If we get something out of that bee's nest,
That would be really awesome
ooh.
Bees are getting a little agitated.
They definitely don't like it when I do that.
Ah!
Usually when they start getting me on the balls, that's the cue.
Just back off a little bit.
Oh, my gosh!
Oh, my god. I can't do this.
The location is kinda like the place where I grew up
In the philippines. It feels so familiar.
But being naked and trying to survive in the wild
For 21 days, that's going to be really hard.
I was coming to colombia,
And I studied a whole lot of plants and animals
That you would find in the colombian amazon.
And instead I'm up here in this high-altitude hills environment.
Millions of years ago,
This grassy savannah of central colombia was deep under water,
Where volcanic lava flows, and ages of erosion
Created of labyrinth of rock formations and tunnels.
Now, with the ocean long gon and high triple digit temperatures,
These caves provide a welcome respite from the intense heat.
But they're home to disease carrying bats,
Bees, and large cats, such as puma and jaguar.
Jaguars can run 50 miles per hour,
And can eat you alive.
Hope I don't encounter them at all.
I'm excited.
Meeting my partner is just right around the corner.
Hope she's chill.
All right, colombia, let's do this.
Sorry about this, mom.
I feel good about being nake
It's not a part of this challenge that bothers me at all.
As a kid, my dream was to run naked
Through the jungle with a bow and arrow,
So here I am, world!
Gracias, amigo.
All right. This is it.
I don't really have any problem being nude.
I'm pretty game for whatever
This challenge is gonna brin to me whatever hardship.
I'm ready for it.
All right. Let's do this.
Just out in the wilderness, walking naked.
These rocks look interesting.
They're really huge.
I hope my partner is not laz
I can get pretty annoyed.
It's like a cave.
Oh, man. Check out this area.
That is intense.
I'm most nervous about working well with my partne
And finding enough food to keep ourselves satisfied
I've already found a few nuts.
Can't believe it, man.
I already got a little food. I think this is gonna be awesome.
Hello!
- How's it going? - Good. How are you?
- Rizza. - Yeah. Andrew. Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you finally. - Yeah. Yeah. You nervous?
I'm pretty nervous.
- Where are you from? - I'm from alabama.
- Alabama! - Yeah, yeah. How 'bout you?
- Originally from the philippines, but... - Oh, sweet.
Seattle, washington right now.
- Nice. So, cool. Um... - finally.
- Got us some food already. - Oh!
- Nice! You're ready. - Yeah. So...
- Kind of embarrassing, though, we wore the same outfit. - I know.
Nothing.
We're gonna make it to 21, right?
- We'll make it. - All right.
Cool.
Are you ready to, like, go?
Yeah. Would you wanna go check out our...
- Our gear? Let's do it. - Yeah. Let's go.
To aid their survival in the colombian grasslands
Rizza has brought her machete.
- Dude, that thing is badass looking. - Yes.
Andrew has brough his fire starter.
- Love it. - This is good.
- I think it's gonna be cold out here. - Yeah.
And to avoid dehydration
Due to the intense triple digit heat,
They've been given a pot.
Boiling water. Carrying stuff, this is great.
And it looks like I also have the map.
Great. Let's check it out.
Let's see. It looks like there's a bunch of danger
Marked all over here.
I don't want to see those.
Well, if you see them, that means you're safe. it's like...
Exactly.
- When you don't see 'em, that's when they get you. - That's true.
Here's a place that's got water.
Looks like it's got some food... - food.
- And maybe a cave. - Cave that we can use as shelter?
- That sounds great, you know? - Yeah.
If we don't have to build shelter tonight.
- Perfect. That's energy saved. - Awesome.
So, should we get a move on?
Yeah. Let's go to the caves.
All right. Let's do it.
Dude, I can't belie these rock formations.
Seriously. How in the hell?
- Dude, I love your hair, by the way. - Oh, thank you.
It's got a very...
- it's really thick. - Pacific island-southeast-asian vibe.
Exactly.
In the philippines, my parents are pretty strict
The kind of culture I grew up with,
They would think, "you're a woman,
You should just be staying at home, get a husband,
Cook for them," and that's it.
But that's not really me.
I would go out and about, explore in the wilderness,
Catching snakes without any... like, fear.
I moved to the u.S. At the age of 19.
It was hard.
But nobody tells me what to do, and no regrets.
How are your feet holding up?
They're tough. Yeah.
I do a lot of hiking, so...
do you ever do any, like, rock-climbing or anything like that?
I do. I do rock-climbing
On top of the mountaineering I do.
I got into mountaineering seven years ago.
Hiking 5000 to, like, 14,000-ish.
Which is mount rainier, biggest mountain in washington state.
My goal is to do everest someday.
This looks like a pretty good walking stick.
Awesome.
Rizza has shown extreme mental toughness as a mountaineer.
However, she doesn't have mu hunting experience.
She begins with a psr,
Or primitive survival rating of 5.8.
Tell me about your survival skills.
I'm an anthropologi by trade.
