Original subtitles

Hopefully, we're almost there.

Look, I see the water.

And a dock.

What the hell!

Is that a lodge?

It's kind of spooky.

Pretty rickety.

Yeah.

Oh, the whole thing is shaking. Do you feel that?

Yeah.

When do you think this was abandoned?

30-40 years, maybe.

I have no idea why it's abandoned.

Maybe there's a huge predato that was eating the small children.

Maybe it's haunted.

I can't really se my surroundings very well.

This is like, a very narrow space.

Having to walk through

Kind of, knee deep water the whole time,

And not being able to see where I'm stepping,

That'll definitely be an issue.

Totally out of my element.

Every crazy animal that you see in a zoo, it's here.

Really insane and I feel...

Crazy!

In the vast wilderness of botswana,

Lies the okavango delta,

Created by the floodwaters of the okavango river.

Unlike most rivers that empty into the ocean,

The okavango spills into botswana's thorn-scrubbed grasslands,

Forming a maze of mosquito-infested marshes,

And a network of narrow canals,

Teeming with some of africa' fiercest wildlife.

I've seen elephants,

I'm seeing, uh, some hippos.

With daytime temperatures soaring into the 90s,

The swampy delta is an oasi for 6-ton bull elephants,

And the most dangerous anima on the continent,

The hippopotamus,

That kills more than 500 people per year,

And can charge at over 30 miles per hour.

Feeling a little nervous.

Feeling excited.

No turning back.

My name is gabriel. I'm a geologist.

When it comes to survival, I've been in the boundary waters for 32 days,

Moab for 15 days,

And I haven't died yet.

I teach wilderness therapy,

Focused on learning survival skills,

Which is a really great preparation for this challenge.

When I'm not practicing survival techniques,

On the side, I do drag.

I've done drag at clubs.

Her name is miss chievous,

And miss chievous, uh, takes no from anyone.

Being an outdoorsy gay guy,

I wanna show that you can challenge yourself to whatever limit.

And you can be fabulous

And you know, survive outside.

Test me, challenge me, you try to put me in a box,

But I'm here to slay and I'm gonna kill this challenge.

Have integrity.

You say you're gonna do it, do it.

Don't be a little bitch.

Gabriel has the confidence

To tackle the most extreme survival challenge,

But a lack of experience in the african bush

Could break down his resolve quickly.

He begins with a primitive survival rating

Or psr of 6.2.

I am so stoked to be here, right now.

This is the one of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen.

I'm super lucky to be here, right now,

And I can't wait to explore this place a lot more.

I'm marissa. I'm 31 and I work in the outdoor industry.

I studied both anthropology and environmental science,

Learning how to be a wilderness first responder.

I mostly grew up in michiga but I recently decided to pick up a nomadic life,

Alpine climbing and mountaineering,

Traveling all over the western united states.

This is my truck that I currently live out of.

It's a mess right now.

I am doing this challenge to see how all of my cumulative experiences

Uniquely prepares me

When I am starving naked in the wilderness.

I'm usually on my own,

So I'm really looking forwar to doing this challenge with a partner.

Hoping that they're supportive, that they have skills,

All the important things that'll help us both finish the 21 days.

Marissa's strong survival instincts

Have gotten her through many solo globetrotting adventures,

But working as a team may prove challenging

Despite her strong desire to have a partner.

Marissa starts with a psr of 6.5.

All right.

Who's ready to see my dad bod.

Time to get naked.

I'm ready to get the ball going,

And I'm ready to embrace nature.

Hopefully, 21 days.

Time to get my giblets tanned.

I feel comfortabl being naked.

To prepare for this challeng I found a nude beach in mexi

Because I can't have, like a completely white ass.

All right. I guess this is actually happening.

Oh, my gosh!

I wonder who it's gonna be.

I haven't seen a vagina in many years.

Hey!

Hello!

I can't believe we're here.

We're here!

Oh, and this landscape is amazing, it's so unique.

- Hi! - Hi, what's up?

- What is your name? - Gabriel.

- Gabriel. I'm marissa. - Yeah.

Oh, my god! You're stunning!

Thank you.

Too bad I don't like women.

Oh, okay. Yeah, that's fine. We're gonna go along great.

I haven't seen a woman fully naked in years.

