No, no, no, stay down.
Stay down. You'll be okay.
EMTs are coming.
Sir.
- What? - Come with me.
- What? - I'll help you.
I'm ATF Explosives.
This is an active scene.
I'm working it. I'm working it.
Okay. All right.
- I'm working it. - Jesus, are you okay?
- Hey, Joe. Hey, Joe. - Are you okay?
- Hey. - Listen. There was a second device.
There's about 50 people down.
Oh. Could have been worse.
That car caught most of the blast.
It was... I-I think it was, uh,
TNT...
- uh, fourpenny nails... - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Sir, come with me. We'll get you taken care of. - Listen! You need
to evacuate these wounded!
- I'm trying to work! - Sir, you arethe wounded.
Tell her who I am, Joe.
And... well, we better get me some new gloves.
- I got stuff on these. - That's your blood, Earl.
That's what we're trying to tell you.
Now, come on. Take him, take him, take him.
All right, you start working this, Joe.
- Yeah. - You get that car locked down.
It was fourpenny nails, some kind of...
wire!
You are one lucky fella.
How many of the wounded are law enforcement?
Just about all of them.
Can you turn your arm for me?
Oh, my watch stopped.
At 3:25.
When was the first bomb?
- At 2:50, am I right? - Yeah, I think so.
Hold still, now.
Hey, could we be done?
I got to get out there.
No, not today you don't.
I-I got the superficial stuff, but there's some deep down
that a surgeon needs to get out.
You need to go to the ER...
- Will it kill me? Is it gonna kill me? - No, it's not gonna kill you.
Okay, then thank you very much.
W o uld you please have that metal bagged up?
- It's evidence. - Sir, you don't...
you're not understanding. Sir?
It's all right.
Joe Holliwell!
How long had that first car
- been parked there? - Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Should you be out here?
Yes.
- What time? - Uh...
it's that guy's car.
Got here around 1:00.
Guess there's a methadone clinic.
Around back.
Guy just randomly parked in front of the bomb.
- Wrong place, wrong time. - Well, wrong for him,
but if he hadn't parked there, I'd be...
dead in pieces right now.
The first bomb was targeting the abortion clinic
on the ground floor.
And it looks to me like the second bomb
was meant for the abortion doctor,
who normally parked right here. See?
The perpetrator planted the bomb on a timer,
right at the doctor's space.
He probably meant for the bombs to go off simultaneously,
but somehow screwed up the time.
Doesn't matter either way.
Since it was the doctor's day off, he didn't come in.
Mr. Methadone... stole his spot.
So the bomber missed his target
- and got the Honda instead. - Both bombs were on a timer.
- Big Ben alarm clocks. - And Methadone Man...
parked there about two hours before the first blast.
H-How many people were injured in that first bomb?
The one at the abortion clinic.
Zero. The abortion clinic was closed.
And I'm guessing this first bomb was what,
four or five pounds of TNT?
Four, based on the radius.
Four pounds.
And nobody injured.
Then exactly...
35 minutes later,
the second bomb detonates...
strong enough to shred that Honda.
Hell, I can... smell the nitro.
It's got to be at least...
20 pounds of TNT.
All right, okay, so...
what are you saying?
That second bomb wasn't targeting a parking space.
And that first bomb
wasn't really targeting the abortion clinic.
It was a decoy.
That Honda just happened to ruin his killing field. But look.
It's an L-shaped ambush.
First bomb lures the target in.
The secondbomb's the killer.
Hell...
it's not an accident that the big one
went off 35 minutes after the first.
That is the exact law enforcement response time
for a major incident in suburban Atlanta.
I h ere's never been an L-shaped ambush
on American soil before.
It's too difficult.
Too precise.
So you're saying that three hours ago...
the bomber knew exactly where we would be standing,
who would be there
and when we'd arrive?
To the minute?
Yeah.
If that Honda hadn't randomly parked there...
this would have been the biggest law enforcement bloodbath
in American history.
I think what the bomb is telling us
I s the target wasn't the abortion clinic.
The target was us.
Call you back.
Hey, Kath, uh...
you see that story about that guy in Marietta?
Concealed weapon.
How is that news?
I'm carrying a shotgun in my pants right now.
Yeah.
Sawed-off.
You want to see me?
Yeah.
New assignment.
Serial rapist in Buckhead.
Stepford Wives are all clutching their pearls.
Hmm.
This is Metro.
