Narrator: This is the north coast of honduras.
The densely packed lowland of the cangrejal river basin,
home to nocturnal predators such as the puma and jaguar.
But the area's greatest threat is the unpredictable weather.
With more than 118 inches of rain per year,
the rain forest is often drenched,
raising the already intense humidity to unbearable levels,
making it near impossible to start and maintain a fire.
Trade winds from the north
can reach speeds up to 27 miles per hour,
increasing the risk of hypothermia,
and sending temperatures plummeting
to a chilling 49 degrees at night.

rylie: Right off the bat, it's full of lush vegetation.
I think it's gonna be a definite challenge
looking out for any sort of dangerous animals
or loose footing or anything we might step on
because it is just absolutely dense.
My name is rylie parlett and I'm from southern maryland.
I love bushcraft and survivalism.
I've been practicing for years.
I have a lot of primitive skills
such as foraging, fire-making, shelter-building.
When it comes to survivalism,
I'm totally fine and comfortable being by myself.
I don't find that I need companionship to be happy.
I'm doing this challenge to prove
that all of this practice was for a reason,
that it can actually pay off in a survival situation.
Rylie has extensive primitive skills,
but she plays better alone than in a team,
and that could hinder her chances of survival.

and I'm an environmental scientist.
I like to think of myself as a survival expert.
From a young age,
hunting and tracking was part of my strengths.
The dangers in these areas are jaguars and pumas,
but back in south africa, we've got bigger problems.
We've got bigger cats. We've got bigger animals.
So this should be a breeze for me.

We've spent the past seven years,
every day together,
and it was her idea that I enter this challenge,
and I am doing this to prove it to my wife
that I can do this challenge.

Like, it's just really distracting.
You can do your best to avoid these things,
but you can't see everything,
and you can't see through all of the underbrush.
So this is not the safest environment.

It's easily excitable and has been known

I'm just, like surviving and eking along.

and I literally starved for this.

My game plan today is to cook snails.

It's probably the best way to go about it.
Narrator: To reach the extraction point,
rylie will have to trek through three miles of dense jungle.
Rylie: I'm trying to get out of here without being bitten by a snake.
Narrator: Along the way, avoiding hordes of snakes
uprooted from their dens due to torrential rainstorms,
among them is the eyelash viper, whose venom effects
the cardiovascular system immediately,
making one bite from this snake fatal.
She will have to swim in 48-degree water across the river
and climb one mile through thorny brush
to a road where her extraction vehicle awaits.
Rylie: Traversing these rocks without a lot of balance
is really strenuous.
I've lost physical strength
because I'm hungry and I'm tired.
I'm worn down.

It's incredibly painful
my feet are murdered.

I just finished 21 days in the jungles of honduras.
And I am just ecstatic.
I did it. I did it.
And no one can take that from me.
Narrator: Over the course of 21 days,
rylie lost a total of 20 pounds
and survived 11 days on her own,
raising her psr to 7.1.
Rylie: I got to a place in the challenge
where I was really frustrated and I started thinking,
"maybe this would be easier by myself
because I wouldn't have to compromise.
I wouldn't have to worry about someone else."
but as the challenge got more aggressive
and as I got weaker
and as it got a lot more isolated,
I realized that having a teammate
would have been amazing.
It would have been an awesome resource.
I'm not the same person that came into this jungle.
I'm someone much stronger.
And I now see the value of not being alone.
I really feel good about
the way I'm walking away from the challenge.
It's sort of unbelievable.
Like, it's really hard to believe that this is the end.