- No way! Oh, that's awesome! - So... Yeah. Yeah.
So I actually work with hunter-gatherer tribes and stuff, so...
this is super cool - yeah. Yeah. A perfect opportunity.
- Wow. - So...
Listo para la batalla.
Yes.
I would describe myself as part woodsman and part nerd.
Growing up in alabama, I was fascinated
By all these indigenous cultures that ran naked through the forests
With bows and arrows, and survived off the land.
And I was like, "hey, I can actually study this.
I can go work with these tribes and learn how they live."
I've spent almost a year altogether living with the ache tribe.
They're the ones who really taught me how to live in nature.
I study hunting, how to follow animal tracks
How to find burrows, how to dig things out of the ground.
And so this gonna be my chan to prove that I can take
What I've learned from them and apply it in an actual survival environment
When they're not here to help me.
There's, uh, some edible berries right here.
I think that these are called tanino. Or nigua.
I bet, like, everything you see here is like,
"yeah, I know that. Yeah, I know what that is for."
yep.
Andrew has studied extensively with indigenous tribes.
But he has yet to put his skill to the test
In a real survival situation
He begins with a psr of 6.8
one of my biggest concerns coming out here was,
"who am I gonna be paired with"? Like... - yeah.
Are you concerned that, like,
- I don't know anything? - No, actually.
Rizza, she's definitely tough.
Mountaineering, climbing some of these huge mountain in washington.
So it sounds like she's already got mental fortitude
And that ability to kinda grit and push on through it.
Rizza's awesome.
Couldn't have asked for anybody better to be put out here with.
Oh, gosh. You're too kind.
Do you have a significant other back home?
I am, yeah, dating right now.
- Oh, yeah? - Yeah.
Nice.
Andrew is really, really smart.
He's already pointing out a lot of things that looks edible.
But there's no attraction there at all.
Dude, this tropical sun is...
- Nice and warm. Dude... - yeah, it's getting pretty hot.
It's so warm, and I can't wait to get to our camp.
Check out those cliff faces over there.
Wow.
That would be an awesome spot for, like, a puma
- To just be up watching us. - Oh, gosh.
Whoa. Look at this.
Oh, man.
Holy.
There's a bat right there.
No, no, no, no, no.
I would not be happy if we got rabies out here.
Okay.
Are you worried at all about, uh...
- hmm? - About spending the night out here?
Kinda, but we need to get ourselves some shelter.
- Before it gets dark. - Yeah.
That area over there looks great.
- Let's try to check this place out. - Okay.
- So this area looks awesome. - It's amazing.
I t's underneath this giant stone arch
That's probably 20 or 30 feet wide.
Having a dry roof over our heads
Right from the start would be awesome.
There is, you know, a rock to reflect the heat.
Um, it looks like it's dry.
It's got more light. So, in the morning
- You don't really feel creeped out tonight. - Yeah. Absolutely.
Yeah.
- Good thoughts. More light. - All right.
- Good teamwork. - Okay.
So our next mission is to get water.
I mean, there's a tiny bout of flow here.
Just follow the stream.
We actually have a natural spring,
So the water in this area is filtering through the roc
And it's coming out of the cliff face.
Seems to follow this channel.
Yep, there's a pool down here.
Water like that should be safe to drink.
Perfect.
All right, let's start a fire next.
- You got it? - Yeah. This is easy.
Okay.
Dude, you can tell it's already starting to get darker
In here in these caves.
Oh! Bunch of insects.
Oh, gosh.
Oh, my gosh.
There are bees in there, just so... - yeah, there's, like,
- A whole hive right there. - Yeah. Just don't go close to it.
There you go.
Uh...
all right.
- Gotta get our kindling on there. - Thank you. We have fire!
- Absolutely. Yeah, man. - Yes!
I think that, uh, we're killing it.
- We're doing awesome. - We're doing a great job. Yes!
Just saw a bat flew.
It didn't have anything funky about it?
It feels so nice to get some water
After that, like, all that sweating out there in the heat.
Oh, my god. That water tastes so good.
Holy.
It's... What is that?
There's some sort of animal over there making noise.
We, uh... We heard a sound out here.
A rustling in the bushes.
It sounds like some type of cat.
Oh.
Just be careful.
I'm just out here investigating a little bit.
Which is kinda crazy 'cause it's pitch black.
You good?
You okay?
I'm good. I just stepped on one of those logs there.
Yeah. Windy.
And a little chilly.
I did not get much sleep last night, to be honest.
But today I really want to build a shelter.
I kind of that we just need a wind break.
We can make shelter that doesn't require a lot of effort.
Well, the thing is, we have to also think
If it's gonna rain the next few days.
We can't just think about when...
You don't think that the rock shelter is gonna keep us dry?
Well, if it's windy like that...
- good point. - Right?
Yeah.
Um, we need to think of the worst,
Not, like, the bare minimum.
Okay. I agree with that.
Let's go get some building materials.
Just to be safe.
I have this mentalit because of mountaineering.
