Not your friend anymore.
-[door handle clicks] -[calm instrumental music]
[traffic humming]
[hooter beeping]
-[suspenseful music] -[footsteps scuffling]
[suspenseful instrumental music]
-Nice place. -[footsteps scuffling]
Hey, there!
-Oh, shit! -[body thuds]
[feet scuffling]
The fuck is that?
I'm looking for a guy.
5' 9", blonde kinda looks like a fucking retard.
Is that who I'm looking at right now?
[suspenseful instrumental music]
Maybe.
You look like a couple of retards.
Driving this far to get your beat.
[Ricky chuckles]
That's not gonna happen.
Listen, no one's late in paying, Calvin.
You mean shithead?
[Ricky chuckles]
[towel shuffling]
Danny, right?
Yeah. Yeah, that's my fucking name.
My name's Ricky. Calvin's my boss.
He pays me to collect from douche bags like you.
[sighs] Well, I'm sorry to hear
you work for that piece of shit.
Second of all, yeah, we have a huge misunderstanding
'cause you are definitely looking
for my ex-girlfriend, Dawn.
Yep, yeah, 'cause she and Calvin are really close.
Real close, yeah, but she's tough to catch, man.
So, you know.
Well, Dawn's the one that told us about you.
Said you got a bunch of money, you stole it from her bank.
Well, hence why? She's my ex, Ricky.
[chuckles] Do I look like a bank robber?
Listen, I got zero fucks to give.
-Okay, man. -So, just gimme a reason.
Excuse me fellas, you got a problem here?
Who the fuck is she? Your mom?
I'm the homeowner,
and right now I'm seeing breaking and entering,
illegal possession of a firearm,
and possibly terroristic threats.
So, I'm gonna ask you kindly to
get the fuck outta my house.
Lawyer.
Sure, well, Danny, I think
we'll be seeing each other again very soon.
I'm looking forward to it, Ricky.
We'll let ourselves out.
I see you Ricky, yep,
-and, -[suspenseful music]
whatever that thing is, nice to meet you too.
-[heels clacking] -Fuck you.
Drive safe. Good to see ya.
-[heels clacking] -[Danny chuckles]
Well, that was something. [chuckles] Sorry.
He had a gun. Danny.
He's my buddy Ricky from high school.
Okay. He does that shit all the time.
-It's a prank. -Cut the stupid.
He was looking for money.
Drug money. Are you back to selling pot again?
Never heard this one before.
Maybe I was, Corinne, maybe I was, maybe I wasn't.
But that was not my connect. That was Dawn's.
All right, I don't know
-what he was doing here. -Okay, great.
All right, then you know what?
Your new little career, if I see another gang banger
or a druggie, or some thug anywhere near this house,
-you are out of it- -Fine. Corinne, fine.
Okay, I'll get outta your hair again. Okay.
I've done it before.
I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, all right?
-God. -Danny.
What?
[footsteps scuffling]
-What? -[dramatic instrumental music]
Danny, I raise you, honey.
I love you.
[dramatic instrumental music]
[footsteps scuffling]
[hands thudding]
-[upbeat instrumental music] -[heels clacking]
-[Danny vocalizes] -[guitar strings twanging]
[upbeat instrumental music]
Well, you actually sound like you know what you're doing.
[guitar strings twanging]
Well when you listen to Allman Brothers
your entire life, thanks to you, Pops, yeah.
I only played the best for you.
[uplifting instrumental music]
Is Corinne here?
Yeah. Yeah, she's cooking dinner, I think.
Hmm? I didn't see her.
[uplifting instrumental music]
Probably a good thing.
[Brian sighs]
Uh, it was kind of a shitty day.
[birds chirping]
Why is that? What happened?
Those guys I told you from Boaz.
Yeah, one of them showed up.
Look, it was a misunderstanding, Dad,
but I don't think Corrine took it that way.
That figures.
[uplifting instrumental music]
[Brian sniffs] Ah.
