- As you know, Mark is here,

and I also wanted to introduce

our CEO and chairman, Randy Edeker.

- I was talking to Mark, and he's like,

"Hey, I really wanted to come to Iowa

and premiere this movie."

- It's a movie that I've been trying to make

for quite some time.

It's a passion project of mine,

and I'm honored to have played Stuart Long

and bring his story to the big screen.

[tornado sirens wailing]

- Sarah.

- Oh, we're pausing just for a second.

- Yeah.

[rain pattering]

- If you haven't heard, there's a tornado.

[dramatic music]

- Is it past?

- Uh, not yet.

- Do you want to go to the basement?

[tornado sirens wailing, thunder rumbling]

[thunder rumbling]

[thunder cracks]

[spray paint can rattles]

[upbeat hip-hop music]

[rain pattering, wind blowing]

[dramatic music]

Hey, you made it. - Hi, we did.

Really good to meet you. - Good to see you. Pleasure.

How are you? Hi. Mark. - Hi. Maddie.

Nice to meet you. - Mark. How are you, Maddie?

How are you? Sit, sit.

- Well, this is not quite what we expected.

- No.

No, no, no. - Yeah.

- But what are you gonna do? - Yeah.

- So we run a young adult podcast

here in Des Moines, and we just wanted

to figure out why you chose "Father Stu."

- "Father Stu" chose me.

- Right. - This is all Stu's doing.

Stu is still hard at work right now.

- I'm so sick of watching movies about faith

that don't have, like,

that grittiness to it, that aren't real.

- Yeah, this has got all the gritty.

The archbishop was very upset initially

with the language.

- Did you ever consider trying to clean it up

so more people could see it?

- I mean, we kind of talked a lot about how much we push,

how much we don't push. - Yeah.

- When movies come out about priests,

they always end in scandal-

- Why are you guys playing good cop, bad cop?

[laughter]

- Guys, how's the picture and the sound?

- Perfect! - I mean, it has to be perfect.

This is the most important film of my career.

Hy-Vee is amazing.

They're the best partners

that anybody could ask for.

They just care so much.

They're just connected so much

to their community, to their customers.

It's an employee-owned business.

We did a premiere and a screening there

because they just really wanted to help

get the word out there, you know,

and, you know, really kind of be the support system.

- Cool. Wow, look at this.

- This is how Hy-Vee does it, right here.

[gentle piano music]

- Hey, how's it going, guys? - Hello.

- How are you? - Nice to see you, man.

- Welcome. Thank you for making the trip.

- The clock is ticking for Matthew and Dakota.

They know that technology works quickly,

so the deadline really is posed

to get this thing out there in the marketplace while,

from a technological standpoint,

it's still cutting edge.

- I don't wanna put you on the spot,

but I was hoping you would leave behind a couple

so we'd actually use them, because the whole point-

I think the biggest thing that we're discussing

is usability.

- So these are true prototypes.

- We already kicked off new bottles.

They're about five weeks out.

And then we also designed a smaller one

that would fit in a cupholder.

- The bottom line is if Matthew and Dakota

want the participation of Mark, Lev, and myself,

we need to have working demos,

samples of the product that we can use.

- We should have Archie make us a smoothie.

Seriously, because then we'll see,

you know, what it's really like.

- Sure. - Okay.

- All right.

- You gotta hold the button down.

- Oh, I see. [blender whirring]

- Getting to my point- [powering down]

- Whoa, that's interesting.

- Whoa. - You just bumped it.

It turns off when you unscrew it.

- There's barely any drip on that.

- But don't do it so-

Well, that's good-whoa! [whirring continues]

- [laughs]

- Let me see that one. - That's sick.

- Whoa. - Is that supposed to happen?

- No, that's not right. - That's dangerous.

- We thought we got that problem solved.

- Yeah. - That is a bug.

- That is a-you found a bug. - That's a problem right there.

- Yeah. - It's a good thing.

- This was a blessing in disguise

because it made us jam on the brakes for a second

because we were like, this is awesome,

we're moving forward.