Give it to Leer. I'm on Jewell.
Well, we're, uh...
moving you off Jewell for now.
Uh, I've been the lead on the Richard Jewell story
since day one.
People are eating it up.
Yeah, it's been awesome, and we're gonna be dining out
on Richard Jewell for the rest of our lives,
but it's been six months.
The world's moved on.
I gave the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
a national profile for the first time in its history,
single-handedly, so...
you-you want me to move off Jewell,
then give me something big, something national.
There isn't enough meat here for my whole team.
Well, we're, uh, breaking up the team.
You're going back to local crime.
I'm better than this Metro shit.
- And you know it, Bill. - This...
"Metro shit," as you call it,
sells papers.
A-And nobody in the...
AJCis "better than" selling papers.
Come on, look around.
Where do you think we are?
Nobody in the AJC
is gonna win a Pulitzer anytime this century.
Including you.
That's so inspirational.
Why don't we print it on our masthead?
We had our moment in the sun.
It's over.
Now, it's time to go to Buckhead and sell some goddamn papers.
Okay, okay,
I-I got it.
The thing is...
would you tell Michelangelo to carve a birdbath?
No.
You'd let him sculpt the goddamn Pietà.
Yeah, totally. Friggin' Sistine Chapel
and shit, you know?
And I predict... You're my witnesses...
Once the newspaper loses its ambition,
it's... it's two steps from disappearing.
Mm-hmm...
mm-hmm...
- mm-hmm. - Mm-hmm.
- Mm! - Ah! - Hey.
I can get you on the scene of the Buckhead thing.
You know, see if the ladies want to talk, too.
Eh, Buckhead can go to hell.
If you want to help, get me something new on Richard Jewell.
Well...
Well, no, no, I-I mean,
t h is is nothing, I mean, it's, like, it's, like,
- less than nothing. - Spit it out, F.I.
All right, look, I-I have this friend,
y o u know, like, a... like, a woman friend,
- Mm. - But-but not, like,
- exclusive or anything. - All right.
- Anyway, she works for 911 dispatch. - Oh!
Shut up. She told me there's-there's a rumor
there was, like, a 911 call the night of the Olympic bombing.
- What? - Yeah.
Yeah, she said they, like, passed it around, 'cause it was,
like, funny or something.
I mean, it's, uh...
it's probably nothing,
but I-I could ask her.
Give me your hand.
Your hand.
Yeah.
That's my home address.
If it's good,
day or night,
you bring it to me.
Next round's on me.
I know criminal charges are forthcoming,
but I don't want to wait.
I'm instructing my lawyer to file a lawsuit
against Richard Jewell for civil damages
and reckless endangerment.
W e 're gonna get justice, no matter what it takes.
I'll take every penny he has...
You see this?
The heck am I supposed to do, Watson?
I don't have any damn money for 'em to take.
I have $80 left in my bank account,
and I'm trapped in my house.
And they're calling me O.J. Simpson!
Like I've been telling you, we hit back.
We get out there and get on TV and take these assholes on.
I can't even open the curtains.
I go on TV, they'll cut my head off.
Come on, Richard.
I got to go.
All right.
D o not open that door while I am out here.
It's dinner. Mom.
Relief should begin as early as Thursday...
Oops.
I am 60 years old.
I worked hard all my life.
Why is this happening to me, Richard?
Huh? What did I do to deserve this?
Look at me!
Watson's figuring it out.
We will keep our heads down and...
Watson doesn't know what the hell he's doing!
He's a know-nothing who wants to be a fool hero
and get his name in the paper, like someone else I know.
- And how did that work out for you? - What is that supposed
to mean, Mom?! You think this is my fault?!
The-the FBI came into my house
and they stole all my good pans
and my-my Crock-Pot
so that I have to eat this shit off the floor!
They don't do that to people who did nothing, Richard!
No, no, no. Don't-don't answer that.
- I changed the number again. - Don't-don't answer it.
- It's Watson! - Don't answer it!
Only Watson has the new number!
You need to kill yourself, you fat piece of shit,
before I do it for you. I'm gonna come in there tonight
and I'm gonna kill you. Then I'm gonna shove my dick
down your mother's throat...
- Oh, my... -
Where you going?
Richard, where you going?
We need food. I'm getting food. I'm not a prisoner.
- No. Please, please don't. Please don't... - I didn't do anything wrong.
And these guys are all out there shopping for food.
