Original subtitles

Oh, I see him.

He's over here at the end of this little island.

Right there.

I wanna try and handfish this croc.

I'm fixing to get in the water and go after him.

Oh, my God.

Man, I'm excited.

I can see tons of animals.

It looks like the game is plentiful

and it just makes me hungry.

I'm a general contractor for money,

but I'm a hunter for life.

I'm just not sure anybody can survive here

for 21 days.

All right, guys.

Two strangers... Ha! Run, go, go, go, go.

Oh, God.

no food...

no water.

Twenty-one days.

Don't tap.

Die first.

Naked and Afraid.

I'm excited to be here in Africa.

This is definitely a very harsh environment,

but I've been studying a lot of the plant life here

and I'm planning on harvesting food for us.

I grew up on a homestead

and we were on fruits and vegetables year-round

and it's always been a passion of mine.

I'm definitely more of a gatherer than a hunter.

I'm just ready to dive right in.

Man, the terrain is super crazy.

It's a lot like Texas.

It's dry, it's arid.

But at the same time,

you know, we don't have big game animals

runnin' around that could hurt you.

Hunter Cole and Gatherer Shell

will attempt to survive 21 days

deep in the South African bushveld,

a rugged terrain where dense brush

provides cover to leopards and venomous snakes.

The region's freshwater sources

are home to aggressive Nile crocodiles,

who's jaws deliver a bite force of 5,000 pounds

per square inch during an attack.

I'm excited to meet my partner and I look forward

to bonding with my local environment here

and just becoming one with Africa.

I'm here really for the spiritual journey

to experience extreme hunger, extreme thirst,

extreme everything, and to see what lies deep down.

I won't mind being naked with a stranger,

but it's not 'cause I'm some kind of floozy.

Here we go.

Oh, I'm super excited

just because I get to put all my skills to the test

and I really think

that I'm gonna be able to crush it out here.

Time to get naked.

You gotta do me a favor.

Give me a big blur, please.

It's like a grub worm wearing a turtleneck, man.

I've always dreamed of comin' and huntin' in Africa,

big game with my bow

and I finally get the opportunity.

I prefer to bow hunt, really test my skills.

Hunting, trapping, tracking, I love it.

He's down.

Yes, 100%, I am a killer.

But me being the killer means

I know that animal died humanely

and I have the utmost respect for these animals.

It's about 2 inches of snow,

2, 3 inches of snow on the ground.

I love extreme hunts.

Pretty cool.

Anything that puts me out in the wild places.

Here to do some spear fishing.

I want my family to be proud of me.

I wanna come out here and thrive.

I wanna kill it.

This is where I believe I belong.

There's scat, there's tracks, I'm super excited.

Cole's formidable bow hunting, tracking,

trapping, and extreme survival skills match up well

against the brutal South African terrain.

While a lack of experience working with a partner

could prove challenging.

He begins with a primitive survival rating

or PSR of 7.2.

You know, it's gonna be real tough out here.

It's gonna have a lot of challenges

and lots of struggles

and you can hear some of the wildlife.

Feels a lot like my farm back home.

We got more.

I'm an egg and poultry farmer.

We have a regenerative farm that works together

with the land and not against it.

This is a bountiful harvest of carrots.

Been foraging for most of my life.

I have plant identification skills.

This is the start of beautyberry.

And expert snake handling.

I'm Puerto Rican which consists of Native Taino

from the Caribbean region, African, and Spanish.

Definitely gonna be funneling my ancestral roots

while I'm out here and I'm a doer and I'm a workhorse.

But out here, survival is the long game,

more of the tortoise, less of the hare.

So I have no intention of making Africa my bitch.

Shell is experienced in gathering,

foraging, and living off the land.

But she's unfamiliar with African flora,

and has less experience with hunting.

Shell begins the challenge

with a primitive survival rating or PSR of 6.7.

- Hey. - Hi.

-Hi, I'm Shell. -I'm Cole.

- Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you.

-Bring it in for a hug, bud. -Good to meet you.

- Yeah. Great to meet you. -Twenty-one days, right?

- Oh, absolutely. - 100%.

- Totally. - You nervous?

- Um, I'm actually not, no. - No?

I'm not either. I'm super excited.

Yeah. Me too. High-five.

-Woo. -I can't wait.

What are your skills?

- Um, I'm big time hunter, um-- - Okay.

- Oh, thank God. - Yeah.

Let's do this.

- I'll do some trapping, fishing. - -Perfect.

I mean, I've grown up doing it all.

All right. Great.

-Awesome. -Yeah.

I'm great with plant identification,

shelter building, fire starting.

- I'm actually a farmer... - Oh, cool.

so I'm very experienced with animal processing...

- Yeah. Good. Good. - so I can help with those things as well.

-That's super exciting. -It is. Yeah.

- Um, I think our bags are right over here. - -Okay.

- You wanna go check 'em out? - Yeah.

- Let's go get 'em. - Let's see what we got.

- I brought a bow. - Woo.

- Uh, that way, hopefully... - Yes.

- we can be eating good. - Good.

Um, yeah, I specifically made these arrows

- and everything for big game. - Okay. Got you. Wow.

-That's awesome. -Yeah.

I brought a traditional tomahawk.

Oh, sweet.

Super sharp.

- Looks like it. - And, yeah,

so we're gonna be able to cut that hardwood real good.

In addition to their personal survival items,

Cole and Shell are provided with a pot

for boiling water and a fire starter.

-All right. So, here's where we are. -Uh-huh.

Looks like this whole drainage ought to hold plenty of water.

- Looks like a good water source here. - -Oh, yeah.

-That's a great water source. -Yeah.

- That's definitely our extraction. - Yeah. Right there.

- Gotta keep that in mind for day 21. - -Okay.

I think it's probably gonna be best

if we follow some of these game trails

and, uh, just work our way towards water.

Okay. Seems like the trails are gonna be that direction.

Yeah. Kind of head northeast.

All right. Sounds great.

-Cool. -Let's do it.

Let's go.

