Ladies and gentlemen, the Beach Boys!

world.

631 Long Island!

with Jimmy Fallon, everybody.

Thank you for being here. It's a big night tonight.

Big night.

The Beach Boys in the house tonight!

Oh, my God.

So exciting.

We got a big, big show.

Oh, I love you, too.

Hey,

guys, here's some 2012 election news.

Yesterday on CBS, Newt Gingrich said that it would be inconceivable for Mitt

Romney to choose him as a running mate.

And today, Romney issued a statement saying, yep.

Huge movie news this week, and the Avengers beat Harry Potter and the

Deathly Hallows for the best opening of all time.

Giant. Giant movie. Giant.

You can tell Harry's bummed out. Today, I saw him on the street drinking

butterbeer out of a paper bag, and I was like... Zoloftikas Prozactium.

Everyone's talking about this. After just one term in office, French

President Nicolas Sarkozy lost his reelection bid because he was unable to

fix his nation's economy.

Or as Obama put it... Uh-oh.

Yeah, boy.

Hey,

this weekend was the Kentucky Derby. Did you guys watch the Kentucky Derby?

A lot of people refer to it as the most exciting two minutes in sports.

not to be confused with the other exciting two minutes of sports, you

know, when Tim Tebow loses his virginity. And that's going to be

exciting. That's going to be exciting.

We're always looking forward to that.

Always looking forward to that.

Listen to this. I read about a man who's trying to give up the Internet for an

entire year, which explains why today he posted that Facebook status, already

gone two days without the Internet.

That's right. A man's trying to go a whole year without using the Internet,

which can only mean one thing. He's never seen this.

70 million views, by the way, on YouTube. It's insane.

7-0. 70 million.

70 million. Is Nyan Cat a cat that's in a loaf of bread? I don't know what it

is, a Pop-Tart? With a rainbow behind it.

That's all it is for, like, five minutes.

With, like, 24 big... Can we show it again? Let's do it again.

Alright, okay.

It's a Pop-Tart, right?

Pop-Tart. Thank you for the clarification, sir.

It is a Pop-Tart. Now it makes sense.

Oh, okay. Of course. Oh, my God, yeah. It's a cat flying in space in a Pop

-Tart. Yeah.

Thank you, sir.

Hey, this isn't good, you guys. Former Lost star Matthew Fox was arrested for

drunk driving last week.

Yeah, the cop pulled him over and was like, hey, have you been drinking?

Also, does the island represent purgatory?

I mean, like, what's the deal with the skeletons below the waterfall? I mean,

what was... That's right, Matthew Fox from Lost was pulled over for drunk

driving. When police gave him a breathalyzer, he blew up .4, 8, 15, 16,

23, and 42.

Lost fan.

J.J. Abrams will laugh at that.

Check this out. In an interview this weekend, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek

hinted that he might retire in two years.

Or as he put it, born in 1940, this game show host wants to sit around in his

bathrobe eating ice cream.

And finally, I saw that Ryan Seacrest just put his house on the market for $11

.9 million.

Yep, the house has five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and 6,000 mirrors.

We have a great show tonight. Give it up for the...

Oh, you guys.

It's a big show tonight. Big show for us.

You guys, you know we put out this book, right? Thank You Notes. It came out

Funny jokes.

Well, I'm happy to announce... Thank You Note...

Very exciting. Thank You Notes 2 comes out May 22nd. It costs $13.99 or

something. What is it?

It's a rip-off.

$13.99. Well, it's $15.50 in Canada. I would not pay that. I would go there

because there's parity with the dollar right now.

You know what I'm saying? If you want to save some dough, go to Canada and pick

up Thank You Notes 2. But it's totally worth $13.99. I wouldn't pay over $14

for it.

Because watch this.

There you go. Of course it doesn't work.

The thank-you notes. Music, please, in the book. So you can... All of them?

What's that? All of the books can have the music? No, only the first 100,000 or

something. Or the first 50,000 or something. So it's a limited-edition

deal. That's why it's 13 American bucks.

