an endurance-event aficionado.

I think I'm gonna have to figure out a way to adapt.
I've been a survivalist since I was a little squirt.
I love being out in the wild...
That's some deep snow.
...and I homestead in Alaska.
We don't have running water here, so,
this is how we do showers.
Heat the water up on the stove,
pour,
and instant shower.
Being a police officer defined me as a being.
While I was on duty, I got struck by another vehicle,
causing me to lose sensation and dexterity in my arm.
I was told that I had to medically retire
and it made me question myself and my abilities.
And I know that I can do this,
but I'm gonna prove it to myself and everyone else.
This is my opportunity.
Cause I don't get conquered.
Anything can be overcome.

Jon: The water would be the huge concern.
This is obviously not drinkable.
It does need to be purified somehow.
Might be a lot harder than I expected.
That's exciting. I like a challenge.
Ever since I was a little kid, I've been into the outdoors.
Trap-making, fire-making, some fun with snares.
The biggest reason that I wanna take on this challenge
is because men have gotten really soft.
Most people sit in front of a computer
for eight hours of work,
go home, and just sit on the couch
and they're completely happy with that.
In a lot of ways, I feel like I'm starting to become one
of those weak-minded individuals.
I wanna make sure that my edges are always sharpened.
I came out here to prove that I can get through the challenge
and I'm ready to take it on. Let's do this.
Narrator: Jon and Gwen have been dropped off
on the southern coast of Mexico,
a sun-scorched landscape of barren forests,
mangroves,
and coastal dunes.
But the real killer here is the extreme heat.
The 80% humidity and scorching temperatures combine,
producing a heat index 25° higher,
making it feel like 130° in the middle of the day,
accelerating the risk of severe dehydration
and heatstroke.
I guess this is it.

Narrator: As an athlete, Jon has endurance,
but his overconfidence in his physical abilities
might work against him over the 21-day challenge.
He begins with a primitive survival rating of 6.7.

Narrator: As a homesteader, Gwen has solid primitive survival skills,
but coming from freezing temperatures in Alaska
and the challenge of dealing with an arm injury
sets her psr at 6.9.

of a freshwater source.
Let's try to beat feet up to these hills,
we get over these mountains, and down to this oasis.

we gotta worry about, for sure.

Narrator: Jon and Gwen's water source
is a steep climb over four miles away.
As they head out in the midday sun,
they'll have to move cautiously
to avoid hidden threats underfoot.
The forest is swarming with hornets;
lethal Mexican moccasin snakes;
and tarantulas,
whose scissor-like fangs
release a toxic venom.
♪
What do you think about this humidity, so far?
It sucks. [ Laughs ]
They'll also have to watch for signs of heatstroke,
as temperatures are already in the triple digits.
♪
[ Buzzing ]
No, this is my first time out of the country.
- Nice. - Dang sweat outta my eyes.
Jon: I might be worried about her in this heat
a little bit more than I will.
I lived in this humidity for a little bit of time
in my life. She's never been in it, so,
I'm gonna have to keep a close eye on her.
This is a teamwork challenge,
so, I'm gonna make sure she's okay.
[ Insects buzzing, leaves crunching ]
Nice big hornets' nest up there.
Those are gnarly.
Narrator: Hornets aggressively guard their nests
and deliver more venom per bite than any other stinging insect.
Let's stay away from those.

[ Sniffles, grunts ]

Boy, you could feel that sun when you're in it.

It's hot.
A little bit too hot to be travelin'
through that direct sun right now.
[ Sigh ]
We are in some of the most extreme humidity
that I have ever experienced
and it is sucking every bit of water out of me.
Narrator: The high heat is causing Gwen to sweat and dehydrate,
but the extreme humidity is stopping the sweat
evaporating and cooling the body.
If Jon and Gwen don't get out of the sun
and replenish the water they're losing,
their bodies will overheat,
making them vulnerable to heatstroke.
How you feeling? You alright?
- Overheated. - Yeah?
- Take your time. - Yeah.
'Cause we don't need any of that.
You're pretty pale, too.
I know. It's draining from my body real quick.
Yep, both of us are gettin' wiped out pretty quick here.
I've climbed many a mountain
and they all suck just the same.

in three weeks.

Typically don't do my endurance races barefoot,
but, this is very similar to the willpower it takes
to get through something.
Every step sucks, but, we're gettin' there.
My partner?
Doin' fantastic, so far.
I don't know about that.

He helps me out when I get low.

