US territory,

way out in the Pacific.

- Intense World War II history.

World War II history.

And, even before that,
with a Spanish occupation.

Now, let me guess.

It has a lot of
paranormal activity?

Oh, you can be taught, Torres.

But, yes, people are
sending me reports

of shadow figures,
phantom battle sounds,

full-body apparitions
of soldiers,

and there's even reports that
deep in the jungle,

there's ancient spirits
that are causing chaos.

It is a really
fascinating place.

Beautiful island, rich culture,
but it is fused

with this tragic history.

I've had a chance to
investigate there myself,

and I will say,
there is a real energy

to America's most remote
territory.

The verdant island of
Guam has been a US territory

since 1898,
but its history stretches back

more than 4,000 years,

when the Indigenous
Chamoru people first settled

the island after voyaging
across the Pacific

from Southeast Asia.

For nearly 3,000 years,
the island is peaceful

and largely undisturbed.

That is until 1565,
when Spanish conquistadors

claim Guam, bringing with them
centuries of violence

and disease that nearly
wipe out the Chamoru people.

Then, in 1898, America seizes
the island from Spain,

and for the next four decades,
it becomes a quiet outpost

for the US Navy.

But all that changes when,
just hours after bombing

Pearl Harbor,
Imperial Japan attacks Guam

on December 8, 1941.

American forces withdraw,
leaving the Chamoru people

to endure nearly three years of
brutal occupation marked by

forced labor, torture,
and mass executions.

July of 1944,

the US launches a campaign
to retake the island.

With heavy bombing from the air
and tanks advancing on land,

the Americans gradually push

the Japanese back
into the jungle.

It's a brutal war of attrition.

Every inch the US Marines claim
comes soaked in blood.

After 20 days
of relentless fighting,

Guam is officially declared
liberated.

But by then, more than
17,000 Japanese soldiers,

1,100 Chamoru civilians,

and some 1,700 American
service members are dead.

Today, the war is long over,
but some believe

the fallen soldiers never left.

Across the island,
locals regularly report hearing

disembodied voices,
seeing strange lights,

and even encountering
full-bodied apparitions.

But the ghosts of war aren't
the only spirits

said to haunt the island.

Deep within the jungle,
the Chamorros speak

of a far older presence,
the Taotao Mo'na,

ancestral guardian spirits
believed to protect

Guam's sacred lands.

Many islanders still honor
these ancient ghosts

with deep respect,
not least because it is said

that those who cross them will
suffer terrible misfortune,

unexplained illness,
and even physical attacks.

What hides deep
in the jungles of Guam?

Are the restless spirits of war
locked in eternal conflict?

Or, after centuries
of bloodshed,

are the island's ancient
guardians striking back?

- Guys, Guam.
- Guys, Guam indeed.

The Chamoru are a deeply
spiritual people,

and these tales of these
ancient spirits,

the Taotao Mo'na, they date
back centuries.

You know, I've actually spent
some time in Guam myself,

and the history,
good and bad,

is right there for you
to see it.

I mean, there's literally
rusting tanks and planes from

World War II in the jungles.

So maybe it's the psychological
shadow of the past

that is influencing people.
- Surprise, surprise.

Torres thinks people are being
intimidated by rusting objects.

Can you keep
an open mind for once?

I do keep an open mind.

In a, I'd-rather-keep-it-closed
kind of way.

Well, whether your mind is
open or not,

this case file is

And so I want you to get to
Guam and see if this island

is simply being influenced by
its own history

something paranormal at work.

The vibrant ancient culture of
the Chamoru people

is very much alive, but so is
the island's violent history,

which still casts a shadow over
Guam to this day.

Hey, great to meet you.

Local teacher,
Sean Monforte,

has dedicated years documenting
Guam's World War II past

and has witnessed many
strange things along the way.

So this is Asan Beach,

this was one of the biggest
battlefronts in World War II.

This is where the taking
of Guam began.

Over a thousand Marines died
storming this beach.

So this was like
Guam's Normandy beach?

Yes, very close to it.

The Marines showed up
and landed here.

The Japanese were already
fortified on the beach.

If you look at the ridge,
you can see some of

the fortifications here.

You can see the caves that
they would hide in.

In fact, there's a pillbox
right here on the beach

they would use as cover,
so they would just be able to

chop down the Marines
as they were coming up

to the ridge.

It was a very bloody battle.

Guam during World War II was
an absolute living hell.

People don't understand this
was a Chamoru village.

And then when
the Japanese came,

we were caught
between the bombings

and the Japanese brutality.

All these caves
you're gonna see on Guam,

they're hand-dug
through forced labor.

So the Japanese forced
the Chamoru people

to create these fortifications?
- Yes.

If we didn't submit,
they would kill us.

So the taking of Asan Beach
was incredibly traumatic.

And that will leave an imprint
on this land.

Can you tell me
any unusual experiences

that people are having here?

So people have
strange experiences

all over Asan Ridge.

There's so much energy up
there, you'll hear explosions.

