I'm trying to build up my boma with one hand,
and there's leopard activity in the area,
and they're superpredators.

going back to that situation.

from that dead nyala that I found?
I'm gonna walk back and get backstrap.
-What do you think? -No.
-No. Definitely not. -I'm gonna work on the boma.
I got to stay and work on the shelter. I'm not gonna risk it.
Um... Kaila: Gary found a dead nyala,
and I absolutely do not want to eat that meat,
because I looked at it, and it smells like death.
And right now my number-one concern out here is shelter.
There's a lot of work to do before we can think about eating something.
Gary: I'm in a race right now against a leopard.
Me and a leopard are fighting for that meat right now.
Yes, you are.
I mean, if you guys don't want to eat it, I'll go eat it.
-Where's a pulaski? -Over by your spear.
To pass up that nyala? Assuming you're gonna get a kill?
That's not smart.
My behavior is in the realm of a real
"you're never going to eat again" survival situation.

Exactly. I'm not gonna assume
the meat's gonna be around tomorrow,

I spent the majority of the challenge with no food.
14 days without eating, again, is gonna do me in.
Absolutely.
We're racing against a leopard right now.
Battling a leopard for the meat.
Gary: That's right.

And I can tell it's a fresh kill.
You know, it has a smell, but...
It's not rancid. That's for sure.
Sarah: There's that smell.
As soon as you pushed on the abdomen,
I guess it released some fumes from inside.
It's a dirty job, and Gary's got to do it.

There's leopards around,
so having a secure boma is important.

not to harvest meat.

I grew up on the poor side of town,
so I'm used to eating weeks-old meat.
I mean, if it doesn't smell rancid
and it doesn't have, like, a gooey texture to it,

Not being hunted by an animal that we took its food from.

I don't mind scavenging a little bit from a leopard,

Shane: Unfortunately, I don't have the ability
to build a boma in three hours.

Trent: So it's up to us to get this boma secure.
We'll probably just have a bonfire
and sleeping around it tonight.
We're just gonna have to keep our fire high.

I am in the middle of a nightmare in Africa.

I badly need food.
The reward would be the ability to continue with the challenge.
The risk would be
possibly debilitating rancid-meat disease.

Narrator: But the effects of isolation began to take their toll.
When you're out here long enough, you really get
to the point of lacking some friendship.

Took 24 days to find my naked family.
I'll tell you what. I am very happy I made the move.
I would've traveled 50 miles more to find them.
It's an epic day right now.
Sarah: You look like you've been more successful
than all of us put together.
I'm on a 100% meat diet.
Gary: Matt seems like a strong team member.
Even I respect Matt.
But I feel like we were kind of kicking butt already.

Trent: We don't have enough firewood for one night.
We just want to build, and we haven't had a chance to really look around yet.

and everything else that I had to do for the last 24 days
to voices everywhere, commotion everywhere.

And he brought with him lots and lots of jerky.
It's like breathing life into a dying group.

I realized how hard it is to do it solo.

But Gary has a very smelly section of meat
just sitting 70 meters from the camp.
You know, there's concern.
We're in predator-rich environment right here.
This is an area that leopards would love.

It's been here all day, but it was bright, red,
and fresh when I cut it off today.
Matt: There are some indications you can see in its mouth.
And the head itself, because it is so close to all that,
it's all the bacteria of the mouth.

But, I mean, I've got enough meat
that you guys don't have to eat it.

and you might die of starvation, eat it.
If you are not dying of starvation,
it is actually a worse strategy,
because now you could give yourself
a giant spectrum of foodborne illness.

Shane: Gary's first challenge, he ate poisonous fruit.
Apparently he has not learned his lesson.

They taste basically like eating pine-sol.

Shane: This is punishing work.
I'm not sure what Gary's agenda is,
but rubbing it in all of our faces every day
that eating some meat that's days old,
just to make a point, is kind of frustrating.
Personally, I think he might be a little jealous,
because he thought he was gonna be the savior of the team.
Hopefully he's done with his little agenda
and we can move on in trying to survive the next 12 days.

The marrow will last longer than everything else
because it's trapped in the bone.

A big part of me likes being underappreciated.

you can end up in a situation, a survival situation,
where you might have to eat maggots one day.

is 'cause none of us are at that state.
You could've spent that much time getting fresh meat.
Haven't you guys been spending time trying to get fresh meat?