Shell and Cole must undertake a 4-mile hike

through jagged, uneven terrain,

and thorn-filled brush.

Just let me know if I'm going, uh... No, you're not.

I actually prefer like a faster pace.

In search of a suitable water source,

where they can make camp before the sun sets

and the area's apex predators come out to hunt.

So where in Texas are you from?

Uh, just north of Austin.

Okay. Great.

I'm in Mims, Florida.

It's like a small town,

just east of Orlando on the coast.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Shell seems really cool, level-headed, down-to-earth.

She works on a farm,

so I know that her work ethic is gotta be strong.

But she's definitely on the thin side

and it worries me because, uh, fatigue,

I think, is gonna come for her

a lot sooner than it will for me

which means I need to try to keep her fed and healthy.

I've been barefooted probably most of my life.

Uh, me too. Great.

See, look, this is perfect.

I've hit the jackpot.

I was hoping my partner would be a bow hunter

and he is and he's very experienced

and we can definitely complement each other's strengths and weaknesses,

which is exactly what I wanted.

Are you married?

- I am married. - Okay.

Yup. We have two kids.

I have a 18-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl.

- Boy and a girl. - Yup.

It's pretty hot. I'm sweating.

Pretty dehydrated.

Ah, water. Yay.

Good. Oh, it looks fresh.

And it's actually flowing.

-There's lots of it over here too. -Nice and cool.

-Nice and cool. -This is huge.

Good game trails.

They definitely come over here to drink.

Yeah.

You can see, like, the trails are just beat up

-coming across back and forth. -Mmm-hmm.

Minnows, there's a big brim right there.

-You see him? -Oh, yeah, I see him.

Oh.

We can make a fish trap.

- Oh, absolutely. - Several, you know.

Absolutely. Yeah.

That's a bushpig.

- Right there? Okay. - Yeah.

- Those little tracks. -Yeah. I see them right here.

-A baboon. -Oh, yeah. Wow.

Looks like it.

Looks like a little hand.

Okay. So baboons in the area.

- Good to know. - Yeah.

- It's incredible, the amount of track. - -Mmm-hmm.

Yes, it really is.

You can see the lake up ahead.

Oh, yes, you can. Hey, look, there it is.

Oh, yeah, this is a perfect little whole water, it looks like.

Oh, yeah.

Pretty good looking spot.

I definitely think we should probably put our shelter

kind of further away from water, but close enough.

I'm super happy that it's not just a little mud hole,

that we have some running water,

and that it's a large body of water with fish

and a lot of different animals and resources.

You stop me if you see something you like.

All right.

There's a great flat spot right here.

- Okay. Yeah. - It looks like

we'll be covered with shade.

Yeah.

It's got a good breeze.

Definitely high and dry.

Yeah.

You know, just kind of build a perimeter right here.

-Yeah. -Trim some of this...

Yup. Trim kind of this crap back...

-stuff. Yeah. -and maybe get rid

some of this grass and stuff.

Yeah. Definitely. We can use that

-for bedding and stuff too... -Yeah.

so that would be good.

Okay. Yeah. We can do this.

-Good work. High-five. -Right on.

-Teamwork. -Yeah.

I can get started on the fire.

Okay.

We chose this location

because we're a little bit elevated, we have a vantage,

we can kind of scope out all the way around us,

and we don't wanna be set up just directly

on top of the water.

The animals are coming in, this puts us away from that

and potentially leaves that for hunting and fishing.

Let's see if Africa is kind to us here

and allows us to get a pretty quick fire.

So excited.

Every one of these little limbs

are just covered with little briars,

some of the plants I've been getting are hooked.

This is nasty, nasty stuff.

You can see that.

This is what's gonna detour the predators

and keep us safe tonight.

I just have to be careful approaching.

Uh-oh.

Croc.

I'm just gonna try to keep an eye out for him,

make sure he stays over there.

Yeah.

Break time?

You, my lady, are a badass.

-So are you. -Thank you.

- It is hot. - Yeah.

I've got a little ways down there.

We could maybe dig a well tomorrow.

Mmm-hmm. Yeah.

I've actually dug several hand dug wells.

-Yeah. -I've drank right out of it,

- not having problems. - Yeah. Good.

I think maybe a walk is in order.

Yeah. Just like a jaunt.

Little hunt.

Your feet tendered?

Yeah. Definitely.

Oh, crap.

Oh, my gosh.

Oh, man.

It's a wildebeest.

Fresh.

Oh, crap.

It's a wildebeest.

They definitely winded us.

- They're not there? - No.

That sucks.

Most of the times when they wind us like that,

- they're gone. - Yeah.

I think just one of them caught our scent

and then they all kind of jumped up and scattered.

Man, it was chaos there for a second but so awesome.

Well, now we know where the wildebeests are, right?

Yeah. That was a pretty good herd too.

Sick.

There we go.

- Okay. - There we go.

Y'all, we're here.

Night one, the beginning.

Got us a fire.

We're out here in our boma.

And so you can see all that behind me.

It's pretty good.

- And, um... - The surrounding.

Yeah. We're surrounded by thorns and thistles.

We're thriving so far in Africa.

Do you have anything to add?

No, I think that's pretty good.

All right.

Go team.

I don't know what it was, but-- Scary.

Right back near behind us.

And start this fire up a little bit

and I'm probably gonna spend most of the day

down there at that pond.

And it's time to go hunting.

I didn't get a whole lot of rest,

maybe 10 to 30 minutes of sleep.

I'm a bow hunter.

I took on this challenge

because I wanted to show those skills off.

Yeah. We've been seeing these ducks

every time we come down and get water.

If I can get snuck over, maybe I can get a shot off.

Feeling tired and dehydrated.

I'm fairly certain we both

overworked our self yesterday.

Oh.

Seriously?

This morning, I got to go on a little hunt,

but bow hunting is a game of inches,

so we'll try again tomorrow.

I'm gonna make a coyote well,

which is basically a hand dug well.

I don't wanna have to spend so much time

going through the process of building our fire up,

boiling, and waiting for our water to cool.

