Welcome back to presidential detail.
You and I get to work together.
- We've never done that. - How long do you plan to stay?
As long as she wants.
When Jack went undercover, we had to say goodbye to him.
Terry's office. Who's Terry?
My boyfriend who's moving in.
Logan Welling wasn't a history teacher.
Logan was an undercover CIA operative,
and I'm pretty sure his assignment was you.
Quiet. Quiet!
I don't want to hurt you.
Be quiet.
Box mac and cheese and a turkey burger.
That's your answer?
Well, you said my last meal, and I would
want my last meal to be...
The food of a fourth grader.
No, nostalgic, classic, my "Ratatouille" moment.
Let me guess, you're gonna say a six-course meal
at a Michelin restaurant you've never been to.
No, I was gonna say the grape hull pie at Duplin Winery.
I still dream about it.
OK, so my childhood's a no, but yours...
This pie is not nostalgic.
It's patriotic.
The scuppernong grape is the official
state fruit of North Carolina.
You can pick them along the coast every spring.
Logan, what were you doing in North Carolina?
I thought you were from Wisconsin.
We agreed we all like the face,
but he goes off my board.
Logan Welling's CIA file isn't just classified.
It's compartmented.
All the more reason to keep digging?
If we had any idea who had the clearance,
maybe we'd start.
He's off-limits.
Take him off the case board.
Take Logan's photo down.
Agent Wallace.
There's something I remembered.
Witness lists for the next 50 federal grand jury cases.
Please update their avails
now that the case schedule is shifting.
What's going on?
One of the jurors died last night,
Penelope Gonzalez.
How terrible.
All case presentations are on pause.
Is her death suspicious in any way?
Doesn't appear so.
Tripped on her vacuum and fell down the stairs.
Fairfax County PD wants to interview the jurors
to make sure there's nothing about Penny they don't know.
I'm gonna sit in, make sure they do it carefully.
We can't afford to have any more jurors quit.
Is there any chance I could join in the interviews, sir?
I've been dying to see more of the scope of this place.
Well, what about my list?
I don't have weekend plans.
- Hello? - 8:00 tomorrow night, right?
I finally fixed that shower door we broke.
I can't.
I have to work late. That's why I'm calling.
So come over late.
Agent Wallace mentioned that two other
federal agents were killed prior to Logan and Libby.
I want to know who they were.
Well, how are you gonna find that out?
If you request files,
it's gonna set off a bunch of red flags.
What if it's not us that requests them?
What do you want to see? It's not Jack.
It's someone who knew him, someone who's trying
to send us a message.
Well, maybe we're safer ignoring that message.
Jane? Jane, you still there?
I didn't want to tell you this on the phone.
Your boyfriend's files are completely walled off.
I've been ordered to drop it.
All the more reason to keep digging.
I said the same thing, but...
Ever since you told me this,
I have not been able to think about anything else.
I mean, this man dated me for six months.
I need to know if the entire time he was sleeping with me,
he was doing it because he wanted to,
not because he had to.
Clare...
Just look into coastal North Carolina
like I told you to.
He mentioned a... a winery near Wilmington
and visiting in the spring.
Clare, I mean it.
You have to let this one go, just for now at least.
You're the one who told me he was CIA.
You opened this door.
And now I'm telling you to close it.
Why, 'cause your boss told you to?
I wonder how he would feel if he found out
that you broke protocol and told
the victim's girlfriend this highly classified information.
Is that a threat?
Follow up on my leads.
I checked out the resort's floor plan.
- And? - You're right about Villa 3.
- The windows. - Less windows.
Plus the back patio has zero resort access.
It's practically Cliffside.
Your dad is making me draw diagrams
of the National Cathedral by hand.
I mean, if I had my tablet, it would take half the time.
Why is he making us do all this old-school stuff?
Because my dad is old-school's
most distinguished alum.
It's best to humor him.
By next week, he'll figure out how behind the times he is
and be forced to catch up while we are on an island
with Sparrow.
Outpost, verify the alarm.
Security breach in Eisenhower.
All personnel from outpost confirming the alarm.
Baker 4 reports unknown subject in basement.
Halting all elevator traffic.
Subject has moved to the southeast stairwell.
Headed to the stairwell now.
Locked.
Locked.
44 seconds.
It was just a drill.
I'd like to think of it as an opportunity,
one that took you 44 seconds.
Yeah, which is well within range.