Wow!

Okay. So, cool!

- This is... - Well, this is it.

I know.

- It's just the same as I remembered. - Okay, good.

Actually, I feel very excited and actually, it makes me more comfortable,

Um, to know that my partner is gay with no sexual tensio

And we can just focus on survival.

Yeah, where are you from?

I am from denver.

- I kind of live all over. - That's cool.

Yeah, and I just kind of...

I decide, like where I'm gonna go kind of based on, like, climbing,

- And that sort of world. - Okay.

- You have that's such a nomadic lifestyle. - Yeah.

- Yeah. Yeah. - Cool.

So, I mean, I guess we should get going.

We should.

Okay.

Marissa and gabri have each brought a personal item,

A knife and a fire starter.

And they've been given a po to keep them hydrated in the intense african heat

all right. We also have a map.

Let's see here.

Where?

Meet point, it looks like we're right here?

Yeah.

So, really only water source is right here.

Yeah.

Danger. Animals.

- Stay away. - So we don't wanna get there.

Stay away from that water.

So, this is... Looks like that's pretty much the only place to camp around here.

Yeah.

All right.

It's gonna be... That's gonna be a trek.

I know. Should get going.

- Okay, cool. - So, we can get a shelter and sleep well tonight.

- Yeah. - Cool.

Oh, this grass!

It's sharp.

I know.

Ooh, be careful. There's a lot of thorns here.

- Yeah. - I didn't realize so many types of...

Ooh! Ow! Yeah.

Acacia trees there are.

I was reading there's like

100 species of thorns,

- Out here. - Oh, my gosh! Really?

- Yeah. - I did not know.

I don't know if I wanted to know that.

Marissa is really great and super chill.

We vibe really well,

And I'm feeling really good about that.

Looks like a whol herd of something.

- See all that movement? On the tree lines? - Oh, yeah.

So close.

It's pretty crazy.

Keep your eyes peeled, because we're out in the open.

Yeah, and everything can see us.

This looks like a good spot for...

- Lions to hang out. - Yeah, there's so many things to hide behind.

- And snakes. - There's not much visibility.

Yeah. So, let's be quiet through here, I think.

Okay.

And just, like, keep our eyes open.

A lot of things grazing around here.

Yeah.

Oh, wow!

This whole thing is flooded

Oh, there's a really big hole here.

It's like hippo tracks.

They're really unpredictable they could charge.

Their mouths open at a super wide angle.

Hippos can open their mouths 180 degrees,

Because of the unique locati of the hinges in their jaws

they have a lot of power in their jaws.

So, I have a lot of respect for them, and I don't want to invade their space.

- It's really deep, so maybe let's cross... - okay.

Quicker.

Okay.

Looks like there's a good pathway through here, though.

Yeah.

Hopefully, we're almost there.

- You okay? - Look, I see the water.

Oh, my gosh! Yes!

- Finally! - We made it.

Heck, yeah!

A really big body of water.

Yeah.

Look at the hippos. All of the hippos.

Oh, my god!

There's like one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.

- Yeah. - And a dock.

And there's a dock?

Oh, !

What... - what the hell!

This is creepy!

Is that a lodge?

An old lodge?

Like, safari lodge?

I wanna go check it out.

It's like... built shelter already.

And it's probably in a good location,

Because somebody already built it there, right?

It's kind of spooky.

- You got it? - Yeah.

How old do you think... like, when do you think this was abandoned?

30, 40 years,

Maybe?

For generations,

Local tribes crafted grass-rooted huts that they lived in,

While they fished along these waterways.

A devastating drought many years ago drove them away.

Pretty rickety.

Um, so we have to be super careful when we're walking.

Yeah.

Wow!

Oh... The whole thing is shaking. Do you feel that?

Yeah.

This board is no bueno.

Good burning material.

Not gonna fall. It's not gonna fall.

I'm not sure if this will be, like a good place to build our shelter.

I feel, like the ceilings, they aren't high enough,

For a type of fire.

- You... - this is old. This is super old and super dry.

- Everything in here is flammable. - Yeah.

Yeah.

So, that's a problem, then,

Because we really need a fire in our shelter.

There's a lot of, like, wasps up here.

Oh, yeah.