This looks like a pretty decent spot.

Once I hit that water table of the pond,

then it'll basically filter in to that point.

We can drink, you know, until we run the well dry

and then it'll seep back in

and it's just gonna be readily available

like you walking up to the refrigerator

and, you know, grabbing a bottle of water.

I'm so tired.

I fumbled the water, which is typical.

At least my partner right now is digging us a well,

which hopefully works pretty well for us.

No pun intended.

What I like is it's not just immediate water.

It's really having to work to fill this hole up.

Yeah, it tastes good.

I've been working on removing the bark

in order to do some cordage.

Trying to do a trotline to get fish.

Shells, the well, it is super clean.

Thank god.

I know.

I'm gonna say many prayers tonight

that that well is A-Okay for us.

I'll be the guinea pig

but I think it's pretty damn clean.

- Okay. - Definitely heating up.

Yeah.

So I have all of our cordage.

Yeah. Pass me some of that.

Got something going on.

Cool.

- This stuff is stout. - Okay.

If I catch a catfish with this, it's gonna be badass.

I'm telling you.

Yeah, I agree.

And I'm gonna have to make a little gorge hook.

Yeah.

I'm gonna go on a little search real quick.

I'm looking for a gorge hook or something

to make into a gorge hook.

I wanted a very stout material,

something that's real hard and this is perfect.

Can whittle a nice probably inch and a half long hook

with a hole right in the middle.

And then I'm gonna force some bait

on either side of it.

Hopefully a catfish inhales it.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.

Money, dude.

We'll go on a little hunt.

Yeah. Let's find a bait now.

Ah, I see a really large skink.

See if you could whop him.

There you go.

Oh. Damn.

- That thing's quick. - He's gone. Yeah.

That was my catfish bait.

Yeah.

See all these little fish right here?

Yeah. I can see 'em.

Oh, I got him.

Oh, you got him?

-Look at that. -Whoa. Oh, my gosh.

Look at that.

Gorge hook size.

That's a perfect bait.

Wonder where all the big ones went.

They must have a good hiding spot.

Yeah. They probably do.

Hopefully this hook will lodge into his throat

and we can eat.

You see that?

Totally disguised.

Ready to go.

Now I just gotta jam this in the water.

Cool.

Line's all set.

We should be able to see if anything gets it.

Look at the geese.

They can't even smell

and they're one of the harder things to kill out here.

Did they go down there and land?

There's a bunch of 'em.

I'm going hunting.

Yeah, right there.

Damn.

That didn't work.

Another failed attempt at the ducks.

Their eyesight is just so good

and they blend in so good.

I was right on top of 'em and I couldn't see 'em.

The damn duck spooked out.

Dang.

Cole made it all night.

So we're pretty confident

that the well is just good and it's clean.

So I'm very happy and excited about that.

Yeah, that water tastes so good and it's cool.

And clearer water.

So do you want to check the trotline?

Yeah.

Cool.

Hold up.

Look at the bubbles right here.

-Look at the bubbles. -Yeah, I see the bubbles.

Crocodile.

Stay.

Stay still.

Oh, yeah, he's right here.

Okay.

-Oh. -Oh, my God.

Hold up.

Look at the bubbles.

Yeah, I see the bubbles.

Oh, yeah, he's right here.

- Okay. - Crocodile.

Stay still.

Oh.

Oh, my God.

-Oh, my God. -Yes.

Woo-hoo!

Oh, my God.

Wow. Is he dead?

Yeah. It's a juvenile.

Yeah. Man.

Oh, I'm so stoked.

That thing is gonna be so tasty.

Oh, my God.

The trotline worked.

So beautiful.

Thank you.

-Thank you, croc. -Yes. Thank you for your life,

for sure.

Super proud of the harvest.

I mean, that's what I came here to do.

It's definitely tough.

Here it is day three and I've got something for me

and my partner to munch on for the next couple days.

For the record, this was my number one thing

I wanted to eat coming out here.

-Really? -Oh, yeah.

Because gator's one of my favorite meat,

so it's like, "Well, now you gotta have croc."

I'm here to please.

With the croc, I feel really good.

Really good right now.

But anyways, just wanted to give a little update.

I want to tell my wife, Casey, I love you so much.

Thank you so much for letting me do this.

Madison, I hope you're proud of your daddy.

Hope y'all both are.

Oh, yeah.

Here we are after our wonderful croc kill,

which we are stoked about,

and we have legs directly on the coals

and we're cooking this big juicy croc tail.

That's gonna be so delicious.

That's so good.

-Tastes like gator. -Mmm-hmm.

Very mild.

It's like chicken, everybody.

You think?

I mean, parts of a chicken.

Super thankful.

- Not bad for day three. - Mmm-hmm.

Not bad.

Super loud thunder.

I might've even been listening to it for,

like, the last hour maybe.

Yeah, an hour.

We're just really concerned

'cause we're not set up for rain yet.

We're staying hopeful that this is not gonna be

coming down on us.

I guess we're thinking working on our lean-to shelter,

so we don't get caught

naked and shelterless out in another storm.

Right.

Last night, we kind of got caught with our pants down.

Quite literally.

And had a thunderstorm

that just barely missed our camp.

We would've just been miserable.

Everything would've been soaked.

We would've been screwed.

So we need to be prepared for it,

if we plan to last.

Man, should be it here.

- That's good. - Yeah.

Croc jerky.

Delish.

I couldn't recommend it more.

All right. Snack time is over.

I'm ready to go make a blind.

I need to make a good stew.

The croc meat, we'll probably be done with it today.

I'm definitely amped up to get another harvest.

Keeping an eye out for basil.

Basils are gonna have, like, really good nutrients.

I've been looking for this everywhere.

African basil is divine.

There's a lot of minerals and stuff that our body

needs that's gonna naturally be in this basil.

We're gonna go up to where I see the freshest sign

and set up a blind,

potentially have somewhere to go sit in the upcoming days

to make a big harvest.

The base for this stew is croc tail bone broth.

