It was a rundown bed-and-breakfast
just south of Miami.

There was something else going on in that house.
(Frank) I told myself I was freaking myself out.
- [screams] - Who's there?

I could smell this terrible burning flesh smell.

to leave that door unlocked.
I was alone and terrified.
(woman) Oh, my--Help!
(Ellen) It wasn't my imagination.
Part of me wanted to run out of there that night
and never come back.
[faint whispers]
[foreboding music]

Guys are calling you Bullseye down at the station.
Plenty of cops have been shot more than once.
(Frank) I was 30 years old,
less than two years on the Miami-Dade police force...
Actually, no, Frank. Not really.
And I had already taken my second bullet
in the line of duty.
That's when my boss gave me the bad news.

I called my ex-partner Mike,
and he was there in less than half an hour.
Our forensics team
came to remove the body the next morning,
but they had no idea how long the guy had been dead...
I bet finding a dead body
is the best thing that happened to you in months.
(Frank) Or how he got into the bathtub.

I don't need this getting out in the open
right before I open up.
It's just another dead body.

I wanted to pretend it was the light,
the angle,

digging into the history of the property.
There's no evidence of a woman dying in the bathtub,
but what's really crazy
is that there have been seven suicides there.
Seven.
All of them were men.
I have no way of knowing, but if I had to take a guess,
I'd say a woman was murdered in room seven in 1952,
by a man,
and no one ever found out.
And whoever she is,
she's still there getting her revenge.
A lot of people doubt my story,
but I got the tape to prove it.

When the school offered me a job
teaching a summer writing class, I took it.
And I requested to live in the Beta house

The administration at the school
called the whole thing a sorority prank
to avoid bad press.

on the history of the sorority.

I looked through every yearbook between 1990 and 1997,
and finally, I found something interesting.
"Gathering to celebrate the life of a lost sister.
"A sophomore majoring in political science
"was found dead in her room
the afternoon of Saturday, March 5th."
The article in the yearbook
said she died by overdosing on diet pills,
but that didn't explain anything
about what happened on June 1st of that year.
[man screaming]

And that crazy dream,

and the house.
You know, with what happened there.

Well, it's the oldest building near campus by a good stretch.
In fact, it used to be the only house in the whole neighborhood.
It was one big piece of land.
Thousands of acres.
It's amazing how things change.
He didn't give me much more information than that.
It actually seemed like he was trying to dodge the subject
every time I brought it up,
just like the university administration.

At first I thought it was just another dream,

I looked at all the footage.
The cameras didn't catch anything.
I spent the entire next day poring over
every book I could find about the campus' history,
and then I found something.
No one can live in campus housing
after the school year ends, usually the end of May,
without permission.
In 1997, the year of the attack,
there was construction on campus
that delayed the start of the school year.
Everything pushed out two weeks,
which meant the school year didn't end until mid-June.
And that meant that 1997 was the only year
anyone had actually been in the sorority house
as late as June 1st.
I would be the first person to be in the house on June 1st
since the attack in 1997.
To be honest, I was alone and terrified.
But I was determined to stay awake
and get some sort of explanation.
[unsettling music]

Almost two hours had passed,
and again, I had no idea what happened.

are about the devil, but they're not.

(man) Thomas killed and tortured
a lot of slaves in that basement.
Even burned one alive.
On June 1, 1857, a group of slaves
dragged Thomas down to his little chamber of horror,
and they cut that devil into slivers
with some kitchen knives.
[gasps]
[screaming]
The knives didn't kill him, so they had to hang him.
(Ellen) When he told me the story about Thomas,
everything started to match up with what I'd been experiencing.
He burned a slave alive...
[screaming]
[screams]
(Ellen) The torture chamber in the basement...
Help!
[screams]
(Ellen) And then finally he was hanged himself.
It was all him,
this plantation owner's son
coming back to terrorize the place on the same night
he was killed there.
[mysterious music]

I went back that same day
and wrote down everything I learned about that house.
I sent a letter to the school board
and to every woman attacked on that night.
No surprise, the school never responded.
I heard back from most of the girls
who were attacked that night.
Some were freaked out.
A few begged me to just drop it.
But most were grateful
that someone believed it wasn't just a prank
and took the time to find the truth.
I guess I felt I had to.
I couldn't go the rest of my life not knowing
what happened that night.
I was one of those 17 girls,
and I couldn't rest until I proved it was real.
