(WIND WHISTLES SOFTLY)
(WHIMSICAL MUSIC)
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(LAUGHTER) The new song is so good.
I know, right? Hey, Esme, come say hi.
So, these are my friends. (HISSES)
(GIRLS GASP, SCREAM)
(PANTS) Klara! Want to play a game?
Privacy! (CHUCKLES)
Play with me!
Seriously? Get lost!
Come on! Play!
Give it back. LUCY: Pim!
Want to come shopping? Whoo-hoo!
No!
Pim! (CHUCKLES)
(LAUGHS) He stole my book.
She won't play with me!
Really, you two! Can't you just get along?
That'd be easier if he wasn't so annoying!
Klara, you need to get your head out of your sketchbook
and give it a chance here.
What for? There's nothing to do!
Well, it'll be easier once school starts.
You'll make some friends. That's not for weeks!
Could you help finish unpacking before we get back?
Yes.
OK, Pim. Let's go shopping.
Ah! Oh!
Keep searching for you in my dreams...
Morning, Lucy! Morning!
Morning, Pim. Morning, Lorenzo.
Mum! Can I play this game?
No. Sorry, honey.
Ah! Mum, can I have a lolly?
Alright. You can pick one.
One! (GASPS)
And you get something for Klara as well.
Hmph. Mm-hm.
Hmm? Ah!
..if you don't come back soon...
What are you writing?
A song.
Like, the words for a song.
But you can't find the right ones?
How did you know? Good things can be hard to find.
But that's what makes it all worth it.
(CHUCKLES) Good line.
We collect coins.
Bit of a coin-collector myself, actually.
Oh! Oh! Lucy?
Lucy! Hi! Oh! Polly!
Long time, no see! Your mum told me you were back.
Oh! Do you work for... Yeah.
I love it. I got a job there last week.
We might work together, then. That'd be so great!
Gotta dash - but I'll see you at work.
Yeah. You will. Art contest?
Cash prize?
Bye!
Come on, Pim. Let's go.
I'll make my lunch. Uh-huh.
Honey, we're home!
Oh!
Klara, you haven't finished cleaning up!
I'll do it in a minute!
Klara! Oh!
Thank you, sweetie.
Any time.
Klara, I got this for you.
Art prize?
It says you can win money.
(WHISPERS) You could help Mum with the bills.
(LAUGHS) If I won.
Which would never happen.
Yes, it would. You could enter the one with Cat-girl.
Stop peeking in my sketchbook!
I like it. She looks just like a real girl.
Aah! (GASPS)
You OK?
Klara...
Mum, is this yours?
That old thing? Yes, it is.
Huh. Did you write these stories?
I did but a long time ago.
Wow.
I didn't know you wanted to be a writer.
Well, I tried.
I love stories! Read me one.
Oh, no. No! They were terrible!
You can just throw them away. Oh.
And the typewriter?
Just...throw it out.
"I wish I could've..."
Hello?
Sorry. Just thought I'd come visit.
It's OK.
Looks like there's a storm brewing.
(INHALES) You can smell the rain in the air.
But don't worry about that.
Come in.
Here. I...don't know what to draw.
Just start. If you don't like it, you can just rub it out.
I can't!
I don't draw in front of people.
It's OK. I'm not watching.
(BOTH LAUGH)
How long have you lived down here?
A while.
Don't you get lonely? I don't mind the solitude.
It's kind of my thing.
I miss my friends back home.
You don't like it here?
I like...some things.
Ah! You don't need to hide your art.
Calculators are boring!
You want a...dinosaur!
Mm-hm.
Or a dog-boy!
Ruff! Pim!
Can you tell me a dog-boy story?
Oh, sweetheart, I'm just not very good at telling stories.
OK. Then I'll start.
One day, Dog-boy's special powers led him to a bubblegum fountain!
But when he went to find it,
he found, um...Dog-dad's shoes!
(CHUCKLES) Dog-dad's shoes smelled like bubblegum?
Yeah!
But then what happened? (PHONE RINGS)
Sorry, Pim. It'll have to wait.
(SIGHS, GRUNTS) Uh... Huh?
Hello? Oh, hi, Mum.
I'm just working out some budget stuff.
Klara! You left this.
Mmm. Yep. Yep.
Please do it, Klara.
You're so good! (SIGHS) No, Mum.
No, it's too generous. I... (SIGHS)
I can't keep using your money!
MRS KATAYAMA: It's Daruma doll.
Draw one eye here
and wish for something.
(SIGHS HEAVILY)
(GASPS)
(MELLOW MUSIC PLAYS)
Hmm.
Eugh.