You know, you gotta get rid of all these derelicts
and all these fools that are hanging around
and fucking up your life.
Okay, just be done with it, Danny. Okay?
I know, Dad.
That's why I'm here.
I've been wondering why you're here,
because it looks to me like you're just strumming away
on your little guitar and drinking all my wine.
[uplifting instrumental music]
Mean, I'm doing a lot of that too. All right?
But hey, I helped Corrine with her case today.
Oh, that's good. And that's progressive.
Be a detective.
You know, Danny, life is not a joke.
You got drug dealers coming after you.
-I know. -You gotta get
your life together.
I get worried about you.
I know, Pops.
[uplifting instrumental music]
As far as I'm concerned, you can stick around.
[uplifting instrumental music]
As long as you keep listening to the Allman Brothers.
Always.
-[birds chirping] -[footsteps thudding]
-[people chattering] -[footsteps thudding]
Let's take a look at this.
And there they are.
The founding fathers.
If they only knew what was happening now. [laughs]
Everybody loves to quote
or more often misquote
our founding fathers, cherry picking their words,
and looking for present day controversies.
Words like democracy and virtue.
They used to mean something else way back then.
So, does a word like wonderful.
Wonderful derives from the word wonder,
which meant to people like James Madison,
-surprise and mystery, and... -It's not the greatest one.
-It's magical. -Wonderful is
a wonderful word, as far as I'm concerned.
Do you mind taking your feet down there, son?
[students chattering]
You can take the other one down too.
I'm glad you find that funny. Thank you.
Anyway, like I said, if anybody has anything else to say
or any questions, that's about it.
You all wanna go now.
I appreciate you being here today. Thanks everyone.
[Student] We are over that same shit.
[Student] I can sort of discuss-
-You know what would strike- -Guys, come forward.
[Student] I love it-
[Student] I wanted to [indistinct].
-Hey, hey, hey. -Whatever.
-Hold that accent. -Yeah, man.
-We know that. -[students chattering]
[upbeat instrumental music]
[cellphone ringing]
[cellphone ringing continues]
[suspenseful instrumental music]
Yeah, Dawn, why are you calling me?
Do you think you can just run off with all the money?
[suspenseful instrumental music]
-[material shuffling] -[suspenseful music]
Yeah, yeah, okay.
First of all, I did not run off.
I'm at my fucking parents' house.
[suspenseful instrumental music]
I'm here for the money.
[Danny] Oh, this is my parents' house.
-I don't give a fuck. -Okay?
They have fucking neighbors.
-I don't care, Danny. -Keep your voice down.
-Fuck! I'ma- -Fuck you, get down here.
[suspenseful instrumental music]
What are you doing here, Dawn?
-[fist thuds] -[Danny grunts]
-What the fuck? Stop. -Any idea
what you just did.
-Stop. -Do you even get it?
-No, stop. -[Dawn grunts]
-Stop it. -[Dawn sighs]
-No! -Yeah.
-[Dawn shrieks] -Really, really?
-[fists thudding] -[Dawn grunts]
Stop! My parents are neighbors.
-[suspenseful music] -[Dawn panting]
My parents have neighbors.
-[suspenseful music] -I don't give a fuck!
You know my parents.
Are you gonna be cool? I'm gonna let go of you.
Yeah, I'm cool.
[suspenseful instrumental music]
-Okay. -[hand smacks]
Ah, fuck, shit!
-Fuck! -[footsteps scuffling]
[grunts] That was not cool.
Not cool, Dawn.
What the fuck?
[Dawn panting]
How did you even find me?
Because we drove past your parents' house
on the way down to Boaz, remember?
And plus, you're an idiot.
I traced your phone to like a block from here.
-[car engine whirring] -Fuck!
Lemme tell you something, Danny. Okay?
Nobody gives up on me, all right? Nobody.
-[birds chirping] -[grass rustling]
[Dawn panting]
-[Dawn exhales loudly] -Yeah, Dawn,
even if they catch you in bed with their boss?