I haven't had a goshdarn vegetable in weeks.
That's the guy...
Thought you could blow up
- the Olympics, you fat fuck? - Sir, I'm buying food. I'm...
Leave him alone!
The kids are in the car! Come on! Leave him!
- - Come on.
Leave him!
What the hell happened to you?
M y whole life, I wanted to be one of those guys.
I w anted to see something wrong and come to the rescue. But...
...a dozen FBI agents just stood there and watched
while some guy beat me up.
And I'm on the ground and I'm not fighting back
and they're just... sitting there, watching,
like I'm lower than a dog.
Everyone's telling me, "Keep your head down
and wait for the system to straighten it all out."
And I keep my head down, and it tells everyone it's okay
to kick it. Enough!
I'm done!
Cavalry ain't coming!
Ain't nobody gonna do a damn thing
to clear my name except me!
Today, I start
- fighting back! - Yes.
Yes! That's what I want to hear!
Tomorrow morning, we walk into court and we sue everyone.
I h e media, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
Tom Brokaw, the FBI!
They are trampling all over your rights.
We'll sue the hell out of 'em.
I don't want to sue anybody.
I'm not in it for the money.
I'm not trying to get revenge.
I just want my life back,
my ordinary, normal life.
No, that's why we have to sue,
to get normalcy back.
Nobody is gonna back down,
retract a story,
apologize, clear you
unless they're forced to.
D o you know why we still have habeas corpus and due process,
w h y the government hasn't just tossed
the whole damn Constitution aside?
- No. - It's because a few
brave people took it on themselves,
throughout the history of this country,
to stand up to the powers that be.
And they used the justice system
to forcethem to do the right thing.
And that is how we are going to be sure
that the next heroic security guard
doesn't have to go through what you went through.
Okay.
Let's do it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's a corkscrew in the kitchen.
911. What's your emergency?
I planted a bomb in Centennial Park.
You have 30 minutes.
You want?
I'm taking a break.
I just got this man called,
said there's a bomb about to go off
in 30 minutes in Centennial Park.
Oh, Lord, child.
One minute. Can you give me the address of Centennial Park?
I ain't got no address for Centennial Park.
What y'all think I am?
Is it good enough?
Can you help me find...
- Good enough? - ...Centennial Park?
It's gangbusters.
Mornin'.
- Morning. - My notes on the Buckhead thing.
Mm-hmm.
It's gonna be great.
Talked with one of the victims.
She's willing to talk with us and give us an exclusive.
It's like crime andhuman interest.
And there's the class thing, too, obviously.
Good work.
You can take away my team, fine.
I don't need 'em.
But you can't take me off Richard Jewell.
- What the hell, Kath? We had... - Listen to that tape,
then tell me Jewell is tapped out.
I've been doing this a long time,
I o ng enough to know when a story is over
and when it isn't.
That 911 call is just the beginning.
Oh, and-and rapist in Buckhead. I'll-I'll drop it
at Leer's desk...
down in Metro.
Hey, honey. Look at this.
I found it in Sandy Springs.
I've never seen this before.
It's four strands of wire
held together by a strut of some kind.
It's steel.
Nonconductive, so it wouldn't have been insulated.
But... it's got this burnt,
melted plastic all over it,
like some kind of green-colored PVC.
I can't figure it out.
Where does it go?
What's it for?
Well, how the heck would I know?
I don't know.
Thought you might have some ideas, or...
Maybe you'd enjoy helping me figure it out.
This... is my love language.
Oh, for Pete's sakes.
It is.
- What the heck are you talking about? - It is.
I read an article about it.
There are five different kinds of love languages.
And my love language is...
Oh.
Hey, you leave Redbook in the bathroom,
you better be prepared to accept the consequences.
Mm.
I love you, Earl.
But you are nuts.
Yeah, I'm trying.
I know you are.
Bless your heart.
- Oh. - Oh.
I'm sorry.
That's-that's Joe.
We got another one.
Well, where are you?
Otherside Lounge.
It's a lesbian nightclub.
Small bomb went off inside.
Nobody seriously hurt, but it's TNT,
Big Ben, 12-volt lantern battery.
- I think it couldbe... - It is.
Shit. I'm on it. Bye.
You need to double your standoff distance
- to 25 meters. Now. - Well, the area's secure.
No it's not. There's a second bomb.
So get the hell back now.
Now. Go. Run!
