I've been in the Amazon for 21 days
by myself in wet season.
The challenges that I'm anticipating in this terrain
all have to do with the fact that we're here right in the middle of wet season.
This place is absolutely beautiful.
But it's so dangerous.
I'm at the gateway to the Amazon.
And it's the middle of monsoon season.
This is unknown terrain for me,
and I'm out here with a brand new survivalist.
Deep in the Colombian jungle,
two veteran survivalists, Gabby and Ky
will use their elite skills to help two fans
with little survival experience,
complete a 21-day challenge.
The adrenaline is pumping pretty hard core right now.
There could be a number of animals including big cats creeping up behind us.
This place is scary.
Everything wants to eat you including all the bugs.
It's a whole new territory.
This has potential for being the hardest challenge I've ever been on.
I'm a firm believer that women are amazing in these kind of situations
and I think this is our chance to prove it.
I'm just not sure anybody can survive here for 21 days.
Oh, my God!
Two strangers... Ah! Run! Go, go, go, go!
Oh, God!
No food...
Whoa!
No water...
Twenty-one days... Don't tap.
Die first.
Naked And Afraid.
I need my partner to have a good, strong mental attitude out here.
There's room for fear but there is no room for quitting.
Ten years ago, I was in the swamps in Louisiana.
I then did the first Naked and Afraid of Sharks
in The Bahamas...
...followed by 21 days alone in the Amazon.
Then I moved into Frozen in Montana.
Ky is a former Hollywood stunt performer
and mountaineering guide.
Her ability to persevere in the face of adversity is unmatched.
And she's an expert in trapping and bushcraft.
She starts with a Primitive Survival Rating or PSR
of 9.1.
My partner's brand new to this challenge.
Uh, that's probably one of the biggest draws to this challenge.
I'm... I'm very excited to work with another female.
My dad... He would be more excited than anyone
that I was out her e mentoring someone.
He taught me, you know, most of what I know about the survival world.
He actually passed away last year.
So I dedicate this challenge to my dad.
It's a mentorship challenge and... and he was my mentor.
I love coming out on these challenges
and I'm excited to back for another one, to be honest.
There's a lot of unknowns out here.
This is my first time in South America.
I've been in the Philippines,
I've been in South Africa,
and I've been in the United States twice.
This is nothing like that.
Gabby has survived in some of the harshest environments in the world.
She brings bushcraft and trapping skills
along with mental and physical toughness.
She starts with a PSR of 9.1.
Guess this is my stop.
Here we go.
This is the moment.
Here we go.
Wish me luck.
The sun is definitely beating down, so it is very hot.
I'm actually looking forward to a little bit of cloud cover,
and super stoked to be meeting my partner very soon.
I'm a middle school science teacher.
And I also own a Christmas tree farm
in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
My survival style is more of a gatherer, a scavenger.
I definitely know how to think outside of the box.
But this is definitely going to be the hardest thing that I've ever done.
My head is full of a lot of fear, anxiety,
but I've taught middle schoolers during the pandemic.
If I can do that, I can do anything.
As a teacher, Megan is an innovative thinker.
She is driven and great at problem solving,
but can be quick to lose her nerve.
She begins the challenge with a PSR of 5.1.
Hi.
-How are you? -No way! Oh, my God.
Are you kidding me?
-Oh, my God. -I'm Ky.
-I'm Megan. It's so nice to meet you. -Hi. Nice to meet you too.
- Oh, my God. This is surreal. - Welcome.
-Yeah. How're you feeling? -Oh, my God.
-You know, I'm really nervous. -Yeah, of course.
Well, it's absolutely natural.
I mean, you're about to do the craziest thing
you've probably ever done in your life.
Literally, the craziest thing.
-Yeah. -It's surreal.
Have the afraid part pretty well down.
- And the naked part, clearly. - Right.
I can't believe this. I'm like...
-Yeah. -I'm going to fangirl a little bit, but...
- Oh, really? So... - I might cry a little.
That's okay.
We all might cry a little bit over the next 21 days.
It's fine. I mean, I'm not gonna lie,
you've got one of the hardest locations,
one of the hardest times of year,
but I totally feel confident that we're gonna get out of this together in 21 days--
Awesome.
Off to meet my partner.
Terrified. Excited.
Every emotion that you can think of,
I am going through it right now.
I'm a former model.
I work for an airline as a project manager.
And I'm a mom, I'm a wife.
And I have an absolute love for the outdoors.
I'm not afraid of getting dirty.
I'm not afraid of getting uncomfortable.
I mean, you can have your nails done,
and get them dirty at the same time.
At home, I'm vegetarian 99% of the time.
And so, I think that there's definitely some challenges
to that part of being a survivalist.
I've seen so many amazing, strong women on these challenges,
and it really is my hope that I get to be
in that hall of fame with them too.
As a former model, Elise is often underestimated.
She is calm under pressure and a hard worker.
But her reluctance to eat meat could be her Achilles' heel.
She starts with a PSR of 5.2.
Oh, my God.
Hi!
Hey, I'm Gabby.
Hi, I'm Elise.
- Oh, my God. I know who you are. -This is...
So nice to meet you.
-Get in here. -Hi. Oh, it's so awesome.
-This is exciting. Yes. -This is exciting.
You've ever been in a terrain like this?
-I haven't. This is the first time for me. -Okay.
I've never been to South America myself.
It's a whole new terrain for me too.
You know, I can't wait to learn from you.
I feel like I've seen you, you know, doing some crazy things.
I hope that I can share some of the knowledge and experience that I have.
I love it.
I cannot believe that my partner is Gabby.
You know, hopefully, I can keep up.
'Cause she's a true badass.
And hope that I just don't let her down.
Well, I think I see our bags over here.
-Oh, awesome. -Should we go and see what we end up with?
Yeah. Absolutely.
-This one's yours. -Thank you.
All right.
Well, I've got my machete in here which I'm pretty excited about.
I got some paracord.
A handline, fishing line. And there's actually hooks in here as well.
-My handy, dandy pocket knife. -Excellent.
Each team has also been given a pot and fire starter,
as fire will be essential for boiling water
and keeping predators at bay.
All right, so before you look at the map,
I have a bit of information for you.
We are out here on a tribes mission.
-What? -Yes!
-So many surprises today. -I know.
I love Gabby. Gabby and I met on Frozen.
Oh, my gosh.
-That's awesome, Ky. -That's a victory.
Not only do I get to mentor a new survivalist,
I get to spend time with someone who's become like my sister.
So by the way, there's one more thing I have to tell you.
So, this is actually a tribes challenge.
-Oh, my goodness. This is so crazy. -Yeah.
-So it's another twist to it. -Yeah.
I really look up to Ky.
I think she is not only an outstanding survivalist,
but an awesome person.
And we're so excited to do this challenge together.
So, it's the very, very first all-female tribes Naked and Afraid.
-That's insane. -Yeah, it's brilliant.
For this all-female tribes challenge,
each pair of survivalists will be in two separate camps
about five miles apart for the first nine days.
On day ten, they will merge
and attempt to complete the challenge as one tribe.
Looks like there's a waterway, and that would be like, right over here.
And um, it looks like a great spot to set up camp.
-You ready for this? -I'm ready. Let's do it.
-All right. I think we're that way. -Okay.