You'll hear the vehicles,
that clankety-clank-clank

of a vehicle.
- Oh, wow.

There's stories of lantern
lights inside of this ridge.

There is a cave over there
with a pillbox.

When you come here at night,
the story is

you see the lantern lights.

If you follow it and they're
still there, you will see

a Japanese soldier
running into the cave.

What do you mean
a Japanese soldier?

It's a full-body apparition.

And you go closer,
then he just disappears.

I have not seen it myself,

but I've had
my own experiences.

Me and my buddy,
we were driving in a car,

and I look in
the rearview mirror.

There's a Japanese soldier in
full uniform with a rifle

sitting in my backseat
like this.

What?

You're telling me you saw
an actual apparition

of a Japanese soldier
behind you?

Full-body, just like me
and you,

and my buddy next to me,
he is scared.

He looked at me,
he said, "Go faster."

What I'm gonna do?
Drive faster and crash?

My heart's beating super fast.
And he goes, "Stop!"

So we got out of the car,
and we left the car there.

You left the car there?

That car was never driven by
myself again.

I didn't want that guy to come
anywhere with me again.

Why do you think it showed up
that night for you?

Guam is a very
spiritual place.

You're not only dealing with
the World War II spirits,

but you're dealing with
the Taotao Mo'na,

the spirit of Guam.

They are the protectors
of the island.

The Taotao Mo'na,
they can protect you.

Or they can harm you.

It's how you treat Guam and its
cultures and its island itself.

You should be careful
what you look for

because you might find it.

We'll climb Asan Ridge to
locate the pillboxes and caves

used during the World War II

It is just so overgrown.

of one of these pillboxes
and not even know it.

and that's what we heard.

it's a man-made cave.

And this history tells us this
was one of the caves created

by forced slavery of
the Chamoru people.

I can't imagine the horrific
conditions that people

would have been in.

an ancient settlement to learn

about the Chamoru's
traditional spiritual beliefs.

a Chamoru historian

and curator of the Guam Museum.

I really want to talk to
you about the ancient people

of Guam and specifically
the beliefs here.

In order to understand
the Chamoru people

and our ancestors,

first you need to understand
the Taotao Mo'na.

Taotao Mo'na means
"the people of before."

They are the spirits
of our ancestors.

And so this is why for us
today, the Chamoru people...

have this strong
ancestral veneration.

So the belief here is that
the Taotao Mo'na are the spirits

of the past.
- Oh yes.

What do the Taotao Mo'na want?

More than anything,
the Taotao Mo'na want

balance and respect.

Around the island you'll have
all sorts of stories

of Taotao Mo'na emerging when
there's an imbalance in nature,

always reminding people,
don't take too much,

don't take more than
what you need.

When you look at our history--
colonization, war...

you can see that nature
is out of balance.

So the Taotao Mo'na
can't be happy about that.

I imagine they're pretty angry.

Can the Taotao Mo'na
be dangerous?

Is that how they're perceived?

Some people would definitely
feel that the Taotao Mo'na

are dangerous,
but the Taotao Mo'na are usually

very good about warning you.

They'll give you signs.

They can disorient you,

make you go around in circles
and keep you lost until

they feel like
you've learned your lesson.

They can also make you sick.

I mean, I gotta say,
last night we found a cave that

was through forced labor,
carved by the Chamoru people,

and within there, I felt sick.

I almost felt like
I would pass out.

Oh my goodness.

It definitely sounds like
there might have been
Taotao Mo'na there.

That means you need to leave
right now.

Don't continue on.
They won't warn you again.

You are on your own if
they choose to punish you.

Guam's spiritual history,

A nature guide and descendant

of the local Chamoru people

who says she had
a terrifying encounter

with the island's
ancestral spirits.

I understand that you've had
some personal experiences

with the Taotao Mo'na.
Can you tell me about that?

Yes.
I was born and raised here.

I've been a hike guide
for over 20 years.

But one of the most scariest
hikes that I've experienced

ever just happened last year.
- Oh wow.

There was a hike that I led--

it was myself and three
other individuals.

We were in
the thick jungle,

and I realized we were being
turned around multiple times.

- You were walking in circles?
- Yes.

I knew something was wrong,
and it didn't matter

if we had GPS on.

It wasn't working for us.

I was thinking that we were
gonna be kept there

the entire night.

I had to make sure that
for myself...

and the people I was with,
that we made it out safe.

I knew what we were
experiencing was

the Taotao Mo'na telling us
they don't want us there.

They were telling me,
somebody in your group should

not be here on the island.

Whatever their intentions are
is not good.

And you believe that someone
in that group

was causing the Taotao Mo'na
to protect themselves

and keep y'all going in circles?
- Absolutely.

I'm not normally scared of
my ancestors,

but at that time, I was.

What did you do to try
and get out of there?

I had to ask the Taotao Mo'na
for forgiveness,

and after asking
for forgiveness,

we pushed forward
and finally find our way out.

And we were in a totally
different area, miles away from

where we actually started.
- Wow.

