Two weeks into the 40-day African challenge,

the all-female team of Melissa, kaila, and Lindsey

have struggled to secure a secondary source of protein.

Aah! No, nothing.

It's frustrating.

Meanwhile... -It's an eel. -It's an eel.

-Oh, yeah! Whoo! -Whoo-hoo!

Narrator: After an early success,

the fate of the newly merged team began to turn

as Melanie's sun poisoning became debilitating.

Melanie: I can't. I can't go anymore, man.

It [bleep] hurts.

[ Crying ] [Bleep]

Narrator: And resources disappeared...

It's dirt, rocks, thorns, and dead.

Narrator: ...Leading to harsh criticism from Lacey.

Lacey: You're not really helping.

Get up and stop being a liability.

Sarah: Got my trusty, dusty shovel.

Both of my original teammates gone.

Lacey -- she was mean to Melanie.

She told her she was a burden,

and I really didn't appreciate that.

Right before we go, everybody take another drink,

and then we'll dump 'em.

Let me by so I can hydrate, then.

Mel was weighing us down.

It's dangerous to have someone on your team

that's not actually helping.

I came out here for redemption,

and nobody's gonna take that from me.

Let's look at this freakin' map so we can go.

Narrator: The search for more resources

will lead the survivalists

through six miles of sun-scorched African scrubland,

claimed by lions, hyenas, and leopards.

Lacey: All right, guys. Whoo!

Okay, then. Get on the road.

Trek on.

Gary: We're leaving here a good, strong boma

to venture out into the African wilderness.

This is a journey where things want to kill you.

Leopards, the lions, and the hyenas don't play.

And man is actually on the menu.

[ Growls ]

Narrator: Five miles away, at noja cliffs,

Lindsey, kaila, and Melissa have found a short-term solution

to their shrinking catfish supply.

[ Birds cawing ]

Kaila: You guys digging for clams?

Yeah, if we just get clams,

we don't even need to get catfish today.

Yeah, and it's good to vary up our sources of protein.

Lindsey: Here we've been eating a whole lot of catfish,

but they're getting a lot harder to fish,

and the numbers are dropping.

And so we need to be serious about rationing the fish.

Thankfully, we have a backup food source.

We are gonna get clams.

Woman: I see bubbles coming up.

That's -- yeah, that's where they are.

Melissa: That's a big one stuck in the ground.

Whoa, look at this guy.

[ Chuckling ] Nice.

Kaila: I'm just catching rocks.

I think we're clammed out for now.

Yeah!

Oh, my gosh.

Whoa.

That's good.

I love clams, but they're really low in calories, actually.

Hart the African freshwater clams

provide approximately 15 calories each --

about the same as a single cracker.

To make it to 40 days, the survivalists will have to hunt

for more significant sources of protein.

You know, with all the suck that is out here,

we have a lot of fun, as well.

We found a trio of females out here.

I'm a little worried.

I don't really get along that well with females,

but I don't know, we'll see.

We just came from the other side of Africa.

-A long way. -We took quite a trek, yeah.

Do you guys want to warm up by the fire,

sit down, relax a little bit?

Trent: We have not been eating.

We really have not been eating very much.

We have catfish that are, like, this big.

Wow.

Are the resources sustainable enough for eight now?

I mean, I would say there's probably

still about 20 catfish in there.

We've been rationing them

and going and getting like one a day.

We've been getting one every other day.

We have clams, too, in that swim hole, too.

-Really? -Yes.

-You guys got clams in there? -Yeah.

There's probably not that many now, but we had some.

I think it's gonna be so good to just have new life

and new people and new adventures.

But it gets a little nerve-racking thinking

that there is still a limited amount of fish

still in the catfish pond.

If we go and we eat 'em all in two days,

well, this area -- this land that we have

is not gonna be good for any longer.

And we still have a long way to go.

We have, like, two male lions stalking us.

-Really? -They've already killed people.

Well, we need to get a shelter, don't we?

Yeah.

I'm in favor of making one big one for all of us.

I mean, we're here together. We're working together.

We're gonna work as a team together.

Sarah: It's nice to see three new faces,

I know I'm not alone.

We've got eight people out here, but I still feel lonely.

Melissa: We're renovating club boma.

It feels so nice to have other people helping do this.

It's a lot easier to do this with, like, six,

seven people than it is three.

Trent: Yeah, strength in numbers, right?

I know, right?

Lacey: Where'd Sarah go?

I haven't seen Sarah since we got here.

Has anyone seen Sarah?

Sarah: There's the ravine, and there's the valley.

There's everybody hard at work.

She's being very selfish.

We share everything with her.

The least she could do is use what little energy

her skinny little Boyd has and help us.

