[Heather Smith speaking]
I really don't think I can do all this... [retching]
...lifting alone.
[Dallas Langston speaking]
[both vomiting]
Oh, we're in serious danger.
Ahhh! Oh, God. Please help me.
[Heather] It's hotter than a $200 Rolex.
People wanna talk about this being a kill zone.
This is actually the Vietnam of the animal kingdom.
There are dead kills all around us.
This is nothing like I've ever faced before,
and I hope that my partners are able to have my six
as much as I'm gonna have to watch theirs.
[Sean McCool] It is hot.
It's one of my concerns, since coming from Anacortes, Washington
it's currently about 40 degrees.
I expect to be dehydrated out here, sunburned.
It looks like the end of the world.
It's definitely gonna make for a good challenge.
[Dallas] I cannot believe that I am in Africa right now.
There's no way that I'm not gonna make it 21 days.
Failing is not an option.
I'm ready to go. Let's get naked.
I'm gonna use this jacked and tanned body to make it 21 days
because I can suffer through anything.
Here comes the dad bod. Watch out.
This is really weird.
One down.
Why am I doing this challenge?
I'll be honest, I kinda question my judgement on this one, too,
because I personally signed up to put myself
into hell for 21 days.
Ooh, this ground is hot.
It's about to get weird. Let's go.
There's three of us on this challenge.
- Looking for my partners. - I'm hoping it's not two dudes.
But if it is, uh, hopefully they're easy to get along with.
- [Dallas] Oh, [bleep], another guy. - How's it going?
[Sean] 'Sup, brother, how you doing?
- I'm Sean. - My name is Dallas.
- Dallas, nice to meet you, man. - Yeah, you as well.
- How are you feeling? - [chuckles] I'm nervous.
- This is awkward as [bleep]. [laughs] - Yeah. [laughs]
- Yeah, I know. - [both laugh]
You been naked with other guys before?
Is this a normal thing for you?
-Well, back in prison, -[laughs]
got a little awkward in the shower from time to time.
- First time, how about you? - Yeah, same.
Hopefully it just becomes normal when we stop thinking about it.
Yeah, I'm sure.
I'm anxious to meet our third partner.
- Yeah, same. - Hopefully it's not another guy.
[Dallas laughs] Yeah.
Two naked people in Africa, anyone?
Hi, guys.
- [Sean] Oh, get out. - [Dallas laughs]
[Sean] We see a female coming down.
- [Sean] Awesome. - I'm pretty relieved.
[Dallas] Probably wouldn't be that exciting to look at two dudes the whole time,
so, yeah. [laughs]
- [Heather] Hi. - I'm Dallas.
- I'm Heather, nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you, too.
And I'm Sean. Nice to meet you.
I would say group hug, but maybe that's a little weird.
[laughs]
- All right, yeah. - [Sean] Let's do it.
[Sean] We meet Heather, and she's just ready to go
and just so excited to meet us.
- Nice to meet you guys. - Hey, where are you from?
Um, I'm from Louisiana, but I live in Texas now. And you?
Uh, I live in Washington state. I grew up all over,
moved around a lot, but Washington state's where I call home now.
I was a combat engineer officer in the Marine Corps,
deployed to Iraq two times.
I first started doing outdoor survival with my dad
as young as I can remember, five or six years old.
Fire making, I can make cordage,
I'm pretty confident in my deadfalls and my traps.
I just grew up camping. My dad is an Eagle Scout, he was military.
He just had a solution for everything.
No matter what, he knew what not to tie, how to fix something.
My dad's Willy McCool.
He was the pilot on the space shuttle Columbia
during its final mission that broke apart during reentry.
[man on radio] Obviously a major malfunction.
[Sean] As 22 years old,
I just personally didn't deal with it well or grieve properly.
So I'm out here to do this challenge
to really learn about myself and have some time to reflect.
And just feel close to my dad again.
- [Dallas] I'm sorry. - Oh, my gosh. I'm sorry.
[narrator] Sean begins with a primitive survival rating,
or PSR, of 6.5.
I was wondering how you were gonna deal with this hot, hot weather up in here.
[Sean] Uh, so far, so good.
- It's Texas to me... - I'm kind of brown, so it helps a little, I think.
- I noticed that. - I'm more concerned about, uh, some fair-skinned partners.
- Maybe getting you out of the sun. - Yeah.
- I'm half-Native, I think I'm gonna be okay. - Okay, good.
[Heather] Yeah. And you?
Uh, originally I'm from St. George, Utah,
- but I live in Orange County, California now. - Oh, nice!
- Oh, nice! Cool Cali guys out here. - [Dallas] Yeah.
- What do you do? - I run a solar company.
[Sean] Oh, that's super awesome.
[Dallas] In my youth, I was always in trouble.
My first felony was at nine years old.
I committed a forgery when I was, like, ten. It was pretty messed up.
When I was 16, I was forced into a wilderness program
for 63 days.
I had to complete a challenge, I had to learn how to make fire with,
you know, primitive skills.
I've gone through some pretty, uh, interesting scenarios
with drug addiction and going to jail and prison.
It was a slow transition to realize
that I could be happy and sober at the same time.
That I could be happy and sober at the same time.
The people that know me in my life today
would never guess the life I used to live.
[man on video] Forward, forward!
[Dallas] I craved the suffering of what I had gone through in the past.
I wanna prove that I'm not soft
after living this cushy life for the past several years.
[narrator] Dallas begins with a primitive survival rating
of 6.3.
It's gonna be a lot of mental, I think, out here.
- [Sean] I think mental is the biggest thing. - Yeah.
[Heather] Meeting my partners, they seem very welcoming.
And my first impression, Dallas seems really nice.
He's a muscular guy, he takes care of himself.
So, I'm really excited.
- You ready to get started? - [Heather] Yeah, you guys are my new roommates.
[Heather] Sean seems pretty laid back.
I think everybody is relieved right now
at what we have for a team.
I think we need go get this show on the road, it's hot.
[Sean] It is hot. So, Heather, what do you do for a living?
- I actually am a professional angler. - [Sean] Nice.
So I have fishing hooks
- and fishing line. - [Sean] Oh, heck yeah.
[Heather] Everybody wants to drink beer and go fishing.
It's not how it is in the pro fishing world.
It takes a lot of stamina, It takes a lot of stamina,
physical strength, and mental strength out of you.
The fish doesn't care that you're female
in a male-dominated sport.
They don't give a [bleep]. The only thing they care about is being caught.
And that's my job, to go out there
and be the hunter on the water.
Check it out.
Skills I'm bringing in to this challenge,
shelter building, water filtration, tracking,
trapping, fire-starting.
You see a spider, what do you say?
- [child] Oh, look, it's food! - [Heather] All right,
that is gonna be my food source.
I am a single mother.
What am I gonna do with you?
So I definitely carry myself to a higher standard
'cause I know that they're gonna follow in my footsteps.
And I'm here because there are no limits that I won't be able to push after this.
"Tap out" is not in her vocabulary, I can assure you.
Tapping out's not an option because there is no honor in failure.
[narrator] Heather begins with a primitive survival rating of 7.3.
Ah, I got my glasses, too, so I can see.
- I won't be Helen Keller out there trying to catch fish. - [Sean] Oh, my gosh. Nice.
[narrator] Dallas has brought a machete.
It's called a woodsman. I figured we'll be cutting a lot of wood.
[narrator] And Sean has brought a fire starter.
The three survivalists have also been given two pots,
as the temperatures of this region of South Africa
at this time of year can reach 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
And the air is almost devoid of humidity,
putting them at high risk of dehydration.
- [Dallas] I've got the map, so let's figure it out. - [Heather] Let's take a look.
[Dallas] Where are we headed?
- Okay. - We're here.
[Heather] This is the Limpopo River and that's a water source,
and we're definitely gonna need that.
But this area's gonna have a huge crocodile infestation, so,
guys, we have to keep our head on a swivel.
[Sean] Also scorpions, snakes, better watch where we're putting our feet
while we're on the move.
Let's get started, 'cause, yeah, we're burning daylight.
[Heather] You first, man.
- [Dallas] All righty. - [all laughing]
[narrator] Dallas, Heather, and Sean have been dropped into Limpokwena, South Africa,
a barren, sun-blasted bushveld
where a delayed rainy season is fueling the desperation
to survive, and every living being
is in a fight to the death against a punishing environment
and its starving predators.
[roaring]
[narrator] This killing field is nestled against the legendary Limpopo River,
in some parts roaring, and in others, bone dry.
Where there is water, crocodiles lie in ambush,
able to hold their breath for up to two hours.
Their attacks are responsible for over 300 human deaths per year.
Back on land, leopards top the food chain,
pouncing at up to 37 miles per hour.