Let's do it.
Looks like a set of caves or something with a water source there.
It could make for some good shelter too.
Especially in this, uh, in this wet season.
So, I reckon we should just get going.
-Absolutely. -Awesome. So it's this way.
All right. Very good. You lead the way.
Here in the jungle of San Jose Del Guaviare,
located just two degrees from the Equator,
the heat and humidity can be crushing.
The terrain changes rapidly
from dense forest to tall, grassy plains,
where one false step can mean a deadly bite from a fer-de-lance,
the most lethal snake on the continent.
The area is also known for its many ancient cave formations,
some of which contain tribal rock paintings
dating over 20,000 years old.
This monsoon season is like, is no joke down here.
No, right?
- It is real. It is real. -Yeah, this is...
-At least the rain's staying away right now. -Mmm-hmm.
For now. We know it's coming.
We know it's coming.
Lot of stuff here, look.
If we see it laying out dry.
We'll grab a bunch of tinders, as much as we see.
Before it starts raining like crazy.
Yeah. Before everything's wet.
Monsoon season in Colombia brings unpredictable rain showers
that can last from only moments up to days at a time,
bringing life-threatening flash flooding.
Shelter from the rain will be critical to survival here.
Vultures are circling already.
They're like, "They've got into that stage,
they've taken their clothes off."
"Any moment now we're gonna feast."
- They're ready for a meal. - Yeah.
What's your biggest concern out here?
Uh, probably dehydration.
-Freaks me out a little bit. -Yeah.
-Or a lot of it, I should say. -Yeah.
Um, hypothermia. Those are my two biggest concerns.
Right. Yeah.
Oh, boy.
Here it comes. Here it comes is right.
Oh, geez. This is less than ideal.
- It's not the best situation. - No.
Uh, I found really fresh water.
Holy cow! Look at that.
- This is amazing. - -This might be a great spot.
We have to be cognizant though, of flash flooding.
Okay.
-Um, so I wouldn't go too low. -Too, too far in here.
I'd love to find any cave, or overhang of some sort.
Don't really know how possible it is in the rain, but...
I know.
It's the only way we're gonna stay dry.
Oh, hey, look. There's a ton of cliffs over there.
Yeah. We may have to head to that direction.
- Let's go check it out. - Yeah.
I just am not seeing good shelter-building materials here.
Absolutely. It's so wet on the ground too.
Mmm. Like, with this kind of foliage, we'd need to build a debris shelter
and that would need like, three foot of foliage
before we, maybe, stop some of this rain.
Mmm.
I could see some rock formations over here.
Oh, yeah. Wow.
-That's awesome. -I think we're gonna need to shelter soon, anyway.
Yeah. I think you're totally right.
Megan and Ky are located in an area with large rock formations
that offer protection for wildlife such as bats,
armadillo and honeybees.
Never know what you're gonna get with, uh... rocks.
You could have amazing shelter, could house predators.
- Absolutely. - Could be some food sources.
I think, we're best to sort of, see what... what's inside here.
Yeah. I think that's a really smart idea.
Oh, wow. This is so different.
Wow.
- What a location. - Yeah.
Feel like there's definitely stuff in here we can use too.
Ooh, oh! Oh wow!
They're gonna be great for the mosquitoes.
Wow. Look over there.
Oh, my God.
- I mean, it's flat here. - Yeah.
How would you feel about here?
Yeah. I'd be down for that.
There's definitely enough space.
-Yeah. -Yeah. I kinda like this one.
-'Cause I feel like we're protected from everything. -Yeah.
Here, shelter's nailed.
Like, a waterproof shelter on the first night is amazing.
The biggest struggle here is gonna be food.
All right.
Anxiety's still little high.
But, um...
I feel kind of, overwhelmed with everything.
Um, like I don't really know where to start.
But I have a really good mentor.
But firewood is gonna be a challenge.
For sure.
Somethin' is better than nothin'.
Ah, there's a little river.
I think it's gonna be a fishing river.
But... It's definitely a good water source.
It looks like it's gonna flow.
- That's great. - Yeah. Not too far from camp.
Yeah.
Wonder how the other group are doing out here.
Yeah. Me too.
Five miles to the south,
Gabby and Elise are situated near a flowing river.
Here, thick jungle intertwines with a vast cave system,
which are home to vampire bats, small rodents,
and wild cats such as the ocelot and jaguar.
Gabby, I'm going in.
Oh, ho!
What is this?
- Oh, this is perfect. - Yeah.
- Oh, this is exactly what we need. - This... Yeah.
Wow.
- No. We're not going down there. - Yep. Told you that.
- Did you see one fly out? - Yeah. I sure did.
Oh, man.
- Cool. This is super cool. -Okay. This is great.
The ground does seem relatively dry...ish.
It's soft, dry.
For sure. It'll make a good night...
-Yeah. -Night or two temporary shelter.
-I like it. -Yeah. Let's do it.
- Till we can find something better. - Yeah.
This location, um, is a little less than ideal,
only because the water is so far away.
It's a really treacherous walk to get there.
Tomorrow, we'll continue exploring and try and find a spot
that's a little bit closer to the water,
and hopefully have some of the same advantages as this space.
So I think our next endeavor here before it gets too late
is to get a fire going.
You, uh, wanna do the honors?
Let's try.
Let's see.
I feel like, this is like, the intimidating part where it's like, "Oh, Lord."
Now put it a little bit lower.
And, rather than... Don't move your right hand at all.
If you have... If you have the striker in your right hand,
hold your striker very close to your tinder
-and then pull the other side back. -Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
We'll put this tinder back.
We've got fire.
Tomorrow we can get to a better location.
-Um, better shelter situation. -Yeah.
-It's not a bad scenario. -It's not. For now.
Night one. So far so good on our first night.
Yeah. Absolutely.
Not too buggy. Really no mosquitoes.
-So, we've really lucked out in this area. -Yeah.
And, if we can just keep this fire going, I think we should be good.
Yep. Absolutely.
Oh, it is getting dark.
I feel like it's already with my head a little bit.
-Yeah. -I don't know, could be just the night
but I'm like, urgh.
I'm feeling like I'm seeing things that are not there.
What's that?
Okay.
Yeah. That's all right.
Oh, my God.
I don't think I've ever done anything so scary in my life.
How are you feeling being able to sleep
on your first night out here?
- Better than good. Yeah. - Manageable?
-I think it's like, fear of the unknown. -Of course.
- It's morning. - The sun is rising.
Just waking up after my first night
sleeping in the Amazon.
Probably got about an hour tops, may be put together,
but it was a good night.
We stayed warm. We stayed dry.
That's really all that matters to me.
I am super proud of you.
I am kind of proud of myself, actually.
-Considering... Yeah. -Pushing through. Yeah.
It's one night but it's one night more than I've ever done before.
-So... -Right. And it's one of the hardest nights.
I really like Megan's vibe.
She seems excited but really honest about her fears, you know.
Out here, there's no room for false bravado
and I'd rather be working with someone
who's gonna let me know exactly where they stand.
I think we should start today, maybe doing a little bit more exploring.
Need to see what this area has to offer.
Sounds good.
Day two. We are planning today to find a new shelter
little bit closer to the resources.
Uh, we had a pretty good night last night.