And a world away from perfect.
If we had our tablets,
we could have skipped two of the steps.
When I started here, we couldn't rely on computers.
We had to rely on instinct and training.
Think about what might have happened
if Micah needed his tablet to identify that Class III
at the ice cream shop.
Cameras in densely populated areas
make it possible for agents to find a face
in a huge crowd, sir.
Unless a terrorist blows out a power grid or uses an EMP.
This week we get back to basics,
and we start with the fitness check
that no one here seems to have done in months.
You missed an elevator.
Mr. Cooper, the police have a few questions
about your experience on our jury thus far.
It's a big commitment to come in every month.
There must be some personalities in that room.
Is there anything you could tell us about Penny Gonzalez?
She's nice.
Regarding the dynamics of the group, she fit in well?
Sure.
You're going to have to use
more than one or two words here.
We come in.
We hear cases.
We vote to indict or not.
We go home.
I'm not here to make friends.
I'm here to serve.
I know nothing about these people.
You were in the Corps like me,
which is how I know you just did a threat assessment.
You clocked the security camera,
Detective Gerrity's firearm, the exit.
- Force of habit, I guess. - Sure.
But you've done it three times since you got here.
Has something happened recently to make you
concerned about your safety?
Someone broke into my house and tried to threaten me.
Well, what did he look like?
Big guy.
Not bigger than me, but big.
Wore a ski mask.
Offered me money to quit the jury.
Said he'd come back and do some real damage.
And yet you're here today.
For what I've done for this country,
there isn't a soul out there who can intimidate me.
- Thank you, Mr. Cooper. - We'll make sure you're safe.
Mr. Hollingsworth, that was way out of line.
Yes, but without him, what would we have found out?
We need to alert the USMS.
Jury intimidation is a federal crime.
You think Penny's death was a homicide after all?
Well, we're gonna get the FBI on that right now.
Thanks for bringing me in.
I was going stir-crazy for reasons
I'd rather not get into.
What do you know about federal grand juries?
I watched "The Good Wife."
Grand juries are selected like regular juries
but gather weekly over a full year.
They hear a multitude of cases, sometimes up to 20 a day.
Last night, one of our grand jurors was intimidated
and another died,
though we don't know for certain if they're related.
We can't reconvene the jury until that's settled,
which means a lot of angry prosecutors, plus my boss.
You know FBI agents take civics classes too, right?
Sorry. I watched "The X-Files."
I can be there in an hour.
Go lights and siren and make it 20.
None of you made time.
Not one.
Well, we don't usually do drills after breakfast.
You need to be prepared at any time,
whether you've eaten or not.
After you catch your breath, we will go again
and see if you could beat that time.
You know what I'm saying?
- You have 10 minutes. - We gotta get rid of this guy.
- Yeah, I agree. - What's going on?
Your dad's not making any friends,
and people want him gone.
Which people? You people?
I wouldn't mind less surprise cardio, but...
It's not just that or this analog thing.
He's affecting the way we actually work.
He's changing schedules. He's switching up partners.
He's tough, it's true, but he's not exactly wrong.
We all like your dad.
We know how much of a titan he was.
But times change, and his methods haven't.
Sequoia's team told me they want him gone by tomorrow.
Out? How?
They're gonna find a way.
And you can either join us or not.
I have one dead juror and one who's been shaken down,
and you're telling me this isn't a murder investigation?
Not yet. The ME report shows.
Penny Gonzalez had a sprained ankle
as well as a broken neck.
It's highly likely she tripped.
Running from the same intruder
who tried to intimidate Mr. Cooper.
That's exactly what we're trying to figure out.
It's my job to keep my jurors safe.
Of course, but we're starting to think
there's something larger at play,
and we need time to figure out what it is.
In the past few months, four jurors requested
to be dismissed for personal reasons.
You granted those dismissals.
They had legitimate reasons.
If Ms. Gonzalez and Mr. Cooper had also quit,
that would have depleted the jury from 23 to 17.
We think someone's trying to dismiss the entire jury
for a reason we don't yet know.
If someone's going to harm the jury,
then I'm inclined to release them for their safety.
But then we'd be giving in to intimidation,
and we'd never know who's behind this.
The jury doesn't reconvene until Monday, right?
You can keep them the safest if you sequester them in a hotel.
Give us the weekend to get to the bottom of this.
If you guys can't figure it out by Monday,
I'm letting them go.