[Dawn grunts]
I already told you, okay. He made me do that.
That's right, I remember seeing that gun
that was, [chuckles] that was on your head.
I remember that.
No, he didn't have a gun to my head,
but I was just a kid when I met Calvin, okay.
You don't understand. I had nothing.
So, what? What does that even matter?
So, you don't get what it's like to have nothing.
And then somebody comes along
and they give you a little something,
and then they give you a little something more.
And then before you know it,
they're reminding you how much you owe them.
[dramatic instrumental music]
It didn't mean anything.
I thought that we had something.
I thought we found something special.
We did.
We did.
Okay, but, [sighs]
when you want something,
finding it is not what's hard.
It's learning to take care of it.
We just, we gotta get better at taking care of us.
So, that whole thing was Calvin, that didn't-
That wasn't like revenge.
That wasn't payback for me and Joni?
That's her name?
I don't wanna hear about your stupid cunt slut.
Don't even say her name.
Okay? I don't wanna hear it.
Okay. I'm sorry. That was stupid.
-That was, -[Dawn sighs]
that was dumb.
I'm sorry.
This a nice place. Huh?
[sighs] Okay. Yeah.
Well, it's not the way I wanted you to see it
for the first time.
-[uplifting instrumental music] -[birds chirping]
Fuck, Dawn. We can't keep doing this.
[uplifting instrumental music]
I can't keep letting you treat me like this, all right?
I've never felt like this about anyone,
and I don't know how to process it, okay?
I'm doing my best here, but I'm not good at it.
-[uplifting instrumental music] -[birds chirping]
[footsteps scuffling]
What happened with Calvin
is never gonna happen again, okay?
I give you my word. All right?
I didn't give you my word before. I give it to you now.
Yeah. It's really convenient now.
Convenient?
I just drove 300 miles up here in my beater car.
What about that says convenient to you?
-Nothing really. -Okay.
-Thank you. -You're welcome.
[birds chirping]
I'm sorry, all right? I'm sorry.
Don't be mad, baby.
[uplifting instrumental music]
I'm sorry, too. Just... [sighs]
Miss me?
Yeah, I missed you.
-Yeah? -The fuck?
I don't even wanna be here.
-I missed you too. -[birds chirping]
[door lock clicks]
Hi. You wanna see me?
Yes, yes. Come in.
-[material shuffling] -[door handle clicks]
Have a seat.
Alrighty. Feels ominous.
[chuckles] No, don't worry.
Take a seat. I like your boots.
[chuckles]
[sighs] So, Brian?
-Yeah, mm. -You've been here,
what, 20 years?
Something like that?
[sniffs] Something like that, yeah.
SCU has been like a home,
like a real family to you.
Wouldn't you say?
Ah, I'd like it here.
It's not Ivy League,
but most of the students come here to learn.
It seems that way.
And there's a certain family atmosphere in here,
and I like that, yeah.
And that's great, Bri.
But as you know, this university, like so many others,
is facing a very challenging financial situation.
Declining enrollments, higher costs,
even an overly large faculty.
And you're looking to cut those costs, aren't you?
I'd be lying if I said otherwise.
[dramatic instrumental music]
To cut to the chase, we would like to offer you
a new opportunity, a generous financial package
that allows you to move into the next phase of your life.
I think what we're really getting at is early retirement.
Am I close there?
You could call it that, I guess.
Oh, I am calling it that. I'm not ready for that.
[dramatic instrumental music]
I think what you're trying to do is
you're trying to present me with a buyout package,
just so I can get the fuck out of here.
Ooh, oh, don't see any need for vulgarity.
Well, of course you don't because you're not the one
who's being asked to leave.
Janice.
Professor Fenton, let's be real.
Considering your issues in the classroom
and the downturn in your research productivity,
-Mm. -you might wanna look
at this opportunity as a good thing for you.
You get two years at half pay with no obligation
to the university, except to teach one class a semester,
but no research or service work, and then you're free.
