one of the things that was important to him
was that he not just get over the fact that he got stabbed.
And so when we had an opportunity
where Negan could actually stab Maggie and repay her for that,
we jumped at the opportunity.
Oww!
I love this whole stabbing storyline.
In episode one, it was always sort of intended
to be almost sort of funny.
You fucking stab me. Take it.
And then we bring it up a couple of times.
I really should have stabbed you.
You weren't gonna stab me.
Oh, I was so gonna stab you a little bit.
And then it does eventually happen in the end,
and it's the thing that saved them.
I land on my back, sort of.
I roll over and absorb a couple hits.
On your back, I'll give you two bold kicks.
We take it this far.
We take the chop arm rig and we continue the scene after this.

When I read that Maggie cuts off Dillard's arm,
my first thought was, "Well, that tracks."
Just 'cause it's just a little outside of Maggie,
but very deserving.
And it just shows that she's...
She can go there, too.
And the way it ends for...
-He's in pain. -He's in a lot of pain.
He is in a lot of pain.
I hope you find what you're looking for.
The arm cut off implies a certain kind of death
in this world that will result in something else.
-Here we go. -And action.
And I find that choice on their part to be thrilling.
I hate that we lost him.
In fact, Lauren and I pitched...
Oh, God, we went so hard pitching ways he doesn't die.
We went hard.
"You should shoot an alternate ending in case
we can get him back for another year."
-We tried everything. -Yeah.
I know.

Seth did tell me that that is his fate.
And so I built Dillard the entire series
with this deep desire to connect.
Scene 36.
Walker Dillard shuffles through the streets.
And so to be placed back into the most comfortable place
Dillard has been in is romantic, and it's very poetic.
The overall experience in "Dead City" has kind of been,
I gotta say,
one of the most rich acting experiences of my career.
When we first came here,
I thought that leading meant that I had to lose myself.
I can be a leader and a mom.
Some of us have been telling you that for a long time.
If you think about where Maggie and Negan
started the season together, Maggie could not imagine
that she could be in the same family as Negan,
But by the end of the season, they are family.
It's like, these are the things we've learned
and this is how we've grown
and what we've gained from everything.
And how do we look forward.
The way the trajectory of where we're going,
the new ground, I think, that has been tilled in front of us,
brings up some storylines
and some opportunities for these characters
that I've never been more excited about.
-Truly. -I think where we could go,
the possibilities for this new world are,
and for us, really exciting.
I said I wasn't gonna cry. I'm already crying.
We were lucky enough to bring in Seth and Matt,
who revitalized, I think, the show and the script.
And this year, it's been such a fucking pleasure.
I don't know what to say.