You have 72 hours.
Take care.
- Thanks so much. - Thank you.
I'm always here if you need me.
I know that I shouldn't say this,
but thank you for sharing there.
If you had told me last year I'd attend group at my church,
I would have laughed in your face.
- It's Sarah, right? I'm... - David.
Yeah, you're new. Last week?
Yeah, I just moved.
Well, I'm sure you need to get going.
You must have patients to see.
It's not like it's urgent.
Teeth.
Oh, I'm in teeth too.
Well, I... I was back in Indiana.
Lab tech.
Oh, office manager.
I mostly wear these for comfort.
Well, comfort is key, especially when
you're on your feet all day.
I mean, not to mention
having just lost your father on top of it.
Looking for work by any chance?
You looking for workers?
Not gonna lie, my boss isn't crazy about our current tech.
He's on thin ice.
Oh, this is so kind of you.
It's like we say in there,
it's important to help each other.
Close the door.
I've been talking to some agents,
and they have some pretty valid objections
about the way you're changing things up.
I don't know how your previous boss
ran this place but...
I understand there are changes to be made.
I know that you want what's best for us,
but you're not gonna get it like this.
- Agents are... - Upset?
Almost mutinous.
It must have been hard for you to come to me
with this, Junior, and I appreciate you
bringing it to my attention.
You can let your buddies know the old guy can take a hint.
Can I get back to work now?
- Yeah. - Yeah?
Jury service started January 1st.
On March 15th, a juror asked to be excused
due to a cancer diagnosis,
another on March 30th for long COVID.
A third's job relocated them on April 3rd,
and a fourth had to provide in-home care
for an elderly parent on May 1st.
Can you get these four's contact info?
We need to reach out and see
if anyone talked to them before they left.
I'll get it from the grand jury coordinator.
Who else has their info?
A handful of court employees.
It's kept very private. Why?
Well, our unknown suspect knew where Penny and Joe lived.
If they know who our jurors are and their addresses,
we need to find out how they got them.
Hi, if this is about the grand jury,
the USMS is in the process of securing a motel for them.
They'll be moved in a matter of hours.
It's related, but...
Hey, Mom, I'm on this, too.
Oh, you guys are working together.
That's so wonderful.
We need you to look into who could be leaking
the contact info of jury members,
maybe someone from the court system
that your marshals oversee.
I'll put someone on it.
Bye, kids.
You think I didn't spot your tail a half a mile ago?
What do you want?
I need a new pair of sneakers.
Heard they have a great discount.
I'm going to work now. Goodbye.
Whatever you said to Clare this morning,
she was very upset when she came back inside.
She just lost her boyfriend.
Don't you think she's been through enough?
I think we both know your daughter can handle herself.
That's not for you to decide.
- I want to help you. - You can't.
Until there's an arrest,
you're a part of this investigation,
and you know that.
Now, if you'll excuse me.
From now on, if you have questions,
you come to me first.
I'm gonna need you to go.
You don't have clearance to be here.
Detective Norris.
Yes, Detective.
I'm looking for a POI who spent time
in or around Wilmington,
potentially in the spring of last year
or the year before.
His photo's in your inbox now.
I'm sure this is a total long shot,
- but I had to take the cha... - I'll be damned.
Jason Marks.
He's been missing since March of last year.
Just got off a Zoom with Alyssa Shinji.
She admitted she accepted a bribe,
pretended to have a long COVID relapse
and got herself dismissed.
The person who offered the bribe?
A man with a wolf tattoo and a ski mask.
Fake cancer, fake hospice, fake relocation,
- and fake COVID. - Yep.
And now we know the price, 25K for each
from tattoo guy, intimidation for those
who couldn't be bought.
These jurors were in fear for their lives.
We need to get footage from all the LPRs, CCTVs, and door cams
from around our ex-jurors' addresses.
That's gonna take, like, a hundred subpoenas.
My boss is gonna need to clone himself 10 times.
- Yeah, you do subpoenas. - I'll handle the warrants.
- All right. - I don't know.
- I'll keep this brief. - It's come to my attention
that there have been complaints about my methods.
I get it.
I dropped in without asking how you like to do things.
So to make things clearer, I reviewed tapes
of your past extractions, and you all surprised me.
You are in worse shape than I realized.
Agents partnering by preference.
Unapproved shorthand on comms.
And, of course, your tablets.