Even though we're in a really nice cave,
You always, always gotta prepare for the worst
All the time, and not just think, like, "okay, now we're comfortable
And then the next day we get hypothermia.
Timber!
We're going to buil a lean-to.
So our idea is a regular lean-to
Running across this rock, with the ends up on the rock face
And the other ends down in the dirt.
And then we wanna close off this upper edge
Just to help keep the wind out.
Cool.
It looks great.
Good job! Well done!
- I love this. - Yeah.
Finally a shelter!
Now we just really need to scout
So we can find some food source around the area.
Ow. Ow! Ugh.
- Bees. - Did you just get stung?
Yeah, I got stung. I have hair,
And they're like... They love my hair so much.
Oh, I see the nest! Look up on the, uh, cliff face.
- Ugh. - Straight up above you.
These ones are black. They're not the same species as the ones by our camp.
Oh, my gosh!
What?
I think there's some type of weaver bird nest over here.
I have no idea if it's gonna have eggs or not.
Anything in it?
This is... There's a baby bird in here.
Is it alive?
Yeah.
Oh, baby bird.
That's nuts, man.
Oh, my god!
- Sorry, little guy. Oh, yeah. - Aw.
- Sorry, little guy. - Look at that!
Hi, little dude.
It's just day two.
Do I want to eat this bird?
I feel so bad.
Part of me wishes we could, like, hang him back up in his tree, but...
I don't think his mom would take him back at this point.
Oh, there you go.
I don't think I can eat this bird.
I'm gonna give this guy some water.
You wanna try to see how long we can keep him alive?
We can catch and mash up some grasshoppers.
Yay!
Yay! Oh, you want more?
Oh! He's gonna go 21 days with us too.
It definitely would not be my first instinct
To try to keep this bird alive.
But, on the other hand,
I really don't want to be out here bickering and arguing.
I would rather be on the same page with my partner.
That bird will fly on our 21 days.
- That would be a, uh... - Why not?
A first time.
Today's been a good day.
We have shelter, we have firewood.
We found some food, and it became a friend.
Yeah.
We found a friend.
So, now there's three of us.
Like a little family out here.
Us and our baby... Bird.
He's crying.
He's probably hungry.
But we don't know what to feed him.
We really got to find him some food.
There's a pretty nice little puddle over here.
It's got some minnows in it.
Ooh.
Maybe we'll get minnows and then cut it
Into tiny pieces for him.
I think that whatever we feed him, we've got to chew it up for him.
Hmm.
Mmm. Hey!
Ah! Good job!
Feeding a baby bird off of my fingers and, like, from my own mouth,
Was definitely a unique experience.
It's not something I've ever done before,
And it felt kinda sweet, you know?
It's so cute, man.
It's really cute.
Okay.
It wants more.
There's a grasshopper.
- Yeah. - Oh!
I'm gonna feed him to the bird.
I think that the ache would think
That us keeping this baby bird is silly.
If they kill a mom and there's a baby there,
They'll adopt that baby and they'll kinda keep it as a pet.
But when times get hard, and they get hungry...
They may eat a pet.
Pound for pound, this bird's eating better than we are.
This partnership is really going well
On this adventure.
So this bird is probably bringing us luck right now.
- Oh, I wonder how the birdie is. - Mmm.
It's probably still sleeping.
Did you feed him?
No.
- He's not trying to eat? - Nope, he's not trying to eat.
Um, andrew?
Yeah?
Is it still sleeping, or it's awake?
Did you feed him?
- No. - He's not trying to eat?
Nope, he's not trying to eat.
Um, andrew?
Yeah?
It's... It's dead.
Poor little guy.
We tried.
I think it was a bit of a lost cause from the start, but I'm sad.
I was hoping that we'd be able to pull it off
Treader passed.
Even though it's just two days with this bird...
It's pretty heartbreaking to see the bird die in my hand.
We tried our best to feed him.
I don't think we were able to feed him enough or good enough food.
Poor little guy.
He was pretty strong. He held out for two days.
It's a survival situation,
And I need to separate my emotional feeling towards the bird.
It would be a total waste to have taken his nest down and caught him,
And not to eat him.
So... We need protein, we need calories.
And that's what he's gonna provide for us.
Mmm. Look at that meat inside.
Mmm-hmm.
I'm sad that it died,
But this is the first day that we've really had
Any substantial amount of food.
I don't know what to say. This is really good.
The bird's pretty tasty.
Mmm.
I wish it's, like, much bigg than what it is.
Wow.
- Oh, that's perfect. - Mmm.
- This so good. - Good.
Even though we ate the baby bird,
I woke up feeling much hungrier.
Ugh, I want some more food.
You see the...
The tree line down there? Down at the bottom of the valley?
- Oh. - There's almost certainly gonna be a creek down there.
We know from looking at the map
That there's a river out here somewhere.
Riparian zones along the edges of rivers tend to have a lot more fruit,
A lot more animals, things like that.
I'd be good if we just went ahead and went right now
While we have the energy from this food.
In a survival situation,
It's absolutely critical to weigh the costs and the benefits.