We're going to add our seasoned carcass meat

and we'll finish this meat tonight.

And I've got very tasty basil.

Yeah, that's good stuff right there.

Starting to get hungry.

It looks like

there was an animal that traveled through here

fairly recently.

I mean, honestly, I think this is kind of the best spot.

Either have to come from my left

and come to the water here

or come way out in front of me

to my right and come down in front of me.

I think this is gonna be a good spot tomorrow for sure.

How's it going?

Good.

Good scouting mission.

I plan to go there tomorrow for sure.

- Okay. - The soup looks good.

It's got a few of the rib bones

with like lots of good cartilage and stuff

with the collagen.

And that's why I put it in there

is 'cause all that collagen...

-Yeah. -is really great for you.

-Nice. -And then a basil.

Yeah.

- Delicious? - Yeah.

Oh, my gosh. I'm so excited.

Hmm. Broth is good.

And it's fatty too.

It's just like dripping off of it.

Hmm.

Yeah, that's good.

Are you okay?

Cold. It's like crazy.

It's super cold right now.

I'm thinking low 50s.

I think maybe I just took that fire up a little.

It's been cold all night.

Oh, my God.

My ass keeps hitting the cold.

I'm gonna hunt for as long as I can stand it.

Sitting is not my specialty.

Good luck, dude.

Cole, he just is like... He's a hunting machine.

He really is all about hunting, which is fine.

He can function as he needs to

as long as he doesn't overdo it.

That son of a bitch croc,

he just keeps snagging my bait off of the trotline

like taunting me now.

In Africa, they will allow you to harvest croc

with archery equipment.

That's the rules.

So I gotta find another way to kill this one soon.

Not sleeping for 12 hours in a freezing cold night.

I don't think either of us have much energy.

So today I'm gonna actually work on a sleeping mat for Cole

and a blanket for me.

It's all made out of grass,

which has got really great insulated properties.

Cole, I just really do have utmost confidence

in his skills and abilities.

We've already gotten the croc

and I know we're gonna get more,

so I'm just gonna try to keep an eye out for him,

make sure he stays hydrated and well taken care of.

Okay. We're set up in the pond.

Hopefully, something comes in.

When we finish the croc meat

and, man, Shell's definitely gotten thinner.

I can see her ribs and, yeah, it just...

You know, that worries me right there.

But it also, you know, kind of motivates me.

Hopefully, I can get her something to eat.

It was real quiet.

Nothing really going on.

I can't stand to just sit there.

And not be productive or do something.

So I'm fixing to head down to the pond

and see where the damn croc is

so that I can get ready to harvest that dude,

uh, 'cause it's time to eat again.

Oh, I see him.

He's over here at the end of this little island

right there

and he's just sunbathing right now.

I wanna try and hand fish this croc.

I'm fixing to get in the water and go after him.

Oh, my God.

I wanna hand fish this croc.

I made a sleeping mat for Cole and a blanket for me.

How's it goin'?

How does it look?

Looks good.

I got in the water with it.

Wait, what?

Yeah.

Okay. How did it go?

It was ridiculous.

I crawled right up to it, and honestly, I was, like...

8 to 10 inches, I'm guessin', like, my reach.

And then when he started...

He finally got too uncomfortable, he ended up spookin'

and I tried to grab him real quick

but it didn't work out.

But it was damn close.

-Crazy. -Uh, yeah.

- That is crazy. - Yeah.

Cole getting in water, it was definitely a mixture

of extreme bravery and stupidity.

Definitely brave but a huge risk.

You're having fun or what?

No.

We know that there, at this point,

aren't any massively large crocs in that pond.

But even if the smaller crocs had bitten him

in certain places like an artery

and it could definitely take him out

of the challenge or worse.

Ready to go for the night.

My bed even raised me up a little bit

to where the fire is gonna get to me

- in a little time. - Yeah.

Hell, yeah.

Is that nice?

Yeah. This is good.

- Thank you. - You're welcome.

I'm actually gonna go on that side.

Yeah. Sounds good.

I'll try to pop a fish maybe.

Cole, like, he goes and he really is...

Expansively hunts and stuff,

and so his body's able to take that

but I doubt that mine could take that for very long

in the current condition that it's in.

I'm starting to get thin,

so I'm trying to conserve my energy.

Oh, there a fish.

If we didn't get any big game,

he'd be really upset, I think, with himself.

And he is, like, dead serious about getting me food

because he knows I'll get, like, super emaciated.

That was close.

I see you, boy.

I freakin' see you.

I've got a captive audience with the croc

and I got close yesterday,

and I feel like his days are numbered.

Round two with this little croc.

I'm gonna try to creep up there

and, really, I'm just gonna give him a good whopping

with this stick and hopefully it does the job.

I bet you that croc is scared less of you

at this point.

- Nice. - That didn't work.

Did it get you?

Is it gone?

Yeah.

I feel like if I had a spear,

I think I could've got him.

Damn.

No dinner tonight.

I plan on making a spear for hunting the crocodile.

The croc is just, uh... I think it's my easiest route

for feedin' us the quickest, you know?

So I wanna take advantage of that.

And plus, we love croc.

My goal is to start on a big catfish trap.

- Does that sound good? - Yeah.

Thinking of putting the trap here

if I did a little channel and like a holding area.

I'm curious to see.

- If it works, that'd be badass. - -Yeah.

Different way of catfishin'.

- Yeah. - We're talking about a

10 to 20-pound catfish.

- My God. - That's, uh...

That's gonna have to be a pretty good-sized hole.

These catfish are ridiculously large here

and they walk on land.

Can't catch one of those in a small fish trap,

so you gotta dig it big.

Shell will create a catfish trap

by digging a large hole in the ground

that connects to the water source via canal,

which allows water and fish to flow in.

Next, the trap is baited and fenced in with sticks,

and a one-way door to prevent the fish from escaping.

It's a lot of effort,

especially since this trap's so big.

But looking forward to having passive ways of fishing,

see that it can kind of take some of that

hunting pressure off of him.