So now we're going to run a lockdown drill to test
team communication, the results of which will go
in your permanent files.
The scenario?
An active shooter outside the building.
The drill starts now.
And Junior, a good shift leader wears
the detail's mistakes as their own.
So starting tomorrow, you're relinquishing the role.
How does shift agent sound?
Let's get him transferred back to HQ.
I know just how to do it.
Penny didn't have a cam, but half her neighbors did.
Look, there's tattoo guy entering her house.
Then Penny a half an hour later.
The guy leaves less than a minute after.
That tattoo, that buy us anything?
Bet we can find him in the NCIC.
Max, freeze!
- [yelps] - FBI!
Max Petrov, you are under arrest
for the murder of Penny Gonzalez.
All this experience and a BA from Notre Dame.
Why the move?
A bad breakup.
It's good to start fresh.
Though I did love my practice in South Bend.
We ran a tight ship.
Made same-day crowns, was in charge
of all the cosmetic veneer cases.
I checked all the lab work before it was delivered.
Well, that sounds perfect.
I mean, how fortunate are we
that Sarah happened to bump into you today?
I tell you, sir, it's like it was meant to be.
You thought getting me called in for a fitness evaluation
would get me kicked back to HQ, didn't you?
I'm sorry, Dad.
Don't take it out on anybody else but me.
It was my idea.
And the consequences are yours as well.
You're suspended for two weeks without pay,
and we'll see where you end up when you're back.
The grand jury coordinator is waiting for you
in the conference room.
Does Terry's assistant still have a thing for you?
Adam? Oh, yeah.
Very intense with the eye contact.
I kind of like it, though.
Sometimes at lunch, I let him stare at me
while I house a turkey club.
Terry's on the Committee for Governmental Affairs.
I need access to crime reports on two federal agents
who were recently killed.
But I can't ask officially, and I don't want to put Terry
in a compromising position.
So you want me to use Adam's interest in me
to get you what you need without anything pointing back
to you or your boyfriend.
- Is that awful? - My kind of awful.
I'm so on it, it's gonna get me pregnant.
Bribing federal jurors, breaking and entering,
intimidation, and murder.
If you want to walk out of prison without a cane,
I'd talk.
Why'd you kill Penny Gonzalez?
Her neck was snapped, Max.
We have you fleeing the crime scene at the time of her death.
Do you want to play this easy or hard?
I was only there to offer her money.
She tripped over her vacuum.
Money for what?
The guy who hired me said, "Tell her to quit jury duty."
I didn't know she'd freak.
Most of the others took the money.
Who hired you?
- The name. - Don't have it.
I get a phone call from an unknown number
and a list of names and addresses in my PO box.
Cash in the box when it's done.
When was this phone call?
He moved up the deadline last week.
Said to finish the job at the end of the next or else.
And I know what the "or else" meant.
You know what moving up the deadline means, right?
Whatever case the suspect didn't want the jury to hear
must have been on the docket soon.
That narrows down our pool of cases
from the 103 remaining in the year to the 20 next up.
Researching 20 cases over a weekend is totally doable.
We have to solve this before the jurors are released,
or the trail will go cold and we'll lose any chance
of catching whoever's behind this.
Mom's with the jury coordinator now.
This is a juror sign-in sheet that you prepared.
Can you read the name that appears here?
William Hammer.
William Hammer also appears on a list
given to the man suspected
in the death of fellow juror Penny Gonzalez.
Mr. Hammer's legal name is Willem, no "I."
It's only misspelled in these two places.
Do you understand what this means?
I don't know that man.
I've never seen him before in my life.
And yet he got these names from you.
Paula Meyers, you are under arrest for obstruction.
No, I don't know why my roommate
wanted that information.
I thought she was taking an interest in my job.
We made it like a game, quizzing me to see
if I knew everyone's names.
Who is your roommate?
Noelle Flores.
But she would never hurt anyone.
Noelle may not be a killer,
but she knowingly gave protected information
to a dangerous person.
Now, this is very important, Paula.
Did you tell Noelle where the jurors
were being sequestered today?
Someone tried to set a fire at the motel,
but the marshals caught it
before the jurors were in any real danger.
This case just keeps on growing, which proves
- how much we have to keep on it. - We are so close to finding...
My office doing everything we can...
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
But I can't in good conscience keep these jurors
impaneled any longer.
I have to do what's best for their safety.
If you do, whoever's behind this will never be caught.
