were deserted.

Everybody was in watching the television.

The tension was enormous.

Cohen: That was the only time
that I,ve ever really felt nervous,

that noise
will stick with me forever.

There was not only 100,000 people
in the ground.

But the rest of the English nation,

I usually went out
behind Bobby Moore,

he didn,t seem to be sweating.

Hurst" there was something
that he had as a leader.

More than just the football.

Rob Jenkins, he had the aura of a prince.

if only they
really knew the truth,

how much more
would he have been revered?

He was a proper hero.

Bobby and I grew up
in the same part of east London.

Some of our most amusing
early encounters.

We used to find ourselves
at the old llford Palais,

which was the old Palais De Dense then

Redknapp, big Lee was the bouncer there.

He used to get US
up the from of the queue.

The girls used to put their handbags down.
Dance round the handbags,

didn,t they, in them days, you know,

I could understand it with me.

But I couldn,t understand why
he as well as me would be standing

up against the wall like wallflowers
and could never get a dance.

I mean, he was adorns

he was a bit nervous
about going and asking anyone.

When I was just coming up
to my 16th birthday,

I,d gone to the llford Palais

and there was a song called
Blue Moon, which was playing:

And this young man with blond hair

had come over to me and asked me
to dance, and it was Bobby.

I thought he was a bit square.

But I wasn,t terribly impressed
by the fact he was a footballer.

I said, "no. I can,t go out with you."

But one day I was with my mother
in a tax/ going along llford

and there was a coffee bar
and he was sitting in ,at.

And I said, "look mum.
That,s the young man who asked me our."

And she waned across, and she looked at
him and she said,

"he looks great. Bring him home for tea."

He was a young kid doing Tuesday and
Thursday night training at West Ham,

and at the end of the year
they were taking 10, 12 places:

For apprentices or ground staff,
as they probably were called then:.

And Bobby looked like
he was not gonna be selected,

it was between Bobby and another lad,

there were mixed opinions
of him initially.

There were the questions
of his natural talent and pace.

Not great in the air,
not quick, not particularly big.

I always refer to Bobby
when I talk about him,

he came as...
He was quite a green youngster.

If you go back a few years, when
he was a kid, at barking schoolboys:.

You look at the pictures of him
there, he,s a tubby little schoolboy.

Eamonn Andrews: Your physique
earned you a nickname.

Do you remember what it was?

-Can I say it here?
Andrews, yes

or dare I? Yeah, it was tubby.

- "Tubby"
-tubby and fatso.

Andrews" tubby and fatso. Yes
-Tina: Fatso.

We went out one night, you know:
We were chatting about football,

and he said without Malcolm
he wouldn,t have been a player.

Malcolm Allison was such a powerful figure
a! West Ham.

He said, "you,ve gotta sign mm.
I,m telling you, he,s different class."

They listened to him.
So West Ham took Bobby on.

He got on the bus
and never stopped

asking me questions all the way.

And he said to me, "mr Allison, what,s
the most important thing about football?

"What,s the most important thing to do?"

I said, "knowing what you,re gonna do
with the bah, before you get it."

We used to have a practise match

and then he,d stop it and say:
,Close your eyes."

And he,d ask individual players
where everybody else was,

and Moore-o was fantastic
at knowing exactly on the field:.

Immediately his eyes were closed:

Where the left winger was:
Where the right back was,

the centre half two yards behind him,
and Joe Bloggs is 10 yards over there.

Bobby obviously
had the intelligence to listen and /earn

what Malcolm was telling him
and to put it into practise,

after training,
he would go back to the little cafe

up the road from upton park
with Malcolm

and get the salt and pepper pots
out on the table,

go through the moves
and the strategies

and where people were out of place.

And he just loved Bobby
and Bobby responded to Malcolm

and he swears that without Malcolm
he wouldn,t have made it.

If all your life you,ve been dreaming
of playing in West Ham,s first team

and that dream gets realised:
It,s an absolute defining moment.

From a fan,s point of view I think
that,s what relates them to the club,

a local boy has come good
and ls playing for his local ream.

Standing room that side.

Ticket holders? Tickets?
Ail got tickets?

When I arrived at the ground

about an hour to an hour and a half
before the kick-off,

I found that all the gates
had been dosed.

I had to fight my way
into the dressing rooms,

and I thought at one stage
that let alone play the game,

I won,t even see it.

Thereb, be nerves.
There,d be butterflies in the stomach.

There,d be doubts whether
you can perform at this level.

The first night
I actually did go out with him,

was the second match he ever played,
it might have been Nottingham forest.

He apparently had had a poor game

and the after write-up in the paper
was pretty grim,

so he bought as many as he could
and destroyed them.

He was hurt
and I was trying to bolster his ego.

He was a perfectionist, Bobby.

Whatever he did, he had to do it
to the best of his ability.

Interviewer, football came very easy
to you. You didn,t have to work too hard.

Moore: I don,t like the way when you say
you didn,t have to work too hard.

It was bloody hard work all the time.
To be truthful.

Tina, he would train tremendously hard
every Clay.

The first team players were always
prepared to work that much harder

to improve their own game
and to improve the team.

And when you grow up in that environment,
you just want to copy.

My life was totally committed, 11 months
of the year basically, to football.

You became aware of Bobby
as he got picked for the under 23s.

And you recognised that
this guy could play.

Commentator" leaving it for Moore,
Moore going through,

a lovely little move, and goal number three

Cohen". He had Ron greenwood. Who did
wonders, of course. For West Ham,

and I think he did wonders for Bobby Moore.

Commentator" a beautiful piece of play
there by Moore.

Redknapp Ron greenwood was so far
in front of anybody else, really.

He was the best coach I,ve certainly
ever been fortunate enough to meet.

Commentator: Musgrove,
and it,s in the

Winterbottom also was very good:
I think: In those days for Bobby.

I think he gave him
a great deal of confidence,

a surprise to everyone,
very young at the time,

Walter Winterbottom decided to take
him to Chile for the ,62 World Cup.

Not having any
full international experience,

I thought I was going along
for the ride

and to see what
a full international tour was like.

They weren,t letting on to him
that it might be more than that

because maybe he,d have become
a bit overawed

by the prospect of playing against
the great Brazilians and so on.

Nice tackle by Moore.

I noticed how he took responsibility
when he was first picked.

Moore very much
in the game in his first international,

seen a lot of the bah
in the first three minutes.

Even at 20-odd,
he was taking corners.

Things that normally
you allow the senior players to do.

And that,s just
a pan of his character.

Commentator Moore, onto Greaves.

A chance here for Greaves. A great chance.

Jimmy Greaves was a phenomenon

commentator Greaves,

and Greaves again.
Number three for Greaves,

number four for England.

Bob and I become roommates.

We knew each other as teenagers.

He was a barking boy.
I was a Dagenham schoolboy,

and we literally had a month
tn this corrugated iron mountain shack.

And we never ever thought
we,d get home from that trip,

we were very lonely.
And there was a big bond between US.

I think we were united on that tour.

Commentator" it,s a corner to Brazil
on the left wing.

It was always a sheer delight
to play against the Brazilians

and I think
whenever you had the chance

of pitting your wits against them
on an international football pitch,

you knew that that was something
very, very special.

It was even in those early days,

commentator Garrincha.

Ifs a goal, a beautiful goal, by Garrincha!

Brazil have beaten eng/and,
so reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

Tina, Bobby was a very romantic man,

he was very caring,
I mean, right from the word "go?

