We are in the historic town of Pendleton, Oregon,

for this special two-part episode.

We will investigate dark hauntings

in the Pendleton Underground.

There are reports of unexplored subterranean tunnels

snaking their way beneath the city.

Some say the tunnels went for miles,

gave cover for despicable behavior

and are full of ghosts.

Before we start our investigation,

we heard it's very important that we visit City Hall

because the mayor wants to meet with us first.

Now, we heard there's some hauntings

associated with the underground here

and some of the other abandoned structures.

Well, I know that you're gonna investigate some of these rumors,

and I'd certainly be delighted to find out

if there's anything to 'em and so would our local folks.

We are going to conduct a very thorough investigation,

and we are going to find out exactly what is going on here.

The mayor calls them rumors.

And he's not the only one.

But there are multiple reports of hauntings here,

and by now we've learned

where there's smoke, there's fire.

There are things in this world

that we will never fully understand.

[echoes] Understand.

We want answers.

We have worked years to build our credibility,

our reputation.

Working alongside the most renowned professionals in the field,

capturing groundbreaking proof of the paranormal.

-[man] It's working! -[man 2] Whoa.

I can't give you an explanation.

[Zak] This is our evidence.

Our ghost adventures.

We will begin by immersing ourselves

in the history that feeds the dark energy in Pendleton.

Aaron and I are walking the Oregon Trail,

a path of westward migration from Missouri to Oregon,

often called the world's longest graveyard.

The trail is estimated to have claimed the lives of more than 65,000 travelers.

Jay and Billy are taking a helicopter

a 100 miles east of Pendleton to Hell's Canyon,

where as many as 34 Chinese immigrants

were massacred by White settlers in 1887.

Jay and Billy are making this trip

because we have been told that just this kind of violent oppression

drove Chinese immigrants in Pendleton

to build and inhabit the underground world

we will be investigating.

But as Aaron and I navigate the Oregon Trail,

we have lost connection with the guys

and with our SUV.

What are you doing?

-I'm trying to call Jay and Billy. -Oh.

Where are they?

[Aaron] I don't know.

[Zak] Jay and Billy touch down in Hell's Canyon

and hike to the site of the massacre

where they pay our respects to the murdered men

by performing a Buddhist prayer ceremony.

May they have no suffering or worries,

but rather receive only happiness.

[Zak] No one was ever punished

for the Hell's Canyon Massacre.

An injustice that demonstrates

the fierce anti-Chinese sentiment at the time.

It is said that the Chinese people in Pendleton

attempted to escape that violent discrimination

by creating their own civilization,

including a laundry, a meat market and a jail.

Aaron and I are so lost,

we feel like we're disconnecting from reality

and the strain is showing.

But we came in a parking lot over here,

and there was a gas station about a mile up.

We hiked to the river, we can't find our car.

Our car.

Well, I can give you boys a lift.

There's a door right there.

[Zak] As we approach the wagon,

we discover we won't be riding alone.

-[thuds] -[Zak] Ooh.

[Aaron laughs]

[Zak] Is your friend friendly here?

[woman] Sometimes.

Uh, how long you been a reenactor for?

What?

You guys are like...

These are all, like, reenactment of the Oregon Trail?

You guys are reenactors?

What is you talking about?

So, how long is it gonna take to get to Pendleton?

You ask a lot of questions. [scoffs]

You do ask a lot of questions.

[Zak] This is all too surreal and a little scary.

So, we asked to get off the wagon train ASAP.

That's good, thank you very much.

That guy looked like he wanted to kill us.

[Aaron] You think?

That was weird.

Well, only 'cause of your damn freaking costume.

[Zak] That trip through another dimension

somehow leads us to our rental car.

Hey, look!

And we make it to Pendleton in time

to meet with Billy and Jay.

As we walked the downtown area,

I decided to conduct an unplanned interview

to see how the locals view the underground.

Well, there is a lot of deaths that happen down here.

-[Zak] A lot of deaths? -Yes.