I'm always concerned about Cole

because he works so hard

and I just don't want him to burn himself out.

I don't I get somethin' to eat in a couple days,

she's not gonna be doing good.

I've been worried about her since day one.

The risk would be me, like, exhausting myself

but, um, the reward is

that we get, like, really giant catfish and stuff.

That would feed us for days.

Yeah, I think Shell came into this kinda on a deficit.

And, uh, like, I've got enough fat still on me,

I can handle to do the work,

so I'll probably go help her knock that out.

How's it goin', Shell?

I'm feelin' tired.

Did you wanna help me knock it out?

- Yeah. - Okay.

I'll go grab the bait.

Hopefully they like stinky croc guts.

Ooh, that's right.

The massive African catfish trap.

There's a lot of effort, took a long time,

but it's done.

You have the bait on the stick right here, a long stick,

and its own little cage that doesn't get stolen,

and you've got our canal

out to the greater body of water.

The hope is to get a catfish overnight.

Okay.

Let's see what she does.

Day nine.

Yo, it's freezing cold.

The mornings are getting colder and colder.

Sleeping is actually the suckiest part of all of this.

It doesn't matter what you lie down on,

it's sandpaper to your ass.

Like, baking on one side, freezing on the other.

is what matters.

That's what it equates to is.

Yesterday was rough.

I'll probably take it easy today,

just let my body rest a little bit,

hoping to have fish today while we rest and recover.

You okay?

You okay?

Yeah.

Huh?

You all right?

Yeah, I just passed out, I'm okay.

Okay, let's sit back down over there.

Just bring that, all right?

We're gonna bring the body cam.

Yeah.

You hit your face, Shell?

Yeah.

- What's up? - I just stood up too fast.

Then you're very dizzy?

Yeah.

Okay. So what I think it is

is your blood pressure is a bit low.

- Okay? Obviously... - Yeah.

drink your water... -Yeah. -as you can,

um, then, obviously,

it comes down to proteins and things.

But we're gonna have to monitor

your blood pressure now

very closely if you keep dropping.

Okay.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I'm sitting here, having a pity party

this morning about not being able to sleep last night

and then she passes out like that, like, hardcore,

scared the out of me.

I can see her ribs and, really,

just kind of motivates me

to go try to get somethin' to eat.

You know, my body's not doin' great right now.

I expected the starvation aspect of this,

it's hard on the body for sure.

It's just a matter of just honestly grittin'

and bearin' it, and just suffering through it.

But I'm just gonna be takin' it easy,

I'm gonna hydrate today.

I feel like I'm in this amazing headspace,

honestly, still.

Cole's not in a great headspace

because of the hunting situation out here.

This is, uh, some of the croc gut.

I plan on going croc hunting, just sit there in the shade,

wait till he comes up to try to get it.

See if that gets his attention.

There he is.

All the way up against that other bank.

Uh, the good thing is the wind is blowing right to him.

Here crocky, crocky, crocky, crocky.

No fish in that fish trap.

Just a matter of time.

I missed it.

The crocodile's sticking to the deep end

of the pond today.

Not a whole lot going on right now,

I'm just kind of waiting.

I haven't seen the croc in a while.

Okay, I'm fixing it and head to camp,

I'm gonna go get water before it gets too hot.

I'm gonna get a fish on my way back.

I hate everything about this freakin' pond.

It's a new day, I'm feeling better.

Goddang, I'm hungry.

Something has to die for us to live,

so unfortunately, today, something must die.

I know. Looking forward to meat,

it's really gonna nourish us.

I tend to come back empty-handed every time.

No. That's not true.

Don't get crazy on me now.

Uh, today is a different day, folks.

Get somethin' to eat.

I wanted to come in here as a hunter

and I'm pretty damn aggravated.

I just have to feed myself and my partner.

I'm trying to get my head back

and, uh, along into the game.

I'mma go in here and try to get it done,

try to bring back some meat.

So we're gonna go sit in the blind,

I think the conditions are perfect and, uh, I think

there's a good opportunity something's gonna come in.

I knew that was gonna happen.

As soon as he head my way and he was gone.

I wasn't gonna take a run and shot though,

he was on the move to get to that water.

Man.

This is like the cold front coming in for sure.

Come on.

Like, the wind is enough.

Just sitting here, enjoying the rain,

it doesn't happen during the dry season.

55 degrees and rainin'.

Did I tell you it was rainin'?

Yeah. It's just crazy out there.

Ridiculous.

No sleep again,

just flip-floppin' until...

I don't know what time it was that the rain started.

A little bit of a struggle by...

A lot of bit of a struggle by stress last night.

My body is just so weak.

Like I told you, deep down, without the sleep,

it's really just kinda shifted my mood

and I'm just aggravated with, you know, the whole situation.

I'm sick of not sleepin'.

I'm over it.

Goin' huntin'.

Sounds good.

I go for my morning walk.

I'm just gonna creep through here.

Get my eyes open to look for one of these little birds.

Man.

These damn birds, man.

These fish are so difficult to see, it's insane.

Sucker.

Damn.

Pretty damn tired, aggravated or annoyed,

or, uh, probably a list of things.

Just huntin' has been pretty much a no-go.

The croc just took off from right there.

There he is over there.

Look how close he is right there.

That had to have been close.

I think one of these times

I'll get lucky or somethin'.

I wanted to try to, you know,

feed myself and my partner

and that's just totally not been the case.

Cole's been in a really bad mood.

He is desperate to get a kill for us

and I think because he hasn't in a while since the croc,

I think he is just hard on himself, really frustrated.

These damn birds, man.

It's so annoying.

Check out these primitive high fashion plugs

I got going on here.

Made them myself from bush pig tusks.

They look rad.

Love them.

All right, time to go check that fish trap.

Today I'm struggling with feeling weak and tired.

My spirit's still super strong and, um,

just battling with my body

kind of needing a lot more sleep

and, you know, of course lack of nutrients.

We're on a week of pretty much no food.

