, I won’t feel pain. ♫

Pei Shangxuan, you said

that you're the best at keeping your promises.

When you come back, we'll go see the migratory birds together.

Okay?

I took notes for every single match in the 2004 European Championship.

I wish that soccer can help Pei Shangxuan find hope again.

However, the Greece team was undefeatable

and became the champion in the end.

Moreover, the German team entered a losing streak

and were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

♫ I will be fine. I promise you that I’ll remember. ♫

♫ I’ll work harder to make myself live a happier life. ♫

♫ Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. ♫

♫ I promise you that I’ll forget. ♫

Thank you.

♫ If I don’t think about the hurt, I won’t feel pain. ♫

He didn't take it, he wants me to return it to you.

Thank you.

Li Li! Li Li!

It's great that you're here. Come with me to the real estate office.

- You want to rent a place? - Yeah.

My current roommates are all night owls.

I can't get my beauty sleep because of them. My skin is suffering.

You're worrying too much.

I still have some things to take care of. I'll come with you after I finish.

Huh?

Every weekend is Pei Shangxuan Day.

No one in his family has been home these past few weeks.

My Li Li... How long are you going to persist for?

Miss, who are you looking for?

I'm looking for Pei Shangxuan's family.

They moved.

- They moved?! - Yes.

I think they moved in case rumors started.

That's why they were rushing to move.

They say that you can drown your sorrows with a drink,

but why am I still unhappy after drinking so much alcohol?

Didn't we agree that you'd accompany me to drink?

You were supposed to listen to me rant about the barriers in trying to fulfill my dreams.

How did it become me accompanying you to drink?

Is it because of Pei Shangxuan again?

He was released last month.

But when I went to his house, they already moved out.

Do you think he doesn't want to contact me? Is that so?

I really regret it.

Why didn't I contact him that summer after the College Entrance Exams?

If I had contacted him earlier,

do you think the result would've been different?

Li Li, do you remember our last gathering where we discussed our dreams?

I was able to guess yours even though you weren't willing to say them.

Pei Shangxuan is someone you can't let go of in this lifetime.

I also don't know why

I only stayed by his side all these years.

But there are some things that I can't bring myself to say.

Daniel, do you think I'm a coward?

Am I right?

You're too serious.

The more you put out, the more you become afraid of losing.

You're afraid that when you tell Pei Shangxuan that you like him,

he'll reject you.

At that time, you won't even be able to be friends with him.

You understand me too well.

Perhaps, if I never had it,

I wouldn't be afraid of losing it, right?

Perhaps staying by his side and having a secret crush on him is

the best relationship for us two.

You fool, a secret crush is a one-man show.

It's cruel to you and unfair to Pei Shangxuan.

Actually, liking someone and being liked by someone

are all a lucky thing.

You should bravely step forward and give yourself a chance

and give Pei Shangxuan a chance to choose.

It's too late now.

He already moved away.

I don't know where to look for him.

I can help you find him.

But you have to be mentally prepared.

This way. Pardon us, please move to the side.

Why did you bring me here?

I saw him here before.

This is too much, Pei Shangxuan.

He probably doesn't want to see us here.

Let's go.

I heard that Pei Shangxuan's family paid a huge amount of medicinal fees.

He wasn't willing to see anyone after he got out.

And recently he has been working at a bar.

It's all because of Han Yichen. She ruined Pei Shangxuan.

He's working in a bar?

He's destroying himself.

I believe that he's not going to continue living like this.

He just doesn't know how to face us yet.

I agree. Let's give him some time.

Time can heal scars.

That's true.

Let's put Pei Shangxuan's business to the side.

I have some big issue under my nose that can't wait any longer.

Li Li, I returned my dorm.

So come with me to a real estate agent later.

Or else I won't have a place to live the next few days.

Xiao Jun,

my head is full of Pei Shangxuan's business.

Also, I don't really know much about renting places. I won't be of much help.

How about... Daniel,

how about you go with Li Jun, okay?

- No, no. - I'm fine with that.

I don't want to. I don't want to. I'd rather go alone.

Do you know the difference between "One's Deposit and Three's Rent," and "Three's Deposit and One's Rent"?

What three? What one?

"One's Deposit and Three's Rent" is to pay one month's rent as deposit

and then pay your rent every three months. "Three's Deposit and One's Rent" is to use three month's rent

as deposit and then pay your rent every month.

Look, you don't even know such basic common knowledge.