- So... - it's like, mud wasps.

Keep moving on.

Yeah.

This really sucks.

It's nice to know that there's structure around,

But we definitely can't real use it to our advantage

Because of the decrepit shape it's in.

We're gonna be spending the majority of our time in our shelter,

And I don't know if I want the majority of our time to be on, like,

- A piece of wood that's falling apart. - Yeah.

- Shelter. - We need shelter.

What are you thinking?

Dude, this spot looks...

okay, this feels good, right?

Yeah.

If this is our main dwelling area, we could have... Enclosed it more.

- Okay. - I'm gonna take my knife

- And use some of the already premade thatching wall... - Mmm-hmm.

To put around as a barrier.

That's perfect.

God!

Marissa and gabri are anchoring their boma to the fishing village dock

Using bamboo wall sections gabriel cut down.

An enclosure of acacia tree branches with a fire inside

Will help them avoid being trampled by hippos in their sleep.

How you feeling?

- We need water soon. Should we start a fire? - Yeah.

I do.

Definitely a little frightening,

Because we're right near

Um, all these hippos.

I feel really good about what we accomplished.

Got it...

- which means water... - Is next!

Ah!

It tastes so good.

Even so burning hot, it's so good.

- This is it. - We're gonna smoke elephant dung.

With a water lily straw.

The bushmen used to smoke it to suppress their appetite,

And also, to cure headaches.

Wow.

Harsh.

- It's super harsh. - So harsh.

- Mmm. - Mmm. Mmm.

Wow!

Headache is gone.

-Yeah, it's like... -I'm not hungry anymore.

Yeah.

Whoo! Feel great!

I'm waking up, I don't know.

Don't think I've slept at all.

There's a lot of animal noises.

We just heard these crazy hippos,

Doing their deep gargles all night.

We have to remember that they're hippos.

Yeah, we've never heard these sounds before and it is crazy.

We're both feeling a little... Crazy and overwhelmed.

It's like, maybe 7:30.

Night one is done.

Um, I didn't sleep at all.

Definitely have noticed a lo of aches and pains today.

I'm tired, hungry, cranky.

I'm not mentally prepared for this.

Oh, I like that there's a pond up there, that I saw.

That might actually... there's no, like, hippos in there.

Did you see, were there water lilies there?

Mm-hmm. There were.

Gabriel had a really long night, last night.

I am a little bit worried about him.

Think we're gonna dig up some water lilies.

I'm hoping that finding foo will change everything,

And make everything feel better.

Think right here.

We can have every part of the water lily.

The flowers, the seeds, the stems, the lily pads.

- Oh, yeah. - Mm-hmm.

- You can just go right down the chute. - I know.

Yeah.

They look more like tubers, like little baby potatoes.

Yeah.

- Look. - You found one?

The whole thing.

We can eat that.

They taste like potato. It's just they're super starchy.

Oh, god! You have a really huge leech on the back of your leg.

Ah!

Okay, let's get out of here.

- Feel that sucking... - oh, my god!

Yeah.

Oh, gross.

It's really gross out here.

That freaked me out.

I feel like it got a lot of blood.

God, that was nasty.

Cheers.

Cheers.

It is so mushy.

They're very mushy.

Mmm.

It also kinda tastes like it smelled out there, you know?

- We're eating wetland. - Mmm-hmm.

Our first meal is such a disappointment.

I'm hoping that we can find, like an actual food source that you wanna eat,

And that you don't have to, like, gag down.

I cannot do this the whole time.

- Mmm. - Whoa!

What's wrong? What's wrong?

Where?

Oh, I see it.

- We're good. - Damn!

Cool. Well, I'm gonna try to sleep more.

Okay, I haven't slept.

It's the morning of day thre

I'm just picking up some heavy-duty leadwood,

From the broken down fishing hut railings, the debris.

Last night was really uncomfortable.

Right now, I am feeling super exhausted

I don't know if my body can do 21 days like this.

Hi! Did you sleep at all?

- Nah. - Oh, no!

- Yeah. - I dozed off a little bit.

No sleep.

Sleep.

Water.

You almost, like, take them...

For granted in the real world.

Hitting a wall.

Partner is not doing okay.

I'm hoping I can help talk him down,

Because I signed up to do th with somebody.

