This is some of the most remote places still left in Australia, and this is

here in the west coast of Tasmania.

Big gold country.

This could be our biggest adventure yet, mate.

We're going to go and check a spot that Nev's got in his diary. Grab your diary

Now, Carina is a place where some of the biggest nuggets they've ever found in

Tassie. Nuggets up to 243 ounces.

Yep. They're good-sized nuggets.

So, Nev's got that spot marked there.

He was guiding us on another trip, mate.

There's little mappies drawn in there, too.

As you know.

With all the machinery breakdown and Jaden going down, disruptions that we've

had has been the perfect time for Nev to come in and say, here you go, go on this

trip. And he definitely taught us, you know, do what you can while you can. So

that's what we're going to do, mate.

Late last year, a good friend of mine, Nev, passed away.

Nev left me a diary that's got 40 years of his prospecting and mining secrets.

Last season, Brent Shannon and his son Caden followed clues from Neville

Perry's gold journal into Victoria's high country in search of one of the

rarest forms of gold.

That's crystalline gold!

You got it! And following a series of setbacks stalling their main

operation... I'm not going anywhere here.

He's voluntarily stuck.

They're chasing new clues that have led them on a first-time prospecting mission

nearly 800 kilometres from their home into Tasmania's wild frontier.

It is absolutely stunning. This is a beautiful, beautiful country. I haven't

seen anything like this before.

Obviously Tasmania, mate. It was attached to the mainland Australia,

attached to Victoria.

Millions and millions of years ago, their gold fields were virtually

connected, but obviously we've drifted apart, there's an ocean in between us,

and things are very different down here.

Caddo's paddock, German gully, very different to what we're seeing here.

More than half a billion years ago, Australia sat on the edge of

supercontinent Gondwana, where tectonic collisions fractured the Earth's crust.

allowing mineral-rich fluids to rise and form gold deposits.

Over time, the continent split apart and Tasmania continued to drift from

mainland Australia.

In 1852, the discovery of gold nuggets weighing up to 7.2 kilos

in Tasmania drew prospectors across Bass Strait chasing another boom.

But the island's rugged terrain proved far tougher than Victoria's alluvial

goldfields, forcing many miners to abandon their dream of striking it rich.

Before we lost service, I just checked the gold price. Looked like it's about

to start moving upwards.

We're at 5,000 an ounce now.

And, you know, you just never know.

Sky's the limit.

to help prove up the Dusty Wins lease on the outskirts of Yalgoo.

It's only 1.38.

You might need to walk away from this one.

But he fell well short of the three-ounce target needed to prove the

lease's value to his prospective buyer.

It's not good enough.

I've just got to ring the buyers up and just see if I can get a short extension

on time.

Well, I can't give you a hand, Shane. I'm gone. I'm out of here.

What we'll do is we'll just shallow rip that and see whether we need to go

deeper or not. So you're bringing the machine around. I'll get the backhoe

Really hoping that Mel can come through and find us a couple more options, you

know, because this option is not really working for us. So, you know, we're

still going to sort of do a bit more pushing, but if we don't find gold soon,

then we're going to have to move on. So, you know, we're spending a lot of time

there's only so far you can go as well so unfortunately devil's cups now sold

and the kraken's held up by paperwork so right now if this doesn't pan out we've

got nowhere to go we've got melo hunting for leases we're exploring this one

but unless we go to something soon that's our season pretty much dead in

season, the Desert Digger's newest recruit, Brad McGee, sealed a multi

-million dollar deal for the gravel rights on his Devil's Cut lease.

Well, they're shaking hands.

That's got to be a good sign.

Locking the team out from mining it for gold.

Ground's a vital thing. If you don't have ground, we can't work.

And with gold price this high, everyone else is looking for good ground as well.

But they were presented with a lifeline when the neighbouring lease came up for

sale. So what's the deal on the table?

Well, she's a 150 hectare lease. I want 50 grand for it. How long have we got to

check this place out?

I've got a few people interested, mate, so maybe a week. All right, one week.

Now, with Mel and Alex's Kraken lease also stalled by permit delays and no

other ground to work, the team have just 48 hours to decide whether to buy this

lease or walk away for good.

We really need to get this hole down into the ground as quick as possible.

Because if this one doesn't pay, we need to put a few more cuts in before we rip

this place off.

The more places we check, the more chance we've got of hitting something.

But at the moment, it's not real flash.

So at the moment, I'm just trying to find some surface nuggets somewhere

where the boys can come and scrape.

Not really having a lot of luck at the moment, so hopefully...

live leases and figure something out.

So 10Graph basically shows us if the lease is in good standing, if it's got

good resource on it and there's time left on the lease.

So, the green here, this is live leases, and the blue is pending leases. And you

can see that there's people snapping up pending leases here. So, that's why it's

so urgent that I get onto this right away.

So, some people, their full-time jobs are just buying and selling leases.

They just sit there all day and they go on here and have a look, and they get

snapped up really quick.

The problem with WA is it's so spread out. It's huge here. And sometimes you

look at a lease, but then it's, like, 1,000 kilometres away.

So, you know...

Well, this one looks promising.

It shows that there's historical workings there, which is a good sign,

but there's also big mining companies that are working around that, so that's

a sign that there's gold there.

No, it's not picking up.

Look, I think this is going to get snapped up really quick, so I'm just

going to head over to his lease and hopefully he's there.

and forming a clay.

That is the stuff the gold gets stuck in.

And that is what we want to see.

So what I'm doing here, all the smaller particles will fall through the sieve

and into the pan.

All the larger stone, unless it's a good nugget, will be above the sieve.

We're lacking ground. We've got lots of equipment, lots of manpower. But without

the ground, you've got no gold.

So it's not a good position to be in.

Yeah, look a part of the problem is I mean, you know, this thing's going

through a lot of fuel It ends up being a very expensive exercise, you know, you

can cost yourself five grand a week easily, you know So at the moment we're

sort of exploring this lease, but um, we really can't put out all the eggs in one

basket So that's why Mel's out there sort of trying to find us other things

to look at other ground to look at so You know, we're not doing too well here.

You know, just in the time that it took me to drive to the lease where Steve

was, it was snapped up in that time. It's never been like this.

Everything's just moving so fast at the moment and I obviously want to stay one

step ahead.

You know, we're so far into our season and things just haven't gone the way we

planned. So I just don't know what else to do at this point.

Now we know there's gold here. Caden's going to be the excavator with the

shovel. He's going to... Just bulk it out into a pan.

Clay, gravel, all mixed up. I'm going to grab this golden clay and gravel, throw

it into our sieve pan, into this pan, and it just breaks the clay up, just

like a wash plant.

And all of it falls through the screen and then into the pan,

then across our gold sluice.

As the water's running across the sluice here, these are called drop riffles.

You can actually see the black sand already starting to accumulate straight

away. And the black sand is actually the next heaviest thing to gold. So you can

see that's already being caught straight away.

That's a good sign.

So by doing it this way, we literally could get through 200 pans in an hour

versus just doing it separately, we might only get through 20.

This is just gold soup here.

There's a lot of old-timers' workings around. They could have been here for

about, you know, maybe 100, 150 years.

Judging by the amount that's here, they must have been getting some gold. So I

reckon that is definitely a reason why Nev would have marked it down as a point

of interest.

You know, it's kind of a strange feeling knowing that, you know, where I'm

walking right now, Nev could have been in this very spot, even though he is

gone. Going on these adventures, hunting for the clues that Nev's left behind.

Feels like he's still here.