Cowboys used to go,

they would just shoot the, the Chinese.

Did you just say the cowboys used to shoot the Chinese?

-Oh, yeah, they would... Yeah. He'll-- -[Zak] Where?

Just for being out during the daylight.

Just in the street in the middle of the road.

Would they kill 'em in the underground?

Oh, yeah. Yeah.

There's a story of the, one incident where, like,

there was a jail down in the underground for the Chinese people

where they jailed their own criminals.

And there was a group of criminals in jail.

And a bunch of drunk cowboys one night went down there

and just shot into the jail cell.

Do you think that's true?

-I do, yeah. -You do?

-And you've heard that a lot through the town? -Yes, I have.

How much of the underground is here in Pendleton?

I mean, it comprises of most of the city...

-[Zak] The whole city? -...from downtown out.

-Really? But it just goes everywhere? -[Elyse] Yeah.

I don't think that even, like, city officials have access to all of it, really.

Like, it's not all opened up.

Is it true a lot of people don't like to talk about it?

[Elyse] We don't talk about it, yeah.

-[Zak] Why? -Kinda shameful, I don't know.

Why is it so concealed?

-Um... -Because of what happened down there?

Probably 'cause it makes us look bad.

We're here to preserve their lives...

And these guys went and visited that site,

and that is how we wanted

to start off our investigation here in Pendleton.

We are resolved to honor the unrested spirits.

And after this unexpected testimony,

we are even more resolved to unearth the darkness

infecting Pendleton.

[Zak] Night falls and we encounter Meghan Montee,

who conducts tours of the only section

of the underground that is open to the public.

[Meghan] Would you like to go see around the corner?

[Zak] Meghan tells us she was mysteriously paralyzed

and possibly possessed

at a former brothel called The Cozy Rooms.

When we do these citywide investigations

where we stay here for a week,

we don't have a lot of stuff planned,

and that's the beauty of it.

We get here in the town,

we immerse ourselves with the locals,

and then they tip us off to places,

locations and the stories

that we were unable to dig up.

So, we just found out about above the underground

where we're investigating,

-there's a, a hotel or the what? -[Meghan] The Cozy Rooms?

The Cozy Rooms.

And The Cozy Rooms is still original to the brothel.

-And this is above the underground. -And this...

-Yeah. -Directly above it.

-Yes. -Really?

Let's go. Let's go there.

So, now, what we thought was,

we were gonna stay just below ground for this entire investigation,

we just got a lead now that used to be a brothel.

There's nobody in it.

So, we're gonna go there right now,

open the door,

and walk inside of that building to investigate.

The brothel operated here from 1928 to 1953

when it was forced to relocate

by a crusading Presbyterian minister.

After that, the building was bricked up

and sealed off for over 30 years.

As a tour guide, Meghan has access and lets us in.

When it was closed in 1960, the door was bricked up.

And so everything in here, except for the furniture,

the walls, the floors and everything is original too

and it closed...

This was completely sealed?

Yes.

And they discovered it once they...

Early '90s, they took it off

-when they opened all of this out. -Wow.

[Zak] As we enter,

we see that nothing has been renovated.

And it feels as if this long sealed building

wants to remain back in time.

There is a strong feeling

that those who lived and worked here are still here,

and that something is protecting this space.

[muffled] So, we are directly over the underground right now,

in a old brothel, old original brothel.

-This is all original. -[Billy] Wow, this is nuts.

[Zak] There's nothing in here

that reminds me of the day and age we're living in right now.

-[Billy] No. -[Zak] And you can feel it as you walk through here.

[Billy] Oh, yeah.

-[Zak] These spirits, these people, they're here. -[Billy shudders]

[Zak] Are you okay?

[Billy] Oh, this just got a huge spike

right as I was feeling that chill.

[Meghan] So, these are the rooms that they would work out of.

[Zak] So, they would sit in the windows here?

[Meghan] They'd sit in the windows or in their rooms.

[Zak] You can almost just see them.

The veil is so thin up here.

