This was captured by a Navajo
family on their ranch at

the reservation in New Mexico.

And they believe this is
evidence of a skinwalker.

Ooh, skinwalkers.

I've always wanted to
investigate skinwalkers.

Skinwalkers are a sacred
legend to the Navajo.

In modern culture,
they're sometimes thought of

like cryptids, as though
they're some sort of creature.

Some people treat them like
spirits or entities.

In the original Navajo lore,
they're seen as humans with

dark supernatural powers,
specifically a terrifying

ability to shape-shift.

Encounters with skinwalkers
have been recorded for

generations in
the Navajo Nation.

Those sightings continue to
this day.

And this family here,
they are not alone,

because those sightings are
on the rise.

You could make the argument
that the skinwalker

is the most feared monster
in all of America.

This strange,
shape-shifting evil,

sometimes humanoid,
sometimes a beast,

has fueled our nightmares
for decades.

But it is here, in the sacred
lands of the Navajo Nation,

that the dark legend
first began.

Established in 1898,
the Navajo Nation

is the largest
Native American reservation

in the United States,

spanning more
than 27,000 square miles across

Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico.

Surrounded by
four mountains,

the Navajo people
believe that

all land within
these boundaries

is spiritually protected.

And this protection is vital
because of

the dreaded skinwalker.

Traditionally known
as yee naldlooshii,

these mysterious monsters are
rarely discussed with outsiders

because there's a fear that
simply speaking of them

will incur their wrath.

The Navajo lore that has been
passed on says skinwalkers are

evil witches or corrupt
medicine men who have

sacrificed those closest to them

in exchange for dark powers,

supernatural speed,
and the ability to shapeshift

into animals like
wolves or coyotes.

According to Navajo stories,
the skinwalker's goal is to

inflict harm, illness,
and misfortune on others,

using sinister magical
curses to attack

and even kill their victims.

And now reported encounters
with skinwalkers across

the Navajo Nation are
on the rise,

particularly in the remote
corner of the reservation in

northwestern New Mexico.

A recent eyewitness describes
a human-like creature

impossibly running alongside
a speeding bus.

Meanwhile, many others

regularly report hearing
strange whistling

and blood-curdling screams
after dark.

And now, a Navajo family
believes they are being hunted

by the skinwalker and think
they captured it on video.

The skinwalker story captivates
us all, but what's the truth

behind the legend?

Is this evil
really out there today,

stalking the Navajo Nation?

So, what do you think?

Well, I should start by saying
I did have my own very

memorable experience, not far
from the Navajo Nation in

Utah's Uinta Valley.
- That's right.

- What you saw from the vehicle.
- Yes.

That looked like they had
fur on them.

Skinwalker?

I don't know what it was,
but I can confirm that

the thought of that thing still
freaks me out to this day.

And with this new footage,
I mean, it is equally

compelling, but just as easily
could be misidentified.

I mean, maybe it's a cloud.

Maybe it's a refraction
of the lens.

A cloud?
I have never seen

a cloud two feet off the ground
moving like that.

So what, you think it's all
smoke and mirrors?

No, I'm not saying
it's a hoax, and these stories

do go back centuries.

And sure, there could be some
mystery out there.

I'm just not certain this
footage proves it.

Heather?

Well, maybe it's more than
just stories.

I mean, what do we know?

Think about how famous this
legend is.

This story has legs,
and the Navajo have been here

a heck of a lot longer than us.

So, who are we to say if
a skinwalker is real or not

until we go and investigate
it ourselves?

what's going on here,

real evidence to substantiate
this terrifying legend.

It's a five-hour flight
from New York

to Albuquerque, New Mexico,

and then several hours' drive
to reach the border

of the Navajo Nation.

You know what road we're
driving on?

This road used to be called
Highway 666.

- No way.

It's true.
And it lived up to its name.

Disappearances, fatalities,

all sorts
of strange occurrences.

So much so that they actually
called it the Devil's Highway.

So they had to rename it.

Yeah, I guess, you know,
Route 491 sounds

a lot less sinister.
- Yeah.

But you got to admit, this is
the perfect road

to lead us to our destination.

We are now in
the Navajo Nation.

Phil and I head west across
the reservation to meet

the family who shared
their shocking video of

a supposed skinwalker
with Gates.

- Hi.
- Hello.

- Yes.

- Hi, good to meet
you guys, Phil.

Mother and son Brenda
and Ryan Harris grew up on

the reservation and believe
a skinwalker is

stalking their home.

We have seen this
extraordinary video.

That is why we are here.

So how did it all start
for you?

My son and his cousin were
outside playing late at night,

and they just happened to look
down, and they came

across this big footprint there.

- That's what they found outside
in the back.
- Huh.

- Whoa.
- How big was this?

It's a little over
18 inches long.

- 18 inches long?
- That's huge.

That's definitely unusual
marking in the ground there.

What did you think could have
left a footprint like that?

I didn't know what it was.
I wanted to find out.

So a week later, I bought
a video camera.