So that reaffirms my thought that I wanna stay in the caves.
If at all possible, to try and find us a new cave
closer to the resources.
-All right. Let's get out of here. -Okay.
It think... I think we can do better.
It was a good first night, but I think we can do better.
- We can hit the river route from here. - Mmm-hmm.
And this is probably the best outcrop of rocks
that I see close to the river.
I think the shade will be nice too 'cause it is getting hot.
It's getting brutal hot.
-Feel the burn, right? -Yeah.
It's amazing how rapidly the ecosystem changes here.
It is crazy.
So we go from marsh hot wetlands to flat out jungle.
Oh, wow.
-This is huge. -This is huge.
What a cave!
"What a cave!" is right.
This is incredible.
Wow!
- I think this is great. - Yeah.
This looks like a pretty clear path.
- Get some water and fire work. - To get to our resources.
Look how closer we are from here.
Wow.
I'm happy that there are so many resources around.
There is palms, banana leaves.
Water is really close by which is a big thing.
- Uh, we just have to be really cognizant of... - Water.
This is definitely like a water path right here.
- It is. - So if the rains are here, we're gonna have to...
- We wanna stay on higher ground. - Yeah.
-We can make this work. -Okay.
- I like it. Okay. - Awesome.
All right. Let's go figure out what we need to get started for the day.
Slippery when wet.
So, looking at the land with an eye for resources.
Ooh, that looks like some sour cane up there.
Yes, Ky.
Our first bit of food out here.
Good news.
We have some sour cane in the region.
I've never tried it before but I know it is edible.
First bit of wild food out here.
How's it taste?
-Sour. -Yeah?
Hmm. Interesting.
-Want a bite? -Yeah.
-Hmm, it's pretty good. -Mmm.
-It's got a great taste. -Mmm-hmm.
And sometimes like, you don't need something in your tummy,
but just the idea that you're getting a different taste,
like, washing that, haven't brushed-my-teeth feeling
out of your mouth.
- Take the small wins out here. - Mmm-hmm.
-Sorry, Ky, if I got that on you. -You did.
- Um, let's keep going this way. - Okay.
- We know a little bit more of our area now. - Yes.
We got fire, we have shelter...
- Yes. - -There's no food around here.
- So... - Right. Let's...
Bit of an interesting location. Not a lot of resources.
Yeah. I mean, we are lucky enough to be close to some fresh water,
but otherwise, we haven't been lucky with food.
Found some sour cane and that's pretty much it.
Pretty wild storm is coming in,
probably our wildest, with the most wind,
howling at the moment.
It's about to start bucketing raining
and the wind is pushing it straight in our shelter.
We tried to stoke up the fire a bit.
But I think we're gonna have to retreat behind that ledge.
We are crouched here, behind this little rock ledge.
Trying to ride out this storm.
The wind is probably the most ferocious
in the direction we haven't had before.
And it's, um, pushing the rain right through the shelter.
It's chilly. This is definitely the biggest storm we have had out here.
And, uh...
I mean, I'm glad we've got somewhere to hide.
Everywhere else is gonna be pretty soaked.
But it is wild out there.
I don't think there's a dry spot in this cave right now.
- Mmm-hmm. - Yeah.
We have a little bit of a leak going on in the cave.
Uh-huh.
Uh, day's plan I think is, create ourselves an elevated platform here.
For the water that's like, actually just ground water,
it's kinda seeping around in the sand.
-We have plenty of materials out back. -Yeah.
Gabby and Elise will make their elevated platform bed
by forming a frame using Y-sticks and long branches.
Then horizontal support beams are added
before slats are laid over the top
to create the platform's foundation.
Nice.
-Get it. -Get it.
Okay.
Ooh!
-I'm getting bit real bad. -Uh-oh.
Right there, look at that mother trucker.
- He bite you? - Yeah. He bit the out of me.
- Look at that ant right there. You see him? - Yeah.
I think he's carrying a piece of my sole with him.
Holy crap!
- Oh, my God. Look at-- - He's trying to bite the...
- He's biting the knife. - The knife.
Ow!
- That was our last... The last slat for the bed. -That's last for today.
Ow!
Oh!
Something just bit me real... Oh, one of those ants.
Did you get to see him. Was it the same type?
- It was the same. Yeah. - Damn.
Yep.
Think I saw some like, deadwood down on the plain here.
- Okay. - Let's try that.
The problem with finding firewood in wet season
in this jungle environment is, if it's lying on the ground,
it's full of termites and soggy.
So we're gonna have to be targeting standing deadwood.
This is a good piece.
We'll put it in the... pile over by our...
um, other rock to give it time.
That sounds good.
Sorry. I am very uncoordinated right now for some reason.
Uh... Because you haven't eaten for four days.
I am not as oriented as I normally am.
It's the first day I'm feeling light-headed.
Okay.
My heart is racing a little bit faster than normal.
But I know this is temporary.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel, so...
I'm gonna push through.
-One day at a time, girl. -Yeah.
- Awesome. - Cool.
Now we're gonna build our frame.
All right.
We'll put one more cross number, maybe two more cross numbers in here.
And then we'll lay these sticks on here like this.
And then just hope to God that it'll hold our weight through the night.
Yeah.
Elise is a fantastic weaver.
And she's way better than I am.
So let her weave.
I'm a pretty good builder. Let me build.
It makes for a great team.
I feel like, you're just like superwoman.
She's got way more strength than I do.
- Yeah. - Should we try it?
Give it a try.
Okay. We're here and it's good. It's not bad.
- Thank you for your ingenuity. - Yeah. No worries.
That's what I'm here for.
I don't even know where the hell I'm going now.
Over here, Sweetie.
I'm really struggling.
- Are you all right? - Not good.
I think I just need one second.
Feeling a little faint.
My stomach is like, jacked up right now.
Just acid. I'll be fine.
We've been hauling firewood in a hot morning.
And if you don't know what it feels like
to put your body through this experience,
it can feel like you're dying.
Okay. I think I do need to take a beat.
Just lie down.
- Sorry, Ky. - No, there's only one more.
Little load left. You just, um, relax, please.
I don't like to just sit down and do nothing
when somebody else is working really hard, but...
I think I just need a minute.
Megan's really not doing well.
And I just think, if we could get some food in her stomach,
it might start to help her heal, even if it's just mental.
I think it's time to get serious about
making sure I can get something in her stomach.
You see this plant here?
The leaves look a lot like that jungle pineapple.
Look, ah, there's a few of them here.
I reckon this one's ripe.
Oh, it actually even smells like a pineapple.
This is a good win, even if it's just a mouthful.
Mentally,
might be the thing to get us through.
How're you doing?
Same.
Oh, I know you're probably not feeling up to it...
Oh, wow.
That's awesome.
You let me know when you wanna try a bit.
That's awesome. Okay. Thank you.
I don't want you to feel like you need to force anything down right now.
-So, you let me know when you think... -Thank you.
-You... -If you handed that to me yesterday.
I would have ate it in a second.
-I know. -I'm just gonna give it a little bit
to make sure nothing's coming back up
-'cause I definitely don't wanna waste that food. -Of course.
Oh, girl. You okay?
Oh, boy.
I think it's just acid, honestly.
Get some water in you to wash it out.
-Even if you have to... -I'm gonna hold off on a little bit, I think.
