We're going to search an exploration lease and try and find as many places

that have gold on it as possible.

yeah away from the river it's amazing how different the landscape

is i'm not from around these parts and i'm still getting the hang of looking

for the ground that i'm trying to find the gold in i'm relying pretty heavily

on jackie for this at the moment because you know she's from the palmer and she's

done a lot of similar kind of detecting that little gully up in front is where

i'm heading to

And that's what Jackie's explained to me. She said, basically, when you're out

in this kind of country, walk the gullies first.

If you get onto some gold, follow your nose and see where it leads you.

Because we are on foot out here, you know, we've probably got two to three

days food on us at best before we have to turn around and head back to where we

come from.

So that really puts the pressure on us in terms of making sure that we cover

the ground that we're on the best we can with the time that we have.

We didn't set a huge target for this year because it's an exploration

mission. Ten ounces, just track down the gold, build some relationships.

Hey. Hey, guys, how are we? Hey! Jackie, nice to meet you. Last week, exploration

prospectors Jackie Bazzetti and Kyle Wilson were hired by leaseholder Grant

Farris to locate gold deposits on his leases.

This is all we've done.

Not even two square kilometres, so another 450 square kilometres we've got

to do.

Whoa. The data you find is yours to keep for exchange for just the data.

Now, the pair have travelled over 43 kilometres from Grant's main camp by

boat to reach his most isolated ground.

I think for us to make this mission worthwhile, we need to at least get two

ounces. I think it's going to look better for Grant, the lease owner, as

well. That way it's worth actually putting in a road and getting his

machinery up to mine it.

Well, that's a target.

It's just come out in that first scrape. So I don't know. It's got a bit of a

junky sound to it too.

We have to investigate everything out here.

Oh, beauty.

So that there is probably about a gram's worth of gold.

Gold price is $5,000 an ounce.

You're looking at $150 just for that little piece right there.

There's obviously good gold here. But the thing is about this prospect is we

want to drop as many pins as we can.

So it's obviously come from a higher spot. We do have a lot of sand in the

gully in front of us, but that's just the floodplain alluvium that's come

through. So I can't...

find deep gold that's sunk to the bottom of the sand but i can certainly find

gold that's in amongst all these heavy rocks that are laying on the surface

still i'm still busy trying to get my head around these small alluvial systems

when gold moves down them it's obviously the heaviest of all the elements that

are tracking down these waterways so i'm looking for areas where there might be a

bend in a creek line or a bit of a drop off where some bedrock has been scoured

out and uh i'm hoping that i can pick up some gold that's been left behind from

water movement perfect just have a little bit of a dig

They're super light and easy to move around with. And they're off the ground.

I mean, there's a bit of water around.

We've been told, treat anybody of water that you see like there's a croc in it.

There's pigs, there's buffaloes, there's dingoes.

i wouldn't want to ask for anything else it's great no it's amazing isn't it and

tomorrow we're going to get out there and explore and we already know there's

thinking if you guys are keen, mate, we'll just rip into it. Try and move as

much dirt, find as much gold as humanly possible.

Incredible. Eight years ago, husband and wife Brad and Wendy McGee began their

gold journey, buying their 200-hectare Devil's Cut lease on the outskirts of

Koolgardie in Western Australia.

The survey's been done and it's come up to really high-grade gravel so they can

actually use it for the main roads and there's gravel on about 75% of this

lease. But a company has now offered them a multi-million dollar deal.

for the exclusive rights to mine their lease for high-grade road gravel, a deal

that would prevent them from continuing their hunt for gold.

I did consider moving the gravel myself, but it costs an absolute fortune.

A big mining company, obviously, is nothing to them. They've got billions of

dollars.

Oh, wow. I didn't know you had a latent, huh?

I don't. Another hire?

Now, with just days before the deal goes through, they're leaning on their close

friends Melanie Wood and Alex Stebb to help extract as much gold as possible

before they're locked out for good.

Bigger machines, more money, and that means more roads, more infrastructure.