This person wants the jury dismissed.
Don't let them win.
I can't risk it.
I'm discharging them from their duties immediately.
Mr. Bowling, I'll tell the clerk's office
to summon a whole new jury for next month.
We played right into what the suspect wanted.
The jury got dismissed, and we still don't know
who's doing this.
With no jury, the USMS has no way in to work this case.
- The FBI, on the other hand... - Russ.
Sorry, Clare, you're on your own.
We're not done.
You may not be, but you heard my boss.
This isn't a DOJ issue right now.
I need to go back to my actual job
before I get actual fired.
They're getting away with it.
People get away with things all the time, Clare.
Yeah, and it's our job not to let them.
Is this about this case or Logan?
Yes.
Someone out there is getting away with that, too,
and I can't do anything about it.
But I can do something about this.
They tried to kill the jurors in the motel.
That means whoever we're looking for
knows we're looking, and the only way to stop them
is to find the upcoming cases
they didn't want this jury to hear.
So can you get me all the case files or not?
I know. I'm late.
Or am I early?
Don't we have a reservation in 30 minutes?
- Are you... - We did.
I got pulled onto a case all afternoon.
- You... - Come in.
All right, so then dinner is...
In the oven.
I have got a mountain of paperwork to get through.
How do we feel about a night in?
Well...
Oh, you're here.
What happened to date night?
You're joining it in progress.
What is all that?
The rest of my evening.
Don't worry.
I'll be totally out of your hair.
Just quiet as a mouse.
Think of it as a dress rehearsal, Senator.
You wanna grab a drink with your favorite brother?
Dad's ruining my life,
and I need to forget he exists.
I can't. I'm underwater on a case,
but I could really use a hand.
You wanna come help your favorite sister?
Well, the gossip on the Hill is,
there's a certain senator
who got his assistant to access some files
he had no business looking into,
and they may censure him.
Everyone's money is on... guess who... Putnam.
That'd be fine by me.
Madam Marshal?
- Senator. - Marsha.
Didn't expect you here.
The extra paperwork I asked for.
You can put that right in the kitchen.
The extra paperwork?
Wow, your assistant's coming by on a Saturday with more work.
It must be important.
Darling, you know I can't talk about my work.
Hey, Mom, quick question about my cases.
- I... - I can't.
I'm doing dinner.
We have a reservation at Shia that we're not gonna use.
Why don't you go...
Oh, Marsha, thank God, someone who can help.
- Oh, I really should... - It'll take two seconds.
Madam Marshal, Senator.
Just a second.
We have zero leads.
Everyone the suspect hired never met them.
All we know is, they're a highly intelligent person
with underworld connections trying to prevent a case
from being heard by this jury.
The only crumb I can think to follow
is to find the upcoming case
that they didn't want the jury to hear.
You're only looking at upcoming cases?
Well, we figure if the in timid at or was
told to hurry up, that means the case
was gonna be heard soon.
But if the jury started in January and it's May,
why'd the muscle start in March?
Maybe that's when the perp's case was heard.
Then why intimidate after the fact?
Maybe it wasn't about a case the jury was going to hear
but a case they already heard.
No. No, no, no.
They would have moved it to trial
or just dismissed it altogether.
I don't know. Maybe there's two cases.
But don't listen to little old me.
My wind-down shows are more "Love Island,"
less "Law & Order."
Nice new walls.
I didn't think Terry was a spring.
The jury could have heard something before March 15th
that would have been a problem for an upcoming case.
Maybe there's a link between two cases
that somebody doesn't want found.
Give me that.
Marsha, are you here?
Adam.
Oh, God.
Something wrong at the office?
No, no. Nothing's wrong...
We're dating.
I called him about the Shia reservation.
That happened five minutes ago.
Thank you for coming so quickly.
Yeah.
I told you to wait in the car.
Yes, I know, like a dog.
But then I saw that you dropped this.
Young people,
the reservation's in about 15 minutes, so...
I just... I have to help Clare finish.
Well...
I'm gonna do that too.
Russ, you're here. And with...
- Natasha. - OK.
My girlfriend.
It's so nice to finally meet you.
Well, it's nice to know you.
We were on our way to dinner when my office called.
Someone checked out five months' worth
of grand jury files in my name.
- In the study. - Thanks.
What a lovely home.
We said...
We said we weren't going to...
Micah?
What's up, bro? I just snuck in.