I wouldn't pay any more than 13. Don't. Do not.

If you pre-order it, you can probably get it for, like, 12.

12. On Zahn?

If you don't do it on Zahn... No one calls Amazon Zahn.

But, look, we're excited about it. Thank You Notes 2 comes out May 22nd. Go pick

it up, you guys.

We have a huge show tonight. Very great actress, very talented, very beautiful.

Jennifer Connelly is here tonight.

Nothing happening around.

We've already heard a song from the one and only The Beach Boys, you guys. I got

a new one!

That's why God made the radio.

That's their new record.

It's everybody.

It's the original Beach Boys line up back together for the first time in

forever. I'm just so excited to hear. I'm honored to hear they sound so good.

It's just awesome.

We're going to also talk to Brian Wilson and Mike Love later on in the show.

Talk to them about... So excited to have those guys here. So honored.

Guys, you know there's a lot of bad news out there in the world, but here at Late

Night, we always try to find the silver lining.

So with that in mind, it's time for a segment we call On the Bright Side.

-♪ On the bright side, on the bright side, on the bright side!

-♪ Here's how it works. I'm gonna give you the cold, hard facts that we've

pulled from some of the world's top news sources, and then I'll give you the

silver lining, okay?

A new book is claiming that O.J. Simpson is innocent.

On the bright side, it will be shelved under fiction.

A man is suing BMW after one of their motorcycles reportedly caused him to get

an erection for 20 straight months.

On the bright side, he finally learned how to drive stick.

Fans. Fans are criticizing the logo that Jay-Z designed for the Brooklyn Nets.

On the bright side, he's finally got 100 problems.

Even 100.

Even 100.

Yeah. The logo won.

Thanks to childhood obesity, American kids are lagging behind other nations in

the sport of soccer.

On the bright side, American kids are undefeated in the sport of seesaw.

Ryan Seacrest will be covering the London Olympics this summer for NBC.

On the bright side, if you want to skip to the highlights, just look in his

hair.

There are growing concerns about the level of privacy on Facebook.

On the bright side, there's a way to post all of your information online

without anyone ever seeing it. Join Myspace.

You found a pubic hair on the toilet seat in your bathroom.

On the bright side, you now remember how to write a cursive Z.

There you have it, guys.

That was on the bright side. And stick around.

We'll be right back with Dennis, your hat and gloves on.

Welcome back, everybody.

Time to take off your thinking caps. It's time for Dance Your Hat and Gloves

Off. Here we go.

Welcome to Dance Your Hat and Gloves Off, Release the Mirror Ball.

Very smooth.

This is the game where we put hats and gloves on people and make them dance

until they fall off. Higgins, who's on the dance floor tonight?

Well, Jimmy, coming to the stage are Greg Hadditch, Maureen Kelly, and Alex

Simmons.

Get ready to dance your hat and or gloves off.

How you doing, buddy? Nice to see you.

Hey, nice to see you, buddy.

Very, very good. Looks like a fine, fine dance crew tonight. What is your name?

Greg.

Maureen.

Alex. Whoa.

Sorry. That was loud.

Hello?

What's up?

Alex?

Maureen. Greg.

Maureen. Greg.

Maureen. Greg.

Maureen. Alex.

Alex. Greg.

All right.

You guys ready to do this?

You guys ready to do this? Yes. All right, what about you, Tone Loke? Let's

do it. All right.

Let's bring out the hats and bring out those gloves.

Oh, yeah. There they are.

Wool, rubber, yellow.

Perfect.

Here.

Thank you very, very much. Just start giving it out. You can put them on right

now, my friend.

Hey, thank you for helping.

There you go right there. You put those on.

Thank you, pal.

There you go.

All right, very good.

Make sure they're on good and tight. No smurfing of the hats.

Yeah, you're a little guilty.

Take your time just putting them on. Make sure they're all on there good. It

looks good. You guys look like radioactive dishwashers. That's great.

All right, now look.