He was really charming.

I would go to bed and he would
slip notes underneath my pillow

or I,d put my hand in a dressing gown
and there would be like a love note.

We went out for about a year
and then he asked me to get roamed.

When we went to the church.
There were photographers outside,

quite a crowd of people,

and I was shocked that they,d come
to see Bobby Moore get married.

He was quite unique.
He used to do my haw.

When I used to have really blonde hair,
he would do my roots.

He was like my mate.

England will win the World Cup
in 1966.

We didn,t really look at it like that
at the time.

They were aware that this could become

a very important moment
in their lives.

It now gives me great pleasure

to declare open the eighth
wand football championship.

Powell". For the opening game
against Uruguay,

the country was not yet alive
and throbbing and demanding.

The game itself
was a nought-nought draw,

it,s always a difficult first game
as the home ream.

Against the Mexicans:
Bobby Charlton got the ball:

Progressed into thew haw,

shootings a feeling,

Bobby Charlton had this son of
feeling that he was gonna hit it.

And it flew in the top corner.

That ball entered the goal egg-shaped.

Just the fact that he,d
hit it like he hit it

and he,d scored it like he scored:.

All of a sudden, "hey hold on a minute.
We can win this."

From then on in.
The lads started to believe

that they nan a chance of winning it.

Tina, Bobby wanted to have a life
outside of football,

and I don,t think Ron greenwood

at West Ham could really understand that.

Redknapp, he loved a night out
with the tads, that,s for sure

drink to run and run to drink.
That,s what he did,

and he trained like a demon

sometimes he,d come in on Sunday
mom with his dinner suit on still,

straight from a night out.

He used to come to the ground
on a Sunday.

Put his tracksuit on,
the bin linen the black bag.

And then he,d go and do 12 taps.

He,d tram harder than anybody.
He,d sweat it out of him.

About 11:00 he,d come out
and he,d be immaculately dressed.

Then go up the pub.

Hurst in ,64, the biggest game of the cup
run was against Manchester united.

Hurst we won 3-1.

For Ron greenwood,

it was the greatest achievement
of his career to that date

he always thought from that moment on
he lost Bobby Moore

to all the showbiz types who Bobby
seemed to attract like a magnet.

We all came through
the youth team at West Ham together

all homegrown players.

Number five, and Hurst.
And Moore!

Are we going to have a sensational ending?

It,s a West Ham united
have won the fa cup.

If I had any heroes,
it was Bobby Moore,

who actually had done
more for the east end,

forget about the football.
But the mags of the east end.

Brian dear, it was great for the east end,
it was great for West Ham,

and that was our life.
It wasn,t the west end.

We were east end boys.
That,s where we,d go and have a drink.

They all worshipped him.

He,d walk in and the
place used to light up.

I had an auntie used to come
to the games and she absolutely adored him.

She said he had the aura of a prince

and she used to shiver all over
just looking at him.

Argentina were probably
stronger than Brazil.

We were geared up for a big fight.
And Alf didn,t shy away from it.

He made the remarks about animals:

Which was, you know, not well received
in the blazered circles of the game.

Alf Ramsey" we have stall to produce
our best.

And this best is not possible until
we meet the right type of opposition:.

And that is a team that comes out to
play football and not act as animals.

Germany played Argentina
in their group in the earlier round.

And that was probably one of the nastiest
games you,d ever wish to see.

If I invite someone to my house.
I don,t treat him as an animal.

As animals...
Animals.

We,ve got people here
who aren,t gonna play fair

this is the home of fair play.

It sent the nation into that game
with determination.

They could sense the drums beating.

They were shocking out there:
Especially the captain, Rattin.

Hunter, they were up to all sons of things.

Hurst, probably one of
the most aggressive, tough,

bordering on violent games
I think I,ve ever played in,

you know. All of a sudden,
your mind is with something else.

We not about winning the game.

It,s about getting your own back
on an individual player.

Rattin is dicing with death.
He,s arguing with the referee.

Aw needed someone of the stature

the personality.
The commanding presence:

But above all
the cold, calculating intelligence

to be himself on the pitch.

It was Bobby,s character.
It was Bobby,s intelligence of the game,

Bobby,s ability. Although
Alf might not always have enjoyed it,

to change things
while the match was going on

if he didn,t think it was going properly,

he wasn,t/list a lieutenant.
He saw Bobby as himself on the pitch,

hunter" nothing ever phased Bobby.

Bobby just distanced himself,

compartmentalized the thing,
let them get on with it.

And Rattin,s in trouble.
He,s off! Rattin goes off

the referee went, ?off,"
and he looked down at him

,cause he was quite tall
and the referee was only small:

And he goes...
Shook his head like that

he wouldn,t go off.

Magnificent player,
but he just couldn,t shut up.

Banks, he waved to his players,
"come on. We,re all going off."

He wanted to take
the players off the field.

?If you take your team off,
you forfeit the game,

"England will go through."

Commentator" Bobby Moore wants to be able
to take the free kick and get on with it.

But it,s clever
because he didn,t get ruffled

and then he went on to play his normal game

that was Moore-av
that was just typical of how the man was,

Bobby Moore handled that stuff
really well.

I think that,s the key
to being a captain, not to get riled.

Commentator" this is Moore.

It,s interesting to have
three or four players from one team:

Who,ve played with each other
since they were kids,

and Martin,s cross was just inch perfect.

And there,s a

the near-post cross, a West Ham goal.

And the whistle
has gone and England have won.

Alf was absolutely incensed,
he lust came up to me and he said.

?George, you,re not changing
that shirt with this pf layer."

Words to that effect. I got the message,

captain,s got sent off, lost 1-0,
can,t get hold of an England shirt.

They ain,t best pleased.

Ah of a sudden through
the plateglass door comes a chair.

Crash. Glass all over the mace,

they wanted to fight US in the tunnel.

Well, I think they wanted to fight:
But I think they would have lost.

Bobby groomed himself, his manners.
He watched people. He learned.

He was aware that he
carried a responsibility

of being the captain of England.

Moore that,ll do.

He was Roy of the Rovers.
He was Dan Dare.

I think he personified what a captain
in those days should be:

A leader

you just looked up to him
as a player and as a person.

He wasn,t a captain
that shouted and screamed at people.

I think if he just lifted one eyebrow:
You knew you were in trouble.

But that was his style
on and off the field.

Yeah. He had that look

I remember playing at Leeds,
getting sent off one day in the first half.

As I walked past Moore, he went to me...

He used to do that with his arms.

I can see him
stood on the halfway line now.

And, you know, that was enough. Like,

It,s obvious that Portugal:
Who we play tonight,

are a very attacking side

and, um: You know, we,re looking forward
to playing against them a great deal.

Bobby had a presence,

on the pitch. You felt that that
presence was, you know, very necessary

to his game and to the players around him.

England:
England: England. England!

Eus?bio was never allowed
to rum at all.

Except to play the ball out wide.

Nobby played mm
completely out of the game,

Bobby knew that the players
knew what they were doing.

But if somebody made a mistake:
He made sure that he was around

or somebody else was around
to rectify it.

He was the best captain that I
think I,ve ever. I,ve ever played with.

He wouldn,t just play ms own game.

He helped others,
while he was our there.

Hurst, it says a lot for. For Moore-o
that he was comfortably the captain

in a group of people with a rot
of very, very strong personalities

a tough bunch of boys.

Now it,s Wilson. Hunt

Charlton he scores!