(PARROT SCREECHES)
(HORSE NEIGHS)
Huh? (GASPS)
Oh! (GRUNTS) Uh...
Oh! Arrgh!
Huh?
(GASPS)
(GRUNTS)
Oh!
(GRUNTS)
Oh!
(SIGHS)
Going into the world.
Again? Don't be back too late.
Yes.
(WHISPERS) Ask me about her if you want.
No! It's rude to sneak up on people like that.
I didn't sneak up on you. I was here first.
You just didn't notice.
So, you know Esme?
I'm not sure I'd agree I know her.
Nobody does.
She makes sure of that.
So, you're not related?
Only as much as ice and fire are related.
That's the problem. We don't go together.
You actually think she's letting you in, don't you?
(CHUCKLES) Well, you're dreaming.
She's nobody's friend. Trust me.
I don't, though.
Has she said anything to you about me?
No. (CHUCKLES)
Of course.
Where's Klara? She'll be home soon.
But it's getting late!
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(SIGHS) It's OK, honey.
Hey, can you set the table for me?
Yes.
We can't start dinner without Klara!
I've put hers in the oven.
You always said family dinner's important.
I know that I said that, Pim, but Klara's getting a bit older
and she needs more time to herself, now, OK?
(BREATHES HEAVILY) Pim, what's wrong?
(SNIFFLES, WHIMPERS)
Oh! Dad's gone!
No Klara's going away too!
No! Pim, that's not true!
Klara will be home soon, I promise.
What about Dad?
Well, he's...he's...
um...he's...
Um... Pim! Sweetheart!
(SIGHS)
Oh!
Pim, I'm sorry.
It's hard without Dad here, isn't it?
Come on.
I've got something that might cheer you up.
Your typewriter!
I like to call it a story machine.
Should we write about Dog-boy?
Yeah!
"Once upon a time, Dog-boy..."
Went to the beach!
And he could hear Dog-dad barking.
Great!
Getting it.
But his barking was coming from way across the sea.
But there was a boat out there.
That's where he was! In the boat!
But Dog-boy couldn't swim.
And he didn't have his own boat - but maybe he could make one.
Yeah! He made it from an old couch.
With a sail. And it worked!
He sailed out to Dad!
It was going very well until...
The boat started sinking!
It was really dangerous. (YAWNS)
And then...
Oh!
Here.
Come on.
Hmm.
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(DOG BARKS)
Look who's back, hey?
I was starting to get worried about you.
Sorry! I didn't notice the time.
That's OK. Find something interesting to do?
Mmm...kinda.
Thank you. For what?
My typewriter.
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(SIGHS)
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(WIND GUSTS)
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(DOG BARKS)
(THUNDERCLAP)
(THUNDERCLAP)
I'd step back, if I were you.
(GASPS) Beautiful, isn't it?
The things that come out of the dark.
When it's safe. What is it?
Unsent love letters.
Poems. Lost diaries.
Confessions.
Wishes.
Dreams.
"And I can't help but wonder what my life could be..."
(THUNDERCLAP)
(WOMAN SPEAKS JAPANESE)
"I should have written this to you but it's too late."
(GASPS)
You can hide your thoughts and feelings
but they never really go away.
(THUNDERCLAP)
They all find their way back here.
To this.
I love that drawing, by the way.
You don't?
It's like...my hands can't draw what I'm picturing in my head.
Mine, neither.
All your drawings!
It's OK. Everything comes back after the rain.
You should go home.
This is gonna be a big one. Come with me, then.
OK.
(BOTH LAUGH)
(THUNDERCLAP)
You should come in.
Esme! Come back!
(CROWS CAW)
"It all changes with the rain."
One little pup's out of his kennel early.
Can we finish the story?
I thought you'd never ask!
Whew! Looks like we left Dog-boy sinking in the middle of the sea!
We'll need one heck of a turning-point to save him.
The boat sinks and then...
And then... Mum!
You're writing!
What happened to you?
What?
"Dug...ong"?
Dugong.
Hey! That's it!
Dog-boy gets rescued by a dugong!
Bestest animal in the ocean!
Suddenly, the dugong arrived to rescue Dog-boy
and carried him all the way to Dad's boat.
But maybe...Dad wasn't there.
But he left an important message for Dog-boy,
with someone else who was there.
Who?
Dog-boy's mum. (GASPS)
What was the message?
It was...this!
(LAUGHS) Tickle, tickle!
(BOTH LAUGH)
Come here! You're not getting out of this!
Come on!
Everything turns strange
Feelings rearrange
I'm right here...
(GASPS) That's it!
I'm right here
I'm right here...