For roads, you need gravel, and that's exactly what Brad's got.

The gravel is going to be a big payout, but it means walking away from the gold.

I guess the cost of keeping the gold boom going is more important.

Yeah, look, the deal I've made is there's a million tonnes of gravel here,

so I'm getting a royalty for that.

Unfortunately, I don't get a payday until they sell the gravel. You know,

it's not money up front, but it ends up being about $5 million by the time all

of that gravel has been removed.

It was a real hard decision today to sell the lease.

This lease has taught us everything. I mean, it's pretty much taught me how to

be a gold miner.

That's pretty early on in the season so luckily it's happening now because if it

was later on in the season then you know we wouldn't have enough time to find a

new lease and still hit our 100 ounce season target.

Well, I've been looking online, looking at some maps, bought the drone with me.

So I think we can find some better ground using that.

In the far north Queensland gold fields of Georgetown, the gold drifters Darren

Bray and Anthony Stein have called in Darren's brother and drone specialist

Andrew to track down new gold ground on their 75 hectare Titan lease.

So this is where we are.

if you have a look there's heaps of old abandoned mines here there's definitely

gold around here so using a heap of data i'll plug this into an ai and it's spat

out this little map for us and this here is where we want to look at a high

potential shedding zone but there's probably some cat rocks so it's going to

be hard digging well we've got nothing to lose i'll launch the drone up and

i'll see if i can pinpoint a better location and i'll direct you to that

My skill set is more in the background, making sure Darren Ant's got all the

information they need to find the best ground, which is why I'm up here with

the drone. I do have a business where we use the drone technology to measure

volumes of green waste throughout southeast Queensland.

So I'm just getting to the edge of that shedding zone and it's looking really

good. There's good quartz.

Can you imagine the guy that first discovered gold out here back in 1869?

Yeah, they were getting out here on foot, on a donkey, carrying everything

they needed.

Yeah, they used to call Georgetown the poor man's gold field.

And it wasn't because there wasn't gold here, it was because any old-timer could

have come out here with a pick and a shovel and a pan and done pretty well.

Most of the gold was on top of the ground and it was all shallow.

In the late 1800s, Georgetown sat at the heart of far-north Queensland's booming

gold rush.

Prospectors arrived by ship into Cooktown.

before making a gruelling journey more than 600 kilometres inland, chasing gold

in some of the harshest country in Australia.

We'll just pull up here and have a look around, hey?

The focus now is for us to find spots that are viable for us to get some

And once the lease is approved, we can come in and excavate.

The last mining operation we had cost us a fortune.

We went too big, too quick.

This time we are doing things differently.

We're going to really be selective on the ground, make sure it proves, but

hopefully we can make it happen this time.

There's so many diggings and muller keeps, so they must have been under the

gold here.

Usually they don't get it all.

They didn't have technology back then that we have now, so I've got a really

good feeling about this place.

slowly and see if I can pick up everything that's on the ground. But

that's not the mission. The mission that we're on at the moment is to do

exploration. After finding a couple of nugs here in the creek, we're going to

drop a pin on this, give that information to Grant, and we're going to

move on. But it just feels so wrong.

Over 200 kilometres south of Darwin in the remote Northern Territory, Jackie

and Kyle have travelled downriver by boat to locate gold on an unexplored

section of leaseholder Grant Farris' claim.

Alright, so I've found gold in that other gully. Now I've just jumped across

in this one. I want to kind of just track down where it's coming from and

see how many of these are carrying.

Buffalo are just roaming around the wild out here. They might not have even ever

seen a human before.

And if you find yourself on the wrong side of one of these guys, we don't have

much of it for quite a few years, until I met Darren.

He started talking about it. He was very interested.

Trying to find gold in Tasmania is just more challenging.

We've had a pretty good run the last few days. We've gone through a lot of tonnes

of dirt, you know, and we're finding some good gold. We're a well-oiled team

and we're getting through a lot of dirt.