And it,s Hurst.
Fine bit of running by Hurst.

Hurst. Back to Charlton and it,s in!

And that could be the goal
that puts England an the final.

England are in the final of the World Cup.
It is all over.

Eus?bio was to leave the pitch
in tears, emotionally distraught.

Because when peke
went out of the tournament,

he was the superstar of the tournament.

A Wembley crowd
has never been like this.

England! England! England!

I was about seven months pregnant
with Roberta in 1964

and Bobby had noticed
that he,d had an injury,

and he had a very swollen testicle
and very, very painful.

They operated on him
and he said to the nurse.

"I need to phone my wife"
and he rang me and he said, ?it,s ah over?

and I said, ?how are you??
"Everything,s fine."

The surgeon was waiting for me

and he said, "Tina, I,ve got really, really
bad news? ll was cancer

I was devastated.

I didn,t know whether or hot...
Oh, dear.

I didn,t know whether
or not he,d live or die.

Bobby was absolutely demoralized, gutted.

He didn,t know whether or not
he would play football again.

It was the most horrendous. Horrendous time

we used to sit at home and cry

about the fact that he,d lost

what he thought was part of his manhood.

He was proud and he was embarrassed.
He was humiliated.

I had a major time
bolstering his ego again.

When we went to buy swimming shoos,
I used to go with him

to make sure that nothing was revealed.

He pleaded with me not to tell anyone.

Hurst, wasn,t really aware.

It was kept very, very quiet.

I didn,t know,
,cause usually in football circles:

You know, it gets round.

No, I didn,t have any clue at all.

In fact. I was quite shocked
when I heard about it

the media were very good in those days.

They didn,t witch-hunt people that much.

But in those days
you didn,t write the word "cancer"

and so we put in the paper

that Bobby had gone into hospital
for a groin injury

and we didn,t mention the fact
that he,d had a testicle cut off.

?Nr. One day Ron greenwood came in.

Martin Peters filled Bobby,s place.

He said, "yeah, Bobby, don,t worry.
Martin Peters is doing such a great job."?

And I,ve baked at Ron greenwood. Like,

if I could have killed him with my eyes,
I would have done.

And I thought this is the last thing...

And Bobby. I could see
has eyes glazed over,

and I know
what Ron was tr Yang to do was say,

?look, Bobby, he,s doing a good job.?

but what he really wanted to hear

was that, "we miss our captain
and we want you back."

It was very very diff/cult,
he was only a 22-year-old.

It was a terrible time for him.

He had to go every
three to six months for check-ups.

It was the start of his being
an insomniac as well.

You must lie awake at night wondering

- if the cancers still in your body.
- Man; That,s right.

But Bobby would never ever
share that with anybody.

He didn,t want you to know his weaknesses:.

And I think his major weakness was

that he used to worry
himself sick at night.

He was an insomniac. Terrible insomniac.

/ used to go the club doctor,
old dr bell

and. Uh. Yd say.
"Look. Bobby couldn,t sleep.

"Make your prescription our
for some Mogadon. Please, uh, doc.?

and. Uh: That was it

and he always had a sleeper
on a Friday night before a game.

I used to get up and if he...
Before we had Roberta,

in the two months
before she was born.

He,d be gone,
he,d be sort of pounding round the streets.

I was a bad baby.
I think I cried a for and had colic.

And he,d been unwell
just before I,d been born

and obviously that was a period
of great anxiety for them.

So he wasn,t sleeping well.

So, I think he used to kind of
look after me through the night.

They,re very lonely
and kind of solitary and isolating,

so I think from a very early age
we bonded.

And / was a real. Real daddy,s girl,

I adored him.

I think lots of fathers
and daughters have that bond

and we had a very special bond.

I think once he realised
that he was going to survive,

that he still felt manly:.

That he could still play the game
that he loved,

I think he wanted to prove to himself

that he could be the best.

Not that he could be
the best that there was

and now west ham here
in the European cup winners cup final.

When Bob played well,
everyone played well.

Hurst" we changed our format a bit.
Bobby Moore played as a sweeper,

we were very difficult
to beat defensively because of that.

Ron loved a time bit of flamboyance

and we had cane blanche
to go where we wanted.

It was just an amazing game.

We just moved around
and we dropped in places,

commentator Sealey free on the right.
This could be a goal for West Ham,

yes, a goal and Sealey has scored!

I got fouled outside the box

and Bob was a great passer of the ball.

Here he comes.

Like, 30, 40 yards and he used to
smash balls into you.

It got knocked down and we were two up.

Commentator Sealey has made it two!

West Ham have won
the European cup winners cup.

Fantastic performance by West Ham.

And Bobby Moore, who knows,
in just over a year,s time.

He might be standing on the same
spot with the worm cup in his hands.

Tina, the build-up was phenomenal,

you walked out.
It was quite electric,

Jimmy Greaves was ref! Out
of the England side.

Everybody was talking about it.

Jimmy Greaves,s record
as a goal scorer

is absolutely phenomenal.

Everybody in this country knew what
a great player Jimmy Greaves was.

I know his record off by heart,

160-odd games for Chelsea,
130 goals, in four seasons, 16 to 20.

360 games for spurs, 260-odd goals.

Hat-trick in has debut

57 games for England. 44 goals.

It was a huge decision for Alf.
Of course. To have Jimmy out,

because he couldn,t put him
on the bench, there were no subs

and people don,t realise that.

You,re leaving one of the greatest goal
scorers out in a World Cup final.

Tina poor Jimmy Greaves
was absolutely incense/able.

I mean, Bobby was really upset for him.

Cohen. He,s my oldest friend in football,
Jimmy Greaves.

We,ve known each other since we were 15.

I have never been able to approach
him on that particular score.

Tina, and I think he found him packing
the morning of the cup final,

and he put his arm round him and tried
to console him as best he could.

I think Bobby was empathetic.
He understood what he was feeling,

Powell they were strong
right through the team.

That great German ethic.

They,re never beaten
until the final whistle blows.

And they had the genius
of Franz Beckenbauer.

It was quire a quiet dressing room.

Players were focused on theirselves
and thew own preparation

and what we were about to do.

Redknapp, there was no one on the streets
that day.

Everybody was in watching the television.

You,ve heard the bell go
in the dressing room.

It sounded like a Siren.

Walking out into that tunnel uh.
And just standing there,

uh: Just for a very, very short while
it was. Oh, dear,

it was, uh...
Like nothing on earth,

the tension was honestly enormous,
it really was,

England!

Hurst" I remember thinking,
"there,s 100000 people up there."

Not only 100.000 people in the ground:

But the rest of the
English nation were there:

Hoping that we were gonna win.

And I thought to myself,
"we just cannot afford to lose this today."

England!

The crowd, it was almost like
flames coming back down the tunnel:

You know, starting from the ground,
back down to where we were.

And that noise
will always stick with me forever,

and, uh, talking about it today, the hairs
on the back of the neck still stand up.

Cohen, the noise blew even/thing
out oi, your mind. You couldn,t think.

That was the only time
that I,d ever realty felt nervous,

I usually went out behind Bobby Moore.

He didn,t seem to be sweating.

It was perhaps a calming effect.

He would certainly not give the impression
that he was scared of anything at ail,

there are big players, good players:
Who can freeze on big occasions.

That would never happen to Moore-o,

I think the bigger the game,
the better he played.

As soon as that whistle went...