I don't really wanna do it alone.

So, what are you thinking about today?

Spotted a fig tree.

- Oh, nice. - So,

I think it'd be cool to go over there and see if we can get any figs.

Okay.

I really like that.

It looks like a fig tree.

We need to eat something substantial.

It could be a really good, u potential treasure gold mine

Oh, that's a massive hippo, just...

right by the fig tree.

Right. Going to the fig tree.

So, we're gonna have to kinda go around.

Do you think it's worth it?

- I say yes. - Okay.

Will that make you...

- Like, let's... - like...

- I think it would... It would feel good. - Okay.

Be able to last a bit?

- Yeah. - Okay, cool.

It's only day three.

Like, I want to help him sort of change his, like, mental state,

And try to, like, enjoy being here.

Be careful.

We are upwind from anything down here, so they'll smell us.

Okay.

But...

- Still look for movement. - M m-hmm.

I think thinking about figs as... I'm like...

Getting hungry

but I'm also preparing for there to not be,

'cause otherwise, then, it's gonna send, you know... -

I'm thinking abou figs as... I'm like...

Getting hungry

but I'm also preparing for there to not b

Because otherwise, then, it's gonna send, you know...-

oh, my god!

They... They ran all the way past there.

Holy ! That lion...

It was so close.

- All right, heart... - okay.

In this really tall grass, you can't really see much.

So, things can come out of nowhere.

My heart just, like, jumped

that was totally insane.

It's only day thre

And it's already as real as it can get.

We're so close.

Looks like the fig tree.

Do you see any fruit?

Don't see anything.

Of course.

I don't see fruit.

I'm, like, looking on the ground.

No, no figs.

This sucks.

I know. I don't wanna dwell on it too much, though.

- Okay. - There's no figs.

This was gonna be a really joyous victory, but...

It's not.

So...

it's really upsetting.

I feel like he's shutting down.

He's just kind of in a not good spot as far as feeling capable,

And comfortable being out here.

It would have been super nice.

- After walking all that way, that's for sure. - Yeah.

It would have.

How you feeling?

I can't sleep.

I can't get comfortable.

There's too many bugs.

It's like, overwhelming.

Ooh! Those look really bad.

It is, like, firm to the touch.

What can I... How... How can I help you? What can I do?

I don't know.

I'm really miserable.

I'm so sorry.

I don't want to g home,

But I can't do this on no sleep.

I can't.

Hey! Can I speak to you for a minute?

Yeah.

I don't really want to do this anymore.

So, I guess I'm gonna tap out of this challenge.

Um...

I mean, I don't wanna be here alone.

- Yeah. - Like, are you...

Are you 100% sure, or do you, like...

I think I'm...

- Gonna stick to my guns. - Okay.

You're fully capable...

To do this.

I know that I can, but...

This has...

My whole thing, like, in this was...

Like strategy, it was like, working with somebody.

- Like... - I know.

Figure things out together and be there for each other and...

Celebrate each other,

And I, like, don't have anyone to do that with.

Just being out her and being stripped of everything,

It makes you really,

I don't know, get into your head,

And think about your thresholds and what you're capable of.

We can hug it out.

Okay.

Yeah.

I came in thinking I was rea and mentally prepared for this.

And I wanted to be, but...

I'm not.

After only four days,

Gabriel's early departure drops his psr from 6.2 to 4.

I feel bad for leaving her.

I didn't have what it takes

To do this challenge,

But I feel like she can continue on,

And I think she has the mental strength to do this challenge,

And go all the way.

I didn't really think about not having a partner

During this challenge.

It makes things a lot harder

Um, there's not two people to do chores.

There's nobody to help me carry the really heavy leadwood and the firewood,

And it's also really hard to drag.

Oh, my god.

It's really dense, which is why it burns for so long,

But it's super heavy.

I'm usually very confident with being on my own,

But this is a survival situation,

And I don't have a partner to share the load anymore.

Last night was a little bit more difficult.

I got a lot less sleep.

It makes it so much harder to not have somebody to help with anything.

So heavy.

My plan for the day is to collect extra firewood.

I'll be doing this on my ow for two and a half weeks.

Like, I really wanna finish this challenge.

