[Indistinct chatter]

-But our numbers are double what they were a few weeks ago.

We keep letting these newcomers take all our resources.

-Marisol? -Is my wife.

I'm looking for her parents.

Never came back.

-Ground's not stable. I need everyone off the street.

The pantry -- we need to save the food.

Let's go.

-[Yelling]

[Coin rattling]

-Grab as much as you can, as fast as you can,

then fall back to the apartment.

[lightly somber music]

[angry crowd yelling nearby]

[whistles]

Look, the rationing will only have to last a few months, okay?

-Months? Months?! -[crowd yelling]

Whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

[Renata] The farmland that you chose to clear

is beginning to sprout.

And with Mason Dillard's guidance,

we are creating a giant vertical food chain

across the street that will be self-sustaining.

Now, yes, it will take time for the turkey population--

[Chris] You should've started that

before you brought us all here.

[crowd yelling]

Maybe, maybe, okay, but we are here now, okay?

And, look, Maggie and I,

we can help you build your own personal pigeon traps

and rat traps.

[crowd yelling]

[Woman] We did not follow that light to eat rats!

[Man] Wait, wait, wait, wait, so

four cans of food and a box of pasta

and whatever rodents we can catch,

that's what we get for a week?

What do you get, huh?

[Renata] I emptied out my entire kitchen

and donated everything to the effort.

I don't plan on taking any rations.

[crowd murmuring aggressively]

[Maggie] Guys! Hey! Listen.

This is nobody's fault.

Nobody asked for it.

And I know that we have all had weeks

where we wish we had this much to eat.

Nobody is going to starve.

I promise.

We all just need to pull together, okay?

We can do this.

[Woman] Fuck that, give me my food!

[crowd yelling]

[Luis] Look at the light, please.

Look, I, I saw her.

Stealing a whole can of pinto beans

between her bosoms.

And then tried to blame me for it.

"Bosoms." Come on, that's funny.

We don't know what they've lost.

Just that they're scared of losing more.

That's all any of us can do now.

Try not to break the same way twice.

We'll quadruple security

before we give out next week's rations.

Yeah, if they don't all kill each other before then.

You were right.

You convinced me to bring these people here

because you knew that, no matter who they had become

in this world, once they knew that there was enough,

once they knew that they didn't need to be scared anymore,

that they would act like decent people,

and they did.

But now they're scared again.

I know it.

[Renata] We don't turn this around quickly,

this is all gonna fall apart.

We need to get them more food.

We don't have any more.

Not if we want to push through until the harvest.

[Renata] Well, we need to do something.

Anything.

I have an idea.

If we can't give people more food,

we can at least make them think less about the fact

that they don't have it.

We can give them electricity around the clock.

But to do that, we gotta keep the tanks full.

I talked to Solmari.

She can build pens in the subway tunnels,

line them with turnstiles,

so the walkers can get in, but they can't get out.

It's gonna take a while for that to fill up, though.

In the meantime, we need a lot of walkers

in a contained space

so that we can wrangle 'em and get 'em back to the tanks.

It's one way we can settle everybody back down.

No, I get it, I do, but it just seems

a little manipulative.

I don't know. If it keeps the peace,

I think I'd call it good leadership.

There must be hundreds of walkers in here.

How are we gonna do this?

Well, we're gonna need help.

[Renata] [sighs] I don't know.

This seems extremely dangerous.

Is it worth losing people?

Look, if we get the right kind of people,

we're not gonna lose anyone.

[whistling]

[loud thud] Oh!

[Renata] Oh shit! Damn.

[growling]

We'll have to watch out for that.

[theme music]

[Negan] Alright, I see where you're going with this.

It's like what the great King Arthur once said.

If you wanna control your people,

then you give 'em bread and you give 'em the circuses.

Now, since we clearly know

that you are running low on the bread,

you best be whipping out the circus tickets

'cause the folks, they be wanting

their VCRs and their vibrators.

Keeps their mind off their empty stomachs.

[Dillard] Hey y'all, sorry, I was under the impression

that vibrators ran on batteries. Is that not true?

Oh no, you would be wrong, Dillard.

Some take some serious horsepower.

[Dillard] What are those speeds then?

Virgin, housewife, and porn star power drill?

-[laughs] -[Maggie] Really? Seriously?

For the love of God, can we please focus, please?

By the way, if you were coming through,

trying to pull some deadies,

can you kindly stay the eff away from Cockenspiel?

We did not come here, looking for... it.

Hey, if it is corpses you are looking for,

just give me a list of names.

No. Thank you. We have the walkers,

but we need help rounding them up.

Oh.

Are you looking to us to bail you out?

Because my man, Dillard, here, being the gentleman he is,

he already got you hooked up with a starter pack of turkeys,

so that is a very spunky ask.

Gobble, gobble.