It hurts so bad.
That's the most you've thrown up, isn't it?
- I think so. - Oh, yeah.
I'm a little bit worried...
...about Megan at the moment.
She's really not doing so well.
She just can't hold any foods down.
And in, an environment like this...
Dehydration can get you in hours.
- Oh, really? - Mmm-hmm.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, girl.
Megan is not doing well at all.
She's pale,
her stomach cramps are there, more throwing up
and now she has diarrhea.
So, I've had stomach cramps all night long.
Um, I've been vomiting.
- She started getting diarrhea as well this morning. - -Mmm.
Uh, probably about three times, I've gone.
Okay.
This situation is... is not... is not good for her.
The source of Megan's declining health is unknown.
But because has been unable to retain any fluids for 24 hours,
and has a fever,
the medic determines she must leave the challenge to be treated at a hospital
and have further testing.
It's gonna be better for your health and wellbeing
that we get you out of here and get some proper care.
I understand.
So this is a medical tap out.
-I'm sorry, Ky. -No, don't apologize.
I really am so sorry.
You've been an amazing mentor to me.
I learned a lot from you in five days,
despite the fact that it's not the whole 21.
And I'm definitely going to carry that with me for a lifetime.
So thank you so much.
I'm really disappointed for her.
Uh, she had everything I could've wanted
with her survival attitude out here.
-Ky, thank you so much. -Recover well.
I got you. No worries.
Look after yourself.
You know, as a mentor, you never like to see
the person you're mentoring not achieve the goal.
And I'm trying not to look at this as a failure on my behalf.
But these challenges are real.
They're really hard on the body.
And you're in such a foreign environment
that anything can happen, and it did.
I didn't make it to day 21.
It's okay. I have to be okay with that.
Ky is the toughest person I've ever met.
And I know that she can make it and thrive
and sustain without me here.
Despite the fact that I'm letting my partner down,
this experience, I'm going to take with me
and cherish for the rest of my life.
Megan's deteriorating health
prevents her from completing the challenge.
Her PSR drops from 5.1
to 4.8.
Yeah. Five short days.
And, um... I'm back here on my own in the Amazon.
Well, you're a little fiesty one.
Luckily, that's a familiar experience for me.
I'd love to trap something, but it's so discouraging.
I think the only thing we could possible trap is the agouti.
Like those, like the mice almost.
Yeah, it's like a jungle rat.
Yeah.
- It's the morning of day five. - Feeling a little sluggish.
I know Elise is as well.
My body is trying to tell me something. I need some food.
I think... There's fruit on that palm.
It has orange fruits on it.
- You wanna go look? - Hmm. Let's do it.
We found it.
Look, this is a moriche fruit.
There's very little, actual meat to this fruit,
but it's kinda mango-like.
Um, you can see on the ground there
that animals have gnawed away at all the... the tasty bits,
and they leave the seeds there.
I think I might like, try and make a... a trap.
Something's obviously eating all the moriches.
There's, you know, 20 of them littered on the ground.
I would like to spend the morning showing Elise some trapping methods,
uh, to trap small rodents.
This is a good find today.
-Yeah, I agree. -Yeah.
When you bite it, it honestly tastes like you've got shells in your eggs.
-Like, I swear that's what it feels like. -It does.
-You ever set traps before? -Mmm-mmm.
Now, it wouldn't hurt to have a trap or two set there
for the animals that are eating the fruits.
I think what's going to be really hard for me is,
if there is some type of rodent that's cute.
We'll build the trap together.
And then once you catch 'em, you can kill and process,
I'll roast it.
I don't know if I can do any killing.
-You can do it. It'll be fine. -You know, I can't...
We'll call it dispatching. It's nicer if we say "dispatch."
My entire life growing up, it was always,
"You know, you don't hurt animals."
And I'm primarily vegetarian.
But I knew when I signed up for this challenge
that I would probably have to eat some things that I have never eaten before.
I mean, see that fishing line,
'cause we're gonna make arapuca trap.
- Okay. - Um...
We're gonna start with our longer sticks
and we're gonna feed it over here.
And keep it taut.
And you're gonna do the bottom one next.
- There. - Perfect.
Over and over until we have a pyramid.
An arapuca trap is made by intertwining sticks and cordage
to create a pyramid shape.
Once the trap is set with a trigger mechanism,
when an animal takes the bait, the trap will fall...
...capturing the prey.
And now, just that extra tightness
-kinda helps us. -Mmm-hmm.
Our trap feel a bit more firm.
-Cool. -Cool.
- So this trigger system with the string... - Mmm-hmm.
That is something that the Paiute Indians in America use.
So let's say we put the moriche fruit in here,
and this little guy comes in here,
-touches it... -Very cool.
And then he's trapped.
This trap has the potential to really change our lives out here.
We could definitely use some protein right now.
Uh, we found some fruit but we're lacking in the protein department.
Look at that. See the moriche fruit?
That thing will come down and capture our agouti for tomorrow.
Can't wait. All right, we're getting out of here.
See ya.
It's night five.
Am now I'm on a solo journey out here.
Five days before I join up with Gabby and her partner.
I've got my fire going, we've got a massive rainstorm.
I've gone and collected fresh rainwater.
Which is great time to snuggle in and start to sleep.
You'd definitely don't get a good night's sleep here
when you're on fire watch on your own.
But the surviving needs to go on
regardless of how many people are here.
So it'll be food, fire, water, shelter,
um, but double the effort.
We'll go in, we're gonna see if there's an animal in our trap.
-If it's a rat or larger, we're eating it. -Mmm-hmm.
I know we're malnourished.
It will make all the difference in the world
to have our first substantial source of protein.
Especially in these days, leading up to, um, merging with the other tribe out here.
Fingers crossed.
All right. The trap is sprung.
What!
Nothing inside. It does look like they took our bait, though.
Look. Looks they were probably able to get out this side.
Because, part of our trigger mechanism held the trap up a little bit.
And it doesn't help that the ground's very uneven here.
I mean, I'm disappointed but part of me is also like, "Phew!"
'Cause I didn't have to deal with killing any little animal that was in there.
Elise, I'm gonna need you to hold... come and hold this
as we set it again.
The bugs are destroying me right now.
Yeah. I'm right there with you.
- Same side? - Yeah. Just hold the right side up.
- Make them stop! - I know.
I'm getting eaten.
Yeah. Like...
I don't know if this is worth it.
All right. You know what, just bail on this. I'm not having a good time.
-Yeah. I agree. -Let's get out of here. Go, go, go, go!
Get... Get, get... It's not worth it.
They're... They make you crazy.
The irony is that, you know we're trying to catch food
and we became food.
- It's cool that it did spring the trap, though. - Mmm-hmm.
I don't tend to get challenges with much food.
This is probably the worst.
This is definitely turning into a starvation challenge.
Wow!
I was just out exploring this really cool gully here
to see if there were any resources out in the gully.
And I notice what looks like a fungus on the wall.
It's a stingless beehive.
If you look carefully, you can see little...
There, look.
Little bee is in that funnel.
Oop! Made its way out.
Now this is pretty exciting, because I know these bees don't sting and don't bite.
And I am familiar with their habits from having them in Australia.
But the fascinating thing is,
these ants here, developed this symbiosis.
when they're protecting the stingless bee's honey.
