is going to stay at his aunts while his

parents are abroad his father is going

to Hong Kong on business and his wife is

going with him to

[Music]

Holiday do you know how it all works yes

Alber team was telling me all about it

this afternoon artine oh yes the mayor

girl she's going to Cambridge is she

indeed

she's got a scholarship she's

brilliant I've looked after her ever

since her mother left and we manage on

our own very well indeed I'm sure you do

but a girl needs more than her father

you know it's not fair on

her

shocky albertin yes do you know anybody

called chocky chocky what is strange

name no I've never heard it before are

you

sure only that model you made yes it's

just like our home so I was wondering

her home I don't see how anybody can

live in a place like that Chuy does

weird what sort of person is this chalky

well she's not really a person not like

you or me that is is she something you

made up is that it

no are you sure you

haven't do you ever hear somebody

talking to like inside your head voices

you mean when there's nobody there yes

are you feeling all right yes

sorry

Matthew about this a chalky it doesn't

matter all right then i' better be

getting home anyway my father will be

waiting for me when you come again yes

of course but bye for now bye

shocky shocky where are

you I know you're there

somewhere why won't you talk to

me please

Chucky I don't understand what's going

on I wish you'd tell

me for

[Music]

oh

[Music]

hi Matthew hi come in

what do you want nothing I just came to

see

albery it's something wrong we had

Burgers last night oh no have you told

the police police you obviously don't

know us very well boy dad doesn't like

the Poli the last thing I want is a

horde of muddle-headed Oaths trampling

through my living room they might be

able to help catch the thieves that's

the last thing they're any good

for did they take anything a couple of

discs think I Disturbed them before they

could take anything else what do you

think they were

after now what do you think they were

after I mean I'm not a rich man there

are no gold bars underneath

floorboards perhaps the

computer have you told anybody that I've

got an expensive piece of electronic

Hardware in my

Cottage think carefully boy no I haven't

said anything to anybody except my aunt

oh your auntie well she wouldn't know

the difference between a main frame and

a wife up gramophone would you no what's

the matter boy do you think it's funny

no

yes yes I suppose it is when you come to

think about it all right

boy but look I don't want you to tell

anybody what you see in this house there

are calculations and mathematical

theories here that could be worth a

great deal of money do you understand

yes all

right it's very Fierce sometimes your

dad he doesn't have much patience what

did he do before he was a school Master

but they wouldn't let him go on because

they didn't agree with his ideas then I

started to show signs of being a good

mathematician so he decided to devote

all his time to teaching me is that when

they tried to put him in prison how did

you know that a told me

oh was it awful terrible we had to

barricade ourselves in the cottage

that's why my father doesn't like the

police don't you have a mother she left

us years ago she didn't understand us

I'm sorry

thanks Matthew yes do you have many

friends at home quite a few yes is it

like this with all of them like what

like it is with you and me you must have

noticed how often we don't need to speak

we just know what the other one's

thinking no no it isn't like this or

thing really

honestly

there do you think you can do

that right who who's going to go first

albertine on you can go first no let

Matthew go first oh come on Matt he has

a ball of play for

you now let's see if you can Center it

yourself shall we that's

it oh thanks Luke I think we're going to

need another

bag good well done what do I do now well

wet your

hands make sure the wheels going nice

and fast now cup your hands behind it

and I'll start trying to center it

properly oh there it goes never mind

it's not as easy as it looks first time

eh no come on

albertine now let's see what you can

do come on up your

hop there we are

all right I'll try

[Music]

r

[Music]

thanks that's

incredible are you sure you've never

done this before no never well all I can

say is one of your ancestors must have

been a master

[Music]

Potter yes it's actually you what a bore

well I suppose I better come up to town

tomorrow all right I'll see you then oh

the Richard Galler is having problems

with my exhibition I'm afraid I'll have

to go to London tomorrow to sort them

out do you want to come I'd rather stay

here thanks I thought you would the only

trouble is Luc will have to drive me and

I don't like leaving you here on your

own I won't be on my own I love albertin

are you sure well maybe you should ask

if you can go to her house okay

dad M can Matthew come over tomorrow

no if he has to

that's all right what is I can go to

abt's house for the day oh

[Applause]

[Music]

good you are lucky living here and

having this windmill yes I

know you could easily imagine You' gone

back in time say 100 years

ago I expect all those fields and woods

were just the same as they are now yes I

used to pretend I'd gone back in time

when I was little I found this secret

hideout in the woods that nobody else

knew about and I used to go and play in

it all by

myself come on let's go outside now

he

[Applause]