He played exactly how he would normally do,

oh,

he was nice and calm
and he was gonna get on with his job

Lift them if they weren,t doing too well

and calm them down it they were
getting a bit too excited.

It,s back to halter.

A goal,.
West Germany have scored.

Twelve minutes gone.

You know you,ve just got to push
that aside and carry on, you know,

it,s important to get
back in the game quickly.

People talk about Moore-e as a sweeper.

Moore-o got fouled
in their last third of the field.

Rather than retaliate, he backs oft:
Puts the ball down, looks up.

He stutters to take it, probably knew
I wasn,t in quite the right position.

Ron greenwood used to say,

"your mind,s gotta be
like an electric buzzsaw."

You can be in a difficult situation,

but time stands still
while you pick your moment.

To me. That sums up Bobby Moore.

Hurst goes up.
Tilkovvski loses it.

Commentator: Hurst.

And a chance...

I,d love to do that again.

Let alone it,s the final of the World Cup.

the man who scored the goal,

which could wet! Win the World Cup
for England.

Bobby Moore did exactly the same
as I did.

We,re going like this to the referee:
You know, it,s a hand ball.

He,s given them the goal.

You know, it,s hit his arm,
r,s a free kick for US.

We were winning, got the World Cup:
And he lets that go, you know.

Bobby Moore was that angry.

H,s a foul

anyway, he gave the goal.

Big Jackie says
that it,s the only time

that Bobby ever swore at him
in the course of a match

Jack doesn,t particularly
want to accept the blame:

But Bobby turned round to him and said:
?Don,t ever effing do that again."

Hurst" losing the goal
just a! The end of the game

I think was hugely disappointing.

Put the World Cup final in context,
it was only 20 years after the war.

For a lot of people, it was slightly
more than a game of football.

Bobby was one of the war children.

He and I were born during the war.

Bombs dropped on US.

The children of that era did grow up

with that as very much part of their DNA.

Football really became,
as it was subsequently described,

the opiate of the masses,

as a relief from the horrors of war

and the privations
of the post-war years.

People went to football
to get away from that.

1 cam remember not playing.

You,d come home with
the sole off your feet.

There wasn,t too many places you could go,
it was very dangerous.

I remember my father
looking for unexploded bombs.

Redknapp, all we knew was going out
every night when we got home from school

playing football, until
it was too dark to see,

and then find a bit of light somewhere,

carry on having a little game,

banks so then you can imagine
there were millions of young boys

playing football at that time,

and for you to be picked out
of a? those kids

to become a professional
footballer, fantastic,

Moore. Every kid as a young boy

probably all wanted to play
professional football,

all wanted to play in a cup final

and all if they could
wanted to captain eng/and,

but, as you know, I mishit it.

As Bobby Moore
goes up to get the worm cup,

to shake his hand.

I laughed when he went up the stairs,

,cause it was just so typically Bobby.

He had dirty hands and he,s rubbed them
against his shorts,

so he wouldn,t muddy or Sully
the queen,s gloves,

and wiped it on the velvet balustrade.

And I laughed.
Because that was so much Bobby.

Even in the heat of winning the World Cup:.

His thoughts were for somebody else.

The crowd were ecstatic.

A huge noise you cam describe.
Kt was unbelievable.

It was him holding it up,
but he held it up for all of US.

And now, we were running round that
field with the World Cup in our hand

and the fans were going absolutely berserk,

Bobby made sure that every one of US

had a little run with that work! Cup
in our hand

and we all got a round of applause.

And then he,d take it back
and then give it to somebody else.

Wonderful. Wonderful day.

I looked at him and there
was all these people standing up cheering

and I just thought "my god. What a man."

He survived cancer, which realty meant more

than all the football to me,
to be honest with you.

And here he is holding up
the Dukes Rimet cup.

I thought, "ll only they
really knew the truth,

?how much more would
he have been revered??

he was a proper hero.

Football exploded that night.

Yay!

There was a buzz. I mean,
there was just a buzz around the country.

Oh, over the world. Over the world.

Bobby became a star.

He had film star status
and he deserved fr.

There was something about him,
he just oozed class.

He was the king:
On and off the pitch,

always looked impeccable.

He became so famous.

People used to hold up babies
for him to touch.

Rock and roll music.
Fashion and football all combined.

Greg dyke, and the world has never been
quite the same since,

that night, the game changed.
It became totally glamorous,

he had really good taste. Bobby.

I never ever heard any stories
that he was a womaniser

I always felt very secure
and comfortable in my marriage.

Football, before pop and rock music
came along,

was the only way working-class people
could get out of their situation.

West Ham won
the World Cup in 1966,

Martin Peters. Geoff Hurst
and, of course, Sir Bobby Moore.

Everybody loves your daddy.

He dealt with his fame differently
as he got more comfortable with it.

We used to go to parties
with the Beatles, the stones the who

and everyone had a few drinks

and everyone got happy and god knows what,

then I started to realise that Bobby
had gone into another stratosphere: Really.

Robert Mitch um.
Sonny and Cher, Sammy Davis junior:

Omar sharif, Michael came.

You know. They were like.
Became like our mates.

used to babysit for US.

Powell". ,66 changed the image
of the footballer.

What do you do?

- I play football.

They did become
pan of the phenomenon,

which brought the working-class boy
through their glass ceiling.

We started to do modeling together.

I started to get more recognition,
it made you feel very special.

So I get round there and I see
that Tina,s not a bad-waking girl.

I said, "Bobby, do you mind
if she wears the England shirt?"

So he said, "yeah."
So we go out.

And this was the picture
and it caused such a hoo-ha.

I was treating the England shirt
with disrespect,

according to some people:
But I wasn,t, actually.

Tina. After the World Cup,
Dean was born.

It was absolutely the
most amazing occasion,

it fulfilled his dream
and, more than anything else:.

He,d fathered a son
after he,d had that horrible operation.

It,s very diff/cult, you know,
to live in the shadow of my father.

He cast a very long shadow:
Particularly for Dean.

Dean was a nice boy. You know,

but how do you {we up to your dad,

who,s the captain of the World Cup ,66?

You can? Replicate that, can you?

Being the son of a very famous father
can sometimes be difficult.

I think a lot of people
expect an awful lot of you.

Growing up with somebody very famous,

it does have tremendous positives:

But then it has its drawbacks
and it can be a dark place to be.

Because you have to be mindful
of people sometimes having other agendas.

Hurst, when we went out to Mexico in ,70,
we were arguably the team to beat,

we were strong favorites.

Banks, it really was a good side.

We felt we were unbeatable.

Bobby used to say
,70 was a better team than ,66

he thought that was a better,
more balanced team.

A more youthful team,

en route to the finals in Bogota
the interest was phenomenal,

Hurst" in Bogota,, the advice we were given
was don,t stray outside the hotel,

so, there were obviously some elements of
risk in that part of the world at that time.

I had a phone call
at 2:00 in the morning

and they said, "have you heard
what,s wrong, what,s happened to Bobby?"

And I went. "What do you mean?
Has there been an accident?"

When Bobby Moore was arrested
on a stopover in Colombia

and charged with stealing a gold bracelet,

Tell US how you feel, Bobby.

Nothing at all?

The captain of the World Cup
holders is detained and it was huge.

It is interesting that both
Moore-o and the other Bobby

were both arrested but the focus
seemed to be a lot more on Moore-o.

He had basically taken ll
upon himself to bear that burden,

banks we were ready to go to Mexico
and somebody come to me and said.

"Have you heard?
Bobbys got to stay back here.?