Grab a file.
We don't have all night.
A subpoena would have taken till Monday.
You know that makes this illegal, right?
Yeah, so is asking me to get Kate McIntosh
to make you a fake ID when you were 16,
and that didn't stop you.
Sit down.
Really great chicken, Mrs. Hollingsworth.
Thank you, but it's not chicken.
It's duck.
My favorite.
What are you doing here?
I came to check on Clare.
Hello, Terry.
Always nice to see you, Mike.
And this is Natasha, Russ's girlfriend.
Hi.
There's something connecting two separate cases
that's worth murdering two people.
Moving to week after next, we have federal narcotics
and firearms charges against Frank Costa.
Hey, Dad.
Witnesses include FBI agent Greg Semler
and Detective Anna Shaw.
I have FBI agent Greg Semler here testifying
on another drug case on February 4th.
I've got another firearms violation
that was supposed to be presented next week.
- Names? - Accused is Uri Volkov.
Witnesses are FBI agent Mike Park,
Agent Roberta Kelleher, Dmitri Vasilenko...
Some families play board games.
That's my girlfriend, Natasha.
And I'm from a family of lawyers.
I'm in.
Give me all the paperwork you got.
So many names.
Dishes on me.
Did you invite him?
No, but we need all the help we can get.
Watch out or he'll take over.
- Why would I do that? - This is Clare's operation.
All right, listen, we have a Carl Allen, a Lillian Mah,
and a rep from Ting LLC.
Wait, I know that name.
March 9th, Eric Ting, accused co-conspirator
in a money laundering scheme.
Money laundering?
This case is about real estate fraud.
Maybe they're the same guy.
Wouldn't the DOJ have caught that?
Not really.
Cases are handled by different departments.
Only the grand jury would have heard the name
mentioned twice, but they could point it out
to the DOJ.
Ting LLC, proud donors of the Eastwood Observatory.
Look, here's a photo.
Yeah, second from the left.
Eric Ting.
He must have been afraid the DOJ would start
an investigation about a link between the two cases.
- Yep. - I wonder what it could be.
- Did you find it? - I think so.
Hey.
Oh, that's great. Congratulations.
So what did you find out?
Oh, I see.
So I am the sucker senator that everyone's gossiping about.
Is that right?
My watermark is on this photo.
Well, well.
It's Bowling.
He says only the judge can order us
to look through these cases, not even the FBI.
And if anyone finds out we did, he could get fired.
Yes, sir. I apologize.
It was a rookie mistake.
Everything will be done by the book from here on out.
I appreciate you.
"I appreciate you"?
You weren't supposed to have the files,
and I wasn't authorized to give them to you.
I should be grateful to still have a job.
I love how kind and good you are,
but sometimes I wish
you wouldn't always follow protocol.
Someone in this family has to.
You're all always doing whatever you need to
to get the job done, bending the rules.
Somebody has to toe the line, do the correct thing,
not the right thing.
Is that why you joined the Marines?
I always wanted to know. I never quite understood it.
I wanted structure,
like Jack talked about with the navy.
He liked rules and clean lines.
And I do too.
You know, there is so much I feel I don't know about you.
But one thing I do know is, you're the best of us.
And I really shouldn't try to change that.
What are you doing?
The right thing.
I had to make an example of someone.
People need to fall in line.
But why is it your line?
I'm the boss.
A job you got two weeks ago only because they were told
they had to keep you on, not a job you got
because you earned it.
I've had it before.
Times have changed.
The way that we protect people has changed.
I saw you in the study with Clare.
Where did that Dad go?
Or can you only collaborate when it's with somebody else
and not me?
Don't make an example. Lead by example.
Do you know who I learned that from?
My dad.
Let me know if you see him.
I'm only here 'cause I'm shy of my 10,000 steps.
Since the jury's been dismissed,
neither one of you
has any jurisdiction over grand jury cases.
Well, the FBI and the DOJ don't.
But a senator who sits
on the Senate Judiciary Committee does.
I cannot believe I'm doing this for you.
That's why I like you so much.
In February, the DOJ presented a case
involving an Eric Ting to the grand jury.
Ting is a money broker used as a go-between
for drug cartels and wealthy Chinese businessmen.
He uses a scheme called flying money
where funds are virtually untraceable.
I remember this case, but hasn't it already moved
to the prosecution phase?
Yes.
And next week, another seemingly unrelated
real estate fraud case is being presented.