But the greatest danger here is the African sun,
whose midday rays can be fatal to anything
that doesn't seek protection.
[Heather] Africa's already kicking my ass, and we just started.
[Sean] Wow, even just 20 feet on that ground,
Holy crap, [exhales] whoo!
- [Sean] Oh, my gosh. - [Heather] Oh, my feet are on fire. Ah!
[Heather] We're gonna need to make shoes,
- like, immediately. - [Sean] Yes.
[Sean] My wife was actually out here two years ago.
- [Dallas] No way. - [Heather] Oh, really?
- [Sean] Same spot, yeah. - [Heather] You already knew what to...
[Sean] Well, her advice was, "Make shoes right away on insertion."
- [Dallas] Yeah. - [Heather] How'd she do?
- [Heather] Did she make it 21 days? - [Sean] She made it 4 days.
[Heather] Oh, no... wow.
[Ryan Eacret] This place wants to tear us to pieces, doesn't it?
[Sherean Rogouski] Oh! Wow, that...
- [Ryan] You all right? - This is bad.
[Sherean] I don't see how we're gonna make it there without...
- [Ryan groans] Without shoes. - Yeah.
[Sherean] I cannot die out here.
I just wanna go home.
[Sean] But I'm real proud of her.
[Heather] I would be, too, she had the courage to come out here.
Ow, ow, ow.
I've got blisters all over my feet.
Look, they're already coming off.
[Sean] Yeah, those blisters are looking bad.
- [Dallas] I'm going to the water. [laughs] - [Heather] Yeah.
[Heather] At least the mud maybe can be a coating temporarily on our feet.
[Dallas] Oh, yeah.
[Heather] We're losing daylight, guys. As great as this feels...
- [Sean] Ooh, that actually did help a lot. - [Heather] It did help.
- [Sean] Let's take advantage of these cool feet. - [Heather] Right.
[Sean groans] I don't think there's any way you can prepare your feet for this.
Hot pavement in Arizona in the summer, that's what it feels like.
Little farther, guys, there's a good shade spot, we can take a break,
- find some bark, make some shoes. - [Heather] Perfect.
Yeah, I'm the short one, so I've got the little legs
- compared to you guys. - [Sean] No rush.
[Heather groans]
Looking for a mopane tree, 'cause that's a tree I've read about.
Got some knowledge on for this area to make some cordage.
Oh, that was dry. Fudge.
[Heather] The wood is falling apart. Okay, this is not gonna work.
The materials just aren't working.
The bark is literally just dissipating in my hands.
The cordage is not the material that we need,
and I'm like, "What am I doing? What am I doing right now?"
This is the river rocks, actually,
-that are frying the [bleep] out of me, -[Dallas] Okay.
So, I see that's the least amount of river rocks right there
- and then once we can get it, we can just haul ass. - [Dallas] Okay.
[Dallas] Let's get it done.
[Heather] [bleep]. Oh, [bleep]
[Sean] Oh, my gosh.
[Heather] It is so intensely hot right now.
It's hotter than everything I ever experienced.
But we have to move forward.
[Dallas exhales] It's miserable.
[bleeping]
[Dallas] Heat really does a number on you.
- [Heather] Ah, [bleep]! Ow, ow, ow, ow! - [Sean] Little more.
[Heather breathing heavily]
Is it just me, or did it get hotter in the last few seconds?
- [Dallas] Yeah. - [Sean] Gotta keep going.
[Heather] Yeah. Otherwise we'll die out here.
[Sean] Oh, [bleep]. There are tons of thorns and it's really hot.
[bleep].
[groans]
[Heather] I can't do this!
[Sean] Don't stop, don't stop, keep going.
[Heather] I can't do this, it hurts!
[Dallas] Relief is right here, Heather. You got it.
You got it. Got it.
[Heather] This is more painful than childbirth.
- [Dallas] That is intense. - [Heather] I have no skin left
on my [bleep] feet.
Heather's feet are just ruined,
uh, blisters, layers under that, blisters,
totally ripped up.
Um, it's not a good situation, so,
I'm thinking it's not very smart to continue on
and go all the way to,
you know, our main camp, which is still a ways out.
If we're not able to get there today, it's not the end of the world.
I'm thinking we're better off to split this up into two days
versus one, to preserve your feet, especially.
Soon as we can find the next bit of water,
- let's set up and split it up into a two-day deal. - Read my mind, man.
[Sean] We've come up with a Plan B.
It's not our ideal location on the map,
but, um, tomorrow morning we can get to our final destination.
- [Sean] Let's go. - [Dallas] Oh, ah!
[Dallas] Ow, oh, oh!
[hissing] Ohhh.
Right there, right there, right there.
- [Dallas] That was the worst one. - Oh, my God.
That's not what I wanna hear.
- [Heather] [bleep]! - [Sean] Yeah, that's the worst part.
- [Dallas] You got it, you got it. - [breathing heavily] [bleep]!
It's burning!
[gasping]
You got it.
- [gasping] - Give me your hand.
Oh, [bleep].
- [breathing heavily] - Good job.
My muscles are literally spasming., cramping.
I know I need to get some water in me
because my body is shutting down.
[Sean grunts]
[Heather] Oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, Sean.
I... ah.
- So sorry. - You're good. You're good.
- I'm so sorry. - You're good, you're good.
[Heather exhales]
My feet are cooked.
[cries]
[Sean groans]
Oh, dude, there's a water hole right ahead!
[Dallas] Shut the front door.
Oh, God. [gasps]
[groans]
[Sean] Oh, [bleep], that's hot.
Oh, oh, oh, God.
[Dallas] You gotta press hard on me.
[bleeping]
[bleep]
Oh, it's the weirdest cramps ever.
Let's fill that pot
- and get a fire, so we can drink. - [Sean groans]
[Heather] Are you guys gonna bring it back up here?
[Dallas] Yeah, I'll fill the pot
if you wanna find a spot to sleep.
- [Heather] A boma? - [Dallas] Yeah.
[Dallas grunting]
[exhales]
[breathing heavily]
[Heather] Oh, God. Please help me.
This is a [bleep] nightmare.
[Sean exhaling] Oh, thank God.
I'm going down like a fat man on a seesaw.
It's not even funny, like, this is brutal.
[Sean] We got a fire. Good job, all.
There's a lot of large predators here,
and we are definitely going to be on the menu tonight, so,
we need as much protection as we can.
For shade, we can For shade, we can
use the back right there.
It's a pretty steep fall behind the tree.
This will be safe for us to sleep tonight.
[Dallas] I'm so dehydrated.
My whole body's cramping up.
- [retching] - [Dallas] Oh, damn.
[retching] [bleep]
Damn it.
I'm just overheated, man.
Oh, I can't... [vomiting]
I'm just hurting from this extreme heat.
I can feel the effects of dehydration,
just feeling nauseated for a while.
[Dallas] Cramping up so bad. Oh... [breathing heavily]
[Heather] They're going down really bad, so I've gotta take up the team's slack.
And now I'm hot-footing it
trying to get this boma together
while the boys are trying to not...
...heatstroke out.
[vomiting]
Yeah, we're in serious danger.
Like, we have to get this boma built.
I really don't think I can do all this...
...lifting alone.
[vomiting]
[cawing]
[retching]
We're in serious danger. Like, we have to get this boma built.
I really don't think I can do all this...
...lifting alone.
[Sean] We're losing daylight, we gotta build a boma here soon.
Cramping up so bad. Oh...
[Sean] Take all your time you need, man.
[narrator] During periods of intense dehydration,
muscles can go into painful spasms.
Due to a lack of water and electrolytes.
[Heather] The dehydration is so intense
because the heat is so intense.
Sean, how's Dallas?
He said it's muscle cramps.
My whole body's cramping up.
[Sean] I'll get a fire going up here.
I want to relocate the fire away from the river
and closer to the boma, so we can boil some more water
and get some hydration in us for tonight.
You can see all these trees are jacked up by elephants,
there's elephants walking right through here.
That's real concerning.
How close to the fire is our perimeter going?
[Heather] Right outside of it.
[grunts]
We have an hour left of daylight.
We have to hurry and get a boma structure built up.
- We good? - [Sean] Yeah.
[Dallas] I'm so dehydrated.
[Sean] We're buttoned down, tightening our boma,
I feel miserable, but poor Dallas.
He's vomiting, and once the night hits,
we're stuck here till daybreak.
[vomiting]
[Dallas] I'm wrecked. It's really, really scary,
because I have to have water.
But I can't keep anything down.
I don't know if I can make it through this.
[vomiting]
[Heather speaking]
[Dallas whispering] Cramping so bad.
We have taken the express...
...elevator to hell.
[Dallas vomiting]
[Sean speaking]
Yesterday, that was the toughest thing I've ever done.