Can't beat that.
You know, that's like half the pay that I would get
as a night manager at Jack in the Box.
So, why would I wanna do something like that?
I think you could do much better than that, don't you?
Not in this economy, Brian. And not at your age.
[somber instrumental music]
-Oh, you okay. -Well, gives us
something to think about, hmm.
-[material shuffling] -[footsteps scuffling]
[Brian] Yeah, it kind of does.
Of course, if you decide to turn us down,
life here could get considerably less comfortable.
-Oh. -I hope you understand that.
[footsteps thudding]
You can go fuck yourself.
-[upbeat instrumental music] -[door handle clicks]
[upbeat instrumental music]
-[door hand clicks] -[upbeat instrumental music]
-[birds chirping] -[upbeat instrumental music]
-[birds chirping] -[upbeat instrumental music]
-[birds chirping] -[upbeat instrumental music]
[wine pouring]
Jesus. [chuckles] Okay, you won.
-No. -Maybe.
-Oh. -Oh, shit.
[Brian] Hey. [laughs]
-Dad, -[Brian laughs]
Hi, Dad, did not know you were home, Pops.
-I'm home. -[Dawn chuckles]
This is John the love of my life.
-His room, hi. -Hi.
-Nice to meet you, Dad. -You can call me Brian.
-Okay. -Okay.
Um...
Nice we finally meet.
Mm-hmm, no, it's a pleasure, mm.
Sure, listen, let's get to the point.
-Okay? -Yeah.
Um, last time I heard from big shot over here,
he was running away from Boaz
and some people were chasing him,
and some money went missing,
and all of a sudden, here you are,
-and everything's copacetic. -[Dawn chuckles]
-[laughs] Yeah. -Yeah.
What's copacetic?
-It means all good. -Yeah.
-Well, Brian, -We're good.
I'm sure you can understand
just how complicated love can be.
Yeah, there's pains, Dad. Okay, they do...
Everybody goes through 'em, and we move through them,
and here we are.
-[Dawn chuckles] -[Danny laughs]
-Yeah we moved past it. -Mm-hmm.
I get it. I get it.
That's why I'm drinking.
[Dawn laughs]
Pops, you've been hitting the wine
a little hard lately, man.
What's,
what's,
-what's that all about? -Uh,
yeah, I'm stressed out, you know?
Ahem, it helps.
Is this stress maybe from the college
trying to kick you out?
Or you gotta, Dad, you gotta stand up
for what you believe in, man.
Listen, the only reason that you should ever
be leaving that college is that if you got
something right there in your heart,
telling you that you gotta go,
that you wanna do something else,
that you don't just leave because of them.
It's not always about the heart, Danny.
Sometimes it's about hope and money.
Oh, Dad, you have no hope now either? Okay.
Oh my God.
I know all about money, Pops, but hope.
All right. Hope is-
Go ahead, babe. What were you gonna say?
-I'm not sure. -Okay.
-You should take it. -I'll take it from here.
Hey, Brian, I know that you're probably looking at us
and you're thinking, well, where's the hope here?
[cork squeezes]
But I will say, you don't see us walking away.
No.
Exactly. Thank you.
Thank you. Dawn, God, I love you.
See, I wanted to punch her in the face last week now-
-Danny? -I'm just saying like,
I've, I don't even know why,
but I've had like a change of mindset.
Dad, I look at her and I see a lot of me. Okay?
She's got, you got fight. We have fight.
And without fight. What's the fucking point, Dad?
That's what you need to do.
You need to pull your bootstraps up, Dad. Okay?
'Cause I can tell you who would not
put up with this, this shit.
Grandpa, that's who.
You know it, Dad.
-Okay. -No, no,
-no, no, no, no, no. -What are you doing?
-What? -[Dawn grunts]
There may be something I didn't tell you.
-[upbeat instrumental music] -[footsteps thudding]
-Pop, hold that thought. -Shit, shit, shit.