If you're not careful while renting alone,

you might just end up happily throwing money at people.

Daniel is right.

I still have some business to attend to. I'm going first.

Daniel, take care of Xiao Jun.

- No problem. - Li Li.

This isn't good, Li Li. Li Li!

But I have a problem.

Come, look at our garden.

Look at these flowers and grass.

There's also this table! You can have high tea during times of boredom.

I'll even include the swing for you two,

so that you two can have a swing whenever you like.

Take a look at this newly renovated cupboard and gas cooker.

This is a stand alone bedroom.

There is even a changing room here. We also have

prepared the sofa and office desk especially.

Don't just think this place is small. This house

faces the south!

The room has good lighting, is well ventilated,

and is a great deal.

If you are satisfied with this house,

let's sign the contract now. You can move in immediately after.

Ms. Li, are you and your boyfriend satisfied?

Boyfriend?

Who told you that he is my boyfriend?

I wouldn't want to have such an immoral boyfriend.

I apologize. I misunderstood you two.

How am I immoral?

You're wrongly accusing me.

Wrongly accusing you? Are you saying that you saw Pei Shangxuan at the bar by coincidence?

He was working, but you? Were you there to work, too?

Correct. I was there to sing.

It was all for me to pursue my dream as a singer.

Your dream as a singer? You're too funny.

From what I think, you probably went there to pick up some girls.

But I think the two of you seem like a good match.

A good match?

Yeah, right. Next house.

Yes, the next house.

Come. I already said that it wasn't interesting. Let's go somewhere else that's fun.

- Where should we go? - Let's go sing.

Pei Shangxuan.

Li Li, congratulations. You were able to get into a top college.

Why do you keep avoiding me? Why aren't you contacting me?

Also, are you going to keep going like this?

What about it?

Pei Shangxuan, everyone is worried about you. Get yourself together!

Get what together?

Are you saying that I'm living terribly in your eyes?

That's not what I meant.

Our life has just started. We will have a better future.

I'm sorry, can you two wait for me for a second? I'll be back soon.

Li Li, to me, there's no point in repeating the course or retaking the exam now, understand?

I have a criminal record now.

Other than community colleges, no other college will accept me anymore.

The situation isn't as bad as you think it is. I already visited your family.

Your mother said your results have surpassed the undergraduate line.

- So you– - So what?

I know your life is great.

You were a top student and now you attend a prestigious university.

After you graduate, you'll become the top of society. I can already see all of this.

But what about me?

Tell me, how big of a mess am I in?

Do you not know or are you just speechless? Because I can tell you.

I'm young, have a criminal record, and haven't been to college.

What kind of official job would look for someone like me?

Anyone who sees me will look down on me in despise.

I am living this life by changing from one dark job to another.

That's how I live now.

Why are you talking about yourself like this? You will have a better future.

What future? Am I blind? Because I can't see it.

Li Li, the both of us are merely two lines that have once crossed.

We were friends in the past.

But now we have gone completely different ways,

never to return.

You don't need to come find me anymore.

Pei Shangxuan, do you still remember this?

Back then, you gave it to me as a present.

During my hardest times, this gave me courage.

Now, I will return it to you

and it can give you some courage, too,

so you can pull yourself together.

When I'm out competing on the soccer field, I always rely on this to protect me.

The German team's logo is etched on here.

It's an eagle, called the sun bird.

It will protect every brave warrior under the sky.

If that guy bullies you again, with its protection,

you'll win every battle and be filled with good luck.

From now on, it'll be your lucky charm.

Oh, please. You even believe such a childish thing?

You're a good student. A good student shouldn't come here.

Go back. We won't see each other again.

Sorry you two, let's go.

Let's go. Go, go, go.

- Is everything okay? - Yes, it's fine.

Go back to your own world.

- Let's go sing. - Who is she? - Don't mind her.

Li Li, you don't seem to be in a good mood.

Is everything okay?

I went to see Pei Shangxuan again.

But he insists on working at the pub.

I really don't know how to persuade him anymore.

Pei Shangxuan has his own reasons for becoming like this.

He can't bear to see his parents suffering from too much trouble,

so he went to look for a job as soon as he was let out.

But he's just running into a wall again and again.

He even said to me, apart from working at a bar,

what else can people like him do?

That's really bad.

So it turns out that Pei Shangxuan wants to repay the debt.

But that doesn't make sense. There are so many ways to make money.

As long as he can endure hardships, he can even be a delivery person.

