here in Turks and Caicos.

like to come to the city.

- I don't want to go back
to where I grew up.

- Where did you grow up?

- Upstate New York.
Where I grew up was terrible,

and my sister lives
in the same home

I grew up in where I saw
a lot of crap going on.

So why would I want
to go back there

and live in that same bedroom
where I was,

like, trembling in my bed?
No. I'm not going back there.

- I'm getting a sense--
was there physical abuse?

- I was literally
four or five years old,

and I saw my mother's
bloody face

'cause my father was
beating her up, and she says,

"Please call the police.
Please call."

And I go, "But Mommy, I don't
know how to use the phone."

I remember that
at four or five.

And there's other things
I don't want to go into.

But one of the reasons why
I was very independent in life

is 'cause I remember
having this conversation

at 12 or 13 years old.

"Mommy, why are you
with Daddy?"

And she goes,
"I have no choice.

I have four kids."
- Oh, no.

- And there was no
domestic abuse centers then.

SAFE Centers.
There was no SAFE Center.

No. It was bad.
- You know, I--

- Just really bad.
You have no idea.

- I had no idea.

- My brother who died?

He was an alcoholic,
and my middle sister?

She has a bit
of a drinking problem.

My therapist said
the only thing that saved me

was I was the eldest,

so my mother gave me
a lot of responsibility.

I was like the second mother,
and I read books.

I put myself into books.

I would read eight books
a night till, like,

4:00 in the morning,
to just escape.

I'm numb to things.
I don't always pay attention.

- What I was gonna say.
- I zone out.

On TV, they go,
"Don't you notice the cameras?"

I don't notice the cameras.
Like, when I grew up,

I didn't notice my father was
screaming and yelling

and beating up my mother.
I blocked it out.

So when we're being filmed,

I don't even know
there's a camera on me.

- This is something
I had no idea about.

It explains a lot.

I feel like you also
don't like to show

a vulnerable side of yourself.
- Yes.

I feel I'll be weak.

- I think that Ramona
probably, growing up,

tuned a lot out.

I think that's
what she does now.

She could be offending you,
hurting you,

get in a fight with you,
and then she just tunes it out.

She doesn't deal with things,

but however she navigated
through that then

is not working for her now
as an adult.

You know, last night when
we were sitting at the table,

Kenya was, like, suggesting,
you know,

maybe that John
would like Luann.

- Sometimes you're so all
over the place and you're like,

"Oh, blah, blah, blah,"
that when I saw you,

like, still,
and you weren't listening

I literally got
a little lump in my throat,

'cause I looked at you,
and I was like,

I could tell you were hurt.
- No, it did bother me.

I thought it was just, like,
crossing a line.

It wasn't necessary,
and it's like, really?

It's really important for me,
no matter where I go to,

and when I leave
to have no regrets.

Kenya pushed buttons in me
that brought me back.

I knew I already had
two friends,

and I was excited
to make more friends.

and just try to make things

that we think about considering
giving Kenya the master.

toward the end of the trip

that didn't really
sit right with me,

because I think
she may have had a hand

in kind of changing
some people's perception of me.

volleyball day, said to me,

that you and I are friends."

- I probably talked to Melissa
the most before the trip.

And then, all of a sudden,
it just changed

once she and Kenya connected.

And I didn't know why until
Melissa shared that with me.

And then it made sense.

I'm hurt, but hey, now I know.

I got no love

My mom--she has never
acknowledged me my whole life.

Through therapy I learned that,

that is a direct correlation
on my mother's situation.

Because she was never
emotionally available to me.

This is the one I've been

- Literally, like, all of you
asked me about her.

- Everybody called me up

- I am a very forgiving person.

I don't really hold on
to grudges

when people are accountable
for their actions.

I actually respect
that more than anything else.

I won't hold a grudge

The only thing that would
bring us backwards

is the same behavior...

No one is perfect, but you have
to show that you're growing.

Not going berserk on the plane
on you, for me,

that was a lot of growth.

I feel like it's like
you've come to a place
