Wings of Voice no longer had much of a purpose to me.

But I had an obligation to these singers

to see the competition through.

It won't be all celebration today for our talented singers.

Forty of the faces you see up here will be going home tonight.

But I was finding it hard to stay focused on the competition

with everything I'd been learning about these pilots.

Quin.

Unfortunately, you will not be advancing.

It was sort of shocking to discover

that no matter what a pilot is going through emotionally,

talking to a therapist about it

might lead to them losing their license.

So, during breaks in the competition,

I brought in actors posing as crew members

to casually engage co-pilots in conversation.

You look pretty young to be a pilot.

-Twenty-seven. Yeah. -Twenty-seven? Okay.

I would have guessed younger, actually.

I thought it might be nice to just give them a release valve,

in case they needed it.

-It's been a year since the breakup? -Yeah, yeah.

-Maybe a year and a half, yeah. -Did you guys live together?

-Yeah. For about a year, yeah. -Oh, wow.

I remember sitting there in my room, just...

-stunned. -Yeah.

You know, like, "How could that happen?"

I just want to be clear in case the FAA is watching.

This is in no way therapy.

This is just two people talking.

-It's not-- I'm not unhappy... -Yeah.

...but am I fulfilled?

Would I like to be doing something different?

-I don't know. -You don't know?

What would you do if you could do something different?

Yeah, that's the thing...

But as I listened in on these private conversations,

I noticed one co-pilot

who was having an especially hard time

talking about stuff.

-No? -No.

Yep, that's--

Colin is a First Officer who flies for an air cargo company.

And when his dating life came up, he was very short on words.

Is that like an issue then,

in piloting? Where you're not able to like--

It's definitely-- Yeah. It's definitely a common thing.

-Excuse me. Common thing. -You're good.

-Any dates recently or-- -Nope. Doesn't really work out.

I mean, yeah, that's tough. That's a tough time to--

And I was curious to find out more.

I couldn't help but overhear you talking

with our boom operator, Lucas, one of our operators.

-Yep, seems like a nice guy. -Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

You guys were talking about dating stuff? Or...

-A little bit, yeah. -What was--

Like, "How do you initiate a con-- that conversation

-with total strangers" type thing. -Oh, yeah.

Like, trying to figure out the wording of it,

'cause in person you have that one shot and you just do it.

-Yeah. -Yeah, I don't know.

Yeah.

Not-- It hasn't worked. It didn't work.

But Colin's struggle didn't surprise me.

Whenever I travel now,

I can't help but notice pilots everywhere

just not talking to each other.

Standing in complete silence moments before flying

hundreds of people through the sky.

Was this really how to start a healthy relationship

between two strangers?

What if this time was instead used to understand each other?

To build a relationship that could withstand

any challenge that comes their way.

But what tools does a pilot need to do this?

I've tried things like trying to be someone you're not,

trying to seem more outgoing or cooler than you are.

-You've tried that? -I've tried that.

-How do you-- -I fell right on my face.

-Oh, really? With a girl? -Yep. Yep.

It's one of those things where I was kind of, like,

almost humiliated, so I was like,

"Let's get all that information out of my head."

Colin had recently messaged a woman.

"Hey, do you have any travel tips for Greenland and Iceland?"

"I saw you've been there a couple times."

-This is just some girl? -Yeah.

Oh, okay.

You think you'll get a response?

-Maybe. -Okay.

Cool.

Okay, come on in here.

So this is why I asked you what you'd be wearing today.

-Okay. -To send photos.

It's something I've been working on called The Pack.

-Yep. -And so I think

it may have the potential to, like, help change human behavior.

I saw a nature documentary recently

where it said that animals will hunt in packs...

-Colin. -Colin.

...'cause it gives each individual animal

the confidence to do things

they'd normally be afraid to do on their own.

-You wanna get a coffee real quick? -Wanna get a coffee?

-Sure. Yeah. -All right.

I wondered if that idea applied to humans

would make social interactions feel less scary.

Rehearsing a date scenario with an actress,

but now with 15 of you instead of just one.

Black coffee, that's pretty hardcore.

-It's normal. -It's normal.

-It's much easier to do. -It's much easier to do.

I had a theory

that the start of a romantic relationship

is a great parallel

for two pilots meeting before a flight.

What's the longest you could go without coffee?

I mean, I could probably just go without it for a day,

but it definitely helps...

You become intimately involved with a stranger

where both people are desperately trying

to read each other,

but the pressure to show the best version of yourself

can prevent you from sharing what you actually feel.

Yeah, so I think I need

to probably get to the airport, so...