We could get down there and we could find nothing, and that would really stink
But you don't survive out here long term
By laying around and not eating.
You know, you've got to get out there,
You got to be proactive, you've got to find the resources.
I see him.
- Oh, right there, right there. - Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
He went around this tree.
I lost him.
Yeah, should've just banged it with my stick when I saw it.
Well, you're welcome to attempt.
Oh, well, good try.
Yeah, they're... They're fast.
You hear that water?
I see it.
I see it, man.
Oh, my gosh. Look at this creek!
We made it.
Dude!
Oh, my god.
Look at all these minnows.
I just wish that it was not this far.
- Yeah. - And I hope we find something that's...
- makes it worth it? - Makes it worth it.
- Oh, man! - That's awesome.
Whoo-hoo!
Look at how beautiful this is.
Yes!
Look at those fishes!
Holy. They're huge.
I think we need to make a basket to grab them.
Yeah, I wanna get into this water.
A lot of smaller fish will come nibble your skin.
If you just hold still for long enough,
They'll get really comfortab and they'll start swimming between your hands.
And when they do that, it's possible to grab them.
They're literally right here.
It's pretty frustrating
That we're not gonna get anything,
And we're gonna be back in our camp without any food
Hey, let's go this way, and we can actually keep going farther.
I think a lot of my mentality, and survival,
Has to do with my experience working with hunger-gatherer
You have to put in the work constantly to find the food
They work really, really har
I still haven't seen any fruits.
No, me neither.
Ooh. Oh, my god. Is that a gecko right there?
He's in this clump of grass right here.
He's gone. He's way over there.
Still no luck.
I think we just need to, like, head back.
We need to rest. It's been a long day.
I wanna search just a little bit more.
There's an australian aboriginal tribe called the mardu,
And the way they would do this is they would just light this whole area on fire.
And then, afterwards, they would walk through it and find all the dead lizards.
Dead lizards?
I understand andrew's admiration
With the tribes he worked with.
He said they're, like, working non-stop, blah, blah, blah.
But it's just me and him.
I'm just worried that he would overdo himself and he'll pass out.
Let's head out.
We haven't eaten anything yet, remember?
And there's still, like, a long hike going back.
It's so disappointing for me.
All the work we did to get here is calories burned.
And we're still burning more.
I know, but if we burn more and find more resources, we'd gain.
Our goal right now is to find food, so...
what is that?
Oh, stop! There's a snake.
Pull out the machete. Quick, quick.
- Yes, yes. - Quick, just give it to me.
Ooh!
It went down to the water.
All right. Yes!
- Come, bring another stick. - Hold on.
You know, I'm wondering, like "is this thing venomous?"
This very well could be a poisonous species that I'm not aware of.
Don't get too close to here, 'cause it'll strike.
Oh, he's out. He's out.
- Oh! - Oh, my god.
Don't get too close to here, 'cause it'll strike.
Looks like a fish.
You know, I'm wondering, like "is this thing venomous?"
This very well could be a poisonous species that I'm not aware of.
- Oh, he's out. He's out. - Oh!
Oh...
you need to hurry, please.
Go past me.
Cut a branch.
You always have to be cautio when you're around an agitated animal.
Especially one that can hurt you.
Oh, my god.
I'm gonna get control of his head.
When I do, cut him with, like, a sawing motion.
Just a second.
Here.
Go a little lower. He's... He's trying to get out.
Go a little lower. Yeah, there.
Let me get him in position.
Yeah. Sawing motion.
There you go.
Beautiful.
Great job!
- Oh, my god. That was so... - Hell yeah!
Kinda stressful.
Whoo-hoo!
I couldn't be happier with my teammate. She did a great job.
So I'm very excited to be working with her.
Totally worth it to go down here.
Absolutely.
Such a great haul.
You never know, with a scout like that, is it gonna be worth it?
Are you gonna burn more calories than you gain
But this one was 100% worth it.
- Yay! - Feels like we're back home.
Great job teaming up.
It was pretty fast at first but andrew caught it.
Yeah, I wasn't about to let that thing get away.
I'll trust your cooking skills on this one.
The snake tasted like...
Barbecue chicken.
Just a nibble. Don't eat too much.
Squirrel.
I know you're excited.
I was trying to nibble it, and then I hit the meat.
Even though there's not a lot of meat in it,
Like, it's... It tastes so fricking good.
Mmm.
So satisfying.
So, tomorrow is day seven.
I wanna take a... Day off.
And it's probably best if we don't do it at the exact same time,
-'cause... Like a day off from going out... -do what you need to do.
And collecting firewood, and making nets,
And foraging and all that sort of stuff.
But just tomorrow, during the daytime, I don't want to do that stuff.
Oh, yeah, don't do it.
Cool.
You know, I'm a spiritual person,
And I really like to observe the sabbath.
And so, every seventh day I'm gonna have a day of rest while I'm out here.
When the sun sets, if I can rest through to tomorrow
And then rest through...