And so, hoping that we can catch

some big old catfish, which would really help us.

Where are you, fish?

Ooh! Okay, there's a little one in here.

I'm certain it's a catfish.

Where are you fish?

My God. It's right here.

Where is that thing?

Come on.

How the hell am I supposed to catch

a teeny tiny little freakin'... Oh, God.

It's like slippery.

Oh, I almost had it.

Oh, I had it.

Okay.

I'm gonna get it though.

I'm ready.

Oh, oh, there you go.

Yeah, yeah.

Yes.

There you go.

Yeah, yeah.

Yes.

Yes.

Oh, my gosh.

Well, that's one. I don't know if there's another one.

Let me try this.

Oh, yeah, yeah.

There's another one.

I'm gonna pin him.

Yeah, I got it. I got it.

I got it.

I kind of trapped it.

There we go.

Hey, look, this one's bigger than that one.

I'll give that one to Cole.

Today we caught catfish.

Yay!

I was able to get two, unfortunately smaller,

but, you know, I'll take anything here.

One for me and one for my partner.

-Guess what I got? -Sweet.

Yeah. Two catfish, one for me and for you.

Yeah. Aren't they beautiful?

They are.

Yeah.

Good little meal for us.

Oh, yeah.

Looks real nice and ready.

It could be good.

Good.

Delish.

Oh, didn't mean to take that much.

Uh-uh.

You're eating all of it.

Hmm?

You're not gonna help me eat it?

Nope. It's all you, girl. You need--

You're seriously not gonna help me eat it?

You need it way worse than I do.

No, I don't.

I want you to eat it all, Shell.

You worked so hard on that trap and the door.

I let Shell have the fish just because seeing the shape

that she was in and having her passed out

a couple days before,

she needs the fish way more than I do.

This is your piece.

I want you to eat them both.

You could easily eat both of those.

Of course I can.

But we're a team and...

I'll eat something else this evening.

Thanks for caring.

Are you seriously not gonna have any?

No, for real.

I want you to have it all.

I think you need it much more than I do.

That way you can make it to 21.

I did my best to convince my partner to partake.

Um, he chose not to because he wanted me

to have all of the nutrients, which I do appreciate.

But I also wish that he would've shared

the meal with me since it's...

This is all a team effort.

Ow.

Oh.

What?

-Ah. -Okay.

Where do you think it is?

Bastard.

Night of day, whatever it is.

And I got stung by a scorpion.

It stung my elbow after I like brushed it off or something.

I don't... I'm not fully certain, I was sleeping.

I tell you, it hurts real bad.

It's not a joke.

Dude, where is this thing?

How am I supposed to sleep here?

They're hurting?

Yeah, it hurts.

It hurts.

So things I don't tell you about scorpion bites,

the stinging in the bite feels as fresh

as when it just stung you four hours later.

And six to seven hours later,

which is where we're at now,

it still hurts, but not dead.

There's positive to everything.

-Oh, yeah. -Yeah.

Yup.

Man, Shell is a super mind strong individual.

She got stung last night and just kept going.

I mean, how badass is that?

Really just kinda motivates me to get up,

grab my bow, and go try to get something to eat.

Getting painted up.

Something's gonna go into a hunt.

Nice.

Something's gonna happen today.

I feel it.

It's time to go huntin' y'all.

My goal is to have us something to eat every day.

And unfortunately, I haven't been able

to get it done and it's been frustrating and difficult,

but hunting does take a lot of time.

I'm just gonna keep pushing.

How's the look?

Looking leopardy.

I'm outta here, going huntin'.

All right. Good luck.

I'm on a mission.

I came here for a reason, you know?

I'm not somebody that's gonna sit back

and let something just get fed to me.

That's not my style.

I want to go out there and make it happen,

and then be able to look back and say, "Damn right.

I made it happen." I didn't let it happen.

It's a decent wind.

Oh, my God.

She's freaking huge.

Holy.

So I just shot a eland cow.

She was about 30 yards.

I felt good with the shot, but she spun a little bit

and when she was running away,

I could see her holding her offside leg,

so I'm just praying that I made a good shot

and she goes down.

I'm freaking pumped right now.

When I recovered the arrow,

it had good blood on it, but unfortunately,

the penetration was only about four inches.

So, when the shot hit her,

I think it came into her brisket

and then hit that offside leg,

which is not a totally fatal shot,

but there is a blood trail to follow.

For the safety of the cast and crew,

Cole must return to camp

and resume his search in the morning.

Taking up the trail as long as I think

it's safe to do.

It's definitely not a good idea

to be out here after it gets dark.

I mean, there's lions,

there's leopards, there's hyenas.

There's other big game that if you stumble across

at night, it's not gonna be a good situation,

so just gonna back out and leave it for the night,

and get back on it in the mornin'.

- You awake? - Yeah. What's up?

I shot a eland cow.

Oh,.

Yeah.

Um, unfortunately with the fading light,

I decided to come back to camp.

But her leg is definitely broke

and the good news is that

she can't move around very good.

So, we'll have to pray about it tonight

-and... -For sure. Yeah.

you know, hopefully, hopefully we end up

recovering her tomorrow.

Yeah.

Crazy.

We need to get on the move.

We can get up on this blood trail

and go find this cow.

Yeah. Sounds good.

Finding the eland would be a huge win for us morale-wise

and our bodies could really use somethin' substantial.

The last thing I want is somethin' to find it

before we do.

Look, there's vultures, like, circling up there.

You see 'em?

Oh yeah, I see 'em.

Anytime that I'm elk hunting,

you always look for, like, ravens or birds

'cause they're the first ones to find it.

I think we just keep heading that way.

Okay.

We're on a mission to recover this animal.

Anything and everything is looking for an easy meal

and me getting that animal wounded,

it just makes for a dangerous situation

for us going into the track

and I'm not only worried for our safety,

but I'm worried for our meat

that could potentially carry us to the end.

You can see something crash through here.

See all this broke stuff.

It's not a real beat down defined trail,

but somethin's definitely come through here.

Yeah. Okay.

