spend more time

actually dealing with

the difficult end of social work

than a lot of social workers do.

The only way in which
we are going to be able to influence

penal policy in a progressive way

over the next decade

is by furthering the relationship,

almost non-existent relationship
at the moment,

that we have with people that work
in such institutions,

and to ensure that there is some form
of relationship

between our ideas and theirs.

interactive aspect of a person,

at something very general,

like the relationship between
our bodies and our emotions,

so perhaps we'd be touching each other.

You know, one of the things
we don't do in this world is touch.

So you have a bit of a group grope,

that you put it like that because

you know, it makes it sound like
it's something nasty and dreadful

and awful, but

it's a very nice sort of thing

a sexual connotation

-in its narrow sense.

Well, as bits of the world
can end up like that,

then, uh, people take
from it different things.

The only sorts of claims
that I try to make

for Encounter,

is that maybe, at the end of an evening,

some of us know a little bit more
about ourselves

than we did
at the beginning of the evening.

Quite honestly, I don't think
there's anything wrong with that.

Fair enough.

Thing is, however much I try

to put myself in their situation,

I don't know how
they can bring themselves to do it.

Well, the sociological work
on prostitution

isn't very helpful either.

There's work by, um, Polsky,

where he's taking
a functionalist perspective

related to the Parsonian model
of functional imperatives.

And what he's suggesting is
that prostitution could be regarded

as functional for society
in the sense that it acts

as some sort of safety valve

helping to maintain
the double institutionalisation of sex,

both within marriage
and within a few specified sex acts.

But of course, there's all

the logical problems
with the functionalist model.

Problem of reification
tautology and teleology.

L, um, personally

tend to take a phenomenological view,

by which I mean that the question
that I'm interested in is how

prostitution becomes to be seen

as a thing in the world.

How an act that is seen as prostitution

gains a status of something real

in a de-contextualised
sort of sense,

when in fact how you could view it

would be that the candidate

act of prostitution

relies upon a reflexivity

between the candidate act

and the indexical features
of the social situation.

So, in other words, we're talking about
doing it for a good degree

or for promotion at work

or for a night out at the pictures
and a meal.

Or any of those things.
I mean, what is it'?

Um...

that would go out fairly late.

TV REPORTER: Things have been badly
done and very badly handled in the past.

LOUISE: And with the best intentions.

I've seen very well meaning programmes
on homosexuals, for instance,

that showed two men making a bed,

close-up of ringed hands
and the men saying,

"Well, we've been accepted like

"any other couple.
The neighbours accept us."

And that's just no use at all.

TV RESEARCHER: I mean, we wouldn't be
into anything like that.

I mean, this is where you could be
of a great help to us, really.

Because, I mean, if you say that things
aren't on, or it could be very tricky

for a person, then of course
we would respect that.

But you must realise that it'd be
much more powerful if we could

actually show real-life prostitutes.