Ants with a bite like that,
should they manage to swarm all over my body,
they could send me into shock
with both the pain and the venom in their bite.
So what I will do is build a longer spear
to get into the sweet honey inside.
I reckon if I attached the machete
to the end of this stick,
then I'm going to have enough distance
to keep myself away from the ants
and yet still be able to break open the hive
and hopefully scoop some honey out.
I don't think I'm going to escape this one
without some...
pretty bad ant bites.
But at the moment, there's no food in this area.
And the reward of even a mouthful of honey would
be worth the risk.
Knock the ants to the ground
and then while they're going nuts down there,
try and scoop some honey out with the machete.
Hundreds of ants are coming out right now.
Just trying to make sure
none of them are crawling up my spear to me.
I thought there were hundreds in that nest,
but there are thousands and they are mad.
Wow.
Are you kidding me?
That is insane how many ants are living in there.
Got to dig deeper
to get to that hive.
The ants are fiercely protecting this honey.
Got to be honey in here somewhere.
Ooh. Oh.
Oh, my God.
Hmm.
Got to be honey in here somewhere.
Ooh. Oh.
Oh, my God.
Yes!
Mmm.
This is what I'm looking for.
This...
is honey.
Oh, my God.
The best thing...
I have tasted out here.
Even that mouthful...
I can't even describe it.
It's like...
peachy honey.
Wow.
I guess they're tiny little bees.
'Cause there's not a lot of honey.
All right, that's probably the last of the honey.
That was a success.
Good morning.
Good morning. Today's a big day for us.
Um, we're relaxing today
because tomorrow's our big merge.
We're excited to meet this mysterious other group
that's out here.
I know. It's weird.
It's kind of like an end of an era.
It is. It is a little bit.
I'm a little bit nervous to see the team dynamic.
I mean, Gabby and I have such a great dynamic.
I really don't want that to change.
But hopefully we can learn some tricks from them.
I'm really hoping that the area isn't mosquito-filled.
That's my number one.
Please don't be mosquito-filled.
It's like a toss-up
whether I had less food on this one
-or less food in Africa. -Hmm.
This might be the hardest environment
I've ever done a challenge in.
I don't know that this is sustainable
for the next, you know, 10 or 11 days.
It's gonna be... It's going to be tough to get by
if we don't find more protein or more food out here.
Never really had to "Starve" starve quite like this.
I've been struggling with this fire for hours.
And then suddenly I hear something
run around my camp.
No way I can catch it in the middle of the night.
I mean, it's pitch black.
But it's good to know there's food out here
running around.
All right, you ready to get out of here?
- This is it. - All right.
Goodbye, cave.
See you. It was good while it lasted.
Yeah.
Today is Merge day
and Elise is in for a big surprise today.
She has no idea that Ky is out here.
And I'm just really excited to see
what all four of us can do together.
-Let's figure out where we're going today. -Okay.
- Okay. This is where we are now. - Mm-hmm.
And it looks due west.
That's where we're going to find a river.
Hopefully two more humans.
Two more people.
Hopefully.
- I'm a little nervous about this hike. - -Are you?
-Mm-hmm. -We're going to be fine.
Slow and in control.
All right. Game on. Let's do this.
Let's get it.
To reach the merge point at the river,
each team must hike four miles,
traversing the thick, marshy grassland
that will leave them vulnerable
to the deadly fer-de-lance
that frequents this terrain during the heat of the day.
I'm excited to see if we get more resources
down at the merge point.
But to me, there's not a lot of shelters
that you could build out here
with the materials that we have
to withstand these kind of torrential rains.
So I'm wondering if I'm going to...
talk them into coming back up to these caves.
That seems to be the best option.
Means a longer hike on extraction day,
but the payoff is...
ten days of less misery for us.
So I'm going to do a quick lap of my pineapple plantations
to see if any are ripe to take with me for the merge.
I think that would be a nice treat
if they don't have pineapples where they are.
Oh, there's another one in here.
Then I managed to find a few that are perfectly ripe.
So it looks like I'll be able to take a treat.
I'm really excited to head off
into the next phase of the journey.
Time to put out my fire and get out of here.
I'm really excited to see Gabby
and I'm also excited to meet her new partner.
I mean, I'm not the mentor to Gabby's partner,
but I've got all this knowledge
that I'd love to share as well.
- Ooh, sun's starting to beat down. - Mm-hmm.
Snake time.
-Be careful in these overhangs. -Okay.
- They're a nice place for a snake to hide. - Okay.
- So just kind of take a step out from them. - Okay.
We're descending into the valley,
-hopefully where the river is. -Mm-hmm.
Um, a little bit of a tough walk so far. What do you think, Elise?
Yeah, it's a different terrain on our feet
than what I feel like
you and I have been kind of used to the last while.
Yeah.
Mm, extra rocky.
Based on these elevation changes,
the water must rush down this hill.
I mean, we'll be in serious trouble
-if a flash flood were to come down this place. -Yeah.
Definitely feels like there's a rainstorm coming in.
I think shelter is probably the biggest thing
that's playing on my mind right now.
Rain is something that can put you
right out of the challenge.
As I come down into the valley here,
uh, the vegetation's getting thicker.
It's harder to find a path.
Having to take it way more slowly.
But I can hear the river, so I must be getting close.
- Do you hear that? - Mm-hmm.
-Is that a voice? -I heard a voice.
You guys ready?
Oh, my God!
You guys ready?
Oh, my God.
This looks like a familiar person.
Gabby!
Hello!
It's definitely an exhausting hike down.
I look up and there's another woman crossing.
I immediately recognize Ky.
I mean, she is kind of a legend around here.
You're alone!
I've been so excited for this moment.
Party of one here, I'm afraid.
Where's your partner?
- Med tap. - Really?
Yeah, watch out. That's really slippery, okay?
Unfortunately, there was only one person
who was crossing the river to meet us.
But you know, it was so empowering
to see another woman in the same situation.
-So nice to meet you. I'm Elise. -I'm Ky.
-Hi, Elise. -Hi, are you a hugger?
-Yeah, sure. You know we're all huggers here. -Oh, come in here.
And you, girl.
Oh, my God.
-So good to see you. -I'm so glad to see you, too.
- Yeah. - I did bring you a present.
- You got one, too. Have you tried them yet? -Aww.
- Yeah. - Oh, my gosh.
We've only found one out here and it is so good.
It's so amazing to see Gabby again.
I believe that women together are stronger
and she and I most definitely smashed
the Frozen challenge together.
I think we got something here...
...coming to the surface.
Yeah!
Gabby! Woo!
This was our last key to the puzzle.
- You did good, Ky. - You did real good.
It is nice to see there's a mentee
still in the mentor challenge
and I'm looking forward to getting to know her.
- Congratulations! - Thank you!
You're amazing!
- She's halfway there, right? - Right.
But in some of the hardest conditions
that you can exist in in this like,
...in this world, honestly.
You know, I was thinking--
- Mm-hmm. - ...I know that the original sort of idea was
that we make a shelter here,
but I don't trust this weather.
-I know. -I'm thinking that we go back
to either my shelter or your shelter
and ride out the rest of the challenge there.
It'll mean, like, a little bit of an extra hike
-on extraction day-- -Sure.