Powell". The media storm
then swirled around the world.

The official plane
had flown on to Mexico without him.

Alf felt confident to leave him

and get on with the job
of trying to retain the World Cup,

that tells you everything you need
to know about Alf,s belief in Bobby.

That he was man enough to take it.

there being a phone calk

he just said. "Are you all right?"
I went. "Bobby, don,t worry about how I am,

"how are you?"
And the phone,s gone dead.

And off she flew

unix, and I really didn,t know what to do.

May the 27th,
the foreign office ask the prime minister

"every minute,s delay
in securing Moore,s release

"militates against
England,s World Cup chances,

"request urgent action at highest level."

What happened to him was
definitely a political/oh and he knew it,

he had some terrible dark days over that.

Bob,s bomb proof,
and / think he,s the only man I know

that would have stood up
to days in a Colombian jaw.

Hunter it was all nonsense
to try and get US upset.

Bobby was released. Thank god.

It,s obviously been
a diff/cult last few days for you.

How do you feel
now you,re 20,000 feet over Colombia?

Well, I must insist
that this is the first time

I,ve really enjoyed flying

and I must say I,m delighted
to be heading back to Mexico

to meet up with the rest of the \ads.

Hurst" I don,t think he ever legally
actually finally cleared his name.

Redknapp, they picked on the wrong man,

because there,s no way Bobby would do
anything like that. Not a chance.

He comes out of house arrest:
Not training, no preparation,

he comes out and plays
within a few days against Brazil

and probably plays better against Brazil
than he did in the final in ,66.

He was magnificent that day,

waving their flags

and rising to Bobby Moore,

And I now see the ball

I thought, "wow."

Leant over and he said,

And he ended up with a bill
for 100,000.

Which in those days was a fortune.

And he paid it.

He got taken
to the cleaners there.

It was nasty.
A nasty business.

"But in the next few days,
five men, two of them armed,

Surrounded Bobby and escorted him off

he made a good joke
coming off the pitch,

"I didn,t have that
much of a bad game, did I??

when there was about
six coppers round him.

This is Greaves.

Still there. Greaves.

I think Jimmy had just signed with US.

Greaves, Bobby got me me into more trouble

than any other footballer
I,ve ever known.

And I,ve played with some villains.

Well, the incident in Blackpool

was, uh, I think the game looked like
it was gonna be off for sure.

We thought the game
was gonna be called off.

We were just sitting there
and Bob said,

?did we fancy going up
to see Brian London??

so to the nightclub, off we went,

don,t forget,
this is the night before a game.

That was Bobby Moore, Brian
dear, myself. Robbie Jenkins. The physio.

Yeah, we met Brian London
and he invited US

we were going for a walk, actually:.

And: Actually,
if I can remember rightly,

I think I possibly had forgotten
to bring his sleeping pill.

We came back quite early.
We weren,t the worse for wear

then we went to bed.

That is number four.

And that is the disconsolate figure
of Ruben Moore.

The papers had got hold of the story
that we,d gone to the nightclub.

And it was on the 1:00 news

Ron had been on the phone
questioning US

and we were summoned to the ground.

The directors really wanted
to Chuck US out that day. I think,

it was that bad.

But / think Ron lust saved our grace
and let US down gently.

Well, I suppose, Bobby.

You might think that we could have chosen
a better week to say, "this is your life "

it,s not exactly the happiest week
in West Ham,s history.

You can say that again, Eamonn.

But nevertheless,
it,s all part and parcel of the job

and, uh, we have to take
the rough with the smooth.

They were thinking of scrapping it:
But the damage was done.

Bobby Moore obe,
captain of England,s World Cup team:

Tonight, this is your life.

They went through,
did this ls your life,

which was live at the time.

That was on the Wednesday.

And on the Thursday,
they issued a statement.

They suspended Bobby,
Jimmy and Brian dear.

And Bobby thought the way
they handled it was disgraceful.

Um, I left at the end of the season.
Jimmy left. Bob stayed.

But it was never really
the same for Bob then.

So recently demoralized
by the events in Blackpool.

were interested in Bobby.

You had no choice but to stay.

the qualifying competition for 1974.

inside. As he,d done a million times,

Nigel Clarke" it was the first time I,d
seen him even come close to losing it,

he was pacing up and down:.

Quite red-faced and,
and agonising over it.

He was so upset
that he,d let England down.

And himself.

We went for a walk one day
and we met these fa councillors

and they had found Bobby
fast asleep on a park bench,

couldn,t sleep, got up, went our,
lay there like a tramp on a bench.

He was really, really beyond despair,
in a way.

If you,ve been wondering what this is
in my hand. It,s a nail,

and it,s either going in Poland,s coffin
or ifs going in Sir Alf,s.

Having seen Bobby Moore
make one mistake,

you could guarantee with your life

that he would never do
the same thing again.

It would be removed

that little tiny glitch in
the computer would have been deleted.

And by terrible irony, Norman hunter
replicated that mistake.

And then, I messed that up a bit
on the halfway line, you know.

Nobody makes mistakes on purpose,

and I made that howler

and then I couldn,t wait to try
and rectify that.

And the chances were unbelievable

and we should have beat them
three or four,

if the keeper hadn,t have been
so brill/ant, Tomaszewski.

Goalkeeper had a miracle game.

We should have scored about six goals.

He knocks it back and...

Bobby kept saying to Ali

He could still do it.

Had the best chance of the match,

and that was it England were out.

the blackest days they,ve ever had.

Sir ak Ramsey must be
a very disheartened man.

And I will never forget
that final whistle.

And I,ve got me head down
and I,m trudging off.

And I,m thinking, "well. That,s it,

And Bobby was there,

put his arm round me,
and he said something:

And I can,t really remember
what he said,

but uh, I was just so upset.

What about your own future
now as the England manager?

Well what about it?
I,m the England manager. Aren,t I?

Which wasn,t well-handled.

Bobby was given the chance
to get to the number of caps he did,

but the castle was falling:.

And, uh, from then on
it,s proved to be difficult

to rebuild a castle with sand.

England were knocked out of the World Cup,

Moore tonight captains England
for the 90th time

and thereby equals the record
or Bury Wright.

He got his 108 caps,
which was a record,

So he finished on a high.

But I think. In a way,

although he was upset
about the career coming to the end,

he was excited
because he was quite looking forward

to the next period of his life.

He went to the best places,

and he lived the life
of somebody that was

and deserved to
and was very successful.

But at the end of it, um.
You can have a good we.

But there,s not a lot of money

was a dream come true,
really, for him.

Anyway, we were on holiday
and he was excited,

because by then
he,d already had this conversation,

there were other directors on
the board, and Elton was very good at this,

he wanted the directors
to have their say,

and their view was that
it would be better if he went for me.

Now. Please,
I,m not doing this to boast.

Because I was only told that.
I,d no idea.

When I accepted the Watford job,
I,d no idea they,d spoken to Bobby Moore.

He used to go for a run every morning and
stop at the focal. Sort of, grocery shop.

He,s come in and he handed me
the paper. He was ashen,

they,d given Graham Taylor the job.

Well, I mean.
We were both gobsmacked,

that was the biggest letdown,
I think. Oi Bobby,s hie.

I mean.
He was absolutely shattered by that.

He was a very proud man
and it must have really hurt,

we just thought it was a matter of time
before another football offer would come tn

nothing came in.