And when the sun sets tomorrow, I'll pick up working again.
Okay.
- You hear that? - Mmm-hmm.
I'm gonna grab firewood before it rains.
Okay.
Just grabbing all the wood here.
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Andrew wanted to just take a zero day.
Like, literally doing nothin
And I'm totally down for tha
He's been really working a lot these past few days, so it's much needed.
You good there, andrew?
Mmm-hmm.
Attagirl. Good job.
Thanks.
Oh, gosh.
So the rain just started.
This is probably the hardest rain we've had since we've been here.
Whew.
It's cold.
We don't want water to start flowing down on our stuff.
I may have to bust out some canals, just in case.
I was not planning to do any work today,
But, uh, it says in the bible
That the sabbath is made for man, man isn't made for the sabbath.
And so, you can do work on the sabbath when it's necessary.
I'm worried that water's gonna run down the hill into our shelter,
So I'm just making some cana to divert the water away, in case it does.
Are we good?
Yeah.
We would be hurting right now if we did not have this rock shelter.
It's early in the morning. I just got up.
I'm gonna go
Check and see if there's any sign of that armadillo.
Really hoping I can get us some food today.
I'm sick and tired of not having any big meat.
I want something.
Hey, rizza?
What?
We've got the main hole right down there.
We have a possible second hole.
I think it's unlikely back there.
So why don't we go ahead and plug one of them completely?
- And we'll both be in this area? - Yeah.
We could try to trap 'em, which I'm not sure is really gonna work.
The ache would not use deadfalls.
They do all of their hunting actively.
So...
Let's try to smoke out an armadillo.
Okay.
Some meat would be amazing.
We have meat hunger.
That's what the tribes call it, meat hunger.
If we catch this armadillo,
That means a feast tonight, and then we're gonna have more energy
For the next few days.
We're not trying to spear this thing.
It's hard to spear an armadillo.
Our goal is to literally tackle the thing, jump on top of it,
Pin it down, and then break its neck.
So it looks like either smoking them out doesn't work...
Or it's not home.
Or we're not doing it right.
We didn't even hear it squirming inside the hole, or anything like that,
So I would say this is a total failure.
Did you see this before?
See what?
There's another hole in here.
Oh, yeah?
I wanna try to hear the echo through the ground
To see if I can track this tunnel more efficiently.
This is a technique that I've learned from the ache.
What I'm gonna get you to do is take this stick...
And you're gonna just...
Thump it, all the way down to the bottom of this hole.
The idea is that if the armadillo is in the entrance,
She'll poke him.
And if he's farther back, you might hear him moving around in the burrow
Hmm.
I wanna track the shape of the tunnel underground, because eventually I'll fin
A side chamber, and that's where the armadillo would be.
Like, this is usually... Almost always a long process
If you're gonna succeed. It's gonna take a long time
I have seen the ache catch tons of armadillos doing this.
It's just a lot of energy we have to put in right now, here.
- Yeah. - We don't even know if it's at home right now.
You hear it?
No.
Bottom of the chamber.
It's okay, you tried.
Yeah.
Hold on. Don't move.
I saw a lizard.
Get him, get him!
- Did you get him? - Yes!
I caught a lizard!
Ooh, great! That's awesome.
Whew!
I feel so good right now.
Yeah, man. I'm impressed.
You did an awesome job.
Catching the lizard felt amazing, 'cause, like, we've been trying
To get a piece of meat or something.
I know it's small, but then it's certainly helpful to, like,
Just have a bite of somethin
We wanna make sure he's well-cooked,
Because there's always a possibility with stuff like lizards
They'll have parasites in their stomach, and we don't wanna get worms.
How does it taste?
This makes me happy, that's all.
Hmm.
We haven't had meat in a while.
You know what we need? We need a fish basket.
During the past nine days,
Rizza and andrew have only consumed around 300 calories
Between the two of them.
Every movement is just tiring.
So, really have to think what you need to do for the day and not just...
Do any random stuff.
We're really dying to get back to that river
And try to get some of those fish.
Our body can break down its own fat to give us energ
It's slow-paced, which is probably why we get winded so easily.
But protein out here?
You know, your body can't just manufacture protein.
It'll be worth it. There'll be ten fishes in here.
I like that optimism.
The ache actually have very strong gendered norms
About what a man and woman should do
Or shouldn't do out in the forest.
So, men, weaving, making baskets is a no-go.
But I don't feel that way, so for me it's a no-brainer.
Like, I'm gonna do everything I need to do to survive out here.
This looks done.
Hoo!
Just seems to be barely sprinkling now.
We've got good cloud cover.
How do you feel? Should we go ahead and go?
- Yeah. - I think we should.
It's gonna take some trial and error to figure ou
A comfortable way to carry this thing.
Even though it's a mile hike we're really dying to get back to that river
And try to get some of those fish.
We haven't had any significant protein since day five,
And at this point, our bodies really need this you know?
We've got to find some more substantial food
To get us through this challenge.
Wow, so much water.
I see the waterfall.
It's right over there.