Oh! Oh, you're going straight to the airport.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

-Best of luck? -Yeah, thank you. You, too.

Okay. Take it easy.

-Safe travels. -Yeah, you, too.

You sort of said, "Oh, I gotta go. I'll see you later."

But did you feel like you gave the impression

that you would want to see her again?

I don't know.

I felt like Colin was gaining confidence

with this Pack.

I'd like to do it again sometime later this week if you're free.

-I'd love that. -Great.

But of course, this date was all fake.

For me to know if any technique

would actually help change Colin's behavior,

he would need to get into a real relationship.

Nope.

He didn't have any replies yet on his DMs.

Well...

Sounds-- Seems pretty normal for just a random person.

-Yeah. -So after Colin left,

I decided to gather all the actors with a different idea.

So, who here is into Colin?

Into him how?

-Can you define what that means? -When I say "into,"

I mean you find him cute,

or are attracted to him.

I mean, I think he's kind of charming.

Okay, raise your hand and keep it up

-if you're into him. -He's kind of cute.

Raise your hand. You? Okay, okay.

So hands-- One, two, three here. Okay.

The rest of you guys can leave.

So what do you guys like the most about Colin?

He seems like the kind of guy where once you get to know him,

he's probably funny.

-Yeah. -But--

He's a little reserved.

I mean, I could be wrong, but--

-He was just really sweet, and-- -Yeah.

He seems to, yeah, go do a lot of adventures

and things like that, and that's--

You know, I'm not so much attracted to men physically.

-It's more intellectually. -He's smart.

-I mean, Colin's really smart. -I know, and I like--

That's what I like. To me, that's what turns me on.

You're turned on by his intelligence.

I'm turned on by intelligence.

Like, when I was a little kid,

Einstein was a guy I thought was so sexy.

-Einstein? -Einstein, yes.

-Really? -Yeah, and I read his story

and everything. I was like,

"Oh, yeah, this is the kind of man I would have loved."

And he had a baby when he was really young.

I don't want to say that, but--

But I'm not saying it's a dream. I was wide awake when I had it.

Well, I wasn't asleep...

I mean, I was wet and I was awake.

I was reading his book, his biography.

And when I read about him,

and looked at that E equals MC squared,

I don't know, it was just a turn-on.

-I can't really explain it. -And you got wet in that moment.

Yeah, I literally got wet in the moment.

So you feel like Colin's kind of an Einstein?

Well, even, you know-- He's got intelligence.

-That's what I'm saying. -Yeah.

I wouldn't say he's an Einstein. Einstein is one of a kind.

It was hard to say the true level of interest

any of these women had in Colin.

Other than like strictly physical,

I mean, just the way that he holds himself

I think is kind of charming.

But if something real were to happen here,

I knew I couldn't force it.

Ethically speaking, I can't ask you

to pursue Colin,

but if tomorrow during any one of your breaks,

-you wanna shoot your shot... -Yeah.

Colin said he didn't have much of a social life

outside of his job,

so I thought it might be helpful

for him to practice expressing romantic interest to a colleague.

No. Just usual trashy fare.

But I was most curious to see if the time he had spent with his Pack

would help Colin form real chemistry

once everyone was off the clock.

Did you go to school in...

-Alabama? -Yeah. I went to high school

about half an hour south of Huntsville.

-Oh, okay. -I was going to go to Ireland,

and then my-- One of my bartender friends said,

"Hey, dummy, Oktoberfest is happening!"

-So, I changed plans. -"Go there!" Oh, my God.

Two days later, I was on the flight to Munich.

-And how was that? -Awesome.

-That was probably insane. -Yeah.

So, yeah, I travel places,

but my list never gets any shorter.

See, well, what do you have on the list, though?

Like, I've got-- I do eventually, like, want to climb Kilimanjaro.

Need to explore more of Europe.

Okay.

Like I said, I need to finish--

But it was pretty unclear to me

if anything came from these conversations.

-Nope. -Nothing?

I got some good travel ideas from one of the actresses, Emma.

-Oh, yeah? -So we might try and bounce ideas

off of each other over a cup of coffee or something.

Bounce ideas?

-Yep. -Good.

You know, she actually told me

that she has a bit of a crush on you.

Interesting.

You ask her out, or she ask you out?

-Little of both. -Little of both?

Yeah, we'll see.

I hear you and Colin might be going out

or have a plan?

Yeah, maybe some coffee, but I don't know where.

I'm only saying, you know, Collin is just such a sweet guy.

you know, didn't have the best intentions

in terms of pursuing him, but--

I wouldn't say I'm that person, and I-- because I literally...

This is too hard for me to even do.

