- My granddaughter entered my life in 1995.

And I got to raise her.

And she came to live with me when

she was a little tiny baby.

So then, of course, I had to concentrate

more on making money.

So I had many crazy little jobs.

we have had all season, which is brilliant.

- But in between while I worked,

I'd write songs all the time.

- I grew up with these songs as part of my childhood,

almost feeling like we were living in a musical.

And you know, she would sing in the market

to the people working at the deli.

And as a kid, I remember being really embarrassed.

- And then when I heard them as an adult,

it was like, why weren't these recorded?

Why weren't these released?

- My grandmother has always been a star.

And one day, it sort of all immediately clicked

like, oh, man, no.

Everybody needs to hear these songs.

- I feel like it's just been an inevitability

that one day, you would get to show people your songs.

And I was always so shocked that it didn't happen

when she was younger.

- I realize this is the time.

And I am the director of the Birmingham Youth

and Young Adult Fellowship Choir

out of Birmingham, Alabama.

- So when I was 18 years old, I started this choir.

It was first supposed to be a fun idea.

We wanted to get together to do a school supply concert

and benefit the children in the community.

But after the concert was over,

we had so many youth walk up and say,

hey, how do I join this choir?

I had to keep it going.

And 10 years later, we're here today.

- Wow.

Why did you decide to enter the show this year?

And what is the big dream?

Tell me.

- So for us, we come from a city that is oftentimes

criticized or kind of put last on the list when you

think about cities in America.

But Birmingham has such a rich history, especially

when it comes to history.

So for me, I grew up at the historic

16th Street Baptist Church.

And a lot of people may know that church

because in 1963, a tragic bombing happened there.

And that is where four little girls were killed.

While that bombing was such a tragic situation,

it played such an instrumental role

in bringing international attention

to the Civil Rights struggle in America

in Birmingham, particularly.

And you know, 60-something years later,

the choir exists.

So we wanted the opportunity to show

that Birmingham, Alabama has some talented young people.

And we want to do something great for the community.
