After a rough divorce, I needed a change.

[tires squealing]

[woman cries] - I warned you!

(Brooke) It looked like a bloody thumbprint.

[woman gasps, birds caw]

[woman screams]

I had no idea what was going on.

(Brooke) I was starting to freak out.

[woman gasps]

I was scared for my life.

[woman screams]

(Brooke) I just remember thinking...

[screams]

This thing was going to kill me.

[faint whispers]

[insects chirping]

[woman speaking indistinctly on TV]

When I finished pharmacy school back in New York,

I looked everywhere for a job.

I'm originally from Minnesota.

And after four years in Manhattan,

I saw myself living in a big city like that.

But I got offered a huge position

at a research hospital that I couldn't turn down.

[cell phone beeping]

And, of course, it was in rural Oregon.

Hey, it's Kristen. Leave me a message.

[beep]

Hey, Kristen. It's Brooke.

Just calling to say hi

and let you know that I miss you.

You're probably out doing something fun.

[sighs]

Not even two months into living there,

and I was bored out of my mind.

But I knew it was a great career move,

so I was willing to stick it out.

[tires squealing]

[sighs]

My house was at the end of this long road.

Kind of perfect for drag racing or speeding.

I figured it was just some teenagers messing around,

and I went back to sleep.

Yeah, definitely. Can't have it all.

So do you have any interest in grabbing a drink somewhere?

Tom and I are taking my boys to the movies tonight.

- We'll do it another time. - All right.

I know. This place must be pretty quiet

compared to New York.

My co-worker, Lara,

had been encouraging me to go see her psychic

ever since I told her

I hadn't met any new guys in Oregon.

[insects chirping]

I'd only been there a couple of months.

But I had to admit, it was really lonely.

[tires squealing]

[suspenseful music]

♪ ♪

Same exact time,

two nights in a row.

[clears throat]

[ghostly whispering]

[ghostly snarling] - [gasps]

I was sure I felt another person's hand

when I went to turn on that light.

I had a roommate all throughout college

and pharmacy school.

I told myself I was just jumpy,

living alone for the first time.

But I think, deep down, I knew it was more than that.

[ghostly whisper]

[lawn mower engine stops]

It looked like someone was staring at me from my window.

[lawn mower engine starts]

But I knew I was alone.

I figured it was my eyes playing tricks on me,

and I tried to focus on something else for a while.

[sighs]

[indistinct chatter on TV]

[tires squealing]

[engine revving]

1:13...

again.

[ghostly screaming]

[breathing heavily]

It looked like a bloody thumbprint.

With everything that had happened

over the last few days, I had no idea what was going on,

and I was starting to freak out.

I spent the next day out--

shopping, gardening, reading on my porch.

I realized I was basically doing anything I could

to avoid being inside the house.

[suspenseful music]

♪ ♪

[sighs]

[gasps]

[sighs]

I'm sorry. [chuckles]

- You said 9:30, right? - Yeah. Yeah.

- Come on in. - [laughs]

Thanks for picking everything up.

- Yeah, sure. - Come on in.

I asked Lara to come over for a girls' night.

I knew eventually I had to go back in there.

At least this way, I wouldn't have to do it alone.

(Lara) So have you met anybody?

- No. - [chuckles]

Not even close.

[tires squealing] - [gasps]

Crap.

[sighs] That scared--

[gasps]

[engine revving]

I'm going out there.

What? No. Let's call the police.

You can call the police if you want.

I'm not gonna let some teenager mess with you.

[engine roaring] - Hey!

We called the police, you hear?

Lara, maybe we should just go back inside.

[engine revs, tires squeal]

(Brooke) Lara was completely freaked out.

Obviously, so was I.

We had just seen a car vanish into thin air

right in front of both of us.

I mean, we both couldn't be making that up.

[woman speaking indistinctly on TV]

So she made me swear that I would call her psychic friend.

I'd never believed in that kind of thing.

But I couldn't deny what we'd seen that night.

[sighs]

[TV clicks off]

[groans softly]

[gasps]

Mm.

I couldn't figure out how it got there.

I thought maybe Lara had broken a wine glass

without telling me.

[grunts]

[insects chirping]

[ominous music]

♪ ♪

[creaking]

[gasping]

I thought it was an earthquake,

but nothing else had fallen.

If I hadn't moved when I did,

that bookshelf could have killed me.

[breathing heavily, gasps]

[faint moaning]

Hello?

[continues breathing heavily]

[moaning]

[gasps, screams]

[tires squealing]

[ghostly snarling] - [gasps]

[creaking]

[gasping]

[thermometer beeping]

(Brooke) I was sure I was hallucinating,

but my temperature was normal, and, physically, I felt fine.