Now we're gonna press on
nice and early before the sun, uh,
comes up and starts baking us.
[Heather] Last night was total hell, I'm so glad that, uh, you are still here.
I'm, like, legit thinking that I don't know if I can make it.
- We're gonna make it. - We're optimistic about, uh...
...some good resources where we're going.
[Heather] Once we get there it's gonna be sick,
we're gonna catch fish.
I don't think that I would've made it
through Day 1 if I did not have both Dallas and Sean.
Dallas literally helped carry me.
Now I know I've got somebody that's got some muscle
to help me with some heavy lifting.
And Sean seems really cool.
I mean, I just met him, but,
uh, he's a stay at home dad, so this works out great.
I'm really starting to see all the good traits
that we can band together and be successful with.
Wow, we are moving so much faster today.
- [Dallas] Yeah, I think we have to. - [Heather] Incredibly faster.
[Dallas] I don't want to fall into the same scenario as yesterday.
[Heather] Oh, that was scary.
[Dallas] Newfound respect for those who make it 21 days,
if this is Day 2.
And I am ruined.
[Heather] The sun is rising higher in the sky, so we have to hurry.
[hoots]
[Dallas] My stomach is cramping
and convulsing.
I thought I was dying yesterday, like, last night.
Reminded me of heroin withdrawals.
You could take the pain away if you just got high.
If there is someone out there that's dealing with drug addiction,
just know that you can push forward.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel.
[Sean] Starting to feel that heat, but it's not unbearable.
- [Heather] Oh, my gosh, yes! - [Sean] What are you seeing?
[Heather] Water, fish, and fowl.
[Sean] Wonderful.
[mimicking gunshot]
I see areas for us to fish in.
I mean, this is like,
[mimicking choir]
There is a really good spot for a boma.
Oh, it's sandy, too.
- Sean! - Coming up, brother.
[sighs]
Fantastic.
[Dallas] Lot more comfortable than last night.
[Sean] This is absolutely amazing.
I think we're gonna take a little bit of rest, get some water,
and then we'll have the energy to make the boma.
[Dallas] I can make the fire if he's grabbing water.
[Sean] So now that we're here,
we still have snakes and scorpions we need to watch for.
There are a lot of dangerous things out here, they wanna eat us.
They don't get complacent. Every single minute of their life,
They are trying not to get eaten.
And that's the mindset we need to adopt now.
Our top priority is to fortify the shelter for our safety at night.
[Dallas grunting]
[Sean] We just drag this up and plug this gap.
- [Dallas] Oh, that's perfect. - [Heather] Yeah.
[Dallas] Not today, leopard.
[Sean] This is such a cool tree, this is like a treehouse, just...
If you look behind, like, this thing,
we could turn this into a seat or something,
or hang stuff up here. This is really cool.
In a weird way, that horrible Day 1,
I think, has set us up for success.
- [Heather] Today was so much easier. - [Sean] It was.
[Sean] After that first night, this is paradise.
This is amazing.
This is home for the next three weeks.
Whoo-hoo!
[animal howling]
[animals vocalizing]
It's our first night in a new boma.
You can hear the animals coming to life, so,
um, we might expect a little bit more visitors tonight.
[Dallas] Mmm-hmm.
There is something outside of the boma.
[Dallas speaking]
[Sean speaking]
[Heather speaking]
[whispering] This is really creepy.
[hyena sniffing]
There is something outside of the boma.
[hyena sniffing]
[whispering] Really creepy.
[Heather yelps] Ahh! Oh, my God.
[Sean in normal voice] Maybe he left something in this tree before we got here.
[Heather] [bleep] off.
Pretty sketchy.
[Heather] Just gotta keep the home fire burning.
[Dallas] Yup. My whole stomach is just cramping.
[Dallas] Yup. My whole stomach is just cramping
and convulsing.
[Heather] Oh, great.
- [Heather] Day 3, guys. - [Dallas] Yeah.
- [Sean] No kidding. - [Heather] We made it.
[Heather] I was so freaked out
- hearing the hyenas closer. - [Dallas] Right.
[Sean] Last night, we were definitely up listening to lots of hyenas,
so last night was definitely a little scary.
But, uh, we're gonna go thrive today.
Yeah, time to fish! Fish on.
I need to get some food on the table for us.
We haven't had anything to eat,
so I think getting food in their belly would really help.
Look at all the bait that's swimming around up there.
There's tons of bait.
[Dallas] Oh, that's gonna be perfect 'cause I'm desperate for food.
[Sean] Yeah.
[Dallas] I got a lot of hope this morning catching fish.
I'm used to eating a lot.
I've got a lot of muscle mass, and it's taxing
if you're not feeding it.
I was freaking starving this morning.
- [Sean] You get one? - [Dallas] Got another one.
[Sean] You got one? Awesome.
We are ready and set up to survive here,
and survive 'cause I know that there's fish here.
- [Dallas] I got a couple of crickets for bait. - [Heather] You got crickets?
- [Heather] You ready to catch some fish? - [Dallas] I am.
[Sean] I'm getting a fire going so we can boil some more water.
It's just really hard to catch up, uh, from dehydration.
So that is my top priority,
is cycling water, cycling water, and pushing water.
But I'm excited because I think we might catch some fish this morning.
And maybe have a fish fry for breakfast.
[Dallas] Sean's got a good fire going.
[Heather] Yeah. He's really good at making water and fire.
How far out can I get this?
It's not going far.
Take it, take it, take it.
Oh, oh, oh, oh!
No.
It's definitely something good-sized.
Even got my hook!
- [Heather] Oh, you bastard. - [Dallas] Oh, no.
[Heather] Oh, yeah, that's good, though, it means they're bigger fish.
All right, another hook, another fish.
We keep going.
I brought five hooks, so we're at four now.
For a fish to take this bigger hook,
I'm really curious just to see what kind of fish this is.
- [Dallas] You want me to try it? - [Heather] Yeah.
[Heather] This is a 40-pound braid test,
so it should be able to handle anything.
- [Dallas] Got a little tug. - [Heather] When it hits it,
pull like you're pulling its soul of its body.
- [Heather] You got it? - [Dallas] Fish on.
[Heather] Pull, pull, pull, pull, pull.
- [Heather] Fantastic! - [Dallas] Oh, yes.
- [Sean laughs] - [Heather] Yay!
[Dallas] Yes! [laughs]
[Sean] He pulled in a fish, we're eating today.
This is absolutely incredible. I'm sure it's gonna be delicious.
[Heather] He's already hit it.
- [Heather] Did you already hit it? - [Dallas] Yeah.
[Dallas] I'm waiting first, for him to...
[Heather] Oh, there we go, there we go, there we go! Got it?
- [Heather] Big one, big one, big one! - [Dallas] [bleep] big one!
- [Dallas] Yes! Catfish, baby! - [Heather] Yes!
- Awesome job. - [Dallas] Whoo-hoo!
[Heather] Get him. Get him, get him, get him.
- [Dallas] Oh, that one's big. - [Heather] That's a big one.
[Dallas] Oh! It's gone and took the... mother of pearl,
- that was a monster. - [Heather] And it took the hook.
[Dallas] Damn.
[Heather] These things are precious right now.
So far, we've lost several hooks.
So, that's a big problem.
I gotta be really cautious because we know we're limited.
Can we start cooking on both rocks?
[Sean] I don't see why not.
We're gonna boil one and the other one will be like a griddle.
Looking forward to getting some food in us.
[Heather] We're about to have some good fish filets.
[Dallas] I can't wait.
Ohhh!
- [Heather] Another one? - [Dallas] Broke the line. That was the big one again.
[Dallas] Dang it.
So I've got catfish fried up,
then we've got a fish soup.
- [Heather] How is it? - It's food.
- [Heather] It tastes like victory. - Yup.
[Dallas] We are feeling like we got a win.
Fish head soup.
Better than dirt water.
I'm very relieved that Heather is a professional fisherman.
Now it's pretty clear she's not only brought the right tool,
but she can actually use it as well.
So, I'm pretty hopeful that we'll continue.
So, I'm pretty hopeful that we'll continue
to be able to catch fish, but being out here,
it's a lot harder than I had expected.
Maybe it'll get a little bit better,
but I'm definitely feeling like I've gotten
a good dose of suffering in the last few days.
Not bad at all.
No, not bad.
[Heather] We are literally feasting.
Teamwork!
[Dallas hiccups]
[Dallas belches]
[Dallas shivers]
[Sean]
Just feeling weird.
[Heather] I'm always afraid you're gonna puke.
[Dallas] Oh, I'm starting to feel like
it might be coming.
- [Heather] Really? - Yeah.
[Heather] No way.
I thought you were better.
[Dallas vomits]
[Heather] Oh, no. Not again.