It seemed like the foundation

for a genuine connection was there.

But just because you're going on a first date,

it doesn't mean two people have truly bonded yet.

-Where are you from, brother? -Indianapolis.

Oh, sick. You a Colts fan?

I know that in any relationship,

the challenges are specific to who you are as individuals.

Does your, like, whole family live out there, too?

Yeah, I live with my grandma and my family right now.

So before Colin and Emma left that day,

I had five female actors secretly study her

and also had five male actors study Colin.

When you're not flying, what do you like to do?

Hiking, trivia.

-Playing Irish folk music. -Wha-- Irish folk music?

-Playing Irish folk music? -Yeah.

These actors needed to learn everything

about this blossoming couple,

because I had a plan that was weeks in the making,

designed specifically to give Colin's new relationship

the best chance of success.

Oh, wow. Yeah, nice.

So, these are saltwater fish, and the one that looks like--

With five exact replicas of Colin's studio apartment

and five fake versions of him and Emma inside of it,

I could use this as a predictive tool

that would hopefully reveal every possible challenge

a new couple might face,

allowing Colin to have a sneak peek at his own life.

The actors were able to choose

their own scene partner for this experiment,

based on who they felt the most genuine chemistry with

as their real selves.

Oh, yeah?

This was because I wanted them to decide on their own

how the relationships would organically evolve.

I actually get a little nervous sometimes when I fly.

-Oh, really? -Yeah.

-It can be a little nerve-wracking. -Do you see...

That way, I could observe the challenges

the actors were encountering and that would tell me

what Colin would likely encounter with Emma.

-How's it been going? -I think it's been going good.

I think he's trying to...

I think he's a little nervous.

I tried to give him, like, the eye, and he wasn't taking the hint.

-Okay. "The eye," you said? -Yeah, like, "the eye."

You know, when you look at one eye,

look at the lips, look back up.

-You know, the little trick? -What is that?

It's a little flirty trick women do.

And what's the trick?

It's kind of supposed to be like a subconscious code

for like, "Hey, you wanna kiss me?"

-Oh, really? -I don't know, I tried to get him

to kiss-- I don't know, I've tried it before and it worked.

-I got told that once. Yeah. -Oh, really?

Can you just show me-- show me what you did?

'Cause I was like...

And the guy's supposed to know

-from that-- -Hopefully they get the hint.

I've talked with girls.

-It's a thing. -Yeah, yeah.

-Yeah. -Let me see it again.

All right, yeah.

I sort of see, it's like-- Yeah, yeah.

-All right. All right. -I get it.

Okay. All right, cool.

-I'll let you get back to it. -All right, cool.

-Thank you. -Okay. Thanks, yeah.

So, this is so we can predict any issues that might arise for you.

I felt it was finally time to show Colin what we'd been up to.

Very interesting.

But what I was really curious about

was seeing how things were going with him and Emma.

So how was your date?

-Good. -Good?

-It went well. -Was there any...

-Nope. -No.

Did-- Do you feel like she wanted to or...

Didn't notice any hints that indicated it this time.

-Okay. -So, if it was, it was very subtle.

Yeah, well, it can be subtle sometimes, right?

-Yep. -It's sort of hard to tell.

Did she look-- Did she stare at you for a while ever?

A couple times.

How do you know that wasn't it?

Good question.

Did she look at your eyes,

then to your lips, and then back to your eyes?

If she did, I didn't notice it.

I mean, but it's not a bad thing. Like...

-Yeah. -...'cause these things are hard

and that's why we have the Pack, right?

-Which was helpful, no? -Yep.

-Oh, I was looking that way. -Oh, okay.

-I thought you looked over at me. -I was kind of glancing.

Like kind of scanning the entire thing.

Yeah. Didn't know if you were looking at my face.

This is a really nice place.

like a ceremonial spear from Tanzania.

One great thing about the Pack

is that it can make a co-pilot feel

like his struggles are everyone's struggles

and that you're not alone in taking on personal challenges.

So what do you want to do?

That's a good question.

I've got the fish tank over there if you want to learn about fish.

-I can be that nerd. -Yeah, I--

It looks like those two were kissing for a second.

Yeah, they definitely--

They tend to pair up and then do their own thing.

-Kind of funny sometimes. -Yeah.

But I was starting to notice that the Pack had limitations.

How's everything going with Colin?

I think, yeah, good.

-Good? -Yeah, yeah!

Like, he'd tell me about his flying thing.

I'd kind of, like, do a joke or something.

And at least he laughed. Like, I wasn't just, you know...

It went good.

Has he kissed you yet? Tried to kiss you?