...but we're saving calories
not having to build a waterproof shelter
-for the three of us. -Mmm.
-Oh, yeah. I definitely don't want to build a shelter-- -I agree.
...and there's no caves on the map in this area.
Plus, I mean...
what happens if it rains?
- Mmm. - Like, if we get one of these monsoon rains,
like, who knows how high this river gets?
So this probably is not the best location for us.
I think we'd be better off up the hill.
Okay.
I guess it's just weighing up
who's got what at what cave.
-I'm in an archway. -Oh.
- What was yours? - We were in a cave.
-Cave? A good one? -Yeah.
Our cave is decent, Ky.
Like, we can make three work.
We're just gonna be sardines in there.
What do you guys think?
I think we should probably head to yours.
Yeah, I don't think it looks safe here.
Yep, that's the feeling. I think we should go for it.
Let's go.
Look, there are no great options here,
but at least our cave is on higher ground than Ky's
and it provides some protection
from the wind and the rain.
There's just nothing here to build a shelter with
and we'd be in real trouble should a flash flood happen.
In survival situations, you need to pivot.
I look forward to learning
the... problems and solutions
you've put together with your camp.
That's the same thing we were thinking,
was, like, we're looking forward to seeing
what worked for you guys.
We were really hoping to, like, good firewood--
- Mm-hmm. - ...a better technique than we were coming up with.
So you see that dead tree at the top?
- Yeah. - That's our cave.
I'm sad your partner had to tap out, though.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
I was disappointed.
Yeah.
Like, if you were on a mentor challenge without a mentee.
Of course.
You know, I really look up to Ky
and she has way more experience in this than I do.
I look at her as kind of a mentor.
So it's like a mentee, a mentor-mentee and a mentor.
And I think Elise is excited to learn from Ky, genuinely.
This is super cute.
- Oh. - It's a mess--
- ...from the outside. - -I apologize in advance
for the mess, but...
Well, you didn't know you were having visitors.
Wow.
Hmm.
That rain was vicious in there.
That was the worst night we've maybe had.
Thank God for this cave.
Got a nasty storm rolling in.
Would you guys be up
for maybe trying to put a little roof
on the bed platform?
- Yeah, absolutely. - Yeah.
I'm in my, like, don't-pass-out mode right now.
Yeah, don't pass out.
Let that water sink in.
We're going to get wet as in a minute.
- Yeah. - -And it's going to be cold
- and hard to dry out. - Yeah.
- Here it comes. - Yeah.
I'm making a canopy over our shelter for tonight.
Um, the rain pours in when it's a bad storm.
And we're trying to avoid
being soaking wet at night with the cool breeze.
So our idea is to take the fronds and layer this top.
It's a little bit of a shelter within a shelter.
And we'll still, you know, cover ourselves
in fronds as well,
but, uh, we'll have both a wind block
and a rain block.
This cave roof leaks like...
someone's put a hose down every hole.
Yes.
Last night was cold and rainy
but we cuddled up and stayed warm and dry
under our cabana roof.
So the plans for today is to find food out here,
because I have, in the back of my mind,
a little worry about the scarcity of resources out here.
Oh, you see any berry patches up in here?
Anything?
Any Oreos or peanut butter?
Literally anything.
Feeling good? Oh! Snake, snake, snake.
What type? That looked like an adder head.
- Don't go in where you can't see your feet. - -No.
Uh, he's non-venomous.
- You sure? - I'm positive.
I'm going to flip it right here.
-All right. Okay, so take a few steps. -Move out.
-Yeah, I got my machete. -You want to eat him, right?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, look at him shaking his tail.
Jesus!
Okay, you got him.
Feeling good? Oh! Snake, snake, snake.
Oh, look at him shaking his tail.
Jesus!
- Okay, you got him. - I got him.
- He's pinned. Not for long. - All right. No, he's not.
- This stick is not good. - -All right.
- I can't see his head yet. - All right.
Um... Do we have a better stick?
- Do you want me to grab his tail? - No. No.
Oh, you're going to have to.-.
- He was eating a lizard. - -He was eating a lizard.
Oh, man!
We could've had lizard and snake!
This is why we don't use this for the snake stick, huh?
Yeah.
Lesson learned.
Snake? Yeah, I'm a little disappointed
about that whole situation.
Um, retrospect, I probably should have
just grabbed the thing and taken the chance on it.
Nice work, Gabs.
Um, it would have been way better work had we got him.
It was a little frustrating to have something so close
I could almost taste, slip away like that.
Um, I try and stay positive
and think there's always tomorrow,
but that one definitely stung a bit.
Stupid thing.
What a bummer.
Hey, Gabby, is that a sour cane right there?
- Yeah. - To the left.
- It's a couple of them. - -Yeah.
- See the red? - Oh, wow! Yeah.
Awesome.
Should we just chop one and then share it?
- I think that's a good idea. - -Yeah.
We can come back for another tomorrow if we...
If you hold it up,
you can squeeze the water out of it.
Just bend it a little bit.
What's it taste like?
- It's sort of sappy water. - Yeah.
-Yeah. -It's actually pretty good.
Has a little floral taste to it.
- It's nice. - Yeah.
And you can, like, squeeze it.
Yeah.
Should we go back and sit?
Yeah, let's go sit and enjoy it.
All right.
Exciting morning.
Elise spotted some sour cane on the path,
and we're getting ready to try it.
She's cutting it down into threes, and... here we go.
We're going to try it.
Well, it's not as sour as the last ones that we had.
- This one is not as sour, no. - No.
How does it feel to be sucking on something?
It's delicious.
Any food score is a good day here.
You might be able to help us trap a little bit,
'cause that's more your specialty than ours.
Yeah, for sure.
We've tried arapuca--
- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah! - With rock top.
Paracord helps with the arapuca.
Ky is a master trapper,
so I really look forward to our use of the cordage
that she brought with her to improve our arapuca trap
and improve our chances of hunting.
It would be a absolute game changer
to actually nail some protein.
Something I find on these, like, last week is
- your problem-solving capacity really diminishes. - -Mm-hmm.
But you can look at something for ages
and you're like, "I'm pretty sure I knew how to do this once,
and... now I don't."
It is a little bit easier
to build an arapuca trap with paracord
that allows you to get great tension on it.
If we can make it heavy enough on top,
then the critter can't crawl out underneath either
and can't burrow.
Placing it on hard ground and using the paracord are
probably two key differences I did with this trap.
I think that I'm going to bait it with moriche.
I have one in my bag.
Okay.
And you put it near that.
As soon as it steps on that, it's done.
This is looking good.
It would be incredible
if we can catch something in that arapuca trap.
I would be beside myself if we were able to snag a bird
or an agouti or something out here.
Because I do think there's a chance
that Elise won't make it out of here on day 21
if we cannot procure some type of food.
She's looking...
pretty thin, and I'm worried about her.
Did you want to come check the trap in a sec, Gab?
Yeah, I'm coming.
You know, every time you stand up,
you almost fall down.
It's hard to find words.
It really is coming to the critical point
in this challenge.
Me being mainly carnivore,
my body's definitely feeling the lack right now.
Let's go check this trap.
You never know, there might be
a pineapple-eating agouti in here.
I've seen agouti out here, so I'm not losing hope
that we might get something in that trap.