[Laughter]

Matt yeah Dad says your aunt told him

you'd wanton a medal last year yes sort

of for rescuing your sister yes didn't

really have to do anything what happened

got knocked into the river by a runaway

boat lucky you could swim yes yes it was

all I had to do was hold Polly up till

somebody came

[Music]

M why don't we play a

game I don't know many games except

except chess what about I Spy you must

know that oh yes you start all right

then I spy with my little ey something

beginning with w yes I spy with my

little ey something beginning with

roof go on your turn again I spy with my

might lie something beginning with

[Applause]

[Music]

tree okay uh tell me more about the girl

well she's something of a child genius

we're getting a Cambridge scholarship

proves that I managed to get some

examples of her work

computer discs sir I believe if you have

them analyzed you'll find she's

producing some remarkable results also

the quality of her work has changed

quite dramatically over the past year

but if she's always been so

exceptionally clever what makes you

think that chalky is working through her

now everything points to a connection

how

firstly the telepathy between Matthew

and albertine I believe it started

before they'd even met Matthew started

drawing pictures detailed drawings of

her father's windmill now Matthew had

never set eyes on it but albertine sees

it all the time perhaps these pictures

are not what he saw but what she did

also as soon as he arrived at his aunts

he was drawn to this Windmill and so to

the girl as though there was some

invisible beam pulling him there

invisible beam don't get carried away

Luke just stick to the facts huh yes

sir in addition to their telepathy the

girl has developed an amazing manual

dexterity fact I saw her working at The

Potter's Wheel as though she'd been

doing it for years and yet it was the

very first time she'd ever tried if you

recall sir much the same thing happened

to the boy last

year well that's very interesting but

it's hardly conclusive we still have no

firm evidence that chaky is involved I

believe we have now sir

Matthew's picture drawn last

year albertine's model made two days ago

without ever seeing Matthew's picture

if you do that that'll be Checkmate in

four moves if I do what move your King's

Bishop

too

a that's you look it's moving by itself

what's

happening must be because we're both

thinking about it don't be so silly

that's not possible is it I don't know

try another one

know

right you're King's Knight to Queen's

rot five

[Music]

right

fantastic we've done it let's try

another one no I don't think we should

why ever not I don't like it it's spooky

oh all right why don't we do something

else if you like what about that secret

hideout I was talking about should we go

and see if it's still there all right

then well come on then

yes this is it down here where come on

I'll show

you this is it what a great Hideout it's

not nearly as big as I remember you

could hide away in here for ages I've

never told anybody about it before it's

always been my secret place but I don't

mind you knowing

thanks

Matthew remember the other day you were

talking about something voices in your

head you said yes I keep thinking about

that what did you call it chalky that's

it why did you think I might know this

chalky I just thought

what don't know if I can tell you oh

that's not very fair to keep a secret is

it I've shown you my secret place yes I

know but Chucky's different does it

really talk to you inside your head

Chucky's not it she's

female she doesn't talk to me anymore

why did you think I might know

her the model you knew because of the

model didn't

you but nobody like that has ever spoken

to me before

she must have done no then it must be

the way you work I used to paint

but yes of course that's it what your

work of course you're brilliant it's

chalky I don't know what you're talking

about don't you see all these marvelous

ideas you've been having that's chalky

she started doing it with me last year

nobody's doing anything with me you're

saying I cheated it's not cheating

Chucky's helping you it's not true you

take that back that's a terrible thing

to say no it isn't really nobody's

helping me my work is on my own but

don't you see if chalky wanted to use

you she' put ideas into your head no I

don't want to be used I thought you my

friend but you're not you're not you're

horrible Al te please let me explain no

I hate you and you're stupid Chucky

leave me alone I hate you I hate you

[Music]

hello Matthew had a nice day I didn't

know you were back oh yes had everything

settled by lunchtime hate being in

London never stay there a minute longer

than I have to there what do you think

of that turned out rather well hasn't it

Matthew are you right what is it what's

the matter it's nothing have you fallen

out with albertine had a quarrel what

about can't tell you no never mind I'm

sure you'll patch it up

[Music]

I knew you were near Matthew I told you

to forget me I warned you Matthew Chucky

what's happening you are helping Al

aren't you I know I'm right you must

stop interfering Matthew what you are

doing is very dangerous you must stop it

at once why I don't understand you

should not have told albertine about me

she did not know now she is in great

danger you must leave her alone it is

the only way leave her

alone if you stay you will bring great

danger to albertine and to yourself I'm

sorry you must leave here go away please