Yeah. You see her tracks here?

Another track right there.

There's a piece of blood right here. See it?

Yeah, I see it right here.

Okay.

And that's good blood.

Yeah, there's more blood right here.

See it?

Oh yeah, I see it.

I think we just continue this same direction.

Okay.

Just follow these tracks and all the blood.

Shell and I are just movin' slow and steady,

picking up every little sign, track, blood drop.

More here.

Every little thing that we can,

just makin' our way to hopefully a good recovery.

It's getting hot too, man. I hope we find her soon.

Yeah, it's getting real hot.

Really tears me up inside to think

that I cause harm to an animal and not be able to recover it.

I do everything I can as a good hunter

and an ethical hunter to put forth my best effort

into recovering that animal

and making sure it's a quick humane harvest.

Look, we've got to find her.

Do you think the hyenas might have gotten her?

I'm not super worried about the hyenas, but,

like, if we stumble on her

and there's a pack of lions on her,

I don't think that's gonna be very good.

No.

Holy there she is right there, Shell.

-Whoa. What? -Oh, my God, man.

Oh, my God.

Been looking all day.

Oh, wow.

Oh, man.

Look at her. She's so beautiful.

Oh, my God, man.

- Thank you so much. - Yeah.

I've been running to supper.

Yeah.

She is very large.

Oh, thank you so much for your life.

My girl.

We appreciate it so much.

Yeah. Thank you so much.

You will not go to waste.

You know, hunting is a hard thing.

Unfortunately, a life has to be ended

for our lives to continue and I do the killing myself.

So, the flood of emotions hit me,

not just because of the death of the animal,

but because I know that she's gonna...

she's gonna help us cross the finish line for day 21.

-So beautiful. -She's so gorgeous.

Oh, my God. She's huge.

Yeah.

How heavy do you think she is?

Probably 600 or 700 pounds.

Oh.

And these hooves, oof.

Insane.

I probably ought to get to work.

All right.

There we go.

Yeah. Okay.

-There. Just like that. -Yeah. Yeah.

We're gonna take as much as we can.

We wanna take her heart and her backstraps, for sure.

You know, with just the two of us,

we will take the really choice cuts of meat.

That's about all that we can carry and manage.

There will be some left behind,

but that's gonna go to, uh,

to feeding some other animals.

With the circle of life out here in Africa,

you know, it doesn't break my heart

to have some of that meat go to them.

-Whoa. -There we go.

Wow.

That's beautiful. That's massive.

That's gonna be such good eating.

Yeah.

- Yum. - All right.

We're gonna eat good tonight.

- Yeah. Wow. - Heart and liver.

Yummy.

How many Y sticks do you need? Four?

Yeah, let's get four of 'em.

Okay.

I'm gonna make a smoke rack to save this meat.

We'll have four good Y sticks that we can shove

in the ground surround by rocks.

Just to kinda sturdy 'em up.

We'll have a Y stick and a Y stick

with another stick going between.

And then we'll just have a bunch of these

little straight ones to lay across.

That way we can just make a grill, basically.

Like, we can just kinda set it up there, really,

and cook it over the fire.

I think we're in pretty good shape here.

Okay.

Welcome to Cooking with Cole everyone.

Tonight, we're preparing for you eland heart,

eland liver, eland backstrap, and eland tenderloins.

I just remembered, I'm sitting our dinner table.

Yeah, I was gonna say something...

-Man, relax. -as soon as you sat on it.

Wow. Look at that.

That's a massive tenderloin right there.

That's the good stuff.

Yeah. That's what I'm talking about.

We are fixing the chow down.

Looks delicious.

Oh, it's gonna be.

I'm hungry.

This eland is like everything for our challenge.

We've been getting weaker and weaker by the day

and all of the nutrients

packed into all this organ meat.

It's just insanity for our bodies.

We can finish strong and we're stronger than we are already.

Yeah, for sure.

How is it?

Good.

Super tender.

Hmm.

Delicious.

So good.

- I'm a bow hunter. - I took on this challenge

because I wanted to show those skills off.

It's been frustrating and difficult,

but with this eland behind me,

I think my momentum is building

and it's just kind of feeding the fire

and I plan to push to the end.

I mean, we could last to day 30 with this,

which is freaking awesome,

you know, thanks to this eland.

Oh, absolutely.

Huge gift.

Yeah.

What was that?

Somethin' outside the boma.

- Really? - Yeah.

You see it?

No.

Check that one out.

Ooh.

Nice.

The days here are long, so while you're sitting there,

you kinda want something to occupy your mind.

And so, I've been creating a line of jewelry

for Cole and I to wear for extraction.

And we're calling it primitive high fashion.

There's sinew on this tooth.

But you can see there's a little loop to,

like, use it as like a pendant or whatever earring.

We're calling this bush pig tusk necklace.

So you see this expertly twisted

cordage from Mopane bark.

And it also has a native bird feather

and a bush pig tusk, which is the centerpiece

to this primitive high fashion.

One of a kind.

You can buy these on Shell's page.

They run about 4.50 apiece.

USD.

And there was something outside of our boma.

I could hear it walking over here.

Like, right next to our boma or...

- Yeah. - out in the... Well, sure.

Yeah, not far, 10 yards.

It's just walking and going through the brush.

Some hyena, celebrating with us.

Last night, we had some good animal activity

outside of our boma.

Might be lions, there might be

other dangerous creatures, maybe hyenas, unfortunately.

There's a variety of different scavengers

who will come up and try to eat all of our meat.

So, we just definitely need to be very alert

and make sure that we're protecting it.

I'm gonna smoke some meat.

We're gonna make jerky.

I'll just basically hang the meat

and then I'll just strip it off.

So since this meat's been out,

you can already tell that the smoke

is already starting to do a job on it.

It's developing this protective skin.

As soon as it gets the skin on it,

the blow flies cannot penetrate it

and potentially contaminate our meat.

So, I'm just gonna take and process it down

into thin little small pieces

and then we'll lay it on the smoker

and let it go to work.