Oh.
We have to turn around and go back to the camp.
Just gotta accept mother nature works this way.
We're already two-thirds of the way to the river.
I'm not excited. I feel like we've wasted a whole bunch of effort.
And I'm kind of pissed about it.
There's nothing you can do about it.
I feel like being out here on this hillside, with lightning,
Is probably not very safe.
But I'm not ready to just, like, give up and go home immediately.
That would be so many wasted calories.
Should we head back up to the cliffs
And see if can find a place to hunker down
And try to wait it out?
Yeah, let's do that.
Maybe the storm will blow over and maybe we'll still get to go down there.
Being out on this hillside,
There's not a whole lot of things that are taller than us around.
So our odds of getting struc by lightning are higher than normal.
At least in here, if thunder strikes, it's gonna hit the top of these rocks
And dissipate instead of coming down and getting us.
I think we just need to, like, head back.
I'm just kind of worried that the thunderstorm will stay, like...
Like, all night.
It's cold, no shelter, no fire.
We are gonna get sick, hypothermia...
And there's always another day...
I'm worried that the thunderstorm will stay, like, all night.
We're closer to the river than we are to the cave.
So, if we just wait, and if it clears up in a couple hours,
We get a partial day at the river, 'and that's still worth it.
But if we go back, it's a total waste.
Mother nature won't work on your schedule.
Andrew's always stubborn.
He doesn't reassess everythi when it goes wrong.
Imagine you traveled for three hours just to summit a mountain.
Halfway through the hike, it's like a whiteout.
- Yeah. - And you have to turn around.
It's disappointing, but you cannot get pissed.
Well, I'm not ready to give up yet,
Because it's still morning time.
Mmm.
So, I would like to wait an hour or two.
It's gray, and I don't see any sign of it breaking.
Time to head back.
Rather than carrying the fish basket all the way home,
I just leave the fish basket, and hopefully we'll be able to find it.
The breeze.
I wish we could've avoided that we came back earlier.
But I think he's seeing my point of view.
We made it. Home sweet home.
Let's see if I can get this fire started.
Whew, what a day.
Today was... Was a hard day.
Hopefully we're successfully gonna be able to get the food that we want
And, you know, get the energy and protein that we need.
It's been long enough since we've had any big food wins.
I'm thinking about tapping into that beehive.
Yeah.
It's literally right there.
Yeah.
When we get over there and just start doing it,
I'll walk you through some of the advice
About how to do this without getting harassed as heavily.
If they're getting on you, don't, like, start panicking
And flailing your arms and slapping like crazy.
Just grab it, pull it off.
Can I just trust yo on this one?
I don't think I wanna do it.
Okay. That's fine.
'cause on my first day, they went to my hair.
Ow! Bees. I got stun
I have hair, and they're, like, they love my hair so much.
I am gonna panic.
- Okay. - 'cause that day I was like totally.
Well, now you're not. You'll be far away.
With the ache, I've assisted on a lot of honey extractions.
But I've never been the lead extractor.
My plan with this beehive I smoke it out.
I wanna build a nice smoky fire up underneath.
That should make the bees sedate enough
That I can try to get into their hive and scoop out the honey.
I see the bees are coming out.
If we get something out of that bee's nest, that would be really awesome
We're pretty low on the energy right now.
Honey is a top resource to every single tribe that gets it.
It's like the gold of survival.
I'm nervous for andrew.
Gotta start stayin low, because now the bees are getting a little agitate
They're starting to come after me.
That's not good.
Well, now they're not happy.
That's a lot of bees.
They definitely don't like it when I do that.
Usually when they start getting me on the balls, that's the cue.
Just back off a little bit.
Rizza.
Mmm.
This might not happen.
That...
Beehive is some sort of a resin.
And it is...
harder than a termite's nest.
And no matter how much I smoke 'em,
If I have to start pounding on the beehive,
They get pissed, and they start biting me.
Even with a smoke.
So, are you continuing or...
Got one last thing I wanna attempt
Before I give this up completely.
This resin is actually really flammable.
Why don't I just take a chunk of resin
And put it right next to the entrance of the bees' nest?
I'm hoping that will help soften up the wall of the structure.
See how they feel about that!
Hope this works.
Golly, that stuff burns like crazy.
Now the fire's putting out a bunch of black smoke.
I'm gonna wait until enough of the wall of the hive has burned away
For me to be able to get into it.
And then I'm gonna try dowsing the flames with water...
And see if I can get in there without burning myself.
Oh, yeah!
Oh, thank you, lord!
Oh, man.
It's hard to get it out, but there's honey in there now.
Hey, rizza.
Mmm.
I'm finally getting some honey out of this thing.
That's amazing, dude.
Look at that honey running down my fingers.
Thanks for doing this, andrew.
You know, I wasn't much of a help.
Glad to be able to do it.
I'm just glad it was successful.
It's really sweet.
Yeah. It's like stupid sweet.
The basic idea here is...
Grab a bundle, squeeze all the honey out
As much as you possibly can
And lick off any honey that's left and toss it.