[Dallas groaning] Oh...
- [Heather] Are you gonna throw up? - [Dallas groans]
[Dallas] I don't think I have anything left.
I threw up everything earlier.
It's like, ooh, gotta go slow today.
[Sean] Poor Dallas.
I don't know how many times he vomited.
Um, if I had a nickel for every time, though,
I'd be able to fly us all home first class.
That guy is so freaking tough.
[Dallas] All the food that I had, all gone,
so it's really, really scary,
because I've got no food, no calories,
and no water in me.
So, the fish are ready. We just need crickets.
You'd think this would be riddled with crickets,
but it's hard to find them.
[Heather sighs]
Now the hunt is on.
I'd really like to get more protein on the table,
'cause I'm a little worried about Dallas.
[Dallas] Cricket. [hiccups]
[Heather] He's puking, and he can't stop.
Sean is Sean.
The water is his security blanket.
I wish Sean was doing more things.
It's very frustrating.
[Sean] I definitely need to focus
on pushing more water.
I feel bad I'm not able to help out more.
I'm trying to make up for it
[chuckling] by doing menial tasks around,
but I just need to push water.
We desperately need crickets.
We've gotta eat.
I know that we got water going, but we have to eat,
and we can't eat without crickets.
[Sean] Oh, that looks like it's about to boil.
I know my partner is frustrated,
but I believe the water is more important,
because I just can't even mentally function.
Dallas also needs to push the fluids,
because every night,
he's giving up all the fluids he took in,
so it's absolutely important, and someone's gotta do it.
[Dallas] Oh, stomach cramps.
Ooh. The old light-headedness just hit.
That was fun.
I'm just exhausted. Every step is a chore.
You stand up, and you feel a little bit light-headed.
It's just taxing.
It feels like my body is shutting down.
There's little grub worms I saw yesterday,
if we flip over wet rocks.
I don't know. We just gotta find something.
[groaning] Oh...
Ooh.
Pretty intense.
Hey, guys.
Uh, I am done.
I am so sorry, but I don't...
I don't wanna go anymore.
[Heather] You're tapping out?
Yeah.
[Heather] Seriously?
[Dallas] I apologize to letting you guys down.
I really need you.
Do you know that, right?
I think you'll regret this.
[Heather] I need you, man.
Like, you're really strong, mentally,
and I know you can make it.
If you can just give me one more day,
and then, let's go from there.
[Dallas] I'm just wrecked.
[bleep]
[Dallas] I am done.
I really need you.
Do you know that, right?
'Cause somebody making water every five seconds
isn't gonna cut it for me.
[Dallas grunts]
I need a teammate, man.
Please don't leave me like this.
I'm so sorry, but I don't... I don't wanna go anymore.
I'm ready to go.
[bleep]
[sighs]
What's going on, Dallas?
I am checked out.
I am tapping out of this challenge.
Are you sure?
There's nothing I can do to change your mind?
Nope. I am ready to roll.
[Phil] I'm sorry to hear that.
Please say goodbye to your partners,
- and we'll get you out of here. - Okay.
All right.
I wish you guys both tons of luck.
I know you'll kill it.
[Sean] It's super awesome to meet you.
- Awkward tree hug. - Yep.
[Sean] It's gonna be a lot harder without him,
like, just the team,
team dynamic.
This is terrible.
I know. The whole thing has been really terrible.
[Sean] I'm sad to see him go.
[voice shaking] I mean, we'd become friends.
I'm genuinely sad.
You left me all alone!
[Dallas] What I feel the most bad about
is leaving my partners out here.
I can see Heather and Sean not getting along as well
without me there.
It's a really wussy move,
but I just need to get out of here.
The old walk of shame.
Figured that I'd be able
to get through this, because of what
I've gotten through in the past,
making it through jails, prison, rehab, withdrawals.
I thought, "How bad could it be
to go camping naked for three weeks?"
But apparently, I was wrong.
[narrator] Dallas exits the challenge,
after only four days.
His PSR drops from a 6.3 to a 4.5.
Now it's just us. We got 17 days left.
[Sean] We got this.
Dude, it's gonna be hard as hell.
We're downsizing quick, man.
We're going down faster
than Kanye did for his presidential bid,
and my partner right now,
all he can do is that water and sleep,
but I need protein. I need something.
One day at a time.
[animal howls]
I'm trying to see how active the fish are
in this area compared to the other area.
This morning,
we're going fishing in a different location.
Come on.
I'm not really getting a lot of bites over here.
It's called "fishing," not "catching."
That's why it just takes patience.
- So, I'm gonna head down to that pond. - [Sean] Okay.
That way, we have something guaranteed.
Yeah. And I'll keep cycling water.
We need some food, bad.
Let's go.
I'm gonna be in survival mode,
using the survival tactics that I have,
and I'm gonna get us through the 21 days.
My hunger level is through the roof,
so I wanted to get a heart of palm to eat.
[grunts]
Palms are so useful in these kind of situations.
[Sean sighing] Oh, my gosh.
[Heather] It's like mashed potato consistency
on the inside, and that's gonna be great for our body,
for those starches.
[Sean] Oh, gosh, yeah.
Oh... With Dallas gone, that makes our job
a little more difficult out here,
but this sun is just kicking my butt.
- It is draining my energy. - [exhales]
Oh, man.
That's hot.
It's not that I'm lazy.
I just really want to finish this challenge,
and I need to be smart and efficient
with not overworking myself,
so that then, the entire rest of the day,
I'm just lying there worthless
because I've overheated myself.
I just don't want to go back to the way I was Day 1.
[Heather] Okay.
This is the heart I'm talking about, right here.
I'm gonna go back and cut that up.
See how nice that is?
[exhales] We'll have something to eat.
[Heather grunts]
Sean.
Sean!
- Huh? Yes? - [Heather] Wake up, baby. Come here.
What's up? What's up?
[Heather] I got something for you.
[Sean] Yeah?
Yes.
[Sean] You just eat it?
- [bites] - [chews]
I know!
Oh.
This is amazing.
This is actually one of the best finds so far.
This, right here, is so soft,
and supple.
Oh, my God.
[Sean] I'm just gonna take
a little lie-down for a minute,
and then, I'll go and get our water,
find some more wood.
[Heather] That's all he does.
All the time.
[Sean sighs heavily]
[elephant trumpeting]
[Heather]
[trumpeting]
[trumpeting]
[elephants trumpeting]
[trumpeting]
[Sean] Holy smokes.
This is really scary.
Like, it's potential death
versus completing the challenge.
It just became very real.
I'm out here to complete this challenge,
but going home mangled or in a body bag...
You know, I got a family.
I just need some time to pass.
I just have a lot on my mind.
I was just thinking about my dad.
[Heather] Oh, really?
[Sean] He had a pretty horrific death.
It was hard on the family, you know?
[Heather] Right.
[Sean] So, I'm thinking a bit from that,
[voice shaking] and so, I'm thinking about my kids.
[sniffles]
[Heather] What are you thinking?
I don't want them to have to get
bad news over the phone.
I'm not gonna tap out. I'm just...
This is really scary.
[Heather] I need you to be here with me,
And be just as ready to defend ourselves.
[breathing heavily]
[Sean] We got this.
I just... It is just a lot.
[Heather] "I'm not tapping out, but..."
"I'm not tapping out, but..."
Stop thinking about it!
He lost his dad, and I feel him.
I know what it's like to lose somebody,
but I don't want him gone.
I need you here for 21 days, man.
[trumpets]
[Sean] Hopefully, they're just moving out there.
[trumpets]
[squeals]
[Heather] I'm hungry, I want some protein,
We had the heart of palms, which was amazing.
But I'd like to put some protein
in our bellies this morning.
If you're seeing minnows... Yeah?
[Heather] ...maybe we could try to use those,
and use those as bait?
We can try. I'm all about trying.
They're quick and zippy.
[Heather] I'm having a problem sourcing bait,
and that's something I normally don't have to face
in my professional arena, because I use plastic lures.
[sighs in exasperation]
Well, we've lost a hook.
It's all right. I still got a hook left.
Our fishing hole is polluted now.
You can't go over there and take a bath
in the area you're gonna fish in.
We had a plan that we were gonna get minnows,
and instead, you went directly to where
we were gonna fish in, and walked in it.
That [bleep] the whole plan.
[Sean] I wasn't on the same page, then.
- I'm sorry. - I see that, man.
[Sean] Hey, I'm sorry about that.
I'll make sure I'm on the same page
- if I don't understand, okay? - Yeah.
This isn't me trying to screw your plan,
or just go off wandering.
I just, uh... I didn't...
I wasn't on the same page. That's all.
[Heather] He doesn't even know what he's doing.
His actual skills for survival are not there,
at all, and it shows.