But this product is not ready to go to market,

and there needs to be much more development done on it.

- That can never happen again.

- You know, we're gonna have fixtures

to test all of the safety features

and everything before that ever leaves the door.

Customer would never get one like that.

These are very much prototypes

that we've been beating up to try to find failures.

- I found one. - That is pretty crazy.

I've never had that happen before.

- I have total confidence that these guys

are gonna fix all the bugs

and make an incredible, safe product,

but we have to see a safe product

before we move forward with anything.

- The reality is that mistakes happen all the time

and technology often doesn't work.

And the beautiful aspect of technology

and almost most business problems

is that it's not "there was a failure,"

it's about how did you respond to that failure.

- What did we learn today, Dakota?

- No changing gaskets the day before.

[laughter]

- No late, unvalidated design changes.

[upbeat music]

- Because we wanna create products for everybody.

- We are just starting the marketing push.

It's very exciting.

So we've got a great partner in Sony,

and they've really gotten behind the film.

- This is the kind of movie that really has to be built

through word of mouth, grassroots promotion.

- How did you keep Mark Wahlberg under control?

Did he ad-lib some of that?

- Yes, and most of what he ad-libbed

contained excessive amounts of swearing, so-

[laughter]

- So Mark Wahlberg joins us

right here in the living room today

to talk about the newest movie, "Father Stu."

Hey, Mark, thanks so much for making time to be with us.

- Oh, thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

- There's a bit of profanity.

- There's, uh-there is some colorful language, yes.

You know, this is how people speak.

- Oh, I know. - You have so many

faith-based movies that are out there,

and they just get the same audience,

and they don't really move the needle.

- No. - I'm excited to let you know

that my new movie, "Father Stu,"

is a story of grit, faith,

and redemption.

This is special. - Yeah.

- This is special.

- The women's stuff hitting our site.

- Doing this women's line is risky as hell.

If you screw up, your entry into the women's market,

you don't just get to do it the next month

and try over again.

- Whoo! - It's a great time to launch.

In having a very small little assortment,

it's nice, where you can, like, test a product.

You don't have to put too much money into it.

You don't have to, like, bet your life on it.

And then what's great is that we can take

that feedback from that little test

and apply it to when we do a bigger line.

Rhea brought up, like, plus-sizing

and really wanting to, like, fit everybody,

and I think that's a great goal for us to have.

One thing that we did talk about

was adding a XXL size,

which, at this point in the game,

I thought maybe we would wait a little bit longer to do it,

when we'd launch more product,

and you have that real collection launch.

There's so many things that we're not able to do

from the get-go. - Mm-hmm.

That's our aspiration. - Yeah, yeah.

- Yeah, we wanna get there. We will get there.

- Right. - Yeah.

- Oh, no.

- Yeah, this is really weird.

I've never seen this before.

Load file didn't work.

It's knocking off by one size,

so if somebody orders a extra small,

it's putting a small into the cart.

- We get ready for the launch,

and then our e-commerce platform went down,

systemwide.

How many orders is that affecting, you think?

- Over 90 so far.

- We had a couple hours right at the launch

when we weren't even able to sell anything,

and so, you don't know whether this customer's walking away.

Are they not gonna come back?

Are they gonna be pissed off about it?

I mean, you know, shit always breaks

when you launch something.

What are the odds?

The competition is fierce,

so execution is really critical.

[gentle music]

- What's up, bud? - Hey, how's it going, man?

- So do you guys wanna give an update?

- Did you guys sample- did you take it with you

and use it?

- [laughs] Well, I sampled it.

- What happened?

- There's a safety switch,

and I put in new gaskets.

The gasket was so stiff, it held down

- So he turned it on, and it wasn't on the bottle.

And it just started spinning. - It kept going.

But, like, this close to Lev's face.

- Really? - Yeah.

- We do have some design updates

we just wanna show you.

- Well, I think we're kind of interested

in where your head's at with this.

- Those guys are fantastic,

super smart guys,

and maybe it'll be a big success,

but they are not ready.