Well, maybe Maggie can make you

a tuna casserole as payment.

[light suspenseful music]

[Cockenspiel growling]

You know, I did hear that her tuna casserole

is to die for.

Alright, we choosing this team or what?

[Renata] Okay, so how many people do we need total?

[Maggie] Twelve, at least.

We need them strong, but nimble enough

that they have each other's backs.

What makes you think they'll do that?

I wish I could say civic pride. But double the rations?

Double the rations.

Look, for guys like Dillard and me,

the action is the juice.

For this group of people, that is just a start.

You could offer them first dibs.

Just first dibs on whatever it is we find in there.

It's called scavenger's rights.

Like in Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.

Yeah, like that.

[lightly thrilling music]

Okay, and you show them respect,

otherwise they won't respect you.

Don't worry about that.

Uh huh, and we need Kelsey.

[Dillard] Uh huh, Kelsey Bea.

Mm, yeah, Kelsey. She's former New Babylon.

[Dillard] Word is they named her Killer Kelsey

'cause she used to volunteer for hanging duty.

Apparently, she made a smooth transition

from the noose to the knife.

So add her in.

Okay. What about, uh, Reverend Anthony?

[Renata] Oh, no, Anthony is a lunatic.

[Dillard] But he did tell me

he has a close, personal relationship with God,

so that might come in handy.

Amen.

Bennie.

[Dillard] Backdraft Bennie. My man.

[Negan] Ex-FDNY.

He knows his shit, knows the city.

Big, big creative mind when

it comes to personal protection, Mag.

We gotta have Mesing. She knows how to handle herself.

[Negan] The cook?

[Maggie] The Chef, thank you very much.

Never met a cleaver she didn't like.

What about The Bear?

[Negan] Three-leg Radomir.

[Renata] Oh, come on, you guys.

That man only cares about two things:

himself and his... You know--

He's an artiste, you guys, okay?

He's, he's the Fellini of the flesh.

Pollock of porn.

The Degas of doing it.

Just hold off on Radomir, please.

I'm gonna ask Fabian.

I want to, I do. I really do.

I just, um... [sighs]

It just sounds too risky.

And if something happened to me,

I mean, my wife and my kids, what am I gonna do with them?

-I mean-- -Yeah, no, I, I understand.

Wait, wait, wait.

I heard what you said yesterday.

About all of us pulling together.

I wanna help.

Now, with all of you gone,

I'm happy to pull double guard duty

in the armory.

Okay.

-Mm? Hm. Mm-hmm. -[Renata] Yeah. Thanks.

Yeah.

[chatter]

Sol, you do not have to do this.

I designed it. I'm going up there.

[sighs] Okay, fine. [speaking Spanish]

Maggie, you feel okay

going into battle with this group?

I know some of these might be the kind of people

you were worried about when we turned on that light.

But they are exactly who we need for this.

[Renata] Well...

[Renata claps] Alright, everyone. Listen up.

We got a lot of work to do.

[Maggie] This is not your typical walker wrangling, okay?

One false move and somebody is getting bit.

They are packed in here

as tight as hell and rarin' to get out.

So popping these doors directly is a no-go.

That is where you come in.

The key is the diversion.

We're gonna draw them away from the doors,

give us space to wrangle them,

five, six at a time,

without the whole freaking herd rushing out at once.

It's gonna be slower, I guarantee you,

but it will be safer.

[clears throat] [whistles] Splat.

And if you hear whistling,

please find cover ASAP.

-We clear? -[belches]

-[Bennie] Gotcha. -[glass clinking]

Well, thank you, Ms. Maggie.

Everybody, please give Ms. Maggie a big thank you.

[tapping and light banging]

[Negan] See, this? This is a plan.

A good plan, and good plans are important.

Take it from me, I have been on the shit side

of some deviously good plans,

but there is one thing that is more important

than any goddamn plan.

[sucks teeth] Balls.

[tense music]

Now, despite what some of you may think,

everyone has balls.

See, I am not talking about the balls

that live inside your dick sack.

No, I am talking about the balls

that live here in your heart.

I am talking about courage.

The courage to get shit done.

Now, if you're too chickenshit to get the shit done

that needs to be done,

well, then shit's just gonna stay shit.

So get your shit together,

say your prayers, kids,

and if you not tight with the man upstairs,

then you will say your prayers to me

because me and God, we have one thing in common.

We despise cowards.

[banging and applause]

[tense music]

I'm guessing this isn't your first suicide mission.

No, not hardly.

Yeah, me neither.

It gets me thinking, though, no matter what.

Hey, that Renata is pretty impressive, huh?

I worked with a lot of loose cannons in my day,

but she's always got it tied down real tight.

You know?

-She does. -Yeah.

She ever ask about me?

No.

It's cool.

[walkers growling]

We were surviving. We were surviving.