If we do get trapped, we need
to ask for forgiveness...

- Yes.
- ...for overstepping
their boundaries.

Yes, absolutely.

You got to be really careful.

Respect the Taotao Mo'na.

If we wanted to encounter
these ancestral spirits,

the Taotao Mo'na ourselves,
where would we go?

Around the island,
you'll have sacred places

with rich history
attached to them.

We still believe Taotao Mo'na
remain in these places.

For example, the latte stones.

These were the foundations for
the houses for our ancestors.

They elevated the homes up off
the ground, which allowed

our people to bury their dead
between the latte stones.

The living are up here,

and then your deceased relatives
are down here underneath,

always close by
to protect the living.

So find the latte stones,

find the Taotao Mo'na.
- Yes.

Get on a boat and follow
the Talafofo River.

All along the river was filled
with ancient settlements,

but if you keep following
the river to the end

where it narrows
and you can't go any further,

that's where you're gonna find
the most untouched latte sites.

You will find artifacts,
pottery pieces,

and be very careful,
because if you take them,

they might punish you.

We will be careful
and we will be respectful.

take the Talafofo River as far
as we can go.

From there,
we'll continue on foot,

heading north into the jungle,

where we hope to discover
the latte stones

of one of the last remaining

undisturbed ancient
Chamoru villages.

I mean, we're getting as
remote as it gets here in Guam.

Right in this area were
settlements dating back to

the year 1500 BC.
- Right.

This is freshwater, so it makes
all the sense in the world that

the settlements will be right
here on the Talafofo River.

Honestly, the Taotao Mo'na could
be surrounding us right now.

We need to be careful.
We are in it now.

Based on how narrow
it's getting, we are getting

close to where we need to
get tonight.

Ooh, big log under us.

Wow, a lot of roots in here.

This could be the site of
an ancient Chamoru village.

One of the most sacred sites
on the island, because not only

did the early Chamoru people
live here, they also buried

their dead underneath
these structures.

And that's why people believe
the Taotao Mo'na are so

powerful here.
It was their home in life.

It could be their home
in death.

Well, if they are here,

I say we look around to see
how big the settlement was.

I think I see more stones
that way.

This is our spot.

Heather and I set up
a perimeter of lights around

the latte stones, along with
a network of trail cameras.

I then head deeper into
the jungle

in search of Chamoru artifacts,

as it's believed
the Taotao Mo'na

linger around ancient objects.

Meanwhile, Heather will stay at
the latte site and attempt to

make contact with any spirits

she believes may still be there.

All right, so, the Chamoru
people founded this settlement

because of access to water.

So, I am going to use a method
called water scrying to try to

communicate with whatever
spirit is around us.

I'll ask questions and gently
stir the water.

frame-by-frame to see if

anything appears in the water.

I've learned that lesson
many times.

Heather is confident they were
in the presence of

the Taotao Mo'na, and much of
the evidence the team gathered

in Guam does seem to back
that up.

When she reviewed the stills
from her water scrying ritual

at the latte site,
she discovered

something remarkable.

Right after she asked...

The camera captured a flurry
of unusual shapes in the water.

Heather believes they appear
similar to the faces

and symbols seen in ancient
Chamoru petroglyphs.

And just moments after
her images were taken,

she heard movement
in the jungle.

Was all this the ancestral
spirits trying to communicate?

And that was far from the only
strange interaction.

After examining the footage
from inside

the Japanese pillbox,
a faint rhythm was discovered

right after Heather
flashed her signal light.

While most of the pattern
is meaningless,

one distinct sequence
stands out.

Astonishingly,
this matches Morse code

for the letter "V" for victory,

a wartime signal US Marines
may have used

after defeating Japanese forces
at Asan Ridge.

Could this have been
a coincidence,

or was a fallen Marine
trying to send a message

from the other side?

But not every sound was more
than meets the ear.

The strange noise the team
heard atop Asan Ridge was

definitively identified...

a Pacific golden plover

known to migrate through Guam.

We were also able to positively
identify the piece of pottery

Phil found in the jungle,
confirming it was crafted by

the Indigenous Chamoru some
1,000 years ago.

But there was one more curious
twist in the Taotao Mo'na tale,

and it concerns Phil's normally
solid sense of direction.

I am so turned around
right now.

We checked the GPS tracker on
his watch, and it showed this.

Somehow, Phil had been circling
the same area, but he swears

he thought he was heading in
a straight line.

Was this simply a case
of him losing his way,

or was Phil intentionally led
astray by the spirits?

Heather believes this was
the work of the Taotao Mo'na,

making a mischief with Phil,
perhaps taking offense

to his skeptical ways.

and 100% humidity out,

and I think it just got to me
in there.

Which makes her only more
certain that Phil's earlier

dizzy spell may in fact,

have also been
some kind of warning.

I'm convinced these spirits
are powerful in ways

we don't yet understand.

Do the Taotao Mo'na spirits
protect the island of Guam

and its Chamoru people in
the way the stories say

they've done throughout
centuries of bloodshed?