There's a difference between being a survivalist
and then, like, having a breakdown
because you see elephants,
and thinking about your dad dying.
- Like, you know... - [Sean] Are you [bleep] serious right now?
- Yeah, actually. - [Sean] Get the [bleep] outta here, man!
I'm not getting the [bleep] out of anywhere!
And don't ever speak to me like that again.
- Ever. - You're gonna bring up my dad?
[sighs]
[Heather] I have a feeling this is how
the next two weeks are gonna go,
And I will [bleep] just walk off.
[Heather] There's a difference between being a survivalist
and then, like, having a breakdown
because you see elephants,
and thinking about your dad dying.
- Like, you know, like... - [Sean] Are you [bleep] serious right now?
You're gonna bring up my dad?
[sighs]
You just ruined a potential dinner for both of us.
We have personality issues and differences,
but we're gonna get through this together...
- [sighs] - [Sean] ...as a team.
- [sighs] - [Sean] I'm gonna boil some water,
and I'm your partner,
and you're my partner.
[Heather] We're also going to develop.
[Heather] We're also going to develop
your hunting and fishing skills,
so you're a pro by the time you leave here.
That sounds good to me.
But we're not gonna bring my dad up again.
[Heather] I'm sorry I flipped out.
I just was freaking out,
because at this point, we need proteins,
and I'm like...
[Sean] I got you.
I'm here with you for 21 days, okay?
[Heather] Yeah.
We've just gotta stick to a plan, man.
I'm not trying to boss you around, I'm really not.
I'm trying to teach you,
'cause you will be a badass fisherman and hunter
- if you just listen, you know what I mean? - [Sean] Yeah.
[Heather] Just don't take baths in our fishing spots.
Time to get some firewood.
Heather blamed me for not catching dinner.
You know, I just had a lot of stuff on my mind.
My dad is not something I talk about with people,
or I share, and unfortunately, I did, yesterday,
and then, uh, that was just thrown right back at me,
that was just thrown right back at me,
which is so [bleep] up,
but now, I can tell she's remorseful,
'cause she apologized for flipping out,
but it was just mind-boggling to me.
[Heather] I did apologize to Sean.
I wasn't trying to take away
from the impact of losing someone.
I was mad about other things,
so I will respect his loss, and I will respect the fact
that I know he's went through immense pain.
Yay! A porcupine quill.
If I could get ahold of a porcupine,
we would be eating that.
They taste amazing.
Ow. Ow. Ow.
I'm gonna go boot out another palm tree,
to make shoes for myself,
because I'm going out and doing everything for us.
What I'm about to boot out right now is gonna be
great cordage.
Cool.
I'm really thankful for that.
My feet hurt, bad.
These palms have the best cordage, you know?
Booting up a palm,
I realized how good this cordage was here,
compared to everything else...
[Sean] Let's cordage it up.
[Heather] ...and so, now we can make shoes,
so I started shredding it, and then,
I started making a bunch
of small, little lengths of cordage.
Make it super long, make it super thick.
I totally picture it. I got you.
Heather's cranking out these shoes,
but I came in here without shoes,
so I know I can make it without shoes.
I'll just be whipping cordage together,
because I just want to be a better help for my teammate,
make us closer and stronger as a team.
If it's real thick, are we good?
[Heather] Yeah! It's gotta be thick,
and it's gotta be something
that's gonna keep us separated from the heat,
and because there's so many thorns,
so what I've done is
taken the small pieces of cordage to make a circle,
over and over and over again, and lash them together.
We'll put it through right here.
This goes on the bottom, This goes on the bottom,
crisscross,
come around,
boom.
And we will be mobile!
Instead of being stuck in here from midday
to two and a half hours before sunset.
[Sean] This morning,
I do want to work on my deadfalls,
something I wish I'd got done a week ago...
All around here, there's lots of birds on the ground.
...so I'm kicking myself in the tail a little bit
for not having the energy these past few days,
but today, I'm trying to push myself a little more,
a little more out in the sun.
Right here.
I just want to catch some food.
It'll make my partner happy,
and that'll make the team happy.
[Heather] These shoes are
pretty important to me right now,
because I want to go start exploring other areas,
see if we can find other food sources.
[Sean] Check it out.
I'm gonna put a lot of bait down in here,
maybe on the top side of this rock,
so when it climbs on this trigger stick...
[clicks tongue] Got it.
And hopefully, I get some protein out of this.
[Heather] Okay, so we've got an animal kill here.
It's pretty much been devoured from a lot of the part,
but there's meat still left on here,
that I can scrape off to make some sort of bait balls.
Catfish love things that are rancid,
so hey, maybe this is a gift.
Look what I found!
- Oh, [bleep]. - [Heather] A fresh kill.
And I'm gonna use this meat right here,
then make some little bait balls,
for catfish.
[fake retches]
That's gnarly.
Let's go see how this works.
[Heather sighs]
I haven't caught anything since Day 3,
so we need this food badly. Like, we need protein.
[Sean] Come on, Heather. Catch a fish.
[Heather] You want to come try with me?
You can hold the reel.
[Sean] Yeah.
[Heather] Can you let some line out for me?
[Sean] Yeah.
[Heather] Something's biting on it.
[Sean whispering] Get it, girl.
[Heather] Hope you're not taking my bait.
Oh.
All right!
Hey, hey, hey!
Good job.
And I liked the way you jerked as far as you could,
- it's the way to go about it. - Man, I wasn't gonna waste any time.
[Heather] We caught a great fish.
This is such a big win, and so amazing,
To have a much needed meal.
[Sean] I liked that catfish
the way you cooked it the other day.
[Heather] Well, let's go ahead and gut him,
and then, maybe, if we have to,
we can make a soup head with it,
so we can get more nutrients in our body.
I gotta wash all this off. It's all covered in sand.
[Sean] Yeah.
[whispering] Nice job, man.
No! No!
He just got... No! Oh, God!
You're [bleep] kidding me.
[Heather] I gotta wash all this off.
It's all covered in sand.
[Sean] Yeah.
[whispering] Nice job, man.
[in normal voice] Let's finish that with...
No! No! He just got...
You're [bleep] kidding me.
[Sean] You're good.
[Heather] That was absolutely my fault.
You're good. We're hungry.
[Heather] We are hungry.
Things are going bad for me, and now I feel like
I'm literally on the hot grease.
All right. There we go.
[Sean] Heather is a professional fisherman.
That was a really dumb mistake,
and it's a dumb mistake that cost us protein
that we really, really could have used.
Next time, no mercy.
- I'm just gonna hack that [bleep]. - [Heather] I know.
I should have hacked him right then.
[Sean] If I let a live catfish go, uh,
how do you think she would have reacted?
[chuckling] There would have been some yelling and screaming.
I'm trying to be the bigger person,
but it's wearing on me.
[Heather] I'm down to my last hook,
so we gotta make this work.
Take it, take it, take it.
One, two, three.
And they took the hook.
[bleep]
I took a meal, a much needed meal,
out of my partner's mouth,
and now I don't have any more hooks.
That's so disappointing.
- But at least we know they bite on this bait. - Yeah.
[Heather] Can't always catch them,
that's why it's called "fishing."
[Sean] Uh, the big struggle right now
is just biting my tongue and being a gentleman,
'cause I don't want to say something I'll regret,
and let my emotions take control.
[Heather] I'm not gonna give up on fishing
just 'cause I ran out of hooks.
I'm just gonna figure out another way to do it.
[birds screeching]
[bellowing]
[Sean] I'm headed out to go check the deadfall trap,
and we'll see if it caught anything.
- Hey, yo! - We've got a winner.
Trap looks disturbed.
I don't care if it's rodent meat, bird.
We're about to get more food in us.
Nothing.
Damn it.
I'll set it back up.
[Heather sighs]
[Heather] I just need some food, man.
My body is just really coming down.
I'm taking in less calories in the last week
than a human should take in in one day.
I was supposed to come out here and thrive,
and it's a real blow to the ego
to feel myself get humbled like this.
I'm missing my kids.
I miss them bad. I miss their little faces.
I miss everything about them.
I just wanna...
I just wanna hold them, but I'm not gonna give up.
I want to come home with the honor
of making it to Day 21.
[Heather sighs]
We are at Day 11 right now.
If we can get some crabs, some fish,
or something of that sort,
I'd really like to get more protein on the table.
You know?
Okay, I'm gonna put a fish trap down.
- [Sean] All right. Be safe. - All right. Thanks.
I just need to cool off.
I need to find an acacia thorn before I go down.
Where is it found?
All right, let's go set a fish trap.
I've lost my hooks, a little down about that,
but I'm being positive and push through.
I am not gonna sit back and be complacent.
I'm doing this.
[grunts]
There are some primitive things that I can do.