Dawn, Dawn, goddammit. Goddammit Dawn.
-[sliding door screeching] -Fucker, Calvin,
what are you doing here?
I came here to get you.
I told you not to come here.
I thought you were in fucking danger.
Oh, danger, really, Calvin?
-[upbeat instrumental music] -[footsteps scuffling]
[metal scraping]
I came here for two things.
My fucking money and you, Dawn.
Well, I got your fucking money.
Hey, you ain't getting
-neither one of those things, -Oh.
-So get the- -Oh, okay.
Get back in
-your fucking car. -Okay, little bitch boy
-and his knife, huh. -Get your little ass
back to Boaz.
-Trying to go back to Boaz, -Will you fight,
-where you came from. -like a real fucking man
-and put that away. -You and Dawn are done.
-We're done? -Okay? Yeah.
We're not done.
Put your little bitch knife away
and fight me like a real man.
Danny, Danny, it's so messy, baby.
-Huh, that's right. -It's not worth it.
-It's, no? -It's not, it's not worth it.
-It's not. No. -It's not.
-Dawn, you coming with me. -Oh!
-Whoa! -You better back it up.
Is this what's going on?
You crawling back to this little fucking
-bitch ass mother fucker. -I don't like figures-
-We're working things out. -[Danny grunts]
-Babe, stop! -Okay?
-Working it out. -Yeah, we're working it out.
Working it out. We're fucking working it out now?
-Yeah. -I'm tired of it.
-Okay. -[fist thuds]
[Calvin moans]
-Woo-hoo, oh... -Calvin, I said
go back to Boaz, where you, whoop.
-Mother... -Okay, all right.
-Come on. Come on big boy. -Okay, mother fucker.
-What you got? -Come on.
This is what I do.
-Can you shut up. -Shut your...
[fist thuds]
Mother fucker!
-What you got? -I'm gonna fuck you up, dude.
-Are you? Come on. -Get him, babe.
-Let's do this, babe. -I'm gonna fuck you up.
-You know I'm good, -Yeah!
-At two things, baby, -Yeah, get him!
-Three things. -Come here.
-[Calvin grunts] -[Dawn shrieks]
[water splashing]
Whoa!
-Fucker! -How's it feel, Cal?
Hey, hey, hey, Danny.
Stop, stop, stop, stop.
-Get outta my pool. -He might be strong,
-but I got it. -Get outta
-my yard. -Pop, it's okay.
There's no fighting around here, goddammit.
-[water splashing] -[upbeat instrumental music]
-Yeah. -You got it, baby.
-You got it. -Get out!
-Look like a wet dog. -[water splashing]
Get outta here. Come on, get out.
-Get the fuck out. -[upbeat instrumental music]
[footsteps thudding]
This ain't over asshole.
-Oh my God. -Yes, it is.
-Take a big long walk, -Come on.
-Back to Boaz. -Go, go.
You're a fucking hussy.
-No more fighting. -You're not fucking
-worth it. -You're not
-fucking worth this. -You're a fucking hussy.
-Get out! -Get out!
-You're a fucking hussy. -I'm not gonna tell you
-again buddy, get out. -Fuck you, Cal.
You're not even worth it.
Get the fuck out.
-You sucked in bed. -That's enough.
-Come on. -Okay.
-[water splashing] -[upbeat instrumental music]
-Yeah. -[heels clacking]
Oh, hey.
-God! -Mm.
[heels clacking]
This must be Dawn.
-Sure is. -Mm-hmm.
-Nice to meet you. -Mm.
I bet you weren't counting on all these visitors, huh?
I wouldn't call y'all visitors.
[crickets chirping]
[material shuffling]
Well, Danny and I are gonna be heading back
to Boaz pretty soon, right, baby?
-Yeah. -Oh.
-[Brian grunts] -[wind swooshing]
Uh, Corrine, how's the love triangle?
Uh, you mean my court case?