In a survival situation,

you gotta bring something to the table,

Lindsey: Are you guys hungry?

Do we want to -- a couple of us want to go try

and get some couple catfish?

I could eat.

Melissa: Four bows.

We'll aim, fire, and hopefully, we'll get two or three.

Even if we just get three, you know, they're good-sized.

Lacey: Is that it? Yeah.

Holy [bleep], look at that.

Catfish for days!

We've been rationing them.

When we get within, I don't know,

to that first palm, we probably don't want to talk.

The most important thing about these catfish

is just doing a really slow approach to the fishing hole,

because if you make footsteps that are too loud,

it'll vibrate the ground, and the catfish will go right under.

And I'm, like, "good, because the one rule of club boma

is that we all joke with no trouble."

Vacation's over. Time to get back to work, kids.

Sarah: As it stands,

that boma does not look safe from lions,

so the fire is crucial out here to protect us from predators.

Lacey: I'm gonna make the fire bigger.

Melissa: You all right?

Lindsey: She just stood up and fell in the fire.

[Bleep]

Lindsey: We had an accident.

Lacey fell, and her hand went into the hot embers.

[ Sobbing ]

Gary: Medic!

Oh, [bleep]

Oh, sweetie. Oh, my goodness, yeah.

The medics are here, okay?

I'm right here.

My hand hurts so bad, I want to cut it off.

That's the kind of thing that'll take you out of the challenge.

Every nerve on my hand is throbbing right now.

[ Yells ] Sorry.

Because of the blistering,

it can be classified as a second-degree burn.

Lacey sustained a significant burn and blisters to her hand.

So, we are gonna keep Lacey in bush camp

for the evening and monitor her progress.

Sarah: [ Sighing ] Oh.

Lacey's gonna go to bush camp tonight.

It looked pretty bad. Yeah.

There were a lot of blisters.

Gary: Don't get me wrong.

I'm not saying that I'm glad that she got burned.

I'm saying, Karma nipped her.

If she comes back, I don't know how she's gonna respond.

She's not gonna like being injured and debilitated,

so it'll be interesting to see how she handles that.

Trent: She's in a tough space, mentally.

I guarantee you.

I just hate that it's some kind of a freak accident, you know?

The boma is the safe spot. You're sitting here.

The next thing you know, your hand's burnt.

You're seeing a medic, possible tap-out,

just in an instant.

It's crazy how fast things can change around here.

and if her wound has got worse overnight,

as much firewood to help keep warm.

so that we won't all be soaking wet.

That's one thing that can take us out.

Today, anyways.

We are all a little bit on edge

because of the horrible, torrential rainstorms

that we experienced earlier in the challenge.

However, this time, we have a shelter

with a good amount of rain protection on the roof,

and we're preparing our coal bed.

Digging a hole and packing it with hot coals.

Come on, baby.

We really hope that a nice, warm coal bed

will be enough to keep the eight of us warm.

Definitely felt raindrops.

Lacey: I'm kind of worried.

I'm supposed to keep this super dry, so... ♪♪

Narrator: After several hours, the hot coals are covered

with three inches of dirt

and should provide warmth well into the night.

the survivalists have identified two bodies of water

over seven miles away --

an arduous journey that will take them

deep into leopard country.

Me and Shane will take up the rear

so no predators come in from behind.

Definitely, they're gonna track us from behind.

Sarah: This will be my fourth move at this point.

That doesn't make it any easier.

It's scary. It's arduous.

It's dangerous.

There are lions, leopards, hyenas

that pose a very serious threat out here.

an area that has rich in resources.

Not necessarily just in food,

but in building materials so that we can build shelter.

to the abandoned camp at shosho ravine,

where the only signs of life come out at night.

I am hearing a lot of leopards.

They are intimidating sounding.

I am out here, completely alone.

This place is full of danger,

and I would love to have some people to look out for me.

So today, I'm hoping to find my "xl" family,

because 21 days solo is a long time.

on this rock regularly.

This is a ghost town is what this is.

This is a little town, a little village, abandoned.

When you're out here long enough,

you really get to the point of lacking

that camaraderie that comes between friends.

Just some skulls to keep me company.

Being out here in complete solitude,

it's starting to get to me.

Absolute longest part,

when you're alone out here, it's the nights.

And it's cold.

And the wind is making the fire

burn through a hellacious amount of firewood.

but we all, as survivalists, knew what we had to do.

And we took a step out of the drama

and into our new location.

And, uh, here we are.

So, hopefully, this will help unite us again as a team.

We can probably be neighbors, but we could never be a family.

and she does not grasp

the totality of the danger of this environment.

This is Africa, and out here, on your own, you will die.