So that helped to create that instant bond,
where I could start to trust him.

So we're finally at the top of this mountain
and this is only halfway, if not even that,
so, we've really gotta be conscious
of how much daylight we have.

and, that way, we're not traveling a trail in the dark
that we're not familiar with.

Didn't quite make it to our destination,
but, we pushed as hard as we could

Night number 1 is in the books.
We're tired.
Ready to get to our new shelter.
Narrator: By the morning of day 2,
Gwen and Jon have lost approximately a gallon of water,
along with essential electrolytes.
They desperately need to hydrate
and find shelter out of the blazing sun.
How you feelin'?
I need water.
Yep. Sun's startin' to get there, huh?
Yep, it is.
All that means you need to stop.
Dehydration is a serious thing.
You can pass out from it. Your body can shut down.
You gotta get to water.

We're getting down to this water source.

I know. We're workin' our way down there.
I'm hopin' there's some water down there.

We're not far from the beach at all.
No, it's really close.

Think it's in that little rock crevasse?

I'm pretty disappointed that we worked our asses off
to get here to find this.

This flow's coming straight out of the ground underneath,
so it's a spring coming out of the mountain,
suckin' water out of the walls.

Narrator: Because it's been filtered
through the underground soil and rock,
harmful microbes have been removed from the water,
making it safe to drink.

Lets go down to the beach and see what we got down there.

That is some hot sand. Ho-ly crap.

It's fairly shady under here.

It's really easy to weave palm leaves in all of this.
Might be perfect for a long-term shelter.

I'm really glad that we put our shelter where we did.
We couldn't put it on the beach.
It would be way too hot.
Tucked into the hillside, where it is,
it's just, it's warm in there and humid,
but it's not in the direct sunlight
and that's a godsend for us
because, otherwise, we would fry out here.
Alright, it's our first evening in camp.
That's where we're gonna be sleeping.
That's where we're gonna put our fire.

It's frickin' miserable
with these sand fleas and bugs.

So, we're having a huge problem with biting sand fleas
and ants in our camp.
So, just see if we can get a fire started.

It's just not lighting.

How you feelin'?
Pretty tired.
This tree, when were laying under it last night,
was just raining bugs on us.
Not fun.
Sand fleas here are hell on earth.
They bite us all over.
They're absolutely horrid.
Narrator: Sand fleas are parasitic crustaceans
and they leave small, irritating welts,
but if Jon and Gwen get a fire going,
the smoke can act as a natural insect repellent.

Unfortunately, some of our most valuable resources
are on the opposite side of the beach right now,
so it's taking a lotta energy to walk down here,
carry stuff back,
for things like fire-making and shelter-building.
And we only have a limited time to do it in a day.
Gwen, you're a tough girl.
[ Laughing ]
For a survival situation, doin' pretty good.
[ Chuckle ]
What's exciting to me about this challenge is
that I'm gonna have to do what I need to do
to get over and get past this injury that I sustained.
It's a limited mobility in my arm.
My approach to survival is the same as a police officer:
You have to be in the mindset of being able to go in
and take care of whatever situation
you need to take care of and you handle it.
There's no room for bein' scared.
Jon: Gwen is doin' everything that she thought she could
before her accident.
She's definitely pullin' her part.
She'll do everything she can,
because she's that kind of person,
to hold up her half of the bargain.

We're gonna figure out a way to get some shade here.
We are hopin' to be able to get our shelter done today
and try to get that fire goin'
so we can abate these bugs a little bit.
If we get those palms,
we can just kinda weave 'em through it.
Yep. We're gonna do the best we can
to stuff these in there
and create us a nice, fortified roof.
You can see this area, now, it's still pretty shaded
and we're gonna make it even more shaded,
so we're gonna have to get more of those palm leaves.

The one tree on this whole beach
that we need to harvest,

First night of actual sleep.
Yeah, we actually did get a couple hours
here and there, asleep, on and off.
The anxiety of keepin' the fire going
kinda was a natural alarm clock
every once in a while, I think.
But it's a beautiful thing.

Guess I'm gettin' hungry.
Yeah, I've had one or two small rumbles.
We just go catch crabs and throw 'em in around the stove.
- Let's do it. - Just fill up our bags and, uh.
There's a bunch of them right out there,

The Jersey really comes outta me
when I'm catchin' crabs, apparently.

