Five days with Howard Hawks,
the man who between 1926 and 1970 shot 40 films
and was one of the best directors in American cinema.
He shot westerns like Red River and Rio Bravo,
comedies like Bringing Up Baby and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,
adventures like To Have and Have Not and Hatari!,
dark gangster and crime films such as Scarface and The Big Sleep.
He contributed masterpieces to almost every genre of classic Hollywood cinema.
He led actors like John Wayne, Gary Cooper and Cary Grant
to the high points of their careers.

On any Sunday, the 81-year-old drives three hours through the desert
to the auto races at Willow Springs
to watch his son, Greg, practice.
In the 1920s, Hawks himself drove in races.
The Hawks films The Crowd Roars and Red Line 7000 deal with auto racing.
The Crowd Roars was made in 1932 with James Cagney in the lead role.

FRIENDSHIP
In 1941, Hawks shot the war film Sergeant York with Gary Cooper.
It was the story of a pacifist farmer who becomes a celebrated soldier.
Jesse Lasky, the producer of the film, was an old friend of the director.

Hawks made three films with Gary Cooper.

Hawks learned to fly in 1917 as a soldier.
A flight with his friend Howard Hughes.
On the theme of flying, Hawks made The Air Circus, The Dawn Patrol,
Ceiling Zero, Only Angels Have Wings
and, finally, in 1943, Air Force, the story of a B-17 crew in the Pacific.
WOMEN
With Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Hawks shot two films.
Lauren Bacall was discovered by Hawks.
Together with Bogart, she made To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep.
THE STORYTELLER
The glamorous Carole Lombard had her first hit in 1934 with Hawks directing.
Carole Lombard and John Barrymore in Twentieth Century.
ACTORS
In Red River, John Wayne plays the rancher, Tom Dunson.
With his favorite actor, Cary Grant,
Hawks filmed several comedies including Bringing Up Baby,
His Girl Friday, I Was a Male War Bride and Monkey Business.
In Hawks's legendary gangster film Scarface from 1930,
George Raft plays a small-time gangster.