Here are the rules. When I say dance, the roots will start playing a funky

disco jam, and you'll have 15 seconds to fling off your hat and gloves.

Scoring a simple one point for each glove you get off, two for the hat.

Whoever gets the most points wins the grand prize. And, oh, what a prize it

is. Higgins?

Well, Jimmy, tonight's winner will be taking home $300 folded origami style

and displayed in this beautiful, ornate frame.

The perfect centerpiece to any room in your house. It's beautiful, it's classy,

and for some reason, it's now only worth about 50 bucks.

Jimmy?

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Higgins, you love origami, don't you?

As a matter of fact, I do. I was doing it with my son. This is a funny story.

I was doing it with my son this weekend. He started crying. Now, a couple of

things before we start, you guys.

At no time can you touch the hat or gloves, nor can anything touch them.

Basically, you have to whip your arms and head around as crazy as you can

until everything falls off, okay?

Also, please keep in mind that in the event of a tie, our great audience will

decide the winner based on your dancing skills, so you better bring it.

Everyone ready? Contestant number one, you are up. All right. Going over, pal.

When you're ready. Audience, let's cheer him on. Ready.

Stand! Stand!

Get up! Come on!

Come on!

Bang your head! Bang your head!

All right. All right. Thank you very much. Get over here.

I didn't even know.

I don't even know what to say to you.

Let's just show him what he didn't do in slow motion.

There you go. Those are some cool moves, though.

I mean, the moves are good.

That's what we can give you.

Pretty good, yeah. All right, very, very good.

Very, very good. You have some decent moves there, so if no one else scores

anything, you might have a chance.

Higgins, how many points does this man get?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Very obvious.

All right. No problem. It doesn't hurt that bad. All right.

I feel good about this.

Do you feel good about it? All right, we can do this. All right, go on over

there, buddy.

Whatever audience. Let's help her out. Ready, set...

Unbelievable.

That's the best dancing we've ever had.

Ever.

Are you a dancer?

Yes, I am. Oh, my God. That was fantastic.

Let's see what she did in slow motion. That was great.

Yeah!

How many points did she get there?

Shoot! There you go!

That was great.

I'm just asking before you. Are you a dancer?

No, I may look like one, but I'm not.

Alright, alright.

It's all to you, buddy. Why don't you get out there and whenever you're ready,

do it. Alright.

Yep. Take your time. Alright, let's do this.

Ready, set...

passed out for a second.

I think you saw the other side.

You reached for the sun at one point, yeah. You were like, wait, I got to

figure out what is going on in my life.

I'm glad you're still here and still with us.

Dave, can we see what it looks like in slow motion?

That came right off. That was good.

Oh, that was good.

That was good.

Yeah, that's where you started to go nuts right there.

That's where it got crazy.

That's where it got a little nuts, and then you go, wait, what's going on?

So then you just kind of stop right there.

Yeah.

Wow. That's where it all went south.

It was a great job, though. Higgins, how many points did he receive?

It is a tie, number two!

Tie for two. Okay, audience, it's up to you. The applause meter.

Is it contestant number two?

Or contestant number three? Come on.

Number two is the winner. We have a winner, Mario.

Congratulations.

Oh,

my God. Congratulations.

Here's your framed origami.

I don't know how you're going to get this on the train or whatever. On the up

train. There you go. Take it on the up train. You can take it home with you.

Guys, I'm sorry you did not win, but nobody goes home empty-handed.

You guys each will be receiving your very own can of turtle wax.

That's right.

Thank you for dancing.

And thanks to you, all you boys and girls and gals and pals and friends and

fans out in TV land. Just stay right there and don't go nowhere, because

there's more to come if you want some.

And all about who lost or won, it's how you play and how you feel. The rest is

easy when you know the deal. We got crazy cats, busted moves, funky grooves

from the Roots Crew dudes.

A little later, I'm sure you know, we got the Beach Boys here to close the

show. I dig the sun, I dig the sand, and all the little critters that live in it,

man. But I don't need a beach to look for crabs. All I have to do is check my

pants.