But even if you work at a delivery company, they will still look into your background.

He must have really had troubles. That's why he chose to work at this place.

Are you saying that the bar is the only place for people with a criminal record to work at?

You boys are always like this, finding an excuse for everything.

Don't stereotype all men, okay?

We are talking about Pei Shangxuan, why are you suddenly blaming me?

- You– - Okay, okay.

Stop quarreling. Xiao Jun is right.

Why must you go to a bar to earn money?

Besides, his tone when talking

makes it distinct that he feels everyone is looking down on him,

and wants to draw a clean line between himself and everyone else.

If he really thinks this way,

I do have a solution.

Then I'll ask of you to come.

Thank you.

I'm finally done calling.

Mom, I promise to go to America with you.

He's leaving?

I will do my best to earn a scholarship, and I will work to earn money for a living.

You shouldn't worry too much about me.

Otherwise your significant other will have an objection.

He really loves his mother.

I never thought that there are times when he is understanding and considerate of other people.

- Pei Shangxuan! - Pei Shangxuan!

Pei Shangxuan!

How can you sleep? How did you end up like this? Get up.

Who is it?

Sun Yu?

Why did you come here?

I flew back from far away, from Guangzhou, just for you.

Our soccer team's hero, how did he end up like this?

Don't talk about bygone things with me.

Let's do it like this. We haven't seen each other for a long time anyway.

I currently work here. Come over this evening.

It's my treat. Don't return without getting drunk.

You still want to drink alcohol? I know a better place.

What place? I still have to work in the afternoon.

You're going to work everyday, but it's rare for brothers to gather.

Come on. Let's go somewhere else.

I won't go. Let me sleep first.

Come on.

Don't pull me. I don't want to go.

You guys called me out today to play soccer?

I still need to work. I don't have time to play with you guys.

Come back, Pei Shangxuan.

Since you already came to the soccer field,

let's use the ball to decide.

If you win, I'll let you go back.

Pei Shangxuan, isn't soccer your life? Why don't you play?

I told you clearly that I don't want to. Don't force me!

Besides living in a drunken stupor,

do you not have any other interests?

Let me tell you that you don't need to care about me.

Do you know what I was thinking while I was staring at the ball a while ago?

I thought I haven't played soccer for several months already, but why do I not want to play at all?

Let me tell you that I know it now.

What's the use of playing soccer?

I can be a star on the soccer field, but what am I when I leave the field?

You can become a CEO or a university student. What about me?

What kind of future do I have besides crawling in the dark?

Pei Shangxuan, we care about you and want to help you!

Why do you want to help me?

You feel uncomfortable because I'm living so miserably, is that it?!

Because we are friends!

Liars!

Pei Shangxuan, I'll never give up on you.

Li Li!

Li Li, get up.

Li Li, come on. Get up.

Mom and Mr. Liu will be away for a few days.

Take care of yourself and call me if something happens.

What's going on, Mom?

Your uncle...

borrowed money from someone for stocks and now he's in debt.

- He left to avoid the creditor. - What?

I need to look for him and bring him back.

Then I'll go with you.

Don't add to the trouble.

Just wait for me to come back. I made you breakfast, don't forget to eat it.

- Be careful, Mom! - Okay, bye!

Good morning.

What's up? You can't eat while facing me?

Don't worry. I'll go to America in a few days.

Your most hated thorn will be gone. Congratulations.

I never said that I hated you.

Moreover, I overheard you talking to your mom on the phone that day.

You can't let go of your mom, that's why you're going. Am I right?

You're overthinking it. I'm going for my own future.

Whatever.

Anyway, after you go to America,

don't forget to call Mr. Liu often. He cares about you a lot.

Don't worry. I'll take care well of Mr. Liu.

We're one family.

I'll leave my dad in your care while I'm not around.

Why didn't we meet somewhere to eat breakfast? I'm still not awake yet.

Why did you look for me so early in the morning?

You slept late yesterday? You went out again to drink?

So what if I go drinking?

It's my only interest.

Being drunk will help me forget all my worries.

Moreover, I can make money from it. What's so bad about it?

Sun Yu has to return to Guangzhou in a few days.

It wasn't easy for him to come here.

He said that he wants to play soccer with you again.

Does it look like I still can play soccer?

Don't you know how long I've been off the field for?

I don't have the necessary strength or speed anymore.

My ball sense is a joke. How can I be on the same level as you two?