The trap's sprung.
Jesus, the trap's sprung! Come on!
- Oh! - Oh
The trap's sprung.
Jesus, the trap's sprung! Come on!
- Oh! - Oh Suddenly, I see this armadillo shoot
right out of the trap towards me.
I know this is my only chance for food.
- It's an armadillo. - Yeah.
- Ready? I'll get him. - Here.
I almost had hands on it.
- I'm going to grab his little tail, okay? - -Surround it.
- I can get him. I can get his tail. -All right, right here.
- You got it? - I got him.
Okay, I've got my machete.
All right, you pull him out.
He's not loving me.
- Are you going to get him? - Yeah.
I'm just going to stab him.
- You got him? -Yeah, I got him. I'm tight on him.
- I'm tight on him. - -What do you need me to help?
No, I can pull. I can pull.
Let's pull him out.
Oh, he's holding on.
All right.
Ready?
Oh, I'mma bite ya.
- You got him? - I've got the-- -I got his tail.
I got two hands.
-I'm good. Yep, yep. -Watch yourself.
Holy That thing's a freaking monster.
Wow!
Holy moly.
The whole thing was just intense
and really quick to happen.
I'm so sorry, Elise.
I'm sorry you had to see that.
At the end of the day, we walk out with a giant,
giant armadillo.
This means a lot to us.
We are eating tonight!
That's the first time I've spring-tackled
an armadillo in an Amazonian jungle.
'Cause he wasn't going to get past us.
Nuh-uh.
Wow, he destroyed that trap.
I think another minute later and we wouldn't have got him.
The trap didn't really last.
You know, not fault of the trap.
It was just a really large animal
to get caught in there.
Nice!
Buddy work.
Teamwork, girl.
- Let's process him away from camp. - -For sure.
Yeah. Take him out there.
It is amazing, finally, to have a win.
Elise, you want to go with her, gut and skin?
Um, I might have to watch, if that's okay.
So you're going to be part of a new learning process for me, too.
It is a very overwhelming process.
Yeah. Well, you let me know if it's too much, okay?
Okay.
We have a massive rainstorm coming in
and we're going to have to cook it over a small fire
in the cave.
I take Elise out with me to learn how to gut an animal.
Like, that's just meat here now, you know?
I know it's hard.
She's doing amazing.
I know this is not her thing.
She's vegetarian.
She loves animals.
I mean, I love animals too, but this is food.
-There's a lot of meat in here. -Mm-hmm.
I'm collecting some wood
so we can get a quick fire going before the rain hits.
I'm just going to wash him off.
Hopefully we can get this armadillo cooked
and smoked and...
in our stomachs.
You're doing really well.
I know it's hard.
Oh, my gosh, ladies.
I was afraid you guys were going to get soaked.
hell.
It is cold and wet.
Oh, my gosh.
Sorry I'm not much more help
when it comes to processing and doing.
Oh, I mean, I can't believe it.
It's not like it's your first animal.
Elise, how are you feeling about eating an armadillo?
I mean, there's no hunters in my family.
- Of course. Yeah. - There's no, you know,
there was never-- Like 90% of my family is
completely vegetarian or vegan.
And thank you for being patient with me.
Being patient with what?
There's no patience required.
It's your first kill.
You okay?
Right now, I just...
need a few minutes.
Uh, this is the first time
that I've ever seen anybody kill anything.
Um, you know, I... I'm usually pretty good at, like,
separating all the things,
but, uh, this one was hard for me.
I just wish we had time to get bed fronds, but...
I know.
I'd rather have a happy tummy.
A hug with a full tummy tonight.
I've been vegetarian on and off since I was 10.
So...
So it's big.
I think he's cooked through.
Yeah, I think so too.
I think we'll wait for Elise and then have a bit of a...
an "eat" moment.
I also haven't slept properly or eaten in 15 days.
I'm probably just a mess right now, in general,
but yeah.
How you doing, girl?
Doing all right?
You ready to give this a try?
Sure.
Ky has a skewer ready to go.
- She's going to bring it out for us, okay? - Okay.
But I came here knowing that I was
going to challenge myself
and... this might be the biggest challenge for me
out of it all.
- It's a bit gamey yeah? I thought. -Mm-hmm.
Yeah, a bit gamey.
Not like chicken.
Just take your time.
Okay.
On skewer, I can definitely taste
armadillo in my meat, and it's not nice.
She's either going to be able to eat it, or she's not.
But this is her challenge and her choice,
and I cannot force her into it.
-All right, tried it... -Ooh.
-You okay? -Mm-hmm.
Not my favorite.
You can't do it?
It's just not my favorite.
It's all good.
You want to take it slowly,
or you just don't want to try it at all?
Uh, I tried it.
You think you might try it in a stew,
where it's a little softer?
Maybe.
Okay.
All right. We'll get you through this challenge,
regardless of whether you eat this thing or not, okay?
Mm-hmm. Yep.
You're with us to the end, all right?
Doesn't matter.
You don't have to eat meat to be a survivalist.
-You know? -I know.
You know? So it's okay.
Especially not an armadillo.
It's an acquired taste.
It's not my favorite first introduction
- back into the meat world. - No.
A little salt would go a long way.
Or like a sauce.
Some sauce?
Some ranch?
Yeah.
Right now it's really tough.
- Very steak-like, you know? - Yeah.
You know, try again if you feel up to it,
and if not, that's okay too.
I think I'll be okay.
We'll find you some more pineapples, I promise.
Day 16.
Mm-hmm.
- This is only day 14. - Hah.
Mm-hmm. Don't play those games with me.
Don't joke.
I feel amazing.
I feel ready to knock out
these last few days of this challenge
because I just had a belly full of protein.
Elise, what can we do to make
these last couple of days better for you out here?
I'm good.
I know, but what could be better?
More pineapple.
More pineapple?
I can do that for you.
What if we trapped a bird?
Do you think you'd eat a bird?
No, don't.
I'm fine.
We know that. We know you're fine.
But it would be nice to have
a nice little send-off win for you.
Take only what you need and we have enough.
And it's my choice and I don't need anything more.
I feel bad because I, as a mentor,
have not provided her with an alternate protein source.
One, two, three.
I need your shoulder.
Yeah, yeah. Just stand for a sec.
You're okay. You're okay.
You're okay. You're okay. Stand up.
Stand up. You're okay.
Hey, Ky.
Ky.
Bring some water out, please.
- Ky? - Yeah?
Water, now.
Here's some charcoal if you want to brush your teeth.
- Do you mind if I dip in yours? - Mm-mm.
-That's what it's there for. -Ooh, bingo.
Charcoal's actually in
like a lot of natural toothpaste and stuff.
While you've got that, um, fuzzy bit of the sour cane
just to like, brush over your teeth.
Charcoal also has this, um...
property where it binds to toxins.
So anytime you're feeling a bit sick out here,
you can chew on a bit of charcoal
and hopefully it'll grab onto those toxins
and eliminate them without poisoning your body.
Yeah.
But I also find it, like, gives you that shiny bright
once you get the charcoal out of your teeth.
If anything, my teeth just feel better.
You're okay. You're okay. You're okay. You're okay.
Stand up. Stand up. You're okay.
Hey, Ky?
Ky?
Bring some water out, please.
- Ky? - Yeah?