We were pretty happy to discover the crabs.
The problem is being able to catch 'em.
The crabs are really fast, so, we burn a buncha calories
runnin' around the beach chasin' after crab.
It is a killer. It sucks the strength
and life right out of ya.

I caught a crab. [Chuckle]

That is epic.
I'm so happy with that right now.
That's gonna be amazing.

This'll be really good.
I've exerted a lot of energy today.

Not filling, but very tasty.
I could probably eat about 10 of those.
Good protein boost.

It's a big win.

Something just bit me.

Not too red, so that's good.
- Hurt like the dickens last night. - Yeah.
Last night, I got bit by a tarantula.
Been bit by spiders before,
but, I've never had a feel of that fierce of a fire,
just really intense fire feeling right under your skin.
Narrator: Tarantula fangs release venom that contains toxins.
The venom can cause extreme pain that lasts for days.
If it was different light conditions
and I would've seen a tarantula coming into camp,
he would've been dinner.
So, he's lucky that it was dark and I was asleep.
[ Chuckling ]
Don't be gettin' bit by something
- and leave it on me. - Hey, I
blocked that thing from you.
You should be happy. I saved your life.

We need to eat.

I'm definitely gettin' hungry.
Thinkin' about makin' traps for crab.

So, we've got two different types of traps goin' on.
Mine is kind of a traditional fish-trap funnel,
also works for crabs.
And Gwen has more of a straight weaving-style basket
that will also have a similar funnel
on the top of it as well.
We're gonna double our chances,
put one in each end of the beach,
on each tide pool tonight, and see how we fare.

Our energy levels are low.
We really would love to get a nice, hearty protein meal,
so, we're gonna continue to do everything we can.
We have no choice but to keep trying.
Everything you decide to do
when you're on low energy reserves, the way we are,
it all has consequences,
so, you have to weigh the risk/reward.
If it was just walk out and pick it up off the beach,
- it wouldn't be survival, so. - Yeah.

Just tryin' to find the right base stick.
Right now, our goal is to see what we can get for food.
The plan is to build a figure-four deadfall,
and, hopefully, be able to trap a large animal.
I don't know how far this is gonna roll.
Just be careful down there.

Well, I found the rock.
- [ Laughing ] - The one that went rolling by?

Just think: This is how they built the pyramids.

It's tedious work, but it's worth it.
We definitely need the protein
that any mammal will provide,
of any decent size.
[ Grunting ]

Okay, real gentle, start settin' it down.

Animal grabs this piece of fruit that's
on the end of the stick,
then, that will engage this trigger mechanism
and the rock will fall on top of the animal
and crush it to death.
This is as primitive as you get.
No special tools needed, just a knife,
to whittle out some wedges;
three sticks; And a heavy rock.
It will be effective.
We will have something in our trap.

Took the end of my toe off.
Ouch.

Gwen stubbed her toe, trying to get
around the fire, and it's pretty rough.

I don't think I'm gonna be able to walk up the hill today.
I know.
- Take it easy on it. - Yep.

I'm disappointed that that happened
because it definitely sets me back
and it throws a loop for my partner,
who has to pick up the slack for me,
which sucks, because I can't walk on it very well
without risk of splitting it back open.
So, I'm gonna give it a couple days, see how it heals up.
It is what it is and... I'm, uh, tending the fire.

that I have to pick up the extra slack.
Double-time on the firewood is the biggest thing,
but, I don't mind playin' double duty.

Jon and I's relationship right now is steady.
We're still truckin' through.
I know he's feelin' the heat because he's havin'
to pull the whole load, but he accepts it
and we agreed to just work through it
and just push on through.

Sticks on the fire.

We got a thing goin'.

[Hushed] Yeah. Realistically,
we probably only have two days max of firewood.
Every night, we burn about half of that,
so, keep it goin'.

- [ Exhaling forcefully ] - I'm extremely grateful for Jon.
He's been able to pick up my slack
and shoulder that burden on himself,
which is above and beyond something he needs to do,
but he's willing to do it,
which makes him a fantastic partner.
Every time I come out to get a load of firewood,
I wanna maximize every trip
[ exhaling forcefully ] Before
the sun gets too hot because, you know,
this midday heat is just gonna drain me.
This isn't a mountain. It's a [bleep] beach.

My toe's doin' very well.
It's tender, but it's healed over, so it's good.

At this point, I really wanna take some
of the load off of Jon...