And, you know, then when one did,
it was a really lowly job at Oxford city,

and actually it was very nice
of the man to even give it to him,

but it was a very dour,
grim sort of start.

Bobby had no money.
Harry Redknapp went to help him,

I went to Oxford city.
It was non-league.

We didn,t know the players.
It was an impossible job.

And then he started writing off for jobs:
Putting it out that he wanted a job.

Sometimes people didn,t even
return the letter.

Bobby wrote to the fa
after Don Revie left,

but I could well see him
not getting a reply, you know,?

You didn,t ever feel that
there was a conspiracy against you

just pushing you out of football,?

Well, I wouldn,t have thought so
and I wouldn�t have liked to think so.

Because, uh, you know.
If there had have been, uh.

I would like to have known the reasons why.

of the World Cup winning team

with a lot of knowledge
about football not offered a job?

It seems crazy,

as great a player
as he was and as much as he was loved,

I wouldn,t see them giving him a job,

Ron greenwood got the job.

Maybe he had more of a relationship,
especially with Geoff, you know.

Unix he was dejected.

I mean, it,s so awful
to be spurned by

something that
you,ve given so much to.

There,s no rhyme nor reason to it.

Only people in charge of football
and in charge of clubs

could tell you why they didn,t,

maybe they were soared about
the stories of his friends, if you like.

Sometimes you,re judged
by the company you keep.

And probably that,s what they thought.

There had been all the great upset
of the Bogot? incident.

Maybe that had an impact on the fact
that he was overlooked.

In the big box game
celebrity squares?,

Tina, it totally changed
our financial position.

And it must have been
a terrible, terrible burden on him

I haven,t played
football for 20 years

and I,m teaching Pel?, Ardlles,
Bobby Moore, how to play football.

Myself and Bob Moore, we work
with the stars who doesn,t play soccer.

They teach US how act.
We teach them how to play soccer.

Tonight it,s Bobby Moore.

Tina". He didn,t want to set! Morlands.

He was very proud of that house.

He,d worked terribly hard to get it,

I think Bobby was so proud:

He,d elevated himself and me
and the children to such a level,

he didn,t really...

I don,t think he was:
Felt he was capable

of dropping to a much lower \eve\.

Host. Bobby Moore.

His insomnia got worse.

I think he turned inwards.

I think he felt that he,d failed US as
a family and I think that, looking back,

I think there was depression.

In general terms, Bob:

What are you offering
at the Bobby Moore soccer school?

Well, basically, you know, we are
taking the boys on a week,s course.

It,s a non-residential course
that runs from a Monday to Friday

from 10:00 to 4000
every day.

And you meet your heroes
as well as getting coached. You see.

Well, that,s what we think,
but some of them can,t even remember US.

Tina, Bobby had died in all those years,
when he was neglected.

I think he was crushed.

What I want from you. Lads, right...

/ think it broke his heart actually.

He would never have admitted it.

But I know that
it really got to tum.

Tina, and I think that then
Bobby withdrew into himself

and I,m sure,

that,s when life got all too much

and I think after all the rejections:

He just got very despairing:

And I,m sure really
that was the cause

of what helped make him
look outside of our marriage.

He kept saying.
"Look we got a problem.?

I know he felt very guilty,

I don,t think he did if lightly,

(think he found it
a heartbreaking thing to do.

He kept ringing me
and coming round and seeing me,

he couldn,t make the break.

As much as I was hurt and devastated,
I think he was too,

and he was such a decent man
and such a good man,

I think that it really
impacted on him a great deal.

He did the right thing
as much as he could in that situation

and he ensured
we were all looked after.

And, you know as far
as Dean and I were concerned,

he was always there for US:
Always there for US.

Bobby, it,s been a difficult period
for all concerned,

I mean, not only for Tina and my children

but also for Stephanie and myself.

Stephanie, when I met Bobby,
I didn,t know anything about him at all,

because I didn,t come
from a footballing family.

I just found mm to be
a very gentle, very understated,

very correct, very dignified.

He was just a very nice guy.

Undoubtedly, making the decision
to leave his family

was an exceptionally hard decision
for him to make.

And I would only know the half of it:.

Um. Because, once again:

He would try and protect everybody
from the inevitable.

Everybody was gonna be hurt
in that situation at some point

and he really wrestled with that,
with his conscience.

He was a very romantic man,

one of my favourite songs
at the time,

and stiff is, is Autumn leaves.

And one day
we were sitting at an airport

and he,d gone off
to the loo or whatever,

and I was sitting facing the wall:
Finishing my coffee,

and then I became aware
in this crowded lounge,

you know, where we were eating:

Bobby was standing behind me
singing Autumn leaves to me.

Uh, you know, he was a great romantic.

The first time I ever saw Stephanie
was when he was a manager here

and he brought her to Southend,

Stephanie, because he,d given up
everything, even his car,

things were difficult financially
for some years.

But Southend is a great club.
You know. The fans are fabulous.

Real sense of community in Southend.

He went there as a director

and they were not in great shape
financially or football-wise,

and matters only got worse. And then
one day they sacked the manager

and said to Bobby,
"well, you can take over."

Southend did the right thing
in trying to take him on,

but I don,t think
it was big enough for him.

He was given the job:
Because they were facing relegation.

They weren,t
going to avoid relegation.

So he was given
an impossible job, really.

Um..

You just had to laugh
and get on with it.

Bobby one of the things
that I realised I had missed,

when I first got back
involved in the coaching capacity,

was the camaraderie that you get
in dressing rooms and in training sessions,

where you,re getting
like 15, 16 players, you know,

chipping at one another, bantering
with one another, fishing jokes.

We had a great couple of years there.
All said and done.

I don,t know if he had the attributes
to be a manager,

to be honest:
I don,t think he was hard enough.

Who knows? He could have been
the best West Ham manager of all time.

No one knows,
given the chance to do the job.

He could have been the England manager.
He knew the game inside out.

Why couldn,t he have been
a great manager? I don,t...

He just needed a chance
at a good club with good players

to show what he could do.
And he never got that opportunity.

At the end, it was difficult.

He was ready to leave and ready
to move back to London, as was I

the first time I met
Bobby Moore was when I was at capital gold

and we needed someone to be
a really heavyweight co-Commentator:

and he was working
for the Sunday sport at the time

I didn,t think it was possible
and then, io and behold,

a couple of days later,
Bobby walked into the office and...

Pristine, immaculate.
Which he always was:.

And a big smile on his face,
you know, and he said, ?all right, jp??

and that was it, really,
and we were set from then on.

He was just like, you know,
Bobby Moore, 1966 World Cup winning...

The absolute hero, icon, god for me,
and lust a normal bloke,

Bobby would insist on driving.

Stephanie told me
ifs because Bobby thought

I did a? the work at the ground

and therefore he would do ah the work
tn getting there and getting back.

Bob would cut up everyone
and there,d be people

banging their horns and thumping
their windows, everything like that.

And then they,d see it was Bobby
and go, you know,

?Bobby Moore.
Bobby Moore,s just out US up.?

everyone waving for Bobby.

You,d stop at a traffic jam
a bit further up.

The car that you,d just cut up:
They,d want his autograph.

He shouldn,t have been
doing local radio.

He should have been sitting up
in the stand at Wembley

and he should have been sitting in the
front row at West Ham

he should have been an ambassador.

He was sad about that.
But he was never bitter about it.

I remember seeing him at Grimsby,

sat up here doing commentary
during a really cold, bleak day.