We weren't starving, and when we were,

we weren't trapped on a goddamn island.

We could've made it work.

But then Maggie,

dear old sweet Maggie...

Maggie had to have some kind of...

I don't know, better idea.

And she fucked it all up.

I know what everyone thinks of me now.

That I'm dogshit.

Because I tried to feed my family.

Family who won't even look at me now.

I wonder how Maggie would feel about that.

[Negan] Hmm.

Well, I'll tell you this.

I don't think Maggie has feelings.

[Fabian] Hmm.

But don't be shitting in the sink on this, pal, you know?

Renata is the one making you do the whole song and dance.

No, no, no. Renata is the symptom, okay?

Maggie is the disease.

Stupid woman always thought she was right

about every goddamn thing you could be wrong about.

Never should've followed her goddamn lead.

Well, I'll tell you what.

You know what I'm happy about?

I am happy that someone feels the same way I do.

Would you believe it if I told you

that Maggie stabbed me in the back?

And I am not talking figuratively.

I mean, she literally stuck me like a pig.

Typical.

[Negan] You know, when I was a kid,

my favorite uncle, Uncle Scooter,

God bless his soul,

see, he taught me a word

to use for women just like Maggie.

And I sure as hell bet that you know that word.

Oh, hell, yeah, brother.

That Maggie is one hell of a fucking--

[glass shatters]

[Cockenspiel & Titicaca snarling]

You are dogshit.

You are the shit that a dog shits out

after it eats its own goddamn shit!

You think you're gonna kill Maggie?

Answer me! Tell me the truth!

Negan!

-[Titicaca growls angrily] -Negan, put the gun down.

This asshat wants to kill Maggie.

Oh, and, by the way, you, too.

[Renata] Fabian, is that true?

[Fabian] No! Bullshit! He's lying!

You don't know that.

-I know a killer. -[Fabian] I swear!

[Negan] Not one more word.

But you don't have to be one.

Call it a hobby.

One that I'm sorely out of practice on.

Negan, this is not a joke.

No, you are the joke!

The Croat, he was a goddamn lunatic,

but he was right about one thing.

You and your people? Soft as kitten shit.

One last chance, Negan.

This is not how we do things.

It is exactly how I do things.

We do not kill.

[gun fires]

[dramatic music]

[Titicaca growls angrily]

[dramatic music]

You are coming with me, Negan!

You are under arrest!

[chuckles] You are out of your natural mind.

I will put down any soul

who even thinks about locking me in a cage again.

Negan, you think you can fuck with me?

You are a pathetic, broken man.

I'm coming back.

With people and guns.

And you will come with us.

Hey, kittenshit.

Bring your army.

-[Titicaca snarling] -[door slams]

[dramatic music]

[Titicaca snarling]

[Titicaca snarling]

[dramatic music]

[Mysterious music plays]

[Whistling in distance]

[Gun clatters] -I'm warning you!

-Would you like a reading?

You've been here before?

Not in this life than in another.

-Maggie!

-I'm Negan.

-Maggie.

-Nice to meet you, Margaret.

[Mysterious music continues]

-What is happening in my bar?

-Well, I'm glad you asked.

-Okay. -Follow me.

-How often in the "Walking Dead" universe

do you get to shoot a scene

where everybody's having fun together and enjoying life?

-It's just a party.

♪♪

-Here's to Dillard. -And the dead squad!

-There were people on the stripper pole.

[Cheering]

There was fake booze being drank.

-We get drunk together,

and that is one of my favorite scenes.

Negan? Negan?

[Laughter]

-She was a fun-loving teenager once

who loved to have a good time.

This is a way for us to show that there's a lot more freedom

for who Maggie can be.

-I feel like Maggie deserves to smile.

-And action!

-They had a whole karaoke thing, didn't they?

-I do love karaoke. I do love to sing.

-And I'm a big fan of karaoke.

-I think my go-to song is Madonna, "Like a Prayer."

-When the vocs are on point, I'll drop some "Starman."

When they're not, I'll go "China Girl."

-We didn't rehearse at all and just jumped off the cliff

when the cameras were rolling. -[Whistling]

-It was really fun.

-The Dead City Band is the next step.

-Raul plays bass. I play the guitar.

-I'd be in it. I'd do all the instruments.

I can't play all the instruments.

I'm just saying, if this is a fantasy world...

-I wonder if Jeffrey plays anything.

[Laughs] That would be amazing.

-Uh, I'm gonna go with lead triangle.

-I was gonna say that. -Right?

-I could do -- I could do like a Will Ferrell,

"Saturday Night Live" skit. -Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

-"More triangle!"

-More triangle, yeah. -More cowbell.

-It was a great way

for the whole "Dead City" cast to just take their hair down

and celebrate instead of worrying.

[Cheers and applause]

-So fun!
