Hey, I'm Alfred Singh, film and TV actor, stuntman, martial
artist, and 2009 World Wushu Championships gold medalist.
In the next few weeks, I will be traveling to a new destination with a local co-host
to sit down and talk to a martial arts master about life, food, philosophy,
and culture.
After every meal, we will learn three self-defense
techniques from our martial arts master.
Welcome to martial arts and a meal.
Here I am in Los Angeles, California, where I'm going to meet up my friend,
actress and model, Nayan Bay, and we are going to interview
Master Simon Rhee at Baru restaurant in Hollywood.
Master Simon Rhee is a seventh degree black belt in
Taekwondo and a fourth degree black belt in Habquito.
Alright, hey guys, we are here with the
privilege and honor to be with Master Simon Rhee.
One of my favorite movies that he's in is Best is the Best, plays a character day on
where he fights with his brother in so many other movies.
I don't know if you've seen people working for, but he does that fight scene with Mel
Gibson, where they're both like struggling in the truck and then they fall off the
truck and he's like sliding behind him on the freeway.
It's the same.
Do you have any questions?
Favorite color?
Wow.
Favorite food?
Korean.
Okay, and what are your interests outside of martial arts?
Go.
Nice.
That's very Korean too.
Guys, are you guys hungry?
You should get some true orders of art?
Yes, we need that food.
We should definitely order some things.
Let's do it.
Alright, let's do it.
Let's see.
This one is two last dishes.
Okay, this one is kimchi fried rice with bacon.
This one is used in marmos.
Thank you.
This is Chef Matthew Kim, who is also partnered up with Chef Kwong off at Baro
Restaurant and innovative Korean fusion restaurant that's
been reviewed by Johnson Gold as the taste of the future.
Thank you very much.
Yeah, so should we dig in guys?
Get into it.
Okay, best of the best.
I felt like it.
Definitely felt like it.
Because at that time, when all these martial art movies were coming out,
there was nothing that really, really showed what martial artists really go through.
So if you see our movie, there is no sex.
There is no drugs.
There is no revenge.
You see true martial artists training off of this tournament.
Yeah, there's a lot of heart.
Yeah, and true spirit of martial art.
That's what we wanted to show people.
I go up to my brother and give him the medal.
Yeah.
I was supposed to speak Korean to him.
Right.
And Sally Kirkman was supposed to translate.
Right.
So my brother said Simon, you're gonna have to do this in broken English.
Oh, yeah.
By me being able to say it in broken English, would that even be realizing?
I didn't even try to cry, but it just came out naturally.
I know.
I know.
I definitely hear it later.
When I deliver the medal back to him, like, you know, cheers in.
Oh my god.
You know what he's got?
Right now?
Hold on.
I'm like seeing that scene right play out right now.
It was really good.
So many people cry.
Yeah.
We're ready to learn some moves.
Let's go.
All right, let's go.
That just on our way over here.
And we are going to learn three super effective
self-defense moves from Master Simon Rhee.
And we are actually here right over here at his studio.
I am ready.
I'm excited.
I don't know what he's going to teach us, but I'm ready to do this.
Hey, Master Rhee.
I'm Master Rhee.
You guys really get warmed up?
Yeah.
Yeah, let's do it.
Let's do it.
First thing you want to do whenever you get into a confrontation,
you don't want to expose your body to your opponent.
The first thing I like to do is turn my body sideways.
Right.
So if you're right leg, take up the right leg front.
Bring your right knee up and bring your heel towards your glute.
And then from here you can toss the side chin.
Even if you don't break the guy's leg, if you feel
something coming towards your leg, the guy is going to stop.
Right.
He doesn't want to break his leg.
Master Rhee, what would be a number two?
Number two would be like number one, you had a chance to keep your body sideways.
Your body is not exposed.
But sometimes you don't have chance to do that.
Like you're facing your opponent and all of a sudden he's coming at you.
Right.
Step back by creating a distance.
Right.
So what I would do is try to distract him by putting my hand up there.
Right.
So he's like, oh what did he do?
And then... So I definitely feel like that's an effective technique.
And we're going to let Nyan give her a try because I have just a thing right here.
That's Rhee.
Yes.
Technique number three.
You line your knuckles up vertically and you just go straight for the digit of milk.
The reason why I would do that is even if they have a fighting stem like this,
because if you throw like a while swinging punches, they see it coming.
But from here, that's power.
Right.
So what is an advanced technique that even someone that's been training for maybe
five or ten years could take away from this lesson?
So Tekwondo is known for their beautiful tricks.
Right.
So let me show you two tricks.
Okay.
Don't be scared all about using their kicking momentum.
Right.
All the momentum is going to be coming towards me this way.
Got it.
Okay.
So first kick is shuffle roundhouse kick.
So shuffle down.
Spinning roundhouse kick.
So continuing.
Down.
Spinning heel kick.
Continue with the jump spinning roundhouse here again.
Okay.
So I want you to go one, two, three, and four.
That looks way easier when you did it.
I am not a Tekwondo master.
I have zero bell.
Zero bell.
One, two, three.
Last.
Alright thank you, Master E.
It was a it was a great workout.
Thank you for all you tips.
Have fun today for me today.
You guys have great to teach.
Good energy for both of you.
Thank you.
I guess I won't have to work out this month.
Alright, we'll let's go of our stuff.
One final test.
Yeah, I
need that cup again.
And then I was fine.
I was just kind of...
No people were injured in the making of this.
Seriously, thank you so much for being part of the show.
That was awesome.
Alright.