Oh, God.
Oh, goddamn it.
Let's go! Let's go!
Joe Holliwell?!
Joe Holliwell!
Oh, Jesus, Joe.
Five people injured.
Nobody killed.
Well, that's down to you; you done good.
I learned from the best.
What you got here?
Same as Sandy Springs.
That damn double helix.
Still don't know what it's for.
Eyewitness says he saw someone by the dumpster.
The guy was lying down, stood up after the bomb went off
and just ran.
Just a homeless guy.
Bomb must've scared him off.
Mm-hmm.
Positive for TNT.
Yeah. He was here.
Damn.
And look.
He couldn't even see the nightclub,
only his real target.
He's hunting us.
And I don't think he's gonna quit.
I don't think he's gonna quit till he kills one of us.
Sandy Springs...
Otherside Lounge.
And where next?
Hell, I don't know.
- Is that the legal limit? - 25 feet.
Just about.
Don't do it, mama!
Don't do it. Your baby loves you!
You have a choice.
You can choose love.
Easy, Minzor, it's just the nurse.
I don't know how she does this every day.
She gets paid to kill babies.
And she seems nice.
Anyway, you keep it safe.
- You filling in for Dave? - Yup.
- You filling in for Nancy? - Yup.
She just had her baby.
We are such suckers.
- Tell me about it. - It's not too late!
You don't have to murder babies today.
The human foghorn is back, huh?
- It takes all kinds, doesn't it? - Mm.
Ah, Minzor's not a bad guy.
Hey, Sande?
You see that there?
Ugh.
Will you take a look?
I can't deal with any more rubber "severed limbs"
after last week.
It's like, as soon as the Halloween stuff
goes on clearance, all the crazies come out.
Hmm. Nothing, I guess.
Maybe the landscapers came?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Emily. Emily.
Hang on.
Please, don't die.
Help.
Help!
Don't die, Emily.
Emily, it's gonna be okay.
It's gonna be okay, I promise.
You think I did this?
You think this is pro-life? This?
This is not pro-life. This is death.
Sheriff. Holliwell, Embry, ATF.
Did you check for a secondary device?
Yeah, the whole radius.
- Nothin'. - Hmm. Okay.
How's the nurse?
In critical but she'll live.
You need to push it back.
Push it back! Go.
Look here.
It's him.
Yeah. But no secondary this time.
And no timers.
He liked to watch.
Earl.
Check this out.
Boot marks.
And they're fresh.
Young Holliwell.
H e's close.
Arrogant son of a bitch.
Oh. Ah.
Oh, look here.
Oh, God.
Remote trigger.
I h at's why he didn't use a secondary or a timer.
Weird that he left it for us to find, though.
Well, like I said,
arrogant son of a bitch.
But he's evolving.
Learning.
First two didn't kill anybody.
He's getting better.
So instead of an L-shaped ambush using timers,
he made one bomb and triggered it himself.
So there would be no doubt of the outcome.
Well, you can go tell the locals to turn that protester loose.
The target wasn't the clinic.
It was the cop.
Boom.
He wanted to see his face.
Brennan.
Need you.
- I'll be back. - All right.
You're taking a break from Whitewater.
We got an abortion bombing in Birmingham.
One local police officer dead.
- Jesus. - Guy's a serial bomber.
Did two others outside of Atlanta.
The gay club and another abortion clinic.
It's a high-publicity, hot-button issue.
W h ite House is calling for a full-court press.
The dead cop makes it a national priority.
He's crossing state lines.
- That makes him ours. - Exactly.
We got five different agencies tripping over each other.
That's why I want you to get down there,
clear the field and handle this
- like you handled Olympic Park. - Yes, sir.
Um, I'd like Agent Knox back if I can have her.
Whatever resources you want, you get.
We need a quick win here. The White House is watching.
So is the dead cop's family.
Knox. Knox!
When you're done,
with me.
Got some ass for you to kick.
Through nine inches
of concrete here
but a plastic container on level ground.
Does that make sense?
So, now the FBI show up.
Just in time to scoop the credit.
We're all on the same side.
Oh, yeah.
Now, we got several leads, including
- make and model of the car... - Interview's over.
Thank you. Thank you.
- Get off my scene. - You look here, you are a guest
in my jurisdiction.
If I want to talk to the local reporters,
I'm entirely within my right.
The man who did this is listening to the news right now.