And I told her, I was like,
"Let's see

if we catch anything."

I remember we were

fast-forwarding through all
of it.

- And then I saw the thing.
- Were you afraid?

I was,
because we're just scared.

Like, why is it here?
We don't know.

So that's when I took
the footage

and showed it to my dad.

And right off the bat,
he knew what it was.

- He goes, "That's a skinwalker."
- Without a doubt.

- Without a doubt.
- I mean,
that's terrifying.

Not only that, when I was
taking out the trash, I saw it.

What do you mean you saw it?

So I climbed up on the ladder.

Then I met eye-to-eye with it.

And it was just standing there,
looking at me.

You're saying you came
face-to-face with a skinwalker?

- Mm-hmm.
- What happened?

- It blackened itself.
- Oh.

It took the form of a beast,
and then it formed

into the wind.

It scared me.
I was petrified.

I don't know how to explain it,
but my heart stopped.

- Hm.
- I'll never forget it.

So we're talking about
something that started physical

and then perhaps moved into
the spiritual world?

Possibly.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly
what form

the skinwalker will take.

They're the ones that pick what
they want to manifest into.

So it could be a wolf,

it could be a coyote,
it could be a bear.

I believe they're dangerous.
You know, they can hurt you.

All I ask is that you guys
don't whistle around here.

- Yeah, don't whistle.

In the Native culture,
you don't ever whistle at night

because you're inviting them to
come, and they may come out

when you're not even ready.

the Harris' property,

I want to try and replicate
the placement and framing

of Ryan's video camera.

I've got some ideas about what
may have actually been captured

and possibly misidentified.

match it.

So I've got this recording.

Now, I wanna see if I can
debunk that video.

Of course you do.

- A fog machine?
- A fog machine.

Now that's just
fogging ridiculous.

Now imagine there was a car
there that

suddenly accelerated.
What would it leave behind?

- Exhaust.

OK, so when it comes out in
those puffs,

you almost had me.

It really does look like
the start of that video.

It doesn't turn into
a canine shape, Torres.

It just dissipates
into nothing.

And that video clearly showed
the clouds turning into

a wolf-like creature
and jumping off.

- Well, I'm out of theories.
- Well, it was a hot start.

I gotta say, this one has got
me a little stumped.

I couldn't find a logical
explanation for what was

captured on the Harris' video
yet, so I'm leaving a camera

running to record more data.
Who knows?

Maybe it'll catch
something extraordinary.

All right, whatever was in
that video,

it was heading thataway--
that's where we gotta go.

Agreed.

The Harris property is right
next to an area of isolated

wilderness that borders
the San Juan River.

If any creature,
known or unknown, is out here,

this wilderness might be

the perfect place for it
to hide.

So what's the plan?

So I think we need to set up
some perimeters.

I have these shotgun tripwires
that will let us know

very loudly if something goes
over that string.

We will know if something's
moving around here.

OK, well, while you're doing
that physical tripwire,

I want to set up
spiritual tripwires,

because as our witness
just told us,

not only are skinwalkers
a physical being,

they can also be spiritual
as well.

All right, well, then we'll
have our bases covered.

And hey, do not forget,
there could be potentially

mountain lions
and bears and coyotes.

Skinwalkers.

Right, very dangerous animals
out here.

To secure the perimeter,
I head north to set up

a tripwire that will make
a sound on physical contact.

Trap is set,
we got a live wire here.

Meanwhile, Heather activates
an EMF tripwire to the south.

If I'm walking right
beside this.

I'm not gonna set it off.

You have to either touch it
with quite some pressure

or something of the spiritual
realm has to interact with it.

So if I get any hits on this
EMF tripwire, we know that

whatever that creature was is
of the spiritual realm.

So I've calibrated this where

anything warm like me
will show up white.

Everything else is looking
pretty red or yellow.

If there's any animals
out there,

I'm hoping this can help me see
it before it sees me.

OK, because we're looking for
animals, I'm gonna keep my eyes

out through night vision
binoculars, but also because

we're looking for spirits,
I'm gonna keep one eye on my K2

to see if I get any EMF hits.

OK, tripwire is still solid.

But the dogs are barking.

What was that?

That was weird.

That was like
a glowing orb, almost.

There's no bugs out here,
it's too cold.

It was not right in front

almost very similar to

the start of that video,
but it appeared

and disappeared so quickly.

I don't know what that was.

Something was definitely there.

And like, I'm not alone.

I do not see anything
on the FLIR.

not to whistle on

their property, but we are far
from their property.

We are closer to the river.

I just wonder what's going to
happen if I whistle.

based on the FLIR it was

maybe four or so feet tall.

What this is telling me
is that whatever

we picked up across the river

was a physical, living,
real animal.

But remember, just because
it's a physical animal

doesn't mean that
it's not a skinwalker.

Whatever it is, I want to bag
this so we can test it

and ID it.

What I don't get is,

whatever we have been chasing
all night long,

why did it lead us here?

Why did it lead us to the water
and then disappear?