[distorted voice whispering]

[Meghan] So, this is the kitchen.

[Aaron] This has a different vibe from the whole building.

[Zak] Tell us what happened to you in here.

[Meghan] So, we were sitting here.

I was actually sitting in this chair just like this.

And I just started feeling I was shaking,

that I felt like I was here, but not.

It was just, the room was closing in.

Then all of a sudden, I just, tears started streaming down

and it felt like someone or energy,

something went through my chest

and my side at the same time.

[Zak] And it happened to you right here?

[Meghan] Yeah, right where I'm sitting.

And then I tried to get up. They said, "Let's go,"

and all I remember saying is, "I can't."

The top half could move fine,

but I had nothing, no feeling down.

I could not get up.

-It took few seconds... -[Zak] Was it, like, a medical thing?

Or did you feel this was like an attack?

[Meghan] Oh, no, it was not medical.

It was, like, almost like they didn't want me to leave or something.

-But it was not-- -[Zak] Do you mind if we do an ITC?

-Experiment with you there? -That's fine.

[Zak] I placed the polterpod

on the table in front of Meghan.

For this experiment,

we will fan out to different rooms

in hopes of flushing out the spirits

and moving them toward Meghan in the kitchen.

It doesn't take long to work.

That's what it said, yeah.

[Zak] We move to different rooms

as the device continues to register voices.

And this is my friend Billy.

[Zak] Did you hear,

-it's the same guy that's been talking in it. -[Billy] Yeah. Yeah.

[Zak] I can hear that from here, and I'm shaking.

What is in the underground beneath our feet?

[distorted voice speaking]

Still there, yeah, hello.

[Zak] It's the same guy.

[man 3] This is the same voice.

-[Zak] The same voice. -[Billy] Same voice.

[Zak] Lauren begins hearing breathing sounds

coming from down the hall where no one is located.

What are you hearing, Lauren?

[Lauren] There's, like,

rustling and breathing as you were talking

and it's responding like, it's coming alive.

And then I hear heavy breathing down there.

-[Zak] Down here? -[Lauren] Yeah.

[Zak] Billy and I confirm that there is no one

anywhere near that part of the building.

Come here.

As we have all separated,

something incredible is happening with the ITC device.

All of us. All of us. Rocco...

-[distorted voice speaking] -[Zak] Are you hearing that?

Yeah, I'm hearing it.

[Zak] How many voices are you hearing coming through?

I hear the one guy.

[Zak] One guy, how many times?

I've heard at least five or six times.

[Zak] The same guy, right?

-The same voice. -[Rocco] Yeah, yeah.

[Zak] The same voice!

-[Jay] I don't know. -[distorted female voice] They're everywhere.

[Jay] "They're everywhere."

That was the first female though.

[Billy] That was female, yeah.

-[Jay] I don't know. -[distorted female voice] They're everywhere.

[Zak] After hearing a female voice for the first time,

I return to the kitchen to check on Meghan,

and something truly disturbing happens.

That's incredible.

The same guy has been coming through.

[Meghan] Yeah, there's a female too.

-[Zak] Well... Just heard her. -[Jay] We just heard her, yeah.

-[Zak] Whoa. -[Billy] Wow.

Dude, I just have this, like,

No, no offense. I, I--

The energy here is insane.

I just have this, like, I just wanna grab her neck.

Wow, this place.

I'm glad you brought us up here.

[Billy] Yeah, this [bleep] unbelievable.

[Zak] I asked Meghan to put her hands on the ITC device

to see if that will elicit a more intimate response.

Ladies and gentlemen, the afterlife is real.

This crude insult is an intelligent and very aggressive

direct response to my question.

In all the excitement,

I don't wanna forget that this might be traumatic for Meghan.

I feel a little high and a little nauseous.

[Zak] Jay reminds me of the inexplicable violent impulse I just had.

What did you say you wanted to do?

[Zak] I just have this, like, I just wanna grab her neck.

Look at this side of her neck.

-Isn't it really red? -[Aaron] Oh, my God.