I went into this thinking it'll be, like, 80 or 90% mental,

And I definitely agree with that.

However,

The hardest about being her is being out here without having much at all to eat.

In the past seven days,

Marissa has consumed about 200 calories,

And expended 50 times that amount.

Oh, my gosh.

I see a snake.

Oh, my god!

Got it.

Okay.

Wow!

Marissa has caugh a spotted bush snake.

While not venomous,

It can inflict a painful bit with its needle sharp teeth

sorry, dude.

Ugh!

I'm sad that I had to kill a snake,

But also, really hungry,

And happy that it's gonna feed me today.

This is so wild. I can't believe I'm about to eat snake that I caught.

And I'm so hungry.

Thank you so much, snake.

Oh.

It's really good.

Like,

Seared.

Seared snake for lunch.

It tastes like... Kinda tastes like pulled pork.

Like, the consistency of it.

Catching that snake was like really what I wanted from this experience.

I just appreciate it so much and I needed it so much.

Super badass!

It's gonna be a good night.

There's pretty muc hippos feeding, splashing around

Outside of my boma every night, out in the reeds.

But there's one that came ou of the water.

I can hear it next to my boma, it's like eating all the reeds

Right next to the tree I'm under.

It's just really, really close.

Oh! Do you hear that?

There's stuff pretty close.

I'm feeling really hungry.

I haven't had a lot of good food yet.

I've seen fish activity across the hippo pond.

I know that there's... There's fish there.

So, it does give me, like, a little bit of hope that,

Like, okay, there are fish here,

And that channel is a good spot for them.

So, I just need to figure ou a way to get those fish.

I've got like, water buffalo tail,

That I found.

And the hair is super wiry and really, really strong.

Like, you know, it's really thin, so it'd make a really good fishing line.

Um...

So, I'm just finishing braiding this.

And then, I have this acacia thorn.

It should act as, like, a good hook.

There's a snail on the bottom of the lily pad.

This is perfect

For bait.

Haven't really seen fish anywhere else, and this seem like the best spot.

So, I'm just gonna keep my eye out and...

Stand and fish here for a little bit.

Ah!

Damn, like, right there.

This is the closest I've been to the hippos. This is pretty crazy.

It's hard, 'cause I can't see anything

The water's so murky, you can't tell if there's any fish.

Nothing.

Oh, my gosh!

It just ate my bait,

And it's gone.

So there's fish.

Okay, well.

There's hippos on the move, coming this way.

Hippos can swim twice as fast as humans,

And can hold their breath underwater for more than five minutes.

Whoa!

Definitely got closer.

Oh, my god.

Wow!

There's four of them, staring me down, right now.

So...

Okay, I got the message.

Definitely not worth it.

Way too risky.

I look so scrawny right now

I just kinda, like, looked at my body,

And it's weird, doesn't feel like I've lost any weight by looking at it now.

It's like, really absurd.

I think, like, I've lost all my muscle mass.

Every step is really slow.

It's hard to even talk.

It's getting really discouraging.

I really didn't wanna do this challenge, starving.

Um,

And I also didn't really wanna do it alone.

So...

It's starting to feel like..

Yeah, so this is just like, not what I was looking for.

I don't see signs of anything.

It's hard when I've gone so many days without big food success.

Right now, it just feels like I'm barel getting by.

Something smells so bad.

There's another piece of leadwood.

Oh, my god!

An impala.

Smells really rotten already.

Oh, yeah. It's like, completely rotting, like, in here.

It's like, bloated.

It's rotting.

There's a bite taken out of it, and but yet, it's so like, intact.

I'm starving, so is there anything I can salvage from this?

One of the shoulders has been in the shade.

So, like maybe, I could risk something.

All right, it's still bloody red in here,

Which is good.

Oh, my god!

Yay!

Holy!

So far, this meat looks pretty good.

This is actually happening.

I am in botswana and this is an impala,

And I'm about to eat this leg which has been dead for two days.

There's definitely a risk factor there,

But if I cook it really good

It could be okay.

Um, gonna try this.

I think it's good.

Wow.

This is just so good.

This isn't a super easy place,

But...

God! It's so cool when you like, find everything you need.

My body needed this so bad.

Wow, this is just so good.

Wow.