I mean, what

are we chasing?

Where did it go?

And why did I decide
to whistle?

Now that, Phil, is probably
the million-dollar question.

I set up a trail camera along

the river's edge,
in case whatever

we were chasing returns.

Last night's investigation

left us with more questions
than answers.

So while Phil tracks down more
eyewitnesses, I want to explore

the origins of
the skinwalker legend.

I'm meeting with
Navajo historian Eugene Joe,

who has agreed to do something
that rarely happens,

share his tribe's ancestral
knowledge about skinwalkers

with outsiders.

I want to go all the way back.

Can you tell me about
the history of skinwalkers?

They call them
the Night Warriors.

Tlee naabaahii is how
you say it in Navajo.

They were given a power to
protect the sacred ways of

the Navajo people,
but then something happened

and there was a conflict.

That's when the evil decided to
take over.

So Night Warriors started out
good as protectors

and then turned evil
and became skinwalkers.

Yes.

What do skinwalkers want?

They want to be more powerful.

They like to channel
curses, hex,

taboos on homes to
destroy a family.

They don't want to see
you become wealthy.

They want to see you fall,
because that in turn makes them

feel like they have more power.
- Yes.

I have a little drawing that
I did.

They're just like ordinary
people, just like you and I.

And they...

They just paint their face for
night and for day protection.

That was what it was for.

So if we saw a skinwalker
today, it could have similar

black and white face paint.
- Yes.

A few years back, I was
face-to-face with one.

It was a woman.

Her face was black and white.

I said, means,
"What do you want?"

Don't bother me.

If you're here for evil,
go away.

She didn't know what to say.

And covered her face.
And that was it.

- Were you afraid?
- I can't show my weakness.

Because you spoke to this
skinwalker, you were able to

protect yourself.
- Right.

It's just like a mind game,
like a chess game.

of the roads here.

About 10 feet away, I saw
something crossing the road.

It was just walking like a dog
would be walking on all fours,

but it didn't look right.

Could it have been a dog that
was maybe hit by a car

and was injured?

I don't think so,
because the face itself wasn't

the face of a dog.
It had a human face.

That sounds
absolutely terrifying.

you're out there alone

While I was there, I took
a photo of my niece.

A couple days later, I was
going through the pictures,

and I thought, hmm,
there's something not right

about that picture.

This is what I saw.

Wow.
So that part is your niece.

But then in the background,
there's that.

It's a skinwalker.

Wow.
Creepy.

- Yeah, you could see
the human face there.
- Yeah, yeah.

I mean, it looks like a fur
hood and like skinny fur legs.

Right.

This looks like how people
describe a skinwalker.

You must have been afraid?

I had chills going down
my back.

I have to wonder.

We had this investigation
last night,

and I kept feeling like
something was watching me.

And I couldn't see anything.

Before your very eyes, they can
disappear in front of you.

See, they can vaporize
themselves in different ways.

That's why if you're going

looking for a skinwalker...

be found?

from spiritual people

and the elements themselves.

They get to be able to hide
inside of those caves and do

ungodly things in there.

and what they want to do,

they can kill somebody
if they wanted to.

Skinwalkers are very dangerous

this cave.

And then rocks fell on me.

And I asked my REM pod if
you were in danger.

And then the REM pod lit up.

- No.
- Yeah.

And we got confirmation that
there are three skinwalkers

in this very cave.

This place is
a skinwalker hideout.

And like I said,
they can really

hurt somebody
if they wanted to.

I think that we need
to leave this cave,

we have to do one more thing.

My team came to
the Navajo Nation to investigate

the truth behind
the skinwalker legend.

And while Phil and Heather
never came face-to-face with

a skinwalker themselves,
a careful review of the photos

from the so-called
Skinwalker Canyon

revealed unsettling anomalies.

In this photo, a strange ball
of light appears ominously

in the background.

And it's strikingly similar to
the orb Heather observed

at the Harris property.
- What was that?

And then there's this photo.

It appears to be just an image
of the night sky, but look more

closely at
the mist-like formation.

It bears a disturbing
resemblance to the eerie shape

in the Harris family's video,
the one that brought us to

the Navajo Nation in
the first place.

But not all evidence pointed to
something sinister.

- Not at first glance, anyway.
- Check this out.

Lab results confirmed
the hair Phil found

down by the San Juan River
next to the Harris' home

belonged to a fox.

Then, later that night,
our trail cameras recorded one

in that very same spot.

We shared these findings with
Shanclen, and far from being

reassured, he was
deeply concerned.

He reminded us that,
according to Navajo lore,

skinwalkers regularly move

between the physical
and the spiritual.

He believes the entity Phil
and Heather chased but were

unable to find may have
vanished because it transformed

into an everyday animal.

Whatever was back here,

I don't see it anymore.

Perhaps into the fox we then
captured on camera.

Or perhaps into a bird.

the mist, and the animals all
raises a chilling possibility.

hunted the skinwalker,

perhaps the skinwalker