The Pei Shangxuan I have in my memories is bursting with confidence!

No matter when, he always thinks he's the best.

Do you still remember when we did the penalty kicks?

I'd rather have your arrogance from back then,

than have your current listlessness.

What's wrong with my current condition?

I'm just different from you two.

You go to school from nine to five while I go to work from five to nine.

Sun Yu wanted me to tell you something.

Not everyone can get into a university.

He went to Guangzhou to make a living, but how can you just stay here and give up on yourself?

I'd rather have you guys remember the last game that we played together before graduation.

If time could stop, I would wish for it to stop there.

How is it? I have a good taste, right?

This house is really nice.

There are even two separate bedrooms.

The rent fee must be really high, right?

It's a bit expensive,

but I can just find a roommate

who can split the rent fee and utility bills with me.

Hopefully that person can cook, too. That way, my food problem can also be solved.

Why do I feel like you're looking for a boyfriend?

Those requirements aren't enough for a boyfriend.

He also has to be handsome, talented, and understand a woman's heart.

I suddenly thought of somebody who fits those requirements.

Who?

Daniel.

Nonsense! Don't mention him.

What's with you two?

What if somebody steals your luggage that you left out here?

Where did you come from?

Li Li said that you needed help in moving.

You are Li Li's best friend, so for her,

I'm willing to help.

Those words are quite loyal.

Oh, right. Li Li,

there's nothing else I can do about Pei Shangxuan.

I've persuaded and yelled at him all that I could.

Now, the decision is only left for him to make.

Nobody else can help.

So, Li Li,

I hope you can be mentally prepared for the outcome.

Cheers!

What are you doing? What's going on?

Why are you selling your alcohol onto my arm?

My shirt is so expensive.

You can't be so clumsy.

I'm sorry. I'll help you take it to the dry cleaners.

Pretty girl, how about this?

You don't need to pay for my shirt.

How about you come drink with me?

You drink one shot, and I'll also drink one. I'll pay for whatever we drink.

Clean this up.

Come on, pretty girl.

- Let's drink. - Sorry, excuse me.

- Let's drink. - Big Brother,

she's just an immature little girl. If you need anything, I'll do it.

What are you doing?

Are you trying to stop me? Are you trying to save the princess?

Go do whatever you need to do.

Big Brother, I apologize.

I'm in charge of selling the drinks here,

so if she did anything wrong,

I'm in charge. You want to punish her by drinking, right?

No problem. I'll drink as much as you want me to.

Okay. For me and her, we each drink one shot,

but for us two, I won't use that rule.

I understand. You drink one shot, and I'll drink three. Go get the alcohol.

Three shots aren't enough. Five shots!

I drink one, and you drink five. What do you think?

- No problem. - No wonder you're the boss; you're so generous.

- Okay. - Big Brother.

If our waitress displeased you in any way, please forgive her.

Not bad.

Big Brother, wait.

What just happened was our mistake,

so those five shots were my self-punishment.

You don't need to drink this one, and I'll drink five more.

You have a really good sense of justice.

Pei Shangxuan!

- Why are you here? - Who is she?

I'm telling you, you can't stop!

If you stop, you lose.

I won't stop.

Stop drinking!

Can't you see I'm in a competition right now?

Good!

Nice!

She's also drinking.

What are you doing, Li Li?

Big Brother, I'm sorry.

Goodbye.

- Let's go. - Hey, don't leave!

Why did you drink so much?

Haven't you abandoned all of your friends?

Why are you worrying about me?

Be careful of the stairs.

Mister, please stop.

Aren't you going to keep drinking? I'll drink with you. Let's go.

Let's go home!

Mister,

please send her to Jinqiao Road, Jinda Garden.

Li Li,

I'm not worth your kindness.

Tomorrow afternoon,

I'll wait for you in our old place by the lake.

If you don't come,

I won't leave.

Let's go.

You can leave now, Mister.

Qianren, thank you for your understanding.

I'll see you at the airport tomorrow, then.

Okay, see you tomorrow.

- Goodbye. - Bye-bye.

Young lady, wake up. You're home.

Hurry and wake up.

Give me the money.

Did you drink?

This is my first time drinking so much.

Why is it so bitter?

Let's go in first.

Don't just sit here. Get up.

We're almost there.

Why did you drink so much when you obviously can't?

Stand up, okay?

You're so heavy. Why'd you drink so much?

Lay down.

Don't leave.

I like you.

I like you.