-Yeah. -Well, to be honest,
the prosecutor pretty much beat us up.
Kind of picked apart our new key suspect.
You know the card-playing alibi guy.
Yeah, well, apparently he's worth over a million dollars.
So, why would he even care about a mere 33 grand,
the wife's life insurance money?
That's exactly why.
-Hmm? -He's loaded.
He's loaded. Rich people don't care about money.
He probably got into it with his buddy Jack for fun.
His buddy took it too far and he got in over his head.
Think like a criminal, Corinne.
It works. Trust me.
-[Brian chuckles] -[Corrine chuckles]
I didn't think about that.
Thank you, Danny.
You're so smart. You should be a lawyer, babe.
-Yeah, fucking know it. -Don't you think, Brian?
You know, I'd look good in a three-piece suit, Pops.
Oh my God. You'd be so hot in a three-piece suit.
It would be really hot, actually.
[Dawn laughs]
Like really hot.
Would you hold me in contempt?
-[cellphone buzzing] -Order in the court?
[Dawn] [laughs] So, hot.
[cellphone buzzing]
You could come home and tell me all about your court cases
and how hard your day's been.
-Oh my God, yes. -With your briefcase.
[Danny] I will definitely have the nicest briefcase ever.
[Dawn] Yeah, we'll get you
-a real nice briefcase. -Can I get a custom one?
[Dawn] Of course, it'll have your initials on it
-and mine too. -I could totally be
-a lawyer. -Yes.
-You might be on to- -Shut up!
[dramatic instrumental music]
[material shuffling]
-[finger scraping] -[dramatic instrumental music]
-[dramatic instrumental music] -[material shuffling]
-[footsteps thudding] -[dramatic instrumental music]
-[material shuffling] -[dramatic instrumental music]
[footsteps thudding]
Hey, Claire. Sorry I missed your call.
No, everything's okay.
I just wanted to call you and tell you that your dad,
he did fall again last night
and he hit his head kinda hard.
He's okay, I mean, he's conscious,
and he, [sighs] he says he's fine,
but then he always says he's fine.
But, you know, uh, all day he seems a little disoriented.
And he's been having a little trouble
getting outta bed this morning.
And, [sighs] well,
for the first time, he...
For the first time, what?
Well, I,
I don't think he,
I'm not sure if he recognized me.
I'm so sorry, Claire. What can I do to help him?
So, I was just, you know, I was just,
I just don't know how much longer I can do it.
And I was just wondering if,
you know, if you boys could help.
Hey, look Claire.
I'm gonna come down there. All right.
I'm gonna come straight down there and we'll all be together
and we'll try to make a plan.
We'll take one thing at a time,
and see how it goes.
Oh, thank you Brian.
You know, you always know to do the right thing.
I'm gonna fly in tomorrow,
and please tell my dad I said I love him.
[material shuffling]
-I will. -[footsteps thudding]
[upbeat instrumental music]
[upbeat instrumental music continues]
-[airplane engines whirring] -[upbeat instrumental music]
[upbeat instrumental music continues]
[airplane engines whirring]
[upbeat instrumental music]
Looks like real estate's doing pretty good for you, Jeff.
Thanks, honey. Yeah, life is good.
I want you to know, I'll put your dad and Claire
on all our prayer list.
That gives me a lot of comfort. Thank you.
Lord, Pops. Just can't say enough about you.
He's sure proud of you.
Hey, you work hard you make money.
Well, I guess I missed that life lesson.
You know, I'm just saying.
Mm, can you say whether or not
you come to visit tomorrow?
Well, I'll try, but I got a few showings
I can't really get out of, so.
Really, well, you can't get someone else
to go show a few houses,
and find enough time to go see Pops?
Look Bri, I've been a local go-to son around here
for years now,
last thing I need is a lecture on sacrifice
and spend time with Dad.
Gonna loan you one of our cars,
and you can go on over there.
And when my schedule loosens up,
I'll be there.
[speaker indistinct]
Okay, handsome.