You heard me right.

I got pubic lice. But don't worry, baby. It's kind of nice.

Not sure how I got them. Probably college. But I get around, and that's

common knowledge.

I get good vibrations all over the place.

And when they hop up and down, I'm a private space.

So sit right back and go smack your whack and no-touch-that-towel. We'll be

right back with Jennifer Connelly, everybody.

Our first guest is an Academy Award-winning actress whose new film,

Virginia, is in select theaters on May 18th. Ladies and gentlemen, please

welcome Jennifer Connelly!

Come on, come on down Sweet Virginia

So pretty.

I haven't seen... Aw, thanks. I love you, too.

I think that was for me.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I love you, too. No, I'm just kidding. I love you, too.

I just saw your beautiful little baby out there.

Last time you were here, you were... I'm quite partial to her. Agnes Lark. Yes, I

was pregnant last time. Yeah, last time you were here, she was on the show with

you. She was on the show. And now she's back. And now she's around backstage.

It's the cutest baby I've ever seen. Thank you. Oh, my gosh. I'm sorry. I had

to squeeze her.

She's, yeah. She was sleeping.

She was sleeping. Until Jimmy.

So I was like, hey, which noise maker should I use for my New Year's party?

This one or this one?

She's so cute. Congratulations. How's Paul doing? Thank you. Great.

He's a good man. He's doing great. The boys are doing great.

Good, good, good. I was, of course, doing a little research here. Now you're

coming on the show. And you've been acting since you were a little, little

kid for your whole life. Yeah, I was 11 when I started.

I mean, you were in Labyrinth with David Bowie. How cool is that?

Like, come on. That is crap.

Look at how cute.

Look at how cute. I mean, how was that? Was that amazing doing Labyrinth? It was

pretty extraordinary.

I was, you know, I had an amazing time doing it. I was a little bit behind the

curve. I wasn't that precocious musically, let's say, which is probably

a good thing. Do you know who he was? I knew who he was. I had a friend who was

really into David Bowie. Oh, really?

Who got, I think...

couldn't quite handle it and was suddenly not into David Bowie once she

found out that I was willing to work with him. Oh, she got out of it?

Yeah, she's like, I'm taking these posters down. He's so not cool anymore.

Oh, my gosh.

But so it was probably good because I probably wouldn't have been able to work

with him. Yeah. But he was so phenomenal.

And Jim Henson as well? Jim Henson was extraordinary.

I mean, how fun is that?

He was such a genius, such an artist.

Do your kids get it? Do they go, oh, my gosh, Mom, you were with David both

weeks? Well, my kids actually are incredibly precocious musically. They

both play guitar and sing and write their own music.

And my younger one has declared he wants to be a rock star when he grows up. How

old is he?

He's 8, and my older one's 14.

Now, he had an interesting Halloween costume, which I think is awesome. Yeah,

yeah. It was his idea?

His idea. He's actually so into David Bowie that he thought it would be

interesting to think about what if Ziggy Stardust were a zombie, and so he

decided to be Zombie Stardust. Yeah, there he is, Zombie Stardust.

Come on, that is the coolest.

That's the cutest kid right there. Come on. Zombie Stardust. Zombie Stardust. I

love that. Do they ever, I know you being you, do you ever introduce them to

rock stars?

Have you ever introduced them to them?

Well, I've seen you backstage at the Garden.

At the Who? I think we were at the Who together.

I actually, we introduced them to U2.

to bono and the edge which was really huge for them because they'd been

playing a lot of their music this was last summer when they were when they

were touring and uh it was just enormous for for my boys they just freak out what

do they do they freaked out they were so nice i have to say bono and the edge

were both so sweet to my kids and came over and said hello we saw them

backstage at their concert and uh kai my older one was literally his eyebrows

which are kind of runs in the family quite large, were all sewn to his

hairline of hair. They were up like this. And my little one was kind of

doing the same thing, but he kept, I think, noticing that he was doing it, so

they were... He kind of dragged them down.