I didn't know what was going on.

But I definitely wasn't going back into my bedroom.

[engine revving]

[gasps, breathing heavily]

I couldn't be alone in that house anymore.

I drove straight to Lara's

and told her everything that happened.

Of course, she believed me and let me spend the night.

[sighs] I don't know what's going on.

I feel like I'm going crazy.

The next morning, she offered to help me do some research

on my neighborhood, see if anything weird popped up.

Oh, I'm so stupid.

What?

[gasps] I remember this story.

What?

These--these kids, they got drunk at this party,

and they didn't invite some kids 'cause of--I don't know--

some love triangle or something.

Lara read that this local teenager was jealous

of his ex's new boyfriend.

She cheated with the new guy

and had broken up with him just a few days before.

Well, this one boy-- he gets drunk.

He drives his truck right through the front of the house.

Hey, that's my house.

Four people died-- the driver, the passenger.

One person was crushed when a wall collapsed on them.

[sighs]

The driver's ex-girlfriend was the one who was crushed

under the wall.

I couldn't believe it.

It was almost exactly what I had seen at my house.

We called Lara's psychic, Selma, and asked her to come over

that same night.

(Selma) Spirits do hide sometimes,

like kids playing hide-and-seek.

But here in this home...

they're not hiding.

Who are they?

One is an angry young man.

He's here,

locked in a perpetual state of anger.

[breathing heavily]

She's the other one.

He's still angry about what she did to him.

They don't know they're dead.

We relit the candles right away,

and Selma tried communicating with the spirits.

But she said she couldn't get through to them.

So she decided to come back with her supplies

the next night to cleanse the house.

Hey, Selma, just one more thing--

Um, can a spirit...

Can he hurt me?

Listen, he's really angry,

and he has no idea where he is.

She? Now, she's scared.

But she's just as trapped.

Unfortunately, you're caught in between both of them.

I wondered if the boy thought I was her--

his ex-girlfriend.

If what Selma said was true,

that they didn't know they were dead,

maybe he was still seeking his revenge

by taking it out on me.

We're gonna do everything we can to protect you.

This is your home now.

It'll be okay.

I really wanted to believe Selma.

But with everything I'd experienced in that house,

I just wasn't sure that I would be okay.

[engine revving]

(Lara) Hey! This is private property!

You need get the hell out of here!

[engine revs, tires squeal]

[creaking]

[Brooke gasping]

(Selma) One is an angry young man.

She's the other one.

He's still angry about what she did to him.

They don't know they're dead.

[man speaking indistinctly on TV]

(Brooke) I didn't want to sleep another night in that house

until it was cleansed.

[inhales sharply]

But I couldn't stay awake,

so I got up to make myself some coffee.

I blew out every single candle after Selma left.

I don't know your name.

But...

I am not the person you are angry at.

This is my house now.

[tires squealing] - [gasps]

(Brooke) He was terrifying.

His eyes looked like some type of animal.

[whimpering]

[tires squealing, crash]

[gasping]

[screams] No! No!

The next thing I remember was feeling this insane weight

on top of me...

Help!

Somebody help!

(Brooke) And not being able to move.

Help me!

[sobbing]

[hyperventilating]

[screams]

After that, I blacked out,

but before I did, I just remember thinking

that this thing was going to kill me.

[creak]

[door opens]

[gasps]

Selma.

Brooke, honey, we're gonna get you out, okay?

(Brooke) Selma called 911.

The fireman had no idea how I got myself trapped

underneath a 300-pound bookshelf.

I didn't feel like trying to explain what happened...

mainly because I didn't know myself.

Selma did a cleansing ceremony that same day.

She said it wouldn't be an overnight thing

and that I needed to give it some time.

But I didn't care.

I was out.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to me

if Selma hadn't come back that next day.

I wonder if I would have died there.

Everything I thought I believed or didn't believe

changed when I moved into that house.

Spirits, ghosts, apparitions,

whatever you want to call them,

they're real,

and I hope you never have to find out the way that I did.

(Sam) I never knew I'd end up in my 40s

moving back to my hometown and starting over.

But there I was, back in Goodwell, Oklahoma.

Uncle Pete!

You done some growing since last I saw you.

Thanks for letting me stay.

You're kin, boy. What'd you expect?

(Sam) I just moved back to Goodwell from Oklahoma City.

And I was looking for work as a long-haul trucker.

- How's the old farm doing? - [chuckles]

How come nobody asks me how I'm doing?

(Sam) The place had been in decline

since the Dust Bowl in the 1930s.