This challenge is exhausting

A lot of the endurance activities that I do,

You know that you're, like, at the end of your rope, but you still have more left.

Knowing that I only have a f days left, it might be the hardest days yet.

As long as I keep moving,

And keep going, like, I'll be able to make it.

Energy levels,

Um, consistently low,

But

I haven't had food since the impala leg,

Maybe, like, four days ago?

My plan is to get some bone marrow from the carcass.

That I got my meat from the other day.

I know that the marrow is good for, like, three weeks.

Bone marrow in rotting meat can last longer without spoiling

Because the bone that it is encased in,

Protects it from microbes,

That can cause salmonella.

Oh, jeez! Is it gone?

Gosh.

The whole thing is gone?

There's like, not even a trace of it.

Nothing is left.

Oh, look at this massive...

This elephant dung.

Looks pretty fresh.

Speaking of elephants,

Look at that.

Oh, my god!

He's checking us out.

So crazy.

What I've read is that usually,

The bulls will be alone.

Yeah.

So,

There is potential.

We need to not get close to it.

- Incredible. - Just staring at us.

That's wild.

The whole thing is gone?

Look, there's like, a couple of tufts of hair, but that's it.

What the heck!

The fact that the whole thin is gone,

Something big had to have dragged it off for sure.

Like, lion or leopard.

Oh! There's a leg, I think.

Crazy.

Whoa!

Yeah, I don't know if this'll work, we'll see.

So many ants on it.

Hopefully, it's full of bone marrow.

I did not know much about bone marrow,

Except that I've had it twice at very fancy restaurants.

So, I know that it's delicious.

I mean, it's rich.

It's like, really, really rich.

Gosh, it tastes like...

Fatty, it's like butter, I mean, my body is like,

"oh, my god, butter, like, I'm eating straight butter."

The flavor is so nice.

It is so good.

Hoping it will give me like, a little bit extra energy boost,

Like a little bit of like a oompf

To get me through extraction.

Well, that was not very much,

But it was incredible.

It's first light of the morning of day 21.

Everyone's waking up now, including me.

I'm so excited about today.

It's extraction day.

I have, like, a hike out of here.

It's gonna be super-hot.

So, just making sure to stay hydrated,

And then, just like, push through it.

All right.

Bye, boma!

So, I have to head this way,

Which means I need to cross in the shallows.

To get to her extraction point,

Marissa will have to wade through the swampy wetlands

Steering clear of aggressiv packs of hippos,

That can snap off a human li

With a single bite.

Marissa will then have to hi two miles,

Through sagebrush and mopane thickets, on the lookout for lions,

That can hear prey up to a mile away.

Finally, a mile and a half trek across the scorching thorny desert,

Will lead her to a large bod of water,

Where she will be extracted by boat.

Cool.

This is not gonna be easy.

We have a long way to go.

I hope I have enough energy to finish.

There's like, a hippo highway over here,

That'll get me to the sage grasses.

My feet are so cut up from all of the grasses in the reeds.

When they're wet, they just get like, torn up.

This part's going to be really slow.

Oh, my god!

Here's a carcass.

A lion probably killed it.

Just need to make sure that I'm super aware here.

Definitely tired.

Just trying to keep moving.

It's like, really hot out.

And I'm thirsty. I'm trying not to pass out.

Oh, whoa.

Big body of water.

I think on the map...

Means my extraction point is close.

Oh, my god! I see a vehicle.

It's coming so fast. Yes.

Oh, what! It's a boat! yes.

Oh, my god! I wish I could run there.

I did it!

This is the best.

I did it!

This challenge was really difficult.

My partner tapped on day fou

It was really hard

To lose him so early,

But seeing what I'm capable of,

I'm really proud of myself.

I'm very overwhelmed, right now.

Living a nomadic life,

I have never thought about being in one place long enough

And I wonder, like, what I would find.

Just knowing that I can exis for 21 days with pretty much nothing,

Is like a really big takeaway for me.

I just feel like a deeper sense of peace about like,

Myself and my life after completing this.

Oh, this feels so good!

After surviving 21 days in the okavango delta,

17 of them alone,

Marissa lost a total of 24 pounds.

Her final psr rises from 6.5 to 7.6.

I'm done.

This is amazing!

Whoo!