-No. -Oh, okay.

Is that something you would want?

Yeah. I mean, yeah.

Oh, okay. Sure. Nice.

But, like, maybe it's my-- I'm not giving out the right signals.

-How would I signal to him? -What signals do you give?

Like, it's just in the eyes. Like, you give signals that way.

-You're looking at his eyes? -Yeah.

I did it multiple times.

Like, "Are you gonna kiss me or what?"

Whatever Colin practiced with his Pack

didn't seem to be changing his real-world behavior.

But we worked really hard on this kiss thing.

You know a lot about fish.

-Yeah. -That's cool.

-Yep. -Yep.

Well, I mean...

So when I found out where Colin's next date was with Emma,

I was sure to be watching from afar.

-Yes! -From what I could see,

that high-five was the only physical contact they had

while they were playing.

A little more power there, bud. A little more.

That's my line.

But I knew that the classic moment for a kiss

is when you say goodbye.

I can do the concertina, which is using every single finger...

-Yeah, yeah. -...including the pinkies,

which are useless,

-but can't do string. -No?

Well, the-- I mean, guitar is not too bad.

That's like the only one.

But like I could not do cello. Violin?

-That-- No. That's too hard. -Yeah.

If it has frets, you know where to go.

Yeah, at least you can play around with it,

but that's like you gotta do, like... There's such a little window.

-Yeah. -So, I don't know.

Yeah.

I was about to say, if it is, I'm late.

Maybe a man's Pack can only get him so far.

I can wear my pilot outfit and be your butler.

-Nice. -And you can have a bell.

Some of these fake relationships

were so far ahead of the real Colin and Emma,

they bore almost no resemblance.

But the actor's choice of how and when

to become intimate intrigued me.

Before the experiment began,

I had given the actors the freedom to not participate

if they felt they had a conflict of interest.

Yeah, I guess I should ask you guys

if either of you are in a relationship or anything

and you would want to opt out of this because of that.

-I don't know if that's something-- -Oh, no--

Are either of you in a relationship?

-I'm not. -You're not?

-I am. Yeah. -Oh, you are?

-Okay, is that okay? -No, but this is--

-Yeah, totally fine. Yeah. -Okay.

But one of the actresses said something I couldn't shake.

When I'm like approaching, like, a love scene,

obviously I know it's not "real" real,

but, like, it was real

for like a minute. You know what I mean?

It's real for you when you're doing it?

Yeah, like it's happening while it's happening.

-But it's not "real" real. -Does that make sense? Yeah.

-Like the emotions feel real. -Yeah.

It feels like it's-- I'm like, "Oh, I really, like...

I feel this way about this person right now."

-Like feel love? -Yeah.

And your boyfriend's like cool with all that?

-Yeah. -Okay.

-It's good that he understands. -Yeah.

He would get fired otherwise.

This was confusing to me.

I recently acted in a dramatic series that aired on Paramount Plus,

a network with some questionable viewpoints.

In the show, I had to act as a husband

who was deeply in love with his wife.

-I'm so happy. -You are.

You are happy.

But even though I was mimicking the expressions of a man in love,

inside my head,

I didn't feel that at all for the actress playing my wife.

I was basically just copying the expressions

of other people in love that I had seen on TV and movies.

So I didn't understand how an actor can be feeling real love

in a completely fake relationship.

We had an intimacy coordinator on set

that the actors were free to consult with

before doing anything with each other.

So what did they say they wanted to do?

Well, they said that they've already kissed a lot,

so that's obviously okay with them.

Like, physically, they seem like they're really... comfortable.

You know she has a boyfriend, right?

In real life?

-Yeah. -Yeah.

She didn't mention it.

Oh, no, but I'm just saying, like...

Yeah.

It's weird, isn't it?

But it's one of those things that like actors get to do.

I know.

Because this wasn't a traditional acting role,

in an effort to maintain full transparency,

I encouraged the actors to invite

any significant others they might have

to come observe everything we were doing.

-She's pretty talented, huh? -Yeah. Look at her go.

How long you guys been together?

A year and a half.

-Oh, nice. -Yeah.

But we've known each other for longer than that.

-Oh, really? -Yeah.

You cool with all this?

She's an actress.

I was realizing there's this magical thing that happens

when people say that they're acting.

For these guys...

could you ask them how far they'd be comfortable going

in terms of intimacy?

So part of that is up to you,

like, in terms of-- 'cause you're the director, like...

What is the story that you want to tell through the intimacy?

I'd like to leave it up to them...

-if that's okay. -Okay. Okay.

Take it off.