Here's a primitive J hook, using some acacias.
That's how quick you can make one real quick.
There's a crocodile right there, moving.
See that? It's about three meters long.
Man, if I'm not careful,
I'm gonna end up being lunch for that crocodile.
This is very scary, because I'm out here
doing all this stuff all by myself,
and this is a prime example
of when you really need your partner with you,
because somebody needs to watch my back.
All he can do is build shelter and boil water.
There's always an excuse.
I'm so mad, and I'm so frustrated.
It's basically a trigger snare.
I'm gonna take a Y branch, put that down,
and then, I'm gonna bend over a tree
attached to the trigger mechanism.
Whenever something bites on it,
automatically it'll fly up in the air with the branch.
Boom, you set the hook on the fish.
Absolutely putrid.
So, we'll throw this out with the primitive hook,
into the water with this rancid meat.
We'll come back and check this in the morning.
Let's get out of here
before the ticktock comes up and gets me on the bank.
[Sean] I didn't come out here
to just kind of lie around and conserve energy.
I had to adjust my strategy once I got out here.
I've been pushing more fluids,
and that hydration has just been night and day,
really helping me out, and I feel a lot better.
I want to explore other places that we haven't explored yet.
I mean, you patrol a bigger area,
you're going to come across stuff,
but you have to be there in the first place.
I want to look for materials, I want to look for a nest,
I want to look for something that fell out of a tree,
um, fresh figs that haven't been
already cleaned by the monkeys.
I see fresh scat, from probably a baboon,
maybe a monkey,
so [sighs] once they get ripe, they come and take it.
Oh, I see some ripe ones up there.
[exhales]
Oh, there's a ton!
But I gotta climb pretty high up in the tree
to get those figs, so I'll fall.
It's not just gonna hurt,
but it's probably gonna fracture something,
or multiple things,
but with any reward, you gotta take a risk.
[exhales]
[exhales]
I don't know about this.
[grunts]
[grunts]
Oops.
This is higher than I realized.
[breathing heavily]
[exhales]
Oh, yeah.
[grunts]
Holy crap.
[bleeping]
[Sean] Argh.
[exhales]
[breathing heavily]
[bleeping]
[grunts]
[Sean] When I look down, it is a vertical drop.
Oops.
There's a very real risk of falling.
[exhales]
[exhales]
[breathing heavily]
[exhales]
[sighing in exhaustion]
[breathing heavily] Oh, shoot.
That was super intense. Almost fell out of the tree.
[breathing heavily] Look at all these figs.
I hope Heather appreciates it.
It's not the protein we want, but this is a big win,
just adding another thing to our menu out here.
[exhales]
How's it going?
[Heather] Good. How are you?
[Sean] I climbed a tree.
Oh, yeah?
Baboons got pretty much all the ripe figs.
I got some almost ripe ones.
How many figs do you have?
- Uh, I'm not sure. - What's your head count on your figs?
What's your inventory? Let me ask you that.
One, two, three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven.
Cool. Can I get half of those?
[Sean] You can have more than half, yeah.
No, no, no. I don't want to take more than half.
It's really frustrating, 'cause I need some protein,
and I became a vegan.
Not by choice.
[Sean] My partner is incapable of saying anything
without throwing in a jab.
I'm working my tail off
to get her water, to get her stuff.
I didn't do anything to her, I never wronged her.
It's just a negative, toxic cloud.
Bitter as heck.
They weren't in season yet.
[Heather] Let's go check the fish trap.
I'm in a survival situation.
I'm gonna need protein, and I need somebody that can walk up to a bird
and snap its neck and not cry.
So I'm doing this without anyone's help.
The fish trap has not been triggered.
We still got a line in the water.
No fish on it.
There's a warthog crossing the river.
That's a big boy.
Unfortunately, we don't have the materials to hunt and kill.
I've been trying to ignore Heather's snide, underhanded comments.
She's taking for granted my time and my energy.
These have some orange in 'em.
Getting food for her, getting water for her...
I'm just trying to take the high road and be a positive person,
um, and not let someone so negative just bring me down to their level.
[Heather] I'm gonna look in these isolated ponds first...
...and see as they're shriveling up if I can find...
...some little fish in there.
There's a bubble coming from that one.
And it's a pretty active hole.
It really kills me I didn't come here earlier with my hooks.
I don't want to get in the water because it's super murky.
I know there's crocodiles here,
so it's never safe to enter the water.
These fish are trapped in it.
I've heard the local fishermen use a poisonous tree here
called the Tamboti to catch fish.
They put branches in small ponds and a toxin in the bark
stuns the fish, making them float to the surface.
This would be the perfect place to try Tamboti sap
to see if it will zap the fish for us.
Now I just need to find a Tamboti tree out here.
[Heather] Yo.
- What's up? - [Sean] How was it?
[Heather] I found some isolated ponds...
- [Sean] Oh, nice. - [Heather] ...that have a ton of fish activity.
That would be the perfect place to try that Tamboti sap
to zap the fish for us.
[Sean] Cool.
[Heather] The water's really murky over there, too...
- [Sean] Oh. - ...in those holes.
[Sean] How deep was it?
- The water's murky. - [Sean] Mmm-hmm.
So you can't tell.
[Sean] Well, there's murky water here and you put a stick in it, I don't know.
I can't get out there.
[Sean] I just don't know. I wasn't there, so...
Well, I can't get out there.
I mean, if it's murky, I can't get out 20 feet.
[Sean] Okay.
[Sean] You know, every time I ask you a question
you give me some attitude.
[Heather] I mean, I just told you I couldn't see it.
And you said, "Well, we use a stick."
I... I couldn't get out there.
That's the answer. I really couldn't get out there.
I can't go out 20 feet in murky feet of water...
- in the water. - [Sean] I didn't know it was 20 feet,
I haven't been out there.
It's just your answers are always
so... just condescending and aggressive.
- It's not necessary. - It's not condescending and aggressive,
I think you're just a hypersensitive person, period.
You cried when we saw elephants.
Are you seriously going there?
[Heather] Yeah, I mean I'm not afraid of these things.
Heather, I am done putting my energy into feeding you
and giving you water only for you to [bleep] on me every day.
You talk [bleep] about me.
- No, no... - [Heather] Don't worry about it.
- Then you care of yourself, I'll take care of myself. - You talk...
- [Heather] That's how we'll handle it. - That sounds good.
- [Heather] Cool. - We are on the same page.
[Heather] Perfect.
[Sean] This was just the straw that broke the camel's back.
I had to finally speak up, because it's every single day
that she talks down to me, and it's so demeaning.
When I'm doing this to try to support her.
I don't disrespect her and talk to her like that.
All I want is the same treatment.
[Heather] In order to respect his opinion, I'd have to respect him.
You can't blow up like that when you don't bring anything to the table.
What do I bring to the table? The whole [bleep] table.
[Sean] I finally told Heather I'm tired of spending my time and my energy
getting water and getting food for her,
Then she gives me [bleep] for it.
It's just so disrespectful.
I just have a big weight lifted off my chest.
But I still have to live with her,
literally feet apart and be a roommate with her.
[Heather] Sean told me that we're on our own,
that he's no longer gonna get me water.
You know, whatever.
My heritage is Native American and white.
In the Cherokee tribes, going and getting water
was given to pre-adolescents or elderly people that couldn't function well.
Just saying.
[Sean] This is, uh, one of the first big storms coming in during the day.
We haven't had any heavy rain yet,
but, uh, it is the start of the rainy season,
so we'll see what's about to happen.
I love it when the wind gets crazy like this!
I, for one, am super excited about all this wind.
This honestly feels like home,
I feel like it's hurricane weather again,
We're running around prepping.
I'm getting wood.
[Sean] The weather, the way it is,
firewood's absolutely critical and I'm gonna start gathering as much as I can
to keep those embers going through the night,
but for my own fire.
[Heather] Looks like the storm stopped.
All that fuss for nothing.
Now if we could find some of that Tamboti
to try to get some fish, that would be ideal.
You know, Sean's not gonna help me do anything.
I'm pretty much on my own anyway,
so he made that call.
If you're not giving me water, I'm not giving you anything, bro.
You're gonna figure it out on your own.
So I found it. This is Tamboti.
Ah!
Tamboti.
That white sap right there?
This is the bad boy I've been looking for.
I'm gonna cut some of these branches down,
drag 'em over to that isolated pond,
drop 'em in there, and hopefully the next day
we're having fish.
[Sean] I've been cranking out some deadfall traps.
I wanna catch some protein for myself.
[Heather] I'm just waiting on the knife to go cut that Tamboti.
I was trying to get that done early in the morning
before it gets hot.
I've had this plan for days.
[Sean] I didn't realize you needed to take the knife with you,
I didn't realize you were waiting for it now,
so I'll make the rest of this this afternoon.