[Zak] As you can see on the camera

that has been rolling on Meghan the entire time,

she never once touched her neck.

-[Billy] You have a red... Oh. -[Zak] It's literally burnt.

[Zak] That is really, really, really bad, Meghan.

It goes up into her ear.

-[Jay] Yeah. -[Billy] Oh, wow.

-Almost, like, someone was, like, strangling her. -[Jay] Right. Exactly.

This is incredible.

After I was compelled by a dark energy

to strangle Meghan,

a hand shaped red mark appears on her neck.

-'Cause I said that I felt like doing that... -Right.

-...and it, and it manifested. -Yeah.

[Zak] I need to seriously ask if you are okay right now.

[Zak] We escort Meghan down to the street

and send her home.

Then we stop to take in the significance

of what we've just experienced.

I mean, there's just so much stuff that happened here in history.

Energy can't be destroyed.

Our Pendleton two-part investigation

is kicking off to one hell of a start.

and before we begin lockdown,

we sit down with Meghan at another former brothel,

the Working Girls Hotel,

to review the incredible evidence we captured

during our preliminary investigation of the Cozy Rooms.

[Zak] How are you from last night?

Um, pretty good.

I had a little bit of a migraine this morning,

and just tired from energy drain.

As a paranormal investigator, I'll speak for Billy too,

this was truly remarkable.

-Oh, yeah. -[Zak] Okay.

Before we begin this evidence analysis,

um, we do these frequently on our investigations.

But this analysis is very different.

-It really is. -[Billy] Very.

Um, when you were sitting there,

we heard and you heard a man come through.

-And towards the end, a lady showed up. -[Meghan] Mmm-hmm.

You just so happened to be front and center

and the target,

of what I would say is one of the most remarkable

ITC sessions that we have ever had.

And not only that,

but it led to a physical event.

-Yes. -[Zak] And that's why we're gonna jump into this.

This is the first response that comes through.

I heard this in the moment,

and knew exactly what he was saying.

[Billy] We were in the hall and heard it.

What would a guy go... say in the brothel?

I heard that right in the moment.

So, is he talking about one of the workers?

I don't know. "Little butt."

You know, we're just theorizing here.

We're just trying to make sense of the responses that are there,

which they're clearly there.

So, through this process, if there's something we can't make out,

we're not going to just try to find out what it says.

We're still gonna play this because it's important

for everybody to see that the same man

and only this man

is talking for 30 minutes.

-Oh, yes. -[Zak] Okay.

-It's the same guy. Okay. -Yes.

Did you ever, for this 30 minutes,

did you ever hear any radio interference,

any music, any stations,

any interference like that?

-[Billy] There wasn't any. -No.

[Zak] We captured this male voice multiple times.

But some of the captures are not as easy to decipher.

We will play them now to demonstrate

the sheer volume of voices we captured.

Go ahead.

I think that sometimes when spirits try to speak,

their phonemes are there.

Their voice is there.

But they're transmitting from the other dimension,

and our devices are receiving.

And I think sometimes going from the transmitter

to the receiver from two different dimensions,

I think sometimes it can bend and move the...

the... the dialect around, you know?

-Yeah. Maybe it changes it a little bit. -Right.

This is where everything changed, and the female came through.

-I hear "we're hurt" at the end of it. -[Meghan] Yeah.

So, then you become aware there's a female.

-And now you're aware the female's there with you. -[Billy] Right.

And so you're telling us...

There's a female, too.

-[Zak] I just heard her. -[Billy] We just heard her. Yeah.

-"Come on back." -"Come on back" or,

-"Come on down" or-- -What do you hear?

'Come on back."

[Billy] And, like, she's cut off.

You know, is she trying to tell you

to come on back with them, back in their rooms...

-Right. -[Zak]...because the guy is coming there?

It's like, when I'm listening to these, I don't just hear the voices.

Like, when I was there, I, like,

felt like I could see things, you know?

Like, I could see it clear in my brain.

There's a guy up there. There's a girl up there.