They were going like this the whole time because they kept going back up. He was

so excited. He was like, these kids are weird.

I don't know if they're Scottish all of a sudden. I can't do a Bono impression.

I can't do a Bono impression. Yeah.

Now, I want to talk about this movie, Virginia.

Look at you here.

You got blonde hair there.

Oh, yeah.

Now, what is Virginia about?

Well... You know, her name is Virginia, my character, and she's an interesting

woman. She's eccentric.

She's colorful.

She's inappropriate.

There are lots of things about her that are really very, very wrong, but a lot

of things that are really very right about her.

One of them is she's an incredibly loving mother, and she's a single mom,

and she, I think, at the core of this movie, has a really beautiful

relationship between her and her son.

who's a teenager, and she needs to learn to let him go and have his own life.

This could be a tough thing, yeah. And this is about the same guy who wrote

Milk? Yes.

Talented guy.

He's a very talented guy, and it was a very personal story for him. I think it

was largely based on his relationship with his aunt growing up, who was, you

know, he had these really wild stories to tell about her. She was a very...

Exciting and unpredictable character.

Let's say we have a clip.

Here's Jennifer Connelly in Virginia. Take a look If anything ever happened to

you then I just may as well be dead Do you hear me?

It's don't be a hero I want you to go out there.

I want you to make a break for as soon as the coast is clear. Okay

I'ma eat us some egg salad sandwiches for the trip.

They're in the luggage.

You can eat mine too.

I love you, Mom.

I love you.

For peas and carrots, you and me.

Peas and carrots.

Jennifer Connelly, Virginia's in sweat fitters! On May 18th, Bryan Wilson and

Mike Love join us next! Come on back!

We

are

joined right now by the principal members of one of the most enduring and

influential bands in the history of popular music. 50 years after their

debut, the Beach Boys...

remain the top-selling American band for albums and singles and have posted a

record 36 Billboard Top 40 hits.

Please welcome, from America's band, the Beach Boys, Bryan Wilson and Mike Love!

-♪ I just, I just wasn't made for these times...

Legends! You are legends. Thank you for coming, and thank you for being on our

program. We heard our music being performed backstage by The Roots. So we

were digging The Roots.

Very cool.

That is awesome. Now, you guys were here back in 1968.

This studio was Johnny Carson.

And you guys, you did... Their hearts were full of spring.

A four-freshman song, Brian Wilson being the master of deciphering.

four freshmen harmonies that was my formal education for harmony is that

right yeah my formal education tricky tricky harmonies very close not easy

close harmonies i mean we have i mean you could have made it easier on

everybody i mean their hearts are full of spring i think that ending has to be

one of the trickiest

It's like, what?

It's very tricky. And the thing is about Brian, he can hear all the parts

simultaneously in his head, and you're lucky to learn one and hang on to it.

Yeah, exactly.

I would do the bass part on most of those. Just stick with the bass, yeah.

And Brian can go all over the place.

Can you help yourself from not harmonizing?

When you hear a song, do you sing the tune or do you sing the harmony?

The harmony first, and then if I can't understand it, then I...

I try another song.

He'll skip to a totally different song. Yeah. We would have done simpler

harmonies, like the Everly Brothers, two parts. But then the Wilsons had too many

kids.

Yeah, so you had to think of new parts. Exactly. That's right. Like, could you

teach me, like, a little, like, Barbara Ann? Could you teach me how to

harmonize? Oh, that ain't no thing.

Well, you got ba-ba-ba-ba-Barbara Ann. Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba

-Barbara Ann.

-♪ Ba-ba-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba

-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba

-ba

-ba

Or is it the same? Do you remember, like, back in the early days when you'd

load the gear into the car and the station wagon?

We found out in about six months that there's a thing called a roadie.

Yeah, yeah. And now we're spoiled.

Everything is set up for us. Everything is done for us. We're driven here,

driven there, pampered, whatever. It's a lot different than the station wagon

with the U-Haul trailer and setting up and breaking down your own stuff. It is

different, yeah. It's a little bit easier.