But I had been out of work for a while.

And after a rough divorce, I needed a change.

So I thought I'd try my luck back home.

Well, old farm been producing anything, Unc?

Nah, place is pretty much shut down now.

You know, 1,000 acres

is an awful lot for a guy my age to have to manage.

Yeah, yeah.

Of course, I got my son, Landry. He helps every now and then.

- [laughing] - That works out all right,

I guess.

So, what, you got your whole life in these bags, boy?

Just about. Lost everything else in the divorce.

I heard about that. I'm sorry.

Well, hopefully I won't be here too long,

find my own place, you know.

(Sam) My Uncle Pete was letting me stay

at one of the old worker houses on his farm

until I got my own place.

[door creaks]

I knew it'd be in crappy shape, but, whew,

it was way worse than I had imagined.

[insects chirping]

(man) How could you do that to me, Enid?

[birds cawing]

even when we were kids, he freaked me out.

He was a weirdo,

and he was always pulling these creepy pranks.

Even as an adult, there was still something about him

that seemed a little off.

[owl hooting]

[gasps]

(Sam) When I was ten years old,

my schoolmates and I caught Landry

with a bunch of dead birds in his book bag.

That's how weird the guy was.

And since I wasn't gonna be there a long time,

I didn't want to feed into the crazy.

[air pump whirring]

After a few nights in a sleeping bag

on a cold, hard floor, my back was killing me.

So I got an air mattress,

decided to get a little more comfortable.

of seeing me get all worked up over it like I did as kid.

After almost a week with no job prospects,

I was getting bored.

I was doing anything to keep myself busy,

even cleaning the place up.

[grunts]

[sighs]

[distant creak, crash]

[woman coughs]

(Sam) That was something I couldn't blame on Landry.

But I was exhausted from a lousy night's sleep.

I kind of figured

it was just my eyes playing tricks on me.

(Landry) What are you doing with those?

Well, hello, Landry. How are you today?

I don't go in for that kind of thing.

[chuckling] Yeah, I don't either, Landry.

(Sam) That night, I was itching to get away from the farm

and just be around some normal people.

I ran into this girl I knew from high school at a bar.

I invited her over after closing time.

I got beer and...

more of the same kind of beer.

- Guess I'll have a beer, then. - Good choice.

Yeah, sorry. Just moved in.

So how's this compare to your side of town?

It's a little more rustic.

Yeah, well, it's, uh, temporary, so cheers.

and I made up my mind to leave in the morning.

I just had to make it through one more night,

and I was out of there.

I got up early the next morning and packed up my stuff.

I was just getting ready to find my uncle to thank him...

(Sam) And tell him I was hitting the road.

Wallet?

[sighs]

- Aah! - [retching]

Jeez!

(Sam) At that point,

I had to tell Uncle Pete what had been going on.

[suspenseful music]

[clicks tongue] Well, I guess you ain't as crazy

as I thought, son.

(Sam) After we got rid of the handcuffs,

Uncle Pete pulled me aside.

He said he had something important to tell me...

in private.

[exhales sharply] Did I ever tell you

about your great-great-uncle Walt?

No.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. He was a crazy son of a bitch.

- Alcoholic, abusive. - Right.

[chuckles] We disowned him. He's a real character.

You know, back in the Depression, he--

he married a much younger girl named Enid.

So he brings her on back to the farm, right?

Right.

Come on. Come on.

(Pete) And he sees the way the ranch hands are looking at her.

They work for me! Do that to me Enid!

He get's all jealous and possessive of her.

Plus, you know what he did?

He shaved her head.

That pretty blonde-- You think it's only yours.

[cackling]

Thinking nobody would notice her if he did that.

Idiot.

(Sam) I think I already knew what it was

I was seeing in that house.

But hearing my uncle tell that story,

there was no way I could deny it anymore.

I saw Enid in that house. I saw a ghost.

Then came the Dust Bowl. You know about that Dust Bowl.

Yeah.

Well, Walt--he had to leave town on business,

so what did he do with Enid?

[echoing] I warned you about this, Enid.

I warned you!

He chained her to the radiator in the house.

But before he left, he left the window open

and all that dust came pouring in.

[coughing violently]

- About the time he came back... - That's crazy.

- She was dead. - She was dead?

Yeah, suffocated on all that dust.

And ever since then...

she just won't leave us alone.

(Sam) Turns out,

Landry had been talking about seeing Enid for years...

You shouldn't be in there.

Ever since he was a little boy.

My Uncle Pete never really believed him.

He always thought he was just being Landry

and talking crazy...

till I saw her too.