-Yeah. -Make up your mind.
All right?
-[footsteps thudding] -[people chattering]
-[dog barks] -[object rattling]
-Get them off! -Stop!
-Get 'em off! -Robert, your clothes,
-off! -Get off me.
-No, wait, no wait. -[material shuffling]
-Wait, no! -Get! Get away!
-Take them off. -No, I don't care.
-Take them off. -You wanna hit me,
-hit me. -Take them off of me.
[Robert grunts]
-Oh, Robert. -Dad.
Dad, what is going on?
-See Brian, -Put your clothes on.
-He's just backwards. -I'm going to put
-the clothes on. -[dramatic instrumental music]
-Dad, Daddy. -This is just your son.
-He's come to visit. -We can go and see the boat.
-Here, put this on. -Put your clothes on, Pop.
[sighs] Pop, what are you doing?
-Mm? -[material shuffling]
I'm not, what are you doing, Dad?
Dad, what are you doing? [cries]
[somber instrumental music]
-Come on. -Oh my God, Dad.
What are you doing? [cries]
Oh my God, Pops.
-Let's see. -[Brian grunts]
Oh, here's your chocolate.
Your mother spoiled you.
-Open the box. -Nah.
She did everything for you.
Maybe that's why you're so goddam lazy.
-Huh? -He doesn't-
He doesn't know what he's saying.
-Doesn't mean it. -Jeff's not lazy.
-You're right. -Look what he brought you.

like a whole new dimension of the man.
[sighs] I bet you'd love to talk to him now.
Claire calls him "Mr. Wonderful."
Why do you suppose he kept
all this better man stuff away from all of us?
Mm.
It's like all these love letters and this big heart
he kept secret from mom.
Why did Marjorie even leave him?
Well, you know, mom fell in love with him
when he had that Navy uniform on.
And then, you know, they came back here
and everything was supposed to be happily ever after.
It's just young love and it didn't last.
What about us? What if you forget who I am?
I doubt it, honey.
I can barely make it through a day without you.
-[Corrine chuckles] -[Brian chuckles]
Mm. [lips smacking]
[somber instrumental music]
[material shuffling]
All right. How's that?
You look great.
Like a son who's about to honor his father.
Okay.
[Brian moans]
[Corrine] You got this.
[hand taps]
[birds chirping]
[Pastor] Claire. God bless.
-Thank you. -[birds chirping]
Brian, is there anything in particular
you'd like me to say about your father today?
Um, I can handle that.
-Very well. -[birds chirping]
Good to see you.
[birds chirping]
My condolences.
[birds chirping]
[footsteps thudding]
[birds chirping]
[birds chirping continues]
Good afternoon.
We're gathering here to grieve the passing
of a good man, Dr. Robert Fenton.
And to witness to our faith,
but yet celebrate his life.
I can't help but chuckle as I reflect
upon my own relationship with Doc,
that he had a nagging doubt about ministers
of God such as myself.
[chuckles] That being said,
with all fairness, he held himself
to the same exacting standards as he did someone like me.
[birds chirping]
I can recall fondly
a conversation with him after a particular service
where old Doc came up to me and said,
"Pastor, you speak of the afterlife
as if you've given up on this life we live here today."
[birds chirping]
And I've gotta tell you, friend, it doesn't give inspiration
or competence to those of us trying
to make good in this messed up world that we live in.
And for those of you who knew him,
you know he didn't use the word "messed up."
[Claire chuckles]
Doc was a husband,
father, friend.
And we can take comfort that his suffering has ended.
[birds chirping]
But let's also celebrate,
enjoy the fact that he is making
swift passage to paradise.
I'd like to open it up now to anyone who may have some words
of honor to offer this wonderful man.
[birds chirping]
I think I will. [sighs]
Please, Brian.