-[Billy] Mm-hmm. -A lady.

And she was saying, "Come on back,

-like, hurry up." -"Come on back," and that was it with her.

-Yep. -And then that's when you said, "I have this--"

And then-- then we came in.

And I feel like we brought that male energy with us,

and that male came back.

And for that moment, I got real weird,

aggressive thoughts to you,

and I just wanted to take my hand,

-and I had to say it out loud. -[Meghan] Yep.

[Zak] I just wanted to grab you by the neck.

And little did we all know that about, what, 10 minutes later...

there's a... look like a handprint around your neck

with the thumb going up the side of your neck,

and this...

-[Billy] It was unbelievable. -[Meghan] Yeah.

-[Zak] And it was-- -[Billy] And then that's when you asked

-what's her name -[Zak] And what's her name.

Do you know her name?

I mean, it's clear.

I... I don't know. Did they say that back then?

Is this another thing where it came

from that other dimension, and he was saying "bitch,"

-but in that transmission, it went "biatch," you know. -"Biatch?"

Like, what do you make of that whole kind of situation

that I've kind of visualized based upon the audio?

-I think it's pretty much what I felt. -[Zak] Mm-hmm.

Did you feel a presence around you?

-Yes. -You did?

Not just around me, but my body reacted.

Um, some of the times, I didn't hear everything

that he was saying in the moment,

-um, 'cause I wasn't really there. -[Zak] There.

-[Billy] Yeah, you felt like the conduit for... -[Meghan] Oh, yeah.

-...the communication, it was using you. -Yes.

Okay, Jay, Aaron and myself are getting ready

to start the first section of the underground right now.

We have not been in this section yet.

I mean, it's massive.

But in here, I'm being told,

this is where the meat market is.

Some of the living areas were, old restaurants and stuff

for... for everybody that was

living in the underground, was down here.

We'll get to the second part, which is, I think, the darker,

grittier side, which is the well,

the jail and all that kinda stuff.

So, I'm gonna lead off with my full-spectrum camera,

and we're just gonna explore first, 'cause, like I said,

we haven't been down in this area,

and then we'll take it from there.

Billy and Jeff, they're in the brothel

and they are getting ready

to start their investigation as well.

[Zak] We are really underground, it is pit black.

Okay, we just got to this intersection.

We put a camera up here.

We put a camera in this other section back here.

[Aaron] It looks like it's where they slept.

And I think... and got laundry done.

And there's a bathroom,

so I'm assuming that that's what it is.

And there's a bathroom,

so I'm assuming that that's what it is.

We are in Pendleton underground.

It is very quiet down here.

It's darker than dark.

We don't know where we're going.

It's just all these little rooms and chambers and stuff.

And to know that the Oregon Trail went right over our heads...

I mean, you can just imagine all these rooms,

people living down here?

A lot of people have stated

that the Chinese laborers were forced to live underground,

they weren't allowed up top to be seen by anybody.

Guys, this is a really big room.

It's like a bunch of, like, cots.

[Zak] Okay, so we're just turning the lights on for a moment,

and right now, I'm going to deploy

[Zak] Over at the brothel,

Jeff and Billy are setting up a multi-camera monitoring station.

This is a really cool experiment

because what this is-- what this is is,

is an isolated video loop.

And what that is is, the camera is taking a picture

of what it's seeing, and it creates this infinite loop

that just-- it's kind of like when two mirrors face each other

that creates that infinite back and forth

that never, ever ends, except it's a video loop.

As I'm pointing this camera,

see, here's the camera,

the camera is shooting my hand.

But once I point the camera at what the camera is seeing,

it creates what's called an isolated video loop.

So when we zoom in, it creates this very,

very strange feedback loop of recording itself.

So, this is set up now, and it's recording what it's seeing

in an infinite loop, that's that isolated video loop,

and what we're hoping will happen

is that a spirit or a spirit's energy

will interfere with what this loop is recording itself

and maybe create a face or maybe create

something intelligent to let us know that it's changing the loop.