And then how about the studio and getting into the studio? That's much

different, right? We just completed an album, which we're proud to do.

Is that the album, how it looks? Yeah.

Let me see that.

Wow, that's the first time I've seen her album.

You've never seen it? Oh, wait. No, I haven't seen that yet.

What do you think? It's pretty cool. Fresh release, you know.

I'm amazed.

It's catchy.

It's gorgeous looking, too. It's like you always have very creative covers,

very artsy covers on it.

That's why God Made the Radio is the name of the tune. Do you guys still

listen to the radio?

Oh, yeah.

What do you listen to, like new stuff?

You know, they have the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s on that.

done that serious thing. And I'm always listening to see if they'll play a Beach

Boys song.

You're always hoping.

You're always going out, playing it, yeah, and seeing if you're in a crowded

restaurant, like, hey, you guys want to hear something?

I have that, too.

So do you stay in the 60s music more?

More than now? I play 50s, like 50s. 50s music? Like what groups? Just doo-wop?

Penguins, the Adele Vikings, and a bunch of them.

Yeah, yeah. No, I know. You can go to Alyssa's Endless. But, yeah, I do that,

too. My dad used to sing doo-wop on the street corners in Brooklyn.

Really? And so, yeah, so I grew up listening to all doo-wop stuff, and he's

one of those guys where you put it on the radio, and you're like... He won't

sing the tune. He's always harmonizing with stuff. I'm like, just turn it off

or let them sing, you know?

That was that other great influence of the Beach Boys harmonies is the doo-wop,

and you can hear it in Don't Worry Baby and different songs. We covered a lot of

stuff. We covered Why Do Fools Fall in Love by... Frankie Lyman and the

Teenagers. Do you do that now on tour or no? Yeah, we are doing a beautiful

arrangement. Tell me more about the whole band, the whole band. Brian came

up with a monster arrangement vocally on that song. It's just so beautiful.

You cannot believe it. Really? Oh.

And the guys that are on tour with you now, Brian, are these the guys you've

toured with before?

Yeah. Yeah.

They joined Michael's and Bruce's band. We all joined him. We all joined forces.

It's kind of a blend. But primarily a lot of guys from Brian's band, they're

all... Awesome musicians.

And how does it feel to be back together? Because I got to say, it puts

a smile on our face when we see you guys together.

Well, I'll tell you, when you... Thank you.

When you hear the music coming back in the studio, you say, wow.

I mean, it's like sonic deja vu. Like, there was never any time that passed.

It's just, you know, Brian has this uncanny ability to structure those

moving parts and stuff.

And he has the same ability now as he ever did.

And it sounds beautiful coming back in the studio. And he knows the strength,

the vocal strength of each one of us. So it's kind of cool. He says, OK, this is

your part. This is your part. So yeah, you conduct everybody. Same as always.

I mean, you're brilliant, both of you guys. And I'm excited about this record.

I know you have a very funny Elvis Presley story that I'm going to make you

tell, if you don't mind. Well, I met Elvis in a recording studio in

Hollywood.

And I said, Elvis, could you come over across the way and listen to what we're

doing? He goes, sure.

And I went like this. And he goes, karate chop. I knew you knew karate,

right? He was karate chopping my arm so hard. And he goes, I'm leaving, I'm

leaving. And he split.

That was it.

I love that you karate chopped Elvis Presley for no reason.

I knew he knew karate. That's why I started doing karate stuff. You're just

playing around with him, yeah. He just chops him. He's like, that's it. I'm out

of here, man.

Bring the limousine around, man. I'm out of here. Oh, there's a lot of stories.

Yeah, I'm sure there is. Yeah, absolutely.

Well, congratulations, and thank you for coming here and giving us your time and

your music. And on behalf of all Beach Boys fans, thank you for everything.

This is just great, and congratulations.

When we come back, the Beach Boys are going to sing another song. Come on

back.

Thank you.

Welcome back, everyone.

Here to perform the title track of their brand-new album, That's Why God Made the