You can go beat the heat.
[Heather] Okay, cool. Great, thanks.
[sighing]
[Sean] Knife's by the exit.
[Heather] Okay, thank you.
[grunting]
[Sean] It's just like this with everything with her.
You can't talk to her, you can't engage in conversation
without her interrupting you.
So rude, so inconsiderate, but I'm stuck in this boma with her.
[inhaling]
Just trapped.
I spent the first half of my challenge
trying my best to support her.
I'm out here to ground with nature
and she's ruined it for me.
So, I'm strongly considering moving out.
[Heather] Oh, wow.
Look at all the sap that comes out of it.
If I can find a... a new boma that's suitable today,
I'll be out of here before she gets back.
[blowing softly]
[Sean] I spent the first half of my challenge
trying my best to support her,
but I'm stuck in this boma with her.
Just trapped.
So, if I can find a... a new boma that's suitable today,
I'll be out of here before she gets back.
[Heather] This is Tamboti.
The sap coming out here, it's dangerous.
If it gets into your eyes, it could cause you to go blind.
I'm not feeling so good right now.
I have a really bad headache and I feel like I'm about to pass out.
I don't think I want to touch this stuff anymore.
I'm gonna lay down for a minute.
I don't feel good at all.
As soon as I started throwing away this stuff,
I feel seriously disoriented.
It was weird. I almost started walking that way.
- Hey. - [Sean] Hey, what's up?
[Heather] I'm not feeling good at all.
I don't know what's wrong.
[Sean] You think from the Tamboti, or...
I just feel all disoriented and I feel like I'mma pass out.
It could just be exhaustion.
- It could be. - I have... yeah.
I mean, I have a serious headache.
- I hope you feel better. - [Heather] Thanks.
[Sean] I'm not gonna ditch her if she's potentially sick.
I'm just gonna rest for a minute.
[Sean] Everything she's describing right now
is exactly how I felt my first week out here,
after that brutal insertion.
She needs to rest, she needs to hydrate,
she needs food.
All the things that I needed she [bleep] on me for.
Yeah, karma.
It'll come and get ya.
[Sean] Unfortunately, this morning, Heather's still sick.
And of course I'm never gonna be happy
when someone is sick regardless of how they've treated me.
We're going to give up on the Tamboti plan just to be safe.
I'm gonna go see if I can catch a fish,
catch some protein for us.
I made some cordage.
I also made a good, strong fishing line.
I carved out a little, uh, primitive gorge hook.
Tie it off in the middle like this...
...slide it up like this.
Your bait's on here when the fish bites it...
...and it pulls it down.
It turns like this in its mouth.
I just need some bait.
I just caught a praying mantis.
[whispering] There's so many fish in here.
Swimming right over it.
I see them eating stuff off the surface.
They just swam right by this thing.
They're just swimming around it.
Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck fishing.
All right.
I'm gonna call this.
I'm gonna go put that praying mantis up on my, uh,
deadfall trap just to add some bait to it.
[Heather] My body is just really coming down.
Maybe similar to how Sean was feeling.
His was acclimation, whereas mine is the fatigue
and maybe the Tamboti tree.
Maybe I've been too harsh to Sean about it,
and maybe I've been taking Sean for granted.
Thank you for the water. I really appreciate you.
[Sean] You're very welcome.
I'll get you a refill whenever you need it.
[Heather] There's a lot that's on my mind.
Africa's been a beast.
Definitely the hardest challenge I've ever faced in my life.
I'm ready to see my kids,
just hug 'em, and tell them how much they really mean to me.
And I regret any time I've ever told them that I was busy.
And I'm not gonna take any of those moments for granted anymore.
[Heather] I feel a lot better today,
but Africa's changing me.
I'm becoming more humble.
Just putting one foot in front of the other
seems to be an accomplishment.
Miss Overachiever's gonna have to cut that list down to one thing a day,
so I can continue, uh, without falling flat on my face.
I'm trying to pace myself.
And I'm trying to get things done,
but at the same time my body's just, like, telling me,
"Girl, stop."
[Heather] Ooh, ooh! Look at the elephants.
They're right across the... [whispering] Sean, Sean!
- [Sean] Hmm? - Sean, get up!
- Look at the elephants right across the tree. - Oh, I see 'em!
[Heather] Wow... [Sean] Oh, it's a bunch.
[quietly] This is freakin' awesome.
What a spectacular view.
[Sean] So cool.
[Heather] Can you just imagine that thing charging at us?
I have imagined it.
- [Heather chuckling] Oh! - You might recall.
Terrified.
[Sean chuckling softly]
[Heather] This is a little connection bonding moment
with my partner right now.
I'm glad that I have him here with me.
- [Sean] Look at the little baby coming up from behind. - [Heather] I know, look!
[excitedly] Look, look, look, look, look!
- Look, she's copying her daddy! - I know.
And that's what that elephant's about.
That's what that herd is.
They don't know anything but to protect their family.
They protect their children fiercely...
...as any parent should.
And...
I'm days away from seeing my babies.
But I'm gonna be just like those elephants.
I just wanna kiss my babies.
[Sean] I know Heather's been thinking a lot about her little girls
as we get closer to the end.
I miss them like I miss water on my lips.
Oh!
[Sean] And my kids and my family are on my mind,
and I'm realizing Heather's my family out here.
We've got each other's backs, and we're taking care of each other,
and I feel bad for ever thinking that I would leave her behind.
[whispering] So cool.
[Heather whispering] They're beautiful.
I love this.
[Heather] I'm gonna check my fish trap.
I definitely need some carbs in me
and get a little bit of energy.
[Sean] I'm gonna keep water cycling, cycling, cycling.
[Heather] Cool, thanks!
Keep the home boma fires burning.
[Sean chuckling softly]
I don't know what happened. It's weird.
I just feel close to Heather now.
After those elephants,
the toxic cloud of negativity is pretty much gone.
All that bitterness and pettiness I had been harboring these past few days,
I don't know what happened, but it's been lifted.
[Heather] Sean and I are working really well together.
I didn't realize until right now.
We just have different survival styles,
But it doesn't mean we're enemies.
It just means we have different opinions.
Hmm...
It did get triggered, and something actually ate...
...the hook, and the bait.
But... you just keep trying.
It's trial and error.
My traps aren't working.
Sean's deadfall isn't either.
So I need to go get me some heart of palm
so I can put some sort of carbs and something in me
that's gonna give me a little bit of a boost.
Winner winner, chicken dinner.
[mumbling] Oh, fantastic.
He looks a little peeved.
There's a hippo staring at me.
And he is not happy that I am banging away
at a palm tree.
Look buddy, I'm not trying to... [hippo sputtering]
Oh yeah, now he's making noise.
I need this resource, bad.
Let's see what he does.
If he goes underwater, I may have to back up.
The palm tree is hanging over the edge.
I mean, one false slip, I'm falling in this water.
They're fast, they go 40 miles an hour.
Super territorial.
Oh, [bleep].
Yikes.
I'm having to...
...quickly get out of the area.
Now you see what I'm dealing with.
It seems the crocodiles are the big threat.
No way.
Those hippos can actually chomp a crocodile in half.
It's not worth me getting a heart of palm right now.
That's scary.
I can see him again.
I'm doing it anyway.
Whoo!
Hungry Hungry Hippo wasn't taking me down today.
- Look, look, look. - [Sean] Awesome!
Hey, you want some heart of palm?
[quietly] Oh, yeah. Thank you.
[Heather] Check that out.
So good.
- [Sean] I really appreciate the offer. - [Heather] You're welcome.
[Sean] It's a super cool peace offering.
Heather just spent a lot of time and energy
booting out a palm.
I know that took a lot for her to do.
Um, that's a real big thing of her,
because I know she really needed it,
and she really earned it.
[Heather] I'm gonna eat in the dirt.
I don't care, dirt don't hurt.
[Sean exhaling]
- [Heather] Oh, my God! It's cold. - [Sean] Oh, man.
Uh-oh.
[thunder rumbling]
Holy [bleep]!
[Heather] I mean, the skies look pretty dark.
[Sean] All around, I'm looking 360, it's all the same.
[Heather] Yeah.
It is pouring down rain,
and it has started raining in here.
And I am soaked, covered in mud,
trying my hardest to keep my fire from going out.
[softly] It's still raining.
It's still cold, it still sucks.
There's no way to get out of the rain.
[Heather] I didn't come this far to just come this far.
But gosh!
What a nightmare!
[Sean] The rain and the wind all combined
can absolutely take us out of this challenge.
[Heather] I'm freezing, I'm shaking,
I'm afraid I'm gonna go into hypothermia.
I'm miserable. Absolutely miserable.