I mean, it's not like my favorite thing to see

but it doesn't feel like I'm watching

my girlfriend get intimate with another man.

It feels like... I'm watching the character she's created.

Like, she's assumed a character, and I assume so has he.

So, it's...

It's in a weird way like removed from themselves.

It was like the concept of acting itself

disarmed everyone in its presence.

-Oh, hi! -How's it going?

And the actor gets a free pass for virtually any behavior.

Everything I'd been trying to do

just comes down to getting co-pilots and captains

to both act on their true feelings.

Either speaking up about their fears,

or admitting to your co-pilot that you might not know everything.

These are feelings that every pilot already has,

but many struggle to act upon

because they fear the consequences.

Could the concept of acting give pilots a loophole

to do the things they're most afraid of?

So have you ever acted before?

No, I haven't.

Is it something you'd be interested in giving a try?

Possibly.

So this scene will be mostly improv,

and your character is named Captain Powers

-in this, okay? -All right.

-A little funny, right? -Yeah.

And he's called that because he actually has a power,

which is that every date he goes on,

he has no problem asking for a kiss and then doing it. Okay?

And the other character is named Jennifer Kissme.

And Jennifer will be played by Emma.

-Okay. -Okay.

-Who's an actress, as you know. -Yeah.

All right. Well, let me go get your scene partner then.

Okay.

For your character, just think about

where you're coming from,

what you're doing now, and where you're going.

Okay, I'm inviting this person back to my apartment.

Like, how do you feel about me as the character?

-Like, think about that. -Yep.

It's not that bad.

It's literally like, it's nothing, dude.

It's... It's-- I could not fly a plane.

You can act. Like, anybody can...

-You're just being yourself. So... -Okay.

Wow. Yeah, it's really nice.

-Thank you. -Yeah.

A little bit cluttered, but...

-Really good picture. -Yeah, that was about 9,000 feet

descending into Indianapolis.

What camera do you have?

-That was just an iPhone. -Can I sit down?

-Oh yeah, of course. -Yeah?

Yeah, that's really cool.

Yeah, I don't know where I got the eye for photography

'cause neither of my parents are good at it.

-Really? -Yeah.

And then I can use the tipper here and...

They are very well known for their red wines.

-Okay. -Like the Malbecs.

Well, what's the best one, have you noticed?

I think overall my favorites are from Portugal.

-Yeah? -For such a small country,

they've got a pretty wide variety of climates to grow.

So you get subtle differences depending on where you get it.

If you get it from the north side or from the south side.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

Yeah.

Can I kiss you?

-Yeah. -Yeah.

I don't know.

You don't know?

We could open up one of those bottles of wine, if you like.

Sure.

Maybe we all need an excuse to be our true selves,

and we're just looking for permission.

I'm trying to be like, "Portugal,"

-or like, "Yeah, yeah." -No.

Yeah, it's good.

-Yeah? -Yeah.

Yeah.

It was hard to know the meaning of a single kiss

on someone's cheek.

But if this allowed a co-pilot to act on how they really feel,

maybe I was actually onto something.

You actually did really good.

-I didn't think-- I mean, I was-- -Thank you.

Yeah, that tip you gave me about figuring out where--

like, where we came from rather than just, you show up...

-Yeah. -...was very helpful.

Oh, wow.

So HBO is paying for all this,

and they basically gave me, you know, a blank check

as long as I don't go over budget.

Wow.

Yeah, the only requirement is that...

everything I'm doing related to aviation safety

has to be somewhat entertaining, I guess.

Right. That's what sells.

-You recognize this? -Yeah, I do.

I knew that the only place

to make real change happen in aviation is through Congress.

That's what former NTSB member John Goglia told me.

And he said that if I ever had a solution

to this cockpit communication issue I've been exploring,

we could work together to get it on the radar

of lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

This is some footage I've captured.

These are real pilots.

They're not saying a single word to each other.

Right. I see it all over.

-You see it? -Yeah.

In my research, I'm finding out all these pilots--

there's all this time before the flight

where they're hanging out

in the pilot's lounge or in different situations,

and they're just sitting apart.

Yep, I see that, too.

-You do? -Yes.

So, I'm thinking it's less about, you know, this critical moment

where you might need to take over the controls

and assert yourself,

and more about trying to establish a relationship

from the very start so there's no friction

when an emergency actually happens.

-Right, right. -Does that make sense?

That does make sense.

I don't think anybody's focused in on that part of it. The--

Most of the programs have been focused in the cockpit,

and they're not looking outside the cockpit.

And I think there's some low-hanging fruit

outside the cockpit.

Why am I the only one talking about this?

I don't think the airlines are focused in on it.