And I hear somebody, "Harry!?
I look up and there,s Moore-o,

he,s looking at the pitch before the game
and he,s sitting up there.

He,s got a great bag cap on,
eating fish and chips,

and I rooked at mm
and I thought,

"he shouldn,t be here.
He shouldn,t be doing radio:.

"Getting 100 quid or whatever
he,s getting for a night,s work."

I felt embarrassed working
at West Ham and he,s not.

"Maybe I should be up there doing the radio
and he should be down here."

It wasn,t very glamorous,
a whole lot of it,

but, yeah, he loved the involvement
and he loved the crack.

Then, Stephanie said to me that,
you know, it made him feel pan of a team

and close to football again,
which I think was really important for Bob.

Wherever we went in World Cup ,90:
Bobby was revered.

Pearce". We,d come to the semi-final,
with England playing Germany up in turin.

We,ve always called it
the tears of turin.

Now if anyone wants to see
a great game of football,

that was a wonderful
game of football.

One of the last great World Cup games
I think I,ve ever seen

it was brutally passionate,
it was exotically skilful

and England went out so cruelly.

And at the end. I turned:
In the commentary:

And I was like welling up
in the commentary,

,cause m,s my first World Cup

and it,s the closest I,ve ever seen
to England winning the World Cup:.

But I turn to my right-hand side
and Bobby was in floods.

,Cause in 1990,
that,s what it still meant to him.

That,s what England still meant to him.

That,s what England in a World Cup
still meant to him.

And I think that was one of the defining
moments of my relationship with him.

So, we plodded away through
these jubilant German supporters

and we get to this square in turin:

And it,s like something
from Dante-b inferno,

you know. There,s all these hooligans

piling into one another
and smashing each other up.

These were bad days.

Wed gotta get across this square because
we could see our hotel in the distance

so I said to Bob, "listen, let,s find a
bar. I,m not gonna go across there.?

and he went, "no, no. Pearce-o:
We,ll be all right."?

So Bobby starts walking: Don quixote:
Across this square,

and I,m his Sancho panza, you know:
I,m hid behind him.

But I didn,t need to.

As soon as Bobby hit the square,

all these people punching heck
out of one another, bang, bang, bang:.

"Oh, it,s Bobby Moore.
All right, Moore-o."

?All right, son,? What,d you think
of the game? Bad penalty, wasn,t it?"

"Oh, it was a shocking penalty.
It,s Bobby Moore. It,s Bobby Moore."

Ah! Bang, bang. Bang.
Carried on the fight.

So, we,re walking across,
it was like the parting of the red sea:

Bobby and me and these hooligans
having a go at each other

and no one touched US.
No one touched US

it was brilliant: Like being
in the presence of a divine being.

West Germany
are through to the final.

The only person Gascoigne
would talk to after being booked

was Bobby Moore.

Well, who do you turn to. You know?

Because sometimes
you wanna know the experience:

What it would be like
winning the World Cup:.

And obviously with him doing it.

Gascoigne had run after him and said:
"Bobby, Bobby, can I have a word??

I wasn,t privy to it, but apparently
dad said to him, you know,

?you okay??

and he opened up to him.

Gascoigne, we had a little chat for a while
and then I got to sit next to him.

He sat next to US
on the plane and that.

We chatted at! The way back.

That time that I were with him
was really nice, you know.

So I was one of the fortunate ones
that actually got to meet the guy,

people like Gascoigne,
they knew that Bobby had lived it.

He,d lived it,
he,d experienced it, he,d coped.

Because it was a lot to cope with.

When he developed bowel cancer

and he was told
that it wasn,t curable,

he was very stoic.

I went to see dad in hospital

he was, um, lying in the bed
and he was just coming round from the op,

and he looked at me
and he was literally just coming to:.

And Stephanie was there:

And he said,
"I think they,ve got it all."

And I saw Stephanie,s eyes well up
and then I just knew.

He was very motivated

to hem anybody understand
what cancer was about

my impression was
that he was a very private man.

We decided that we wouldn,t
make it public.

So nobody was really in:

Bar his immediate family.
My immediate family.

I think Bobby,s greatest
coping strategy is called Stephanie.

Uh, she was absolutely wonderful
in her support,

not in a stupid, feather-bedded way:
Very practical,

but obviously
so concerned for his health.

His calmness enabled me,
when I was in his presence:

To be exceptionally calm
and controlled.

But, there were months
and months and months

where I was going to work
and rust in a terrible state,

because I knew I didn,t have him
for very long now.

Prof John Smyth, he displayed
what is catted fighting spirit

in a way that was very realistic.

Stephanie, he didn,t ask
how much longer he had,

but he made sure
he lived every day to the full.

Places he wanted to go to,

people he wanted to see.

One of the things
I remember about that period

was a phone call he made to me
and ream; Asking me nothing.

I knew he just wanted to talk to me.

And I felt,
my wife felt very strongly:

That he knew exactly
what was gonna happen

"I think he,s calling to say goodbye."

I was on a train.
It was rush hour

and all of a sudden someone,s come in

and must have sat down and
they,ve nudged me and went, "madam?

And I looked and it was Bobby
and I didn,t recognise him.

And I went. "Oh, Bobby."

But he looked so different.

The golden, beautiful Bobby
that / remembered wasn,t there.

Obviously, he wasn,t we?.

Then he got up
and he went to get off the train:.

And just as the doors
were about to close, he got back on,

and then he stayed with me and
we chatted until I got off at my station.

And then I walked away
with a lump in my throat.

I didn,t see him again.

He announced that he was ill

and then there was a match
against San marine at Wembley.

Gascoigne takes it

and it,s nice to see Bobby Moore up
in the press box working for radio,

the best wishes of ms many friends
in football are with him tonight,

England won convincingly.

And he turned round to me at the end

and he just kind of went like that.
He,d done it.

I think he wanted to say goodbye
to Wembley stadium.

He kind of took stock
and had done what he wanted to do,

had said goodbye
in his own quiet way.

He wanted to come
to the royal garden hotel:

So it was a significant place.

We came and we had lunch
and then we came and stood outside

it was not a cold day, but chilly.

He had this long, red leather coat:

Which had been a gift
from Malcolm Allison,

which he was wearing
against the weather:.

,Cause he was feeling
the weather a bit at that point.

And then we both realised
that this was gonna be the end

and we just sod of embraced and, uh...

Looked at each other.

A little bit later on that week:
Stephanie phoned me up,

and we were due to go to West Ham,
and Steph phoned me up.

And she said she didn,t really
want him to go to West Ham,

because she thought it would be a media
circus, and I totally agreed with her.

There,d be cameras everywhere.

So she said, "he won,t take it from me.
Will you tell him?"

So: I phoned up Bob and I said:.

"Bobby I don,t think
you should go to West Ham,

"it,s gonna be quite cruel.
There,s gonna be cameras?

I didn,t know how long Bobby had.

?Cameras there all over you, you know,
and I don,t think it,d be best."

And he said to me. "Pearce-o,
I,ll always respect your opinion...

"I,ll always..."

"I,ll always respect your opinion:
But I don,t agree with you,

?and we,ll talk on Monday?

There was no way
Bobby could have gone to that game.

The press would have been all over him
it would have been horrendous

and Bobby was not well.
It was the Saturday before he died.

Sadly

the last words
he ever said to me were,

"I respect what you say,
but I don,t agree with you."

And I carry that,

the doctor came at one point
and said, ?we,ll move him into hospital."