This is all larvae.
Like...
Bug fat.
Ugh.
You okay?
I'm okay.
That's a lot of honey.
Yeah. Too much honey will make you sick.
- I need to wash my mouth. - Ugh.
It's too sweet.
I just need to sleep.
Dude, I hope I get through the night okay,
'cause my stomach's not feeling great.
Mmm, it's just that nasty residual taste.
You think you're done puking?
Oh, man.
Not entirely sure what the cause is,
But I think it was just the larvae.
Hopefully that's all there is,
And I don't do it for the rest of the night.
One of our challeng out here is we only have one container.
We don't have any other place to store this honey.
The best we can do is put it in a platano leaf,
But that only works as long as you're holding the leaf.
Oof, that's dark.
Can honey get contaminated?
Honey doesn't spoil. It doesn't grow bacteria.
It's antibiotic.
Make sure you're in a position
That you're gonna be comfortable holding for, like, 20 minutes,
'cause I go get water, I come back,
-I boil water, I bring it out... -oh.
You drink it, and then we pour it back in.
You can't set the platano leaves down at any point.
Andrew is more worri about saving the honey.
If my teammate is having illness,
Nothing else would matter to me.
I mean, health is more important than anything else.
How are you holding up, rizza?
I'm getting surrounded by bees.
But I'm fine here.
Just go ahead, do your thing.
Okay.
Obviously the cause is the honey.
The resin was flammable, and could've, like, mixed.
I don't know if he's in denial
Because he's put so much work into it and he's so sure about it.
Are you feeling irritable because you're feeling sick?
Mmm-hmm.
Okay. Well, just remember, I'm on your team.
I'm doing all this, trying to help you feel better.
I know.
He did get me some water, but with mixed honey in it, which...
It's not really what I'm asking for.
I don't want to waste a single drop of this stuff.
Ugh, threw up again.
- You threw up again? - Mmm-hmm.
- Are you ready to throw away the honey? - Yeah.
As nice as it would be to have those 1200 calories,
It's a lot nicer to keep your fluids in your body
And not be sick and throwing up.
So I think it's time to get rid of that honey.
What a shame.
I wish he listened early on.
He had to puke again just to realize that I'm actually right.
It feels like there's been tension building up over the last week.
Not gonna lie, of course I'm sick of you.
I mean, you are as well, I'm pretty sure.
- Like... - yeah.
You only get irritated 'cause of, like, the things
That's been happening recently.
I'm sick, so I get annoyed. -yeah.
You're really stubborn.
You did not want to like, listen to me...
And consider the fact that the honey was actually poisoned.
Yeah.
If I'm not your partner, I think people would already, like,
Not appreciate your attitude.
So how are you feeling this morning?
Oh, yeah, I feel pretty weak.
I wanna go to the river today.
Um, do you wanna come with me or do you just wanna stay here and rest?
Yeah, I'm staying in.
I'm gonna have "me" time today.
Just probably gonna gather wood...
- That would be good. - Relax.
Okay. Enjoy it.
Get some rest and rejuvenate.
Two weeks...
Being with andrew 24/7, I just need an alone time.
I will see you later. Have a good day.
Last night, it hurt my feelings for her to say,
"your stubbornness is a weakness, and would drive other people crazy."
But my philosophy comes from hunter-gatherers that I worked with.
You have to work. You have to solve problems.
You gotta feed yourself.
The basket should be just past these rocks.
I hope it gives us some fish.
Oh, man.
I'm so happy to be here.
I've been waiting to get back to this spot.
So, now I gotta find some bait.
This really seems like the kind of river
You'd find a lot of crawfis and shrimp in.
Ah, yes!
Bet this guy will make good bait.
Maybe we'll turn a small catch into a big catch.
Okay. Let's launch this thing.
Come on, fishy, eat the shrimp.
Now we give it time to work.
I'm just gonna go chill in the waterfall
And just relax for a little while.
Rizza's missing out.
I hope she's enjoying her day to herself.
It's really nice to have an alone time.
Just not making decisions, going back and forth.
Just separating myself from him is good for me.
Meditation helped me clear my headspace and just reset
So I'm ready for day 21.
I'm gonna check the basket now.
Fingers crossed.
Dear lord, please let there be some fish in there.
I hope, I hope.
Nada, nada.
Well, the best you can do is try.
Rizza.
- How has your day been? - It was very good.
How'd your day go?
It went good. We didn't get any fish, unfortunately.
- Oh, well, you tried. - Yeah.
But, uh, wouldn't that be sweet if the next time we went down that way,
It was just a fish down there?
- Just one in the basket. - Yeah.
Fudgesicle. This sucks.
This basket's nowhere to be seen.
Yeah, of course.
Oh, dude.
Check out over there, where I peed last night.
- All the bees. - Oh, my god.
Andrew always goes to the bathroom somewhere nearby.
Like, please stop.
I just get annoyed.
-I peed on some of those leaves... -oh.
But I don't know exactly which ones, 'cause it was pitch black.