When you're making jerky,

you just want small, thin pieces

to where the smoke can kinda cover every bit of it.

Let that smoke really billow out amongst everything,

'cause I need smoke in there, but no fire.

Whenever you harvest an animal like this,

the work never stops.

You keep going until everything is safe

and cured and processed.

I've been working all day,

getting everything cut into smokable sizes

so that none of it perishes

and everything we have there is consumable

for not just today, but for days to come.

That looks delicious.

It's a lot of meat.

My first go at bush jerky,

I think it turned out pretty decent.

It's delicious.

I mean, we're basically gonna coast through

until day 21 now, thanks to this eland.

Day 20.

Feels good.

It feels real good.

I can't wait to be extracted.

I'm freaking pumped.

Woo. Day 20.

Pretty much our final day,

minus obviously, extraction day.

Gonna live today out strong by resting and napping,

and just devouring this jerky

that is indescribably good.

Mmm-hmm.

And we've got plenty of meat left for extraction.

Mmm-hmm.

It's a cool wind.

It is crazy.

Night of day 20.

Ah.

We're just here in front of our final fire.

Trying to stay warm.

- Yeah. - It's gotta below 50.

Yeah, it's 40 somethin'.

Guess it's 45 to 47 degrees this mornin'.

Yeah.

My bones hurt.

It's brutal.

Yeah. Last hour or so,

we've been listenin' to, uh, the lion's so,

out in the distance.

All right.

Woo!

Day 21.

We've been up with the lions this morning

and, uh, yeah,

we're about to pack it up and we're about to head out.

You ready?

- Totally ready. - Day 21.

Stoked.

Yeah, I know.

This morning, I'm feeling a bit tired.

I maybe got half hour of sleep.

It looks like in the 40s

is a no-go for sleeping for me.

It's gonna be a very hot day, so we need to definitely

be aware of dehydration, heat stroke.

This has been a awesome, awesome experience for sure,

but I'm ready to go.

Me too.

Final drink.

Get us some hydrationals.

It's gonna be a hot one.

The extraction hike's gonna be brutal.

We're both pretty damn tired.

All right. Here's us over here...

- Yeah. - at our awesome pond.

- Yeah. - And we need to make it

over here to the river.

Nice. Okay.

Let's do it.

After 21 days with little sleep,

Cole and Shell must now take on an 8-mile trek

across the blistering South African bush belt,

facing triple-digit temperatures.

Before reaching their extraction point,

they'll first need to navigate

a treacherous stretch of thorn-scrubbed grasslands.

Teeming with predators and venomous snakes

like the deadly Cape cobra.

Yeah, it's definitely getting hot.

Definitely wanna keep our eye out

for snakes and stuff in this area.

Gotta fix my stuff now. Oh.

Okay.

Okay.

- Getting bushy. - Yeah, it is.

It's just crazy. You can't see 20 yards off the trail.

Yeah, you really can't.

Sand's getting hot.

Yeah.

Feet are tender.

There, I got one of those sands spurs.

You okay?

- They hurt. - Yeah.

Sands spurs are deceptively small,

yet merciless landmines strewn across the grassland,

poised to punish unsuspecting travelers

and native wildlife.

Ah, sands spur. Ow, ow, ow, ow. Ooh.

Oh yeah, tons of spurs.

Ooh. That was a patch.

Yikes.

They picked up like a bunch of 'em just then.

Yikes.

Oh, be careful there are thorns.

Yeah.

I'm about to get hooked.

Extraction hike is brutal.

I'm climbing over crap.

I'm getting thorns in my feet.

I'm going through briars and bushes.

- Ow. - Oh, good trail.

Oh, yeah, watch out for these ants.

Yeah, it's just brutal.

The sun's beating down, my mouth is dry,

and I just keep trudging on.

You know, I know what's at the end

of the tunnel, so it... I just keep goin'.

Brutal on the feet.

Been walking for a good while.

Yeah.

We're just gonna follow this dry river wash.

Follow these animals tracks that are all in the road.

Yeah, down to water, right?

Terrain's changed.

Uh, seems like it's, uh, softer sand.

The sand's a little bit wet.

Yeah. We gotta be getting close to the water.

Yeah. The smell even changes.

I kind of just now notice that.

I hear the geese too.

Oh, yeah.

- Oh, yeah. This is it. - Yeah, we're here.

Oh. Oh, my gosh.

Wow.

This is huge.

- Yeah. - Huge water.

Where's the extraction vehicle?

I hear somethin'.

Woo, over here!

Woo.

-Yes, ma'am. -Woo.

Oh, my God.

It's been a really awesome experience for sure.

It's really cool

being able to complete this with Shell, thank you.

Sorry.

And, uh, yeah,

I'll remember this for the rest of my life.

-Woo. -Ah.

Twenty-one in Africa, baby!

-Woo! -Woo!

I feel so excited and very emotional,

and just happy of having done the 21 days

with my partner here.

Cole and I have such different survival strategies,

but we did great together as a partnership.

We enhanced each other's journey

and helped each other out and I learned a ton from him

and I loved seeing how good of a teamwork we had.

We did it.

So grateful that Shell was my partner

and couldn't ask for a better partner.

She definitely kept my head in the game and, you know,

that's what a good partner's there to do.

I wanted to learn out here.

I'm a learner. I love learning, and I learned a lot.

It was rough at times for sure, hard on the body,

but learned that my body and mind

are both very strong,

probably stronger than even what I even thought.

Shell's mental toughness

powered her through the finish.

15 pounds lighter,

her primitive survival rating rises from 6.7

to 7.1.

The biggest takeaway from this challenge

is just never give up.

Mentally, you've gotta be ready

to buckle down and roll with the punches.

And I learned that my mind's

probably not as strong as my body,

but I'm working on that and it's definitely

become a lot stronger since I've been out here.

Bent, but not broken, Cole completes the challenge,

shedding 23 pounds in the process.

His PSR rises from 7.2 to 7.7.

- Woo! - We did it!

Yeah, 21 days.