And I went downstairs
and I said to Dean,

"they want to take your father
into hospital. I don,t want this."

I said: "There,s no way
they,re moving him out of this house."?

And Dean said, "I,ll deal with it."

And he went and spoke to the doctor.

And I don,t know what they discussed,
but Bobby stayed at home,

I went straight round to has house

and, you know,
he was only lucid for moments then

and was kind of
in and out of consciousness

and he woke up and he saw me
and he kind of touched me on the nose

and just went, ?hello, Dolly drops."

And that,s one of the last things
he ever said to me.

And, um, I,ll never forget that night.

I mean, I was with him all night,
as we all were.

And, you know,
it was the saddest night of my life.

The outpouring of love was very
comforting for those of US left behind.

He was very beloved,
he,d given an awful lot to West Ham,

he was one of their own.

They,d lost a son. Hadn,t they?

There was a huge
outpouring of public emotion.

A minute,s silence at grounds.

You could see what the man meant.

We didn,t, as the fa.

We probably didn,t treat Bobby Moore
as he should have been treated.

I don,t think Bob had a great deal of time:
Really, for the fa mandarins,

and, uh, clearly the way
they famed to use him

would suggest they had no,
you know, no great time for him:.

Which is incredibly sad.

He should have been used by the fa,
he should have been used by West Ham.

Suddenly, they wanna
name a stand after him.

When he was alive.
They didn,t wanna know mm.

And at that stage, I think West Ham
united did themselves a disservice

and I certainly think
the fa did as well.

Um, it was too kite

um, Bobby had gone.

No disrespect to other footballers
who,ve got knighthoods.

Good luck to ,em

no one deserved a knighthood more
than Bobby amongst the footballers.

You know, he should have had
a knighthood for sure.

Naturally, looking at the people

who,ve been knighted in this country
of footballing figures,

without question
you would put Bobby up there:

As somebody
that should have been knighted.

In fact, people: Even today:.

Still refer to him in conversation
as ?Sir Bobby Moore.?

but I suppose some people
are knighted by monarchs

and other people
are knighted by the people:.

And I know which one has more value.

Since he died,
Stephanie has worked tirelessly

for her bowel cancer shanty,

and actually, in some ways, she has
rebuilt Bobby Moore,s name, I think.

Dyke, by putting his statue
outside Wembley

and saying.
"Here is the iconic player of his age."

I do think we,ve made up for that.

I think we,ve said, "he matters."

But I think it was belated.

He should have
been an ambassador

LAMPARD". The fa needs to have that.

It needs to have a link to players
that have been there and done it.

Powell they,ve done it
in Argentina with Maradona.

In Brazil with Pel?.

And it,s like
Beckenbauer with Germany.

Powell for some reason.
This nation of ours gets very embarrassed

by anybody who becomes a hero.

Pearce". He could have been a great
spearhead for our footballing oaf son,

would we have been in a better mace
seeking another worm cup in England

with someone like Bobby Moore
as a figurehead?

Yeah, I think we would have been

England supporters waving
then flags and rising to Bobby Moore,

the England captain.

It would have been
a significant contribution

and it could have dealt
with some of the problems

and the decline
subsequent to has era as a player,

commentator" what a superb bloke
to have in your side.

I saw the greatest defender
who ever stepped on a football field.

Hurst" his ability to read the game
at the back, his composure,

- good tackle by Moore.
- Yeah. Well hang on a minute.

We all can,t do that,
otherwise it,d be an easy game,

as a player and a man, I loved him.

Pearce he wasn,t just a footballer.
He wasn,t just ,66.

He was a man of great spirit
and bravery and dignity,

and I think his legacy goes on
because of that.

He,s a great ambassador for life:
Not just football but for life.

You never heard anybody
say a bad word about Bobby.

There was no one ever
I could think of

who came in contact with him
and wouldn,t have liked him.

You couldn,t dislike him

football was Bobby,s life.

Hunter" he was born to play
for England. Weren,t he?

Bobby Moore is one of the figures
that will be in the fine! Pantheon

of Pel?. Maradona, George best,
Johan Cruijff. Bobby Moore,

like these players that are above.

It,s because you,ve connected
to something in people

that goes beyond sport.

It,s almost as though
he,s presiding over the game

at the stadium that he most loved.

Hodgson: That great victory
has weighed on teams ever since

and that,s no fault at all
of the people who achieved it,

it just shows up the fact
that they did something,

which none of US
have been able to achieve

tn the 50 years
that have succeeded that

but you can never lose sight
of the fact that they did win it:.

And you have to go back to basics
sometimes and remember that,

be proud of that
and try and replicate it.

And why not?
I think we should talk about it a lot.

I think we should show the video

and try and inspire another group
to go and do something the same.

He said to me,
?you,ve no idea what it,s like

I think 50 years
for this country is too long.

We wanna change it, we wanna try
and create our own history,

so people talk about US
in 50 years time

the way they speak about Bobby Moore.

They give all the generations after
something to believe in

and something to took up to.

Hurst" younger players look up to him
and feel he,s an inspiration to them.

,Cause you couldn,t possibly pick
a better role model.

Pearce". Come the end of the day,

there is a 7-year-old boy
kicking a rumba?,

who one day wants
to lead his country,

and you will never ever beat the
passion o? Kids who want to do that.

And Bobby would have loved that.

That realty was a powerful header
away by Bobby Moore

and the referee
ls completely knocked out,

and a lot of people ask me:
Even today, who,s my hero?

And I say, ?Bobby Moore?

Bobby would come round the house,
and then as I became of an age

to be aware of the fact that,
what he,d done in the game,

you know, England captain
who lifted the World Cup,

then I was obviously quite excited
that he was flicking the ball

around in the garden with me.

I don,t think I,d have had the mental
strength and the physical strength

to have come back
from testicular cancer,

and for Bobby Moore 18 months after
a diagnosis of testicular cancer,

to lift the World Cup and then
to go on and further has career.

That,s a remarkable achievement.

Bernard against Bobby Moore.

It must 100-1 against.

And he saved it!

He had a wicked sense of humour

he,d never leave my consulting room
without me having had a laugh.

And staff outside, you know:
Who weren,t listening in,

but they,d say, "goodness.
You,ve been laughing in there."

He played centre forward one night
at Shrewsbury, in a friendly game,

and he was fantastic.
I think he got two or three.

He might have got a hat-trick that night.

But he could play anywhere, Moore-o.

He was that type of footballer:
You know?

An intelligent one
to Bobby Moore,

got a ricochet of somebody.

My team. I really supported,
when I was younger. Was West Ham,

I tried to go there when I was 17,
even though I played for newcastle.

Must wanted to go to West Ham

and I think that Sir Bobby
was one of the reasons.

I was walking out the ground one day,
a car pulled up beside me and it was Bobby.

And he said, ?where are you going?"
Sol said, "I,m going to Bow.?

he said, "well, I,m going up the station.
Jump in. I,ll give you a lift."

He dropped me off at Bow Church

and I was just hoping
that there,d be someone

walking along the road that knew me

that would see me
getting out of Bobby Moore,s car.

Commentator: they,ve gotta
go for Moore soon

a shot. Goal! By Moore!

We were banned for four years.

We got banned in 1965 for,
I don,t know what we did.

We were banned from working there, so...

And that was a big shoe out of our career

because, you know.
It was the biggest market in the world:.

So we had to come back here,
so I wrote songs about England.

And Sunny Afternoon was about England.

And England won the World Cup.

It,s all so poetic.