Like, what the hell?
Fudgesicle. This sucks.
Fish trap is gone.
Oh. There's a pineapple.
Thank you, lord.
Yeah, that's a good one, too.
Dude, this is awesome.
There's another one.
Number three.
Golly, these ants are killing me.
But, risk-reward, I'd say.
Food beats bug bites.
Rarely found in the wild, these pineapples are smaller
But have more sugar than regular pineapples.
Okay, now I gotta work my way down.
I like being able to provide for a partner,
And so I'm really excited t be able to show this to her
- welcome back. - Thank you.
- How'd it go? - I got seven pineapples.
- Oh - oh, god.
Damn.
They're huge.
I was so surprised with the pineapples.
I did not expect that.
Great job, andrew.
Thank you.
Thank you. You're so sweet.
You're welcome. I am sweet.
Yes.
- Is it good? - Mmm-hmm.
Finding those pineapples,
From what he said, it's got really thorny bushe with plenty of ants around.
So, for him to do that, it's very admirable,
And I'm very, very thankful for that.
I'm really glad. I feel like you and I were developing some tension.
And I'm glad that seems to be over.
-We seem to be back on the same page, and... -yeah.
Yeah, I know it's a chore. I'm sorry.
We do have a hard hike ahead of us.
This challenge is not over.
Today, I decided I wanted to make a little hat.
Having something to keep the sun off my nose
Especially when we have to hike through the open, sunny areas.
That's gonna keep me comfortable.
This is the prettiest and ugliest hat I've ever made.
The weather's not good.
It seems like it's gonna rain again.
It is constantly dumping all over us.
Day 21.
I'm getting out of here.
This is where we're camping.
Extraction is down here, so I guess we need to go down...
- down to the river. - To the river.
To reach their extraction point six miles away,
Andrew and rizza must first hike over a mile
In the intense triple-digit heat to the river crossing.
There they will need to watch for black caiman.
Capable of swimming at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour
And growing 17 feet in length,
They have been known to attack humans.
After a four-mile trek to a rocky ridge,
They will have to navigate a mile-long labyrinth of caves and tunnels
Full of disease-carrying bat
Before reaching their extraction point on the other side.
With this heat, we should drink a lot of water today.
Hundred degree heat will drain your energy super quick.
If we get all this extra water into our hair,
It's just gonna do evaporative cooling.
- You feel ready? - Yeah.
Let's do it.
Whew, the heat.
I'm ready to get to that river.
There's not a lot o good, shallow places to cros
I think we're gonna have to swim it.
- There could be caimans, though. - Yeah.
We have to be cautious.
Just need to swim really fast
- So we can get out of the river. - Yeah.
This is caiman territory, and this water is deep.
And if there's a spot where they're gonna be, it's right here.
You feel comfortable? You feel strong?
Let's do it.
Caimans camouflage well.
The color of the water is the color of the caiman.
It's really scary for me.
Almost.
- whew, the sun. - yeah. Brutal
This is the hottest part yet
Maybe we can find a route up into those trees.
- It's pretty good shade out here. - Yeah.
Wow.
It's like a whole another cave system.
Bat cave.
- Oh, my gosh. - Oh, wow.
A bat just went in front of my face.
Oh, man, look at that.
It's crazy.
I bet you there's some monsters living in here.
Hell yeah.
We're gonna go through it.
For sure. Okay.
Oh, dude. Ow.
Oh, my god. I can't do this.
Almost got it.
Look at all these bats up ahead of us.
Bats are, like, everywhere.
Yeah, buzzing around my head.
Be careful.
Holy.
The light at the end of the tunnel.
We made it.
I'm feeling pretty weak.
Focus on your breathing.
You got it.
Dude...
Are you hearing what I'm hearing?
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my god.
Oh, my gosh. We made it.
Oh. Great job, rizza.
Oh, my goodness.
- Dude. - You're awesome.
Oh, thank god for this truck.
We made it.
Knowing I am the first filipino
To accomplish this 21-day challenge, that's crazy.
Feel like waving the flag right now.
Thanks for helping me.
That last little bit, pushed through.
We got each other, dude.
- Victorious! - Whoo!
I think that the ache would be really proud of me
For coming out here and enduring this environment.
I feel like I'll be able to relate to them in a totally new way.
Thanks for being a great partner.
Thank you, too, rizza, for being a good partner.
I really appreciate everything that you've done
Thank you.
Rizza has a lot of mental strength and a positive attitude.
We may have different survival strategies,
But we came through it together, and we finished as a team.
We had each other's backs all the way to the end.
Over the course of 21 days, andrew lost 38 pounds.
His primitive survival ratin rises from a 6.8 to a 7.4.
Being an asian woman to be that role model,
It's crazy.
But I probably couldn't have done this without andrew.
He's a hard-working person.
He's got a lot of skills.
Rizza lost 19 pounds.
Her psr rises from a 5.8 to a 6.6.
I really appreciate this bond, this partnership
And how me made it to day 21.
So long, colombia!