You want to tell him that we have his license plate
so he can scrub his truck and disappear? No.
We don't compromise a federal manhunt
by preening for the cameras,
and we don't use dead cops to get our faces on TV.
All right, listen up!
This is now an FBI investigation.
Everyone else needs to leave.
- And thank you for your help. - Other side of the tape,
- please. We need you guys out of here now. - Goodbye!
I I sten, we're federal agents. We've been working this case,
- and we have a right to stay and finish our investigation. - Hey.
Hey, hey.
What we're looking for is not here, anyway.
Let's go. Let's go. We're going.
Thank you.
I don't know what you're looking for.
Except for the remote trigger,
everything we've found is consistent
with Otherside and Sandy Springs.
Plastic container, pipes wrapped with nails, TNT.
There's nothing unaccounted for.
You don't get that spray cone
with the components we already found.
Now, that guy changed his tactics
so he'd be sure to kill that cop.
The spray cone tells us
that he changed his bomb construction.
We got to figure out how.
I e ams have canvassed every inch of ground.
200 yards in every direction.
There's nothing left to find.
White house.
Brown trim.
"For sale" sign outside.
Check up top.
- You can bring my bag. - Oh!
Oh!
No way.
Well,
there's an answer.
Shit.
I've seen a hell of a lot of pipe bombs in my career.
Do you know how many of those
used a steel directional plate?
Three.
One was in 1960... something
in a Florida swamp.
And one was right here in front of us.
And the other was six months ago
at Centennial Olympic Park.
Looks like the same gauge of steel.
Double thickness.
Well,
we're gonna have to get the...
bomb over to the lab to be sure.
But...
Yeah. Visually, it's the same.
Are you telling me that the man who bombed Sandy Springs,
the Otherside Lounge and right down there...
was the same man who bombed the Olympic Games?
No, I'm not telling you that.
But it looks a hell of a lot like the bomb
is telling you that.
Loud and clear.
Well, there's no way
Richard Jewell planted this bomb.
Or Sandy Springs or Otherside Lounge.
He's been under FBI surveillance the whole time.
Yeah.
W h at are the odds he had a partner?
Okay, who-who's still out there
and did these attacks?
A partner.
A partner that Jewell never contacted, telephoned,
or communicated with before or since the Games
and who the FBI has been unable to turn up
after months of interviewing
every single person Richard Jewell ever met or knew.
Possible. Not likely.
That means if you're right about this directional plate
and it's a match,
they got the wrong man.
It's worse than that.
If we're right,
as soon as the FBI put Jewell on the evening news,
they gave the real bomber a free pass.
That's for me.
I'm setting a big interview at ABC
to announce our lawsuits.
Hi, Marsha.
Hi, Watson.
I'm here with Richard Jewell.
We're just putting the finishing touches on our suits,
and we're gonna be walking them into court tomorrow
if you want to get some B-roll.
Actually, I'm calling to see if you or Richard
have a comment on the big story?
On the...
The one that just broke in theAJC?
Uh...
From theAtlanta Journal-Constitution today,
an explosive new revelation
- from Kathy Scruggs, the journalist who... - Let me get back to you.
...originally broke the Richard Jewell story.
Scruggs is reporting that Jewell called in a bomb threat
just minutes before the detonation
of the bomb he planted.
Scruggs has uncovered
previously unreleased tapes that reveal Jewell
telling 911 operators that,
"There is a bomb in Centennial Park."
The bomber called 911 before the bomb went off.
- The FBI never mentioned it? - Why the hell
did we not know about this?
Law enforcement experts suggest that Jewell made the call
to gather a larger audience
for his so-called heroism.
Richard Jewell was obsessed with law enforcement
and obsessed with becoming famous.
What's especially sick is
that he made that call so that law enforcement officers
w o uld come running towards the bomb,
so they could see him playing hero.
He cared more about his own fame and glory
more than he cared about the lives
of those officers, agents and investigators.
He was trying to get famous, and he didn't care
how many people had to die
to feed his own arrogance and ego.
They're back.
It was from this very pay phone the bomber set the stage
for his sick and deadly performance.
We now know
that telephone records show an anonymous 911 call
was received just before 1:00 a.m.
- Did he say that was the exact phone? - Yes.
What does it matter?
What lies are they telling today?
I'm gonna add that into our lawsuit.
Oh, God.
They...
They're wrong.
They what?
They're wrong, and I think I can prove it.