-[birds chirping] -[footsteps scuffling]
-[birds chirping] -[somber instrumental music]
-[paper shuffles] -[somber instrumental music]
[hands thudding]
Well, I look out at all of you
and I see so many people that he treated,
and healed and even delivered as babies, and,
[object taps]
And yes, there were patients that he lost, and,
now he's lost to us and we're all sad,
-and, -[birds chirping]
our ministers tell us that in death
we fall into God's hands, which provides release
from all anger and sorrow.
My father hoped this world would be true,
but faith has a hard sell to this man of science.
[somber instrumental music]
And as I stand over his body today, it is hard for me.
[somber instrumental music]
It is hard for Jeff,
[somber instrumental music]
And most of all for my father's beloved wife, Claire.
[somber instrumental music]
But now we must somehow turn his
powerful living presence into a memory.
But who's ever really ready for that?
I'm a historian.
I ideal and memories, making judgements about the dead.
But I'm not ready to judge the history of Robert Fenton.
And I wonder if ever really truly knew him at all.
[somber instrumental music]
He did keep big parts of himself inside.
But I did learn a big lesson from that.
And I have to say, so if I didn't,
why my father kept him,
such things [sighs]
to himself and wait for me, I'll never know.
But in so doing, I've learned not to turn my back on people
that have loved me and care for me.
[somber instrumental music]
-[Brian grunts] -[birds chirping]
My father did not die.
He escaped.
-[somber instrumental music] -[birds chirping]

[somber instrumental music]
Okay. Yeah, I don't know guys.
You guys all know me.
I love this man.
Even though I didn't get to spend a lot of time
with him at the end, I regret that.
Uh, but you guys stand up here and you talk about,
you know, the afterlife and the paradise,
and what the fuck. [chuckles]
You don't know where they go. You don't know where you go.
Nobody knows this.
Do you know? No.
You don't know where it goes.
Nobody knows. Okay.
It's a spiritual journey, right, Rev?
[somber instrumental music]
[sighs] I just, I'd wanna know,
did you guys ever think about,
while you're sitting here singing "Kumbaya"
about how good your God is,
and you know where Grandpa's going.
Yeah.
What kind of God
would take a wonderful man?
Somebody who saved lives,
took care of people his whole life?
What kind of God would take a man like that
and peel him away?
-[somber instrumental music] -[birds chirping]
[sniffs] Peel him away.
He can't even take care of himself.
He shit his pants.
-Ahem. -Tell me that.
Can anybody answer that question?

Son, son, this is very disrespectful.
-I've- -Who is it disrespectful?
-The disrespectful from you. -Hey,
-Disrespect. -No, no, no, no.
-That's disrespect, Reverend. -Stay outta it.
Okay, that is enough, Danny.
It's time for you to be done talking
and come stand over here.
Oh, 'cause I believe something other,
I'm not allowed to talk 'cause I'm Danny, Uncle Jeff.
Is that right? Is that what's going down?
-It's going down Danny, -Okay.
Because that's what we all believe.
[Danny] Okay, so, I have to keep my mouth shut.
-That's right? -Is that-
That's right Danny. That's what's right.
'Cause we're doing all,
you're ruining everything
-right in front of the Lord. -Why is it so wrong
-that I'm gonna speak my mind? -The problem is
your mind is full of atheist crap.
-All right, Jeff. -So shut the fuck down.
-Look, Jeff! -Can we get back
-to the service please. -It doesn't
look like it's sweetheart.
-Look- -Hey!
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
-He is not the problem. -Try that, Jeff.
It's your son that is outta place here.
-You're the problem, -What's so wrong,
-as I see it. -that I can speak my mind.
-I'm the problem? -Yeah. Huh?
He's making a disgrace outta Daddy's funeral.
-You paying attention? -You making a mockery
-outta yourself. -Sorry. Sorry, Uncle Jeff.
-Sorry that I did- -I see what this is.
This is what you taught him, right?
-Yeah. -What is this?
Something like father,
-like son. -Okay, so, just because-
You're a fucking embarrassment
You're a mother fucker about that.