Water, now.
-You okay? -Good.
Yeah, I got it together.
- You got it? - Thank you.
You're very welcome.
- Here we go. - You want to sit back down?
No, Need to go inside, -out of the sun. -Are you sure?
-Yep. -Okay.
- Thank you. - What's that?
Um, I had a little passy-outy moment
where I was dreaming.
Come back up in the cool.
She easily could have went down
and hit those rocks, and...
who knows, that could have
ended her challenge or worse.
- Thank you for holding my hand. - -You okay?
I'm so glad I was there!
You're not allowed to stand up anymore.
Um, we should get her some water.
The human body can only go so far without food.
And Elise is hitting that wall.
And it's scary for me
because who knows when it's going to happen again
and whether I'll be there to catch her next time.
I'm not going home.
Of course you're not!
I'm not going home.
I definitely do not fault her one bit
for not wanting to eat animals.
But she's at a very low point right now,
and she needs protein
to get through the rest of this challenge.
Due to Elise's fainting spell,
medics are called in to evaluate her.
All right.
Do you feel something like dizziness or anything?
Only when I stand up.
You feel like you can't see anything?
It just-- it's, like, when you stand up and then--
I get up too quickly and all of a sudden it's like
-Okay. -And then...
- Mm-hmm. Yeah. - Okay.
Okay.
Poor Elise.
No, I'm fine.
Here's the stew.
It does look delicious.
We have it on a slow simmer.
Hopefully, we really, really tenderize this meat.
I may try another piece after this.
I think it was just a lot for me to process for today.
You know what? There's always tomorrow.
Yeah.
Elise, what's for breakfast this morning?
Armadillo.
Armadillo.
She's doing so good.
Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside.
I'm not a firm believer
that you need animal products to survive.
But in a survival situation,
I'm going to tell you that...
you need something.
Because yesterday freaked me out,
and I want to make it until day 21
and I also want to go home healthy.
Look, we're proud of you
for eating that beef stew this morning.
I'm just happy to be here with you both
and...
...equally as happy to know that we're done tomorrow.
Yeah.
Awful day 20 afternoon.
Torrential rains.
Our cave was leaking for the first time in days.
In less than 12 hours,
we're gonna be up and ready to...
...conquer.
Conquer the extraction walk.
Gather our goods.
- Yeah. - And look from that, I think.
- Sounds good. - Right?
- Day... - Twenty one.
- Twenty one. - Yay, we made it.
Let's do this thing.
Day 21, we're getting ready to walk out of this place,
and I am beyond excited.
It's been a wild ride.
Thank you, Colombia,
for everything that you've provided for us,
and for the hard times, too.
Sometimes those hardest times are
what make you a better person.
I can't wait to cross the finish line
with Elise and Ky
and kind of pass that torch to Elise.
Okay.
Should we check these maps out?
Let's take a look.
So right now we're here.
-Yeah. -And we have to get
to our extraction point here.
It looks like it would be a more direct route
if we just kind of go that direction.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
And try and find the river that way.
Okay.
Let's do it.
All right.
See you, cave.
Bye, cave.
I am so excited to get the heck out of there,
but I'm also nervous
because I don't know how long this hike's going to be.
I don't know how arduous it's going to be.
We're only two degrees away from the equator,
and it gets flipping hot.
There's still a risk of me, you know,
collapsing due to heat exhaustion
and lack of everything in my body.
After 21 days, enduring starvation,
mosquitoes, and torrential storms,
Ky, Gabby, and Elise must hike an eight-mile gauntlet
across the jungle and over twisting rivers.
To reach their extraction point,
they'll need to navigate a treacherous descent
while watching out for venomous fer-de-lance snakes
lurking in the high grass.
This is some tall grass.
Yep.
Don't go too fast. You'll lose me in here.
We ain't losing you, Gabby!
Be careful,
'cause fer-de-lance don't care if it's day one or day 21.
We had rain and cold temperatures last night,
so the snakes are going to be out and about
sunning themselves to warm up.
And they love this grass.
Just to let you all know,
if I get bit by a fer-de-lance here--
- Yeah. - ...I'm still walking to extraction vehicle.
Can we carry you?
Ah, sure, but you know what?
As long as it's not a med tap.
Same.
That sun is hot.
It is something.
It is hot.
We're not really used to these hills either, are we?
- No. - No.
I can hear the river.
Can you?
Oh, God.
Ooh.
It's exhausting,
wondering where you have to put your next footstep.
It is.
Whether it's a life or death situation.
The minutes count out here.
We're all very tired.
My legs are tired.
- You got it, Elise. - I know.
Ever since Elise fainted,
I've had in the back of my mind
that it can happen at any time.
This isn't over yet.
So it looks like we're probably coming into it
maybe down here.
I reckon-- you can see where the vegetation gets
- taller and thicker and greener-- - Yeah.
- I see that. - ...I reckon it's just there.
Ky, we're following you down.
Please watch your step.
These rocks are awful.
- This part is super slippery. - -Yeah.
I find leaning uphill a little bit helps.
At least you'll have less far to fall.
Watch yourself.
Holy crap.
Keep on trucking.
Yeah.
Don't let the mosquitoes know we're here.
To look back and think about everything we've been through
over the last 21 days, three weeks is a long time
when you're starving, and you're cold, and you're wet,
and you're living moment to moment in the bush,
it's hard to believe that it's finally happening.
I mean, this feels like the right place.
I hope it is.
I can hear something!
You hear that?
This is it!
Oh, girls.
We did it!
We all did.
Come here.
I'm so beyond excited
to see the extraction vehicle pull up.
It's hard to quantify.
Yeah!
I can feel the tears starting to pool in my eyes,
and just knowing
that I'm going to see my family so soon.
Get in first.
Pride of place.
Do the honors.
No more walking all over this stuff.
Foot on, girls.
Woo!
Here we go.
All right. We're done!
I've just achieved something incredible.
I've pushed my body and mind as hard as I could
'cause the Amazon in wet season,
probably one of the hardest challenges you could get.
Amazing!
After surviving nearly half the challenge alone
Ky finishes strong, shedding 18 pounds in the process.
Her survival rating rises from 9.1
to 9.4.
So glad to have you two out there.
- That was so good. - Yeah.
For us, it's an emotional moment.
And Ky and Gabby became not only mentors,
but friends throughout this entire process.
And for all the people who have doubted me
and thought that I'm just a pretty face,
I really hope that this shows you
that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover,
because everybody has so many more chapters.
If you didn't think that I could do it,
this is living proof that I can.
Elise's positive attitude
and willingness to learn helped her complete the challenge.
Having lost 20 pounds, her survival rating soars
from 5.2
to 7.5.
I slept in a cave for 21 nights, naked!
-Elise, I'm in awe of you. -Yeah.
I'm in awe that you walked out of here
and that you have been as strong as you have been
this whole time.
I've learned that I am patient and calm and kind.
And even in the most dire of circumstances,
I think I was able to support my mentee
and keep her on the right path.
Gabby's strength
and dedication to her mentee helped power her
through the finish.
20 pounds lighter,
her primitive survival rating swells from 9.1 to 9.4.
I'd like to dedicate this challenge to my dad.
He was just the most amazing human.
And he... he'd be so proud right now.
He loved his little girl.