And shoulder that burden and push myself on it.
Biggest major hurdle right now is,
given the lack of food that we've have had...
I get dizzy every time I stand up.
It's compounded out here
without havin' proper food in me.
I don't think we'll have adequate protein
to get to extraction.
Lost a lotta weight. I know that.
My body's actually consuming itself.
I can tell my muscles aren't as strong as they normally are.

Welcome to the crib,
also known as g+j's crab shack.
This is my roommate, Gwen.
We share the casa.
As you walk into the foyer,
what you'll see is our custom-made fireplace
with a stone border.
Can't buy that anywhere.
That's custom-made right there.
You'll notice our garage over here.
We've got firewood.
This is what every day is all about for us.
And then, of course, you know what this is.
Where absolutely no magic happens.
- [Laughs] - Including the magic of sleep.
But you know what? We make do.
It's nice and comfy.
We're layin' on the sand.
We got a little futon right there.
It suits us well.
[ Suspenseful music plays ]
You think that's the one that bit you?

He's still fightin'.

How do you know when they are done?
I don't know.
[ Blowing ] Narrator: With most of the meat
located in the head and abdomen,
a tarantula contains as much protein
as one slice of bacon.
- Got meat in it? - Yeah, it does, a little bit.
Definitely burnt.
[ Crunching ]
I thought it would taste more delicious
because I got to bite back,
but it really was pretty disgusting.
[ Laughs ]

Coming in here, on insertion, we learned that we need shoes.
The terrain is too hostile for bare feet,
so, we need to make some sandals.
Shoes and water.
Yep. I'm worried about extraction tomorrow
because it's gonna be in the middle of the day
and it's way too hot, so, we might be so exhausted
that we can't walk down to the end of the beach.
♪
Map?
Map.
Alright. We're here.
We need to be there.
Slick sharks.
Yeah, there's gonna be some bull sharks
in this water, so,
no way we can swim around those.
It's too dangerous. Looks like the best
course of action is gonna be havin'
to go over that ridge -yeah.
-And find this little beach and then looks like
we might have a little bit of a swim.
Swimming's gonna be a challenge because my arm
doesn't rotate over my head with the injury that I have.
We'll get there.
We will get there.

Narrator: To avoid predatory bull sharks that feed next to the shore,
Jon and Gwen will have to trek four miles,
up and over a 350-foot ridge, to reach their extraction beach,
with only a coconut shell of water each.
[ Suspenseful chords striking ]
Watch your toes. These things
will get snagged up in those bushes.
Yeah.
So we're getting started with the extraction
and we're immediately goin' uphill,
which is never a fun thing,
but we've got our sandals
and so we're just hopin' that this ridge
doesn't have too many false peaks
and doesn't keep playin' with us all the way up.
♪
Heat is definitely gettin' to me, so,
- yeah, for sure. - Get outta the sun, for sure.
Yeah, for sure.
♪
I'm too hot.
My heart's racin' pretty good right now.
Yeah, take your time.
Narrator: Dehydration causes the blood cells to contract
and retain more sodium,
which slows blood flow through the body.
Gwen's heart is now compensating by beating faster.

With that sun bearing down on us,
it's really kickin' our ass a little bit.
I'm worried about her and her dehydration.
Here, finish this.
I don't wanna take you water.
I'm fine, Gwen. I want you to finish this.
We don't know how much further we have in front of us.
I'm okay. There's not much left
in there, anyway.
It's really humid right now.
Jon just offered me his last bit of water.
You can see the buckets of sweat drippin' off me
and he deals a lot better in this humidity than I do.
[ Insects chirping ]

I like that it looks like we're close to the top.

The ascension should be soon upon us.

It's bittersweet, heading down,
to be honest with you, because
it's more dangerous, goin' down,
than it is goin' up.

I'm actually cramping up a little bit,

Now I'm concerned about my arm.

we're in this together.

Men have gotten soft, these days,
and I was startin' to become one of those men,
but I came out and, you know,
I definitely put my body to the test out here.
That tells me that,
anything put in front of me, I'm gonna hammer it.
I don't think that I could've been happier
with my partner for this challenge.
We've clicked so well.
Our survival skills mesh really well
and there's nothin' like it.
Nobody can ever take this from us.
Narrator: Jon lost a total of 26 pounds

good to be done with that.
Very glad to be done.
I chose to do this because, since my injury,
I needed to know for myself that I was capable
of completing an extreme challenge.
Havin' a partner was a critical element to survival here.
I'm really glad Jon was my partner.
My biggest takeaway from this experience is
I've learned I'm a badass.
[ Laughing ]