That case also mentions Mr. Ting.
It is our belief that this huge real estate conglomerate
might be using flying money to bankroll their builds.
If that's the case, Chinese nationals are buying up
American real estate with cartel money,
and nobody knows about it.
So this Eric Ting must have thought that by forcing
a new jury to be called, nobody would make
the connection, but y'all did.
It makes the U.S. a haven for illegal foreign money
and puts more drugs on our streets.
And now that we have a name, it shouldn't be hard
to connect it to the payments made
for the bribes and then to the arson.
I'll sign a subpoena right away
to bring in and question Eric Ting.
Have a good night, Judge.
You're leaving? I thought...
I did that for you 'cause it felt right.
But what you did today did not.
Why didn't you come to me?
Instead of sending your assistant through my assistant,
why didn't you feel comfortable asking me for help?
Would you have gotten those files
without asking me why I wanted them?
I'm not asking you why you wanted them now, am I?
Janie...
If you decide how I'm going to react,
you give me no chance to prove otherwise.
You don't.
I want a partner who gives me the benefit of the doubt
like you give your family,
like you give your... your ex-husband.
You let me know if and when you feel you can do that.
All right?
I'm sorry about Terry.
It's just a pause, not forever.
I'm also relieved, to be honest.
We have a lot going on right now, all of us.
That we do.
Can I ask you something?
You and Dad seem on good terms.
You kind of always have.
How do you do that?
Like, hold on to the good parts of your past with him
while also knowing it didn't work out?
Learning to hold two contradictory things
is one of the most necessary skills in life.
If you can master that, you can master anything.
I don't know if I ever will.
Well, like with your case, when you first looked at it,
it didn't make sense, and it not making sense
was the key to putting it together.
Your dad and I were like that.
The death of your brother
broke us.
But it also keeps us together.
I hope you can find that sort of peace with Logan.
I do too.
2 minutes and 32 seconds.
- What? - I looked it up.
It's a new PPD record for the "run the man" drill.
Freshly set, thanks to you.
Hey, you were right.
I couldn't see straight.
I was too busy trying to prove to the Service
that they made the right choice putting me back on PPD.
Why? You're a legend around here.
A legend is something you become
when your time is over.
I wanted to prove I'm as valuable now as I was then.
Then prove it by listening.
Nobody wants just to be told.
They want to be heard too.
All right.
Let me show you what I can do.
- I'll follow your example. - You're a great leader.
All right, let's see if you can catch up, then.
Updated witness availabilities,
- by Monday morning as promised. - How did you...
I disobeyed orders, but the result
is a high-profile case that's a huge win for this department.
I've more than earned my way out of my probation period.
Probation's over, but you still disobeyed me.
Don't do it again.
So I guess now isn't the time to ask for an office
that's not in the kitchen?
Don't ask me how, but I got the crime scene photos.
Jack's cranes were at Libby and Logan's crime scenes.
The DEA agent prior, no crane.
But it's at the first one, the ATF agent in Tacoma.
I don't know if anyone noticed since I removed them
from the ones that I was at.
Well, it's not a pattern until it's a pattern.
Are you considering telling anyone?
If they find out I took two cranes, I'll lose my job.
It's evidence tampering.
Whoever this is knew Jack.
I can feel it.
Are they trying to tell us something
about how or why he died?
Oh, someone's here.
I gotta go.
Jason Marks.
Is that Logan's real name?
No. Another cover.
He was posing as a history teacher
in Wilmington last spring.
So he'd done this before.
It's not the only pattern.
He was in a relationship too.
Ghosted her when his work was done, I guess.
So I was just a part of the job?
God, it felt so real.
He used to walk an extra two blocks
to get the kind of coffee I liked.
I mean, when I would fall asleep working at the couch,
I always woke up with a blanket over me.
The only truth is the one you can live with.
Maybe it was both.
He was doing a job, and he really loved you.
Once we know what the job is, you'll know for sure.
Agent Wallace.
Here again.
We were just having a nice chat, weren't we?
Yes, we were.
Can I get you something?
I could swear I've seen one of those around recently.
Oh, that?
One of the kid's friends left that
after a sleepover ages ago.
Do you need to talk to me about something?
Anything else for the, Secret Service suggestion box?
- Good day? - Oh, yes.
Don't stay too late.
I just want to make sure that everything's
- ready for tomorrow. - All right.