Things that I am going to really cut a check-

I'm not saying yes unless it's something

that I absolutely believe in 110%.

- Looking at the actual markets,

we wanted to see what is possible

for a high-end lifestyle good.

- We're super bullish.

My goal is to sell a million of these things.

That's what I wanna do.

- So the first run, you're getting 20,000 units.

- Yep. - How quickly can you get

another 20, 50, 100?

- Well, stuff in China has been pretty unpredictable

with supply chains. - Yeah.

- These shortages are not going away,

so we do wanna get running as quickly as we can.

- When? - Ideally, end of the month.

We do wanna get going, and-

- You got the cash with you, Archie?

- Yeah. - I think it's in there.

- It's right here. - Oh, nice.

- We're not on the same deadline.

We need a finished product,

and right now, we don't have that product.

- We've pushed it as far as we can push it ourselves,

is the truth of it. - Yeah.

- We think this product is gonna be successful,

and we wanna put everything behind it

to kind of enable that success.

- Yeah. Yeah.

- At this moment, if you ask me the chances

that Mark and Lev and myself will be a part of this,

at this point in time, I would say it's not gonna happen.

- But the reality is,

it's completely up in the air.

It could go either way.

They have to get us that sample.

- He's looking for a finished good,

not a start-up.

- I'm doing good. I was just, uh, calling

to fill you in on the women's launch today.

We went live around 9:00 or so,

just with the limited women's product,

and our platform went down right at the launch.

- But we were able to get back online,

and it just shows that there's massive demand for this.

- Yeah, what were you expecting

as far as the launch?

- I thought, if we could sell out of it

in three or four days, that would be awesome.

- Great. - We're probably gonna sell out

of everything in one day.

We're almost sold out, man.

- Fantastic. - Pretty nice, right?

- That's amazing. - They're going nuts

for what they're seeing, and so far,

the signs are really awesome. - All right, bud.

- We sold out of everything in a day,

and that's a good problem to have

'cause we sold out so fast,

but it's also an area of concern

because we don't have the supply available

in a consistent level.

- Don't put a customer

through the frustration

of being sold out.

You better have it ready,

because people will try to buy it one time,

and if it's sold out, they may not come back.

- It's a Municipal girl,

Uh, bet. Nice.

- It matches my nails.

- And I hear this is a passion project for you.

- Yes.

It's reminding people to have hope,

to reaffirm their faith,

and to be inspired to do a little bit more

and do a little bit better themselves.

This is your hometown. What does it feel

to bring this latest film and do this screening

right here, where you're from?

- Uh, it's always special being here.

It's a little bittersweet.

This is the first time that I've been home

and not gone to see my mom,

which is always my first...

And it's the first phone call that I ever make,

it's always the first visit that I make when I get here,

so it's a bit bittersweet for me,

but, you know, in making this movie

and learning how Stu dealt with adversity,

it's really given me

the ability to look at things in a more positive light.

[indistinct conversation]

- This is where I saw every film

when I was in college.

- Really?

- 'Cause I went to school across the street,

at Emerson.

I'm really proud of what we all achieved together,

and I'm proud of us

for all taking the risk together.

- When will you know it's time to leave

the bright lights in Hollywood?

- Um, sooner rather than later, probably.

- Really? - Yeah, but I feel like

this is starting a new chapter for me

in that I definitely want to focus on making more things

that will help people.

We wanted to really make a movie to honor Father Stu,

and so, when I got on my hands and my knees

and I prayed to be able to make this movie,

what I wanted to accomplish was-

I wanted to encourage people

to be the best versions of themselves

because the world is in shambles right now.

The only thing that's gonna bring people closer together

is love. How are you, buddy?

- Really good. - People are hungry

for good, positive, encouraging content.

It's such a difficult time right now

with the pandemic and social unrest

and civil unrest, and just division.

But I can tell you, all it takes

is one good audience to feel inspired

and uplifted by something,

and that word of mouth will spread like wildfire.