I hope that the whole night's not gonna be like this.
This is truly awful.
Oh God, please help me.
[Heather] Another glorious day here in South Africa.
Come on down to Limpopo River.
[breathy female voice] Lim-po-po!
[Heather] Enjoy a nice holiday butt-naked on the river,
infested with crocodiles and hippos.
If that's not enough action for you,
just wait till leopards come out and rip up your neighbors
as they shriek and cry.
- And you know what I love? - [Sean] What?
[Heather] When we go down to the spa and we get in water
with baboon feces.
That's how we wash off!
[Heather] And you know what else we do with that water?
[Sean] We drink it.
[Heather] That's the kind of adventure waiting for you
down here in Limpopo.
- Come on down! - So hot.
[breathy female voice] Lim-po-po!
[Sean speaking]
[Heather speaking]
I've had to keep these coals going...
...so I can have something and not have hypothermia 'cause it's so cold.
And just when you think it couldn't get any worse,
the fire has actually burned through my bag.
I'm miserable. Absolutely miserable.
[animals chirping loudly]
[Heather] I can't even make this up.
But the rain has stopped and...
[animals chirping loudly]
We've been here for three weeks.
It's never been like this.
The night before we're leaving,
every single animal is going crazy right now.
It sounds like a car alarm's going off.
I'm assuming maybe the rain's caused this.
I'm still leaving in the morning.
[Heather] It's the morning of Day 21.
I'm getting ready to get up out of the biatch!
It's extraction morning.
I did not sleep last night.
It was, uh, a beast of a night.
That was apocalyptic.
Africa... there's no telling what she's gonna deliver.
[Sean groaning]
I'm ready to go. How about you?
[Heather] I am ready to get out of here.
[Sean] We wanna go quick,
but we also want to go slow and steady so we're safe.
- You know what I mean? - [Heather] All right, sounds good.
There is a part of me, obviously,
that is terrified that today will end up somehow...
...like insertion.
[Sean] I know I've lost a lot of weight,
definitely know I'm malnourished,
and so I am feeling the fatigue.
I just do not want a repeat of that insertion.
[sighing]
Aw, the sun's coming out.
- [Heather] Okay. - [Sean] This is a sign.
Here, let's take a look at the map, figure out where we're going.
Okay.
- Okay. - Okay, we're right around here, correct?
[Heather] Right.
Extraction... that hill right over there.
Extraction... that hill right over there
looks to be about where extraction's gonna be.
So that's a good landmark for us to start heading towards.
[narrator] Heather and Sean must dig deep,
walking five miles to their extraction point,
avoiding herds of elephants.
The bulls weigh upwards of 14,000 pounds,
and protective mothers will trample anything
that seems a threat to their calves.
The pair must escape the rain-slicked ravines of the Limpopo.
Then, after a mile in the open and thorny bush,
they'll face a rocky climb to a plateau patrolled by leopards
and crawling with venomous scorpions.
Upon ascending, the pair must trek on
until they reach a dirt road where they will be rescued.
[Heather] Let's go ahead and cross over there,
where it's the easiest to get up, you know?
[Sean] Yeah, no, sounds good.
[Heather] I'm a little sketched right now.
You see that up in the sky?
[Sean] Clouds are moving pretty quick.
[Heather] We came in on the hottest day possible,
and we're leaving when it's super cold.
Ironic.
[Sean] Yeah, this is slippery, so careful.
- [Heather] Watch for scorpions and snakes. - [Sean] Yeah.
[Heather] Oh, and it's so cold. That wind is blowing.
[both] Crazy.
- Careful, this is slippery. - Okay.
My heels are slipping a little.
You got it.
Take your time, slippery rocks!
[Heather] I am looking around at every single step I'm taking right now,
because my shoes that I've made are not for wet weather,
and they're just barely hanging on.
Ah! [bleep].
- [Sean] You okay? - [Heather] [bleep]. Ow, ow.
[Sean] Got it?
[Heather softly] Yeah.
[Sean] All right, yeah. Take your time. Slow and steady.
[Heather] Yeah.
[Sean] All right, this looks slipper...
Ooh, Oh, [bleep].
[Heather] You okay?
[Sean] Yeah, no, I just wasn't expecting it.
[Heather] Oof.
[Sean] There we go.
Look at these prints.
What is that?
[Heather] Leopard prints.
[Sean] Gotta keep our head on a swivel.
We can't get so focused on our final destination.
[Heather] We have to be extremely cautious.
[Sean] Getting into thorn country.
[Heather] No man's land.
[Sean] Man, there is no path through here.
Yeah, I'll go first.
- [Sean] All right. - [Heather] Since you don't have shoes on.
Ow.
Here's a knob berry, be careful.
[Sean] Oh, I see it. Thank you.
[Heather] And then you're about to get into some acacias really bad.
[Sean] All right, thanks.
[Heather] What is that?
[Sean] I don't... I don't know.
[Heather] Just be cautious.
[Heather] I am exhausted.
We've been walking what seems like forever.
[Sean] Now we gotta start climbing.
A lot of rocks...
[Heather] Ow! That rock I just stepped on is really loose.
[Sean] All right.
This is really steep.
[Sean] The concern of snakes, scorpions, things like that,
it's a bigger threat here.
[Heather] I do feel the burn in my legs. Do you?
[Sean] Yeah, feeling it.
[Heather] Definitely an African StairMaster.
[Sean] Oh, my gosh. Look at this view.
[quietly] Oh, wow.
You see that lush, green strip where the riverbed is?
All the trees?
[Heather] That's our home,
- or was. - [Sean] I know. Feeling nostalgic.
[Heather] We had our own little treehouse.
[Sean] And it kept us safe.
It's a weird feeling to, uh,
spend so much time somewhere, even though it was,
you know, miserable, hot, cold, raining, naked.
It's so pretty. All around, 360.
[Heather] It is beautiful.
[Sean] I am gonna miss it.
It's just one of those things I can't describe to anyone
except for two other people, Heather and Dallas.
- [Heather] You ready? - [Sean] I'm ready, let's go.
We're almost there.
[Sean softly] All right.
[Heather] My legs are tired. How about you?
[Sean] They're feeling fatigued, but ah, we're getting close.
I can feel it.
It's starting to level out up ahead.
[Heather] Is it?
[Sean] Keep your eyes peeled for some sort
of obvious sign of an extraction point.
Oh, my God. This is opening up.
I think this may be it.
Oh, my God. Is that a road?
It is a road!
- Oh! - [Sean] It is?
[Heather] Ah! Yes!
Yes!
Oh, my God. I'm gonna cry.
[Sean] Oh, my goodness.
Oh, my God!
I can't even believe this is happening.
I feel like I'm literally in a dream right now.
[Sean] You can't prepare yourself for the emotions that come.
It's sad to leave this place, but now I've got my family and my home on my mind.
We're family now.
Yeah.
[Sean] Dallas, brother,
if you would've held out one more day, man,
I know you could've made it.
[Heather] You would've loved this, Dallas.
[Sean] If Dallas had stayed, it would've been different.
He and Heather had clicked a little,
so I think it would've been easier.
Obviously, we went our little separate ways,
but somehow we came back together.
[Heather] I couldn't be happier that we're walking out of here together.
Sean and I have definitely grown as partners.
I regret a couple of ways that I talked to Sean.
I'm very blunt and honest,
and maybe I could've been a little bit gentler with him.
But we still were somehow... we came together as a team.
It was a... a pull, a tug, sometimes a push and a shove.
- Yeah. - But... we needed each other.
And now, we're both gonna go see our families.
Coming out here, it has changed me emotionally,
it has changed me physically.
It's made me realize the importance of family.
It made me realize that I don't have to be 100 percent,
or actually, 200 percent career-driven all the time.
Maybe it's time I actually stop and smell the roses.
[narrator] Over the course of the 21 days,
Heather lost 10 pounds.
Her PSR rises from 7.3 to 7.7.
[Sean] Sherean, my wife, who tapped on Day 4,
the best advice she gave me... "Just wait another day."
If you can do one more day, you never know what will present itself.
Being able to take that advice really, really helped me
to ground myself with nature, have a spiritual experience with the Earth Mother,
and, uh, just to process grief.
And now I feel super close to the Earth,
which made me feel close to my dad.
[narrator] Over the course of the 21 days,
Sean lost 35 pounds.
His PSR rises from 6.5 to 6.9.
[Sean] The fact that I made it out here,
I know my dad would be proud,
but the thing he'd be proudest of
is just that I did my best to be a gentleman and take the high road,
and that's more important than making it 21 days.
Your honor, your integrity, your character,
that's really what's important.
I love you, Dad.
[Heather] Oh, man. It's been awesome.
I love it! It's been real!
- It's been awesome. - It's been real!
Whoo!
